My black friend Avery is very protective of her social circles, especially around her white friends. I asked Avery why and she told me that we always say or ask something either embarrassing or downright inappropriate. I told her I only said I didn’t know that black people could tan that one time. I wonder if Donald is code for something? Avery shows a wall of photographs featuring the supermodel Iman. She graced the cover of VOGUE a year after being discovered while attending university. Iman was a fashion muse for Calvin Klein, Halston, Issey Miyake, and Yves Saint Laurent. Yves described Iman as “his dream woman.” Thomasson has often referred to me as his dream woman, in so many words. Mostly he says I am his. Avery tells me to stop pulling focus so she can continue telling me about Iman. Iman used her career to launch two successful business lines: a clothing design line and a cosmetics firm. What did you get really, really, really excited about?uh going to mcgill probably which is a cop out I know but srsly moving to mtl and being entirely on my own and ,,, making it ? It was something that I was so excited going into and has fulfilled so many of the expectations and dreams I had going in 24. What was the best book you read?Y’all I just finished this book called small great things by jodi picoult and it was amazing holy shit. Like I’m not spoiling anything cause everyone should read it but it was about a Black neonatal nurse who is blamed for the death of a white supremacist’s baby and it follows her trial wherein she’s defended by a white public defender who’s #notaracist and yeah it’s sort of a deconstructed story where you get chapters from each of the three POVs along w their histories and it’s great. Also, you get a really great contrast between the overtly racist white supremacist and subtle discrimination of not only the defender but the systematic racism that occurs to put this nurse in this situation and yeah I loved it one side note tho that I feel is important is that it was written by a white woman (v slight white savior undertones I thought) who says she tried to do as much research as possible to portray realistic emotions and subtext but I, as another white woman, am definitely not gonna be the best at critiquing the verity of her writing but it was a really powerful book and something I’ll carry with me into the new year28. What was your favorite film of this year?sorry this is gonna be way shorter than fave book but I really liked hacksaw ridge and also all the marvel movies cause I’m tack 35. Who was the best new person you met?Wow ok I met a lot of ppl this year but probably the two girls I’m gonna move in with next year !!!! 36.
