"They could be the army--"
"Or hunters--"
"They could be--"
The suffusion drained away from Jack's face. Ralph waved again for silence.
"Jack's in charge of the choir. They can be--what do you want them to be?"
"Hunters."
Jack and Ralph smiled at each other with shy liking. The rest began to talk eagerly.
Jack stood up.
"All right, choir. Take off your togs."
As if released from class, the choir boys stood up, chattered, piled their black cloaks on the grass. Jack laid his on the trunk by Ralph. His grey shorts were sticking to him with sweat. Ralph glanced at them admiringly, and when Jack saw his glance he explained.
"I tried to get over that hill to see if there was water all round. But your shell called us."
Ralph smiled and held up the conch for silence.
"Listen, everybody. I've got to have time to think things out. I can't decide what to do straight off. If this isn't an island we might be rescued straight away. So we've got to decide if this is an island. Everybody must stay round here and wait and not go away. Three of us--if we take more we'd get all mixed, and lose each other--three of us will go on an expedition and find out. I'll go, and Jack, and, and . . ."
He looked round the circle of eager faces. There was no lack of boys to choose from.
"And Simon."
The boys round Simon giggled, and he stood up, laughing a little. Now that the pallor of his faint was over, he was a skinny, vivid little boy, with a glance coming up from under a hut of straight hair that hung down, black and coarse.
He nodded at Ralph.
"I'll come."
"And I--"
Jack snatched from behind him a sizable sheath-knife and clouted it into a trunk. The buzz rose and died away.
Piggy stirred.
"I'll come."
Ralph turned to him.
"You're no good on a job like this."
"All the same--"
"We don't want you," said Jack, flatly. "Three's enough."
Piggy's glasses flashed.
(Stopping so ya can read)
Stop being mean to him!!

Guide to LotF Ships:
Hello! So, it's been a while since I last made a proper post on here and I've been thinking of making something like this for a little while now so here goes! Basically this is a guide to the 'main' ships in the fandom (aka the ones I've seen the most in fanfiction and fanart). Each ship will be divided into two sections-canon interaction and fandom interpretation. I figured this might be helpful to anyone new to the fandom or just interested in why people ship certain things!
(apologies in advance for any incorrect quotes, chapter numbers or other errors- I decided it would be a great idea to write this at 3am while citing everything from memory except one quote)
1.) Jalph (Jack x Ralph)
Easily the most popular ship in the fandom, it's not surprising to see why this is a ship given that it involves the two most prominent characters in the novel. However, there is also a sizeable amount of fans who dislike the pairing- potential reasons for this will be covered below.
Canon Interactions:
Where to start with this one? Jack and Ralph's relationship is arguably one of the most significant ones in the novel, providing a source for much of the conflict within the story. At the beginning, their relationship is amicable and they consider each other to be friends- 'They were lifted up, were friends'. However, as the novel progresses their differing opinions lead to them becoming more and more at odds with one another until eventually their relationship falls into complete disrepair. In the middle of the novel their relationship goes through a period of love/hate- 'They stared at each other, baffled, in love and hate' (if you've been in the fandom for a while or are a jalph shipper you've probably seen this quote pop up a fair bit). At the end of the novel, however, it is clear that at the very least Jack seems to completely hate Ralph (throwing a spear at his chest 'with full intention', heavily implying he genuinely intended to kill him). Ralph also asks him 'Why do you hate me?' at one point, which Jack neither accepts nor denies. Ralph seems to have some regrets about the downfall of their relationship, with the memory of he, Jack and Simon climbing the mountain in Chapter 1 being the thing that ultimately causes him to break down and cry in the final chapter.
Scenes which are popular with shippers include the argument between Jack and Ralph in which the 'love and hate' quote appears, with several having pointed out that it sounds a bit like the sort of argument a married couple would have ('I work here all day with nothing but Simon and you come back and don't even notice the huts!'). Some people also consider Jack following Ralph to Castle Rock in Chapter 7 because he 'Couldn't let [Ralph] do it on [his] own' as a sign that Jack cares about Ralph's wellbeing although I personally disagree with this. The early interactions between Jack and Ralph in which they have a more positive relationship are also fairly popular. There are literally so many more examples I could bring up here, I could and probably should make a whole separate post about it.
Fandom Interpretations:
Jalph is portrayed in a number of different ways within the fandom. Generally it is considered to be a love/hate or enemies to lovers pairing, with the relationship between the two varying from a friendly rivalry to complete enemies depending on the fic (the hate aspect of their relationship is more often toned down in modern AUs/school AUs, understandably so as it would be a bit weird if Jack was trying to murder Ralph in the middle of a normal school setting- not that I wouldn't read that fic if someone wrote it).
While some fics portray jalph as a perfectly healthy romantic relationship, others explore the unhealthy aspects of this relationship (especially fics which are closely linked to canon/follow on from canon events) and can even portray Jalph as outright abusive, although this portrayal isn't very common. Some fics involve Jack having a redemption arc, allowing him and Ralph to have a healthier relationship, while in others their relationship remains unhealthy and reliant on their 'indefinable connection' which Golding suggests binds them together.
Generally anti-jalph fans believe that Jalph glorifies and in some cases fetishises abusive relationships, and that Jalph would not last in the real world as a result of it being extremely unhealthy.
2.) Rogermon (Roger x Simon)
While this relationship has little basis in canon, it is incredibly popular within the fandom to the point that it is most likely the second most popular ship after Jalph. The ship seems to stem more from the fandom's interpretation of it more than canon, similar to Rogice.
Canon Interactions:
As mentioned above, Roger and Simon interact very little in canon. This may be due to them both being fairly introverted characters who typically only interact with a limited number of other characters (with Roger primarily interacting with Jack and Simon primarily interacting with Ralph and Piggy). However, they were canonically both a part of the choir prior to arriving on the island and so likely knew each other before the events of the novel. There is one scene in canon which may be relevant to mention here (although this is admittedly a bit of a stretch), and that is in Chapter 7 when Roger is the one to interrupt Ralph and Simon's conversation by the rocks (the 'I just think you'll get back alright' conversation. you know the one). I'll leave you to interpret that as you will.
Fandom Interpretations:
Part of the reason for this ship's immense popularity is its potential. Shippers generally seem to like how Roger and Simon are portrayed as foils to one another in canon- Simon is the representation of goodness and purity while Roger is the representation of evil and sadism. I've heard the phrase 'opposites attract' thrown around in reference to Rogermon before to put it bluntly, people seem to like to contrasting edgy and soft boi aesthetics. In fanworks, Simon is often portrayed as sweet and accepting while Roger is very protective and seems to have a soft spot for Simon which contrasts his cold attitude towards other characters. They often appear in Jalph fics as a 'b-pairing'.
I don't think there's exactly an anti-rogermon part of the fandom in the same way that there are anti-jalph fans, but some people don't ship it for a number of reasons. The main reason is that there are other popular ships involving both Roger and Simon, Rogice and Ralmon probably being the most popular of these. There aren't really all-out shipping wars in this fandom from what I've witnessed (we're a very chill bunch), but I have seen some friendly discourse about Rogermon and Rogice in particular. In addition, it doesn't have much basis in canon and those who aren't a fan of Roger's personality (being a canonically violent and sadistic individual with sociopathic tendencies) may view this and other pairings involving Roger as inherently unhealthy. However, it depends on how you interpret the character and the ship- some may argue that Simon balances out Roger's more 'evil' personality traits and helps to ground him somewhat.
3.) Ralmon (Ralph X Simon)
This pairing isn't as popular as the above two involving the same characters, but still has a strong fan following of its own. Like with Jalph, there is a lot of interaction between Ralph and Simon in canon which provides some basis for Ralmon as a ship.
Canon Interactions:
Ralph and Simon have been friends from the first chapter of the novel and maintained a largely positive relationship throughout. The majority of interactions between them have bee1n interpreted by the fandom as Simon having a crush on Ralph, such as when Simon stroked his arm 'with shy liking' in the first chapter. The scene in Chapter 7 in which Simom crashed into a tree because he was staring at Ralph is also a popular one, as is the slightly later scene in which Simon encourages Ralph by telling him 'you'll get back alright' followed by the two smiling at one another. An interesting point to bring up regarding the latter example is that Ralph recalls this later on in the final chapter. There are also a few examples of Ralph liking Simon at least platonically, such as when he is the one who reacts the most strongly to Simon's death (although this may be more to do with his role in it rather than Simon being the one who died). Ralph and Simon are also the only ones who continue to work on the shelters together after all the others left, something brought up during Ralph's argument with Jack in Chapter 3 ('Simon. He helps')
Fandom Interpretations:
Ralmon is often interpreted in fanworks as being a soft and fluffy pairing, contrasting many of the other pairings on this list. Their relationship is usually portrayed as healthy and wholesome, with Simon often having the stronger feelings at first. Think slowburn friends-to-lovers type fics. The angstier fics tend to deal with Simon's death and Ralph's role in causing it, though Simon is alive in the majority of fics (as a result of an AU or the fic taking place prior to his death).
Again, there isn't really a shipping war between Jalph and Ralmon, but if our fandom was bigger and more aggressive there probably would be.
4.) Rogice (Roger X Maurice)
This pairing bears some similarities to Rogermon in that it doesn't have much basis in canon and seems to be liked largely due to the characters' contrasting personalities.
Canon Interpretations:
Again like Rogermon, Roger and Maurice were in the choir together prior to arriving on the island and so know each other from before the events of the novel. Their relationship in canon seems to be somewhat positive, with the two shown spending time together (aka bullying kids together) voluntarily in Chapter 4. They also both go with Jack to steal Piggy's glasses in Chapter 10, indicating they are at the very least willing to and capable of working together to achieve a common goal.
Fandom Interpretations:
This pairing, as mentioned above, has a focus on Roger and Maurice's contrasting personalities, with Maurice being cheerful and good-humoured while Roger is more cold and aloof. Their dynamic is often used for comedic purposes, with Roger using sarcasm in response to Maurice's memeing. They seem to balance one another out, with Roger being the straight man minus the straight part obviously to Maurice's wise guy.
In fanworks, the pairing isn't portrayed very often within the canon universe from what I've seen, generally appearing within modern AUs and as another b-pairing to Jalph fics. It is usually fairly fluffy, but in fics where Roger is portrayed as more emo or with a tragic backstory, it can be more angsty with a hurt/comfort edge to their dynamic.
I've mentioned this pairing being at odds with Rogermon before, but the closest I've seen to a shipping war was one that took place between the characters themselves in a fanfiction.
5.) Jager (Jack X Roger)
An interesting pairing because while it does have a decent amount of canon basis, it isn't nearly as popular as some of the ships which don't. This may be because there are a fair few fans who dislike one or both of these characters, or because the pairing isn't usually as fluffy as some of the other popular pairings. Even so, it's popular enough to be considered one of the 'main' pairings in my opinion.
Canon Interactions:
Firstly, the obligatory 'they were in the choir before the island so they already know each other'. Jack and Roger's canon relationship is difficult to interpret. It seems that they get along at least somewhat since they often spend time together, with Jack deliberately seeking out Roger to show him his face paint in Chapter 4. I'd also like to point out that the only time Roger smiles in canon is when he's making fun of Jack in this scene ('You don't look half a mess'). Roger also voluntarily accompanies Jack and Ralph up the mountain to look for the Beast, and by the end of the novel he appears to be Jack's second-in-command of sorts. I'm going to drift into speculation for a moment here- personally I interpret this relationship as Jack seeing Roger as one of the only people (if not the only person) who truly understands him- in one scene Jack 'looked round for understanding but found only respect', which could suggest that this is something he values. However, Roger's values seem to differ from Jack's and I think Jack starts to realise this towards the end of the novel- he appears to be afraid of Roger after discovering he was directly responsible for Piggy's death ('the hangman's horror clung to him'). I also don't believe Roger sees Jack in the same way- Roger seems to only be tolerating Jack's position as Chief towards the end of the novel, internally questioning his authority in Chapter 10 and almost pushing his shoulder when walking past him in Chapter 11. It is implied that he dislikes Jack (or at least has bad intentions towards him) in Chapter 4 as well- 'a darker shadow crept across the swarthiness of his face' upon seeing Jack, which could be foreboding.
Fandom Interpretations:
As mentioned earlier, Jager is not always portrayed as fluffily as other pairings. It seems to often be portrayed as quite unhealthy, or sometimes it involves Jack and Roger, for lack of better words, being gay and doing crimes. Their relationship seems to bring out the worst in one another in these sorts of fics. However, a popular headcanon amongst Jager shippers seems to be Roger having a one-sided crush on Jack. Sometimes they have a friends-with-benefits style relationship in works featuring this headcanon, but I've also seen ones where they are regular friends. This tends to appear in Jalph fics in which Roger is not already paired up with Simon or Maurice. Another interesting take on the Jalph side of this pairing is Jalger, or the polyamorous ship between Jack, Ralph and Roger. I've weirdly seen multiple fics in which Jack and Ralph become aware of Roger's crush on Jack and they end up in a three-way relationship. That's technically a whole different ship though so I won't talk about it in depth here. Fluffier Jager fics are often friends-to-lovers, with the two being very close friends in the beginning if not best friends.
*
Well, that's all I've got for now! Thank you very much for reading and I hope you found this guide interesting. Apologies for it being an absolute mess by the way, it's 4am and I have no idea why I decided to write the whole thing now (we love insomnia). If you have any requests for ships I haven't covered here, feel free to shoot me an ask and I'll do my best to cover them! I might end up making a second part at some point anyway since there are still ships I want to talk about (e.g.- ralphiggy because it's super underrated)
Okay, bye for now ;;;

I wrote an essay on Jalph because I’m a maniac and a nerd - here’s that.
(Apologies for how inevitably awful it is, but I really hope you enjoy!)
When analysing the unique and vastly contrasting characters of Jack and Ralph within Lord of the Flies, published in 1954 and written by William Golding, it is evident that some homoerotic undertones and implied mutual romantic attraction are prevalent. As the book’s major theme of the descent into savagery and complete abolition of perceived civilisation continues to alter the genuine nature of human interactions and behaviour, both as portrayed by individual relations and internally conflicting morals, the actions of Jack and Ralph towards each other also decline in ethicality as the original tension, inferred to be fuelled by an amorous motive or ideal, transforms into a rivalry and contrasting group dynamic.
Upon their first encounter with each other, the two typically somewhat extroverted, natural leaders, who have and continue to express social attributes (although Ralph is, admittedly, poor at articulating his ideas and emotions), are reduced to conversing almost exclusively using brief expressions which lack eloquence. They become awkward and demonstrate many of the characteristics frequently attached to the embarrassment found in first love, particularly in youth, and immediately after meeting an individual attraction is felt towards. Only a few pages into their first interactions, following Ralph summoning the equally stranded choir boys through use of the discovered conch shell, Jack and Ralph “smiled at each other with shy liking” (page 20), indicating a definitive, automatic bond developed later through further conversation and actions. This quotation implies something beyond mere desired friendship and perceived platonic compatibility, especially regarding the conflicting symbolic interpretations of both characters; Jack, a power-hungry, savagely primitive persona who strives to enact a regime resembling a dictatorship upon the boys, and Ralph, more representative of safety, civilisation, clearer ideas of morality, a tie to the adult world, and democratic government. Such a vastly contrasting set of ideals enforces a sense of tension and easily sparked conflict due to the disposition of having a fragmented relationship, and also alludes to the potential presence of a trope frequently incorporated into fictional relations, but also ubiquitous within genuine people, in keeping with Golding’s apparent views on society and human nature being dark but complex, with many layers of emotions and feelings in which love and hate are often blurred and become convoluted.  Ultimately, there is a recurring theme throughout later interactions, which links back to the original expression delivered in a manner which suggests romantic chemistry.
Later on that exact page, there is a reinforcement of suggestive inclinations between Jack and Ralph, more explicit in the sense of lacking the vaguer, childish romance usually portrayed. Ralph is described to have “glanced admiringly” at Jack’s “grey shorts,” also illustrated to be “sticking to him with sweat,” focusing more greatly on the physical attraction experienced despite the other, equally relevant aspects of their relationship and mutually expressed desire. These are indicated via discussion and the emotional impacts they and their actions have on each other, regardless of the confidence expressed by both parties to be significant, commanding features of their personalities. This demonstrates that, completely besides all other implications, traits, motives and behaviours made more blatantly obvious throughout later chapters, the dynamic between both boys has undeniably romantic undertones, reminiscent of youthful infatuation, which, at an early stage in the novel, could develop further or be stunted to the extent of nonexistence, at least on behalf of one individual character.
As the story progresses and Jack and Ralph’s views on society and leadership become increasingly more extreme and disparate, Ralph appears to remain attached, as expressed by his miserable behaviour and constant pining, which Jack ignores and remains fuelled only by a desire to impress, succeed, and hunt, prioritising immense gain in power and authority above all relationships and other necessary factors to be considered in attempting survival. This includes the maintenance of his original closeness with and immediate appeal found in one with Ralph, who he seemed to care about and strived to please before his views on ethicality and its importance spiralled into a level of near nonexistence. When Jack finally abandons Ralph and decides to establish his own group, intent on hunting and killing, Ralph sinks into a state of pure desperation, where his hope diminishes to a degree not previously reached and his child-like optimism is replaced, eventually, by a cynicism seemingly brought on by the atrocities he has witnessed and an inexplicable unhappiness made perceptible by Jack’s ceasing to comply and live within the body of civilisation he has attempted to create. Ralph expresses to Piggy, with a buoyancy appearing to have ulterior motives and emotions behind it, that “when the sun goes down, he’ll come” (page 140), perhaps demonstrating more his personal desires than a rational outlook on the situation. His ability to behave logically deteriorates significantly when in Jack’s presence and influenced by a willingness to be seen favourably by him, truly showing that this opinion is valued on a level only explained well by viewing the implied romantic undertones and feelings Ralph has for him. Ralph’s mental and physical regression essentially occurs in close adherence to the collective descent into savagery and loss of key priorities experienced surrounding the previously crucial objective of being rescued – this aligns more specifically with Jack’s loss of innocence and civilisation, as well as the evident decrease in his own moral values and closeness to Ralph and his group, which extends as he draws closer to animalistic primitivity and further away from the categorically human emotions and behaviours illustrated formerly through their seemingly intimate connection.
Finally, towards the end of the novel itself, when engaged in conversation with Samneric and in relation to his internal, paranoia-fuelled monologue (whilst being hunted down by Jack’s tribe following Piggy’s brutally-enforced demise and an intense fight between the respective protagonist and antagonist), Ralph fully articulates and confronts the original intent and indubitability of his relationship with Jack, stating that “there was that indefinable connection between himself and Jack; who therefore would never let him alone; never” (page 204). The use of the word “indefinable” automatically implies to the reader that it’s difficult to clearly vocalise and hence perhaps something perceivably obscene and profane when considered with historical context, a concept which could easily be applied to both the stigma surrounding same-sex attraction and the inherent embarrassment and denial of many first genuine ardent sentiments. His connection with Jack is beyond expression via the medium of words, which is an attribute typically attached to love because of the candid and profound nature of such a feeling and its portrayal within society. This connection is perhaps a reference to the mutual romantic interest suggested from the beginning of the text, to their immensely contrasting and intense power struggle, to the end of the novel, where although all former positive relations have completely deteriorated, some elements of their past interrelation still cannot be truly denied, even by the omniscient narrator and Ralph himself. Additionally, on page 209, Ralph also suggests his feelings of remorse over their loss of friendship through the combination of question and statement underlying in “what have I done? I liked him – and I wanted us to be rescued - “, a comment which admittedly could feasibly be interpreted as solely reminiscing over a tragically lost platonic relationship through the pull of power, bloodlust, and an inherent desire to attain complete dominance and superiority, which is illustrated particularly through Jack’s motives and underlying characteristics. However, when considered in special regards to the implications and allusions to romance between the characters of Ralph and Jack, I personally believe it could be increasingly sufficient evidence to the aforementioned, especially when analysing prior interactions and the definitive reference to them as an individual unit that lies somewhat outside the general bubble of their vaguely structured civilisation (or lack thereof). This could be construed as exhibiting their connection as beyond the early, childish comradery shown within their first engagements and fundamental original character development, and also as something greater and more complexly multi-faceted than the pure, largely unfacilitated, burning hatred signified later on, in keeping with Jack’s metamorphosis into a tribal, aggressive dictator, which is inevitably incredibly far from the C sharp-singing choir boy he was originally portrayed as.
Overall, as far as it can be legitimately argued, I would conclude that there is adequate evidence and textual reference to the viability of romantic undertones lying within Jack and Ralph’s characterisation and collective relationship, and that it could easily be proclaimed as a valid interpretation, despite the tendency of disagreeing parties to expostulate and contradict without consulting genuine quotations or implications found in the novel itself. However, as much as significant corroboration is located within the early passages of Lord of the Flies, it is equally rational and reasonable to state that as the book progresses and tensions are increased exponentially between the two characters, a considerable amount of their previously clear attraction to each other ceases to exist almost entirely, as Jack becomes increasingly fixated with the idea of complete, totalitarian authority and desire to engage in violent behaviours, eventually almost murdering Ralph in a severe conflict, leaving the ending of potential return to society lacking ultimate clarification in many aspects. Regardless, despite the inevitability of the relationship being fundamentally damaging and hence understandably corrupt, I personally believe that it was alluded to throughout the text, and is perhaps merely used by Golding as a subconscious device to show the effect of potential, primitive descent into savagery and lust for power on human relationships and interactions.

The Day He Loved Red
Tumblr media
Summary: Mac meets someone from his old high school. Turns out that's also his high school crush. Kinda. Yeah.
Words: 1,658.
Warning(s): Nah. It's maybe excessively fluffy, but uh, yeah, you know me.
Angus MacGyver was Blue. No, not in a melodramatic way. Mac was Blue. Just Blue. He was a refreshing cool spring day, the sloshing sound of water in a glass, and the feeling of piercing, icy eyes staring into your soul.
Angus MacGyver hated red. The colour red symbolised pain, fire, and most of all, it resembled Nikki. It symbolised the thick cloud of lust and emotion he used to feel for her, the dark sheets they used to make love under. It symbolised the burning sensation of his breaking heart when she betrayed him. Red used to be the colour of love, now it only brought Mac pain.
The first time MacGyver meets you is in high school. You’re red. A small, bright red streak in a world of dark greys and browns. Yet Mac, as naive as a young, scrawny boy can be (yes, apparently even people with an IQ over 140 can be naive, when presented with the appropriate dose of hormones and the lack of understanding of the opposite sex), barely spares you a second glance. He walks away from the beautifully unique, intelligent girl with her large glasses and her remarkably large forest of bright red hair. Mac goes on with his life. So do you.
In the same year, both you and Mac graduate. Mac is 17, you are 16. You’re not a lot smarter than Mac, and probably not nearly as ‘creative’ when it comes to old metal scraps and machinery, but your intelligence leans more to the 'socially acceptable’ side of the wackiness that is the school system. Because while Mac is a 'homo universalis’, you assume his lack of interest in literature and theory explain why he graduates only a year earlier than the common student (not that you love theory, you’ve just been a little more subtle in your endeavours to obtain knowledge. Incinerating mopeds has never really fit in the school’s curriculum).
While you’re giving your graduation speech, Mac can’t help but notice the way the wispy strands of your hair sway with the wind, like flames dancing in the dark night sky. With the confidence of a young, scrawny boy on hormones, Angus MacGyver represses this short moment of infatuation. It’s the last time he’ll see you anyway.
Tumblr media
Fate never works as one thinks it will, and in true fashion, you and Mac have the chance to meet again. This time, by the hands of Patricia Thornton (she swears your recruitment has nothing to do with your history with Mac, but fooling a not-so naive, not-so scrawny young man has proven to be a little trickier than necessary). When Jack and his younger partner arrive at the Phoenix Foundation a little more injured than usual, Patricia announces the need for a medical expert (because although Mac is a genius, he also has the annoying urge to protect everyone, but himself). Even though Mac tries to argue that his method of 'first aid’ works fine until they get to the hospital, both Patty and Riley are fed up with trying not to blow their cover after each mission.
Mac reluctantly agrees. Reluctantly. Maybe less reluctantly after seeing your picture. Maybe, just maybe, his heart skips a beat.
The following Monday, you seem to already be setting up your little doctor’s office when Mac arrives. He doesn’t say it, but you’ve definitely grown more beautiful, more red. One might even say you’re Red now. The youngest member of the Phoenix Foundation would agree. Yet, upon seeing you so Red, Mac’s afraid. It has barely been six months since Nikki’s betrayal, and hurt enters his barely healed heart again.
It takes a moment for you to notice him standing in the doorway, and it takes another moment for you to recognise him as the lanky salutatorian. There’s no doubt Mac has grown to be really handsome, but you hope he still has those nerdy qualities that made him stand out in high school. You also hope Bozer’s still around (it was hard not to notice the bubbly persona standing next to your high school crush).
It feels weird. You've missed years of each other's life, but one shy look in his eyes guarantees you that it's not going to be long before you're falling head over heels in love with him again.
“Hi, I'm Jamie. You're Angus MacGyver, right?” you ask, but it's only out of courtesy. Of course you remember Mac. He's the scrawny kid who incinerated a moped, and that's just something you can't forget. However, you're not sure he remembers you (but oh boy, does he).
“Yeah. Call me Mac though, never liked the name Angus. You're the valedictorian with the bright red hair?”
“I am,” you admit, smiling coyly. You're somehow glad he still remembers you.
“Graduated at 16, five years at med school, worked in UCLA for four years?”
“Nope, UCSF for three, UCLA for one. You graduated at 17, MIT for three—no two years, EOD for three, then DXS?” you shoot back.
“Yup. You looked into my file, didn't you?”
Tumblr media
Turns out, your services are very much required, to Mac's spite. During a particularly hectic mission, in which they have to improvise an operation on Ralph, the so-called accountant of an organisation named D-77, you're called in a hurry.
“Mac. Please tell me you're calling because you want to say hello, and not because there's currently an unconscious accountant lying in the trunk after he got shot?”
“I'm so sorry Doc, but we need you. Now.”
A normal person in a normal situation would probably panic, but, since this isn't a normal situation, and you are, by all means, not just a normal person, you try to quickly compose yourself, before giving Mac the necessary instructions.
Mac thanks you afterwards, when he gets back home. More specifically, with a hug (both of you will, if asked, deny that the hug lasts a little too long, that Mac's hand is a little too low on your back to be strictly platonic, and that the sexual tension is suffocating in such a small room).
Tumblr media
For safety reasons, Bozer decides that, after finally obtaining Riley's entire phone number, Mac should have yours. Obviously, just in case something happens.
Over the next couple of weeks, the both of you share cute anecdotes, discuss 'sciencey things (as Jack calls it)', and of course you ask him about his physical health after tough missions. Mac spends a lot more time talking to you, and although Jack tends to complain a little about him not living in the present, the older man is secretly a little happy to see Mac having a stable relationship with a woman again, after Nikki.
Nikki however, in her glorious red glow, re-enters everyone's lives rather quickly. Only this time, she's one of the good guys again. As expected, Mac's inclined to believe Nikki, and give her a second chance. Jack shakes his head in disappointment when she returns; yes, he'd be happy for Mac in any other given situation, but this is Nikki. Even if she's working for the CIA, she's betrayed and confused his teammate more than he really needs to be confused and betrayed. He just hoped she'd be gone for longer than this.
Mac lets Nikki kiss him again, whilst patching up her wound. He really wants to believe her words, love her like he used to. He just can't. Not anymore. So he kisses her back, thinking that maybe, maybe, he can learn to love her shade of red again.
Nikki gets framed and arrested by Patricia, and for a brief moment, she looks back. She wants to scream at Mac, wants to tell him none of this is true. He'll figure it out on his own though, but she shivers at the look of betrayal in his eyes. Again. So when Patricia Thornton's lies are discovered, she smiles, almost laughs. No more lies.
She kisses Mac again, when it's all over. Her lust and the heat of the moment made her forget back then, but she feels it now. Through his kiss, she knows she's lost him.
Nikki promises Mac that they'll take it one step at a time. They both know they won't.
She steps out of the room and her eyes meet yours. As Nikki walks down the corridor, she pats your shoulder.
“He's all yours,” she murmurs, ignoring the slight blush on your cheeks. She's a fighter, but a fight against Eros is a fight long lost.
Tumblr media
It takes another two years, 78 missions, 1502 text messages and seven experimental dates (and by experimental, I mean experimenting in the love department, as well as blowing things up in the name of science, because, well, nerds), but you get there eventually.
On the night of the fourth of January, 2018, you two lie on Mac's DIY self-heating mat, watching the meteor shower. Mac's arm is wrapped around you while you're cuddling, head on his chest.
“You know, Nikki told me something, back when Thornton was arrested. She said: ‘He's all yours.’ I wonder if she knew that this would happen,” you say.
“I think everyone knew, at least before we did.”
“We're stupid, aren't we? We've known each other since high school, and yet we don't realise we love each other until we're both adults!” you laugh. Mac turns to look at you for a moment, before capturing the moment, and you, in a sweet, breathtaking kiss. His soft lips touch yours gently as he goes in for another one, and then another one. He moves slowly, as if you were the most fragile, precious thing in the entire world. As if you were his world. You are.
“What was that for?” you ask him, still panting slightly. Mac only smiles. Oh, how he loves the Red of your lips, your hair, your cheeks. Oh, how he loves you.
“Making up for lost time, sweetheart.”
Aight people!
It took me a while, but I finished it! I think MacGyver isn't the most popular TV show out there, but I like it. So, if you do read it, tell me what you think of it! Send me comments, asks, requests, shtuff...
Have a lovely day!

A List of Imaginary Films for Zach Woods and Thomas Middleditch To Star In
A Silicon Valley RPF fic. Again, happy birthday to @joycecarolnotes :)
*
A Harry Potter tie-in film that’s like about hipster wizards in Williamsburg - Zach plays a Hufflepuff from an old wizarding family whose attempts at fitting into muggle society have uneven results. Thomas plays a muggleborn Slytherin.
A romcom set in the cutthroat world of online comics. Thomas and Zach play illustrators who, one night at the Toronto Comic Arts Festival, play a game of gay chicken that goes WAY too far.
A heist movie in which Thomas plays a guy hired to steal… something… and Zach is his handler. They’re hired separately and they’ve never met; the movie has a whole Who Is On Whose Side thing; 90% of their dialogue happens over the comm.
An indie office comedy in which Zach and Thomas plays two guys who work for the same company in the same location but their cubicles are on completely opposite sides of the building. They only know each othet from inter-departmental phone calls in which they have longer and longer conversations. They stealthily - so their supervisors can't tell - have bits of conversation about non-work-related things, but they're both too shy to try to match faces to voices. They both keep meaning to ask the other where his cubicle is but then they always chicken out. Then there’s a zombie apocalypse and they meet while outrunning zombies and saving the day.
An modern-day adaptation of Maurice in which Thomas plays Clive Durham and Zach plays Maurice. No idea who would play Alec Scudder.
An erotic thriller set in the world of classical music. Zach has just won the audition for the opening in the trumpet section of the Los Angeles Philharmonic; Thomas is the histrionic who cannot take Zach’s doe eyea staring out at him from the back of the orchestra every day. There is a whole thing where they argue about the phrasing for the start of Mahler’s fifth and Thomas’s character gets an erection when Zach finally plays it his way. At one point they go on tour - Zach’s first tour - and there are slow, evocative shots of him carrying his stuff in city after city, and of Thomas watching him when he thinks no one can see. In one scene, Zach is standing in the rain, smiling up at a rainbow that’s just appeared in the distance, as Thomas stands behind him, looking distraught.
An art-house sci-fi film in which Zach plays a scientist aboard a spaceship and Thomas is a member of the support crew who may or may not be a robot. Questions about identify, life, and human-cyborg sex are all… not really answered in this film, but there are lots of gentle, thoughtful, artistically pleasing shots of both actors set to ukulele music.
An adaptation of volume two of Robertson Davies’s The Cornish Trilogy, ‘What’s Bred in the Bone’ in which Zach plays the young Francis Cornish. Screw Thomas, he doesn’t need to be in this.
A film in which Thomas is a supervillain and Zach a writing a sociology phd about him.
A teen movie that’s not actually a teen movie in which Zach and Thomas play high school teachers who chat (read: gossip) about their students in the staff room every day, until they start talking about their own adolescences, end up hanging out after school, and then - after hijinks and after one of their students writes a play about them, also there’s a musical number - they fall in love.
A Ralph Waldo Emerson biopic with Zach as the esteemed essayist/lecturer/poet and Thomas as his neighbour, Bronson Alcott. No idea who plays Bronson Alcott’s daughter, Louisa May, or their other neighbours, Hawthorne and Thoreau.
A remake of Some Like It Hot with Middleditch in the Jack Lemon role, Zach Woods playing Tony Curtis’s character, and Rihanna as Marilyn Monroe. This film becomes particularly popular because of its blooper reel, in which Zach and Middleditch are arguably funnier than in the actual movie, and on top of that, they seem incredibly happy to be together.
A movie in which they’re happy.

so basically there's this quote in i think chapter 1? idk it's been a while when ralph and jack first meet that describes the two of them smiling at each other in shy liking. now this post has stuck with me for a while now bc a. look in the 'jalph' tag and tell me what you see, b. i just really like the wording, and c. it's like a vocal stim for my brain. anyways there's this girl in my emr class who i might be a little in love with but idk bc i tend to fall in fleeting love with half the girls i meet and i might just be obsessed with the idea of her bc we don't know each other that well tbh but also usually my fleeting obsessions don't last that long but we sat next to each other throughout all of intro to piano last semester and i thought she was pretty even though we'd never talked once but kept making eye contact. but as i was saying sometimes when we leave the classroom at the same time we walk towards our next classes together but on friday i realized that actually it was just days where i left after she did bc she had waited for me at the door (and i suddenly felt bad about all the times i had rushed out, not bc of like. guilt or anything. just the fact that i missed out on walking with her like an idiot) but anyway. today she beat me to the door but we didn't really have anything to talk about so we walked in silence, but the entire time i kept glancing at her and i saw her glancing at me a lot too and idk if she saw me bc i had fallen a couple steps behind bc of hall traffic but ever since i've had those two goddamned words rattling around in my brain.
dear lord help me i've applied a lord of the flies quote to my actual real life

some liberty was taken in rating fics that are not rated
might update in the future; if i missed something, i’ll be happy to read your rec!
au
the world forgetting by the world forgot by achilleees  ★ - mature | short | eternal sunshine of the spotless mind au | angst | infidelity | my god it hurts, but in such a good way
Kent pressed his fingers into his eyes until his vision swam for reasons other than the salty tears welling up in them. “Are you seriously asking me to fly across the goddamn country to hold your hand while you cut me out of your life?” me: you know what this fandom needs? me: an eternal sunshine au me: only without the happy ending
I’ve Been Closing My Eyes by perfectpro  ★ - teen | long | inception au | angst | you don't understand how much love i have for this fic. SO MUCH LVOE
Jack Zimmermann? You worked with him and Kent Parson together? What happened?” Bitty asks before he can help himself.
Everyone’s heard the stories. Parse and Zimms, taking the world of dream share by storm, trained by Dominic Cobb himself. Ten years later, no one’s heard from either in two years.
Shrugging his shoulders, Shitty tries to think of how to phrase it. “No one comes out of Limbo the same.”
lavender, rose quartz, and thyme by megancrtr - mature | medium | magical realism | magical kent au | fluff and angst | found family
Kent knew about superstitions before he made it to hockey. He knew about black cats and broken mirrors. About stepping on cracks and throwing pinches of salt over his shoulder. Kent knew about magic before he found hockey.
Let the Current Carry Us by perfectpro - mature | long | magical realism | cursed!kent au | a classic j/p sad story ™ but with magic | i'm holding out for a happier sequel tbh
Jack hums and smiles, but otherwise doesn’t respond. They sit in silence, and he bites his tongue to keep from saying anything. There is no sense disrupting this fragile peace that they have.
Here is the deal he has made with himself: Jack is forbidden, until after the curse of the seventeenth summer. Kent does not want to do anything to let the gods know how they could hurt him the worst.
why do we fall? by sparklyslug - teen | short | touch telepath! jack au | epikegster | angst
“Didja miss me?” Kent had asked / looking strong/ look good/ looking happy/I could stand here all night and all day and just look at you/ and Jack’s control had crumbled, jerked him out of step with time and out into the swirling minds of the college kids filling their house, his consciousness sent running by the brightness in his own chest.
Dog Tags by MisconductandMimosas - gen | short | military au | fluff | established relationship |  further reading to be found in the author's tag for this fic | i adore this 'verse to bits
Corporal Kenny,” Jack huffed into Kent’s ear. The arms around his waist tightened.
“Captain Jack,” Kent teased right back. “You outrank me, Zimms.”
The Daily Grind by JaneJHills -  mature | long | abandoned wip | the coffeeshop au that was foretold
It’s not that Jack wasn’t into relationships; it’s just that Jack wasn’t a relationships kind of guy.
maybe i’m falling for you by madameofmusic - teen | short | coffeeshop au | this is really cute <3 i too lament the lack of more cutesy coffeeshop aus from this ship. this one’s great tho
Jack’s normal coffee shop relocates, and he’s forced to start buying from the cat-themed coffee shop down the street, Catppuccino. It’s cheesy as hell, but the coffee’s good, and the "purrista” better. Jack doesn’t miss the old shop.
among all the millions and millions of stars by achilleees - teen | short | florist!jack | flower shop au| fluff | pining
“Shush,” Kent says. “What have you got that says, like, thanks for not judging me when I get wasted on Moscato and pass out on your couch, and also sorry about that? Hypothetically.”
“Hypothetically,” says the florist, lips quirking, “I’d recommend either white tulips or blue hyacinths.”
Even the plainest of the plain shall deign to reign (and boy, you're reigning over me) by exbex - gen | short | high school au | chubby!jack | kent pining over shy jack is cute, yes
Lardo looks at Kent with the most knowing look he’s ever seen aside from his own mother’s. “Kent,” she finally replies, “I like you Bro. So I’m going to give you the following information. Information, which, I assure you, is publicly available. Jack, who transferred in weeks ago, Oh Unobservant One, knows me through GSA. Jack is not straight. Jack likes hockey, among other things. And that is all the emotional labor that I am doing for free.”
like a queen with her king by achilleees - teen | short | genderswap | girl!jack | high school au | misunderstanding | love the followup to this, found here + here
Shitty found Kent on the porch. “Saw your girl here,” he said. “Can’t believe you actually got her to come to a party.”
“She’s not my girl,” said Kent, trying not to blush.
“She should be,” Shitty said, smiling and leaning against the railing. “Blind man could see the way you look at her, and you’re the only person she likes at school.”
Twenty Feet Back by floatingstark - mature | short | wip | daddy!jack au as in literally-a-dad-jack
Kent is aware this is a little odd; he’s standing behind some trees on the other side of the park, pretending to stretch but actually just high-key spying on a hot dad and his kid.
i'll be your platinum by achilleees ★ - explicit | medium | sugar daddy!jack au | daddy kink | angst and fluff | this is the one daddy kink fic that made me swoon, it's the banter and the way they fall for each other slowly that takes my breath away | sorta sequels here and here | better yet, read all the entire unrelated daddykink series she wrote
Wicks took a deep breath, then let out in a rush, “So I’ve been catfishing this dude online with your pictures so he’ll buy me free stuff, only now he wants to meet in person to hand off the suit jacket I need for Ginger’s wedding tomorrow, so I need you to meet him outside the Burberry at the Copley mall tonight to pick it up for me.”
Kent couldn’t speak for a minute, because he was laughing too hard.
here in the present tense by achilleees ★ -  teen | short | soulmate au | bodyswap |
Jack isn’t really sure what he was expecting when he went to sleep on August 2.
Kind of. Or maybe he just doesn’t want to admit that he genuinely thought he’d wake up in Georgia, in those checker-patterned, sunlight-limned sheets. That he’d go downstairs and hear Suzanne Bittle bustling around in the kitchen, and greet her wearing her son’s socks and his pajamas and his sweet, bashful blush.
Dynamite Boy by TomatoBird - gen | short | wreck it ralph au | glitch!jack | the concept is genius, i’d gladly read 50k more words of this
In which Jack is simultaneously a glitch, a child of champions, and an aspiring player in Hero’s Duty, and Kent is just someone he happens to meet along the way.
Alone Among the Wreck by Christabel - explicit | short | arranged marriage au | smut | surprise non-con near the end | angst
“You don’t have to trust me,” Kent said, “you just have to let me do this.”
Jack has spent many years away from his father's court. Now he must return to wed Kent Parson at last, with all those years and hurts between them. It's not pretty.
the light of all lights by decinq - mature | short | vampires au | look, it's not endgame and has open-ended j/b ugh but i feel like every ficrec should have at least one vampire au
Jack says, “Would you rather be able to fly or have super speed.”
The corners of Kent’s mouth tug into a small smile, and he says, “Compared to you, I do have super speed.”
Jack elbows him, hard. Jack asks, “What about being able to see the future?”
end credits by Verbyna - teen | short | actors au | ambiguous ending and has background j/b | reconciliation | open-ended, but i love fics where they try to do a post-mortem of their past relationship and realize that it isn’t as final as they want it to be
Kent thinks, they’ll end the movie here.
The story, of course, goes on.
rentboy jack and his nhl star boyfriend series by achilleees - rentboy!jack | prostitution au |
so put it on me - explicit | short | pining | smut
It will be a cold day in hell before Kent has the fortitude to say no to that pout.
“Ugh,” he says. “It’s just a dumb fantasy, man, it doesn’t matter.”
Jack cocks his head at him. “I am in the business of fulfilling fantasies,” he says. or, eloquently summed up by a friend: "Ugh poor Kent is so in love"
all the hearts they're messing with - teen | short | angst and fluff | trade |
As soon as Kent gets home, he pulls out a pad of paper and a pen and makes a list of his options.
1. Tell Jack you got traded. Get dumped. Cry in your cheerios.2. Hide from Jack that you were traded. Buy out (?) the Vegas media so they don’t cover the story. Bribe NHL.com Break Jack’s laptop so he can’t read NHL.com anymore. Fly back on off-days (?). Have plan fall through because plan is dumb. Get dumped. Cry in cheerios.
but on good days - teen | short | established relationship | meet the parents | angst |
“Are you mad at me?” Kent says.
Jack meets his eyes in the mirror, gaze stormy.
“I’m just trying to get along with your parents,” says Kent. “I thought that’s why you brought me here.”
Second Chance by bittlebunny - mature | short | blind date au
“I know, I’m sorry.” Jack repeats. “It was wrong. I just didn’t know what to do, I don’t usually do that type of thing.”
“You should more often. You know you could probably get laid every night if you wanted to?”
Jack blushes and looks down into his black coffee, not quite agreeing with that sentiment.
leave this blue neighborhood. series by katarama ★ - teen, explicit | long | no bitty au | angst | non-linear narrative |  oh my god this one is so good, especially their internal monologues | it gave me MAJOR FEELINGS
This is a 16-fic series that centers around Jack and Kent and their history and their future. It follows canon, with one major difference; Bitty decided not to go to Samwell. Each fic is named after and based around a song on the Deluxe version of Troye Sivan’s album Blue Neighborhood. The first two fics are chronological, because they’re in the fic’s current time (2018) in the frame of the story. Most of the fics in the series are told through flashbacks and time jumps, though, and the stories switch back and forth between Jack and Kent’s perspectives.
pre-canon
meet you in the middle by madameofmusic - teen | short | pre-slash
Kent meets Jack Zimmermann for the first time.
In Kit We Trust by kentprsn - teen | short | fluff | getting together | first kiss | cat matchmaker au
A lot of things can happen if a cat is set loose in an ice rink; Kent never thought this would be one of them.
Or: “I may have brought my pet to the rink by accident and it may have escaped you have to help me.” AU
it’s too close for comfort by achilleees - teen | short | pre-slash | cats
“Go suck your own dick,” Parse grumbled. “I’ma find the cat.” Both pairs of shoes wandered away, and Jack was almost relieved until suddenly, without warning, the high tops came back and light flooded his sanctuary as someone crouched and lifted the hem of the tablecloth.
“Hey, you,” Parse said to either Jack or the cat, he couldn’t tell.
the bluest things on earth by blazeofglory - gen | short | drabble | pre-slash
Kent Parson isn't gay, he isn't, but there's... There's something about Jack Zimmermann.
Crossing the Line by avalonjoan - gen | short | hurt/comfort | sickfic | teenage boys being nice | pre-slash
Even though they're linemates, Jack doesn't know Kent all that well. He certainly doesn't expect the American to come look after him when he's unwell on their first roadie.
Count on It by bienenalster - gen | short | pre-slash | codependency | world juniors
Specifically, in which Jack and Kent fail at playing against each other.
Generally, in which Jack and Kent fail at being reasonable human beings. Or, the lighter side of codependency.
Smoke Gets in Your Eyes by bienenalster, Pax - teen | short | pre-slash maybe | mutual enabling
Jack can appreciate a good game of beer pong in someone's basement, especially when Parse is on his team, one arm around his shoulder as he tries to get Jack to miss his shot.
(Jack never really understood how Parse can just turn it off like that. If you want to win on the ice, then you should want to win all the time. Even at stupid things, like beer pong.)
(Jack has never considered the possibility that beer pong might not be the only game Parse is playing.)
but then his hands roamed by defcontwo - teen | short | first kiss
Jack’s hand pressed into the small of Parse’s back during team meetings, where no one else can see, and Parse toppling into Jack’s lap whenever he gets drunk enough that no one will blink twice at it.
A game of chicken, or a game of chance. Jack doesn’t know which one it’s going to be just yet.
you're neck and neck or cheek to cheek by punkpadfoot - teen | short | first kiss | i'm in love with the author's style of writing, and i love the tentativeness in this fic--they're shy and hesitant; their dilemma feels true
Kent’s always been fairly affectionate, but this thing with Jack is something else entirely.
the spark in your eyes, the look on your face by oscarmild - teen | short | drabble
Jack knows that Kent is his friend- his best friend, even. But lately, it’s been starting to feel like more than just friends.
Insults for Your Lovers by SummerFrost - teen | short | inter-class | social class difference | friends to lovers

What's Better Than This? Just Guys Bein' Dudes by Bittyybee (sunlight) - mature | short | massages | first kiss | ust
Kent's shoulders hurt. Jack gives good massages.
my youth is yours. by alicejericho - teen | short | getting together | first kiss | and read the rest of the wasting my young years. series | jack is smitten by kent’s charms oh yeah
Kent spends the beginning of his summer with hockey prodigy/best friend Jack Zimmermann because they're young and they can and Kent likes getting free things.
girls like girls by Elliotalderson - explicit | short | genderswap au | first time | girl!jack | girl!kent | smut | i need more of this stat
"I know how you get all psycho near a game, don't worry. Just uh- maybe find a healthy way to release that frustration." Kate suggested as she turned and winked at Jacq. "Y'know what I mean?"
"Not hockey?" Jacq asked confused.
"Not hockey." Kate repeated, meeting Jacqs eyes.

This is what Jack lives for: The second he touches down on the ice, his mind clears. For sixty minutes, he is nothing but a blank slate, a white board that fills itself up with plays and tactics, a steady hand on the stick and a heart that beats for nothing else.
hand in unlovable hand by procrastibaker - teen | short | pining | getting together | sad boys trying to figure their shit out |
So he sits next to Jack on roadies, bumping their shoulders together amicably as Jack chews on his lip and stares out the window at the passing scenery. He leans into every casual touch - Jack’s gloved hand on his back, their skates knocking together on the bench. Seeks him out on the ice, feeling a thrill when their passes connect effortlessly; slams him into the boards after game-winning goals, their teammates piling up around them but it’s Kent’s fist clutching the back of Jack’s jersey, Kent’s voice yelling in Jack’s ear.
If Jack notices, he doesn’t say anything.
Kent still hopes.

The sales pitch is irrelevant: this moment right here, sitting in the front of Kent’s piece of shit pickup truck, listening to “Party in the USA” on the radio at top volume – that’s all the convincing Jack ever needed.
Or: Kent and Jack, a carnival, and the last gasp of the 34 days.

Kent likes to have his fun, likes to mess with people, but there's something about messing with Jack that's just so deeply satisfying for him. He can poke and poke and he'll get a reaction every single time. No matter what, no matter how blatant Kent gets or how he pushes it, he'll get that same wide-eyed disbelieving stare, that same red blush staining Jack's cheeks.

Jack’s dad and Kent really get along great. Which isn’t a surprise, they’re basically the same sort of person--outgoing, funny, always ready with a story or joke--so when Kent comes out to dinner with Jack and his family, it’s basically those two monopolizing the conversation for the entire meal.
