What was hacked was the pin pads that you swipe your card through, not their computers. Upon finding out about the hacking they sent all of the pads to be analyzed for the investigation and started using the swiper attached to the registers.

I know that. I bought something at that B&N like four days ago and was worried that the debit card that I used may have gotten the information taken out of it. It seems they discovered the issue in early September, so it's extremely unlikely (depending on how long it's been going on I guess).

You only need to watch videos or read books about what actually goes on in there to realise that. Of course you are free to think the two of them can't be compared, but that's indeed a specist stance, as it's based on the assumption that humans' wellbeing is more important than that of animals. Denying this would be like being against gay marriage but refusing to be called homophobic. :)
