Top Fiction Reads of 2024 (because I actually read enough this year to justify it)
Nona the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir: Really can't understate how good this book is and how rereadable the entire series is because of how it is structured and written. I'm avoiding spoilers and whatnot lol. Anyway it's my favorite of the series and made me cry.
Dungeon Meshi manga by Ryoko Kui: Absolutely fantastic story that also isn't that long of a read. I highly, highly recommend it. I haven't enjoyed an anime/manga series this much since Fullmetal Alchemist and Fruits Basket. And yes, it is definitely more expansive than the anime.
This Is How You Lose the Time War by Amal El-Mohtar and Max Gladstone and Piranesi by Susanna Clarke rank about the same for me and those who have read both can probably guess why lol. Delightfully twisty and something I'll probably reread again/get physical copies of when I can. Unfortunately, reading them contractually obligates me to avoid mentioning spoilers.
4. Long Live Evil by Sarah Rees Brennan as well as The Sunshine Court by Nora Sakavic: I NEED THE SEQUELS NOW. *ahem* 5. A Marvellous Light by Freya Marske: Admittedly there is probably recency bias here since I just finished it but it made me laugh a lot and was very enjoyable so whatever. It deserves a spot. 6. The Great Hunt by Robert Jordan: Purely because the last chunk of the book goes hard and it's an incredible bit of plotting. I'm finally finished with it after taking forever with the first third of the book and now understand why everyone was so eager for me to get to Book 3.
Honorable mentions that were good and/or really good re-reads:
Beauty by Robin McKinley
Spy Family Vol. 1 by Tatsuya Endo
The Invasion by K.A. Applegate
Avi Cantor Has Six Months to Live by Sacha Lamb
She Who Became the Sun by Shelley Parker-Chan (will probably read the sequel at some point)
Legends & Lattes by Travis Baldree
Honorable mentions that were a good way to pass time but probably won't be reread:
The Watchmaker's Daughter by C.J. Archer (won't re-read but will continue the series to see if they ever kiss, dammit. reminds me a bit of reading the Mercy Thompson books)
Akata Witch by Nnedi Okorafor (read this to recommend it to my niece; I liked the audiobook)
Thrawn by Timothy Zahn
Murder on the Orient Express by Agatha Christie
Keeper of the Lost Cities by Shannon Messenger (recommend this to any child you're trying to convince to read something that isn't Harry Potter)
Gwen & Art Are Not In Love by Lex Croucher
A Lady for a Duke by Alexis Hall
The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo by Taylor Jenkins Reid
The Infinite Noise by Lauren Shippen
Squeak by Vera Valentine (trust me on this one. it's very weird and very funny)

Ace Attorney News Roundup
Very behind on several of these, but news doesn't always cross over from twitter to tumblr, so I thought I'd recap some things here:
AAI 15th Anniversary
First: today marks the 15th anniversary of Ace Attorney Investigations! Tatsuro Iwamoto, the art director for AAI, made a celebratory sketch of Kay to commemorate the occasion (link to tweet):
Tumblr media
Iwamoto has also been drawing fanart of minor characters throughout the ace attorney trilogy on his twitter page. These include: April May, Dee Vasquez, Yanni Yogi (and Polly), Richard Wellington, Turner Grey, Moe the Clown, Max Galactica, Oldbag (alien mode), Matt Engarde, Doug Swallow, Luke Atmey (and Mask☆DeMasque), Viola Cadaverini, Valerie Hawthorne, Lisa Basil, and Glen Elg. Technically these aren't official art, but it's always good to have more art of obscurer characters!
The Great Ace Attorney Hit A Million Copies
Some big news: The Great Ace Attorney's 2021 port hit a million copies sold, making it the second ace attorney game to hit Capcom's platinum titles list, the first being the Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney Trilogy from 2019! This comes just under 3 years since the release of the duology in July 2021. In comparison, the original AA trilogy hit a million copies in December 2020, shortly under two years since the release of the game in February 2019.
The update to the platinum titles sales shows that Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy has reached 3.3 million copies sold, which means that it has sold over a million copies in less than a year! (My last post that had information on sales, where I said the trilogy had sold 2.3 million, was in September 2023.) It also makes it the 30th highest selling title for Capcom, which I think is pretty impressive considering giants like Resident Evil, Monster Hunter, and Street Fighter are making up the majority of the top 30.
So, the AA trilogy made its first million in approximately 22 months, but now it has sold a million over the last 8 months. I don't know anything about game sales and so this next part is just speculation, but I wouldn't expect it to be very common for games to sell more years out from their release compared to at release? I think that's really saying something about the long-term staying power of this series, and its increasing popularity over the last few years despite not having any new releases (aside from ports - and porting the series to all platforms probably has something to do with the popularity.)
The AA Twitter Is Very Active Right Now
Here are a couple of bullet points with no relation to each other:
-The official ace attorney twitter has been VERY active, particularly the last week. They've been doing the same "weekly book club" for each case that they did for the Great Ace Attorney duology, but that wrapped up last week and now it's just been memes, at least one a day. In most of my time following this account over the last uhh six years, they mostly ramp up marketing around new releases but are kinda silent the rest of the time, with the occasional meme, but definitely not at this frequency.
-Summer Game Fest is next week.
That probably means nothing, as it has every other time I thought we might get some big ace attorney news, but I think it's worth noting.
So, lots of stuff happened this week! Thanks for reading.

A Digital Fangirl's Journey into the Analog World
It started with a search, three words typed into the eBay search bar. Due South zine.
Tumblr media
I began my fandom journey online when high-speed internet was slowly rolling out in the United States. I've never known a time in fandom when a million search results weren't at the tips of my fingers, and yet I've been nostalgic for a more physical relationship with fandom. Thankfully, the @ds30below fest announcement had a week devoted to history. The perfect excuse to dive into zines for the first time.
Due Frisky #2 is a digest-sized, soft-cover zine held together with staples. This baby fits perfectly in your hand for reading anywhere. The photo doesn't do it justice, but the cover is a pretty pinky-red color.
Inside, there is a table of contents, an editor's note, the stories, and, at the back, a short advertisement for more zines from the same press. Included at the end of each full-length story is a black-and-white photograph from the show that is connected to the story's content. This is an F/V zine from January of 1997, although nowhere do they address or even mention Ray K. Perhaps issue one dealt with that?
As for the content itself, there are four stories and one poetry cycle. I'd especially like to highlight the first story, "Perfection" by Khylara, which deals with Ray V's Catholicism in such a beautiful way that I was practically jumping with joy as I read. Unfortunately, my searches have not turned up this fic anywhere online to share! It's such a shame, too; it's so thoughtful.
Speaking of which, although I can find some of the authors online, I haven't found any of the particular fics from the zine available. Mireille, who people may know from their other F/V works, has the first part of a multiple-part series in this zine. Now, the editors warn you of this in the editor's notes, but I had forgotten by the time I got to this story, and frankly, I am climbing the walls wondering what happens next!
I found reading this zine extremely satisfying. It was wonderful to have some fanfic to curl up with during a spring storm while being beholden to a supercomputer in my hand.
I also loved reading stories that were contemporary to the show's actual airing. I found the language to be just ever slightly more formal than fanfic nowadays, but in a way that was not distracting or detracting.
Another thing, as the title might imply, all of the stories feature sex and sexuality as a topic. Obviously, given my track record, that doesn't bother me. But I could see where that would turn some off from reading. There's drama, fluff, and plenty of other emotions throughout the pieces, but at the end of the day, they will be having sex.
Overall, this was a fantastic zine for a beginner. Every piece was wonderful, and I anticipate reading it again many times.

Go to hell anon cause I care!
Also I really want to get into Huntress and all her story but the whole comic universe in DC feels very intimidating to me. I've read a couple shorter stories of other characters but was wondering where I should start with her.
Background context on what I know or don't know about her: I don't know anything about her backstory except for vague connections w the batfam and Bruce. The only media I've consumed of her is from Justice League Unlimited (the animation series)
Now that that's out of the way. Where do you think I should start with her comics?
Hello Inkreads!
I was attempting to put together a complete reading guide for you and everyone else, seeing as there are no complete guides for Helena Bertinelli online right now, and the most comprehensive one still has things out of order, messes things up, and doesn't have the Rebirth stuff. This ask inspired me to take that information and try to put the info from the two most complete reading guides together and create something better.
It is taking me longer than I would like, and I didn't want to leave you hanging when it came to getting information on how to read Helena's comics. So I am going to give you a quick run down of some important storylines and comics you should read for the character, and I will also include the links to the incomplete reading lists if that is something more preferable to you, and other ways you can find information on her.
This list and the website I was and am using for my readthrough were given to me by my friend @gretaghostgirl. (Sorry for tagging wanted to given you credit)
Tumblr media
So quick note on the picture. You are going to want to read Blunt Trauma before you read No Man's Land.
This is just a list of her main appearances and not her guest staring, and cameos so you might miss some stuff, but this will give you the run down on her story before New 52.
I don't have a list for you on New 52 stuff, or Rebirth, but I can show you the way I keep track of those eras of comics.
League Of Comic Geeks is where I track my comic collection and the comics I have read. It is both an app and website. It will keep track of not just DC but Marvel and other comic companies.
I will be using the app version to show how it can be done. I have purple arrows pointing to things, because purple was the color it was on, but also Huntress themed.
So in the app you have a homepage that looks like this [Here is mine]
Tumblr media
Once you click on the search bar your going end up on a page that has this and some more info [I cut down some of the pictures to save space.]
Tumblr media
Type in Huntress
Tumblr media
Now that you have a search you can look at series, specific issues, and characters. For what we want to do click characters.
Tumblr media
Now you are going to have a page with all characters that have used the name Huntress. The Huntress we want for the reading list I gave you is Prime Earth. [But the Helena from Justice Lesgue Unlimited is Earth-12 (DCAU) If that also interests you.] So click Prime Earth Huntress.
Tumblr media
You should now be at a page that looks like this. You get some basic information, other personas the character has used, and you can go to Titles, or Timeline. For what we want click Timeline.
Tumblr media
You should end up with a list of dates like this. On the right side of the year heading you should see a number. That indicates how many comics/trades/omnis she has been in that year. You can click the number to minimize the year. It can make searching quicker.
Tumblr media
I minimized down to 2011 which is right before FlashPoint happened giving us New 52. From here you can scroll. However it doesn't go all the way to Huntress (1989) #1 and some other stuff may be missing because this is only the Huntress version of Helena Bertinelli stuff. IE you won't get most of No Man's Land or her N52 stuff because she uses different names.
To get rid of this problem you can type Helena Bertinelli in the search bar instead of Huntress.
Tumblr media
Same steps apply, and you'll get more of her appearances!
Now for links to websites to help you on your reading journey!
1. This website is the huge reading list I am using that is incomplete, and still being ordered around, but is a huge help. [Link]
2. This is the Ao3 link to how to read No Man's Land. No Man's Land is hugely important for multiple characters, and Helena plays a big role in the story, so instead of nitpicking her issues I would recommend reading the whole story if you can. The first chapter is just a rundown of events, but the second chapter is the reading order. [Link]
The Ao3 user who made the rundown and list is @havendance on Tumblr. (Sorry for the tagging, giving credit)
If you have any more questions reach out, and I will help to the best of my ability. And I hope this was helpful in some ways to you.

A Deep Dive on All (But One) of the LGI MV Notes
I still haven't found note 8, but all the other ones are accounted for.
Since I still can't get my mind off this MV, now I'm taking it out on the footnotes. These funky little things have been giving us headaches since even before the MV actually came out, but now we actually have more context. These little numbers are attached to phrases which connect to the note itself, you know, like a footnote! I don't think I really have to introduce them that much, seeing as everyone probably knows what I'm talking about already.
After combing through the video a few times, and with the help of this fantastic document by venus-is-thinking, I've figured out the location of all footnotes... except number 8. I would really appreciate help finding that one.
But for now, this is what I have!
Tumblr media
[1] In this situation, it is better to use full names over nicknames. Exclude our protagonist—he is not “that person.” - Now
This one is simple, it's just telling us how to solve the crosswords. As you know, it's solved with the full names of the cast members, including Mai, but not the protagonist of the MV, David. In other words, he's not "that person" because he's not a part of the solution to the crosswords.
It's also worth noting all footnotes appear only after this flashes on screen. Well, with the possible exception of 8, I guess.
Tumblr media
[2] Other examples include Drosophila melanogaster and E. coli. - an albino mouse, arabidopsis.
Drosophila melanogaster is the common fruit fly, and as many have pointed out, Min mentions it in the voice actor reveal video. Arabidopsis is a weed, E. Coli is a bacteria which causes issues in human health. A mouse is a mouse.
What's interesting about the organisms brought up in both the footnote and the line it's attached to is that they're all usually considered pests, but are commonly used in laboratory research. In particular, they're commonly used as model organisms, which from what I understand, are organisms which are experimented on, and the results are later extrapolated to different species. Min mentions in her video how, because the fly shares so much DNA with humans, experiments on it have been very helpful for genetics and biology; same idea with the mouse; while arabidopsis is a good model organism for plants, and E. Coli is a good model organism for bacteria.
Now, how does this connect to the MV?
...
Good question!
I don't have a good answer, frankly, but I can come up with something. Over the course of the video, it's made clear David doesn't see himself as fully human. Perhaps this is another reference; David sees himself as a "model organism" for humans. Close enough, but not quite, and still, ultimately, a pest.
Tumblr media
[3] From Title 17 of the United States Code. - [Definition of a derivative work]
(This is one of the ones I found thanks that document I linked in the beginning!)
Title 17 of the US Code is about copyright, and I'm assuming it contains the exact quote used for the yellow text on top. As to what it means, well, for one, DRDT is pretty much a derivative work of the original DR series. If that's not it, then it may be something like David doesn't feel unique, his personality just derivative of others. As stated before, it's implied he doesn't consider himself truly human, so perhaps he simply "copies" what humans actually act like.
That, or he just plagiarises his motivational speeches.
Tumblr media
[4] The practice of avoiding the number four; it is most common in East Asia. This superstition arises from the fact that the number four can be read similar to the word “death” in multiple languages. - subtract 4, due to tetraphobia
I've talked about this one a bit more in my Roman numerals post. The footnote itself merely describes tetraphobia, but the full quote has some more implications. Basically, both Veronika's and Whit's Roman numerals are on screen as we're told to "subtract 4 due to tetraphobia", which if we take as an instruction, we can connect Veronika to either Min or Xander, and/or connect Whit with Mai.
Already went in depth about this one, not much more to add.
Tumblr media
[5] As the translation has been intentionally botched in many parts, it should not be considered accurate. - (translation needed)
Well, as you probably know, that phrase is actually on screen for a few images, not just that, but you get the idea. This part just isn't translated, though I'm not sure why it's intentionally botched.
So I'm gonna talk about the translation to the words weightedblankettt made on their incredible post about the literature MV. What's interesting to me is that the words on screen seem slightly different from the lyrics being sung.
Sung: "The idiots fancying themselves as revolutionaries, let's give them tickets with lead and make them write with blood. A document of self-denying confessions. Let's do that!" (From the Vocaloid wiki)
Meanwhile, the words on screen are "Pretension - Revolutionary -Lead - Ridiculous - Let’s give them out - Let’s write with blood - A book of self-denial confessions - Let's go!"
Now, maybe I'm reading too much into this, but you see how in the lyrics, the people writing in blood are "them", and in the written words, the people writing in blood are "we"? Well, the exact text is "let's write with blood", but you get the idea. There is also the inclusion of the word "ridiculous" in the text, which isn't in the lyrics. This may just be a limitation on translation, so maybe I'm about to speak nonsense, but bear with me.
The original lyrics speak about shooting pretentious revolutonaries (at least, I'm pretty sure "tickets with lead" means bullets) and force them to deny their own ideals ("book of self-denying confessions"). However, if the text says "let's write with blood", it could imply David (who is the likeliest candidate for speaker) was one of the "pretentious revolutonaries" who was, I assume metaphorically, handed a "ticket of lead". This fits his clearly positive relation with the Ultimate Rebel, which likely existed during their time at UA. In fact, I'm starting to think David may have been involved in whatever thing Xander and Mai got up to which brought consequences to Mai. Just a thought for now, especially because like I said, I have no idea if there are limits with the translation (eg, maybe there's no way to tell "make them" from "let's" for the write in blood thing).
Tumblr media
[6] (Prayer) - [Hands in prayer]
This plays briefly when Min's numeral is on the screen. Apologies for zooming in too much, but the number's hard to see.
Not much to say here. Yep, those hands are in prayer. Good observation. Maybe it has to do with Min's death seeing the moment it plays, but even then, it doesn't give much value.
Tumblr media
[7] Seven is considered an auspicious number in many Western cultures. Let's just skip it. - Mind
(Auspicious means likely to succeed)
Yeah, I got nothing. That Roman numeral is 6, and it relates to Arturo, but I frankly have no idea what the connection is. Arturo has a good future coming? Imagine if he's a survivor, I think that'd be kinda funny. But then there's also the question of why the footnote is on "mind" specifically.
Worth noting I guess is that, in the video, this shows up directly after the "correct/incorrect" code shows up, the one related to footnote 13, and 13 is unlucky. Still nothing on my end, though.
I guess I'll just listen to the footnote and skip this.
[8] ‘Tut, tut, child!’ said the Duchess. ‘Everything's got a moral, if only you can find it.’ - Not found
(Ha, "if only you can find it" indeed)
"Tally 5" this and "Tally 5" that, but we just can't tally up where the fuck this goddamn thing is. The chorus of Literature Girl Insane is literally playing at 0,5 speed in my head 24/7, because of how many times I've rewatched the video looking for this damn thing. Where is it? Is it in the tally 5 image? I sure hope not! Where the fuck-
Anyways, this is a quote from "Alice in Wonderland", where the Duchess tells Alice that there is a lesson to be learnt from everything. Since the footnotes seem to follow a bit of logic, I expected it to be on one of the “Alice in Wonderland” quotes which show up through the video… but I couldn’t find it there. The phrase in the book shows up after Alice wonders if perhaps there was nothing to be learnt from a specific event, so I wondered if the footnote would be attached to a part where David talks about the impossibility of change or something… but also couldn’t find it there.
I’ve looked at the video several times, inspecting everything I could, but I just can’t find it. I’ve looked online, but I’ve never seen anyone point it out. If anyone has any idea where this is, please tell me, I need closure.
Tumblr media
[9] no respect for the classics smh - So sing a degraded copy (certainly this song)
Now, the song is actually a cover of LGI, but the “certainly this song” part is actually part of the original LGI lyrics, so it doesn’t have anything to do with that.
As for what exactly this footnote means… yeah, good question. I think it may help to know the full context of the line itself.
“After all, cry, make noise, shout, go mad / The acclamations is great applause! / So sing a degraded copy (certainly this song) / Now do it like that! Let’s live together!”
The line itself actually fits great with David. No matter what he does, even if he’s lying, he’s acclaimed as the Ultimate Inspirational Speaker. He tells himself to “sing a degraded copy” of… something, then encourages it further: “Now do it like that! Let’s live together!”.
The problem itself is what the footnote means. What classics is it talking about? Songs, books, speeches? I… actually have no idea. Frankly, I’m sorta lost here. Maybe it’s just saying the song shouldn’t be self-deprecating since it’s a “classic”? I’m stumped here. If you have any actual ideas, let me know.
Tumblr media
[10] The Roman numeral for 10 is X - X
Yep, it sure is. I explained this in my Roman numerals post, but this footnote is simply meant to clarify that the X in this scene is Min’s Roman numeral.
Tumblr media
[11] I admit to lying. There is no one named ••••• •••••. I am, and always have been, an only child - suspicious gaps
… W-What?
So, even before the MV came out, people were already freaking out, because the letters of that name fit perfectly with “Diana Chiem”. I feel like pointing out it could also technically be “David Chiem”, but that feels sorta weird.
On first impression: David’s trans, his deadname was Diana, and he just made up the “older sister” bs to hide this fact.
Well, that’s probably not the case. We now have images of someone who could be Diana, so I wouldn’t say that’s very likely.
But as cryptic as the footnote is, the thing it’s attached to is even weirder. What do you mean suspicious gaps?
The gaps themselves may have to do with something else in the video, but I decided to look a bit deeper at where the arrows end up pointing at, and this is the list. I’ll use the way the video notates each object, though keep in mind it’s debatable which thing some of these point at.
<
-Snake (serpent)
Those words are complete synonyms, btw. There’s no difference between a snake and a serpent. However, according to Google, “serpent” is the more poetic/literary term, while snake is more widely used while speaking.
-Assassin’s teapot
Well, it could be the dresser, but the teapot feels more dramatic. An assassin’s teapot is a teapot which can contain two different liquids, and you can pour one or the other depending on what you’re feeling like. Obviously the “assassin” part is that you can pour tea and poison separately.
-Obviously a TV
Yep, sure is. This TV has terrorist iconography on the side, apparently, but I couldn’t find the symbol on Google. Though to be fair, I didn’t research for long, I’m already on enough watchlists as is. Notable is that it’s black and white, colors associated with horror and the Tragedy in the DRDT universe, according to Veronika.
I also looked at the dials in case I could figure out anything, but I don’t think you can reach anything conclusive. You can’t see the numbers in the MV, and the issue with real TVs is that… alright, if you actually know how to use these, I’m sorry for the explanation I’m about to give. Essentially, one of the dials has numbers up to, like, 13, while the other dial goes over 50. But there’s no way to tell from the MV which is which, because sometimes one is on top, and sometimes it’s the other.
Basically, I didn’t find much about the TV.
-A safe with unknown contents
Again, not much on this one.
>
So, what do you get when you put this all together? Well, let’s see. Snakes represent liars… safe can be David’s emotions, but also secrets… assassin’s teapot… terrorist TV… and a seemingly non-existent Diana Chiem…
Oh my God, Diana Chiem is the mastermind of Danganronpa Despair Time!
I’m kidding.
But the ‘terrorist TV’ thing doesn’t leave much to the imagination, does it? Like, what else could it be if not a MonoTV reference?
I’m gonna be honest, I feel like this may be something we’re gonna have to get more context for. Mainly because I get the sneaking suspicion this could be related to ‘that thing Mai did’ again. Or maybe I’m just starting to go insane and hallucinating that woman everywhere. Mainly because of the connection to the killing game I just can’t explain otherwise. Essentially, I’m going with ‘the consequences of Mai’s actions also affected Diana somehow’, and now David’s lying about her not existing to cope, or something?
I have no idea what’s going on with this footnote. If any of you have any actual ideas, I’d love to hear them.
Tumblr media
[12] “Majority rule” is known to be the fairest method of making decisions for a group. That’s why murderers never complained when we voted for them to die - Tallying votes…
(Majority rule?! YTTD?!- No)
This one’s simple, it’s just talking about class trials. Though considering the screen right before this is David crossed out with a death portrait X, I believe this could be further evidence David genuinely thinks he got Arei killed, and just wants to be voted out already. Maybe? Honestly, there’s a few different ways to read that scene. I’m open to different interpretations.
(Wait, how did the person on top left get 16 votes? Three people are dead already-)
Tumblr media
[13] 正 - correct
In case you’ve been living under a rock for the last few days, this is related to the tally5 puzzle. That symbol, among other things, can mean “correct” in Chinese, but more importantly for the puzzle, it’s a way to tally (count) things.
Tumblr media
Like the Dead by Daylight logo, yeah. It counts up to five, then you start making the symbol again. Fun fact: in my country, we sometimes make a square and then slash it diagonally as a way to “tally 5”.
So yeah, it’s just connected to that puzzle. Though it’s interesting for being number 13, an unlucky number, and as stated previously, is immediately followed by footnote 7, a lucky number. I have no idea if that’s important or not, but it’s there.
Tumblr media
[14] Hint: word length of 256 - =
So, uh, anyone know what the hell the deal with all these numbers at the end is? No? Me neither. Apparently we have to find a word of 256 characters, or something. Yeah, not my area of expertise, whatever this is. I’m not even sure if that’s an equal sign or not.
Tumblr media
[15] “Ignorance is bliss” is an idiom used to say that it is better to remain ignorant about certain harsh truths, in order to avoid causing oneself stress. The expression comes from a 1742 Thomas Gray poem (“Ode on a Distant Prospect of Eton College"): “Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise.” - Remaining ignorant, isn't that "happiness"?
Pretty self explanatory, this one. The phrase the footnote is attached to is quite literally another way of saying "ignorance is bliss", so it explains that idiom. The Roman numeral attached is Whit's, which fits with the whole "Your mother is dead, you omit this truth" thing.
Tumblr media
[16] While it was originally intended to serve as a military march, today it is most commonly recognized for its association with circuses and tomfoolery. - [sheet music]
So, I haven't checked what the music in the background (of which we have several shots of, all with the footnote, btw) actually is, but based on the footnote, it's probably for "Entrance of the Gladiators". That's the first song which probably enters your mind when you think "circus music", and yes, it was originally a military march.
The footnote is pretty self-explanatory, but what's notable is that it plays right before this:
Tumblr media
So, the song used to introduce clowns plays right before David's "introduction"? That's funny.
Tumblr media
[17] Not a real word. Can't be found in any dictionary. - Democratic-ly
So, I've seen people read this one in a few different ways, but in my opinion, it just relates to Min's execution. "Democratic-ly" isn't considered a real word... because it isn't. You're looking for "democratically". It's spelt wrong. And Min's numeral is in the back, combined with the rules for the class trial. In her execution, she was forced to get questions in a test wrong, and misspelling "democratically" would be considered a mistake in a test. Maybe it's supposed to be something else, but other interpretations I've seen tend to cotradict footnote twelve, so I'm sticking with my answer.
Tumblr media
[18] A/N: soz not very good at drawing flowers lol!!! - dandelions (weed)
Well, I happen to think those dandelions look quite cute, so don't worry about it!
If you're curious, dandelions can represent healing, growth, and perhaps most importantly, change and hope. Of course, David's video points out the flower of hope and change is a weed.
Tumblr media
[19] A dialogue between two individuals that serves as a discussion of moral and philosophical issues. - Will you forget what you've done, I wonder?
Uh... yeah, no idea. Probably something we can't predict accurately without further information. Maybe it's related to the mastermind, since it talks about forgetting, like the stolen memories? I have nothing.
Tumblr media
[20] It is considered by many to be outdated, providing little-to-no insight on human nature. - [Definition of the model of five stages of grief]
What it says on the tin. The model you've probably heard of before, but apparently it is considered outdated. You know, I had considered at one point that maybe the characters in DRDT were each based on one stage of grief, like denial for Whit, anger for Ace, etc. But it was always a half-baked idea more than an actual theory.
Probably the most interesting part of this line is that it plays almost immediately after Mai's Roman numeral (XI - God is dead), and immediately before Teruko's (XIII - or not to be?). So, there's grief for Mai? Nothing new, really.
Tumblr media
[21] Deriving from the Latin phrase “Et cetera” : meaning “and other (similar) things”, “and so forth”, or “and the rest (of such things)” : abbreviated to etc., etc, et cet., &c. or &c - etc.
Yep, that's what "etc" means. Good job!
Though now that I think about it, what does this imply? Are there more people who worked on this who aren’t related to DRDT? That… doesn’t quite make sense. You’d surely want to list all of them, right? I don’t wanna be the guy who looks into a screen which is explicitly not related to DRDT, so I won’t go further, but it is there.
Tumblr media
[22] The rest is silence. -
As you can see from the time bar in the screenshot, this plays right at the end of the video, so there's not much to say about it. The rest is silence because the video ended. Though I guess I can mention Mai's character profile says she dislikes silence, so there is that, but I frankly don't see the connection.
Conclusion
These footnotes were fun to analyze! Not as interesting as the Roman numerals IMO, but still, there were some pretty wild ones there. There's quite a few I haven't got a good answer for, and quite a bit more that just aren't that deep. But it was still really cool!
Thanks for indulging in my rantings again! This might be the last long post I make about the MV itself, unless I'm struck by inspiration to analyze literally every piece of text there. That would take a while.
... Okay, once more. Has anyone found that fucking eigth footnote? Where the hell is it? Did they just forget to put it in the video? Is it in the windings rickroll somehow? What am I missing?
Take care!

Just wondering; how have you been able to gain so much support on your work and writing style? I already know some tricks with tags and stuff, but do you have any other tricks to share?
Hmmm... That's a very interesting question with a not-so-easy answer! Here's my advice:
One thing to remember is that it doesn't matter how much love you get on your work if it's work from your heart! You may have a love for an obscure character that doesn't really trend much, but you have ideas that you just have to share. Try not to feel too defeated if this is the case and you only get a few notes!
You'll see the most growth of your blog when you follow trends. Is there a new season of a popular show coming out soon? Has something old recently become popular again on TikTok? If it's in your interest set, run with the trend! When things trend, people tend to search related tags more, thus (assuming you've tagged your work correctly) they'll be more likely to be exposed to your work! The same goes for fandoms that stay in the limelight such as MHA or One Piece!
Speaking of correct tagging, in my experience, there seems to be a sort of etiquette to it! Remember to use as many tags as possible that pertain to the content of your post! This could mean listing all the characters you mention, all the ships you mention (including 'x reader/(y/n)/you tags with every character that the reader is shipped with!), acronyms of the series title, and the title spelled out. That being said, try not to use tags that don't pertain to your content. It may be tempting to use tags of a very popular search that doesn't exactly line up with your work, and doing it once or twice won't hurt, but try to avoid it! When you do this, it clogs the incorrect tag, which can be frustrating to not only people searching for that tag but also to people who are rightfully using that tag! It pushes their posts down while raising yours. It also is not likely to benefit you much, as people searching for that tag will blow by your post as it's not what they're looking for!
While you should always put what you want to post first, try to read the room. In some fandoms, NSFW content is unspokenly frowned upon. In some fandoms, it is considered alright or encouraged to put younger characters in sexual or dangerous situations, like MHA. Take things like this into consideration before posting, and if you're thinking of putting an underaged character into an adult situation, take a look around to what others post and what the community deems is okay. To explain, I am not giving you permission to make NSFW content of children, I am just saying that it is considered alright in some spaces, especially when the characters are 16-17yo. Just remember to take note of how the community you're catering to might feel about that post. If it's something considered 'taboo' in that space, don't expect it to go viral.
In my experience, OC/self-ship content doesn't go as far as reader insert/(y/n) content. But don't be discouraged! Share your OCs, ships, and shifting stuff! Someone will like it, and if nobody does, you do, and that's all that matters!
Remember to like and reblog when you're viewing other's content. If you don't boost others, you can't expect to be boosted by them! Like, comment, sharing, copy link, reblog, add more tags, follow that blog, and interact with them. Support others!
Make masterlists and pin posts! A master list is an organization compilation of all your works that fall under a certain category! I have a 'Prime' masterlist that is my pinned post. It is filled with links to other, more specific masterlist, sorted by fandom. This means, that when peoplefind a post that they like of mine and go to check out my blog, the first thing they see is that list! Then, if I have more work related to that thing, they can find it all easily! Make sure you pin these lists or any other important/ new posts! (Note: you can only have 1 pinned post at one time!)
Try joining other communities for your interests like Discord! These are gathering places for fans and most times have space for fanworks that offer constructive criticism, advice, and support! Just remember to practice safety online!
Remember that the algorithm does weird things! Sometimes things get censored for no good reason and that's nothing you can help! Sometimes, people get shadow-banned if they get too much growth at once!
Remember to post consistently! The best blogs post either on a schedule, or often enough to be considered relevent! The more often you post, the more frequently your blog will be featured in top or new posts to your tags! Some searchers engage in their interest daily, so they will always be on the lookout for new content, so make sure they see your name a lot!
Hiatuss are okay! But remember, when you're not posting, someone else is, so when you're offline, it's someone else's turn to have all the attention! It may take some time/effort to regain popularity after a break, and that's perfectly fine!
(If anyone has anything to add, please feel free!)

I investigated the TV trope page and noted something you may have missed: there are numerous examples of the same trope far predating the Harry Potter series. The idea of turning a good character bad for one reason or another, including for shipping, is not a new one. It wasn't started by Harmony fans. Someone could easily have named the same trope The Roman's Odysseus, Zeus the Rapist, or Raoul the Alcoholic. The trope may have been used by Harmony fans, and the existence of those fics may have given the name to the trope, but frankly that says more about the media preferences of the people writing the article. If I had to guess, it was created during the heyday of Harry Potter, as that coincides with when TV Tropes was getting popular (there are approximately 24 pages with Harry Potter-related titles, three of which, including "Ron the Death Eater," are fanon terms). Based on the current Trope-naming guidelines, were the same page created today it might well not mention a character at all but be named "Good Guys Go Bad."
I'm going to have to ask you to provide some kind of credible article on Harmony shippers sending death threats as unfortunately Rowling gets so many of them that my searches are turning up more recent events. Were that to be true it would be unfortunate. Disappointment is warranted, and the expression of that disappointment is allowed, but one should not send death threats, especially not over this.
I can't comment on "classist body shaming and look shaming comments" as I've never seen those particular attacks made. Unless you're referring to the bit from canon where he's got dirt on his nose? Ron is canonically tall and thin-- who on earth is body shaming him for that? And in comparison to whom? Harry is also skinny, with knobby knees.
Attacking Harmony shippers for their reading comprehension is another ad hominem attack and I must request that you desist on that front. For one, it's inaccurate to say that someone who ships Harmony lacks reading comprehension. Reading comprehension is simply the ability to read a text, process it, and understand its meaning. Two people can have equally good reading comprehension but reach a different understanding of the text by focusing on different aspects or bringing different theories to bear.
You seem to adhere to the opposites-attract, pigtail-pulling-is-cute, antagonistic-bickering-is-a-sign-of-attraction school. I concede that is a common enough trope of its own. You focus on the expressions of jealousy toward other romantic interests, the virulence of their squabbles and the explicit details provided. The very things you seem to favor, the "love-hate relationship" are the same things which concern Harmony fans, who worry that such a relationship would ultimately be unhealthy and devolve into domestic violence. If the 'hate' part of love-hate got significantly better over time, then it wouldn't be as much of an issue, but as late as book six Hermione has escalated from trading insults with Ron to sending birds to attack him. In book seven, when Ron returns Hermione punches him, yells at him, and wants her wand to curse him. We don't see them practicing a lot of healthy conflict resolution-- Hermione rightfully bears a grudge that doesn't seem to be resolved until after they visit the Lovegoods, and we don't see them have a discussion where they talk it out as much as they just go through another particularly dangerous event and it makes them ignore and forget any previous conflict-- just like books one and three. Once they're no longer fighting trolls, death eaters, and Voldemort, can Hermione and Ron actually resolve their disagreements?
In contrast, I, and many other Harmony fans, look for exchanges of support and comfort, understanding one another, prioritizing one another. I look at details such as Hermione's words to Harry in the Potions Challenge in book one, her bringing him toast the morning after the Triwizard champions are selected in book four, and his trust in her and prioritization of her desires in book five. There are also the details in book six of Harry comforting Hermione and talking her up to Slughorn and her comforting him in book seven when they visit the Potters' grave or when they learn about Dumbledore. There are a variety of times where they display compatibility by knowing what one another is thinking, or how they're likely to act. While Harry and Hermione do argue, they still treat each other with respect and even while at odds Harry usually acknowledges that Hermione's position is well-meaning. There are other examples where he expresses anger around her, but acknowledges he's not angry at her, but the situation or other people.
Before the explicit introduction of romance in book six, there were only hints in either direction. Even after book six, there was a chance that any romance or attraction wouldn't last. There are many couples who make it through all of high school only to break up as they get older. A first attraction between Ron and Hermione could have flared and burnt out, and Harry and Hermione could have gotten together in the end. Neither Harry's attraction to Cho nor Ron's to Lavender lasted, after all.
Now for the Ginny "fanfic" you mentioned. Are you talking about the forum post of that name from twenty years ago? The one that's not a fanfic, but a conception of ways that Ginny could be removed in book seven? That only actually has only 196 ways? I'll grant you they're not the most tasteful, but this has been done for many characters over the years, including Hermione, Draco, and Edward Cullen.
I'd disagree about who the most toxic people in the fandom are. You yourself reblogged a post acknowledging the toxicity of the Romione fans. In addition to having seen numerous attacks on Harmony fans by Romione fans (including yourself), I've often seen incredibly toxic behavior from Marauders era fans (ex: 1 2 3), especially the ones who ignore most of canon. I think there has been a decent amount of hatred towards Tonks and Remadora (ex: 1, 2, 3) but it's also easy for most Wolfstar shippers to ignore her existence, considering most Wolfstar occurs before the Remadora relationship is even remotely possible. I can't be bothered to expose myself to HarryxDeathEater ships to find examples of them being abusive to Ginny-- I have most of those tags blocked-- but I'm fairly certain Drarry fans have engaged in just as much Ginny bashing and the use of that love-potion trope you don't like.
Accusing someone of "playing the victim card" is a common form of gaslighting and I suggest you remove it from your vocabulary before your erroneous use causes harm. You're also applying it in a situation where it's false. To play the victim card, one must be fabricating or exaggerating victimhood. To see two asks where someone called me a bitch, look here and here. I've deleted others. Here's an out of the blue attack on Lily and here and here are some against Hermione. In your above response you validated what I said about attacks on reading comprehension, but here's another example. And here's the call for negativity against Harmony shippers. As you can see, these are neither fabrications, nor exaggerations and therefore your accusation is false.
Further, you would really rather preach that all Harmony shippers should accept being victims of cruelty, simply because some may have engaged in negative behavior in the past (and a past that in some cases is twenty years and a whole generation of fans ago)? That seems a rather slippery slope, don't you think? It's thinking like that which has synagogues in Canada and Australia firebombed, when those with particular views on Israel/Palestine attack all Jews over their disagreement with the Israeli government, even when those Jews have no say in what the Israeli government does. It's one thing to disagree with a particular person holding views you don't like, it's another to call for an attack on all shippers. Such an attitude only perpetuates toxicity in fandom.
Defend your ship if you like, but if you want a less toxic fandom, constrain yourself to arguing over the text. After all, don't you want to sow positivity for yourself, lest you dislike what you reap?
There is one thing in common with the PeterMJ (Spider-Man/Marvel) and Romione (Harry Potter) shippers; both of their pairings are 'canon' and have everything going for them thanks to favoritism by the author (J.K. Rowling)/ comic writers (Marvel). Despite all that, these
'canon' shippers aren't satisfied with having an already huge following and seek/continue to tear down on other ships (Harmione & PeterGwen) just to push their pairings to front and center. People like these are why we hate fandoms.
I can't comment on the Marvel portion of this ask as my knowledge of that universe is limited in scope and I'm not an active member of its fandom.
As for the Harry Potter part...
I think Romione fans have the issue that while their pairing is canon, it's not well developed in the text (very few pairings in Harry Potter are). We're told that they get together, marry, and have children, yet we don't actually see a lot of development of the relationship blocks that would support the longevity of their marriage. Yes, they went through the war together (although Ron abandoned them for a good portion of that) and yes they were friends, but their friendship was highly contentious and they spent significant portions of each year not speaking to one another or not hanging out (first year before they were friends, second year when she was petrified, most of third year, part of fourth where Hermione was more with Harry, part of sixth year, and part of seventh). Now, technically, first and second year don't count, but honestly, the only year they spend the entirety of together where they don't have a major fight is their fifth year. We know they like each other from Hermione's actions in book six and Ron's in seven, but we don't really see why they do, why that would turn into love rather than a teenage crush, or why they'd make it as adults.
Supposedly Hermione likes Ron because he's funny. Supposedly Hermione's maturity makes up for Ron's lack and he gets her to open up. While there's something to her liking someone who can lighten things up, if that's all then she could just as easily have liked one of the Weasley Twins instead. As a Hermione-type myself, I've often liked guys who were funny, but them being funny isn't enough. The guy I dated when I was 17 was funny, but he also lacked drive and dedication and in the end that made us incompatible in the long-run. Yeah, it's nice to have friends that can make you laugh, but in a partner for life you want someone you don't have to nag all the time when you need them to do something.
We also know that JKR admitted that Romione was her personal wish-fulfilment, clinging to her original idea of the plot, whatever that was, rather than a natural outcome of what she actually wrote. She also said they'd have needed counseling and their relationship was further questioned in the Cursed Child.
This puts Romione shippers on a weaker footing than most canon-pair shippers in other fandoms, making them defensive. Yes, they have the benefit of canon, but not the textual support, other than 'well, our people got married.' They can be threatened by Harmony supporters, who have fairly well crafted arguments grounded in the text for why Harry and Hermione make sense as a pairing. This makes Harmony a greater threat than pairings which are more loosely grounded in the books: Dramione, for instance, is never going to happen in a close-to-canon universe, but it takes very few tweaks to make Harmony work. Additionally, many of the arguments used in favor of Romione are equally as powerful for Harmony, such as the length of their friendship. Indeed, many of the arguments regarding Hermione's feelings for Harry specifically are a lot stronger, because we do see instances where she chooses Harry over Ron, such as in the seventh book.
It is unfortunate that these tend to become rather nasty fights that devolve into personal attacks on the sanity, demeanor, or reading comprehension of the Harmony shipper. I've seen many people go after another Harmony shipper on here pretty nastily, and I've heard tiktok and instagram are worse. Some screenshots I've seen are basically Romione shippers vowing to spread negativity about Harmony just because they don't like some of the fanfic people have written. As if it weren't possible to just, you know, not read the fanfic you don't like.
It would be nice not to get people randomly calling me a bitch in my inbox, but you know, such is life. I don't know if they dislike me more for shipping Harmony or Jily at this point but I really don't care.

Ok so like, are there any transformers comics that you like that show how Megatron got from point A to point B? Like how do you go from workers rights to genocidal conquest? That would be a good story. I apologize if I'm being rude, I just think that fall from grace would be a good story and would like to read it
No worries, thank you for asking! :) <3
Off the top of my head, I would recommend the following issues/arcs for more context on IDW 1 Megatron's overall character development!
It's worth noting that a lot of Megatron's backstory was released somewhat out of order in terms of comic release dates, but below are chronological in terms of Megatron's in-universe personal timeline.
So reading them in this order may not make sense in regards to any larger overarching plot points, but in terms of covering Megatron's backstory, this is more or less a good order to read things in, if you don't mind missing some of the surrounding context for other stuff going on! :)
There is also some skipping around that happens, as MTMTE for example had concurrent release with some other relevant titles, so things are a bit staggered. I've tried to list the below in a reasonably coherent order, as much as possible, but it's unavoidable that there may be some skipping around within the comic narratives as a result of the way some of the comics were released right around the same time as each other, or sometimes years apart! :')
I'm not going to include any of the Spotlight series, as those are one-offs with individual character focuses, but the Orion Pax/Optimus Prime one does touch on some of the early war period; Naturally, Megatron features here and there in a lot of the one-offs and short arcs etc., but the below are the issues/arcs which emphasise him more in the forefront of things and contribute more coherently to building his background.
Hopefully that all makes sense; Figuring out comic stuff can be hard, so I've done my best to provide a decent reading list below that covers the majority of the key IDW 1 stuff for Megs, although it doesn't include every single thing! <3
---Living Under Oppression---
Series: MTMTE / Lost Light
List of Relevant Issues:
The Fecund Moon
This Calamitous Life
Predestination: An Expert's Guide
The Becoming
Towards Peace
Chaos Theory #1
Births, Deaths, and Interventions
The Last Autobot
---Rise to Power---
Series: Megatron Origin
List of Relevant Issues: All Four
Series: Transformers Autocracy
List of Relevant Issues: All Thirteen
---Power Corrupts/Doing Bullshit on Earth---
Series: Transformers Infiltration
List of Relevant Issues: All Six
Series: All Hail Megatron
List of Relevant Issues: All Sixteen
-----
I hope that's a useful list for you; It's not perfect, and doesn't include everything relevant to Megatron's backstory, but this is a decent chunk of the stuff that's relevant to him! :)
(I also might have borked the order of All Hail Megatron and Infiltration at the end there, as I know that was their release order but I can't recall the actual in-universe order of the stories at the moment, lol)
There's a ton of stuff to read over that is Megatron-relevant, though, so I'd say you might want to scroll through the TFWiki page on IDW 1 Megatron here if you don't mind possibly coming across spoilers, to see which plot points are in which specific issues aside from those listed above! :)
If the sheer amount of IDW 1 stuff out there is overwhelming, I'd say just have fun and start with MTMTE if you need a jumping on point, then backfill with the other IDW 1 material as you go along and can better identify what context you might need. (This is what a lot of people did when MTMTE was first coming out, so no worries!)
I know this is a super long answer LOL, but it can be daunting to sort out comic stuff, so I hope this is at least a little useful for you! :) <3

Tumblr media
A wave of nausea hits you, as you sit up with a throbbing headache. Your pounding head feels like it’s about to crack open, and the bumpy searide is definitely not helping, disrupting you from your much needed rest.
Knock knock. You dragged your body to the door, opening it to find a crew member greeting you.
“Hey! Our crew has prepared some meals, the captain asked if you’d like to sit with us to eat as well?”
“It’s fine, I don’t-” rumble , your stomach rumbles like the storms in Inazuma. Oh, how embarrassed you are.
“Oh my, you must be starving! Come on out! It should be ready!” they drag you out, seating you by the round table with several dishes already served.
Adepti don’t need sustenance , you remember what Xiao always said. Which is, or was , true, as you never felt the need to consume food, eating was only an act to satisfy your own taste buds, not that you ate much except for occasional snacks Childe brings you. But archons do you finally understand the word famished .
The Crux’s crew members are all amiable towards you and lively; filling your bowl with rice to the brim, keeps on adding more meat and vegetables to your bowl after seeing you wolf down the food given like you haven’t eaten for days- you couldn’t even thank them fast enough with your mouth full. The captain, boisterous and energetic, would tell you stories of the crew’s sea journeys while you devoured the dishes. It’s the first time we’ve had a Snezhnayan onboard , she told you with her crew’s eyes sparkling and nodding in agreement.
“So...you’re what they call the harbingers, right? From the Fatui-gang thing? Why are you heading to Liyue?” The captain nonchalantly asked you, causing your hands to freeze on the spot.
Swallowing the mouthful of rice and putting down your chopsticks, you lowered your voice, “Um, I was one, until recently. For now I suppose I’m… meeting up with old friends back in Liyue.” You awkwardly rubbed your neck. The harbinger title may once mean everything to you, but not anymore.
“Oh... is that so?” Beidou sensed stiffness from you, deciding not to press any further, “well, starting off fresh doesn't always mean it’s bad, and meeting up with good old friends huh? That is quite nice, must be looking forward to it, huh?”
“Yes...i-it is quite nice…” Beidou chuckles at your slightly flustered response and lightly ruffles your hair, then continues to stuff your bowl with even more food to make sure you eat enough. She said that you looked pale and sickly, urging you to gobble down more food, with you unable to protest with your mouth full.
.
.
.
You’re definitely less agile compared to before. Your body doesn’t feel as light, no longer able to reach high grounds with a simple jump. Your sword is also a lot heavier than it was, or maybe you just lost strength.
“The clean strikes and experience hidden in the stance...impressive indeed, gozaru. ” a uniquely dressed crewmate who saw you practicing your swings clap at your demonstration. You remember Beidou calling him Kazuha, he seems to be impressed at your skills which are aged like fine wine. Your swings are less powerful and slower than before, but you still have your swordsmanship skills and techniques embedded in you.
“Yet you seem a bit… preoccupied. Is there something on your mind?”
You put your blade aside and lean on the railing of the ship, aimlessly tracing the waves that seem to chase after the ship, “I’m not sure what to say when I see him again.”
What should you say when you see Zhongli? Long time no see? I was fired by the Tsarista herself, so I came back? Everything just sounds incredibly wrong.
“There’s a lot of things I want to say, but I also don’t know what to tell him.”
The tingling excitement in you clashes with the anxiousness, uncertain of how to face Zhongli. You were once an adeptus of Liyue, then the twelve harbinger of the Fatui, and now… you lost both titles. You even lost your adeptal powers, could you even consider yourself an adeptus now? How would Zhongli respond when he hears all of this? You sigh, wishing the ship would give you more time for mental preparation before reaching Liyue.
“I’m sure that your feelings, just like the wind, will surely properly reach them. What’s important is that you convey them before everything’s too late.” Kazuha gazes distantly into the ocean. You overlook the lingering loneliness in his last sentence, deciding you’re not in the position to pry into it and put your focus onto the gentle rocking of the sea instead.
.
.
.
Zhongli paces back and forth continuously by the harbour, rubbing his fingers apprehensively with a stern expression on his face which made even Hutao, who was passing by the harbour, not dare to sneak up and pull a prank on him.
Zhongli, usually a calm and reserved man, well liked by people, now shooting up and flinching at the slightest noise of a ship’s horn and looking around with uneasiness, seemingly searching for something, received confused looks from passersby.
Zhongli, who received a letter not long ago, delivered in a hurry by one of Childe’s subordinates, spit his pu-erh tea out when he read the contents. The letter was short, with messy and almost unreadable handwriting which seemed to be written in a rush, and only included a very brief idea of what happened in Snezhnaya, something about you getting exiled and hurt, now returning to Liyue on Crux, telling him to wait at the harbour for Crux and to get you home safe.
That letter gave him no further useful information at all on your safety, or whatever craziness happened to you, which nowhere reassures him. He fumbles with the letter until it’s all crumbled and wrinkly, as if it would speed up Crux’s arrival.
The blast of a ship’s horn grabs his attention, eyes widen at the long awaited sight of the majestic ship.
Zhongli spots you effortlessly among the crewmates, mouth slightly parting as his golden amber eyes lock onto yours. You watch as his ponytail dances freely in the wind, his diamond pupils containing mixed swirls of emotions.
Suddenly, you feel like a guilty child who secretly ate candy before dinnertime and turned your head away at lightning speed as you waited for Beidou to park her ship by the docks.
“Excuse me.” Zhongli hurriedly makes his way to where you are, scuffling across the harbour and pushing the offboarding crewmates aside. He needs to confirm that you’re okay. He halts just before the boarding plank, your figure located at the other end of it, standing slightly above him. A wave of intense relief rushed up his head making his vision spin for a second. You’re alright, you’re safe.
“Zhongli,” the worries you held dissipate upon the presence of him, your quiet voice reaching his ears without getting carried away by the wind.
Time is never enough, everytime he sees you, he is reminded of this saying. Never enough time to make amendments, never enough time to love his children and his people the way they deserved it. Time is never enough, but for you, he’ll always make time, as long as he still has the chance to do so, as long as you’re still here, alive and well.
Zhongli is not a man of many desires. The waves brought you back to Liyue, to him. What more to that would he ask for? He has all the time for you.
“I’m back, Morax.” You muster up the courage and break the silence, your words concise and firm. Morax, the name you liked most, also the one you’re most familiar with. You take a step forward, so does he.
“Yes, my child,”A soft smile gently spreads across Zhongli’s face, one that radiates warmth and relief. “Welcome back.”
Zhongli takes another step, his arm reaching out to you and the gloved palms spread open right before you, awaiting.
“Let’s go home.”
This time, without reluctance, you respond by taking up his offered hand.
You’re home.

DuckTales Theory: The Rightful Heir of Scrooge McDuck
With the finale on the horizon, I've been thinking a lot about where they could potentially take the whole "rightful heir of Scrooge McDuck who is destined to find the Papyrus of Binding" thing. After rewatching the whole series thus far a few weeks ago, it's been on my mind a lot, and with all the news we've gotten about the finale recently, I've managed to piece something together that I think is pretty plausible. I want to warn you guys right away that this post will have spoilers for the finale promo that was released on Monday, so if you haven't seen it and don't plan on checking it out, please don't read any further! That being said, let's get into this.
For starters, let's look at what we know about the rightful heir to the Papyrus of Binding so far. FOWL is taking all of the missing mysteries and it's included, but they can't retrieve this one on their own. In The First Adventure!, Scrooge wrote that it shall go to "the rightful heir of McDuck" and "that those who attempt to harm any of them will be incapable to getting it." Therefore, nobody in FOWL would be able to retrieve the Papyrus because none of them are Scrooge's heirs and they've all tried to harm him and his family in some way. Another thing to note on the topic of this particular episode, despite being the finale of the show, The Last Adventure! is a clear parallel title to The First Adventure!, where the Papyrus was introduced, so it's likely to be found in the finale.
Now, let's look back to The Split Sword of Swanstantine! At the end of this episode, it's shown that Black Heron has gotten a feather from one of the McDucks for some mysterious reason. Many assumed this would be a cloning situation, where they need to get McDuck DNA in order to replicate a "rightful heir" who hasn't hurt Scrooge or his family in order to get the Papyrus back. However, a lot of the fandom seemed to think it was Scrooge's feather. I personally don't think that is the case. In the episode, we see Heron swipe at all of the children.
Tumblr media
She very well could have picked up a feather from one of the kids instead. Of course, the triplets are the first to come to mind because they are essentially Scrooge's heirs, so it would make sense if she was after one of their feathers. But then, I started thinking and realized that none of them really take after Scrooge entirely. Huey primarily looks up to Fenton and Donald (if you're looking for someone inside the family) and leans toward being a superhero/scientist rather than adventurer. We know from the last episode that Dewey wants to be a pilot and has always primarily looked up to Della more than anyone else in the family. Louie you could make an argument for, but he only really admires Scrooge because of his money. He doesn't like adventuring and would rather focus on strategy.
So who could the rightful heir be? Well, there's really only one choice and it fits infinitely better than the rest. I'm very certain that Webby is going to be the rightful heir who is destined to find the Papyrus of Binding. There is a ton of evidence hidden throughout the show since season 1 of this, and I've collected all I could find. I'm sure I even missed some.
First of all, let's get into Webby's character. From her first appearance, she's shown to idolize Scrooge and everything about his family. She's invested in McDuck history and dreams of becoming an adventurer just like Scrooge. In fact, the episode of the series that introduces FOWL way back in season 1 is one that focuses heavily on Scrooge's bond with Webby. There's also the part in A Nightmare on Killmotor Hill! where it's revealed that her perfect dream is quite literally turning into Scrooge. She also believed him longer than the other family members in 87 Cent Solution! There's LOTS of stuff in the show about Webby looking up to him, too much for me to even include in one post.
Season 3 is focused on legacy. We've gotten focus or are getting focus on the legacies of each of the triplets: Huey being a superhero (we could get more of this tbh), Dewey being a pilot and whatever's going on with Louie in the next episode. What about Webby's legacy? Well, it's very clear to me that it lies with Clan McDuck. The last Webby-centric episode we got was The Fight for Castle McDuck!, one that heavily focused on why she's a part of the McDuck family and heavily revolved around getting a placement in it (the whole statue thing). This episode really felt like it was leading up to her ultimate legacy being to follow in Scrooge's footsteps and become a great adventurer. It was also very recent and not counting the Christmas episode which was likely out of production order, the last Webby episode before the finale. (Also, I think it's important to note that the first season 3 episode that heavily focuses on FOWL has a Scrooge and Webby B plot. Just food for thought.)
Another important thing that I just noticed is that in the season 2 finale Moonvasion!, at the end of the FOWL reveal, the camera SPECIFICALLY pans in on Webby hugging Scrooge. This is a deliberate decision, as Webby could have easily been shown with the triplets of Beakley in this scene. But they chose to put Scrooge and Webby front and center.
Tumblr media
Another thing to point out is that FOWL's intentions with the feather is obviously cloning, as mentioned before and theorized by many. In the finale for the promo, we saw two new characters with an interesting resemblance to Webby. It's very likely that May and June are the results of them trying to clone Webby through her feather.
Tumblr media
However, they don't look exactly like her. Their color schemes and hairstyles are different, and we know by the casting announcement that they have different voice actresses. Therefore, I don't think FOWL has mastered the art of cloning just yet. They need a perfect clone of Webby, and much like Bentley and Buford (who appear to be clones of Bradford, I'm gonna be real), they're like Webby but not exactly Webby. I wouldn't be surprised if they were sent to the lost library for being "rejects," where they're later found by the family, explain why they were created and open up the exposition for The Last Adventure.
How does FOWL know Webby is the rightful heir? I don't know. I don't think we'll be able to determine that until we know more. But I feel like they somehow do and plan on making the perfect clone of her to retrieve the Papyrus before the McDucks are able to. This is a bit of a stretch, but maybe Beakley knows about this too and is keeping it from Webby because it opens her up to danger. Who knows?
And one more thing before we wrap this post up: remember when Frank said something from Last Crash of the Sunchaser! would come up in season 3? That had to be about him stating Webby wasn't family. It could very well be brought up again in the context that Webby isn't only family but the rightful heir of Scrooge McDuck himself!
Anyway, that's about all I have. I'm sure there's more evidence, and if you have any, feel free to respond with it or send it to me via DMs or asks! This will definitely be on my mind until the finale airs LOL

I started a new job this week! May I have a celebratory fun fact?
Hm. Alright how about this:
Isaac Newton! 17th century scientist, worked out tons of science on gravity and physics (yay!), also often considered to be the one who invented calculus (boo!). He studied and/or made massive leaps forward in physics, astronomy, invention, language, heat, economics, chemistry, mathematics--there is a reason he's considered the guy who ushered in the Enlightenment and the Age of Reason.
Today You Learned: the dude was also crazy into alchemy.
[Wikipedia has an article titled "Isaac Newton's occult studies" but it seems to me that perhaps 'occult' is too strong a word, especially since a lot of that stuff seemed to be an extension of his devout Christian beliefs. But YMMV on that.]
Basically, like the alchemists and natural philosophers of yore, Newton saw nature as a puzzle to be solved, a mystery that could be understood by the learned alchemists. You have to understand: contrary to what you were probably taught on the subject, alchemy actually paved the way for a lot of modern science, and back in the day different kinds of knowledge were all viewed as being connected. So Isaac probably looked at alchemy and saw what was then-modern science as just an extension of that knowledge, more advanced understanding of what alchemists were already hitting upon. Now I don't know that the man ever tried to make the Philosopher's Stone or anything, but he most definitely read up on the subject, along with other alchemical ideas and concepts.
Newton took a LOT of notes on this stuff, and even included alchemical drawings and imagery in his books. He copied down quotes from alchemists into his own writings.
This wasn't exactly widely known in his own day. Alchemists were starting to widely be seen as sketchy, the sorts of who swindle monarchs for money while pulling fast tricks. This attitude wasn't completely new, by the way--Leonardo da Vinci rants about how alchemists are swindlers and liars too (in a quote that Dan Brown tries to claim is about the Catholic Church because he's a fool). But it had become LAW in England that certain alchemical practices were now illegal, so while Newton didn't actually break the law, he probably didn't think it wise to advertise this stuff.
Also, apparently he was considered a weirdo? He didn't hang out with a lot of people and those that knew him thought he was strange. Newton had at least one recorded breakdown, had a horrible temper, and kept to himself a lot. He doesn't seem like a bad guy but not the sort who had a lot of close friends, and if he did he probably wouldn't share this stuff with him.
After buying some of his stuff at an auction and finding all this weird stuff, famous English economist John Maynard Keyes said: “Newton was not the first of the age of reason; he was the last of the magicians.”
Newton's interest in alchemy is also the basis of the Age of Unreason book series by Gregory Keyes, in which instead of physics and mathematics, it's Newton's alchemical pursuits that yield fruit and the world undergoes a revolution rather than a pure scientific one.

I read this post about storylines in the Pirates of the Caribbean movies, which is a really interesting post and I don’t want to clutter it with something very off-topic, and I had Some Thoughts.
rant incoming
I want to preface this semi-response by noting that I liked the Black Pearl movie. I noped out of the second one after 45 minutes of filler chasing Jack Sparrow around the island in the Cannibal Hamster Ball and haven’t seen but scraps of the others. It probably wasn’t 45 minutes but it felt like total filler and anyway, this post isn't about the movie series.
It’s about framing the female character’s role in stories. And that frame, exemplified in Black Pearl, is typically through romance and choosing who to marry. In the CotBP story, that’s Norrington=socially acceptable, Sparrow=reject social conventions, Will=Romance and True Love (and also rejecting social conventions). The Princess Bride tells Buttercup’s story the same way (it’s one of my favorite movies, and given it has Bride in the title it kind of gets a pass). Leia in Star Wars. Nearly all the girl students in Harry Potter, including Hermoine. Don’t get me started on Dune or Wheel of Time. That’s a different essay.
Male characters don’t get their stories framed this way, or at least not as often. Luke is The Last Jedi, independent of his marital status or lack thereof. Jack Sparrow is a pirate, first and foremost. Harry Potter and Paul Atredies are The Chosen Ones, and while they may choose partners in the course of their stories, they aren’t defined by their love interest’s roles. They certainly don’t pick the girl in order to become the Chosen One.
I’ve made no secret that romance in general just isn't my cup of tea. My favorite stories don’t center love and marriage. Perhaps that’s why I get so annoyed at stories that aren’t ostensibly romances centering female characters' romances to the exclusion of all other development. In Pirates, Elizabeth ought not to have to choose a destiny by choosing a male partner who confers that destiny on her. Why can’t she have A Destiny of her own?
IDK, maybe this is a rant on how Even In Fiction we can’t escape Patriarchy. Men get to choose their destiny, women choose their men. Want power? Marry yourself a rich and powerful man. Tired of court life? Run off with the poor-but-honest farmer lad, preferably after setting all your other suitors impossible challenges. I just get frustrated with a female character’s “agency” being which male character they select as a mate (implied afterward that they settle down and start having babies, which just ugh please). Naturally, if her life does not turn out the way she hoped, it’s because she Picked The Wrong Man, which she can fix by leaving him and finding The Right Man (be sure to feel guilt about abandoning the first one).
This doesn't even cover characters that don’t fit the binary, or have romantic interests that aren’t exclusively hetero. That’s so rare as to only be observed in specialized detectors buried under miles of granite. Boys get Stories, girls get Marriage, everyone else gets nothing and likes it. We R All The Same.
Something something we need diverse stories something something idk work’s been rough and I hate my brain sometimes

AO3 fics
This is a list of AO3 fics I find and need a place to save so I can read them later! I’d save them in a file on my phone but my phone hates me and quite frankly, I don’t blame it.
Note: I also take fic finding requests! I can’t help you find specific fics but if there is a ship here you aren’t interested in or don’t ship but you want a fic for, let me know what genre you want and the ship or x reader and I’ll find it for you! Genres include fluff, romantic, spicy, angst!
Some of the descriptions are the actual descriptions from the fics, however some are just notes I made about them myself. NONE OF THESE ARE MINE AND I AM NOT TAKING CREDIT FOR THEM!
This is mostly just for me but I figured I’d post it so I can create a link for it on my page instead of going through my drafts to look for it.
Guide: ☘️ not completed 🍀 completed ❌ not read ✔️ read 🌶 spicy 🌹 romance 🌵angst 🌼 fluff
If you think an emoji on a fic should be changed, just let me know! I DID NOT PUT ANY TRIGGER WARNING IN THE DESCRIPTIONS! If I think there is something trigger or know there is I will tell you to read the tags and notes but if you read one of these with a mislabeled emojis or you think a 🌵 should be added, please let me know.
On the last day of every month I go through and update the info of if it is completed and how many chapters there are. Because of this some of the info may be wrong as you read this post.

So talking of finales penned by spn writers.
One of my fav comics the last few years has been Spider-Man/Deadpool, written by our very own Robbie Thompson.
Obviously, Deadpool is a character I was always gonna be fond of, since his fourth-wall breaking power / chatacter trait makes him all about the meta, and metafiction is My Jam.
Spider-Man/Deadpool has the additional fun of being about Wade and Peter's relationship specifically, which is just fun and adorable any which way, but the series also makes constant nods to the idea of them as a romantic couple (the title IS a LITERAL REFERENCE to slash fic/shipping). Never in a baity way either. The writing celebrates the idea of Spider-Man/Deadpool without ever teasing the idea it might actually happen. It's mostly Wade explicitly referencing them as a slash pairing in his various fourth-wall breaking speeches, while in the 'reality' of the universe the writing is pretty clear on the fact Peter only thinks of Wade platonically (or occasionally antagonistically :p), while Wade genuinely has an explicit romantic crush, but overall just simply respects and cares for Spider-Man as a person and primarily wants to be and have him as a friend (tho there's absolutely, deliberate, space left in the writing to imagine/fanfic a mutual romance between if you want).
(ASIDE: PETER PARKER IS NOT A KID IN THIS CURRENT VERSION OF MARVEL CANON HE IS 100% AN OF AGE ADULT, like he is in the Spiderverse film - in case anyone was freaking out)
So yeah, that's all fun and sweet and completely catering to my interests.
One of the big, big things about the characters and their relationship, though, is the fact that WADE DOES NOT KNOW SPIDER-MAN'S IDENTITY. And this quickly became one of, if not THE, things at the heart of their evolving friendship/relationship. The closer they get, the more and more you WANT Wade to find out or, better, for Peter to TELL HIM. Because you want them to reach that place of love and trust where they each know intimate things about each other, where Peter cares about and knows he can trust Wade enough to share that vulnerable truth about himself.
So, Peter telling Wade his secret identity - that's, basically, the ship/relationship endgame everyone is rooting for.
SO.
In the *cries* final storyline of the series, this whole epic Thing happens, that I won't explain cos it'll take too long. But basically, the world appears to be ending and in that context of dire and angsty straits - Peter reveals his identity to Wade! *insert Deadpool movie shock gif*
Now closer than ever, they team up with a rag tag collection of other characters to take on the Big Bad and, long story short, they discover the whole epic end of the world Thing has been a fake reality created by the real villain of the piece -
THE WRITER, aka Robbie himself!
Due a series of implausible comic book events they are able to confront and defeat him and he offers this in his defence -
Tumblr media
and I just -
<3
aw Robbie
your supervillain origin story was... WANTING FICTIONAL CHARACTERS AND THEIR RELATIONSHIPS TO GROW?
(#relatable)
When I first read this (which was, oh, back near the very beginning of spn S15) I thought
a) amusing that an ex-spn writer is, like spn itself, writing a meta story in which the writer is the villain
b) it's funny how spn's villain writer and Robbie's villain writer both harm/manipulate their characters for the exact opposite reasons - Chuck wants to prevent the characters from developing, comic!Robbie wants to force them TO develop
(and c) I wonder if this lament over characters not being allowed to grow, and the fact that wanting to change that associates Robbie with villainy, in any way connects to... other writing jobs he may have had... before the comic...)
The tragedy, tho, is that after his defeat, as Spider-Man and Deadpool are locking comic!Robbie away, he tells them his capture doesn't matter because in the end HE WON, because Wade now knows Spider-Man's identity!!
To which we end with this -
Tumblr media
The growth Robbie wanted was denied!
*sad face*
(I forget the in-universe explanation, if there was an explicit one - either defeating comic!Robbie and his fake world caused all memory/experience if that world to be lost/destroyed... or there was genuinely no real explanation and that in itself was a meta nod to how comic book narrative is constantly dropping/discarding/ignoring/retconning plot points in order to maintain the wider status quo of the comic universe narrative)
AND YET - while the biggest growth of learning Peter's identity was denied (presumably because, as noted above, wider comic book canon requires/insists both characters and their relationship remain in a specific, static, status quo - so the industry can keep churning out multiple comics with them without necessarily having to bother with the extra time/hassel of researching specifics of continuity - because, money), as Peter and Wade's further discussion points out, SOME development HAS happened at least. Wade has grown more moral/heroic in how he doesn't immediately kill his enemies. And Peter has come to care deeply enough about Wade to be proud of him for this and tell him so. AND they walk away together side by side, their friendship cemented.
So bottom line - the story ends. And it's not in the BEST way. It denies the readers and the characters (and the writer!) the fulfilment of that key endgame plot point.
And YET.
It manages to still be a funny, heartwarming and ultimately SATISFYING end. One that, tongue in cheek, lampshades the development the rest of the story has, in many ways, been building up to and, using metafictional tricks, tells readers in a way that is funny, entertaining and also feels somewhat apologetic, that it simply wasn't a plot the creatives involved were able to give. But offers SOME growth at least, and leaves things open enough for readers to imagine the characters are poised for more in the near future (...although due to the nature of comics that may well have been jossed by other comic book runs at this point - I haven't read any that include the characters since this title ended).
WHY am I making a longass post about this you ask?
Well
a) because the comic is great and I think more people should read it, consider this a recommend (tho sorry for spoilers!)
b) ...just ...wanted to big up Robbie Thompson for a bit. A++ Robbie, way to land an ending, both in fiction and meta, kudos to you, nice to be reminded that it can be done!
(also in case by some miracle anyone at Marvel is reading this - I said the ending was satisfying, but that doesn't mean I WOULDN'T SPEND GOOD MONEY ON A REVIVAL OF THIS TITLE IN A HEARTBEAT! just because I'm ok with the last comic being the end doesn't mean I don't WANT MORE WITH A BURNING PASSION why must you cancel all my favs?? ...*coughs* so, yes, thank you any Marvel execs for your time...)

Blurb:
When first impressions happen twice.
Welcome to Seattle, the Emerald City and home to The Single Dads of Seattle. Ten sexy single fathers who play poker every Saturday night, have each other's backs, love their children without quarter, and hope to one day find love again.
This is Atlas's story ...
Single Dad of Seattle, Atlas Stark is in over his head. A widower, he's been left to raise his daughter, and his infant cousin alone, while also trying to make partner at his law firm. If things at work weren't stressful enough, his home life is getting hairy too. His daughter's acting out, eager for her father's attention, and she's taking it out on the baby. Already stretched too thin, he's one frayed strand away from snapping. Desperate for help, he takes her to see a therapist. What he doesn't count on is her being a tall, blonde knock-out with sapphire eyes and penchant for motorcycles. Too bad she annoys the crap out of him.
Tessa Copeland's life has never been easy. With a chronically ill mother, she was forced to grow up quicker than most. A successful art therapist, she's determined not to let her baggage set her back. Until her fiancé cheats on her and takes her dog. She's never brought her personal life to work, but she can't stop thinking about the father of one of her clients, or the fact that he's an assuming jerk with a smolder that gets her engine running. But things grow blurry when she finds herself seeking legal counsel from the broody Atlas, and even though the two continue to butt heads, their chemistry is undeniable.
Will flirting with the single dad lead Tessa down a dangerous road riddled with potholes and blind turns? Or will it be exactly what they both needed to finally feel whole again?
**Note: This book can be read as a standalone. It includes lots of steamy scenes, cursing, and of course as with all my books, this has an HEA and no cliffhanger or cheating. If you like single dads who take charge, this book is for you.

Excerpt:
His smile was magnetic. “Fuck, you’re smart.” The gray in his eyes turned almost silver. He stood up and approached her, his body feeling extra big and tall as he invaded her space and pinned her up against the door. His warm breath beat rapidly against her lips. His jaw was working and his eyes so intense, they seared her.
Her eyes shot up the stairs toward the hallway. Aria could come out at any time and see them there. Then what?
“I … I should go,” she said, but her body said differently, and she turned to pudding against him. Her knees buckled, and she would have fallen into a heap on the floor if he hadn’t pressed his hips against hers to hold her up. She could feel his need for her against her thigh.
“You should go,” he whispered against her jaw, his breath kissing her in a way that made prickles race along her skin.
“I should go.”
“You should go.”
“I should go.” Her purse landed on the floor with a thud, her arms wrapped around his neck at the same time his hands gripped her butt cheeks, and he hoisted her onto his hips. Her lips parted for him as his tongue swept inside, claiming her, tasting her, devouring her. Still carrying her, he headed back down the stairs toward his office, but they didn’t make it there before he stopped in the hallway, her body still perched on his. He pressed her back hard against the wall. She whimpered when he bit her bottom lip, her chin, her jaw. His teeth scraped; so did his beard.
Almost as if they hadn’t just had sex half an hour ago, the man was practically frantic, the way his hands roamed her body, caressing and kneading. His fingers traced along her arms, lifting them above her head, where he pinned them up with one hand. His other hand made surprisingly quick work of his jeans. She had to hand it to the man, holding her up against the wall with his legs, keeping her arms up with one hand and unfastening his jeans with another—he continued to surprise her with his prowess and talents.
She had underwear on, but he’d just have to pull them aside to—rip. Oh, well, then never mind. He’d torn them clean off.

Understanding Genesis Dynamic apply_filters()—Part 1
Tumblr media
Introduction
The Genesis Framework is a remarkable development tool for building high quality WordPress sites quickly and competently. Understanding how the framework can help accomplish this goal can be somewhat elusive though. Detailed technical documentation is often lacking and walking through code to discover the hows and whys of things is sometimes the only way to learn.
I spend about an hour a day volunteering to answer questions on both the Studio Press Community Forum and on the Genesis WordPress Facebook page. I love helping people and teaching them to do things better. I don't always have the best answers, but over the last few years, I've literally provided thousands of responses to questions at all technical levels, questions that range from "How do I do such and such in CSS?" to "How do these filters work?"
Most recently, a poster on the Studio Press Community Forum asked a question that had me a little stumped and I gave an answer that worked to solve his problem, but it turned out not to be the best answer. In fact, after doing some research the original poster provided a better answer than the one I had given. This got me to thinking. Maybe I was being a little too lazy that day, or perhaps I was time constrained because of other commitments, but I could have walked through the Genesis code more deeply than I had and gotten to the better answer.
The better answer was to use one of the Genesis Dynamic Filters, but wouldn't it be nice if there were better documentation about Genesis Dynamic Filters? It would save a lot of code walking and bring us to problem solving solutions much faster. So this is the first of a series of articles to teach more about Genesis Dynamic Filters, what they are, and how to use them. If your preference is for visual learning, rather than reading, then I highly recommend Tonya Mork's Know the Code website. If you prefer reading, then please keep going. This series of articles focus on filters that can be used to customize Genesis.
WordPress Plugin API
When it comes to professional WordPress development, it is absolutely imperative we understand that the WordPress developers have given us a way to change system behaviors through events where we can register our own functionality. They've done this so we, as developers, can enhance the usability of WordPress and create a more feature rich environment. We can go in and tweak content, manipulate data, and do all kinds of fun things if we know how to use the event registry features of the WordPress plugin API. These events are known as hooks. Hooks are comprised of actions and filters.
Actions and filters are defined and executed in very similar ways, the primary difference is that a filter is a function that returns a value. Filters are primarily responsible for intercepting, managing, and returning content before rendering it to the browser, or saving data from the browser to the database. Actions are functions that are executed at specific points in the page rendering sequence. They do not return a value.
The two primary functions that we will look at in reference to Genesis is add_filter() and apply_filters().
add_filter() registers your callback (function) to the specified event (filter hook). When the event fires, the callback is executed in the order of the specified priority. The default priority in WordPress is 10.
apply_filters() fires the specified event, which means it loops through the event registry lookup table (array) and calls each registered callback one-by-one in the order of their priority. The callbacks are registered for this event using add_filter.
These functions let you make changes to themes or templates without editing the original file. However, the template or theme needs to have apply_filters() wrapped in an editable area before you can use add_filter() to make the edits via your own callback (function).
We'll dive more deeply into this concept as we continue through this tutorial. For now and for your convenience, here is a list of all WordPress filters, and there are a lot of them.
What are Genesis Dynamic Filters?
The Studio Press developers are very smart. They generally write very efficient, easy to understand code. While there are a few things I've seen in the Genesis code base that I may have done differently to provide greater efficiency or better readability, as a general statement, the code base is written for efficiency. One way the developers have done this is by applying filters dynamically. The Genesis code base includes several functions where apply_filters() is invoked based on specific contexts rather than being hard coded into the framework. You'll still find some hard coded apply_filters() in the framework, but the majority are applied dynamically.
We're going to examine how these dynamic apply_filters() are created in Genesis by looking at the code used to create structural wraps. But before we move into the code walk through, let me mention one PHP debugging tool that I find to be invaluable. That tool is Kint. It works very well with WordPress. I install it on every site I build while it is in the construction phase. It is an excellent replacement for var_dump(), print_r(), and debug_backtrace(). It is simply called by adding d() or ddd() in your code. We'll be using Kint as we walk through the Genesis code.
Genesis Structural Wraps
The first bit of code we're going to examine is the genesis_structural_wrap() function. This function is located in genesis/lib/structure/layout.php. Unless your child theme specifies otherwise, by default, genesis_structural_wrap() is called to create the <div class="wrap"></div> structure for the header, menu-primary, menu-secondary, footer-widgets, and footer.
function genesis_structural_wrap( $context = '', $output = 'open', $echo = true ) $wraps = get_theme_support( 'genesis-structural-wraps' ); // If theme doesn't support structural wraps, bail. if ( ! $wraps ) return; // Map of old $contexts to new $contexts. $map = array( 'nav' => 'menu-primary', 'subnav' => 'menu-secondary', 'inner' => 'site-inner', ); // Make the swap, if necessary. if ( $swap = array_search( $context, $map ) ) if ( in_array( $swap, $wraps[0] ) ) $wraps[0] = str_replace( $swap, $map[ $swap ], $wraps[0] ); if ( ! in_array( $context, (array) $wraps[0] ) ) return ''; // Save original output param. $original_output = $output; switch ( $output ) case 'open': $output = sprintf( '<div %s>', genesis_attr( 'structural-wrap' ) ); break; case 'close': $output = '</div>'; break; $output = apply_filters( "genesis_structural_wrap-$context", $output, $original_output ); if ( $echo ) echo $output; else return $output;
The first thing to note is that this function is designed to receive 3 parameters: context, output, and echo. The context is the id of the element receiving the wrap as a child div. Initially, the output is either 'open' (default) or 'close'. Echo determines whether the output is echoed to the page or just returned to the calling function.
Now let's look at the functions that create the opening and closing tags for the site header container. Both of these functions are located in genesis/lib/structure/header.php
function genesis_header_markup_open() genesis_markup( array( 'open' => '<header %s>', 'context' => 'site-header', ) ); genesis_structural_wrap( 'header' ); function genesis_header_markup_close() genesis_structural_wrap( 'header', 'close' ); genesis_markup( array( 'close' => '</header>', 'context' => 'site-header', ) );
We're going to leave the genesis_markup() function for another article. Today, let's just focus on the structural wrap. As you can see, genesis_structural_wrap() is called in both the opening and closing genesis_header_markup functions. The first call passes a single parameter 'header', which is the context. Why are there no output and echo parameters sent? Because genesis_structural_wrap() defines defaults for these two parameters: $output = 'open', $echo = true. There's no need to pass 'open' if it is the default and, unless otherwise specified, echo is always enabled.
Because the focus of this article is dynamically created apply_filters(), take a look at line 37 in the genesis_structural_wrap() code.
$output = apply_filters( "genesis_structural_wrap-$context", $output, $original_output );
See the $context variable wrapped in curly braces? This is the key to creating the Genesis dynamic apply_filters(). This is PHP syntax for creating a dynamic variable. This is also known in PHP as variable variables.
Every time genesis_structural_wrap() is called in header.php, the apply_filters() in this case is going to invoke any callback we've added to an event named genesis_structural_wrap-header with the add_filter() function. The "header" part of this event is the context passed as the parameter to genesis_structural_wrap(). The add_filter() that assigns the callback would normally be included in the child theme's functions.php.
As a default then, with this one function Genesis dynamically provides you with a way to manipulate the structural wrap for the header, menu-primary, menu-secondary, footer-widgets, and footer. Because these apply_filters() are created and named dynamically, their event names for add_filter() are:
genesis_structural_wrap-header
genesis_structural_wrap-menu-primary
genesis_structural_wrap-menu-secondary
genesis_structural_wrap-footer-widgets
genesis_structural_wrap-footer
With this naming construct, all of these event names have the passed context appended to "genesis_structural_wrap-". Armed with this understanding, there's no reason to search through code anymore looking for filter hook event names relative to structural wraps. Simply just view the source code in your browser…
<header class="site-header" itemscope="" itemtype="http://schema.org/WPHeader"> <div class="wrap"> <div class="title-area"> <h1 class="site-title" itemprop="headline"><a href="http://localhost/public_html/">Sandbox</a></h1> <h2 class="site-description" itemprop="description">Just another WordPress site</h2> </div> </div> </header>
…and wherever you see a structural wrap, the context may be extrapolated from its parent element. On the next page we're going to walk through the code. The last page includes a few practical examples of how you can use this information to manipulate the Genesis structural wrap HTML output.
Code Walk Through
To get started, we're going to add a few Kint commands to the genesis_structural_wrap() function. Unless you are walking through an exercise like this one, it's never, ever a good idea to modify any Genesis Framework core code. This is being done here strictly for teaching purposes in a local sandbox environment. Always remove any debugging commands when you have finished your walk through.
The purpose of this debugging exercise is to see what happens when genesis_structural_wrap() is invoked, examine the values passed as parameters, and the output HTML produced by the function.
function genesis_structural_wrap( $context = '', $output = 'open', $echo = true ) d('------- passed params -------'); d($context); d($output); d($echo); $wraps = get_theme_support( 'genesis-structural-wraps' ); d('------- theme supported wraps -------'); d($wraps); // If theme doesn't support structural wraps, bail. if ( ! $wraps ) return; // Map of old $contexts to new $contexts. $map = array( 'nav' => 'menu-primary', 'subnav' => 'menu-secondary', 'inner' => 'site-inner', ); // Make the swap, if necessary. if ( $swap = array_search( $context, $map ) ) if ( in_array( $swap, $wraps[0] ) ) $wraps[0] = str_replace( $swap, $map[ $swap ], $wraps[0] ); if ( ! in_array( $context, (array) $wraps[0] ) ) return ''; // Save original output param. $original_output = $output; switch ( $output ) case 'open': $output = sprintf( '<div %s>', genesis_attr( 'structural-wrap' ) ); break; case 'close': $output = '</div>'; break; $output = apply_filters( "genesis_structural_wrap-$context", $output, $original_output ); d('------- output -------'); d($output); if ( $echo ) echo $output; else return $output;
These following screen prints are Kint's output from the above commands. The first screen print is the output when genesis_header_open() is called in header.php. This is where you need to follow along in the code above. The first line output is '------- passed params -------'. I added these text headers so we can know at a glance where in the code we need to look. The next three lines are the context, output, and echo values. The genesis_header_open() function only passes the context parameter. The other 2 values are the defined defaults.
Next, we have a value for the theme supported wraps. In the code, the $wraps variable is an array. If the context is not a value found in the $wraps array, the function aborts and returns without doing anything. I've expanded this item so you can see the array contents. The genesis-structural-wraps array values are defined either in Genesis init.php or in your child theme's functions.php with add_filter( 'genesis_theme_support_structural_wraps', 'structural_wraps_callback' ). If defined in your child theme, your custom structural_wraps_callback() function returns an array. The values you see in this array in the screen print are the Genesis defaults. The values in this array will not change for any of the invocations of genesis_structural_wrap().
Finally, we see the output returned from genesis_structural_wrap() when the open parameter is used.
As with the opening function call, the closing function call outputs the closing div tag as can be seen below.
This same process holds true for every element where your theme supports structural wraps. Let's move on to the practical use of these dynamically created filters.
Adding and Removing Structural Wraps
Before we begin with the practical uses of the dynamically generated apply_filters(), let's touch on the important topic of adding and removing theme support for structural wraps. As mentioned earlier, Genesis defaults to structural wraps for the header, menu-primary, menu-secondary, footer-widgets, and footer. But what if you want to add a structural wrap to an element like site-inner, perhaps? Or, remove a structural wrap from the footer? The following code snippets will do this when added to your child theme's functions.php file:
//* Add support for structural wraps add_theme_support( 'genesis-structural-wraps', array( 'header', 'menu-primary', 'menu-secondary', 'site-inner', 'footer-widgets', 'footer' ) );
Pop Question: If we add a structural wrap to site-inner, what will the filter hook event be named?
//* Add support for structural wraps add_theme_support( 'genesis-structural-wraps', array( 'header', 'menu-primary', 'menu-secondary', 'footer-widgets' ) );
Adding Your Own Custom Elements
Did you know that the Genesis Framework allows you to add structural wrap support for your own custom elements? As an example, take a look at the structural wraps supported in the Studio Press Minimum Pro theme:
//* Add support for structural wraps add_theme_support( 'genesis-structural-wraps', array( 'header', 'site-tagline', 'nav', 'subnav', 'home-featured', 'site-inner', 'footer-widgets', 'footer' ) );
Notice that Minimum Pro supports structural wraps for site-tagline and home-featured? There are no elements of these names in any default Genesis setup. These are custom elements added by the theme developer. The developer also chose to use the older nomenclature for nav and subnav instead of menu-primary and menu-secondary. That's not a problem though, because genesis_structural_wrap() translates the older tags into the new tags.
Pop Question: If we add custom structural wraps to site-tagline and home-featured, what will these filter hook events be named?
Because there are custom elements, the developer has to write the code to support them. This is the custom code from Minimum Pro for the site-tagline.
//* Add the site tagline section add_action( 'genesis_after_header', 'minimum_site_tagline' ); function minimum_site_tagline() printf( '<div %s>', genesis_attr( 'site-tagline' ) ); genesis_structural_wrap( 'site-tagline' ); printf( '<div %s>', genesis_attr( 'site-tagline-left' ) ); printf( '<p %s>%s</p>', genesis_attr( 'site-description' ), esc_html( get_bloginfo( 'description' ) ) ); echo '</div>'; printf( '<div %s>', genesis_attr( 'site-tagline-right' ) ); genesis_widget_area( 'site-tagline-right' ); echo '</div>'; genesis_structural_wrap( 'site-tagline', 'close' ); echo '</div>';
Notice the calls to genesis_structural_wrap(). What do these calls do?
Using Structural Wrap Filters
Let's say for some reason you want to add a child wrapper to the header area's structural wrap. You can use this code snippet:
add_filter( 'genesis_structural_wrap-header', 'add_additional_container_to_structural_wrap', 10, 2); function add_additional_container_to_structural_wrap( $output, $original_output ) if ( 'open' == $original_output ) $output .= '<div class="wrap-inner">'; elseif ( 'close' == $original_output ) $output .= '</div>'; return $output;
Perhaps you want to change the structural wrap to something other than a div, like maybe a span. This snippet with do it:
add_filter( 'genesis_structural_wrap-header', 'change_structural_wrap_to_span', 10, 2); function change_structural_wrap_to_span( $output, $original_output ) if ( 'open' == $original_output ) $output = '<span class="wrap">'; elseif ( 'close' == $original_output ) $output = '</span>'; return $output;
Hopefully, you now have a better understanding of how these dynamically created apply_filters() work with Genesis structural wraps. I'm sure that some of you will come up with unique new ways to use them. Please share in the comments if you do.
