Trying to find the best real world religion to properly compare to Scientism for a fic (I think calvinism is the best fit so far), so I went looking through the basic ideals of the most prominent protestant religions in the US post 1850 and I wanted to know what the basic ideals of southern baptist were since that's what I was raised (but haven't practiced since I was like 7 since im a big queer) since that's 90% of where I grew up since we have that 11th largest megachurch in the united states and uhhhhh

for some reason i havent seen a single person talking about this so far but
California is suffering from extensive power outages right now.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is an estimated 14.7 million people without power
This is an outage map of nothern (Sacramento, San Francisco) and central (San Luis Obispo, Bakersfield) california.
Southern california (Los Angeles, San Diego) seems largely unaffected for now. This may change in the coming days.
This could mean days without power for many people, on top of severe flooding and wind speeds. The current expectations are wind speeds of ~60 mph, waves of 25 feet, landslides, and there's the potential for a coastal tornado.
This number may continue to grow.
Not to be all 'have us in your thoughts and prayers'-y, but the impact this storm could be catastrophic. This is going to devastate local communities. it's already flooding freeways and rivers, and some are being asked to evacuate.
* Direct Relief CA provides support to emergency services [x]
* GFM has a category for those affected by California's storms. In the coming days, this will likely be more active [x]
* NBC San Diego provides grants and emergency preparation for those affected by flooding [x] and you can donate to support victims here [x]
more resources TBA

I went back to the year 2021 and listened to another episode of That Thing I Do: On the Road.
Darren: We had a little desert weekend with friends that we had accounted for a long time, that we posponed til everybody was vaccinated which everybody is now. So I and my close group of pals from college had a nice little desert weekend getaway.
Tumblr media
And I'm on the way back and I'm like 'let's stop and get ourselves a nice little relaxed spa day. So we stopped in this place and so I'm sitting in their little restaurant somewhere in the Palm dessert area outside of Los Angeles.
That whole eco system of desert life is something that I didn't get into until later in life. I remember when Mia and I started dating and her mother had a place out in the desert. We went out to see her family. And I famously and much to my embarrassment – they won't let me, I don't let me let this down. You know I come from Nothern California. I like mountains. I like trees. I like beaches. Vibrancy like life. So I'm sitting there and never hung out in the dessert. And they're like 'Darren, what do you think of the dessert?' And I went 'I don't like to go where the earth goes to die.' What an asshole thing to say. I didn't mean it in a shitty way. I just meant like I prefer the side of greenary, mountains and stuff. It was an idiotic, ignorant thing to say that I'd since apologized for many times. I'd really grow to love the desert. The sort of a calm, like the emptiness and the vastness that I didn't appreciate until the past few years. I love it out here. We had a nice little weekend.
(Jamie posted this pic. I guess this is the trip Darren is talking about. jlbeatty: Palm Springs is a magical place where love is celebrated 24/7, everyone’s a model, and friends, delicious food, and dog weddings appear out of thin air… ✨🌵🔮🌴 Thanks for a wonderful weekend @casaverde.ps We’re all married now! #palmsprings #everyone #is #a #model #everyone #is #married)

Let's Look At Where We Would Be In Panem
I'm doing all 50 states, so let's fucking go. (I'm not doing exact, so if it's only partially in the wilds, I'm not stating that)
Alabama - 11 (Agriculture) Alaska - None Arizona - 5 (Power) Arkansas - Southern = 11 (Agriculture), Northern = 8 (Textiles) California - 4 (Fishing) Colorado - 2 (Masonry) Connecticut - Wilds Delaware - Wilds Florida - Wilds Georgia - Wilds Hawaii - None Idaho - Southern = 1 (Luxury), Middle = 4 (Fishing), Northern = 7 (Lumber) Illinois - Southern = 8 (Textiles), Northern = 3 (Technology) Indiana - Southern = 12 (Coal), Norhtern = 3 (Technology) Iowa - 3 (Technology) Kansas - 8 (Textiles) Kentucky - 12 (Coal) Louisiana - Wilds Maine - Wilds Maryland - Wilds Massachusetts - Wilds Michigan - Southern = 3 (Technology), Northwestern = 6 (Transportation), Northeastern = 13 (Nuclear) Minnesota - Western = 9 (Grain), Eastern = 3 (Technology) Mississippi - 11 (Agriculture) Missouri - 8 (Textiles) Montana - Southern = 1 (Luxury), Northern = 7 (Lumber) Nebraska - 9 (Grain) Nevada - 4 (Fishing) New Hampshire - Wilds New Jersey - Wilds New Mexico - 2 (Masonry) New York - 13 (Nuclear) North Carolina - Wilds North Dakota - 9 (Grain) Ohio - 12 (Coal) Oklahoma - 11 (Agriculture) Oregon - 4 (Fishing) Pennsylvania - Wilds Rhode Island - Wilds South Carolina - Wilds South Dakota - 9 (Agriculture) Tennessee - 8 (Textiles) Texas - Western = 10 (Livestock), Eastern = 11 (Agriculture) Utah - Southern = 5 (Power), Northern = 1 (Luxury) Vermont - Wilds Virginia - Wilds Washington - 7 (Lumber) West Virginia - 12 (Coal) Wisconsin - Western = 3 (Technology), Eastern = 6 (Transportation) Wyoming - Southern = Capital, Nothern = 1 (Luxury)
This isn't perfectly exact, but I tried my best.
(Btw, I'd be in District 11. Lemme know where y'all would be.)

So, someone sent me this meme and I decided to do the math for it to see if it is accurate because why not.
Sadly this sphere would be nowhere near as big as the image would lead you to believe. After calculating the size of a sphere using 2% of the US defense budget, and also only calculating the cost for the raw material of the obsidian, so not including labor costs, processing costs, or any permits or anything, it would only be about 0.12 miles tall, or about 2 football fields tall.
More sad news: even if the sphere were to be hollow and 1/16 of an inch thick, it would be about 90420 feet tall, or about 17 miles tall, but only be visible for about 350 miles in any direction. The distance from SF to the northern border of California is about 500 miles, meaning it would still not be visible from all of northern California. It would need to be nearly double as tall at 183000 feet, or almost 35 miles tall, and only be a measly 0.0156 inches thick, or about 396 microns thick, or about 1/3 as thick as a GRAIN of SAND, to be visible from all of nothern California.
Also, it would cost approximately double the US annual defense budget if you wanted to construct a solid version. So yeah, this meme is not accurate lmao.

Lincoln City, CA
Lincoln City started as a small township. Thanks to Powers, its population boomed during the Third Industrial Revolution and caused a mass expansion. Today, Lincoln City is a bustling metropolis, home to some of the most iconic landmarks in Nothern California. Visitors from all over the world come to marvel at its stunning architecture and vibrant culture. The city boasts some of the best shopping malls on the West Coast. From luxury brands to local boutiques, shoppers can find something for everyone while they explore Lincoln City’s unique stores.
But beyond its popular attractions, what draws so many people to this city is its vibrant cultural scene. The heart of Lincoln City lies in its communities, which come alive with a wide variety of activities throughout the year. Every month, locals and visitors alike can experience events like art exhibitions and cultural performances that celebrate diversity and inclusion. The city’s multicultural heritage is evident in its many festivals and celebrations, which feature traditional music from around the world. Ironically, this love of diversity and inclusion does not encompass the Powers, despite the city owing its success to their back-breaking groundwork.
The city also has an impressive culinary landscape, with restaurants serving up dishes from a variety of cultures. From upscale eateries to hole-in-the-wall joints, there’s something for everyone to enjoy when it comes to dining in Lincoln City. Whether you want to try classic Mexican dishes or experiment with fresh seafood, you won’t be disappointed in this vibrant metropolis.
Lincoln City's nightlife is equally exciting – dance clubs, bars, pubs, live music venues, and more are all part of the city's electrifying atmosphere after dark.
Located on the coast, Lincoln City has a maritime climate featuring warm and dry summers and cool, wet winters. In the mornings it tends to be foggy, particularly in the summer months. The greater metropolitan area further inland experiences snowfall mostly from January to February, yet it's possible to see some snow as early as December.
