Just played(for a while): A random assortment of GB(C) games

8 mar 18 Don’t ask how I got this, I was just on the kick for some puzzles and the GB is the king of puzzles, I got satisfied with all of this but I have to admit and warn you I only spend a short time with these games.

Krusty’s Fun House (1993)

One will expect a licensed game to be trash but this one is fun, notamazing, just fun, it delivers what it promises. I find really interesting that this came out in the early Simpsons days when Bart was the center of the merch so Krusty could be seen as an extension of that. I do have to complain that these levels are clearly designed with larger screen resolutions in mind and getting lost, disoriented or overwhelmed is really easy. Anyhoo, thig game is fun.

Puzzle Bobble (1991)

I started this game and quickly released that palette my emulator used will make things harder, even in black & white when the ball is red and the board is green things will get hard. What else can I say, it’s puzzle bobble, one of the most widely ported and played games ever, the GB version does does feel different from the arcade but you can’t complain on this platform.

Denki Blocks (2001)

I was very surprised when I saw the Denki logo, I have a history with this developer, their platformer with Beckham (I have to talk about that game soon) has been my totem for strange, obscure and fun and turn out this game fits that description too, the game consists of assembling a figure out of the pieces set give on the board but you have to move all the pieces at once like a collective, so you have to use walls and static pieces to organize the desired piece. It’s such a simple premise but it works so well, a hidden gem dare I say.

Magical Drop (2000)

When this game booted I was very surprised at the anime characters flashing on the screen during the intro I was all “Is this a puzzle game?!” and it is, a very simple one but it’s fun. the anime characters are nothing but an illusion of choice, you choose your character and jump to the game but on my time playing they had no effect beside appearing on the board’s background and i was too focused on the puzzle to notice them. This game is another match 3 type of deal but here you PICK UP the stones and move them across the board, that’s original enough for me and got me engaged for a while.

Mr Driller (2000)

This game is very simple but very effective, is one of those addicting models that you could see on modern phone games. the basic idea is that you have this cutie pie and she has a drill, she drills down this land of sweets but a bad move may make all the sweet fall on you. I have to praise this game’s graphics, they’re gorgeous and a good example that art direction is more important than graphical power.

Qix Adventure (1999)

When I saw the title of this game I shrugged and took it with me because it was interesting enough but nothing could prepare me for what I saw when I booted the game. Are you people familiar with Qix? It’s a puzzle game where you move your cursor across the board, draw a line and gain territory. This game is Qix plus pokemon and I was fucking blown away, I should not be surprised, pokemon clones were a dime a dozen but adding Qix to the mix blow everything out. I admit this game was a wee bit hard but I bet I could enjoy this in a different context but right now I’m too weirded out and too frustrated to dedicate more to it.
