Imagine:

You weren't feeling so well and you're sitting down by shang's island shoreline. You often come down to the beach to meditate or think. But usually you're accompanied by a guard or by shang,your lover, himself. But this time,you're alone. All with your thoughts,they ate at you. Doubt spilled into your mind as tears fell. Why must your brain hate you?

Shang was worried when he didn't see you come into the bed chambers you both shared. Usually you're not out this late. Let alone,outside the main palace. Perhaps you're at the private teahouse? Shang wondered.

*(To put perspective,i hc shang's main palace keep,where he lives and is the living quarters for him,his lover and his personal guards,warriors and servents. All of the others usually stay in a separate area and smaller buildings near the dock port. The palace gardens lead to a pathway leading down a staircase behind the main keep,where a beachside tea house is,shang uses this teahouse as a personal one. Instead of the ones used by kombatants during tournaments. This teahouse is secluded,quiet,and peaceful. It is a mix between Japanese,and Chinese architecture. The reason being is him and raiden often do business when discussing anything related to tournaments. Despite being rivals and sort of enemies. They are respectful of one another and often discuss things as would any master of the martial arts would or even as an emperor or lords of their respective domains. In short. They aint always barking at each others throats,so to have them in petty squabbles all the time is boring and pointless. Anyways. You often might come to this teahouse to get away so to speak.)*

Shang tsung got on his silk red robe. A garment that was decorated by images of dragons and Phoenixes. Etched in gold and yellow. The flame patterns danced along with shades of deep purple and indigo at its base. A fine clothing fit for a man such as he. Simple black slippers he wore as he stepped out the doors to the bed chambers. Into the garden. He followed the stone path through the gardens,enveloped in moonlight. It danced through the trees. The warm summer air,not too hot surprisingly despite being an island. But there had been rain recently,so it was much cooler,but not by much. There was sweet smells of flowers. Tropical hibiscus,Asian lilies,and little lotuses in the pond all filled the night air. Soft sounds of crickets,frogs and other nighttime summer creatures also sang. As shang tsung made his way to the staircase,he heard soft whimpers from below,at the bottom. He swiftly but carefully descended the stairs. As he got closer. He saw you on a large rock. Weeping. The rock was adjacent to the teahouse. He carefully approached you.

"My dear? What are these tears? Why are you out here by yourself this late in the hour? Is something wrong?"

Shang asked softly but in a concerned manner.

As you struggle to make eye contact. And in a small cracked voiced stated

"I just don't understand why you love me? Why would you choose to spare me? I'm not the best warrior,even with your training. I'm constantly worried,i second guess myself,I'm a mess,im not as beautiful/handsome as some people,im just so...meh,i feel like I'm not worthy of anything even kindness. I just don't get it. Besides you could find better I'm sure,a better person than boring,average me."

You lay your head back down on your crossed arms,over your legs you propped them upon. Still crying.

Shang was taken aback. Where did this come from?! His beloved? Doubtful of his love? Who would dare put those thoughts into your head!? But shang tsung thought about it. Perhaps it is not of another,but of a troubled mind. One filled with the anxieties and stresses and struggles of life itself. He walked over to you,first removing the slippers as not to track sand. Barefoot he walked on the warm sand. When he got to you he placed his hand under your head,lifted your chin with his fingers and spoke with the most earnest,soft,and loving voice.

"My dear sweet y/n. Why did i spare you? Simply because i chose to,i could have killed you,taken your soul,and that would be it. But i didn't. But in that choosing i found one of the most kindest of souls. A soul so genuine and true. And you never once tried to be anything but what you are. Your training has served you well,as you are alive aren't you? *chuckles* obviously the woes of kpmbat has not forsaken you yet? Why? Because you're warrior spirit isn't one of physical prowess. It is not of duty of honor. It is simply love. And love is the most powerful energy of all. Love for life,love for being,and the perseverance of it despite of the world around you. You study hard,love hard,and even play hard. You have the soul of a champion,regardless of frivolous titles given by gods. You are a beautiful soul. Inside and out. You worry of others before yourself,you always put others before you. Even when it's hard to. You stuck at my side,even when You had every right to leave. But here,you remain. I'm obviously doing something right my dear. I know that the dark clouds of your mind get to you,but they too will pass. And that beautiful bright glow from you will shine once again. You couldn't help but giggle at that,he always knew exactly what to say.

Shang continues as he sits beside you,comforting you the best way that he could.

"My darling,i simply adore you,all of you. Even the messy parts as you said. Hell I'm messy myself, *chuckles* I'm a sorcerer of soul magic and dark arts after all. But even a devil such as i can appreciate a flower that blooms in adversity. It is the most beautiful,and the most colorful and bright. And no matter what your mind may tell you,your soul never lies. Just as you have been there for me,i will be there for you. And you are deserving just as much as any other. Even more so as I'm concerned. And you are already worthy. Words fail me to truly encapsulate how my heart feels for you. But what i adore the most is your company,simply put. I admire your presence,your existence is enough. But i prefer it more when you're filled with innocent wonder,joyful laughter,and full of life and love. A hunger for knowledge and a pursuit for purpose. Your strive for perfection isn't the way. Shang tsung then placed his hand upon your cheek,and kissed you passionately. With all the yearning and intensity that ached in his heart to soothe the storm in yours.

All melted away,no more worry,all doubt ceased. All that was. Was you and him. The sounds of the ocean waves crashing softly,the crickets nearby the paths end. All was calm. Your tears of sorrow turned to tears of joy. How silly you felt for doubting your lover shang,let alone yourself.

Of course he loved you. And he loved you in his own way. As did you.

You both sat and talked a few more hours in the teahouse over some tea. Laughing at old stories,on occasion making flirtatious comments,thus leading into a spicier moment. And you both fell asleep soundly in the teahouse.

By morning you awoke to being wrapped only in shangs silk robe.

He with just his silken pants and hair pulled back. Sat at the opening,doors slid open. The warm summer sun outside,hot but ocean air came through the teahouse so it was cool enough.

You just sat there admiring the view. Of both your lover,and the sea. You went over to sit next to him. And layed you head on his shoulder.

He kissed your forehead. And as you both gazed at the ocean. All of your troubles were gone,you were ready to take on anything the day offered you.

Shang helped make you stand proud and firm in who you are. And for shang? Well you get to see his softer side,not many get that chance. How lucky are you?

This was highly self indulgent. Sorry if it's longer than what i originally planned. But i got so sucked in as i was writing it.

Again no matter if others also self ship with shang, i know that my self ship is unique. And i gotta remind myself that and not be discouraged by this. And i love writing for him. And even if its very self indulgent.

I shouldn't be afraid to post my work. Even if one person likes it. Even if it gets zero recognition. I created something,and i need to remind myself. This is how i grow. Both as an artist and person. Those that matter don't mind,and those that mind dont matter,so to speak. And im glad that people do like my work. Even if its super self indulgent and specific at times.

So I watched first two episodes of the Amazon Prime series they made of the yakuza series and I have some thoughts;

I feel like lot of people already had not so great expectations of it upon learning how it differs from the source material (can you really blame them when it comes to the adaptions based on videogames though?), I actually like it so far, but I can't but wonder if this was necessary?

Like I haven't watched many Yakuza movies so I can't comment on how unique or interesting of the plot is compared to your usual Japanese gangster movies, but like I wish we could get something else for a change. Don't get me wrong, I love Kiryu and his story, how it starts and his relationship with Nishkiyama, Haruka and the Yakuza itself but if you're making a series based on the games' characters, why not choose the ones we didn't get to see that much? I would love to see how Kazama got where he is or Sera, hell, show me young Kazama and Kashiwagi, how he got his scar and their struggles with climbing up the ladder! Even the people who played the games wouldn't be familiar with the story, it would he brand new and so both new comers and already existing fans could dive into it.

That been said I do really like how Nishki and Kiryu become Yakuza to pay off the debt, Kazama seems like a better dad figure here since he seems like he's actually trying to shield them from joining the organisation. It's been a while since I played Yakuza 0 but from what I remember he kinda resists but let's them in the family anyway like... did you try ?? Girlypop wtf they are dumb young people, ofcourse they are going to glamourise that sort of thing.

In the first episode I feel like I could barely see what was going on in the heist scene but other than that I think the sets are really cool, lots of blood and punching sounds very cool. 👍 The fight after Kiryu gets out of the prison seems but rehearsed (so nice of them to wait for Kiryu to finish beating up their friend before they attack lol) but then again I'm not fight choreographer so, maybe it was actually good and I just don't understand it lol

I really like the idea of Yumi and Miho joining them in Kamurocho, since my biggest gripe in the games were that we are kinda just told that Yumi is Kiryus true love but we never see girlie do anything. I'm sorry it's hard to care for her because we never get to see their relationship properly, I don't know this girl??? They are in love with her I guess cool. So I hope we get to see them in the upcoming episodes 🙏

I also liked them having their little messy home together, it really feels like it's their little taste of freedom before things go south for them.

I wish they had casted someone properly smelly looking middle aged man to play Date, he kinda got yassified imo.

When they mentioned Majima and Taiga I just went "!!!", I would love seeing Saejima somewhere else than just prison. But I wonder how it will affect Majima as a character, since one thing that made him truly tragic is that he had lost everything... But obviously if Taiga is here, then how did things end up going in this version of the story? Now I'm realising I didnt look properly whether Majima has two eyes in the Amazon Prime series but if he doesn't, how would he lose his other eye in this version..?

I like that they didn't just delete Haruka. I hope they handle her well.

the weirdness and unconventionality of lawbepo are major charm points to me tbh!💕 i also really love how lawbepo elevates law’s character! it’s not that i didn’t like law before, but to be honest, i feel that a weakness of the character is that he is easily put into the “stoic badass with a tragic past and a secret heart of gold” stereotype. which is cool and fun, and it’s obviously a popular trope for a reason, but every anime/manga has this type of character tbh, and if nothing more is done with them, they can be kinda generic and one note. and it’s especially hard if the character is a side character, so it’s unlikely the creator will spend more time with them. unless it’s like for fanservice or something. so i like these types of characters but i don’t usually love them because of that.

that was how i used to feel about law, i liked him and thought his design was cool but that’s it. but everything is different now- like maybe it sounds insane to say, but considering “what if that bear is not just law’s vice captain, but also his first love from childhood? his babygirl? his ride-or-die wife?” has seriously like opened my third eye when it comes to law tbh lol, and i have you and your incredible art to thank for that! 🙏❤️‍🔥💕💯🔥✨

THEY REALLY HAD HIS NUMBER i meanwhile needed more convincing cuz im too canonfaggy to live off of Just the intro and the hug (all we had at the point where i got into op first) yes the hug was monumental and parially made up for the PH and DR lack of Bepo and having to tolerate the stupidity and insult of "law is gonna join SH/law is a honorary SH" no he wont, is not. die????

anyway yes it took me more fanservice to be like oh So we really ARE putting Law's softness for Bepo as one of the core characteristics? Not just a passing occasional thing like the hug was? Okay. BRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

childhood: dasom was born in manhattan, new york to a record producer father and vocal coach / former broadway star mother, so music has always been apart of her life. she's the eldest of three children, two girls including herself and a younger brother. she spent her childhood in elite private schools and being vocally trained by her own mother. when she reached the age of twelve, she was scouted by a korean music label that wanted her to be a trainee for them. with her parents' support, she moved to south korea at the age of thirteen and started training. while living in seoul, she stayed with her mother's parents until moving into the idol dorms.

adolescence: dasom debuted at the young, ripe age of fifteen; though she wasn't the youngest in her group. despite her young age, she was one of two main vocalists, apart of the group's dance line, and the center/face of the group. her group quickly gained success and notoriety, not just in south korea, but in asia as a whole ( think girls' generation type vibes ), and with their rising popularity, dasom's personal popularity with the general public grew even more. by the time she was seventeen, her face was plastered on billboards in both south korea and japan ( the country with their second largest fanbase ). but with her popularity, came a lot of hate and negativity as well. there's never any good without bad, and she was experiencing that firsthand.

early twenties: her group was at the height of their career, and then it all went to shit when dasom was twenty years old. she went through a pretty rough break up with her first significant other, and in their anger, they leaked nude photos of her to netizens and the scandal took south korea by a storm. she went from being a national sweetheart to public enemy number one. and the worst part about it was that she was being blamed for it, and her ex didn't get nearly as much hate as she did. although they weren't in the public eye as much as her, they were still known because they were apart of an extremely wealthy family. she just assumed that their wealth and family's influence helped them get off scot-free. meanwhile, her career as a k-pop idol was practically ruined. her company dropped her before the group could suffer anymore than it already had, leaving her jobless.

but she was still determined to continue making music, despite being virtually blacklisted in the k-pop industry. she hopped on a plane back to the states and used connections through her parents in order to secure herself a record deal. on her twenty first birthday the following year in 2015, she released her first solo album. that was also the year that she began her acting career. although she doesn't dabble in it too much, it is something that she enjoys doing every so often.

HELL YEAH.. i honestly am not a huge fan of the wci arc. i really disliked it the first time i read it but i think there r a lot of things that contributed to that. i couldn't remember a lot of the story from before, i started it in the anime and then switched over to manga at some point so it was a bit of a jarring difference, i have complicated feelings about sanji, and i was really sleep deprived when i was reading it. it was super difficult to get through cuz it just felt like everything dragged on and on.. so when i was rereading i was really dreading coming back to that arc and having to slog through it again. but actually it wasn't that bad. its still nowhere near being a favorite for me, but it does have a lot of good moments. anyways i think u will have a much better time than me and im looking forward to seeing ur reactions!! and i defintely see the post-timeskip haters points sometimes. there’s less time spent with the characters just. getting to interact and chill- partially bc the anime doesnt really do filler now but also partially bc now the crew is so large that oda never writes them all in one place. theyre always splitting up. and also the obvious things like robin getting sidelines and her design change, zoro is less silly, overall there’s less lightheartedness (although at times i can appreciate that). but the thing that bothers me most is it feels like oda got more brave with the off color jokes and sexualization and such. it was there pre timeskip (esp starting around thriller bark) but post timeskip its just like. sexualization and perv jokes are turned up to 200%. and yea im bitter bc sanji got worse in that aspect (although i actually prefer his post timeskip design! i like his stupid little goatee and his new suits/outfits are very nice! and his character development has obviously. gotten some spotlight) but damn if they couldnt give that to some of the other crew members too! though i digress. and ur right- the arcs and story HAVE improved and been super epic!

Im an uber driver. One time a passenger asked me if I was afraid of picking up a serial killer. I said "what are the odds of 2 serial killers being in one UBER?" He laughed, I laughed, we watched each other through the rear view mirror the rest of the ride.

i usually don't have anything in mind when i tag with a ship it's more ~vibes~ i get that make me think of a ship for a specific interaction but i will try to press my brain juices to developp this one a little.

[i'm finishing this at 1am on a sunday night before work so be warned about possible dumbassery. they go fast (and furious) because i don't wanna spend the next century on it. also very unrealistic things because i don't care also i'm not a serial killer and don't know all the logistics behind it and don't want to know. uwufication of serial killers. i mean, it's me, if it's not a little crackish is it really something made by my brain juices? i do not approve of the killing of real people tho. (putting this here just in case) fictional people is ok (depending who when how).]

so obviously it's an au but i'm gonna keep victor as a figure skater. yuuri had to stop figure skating just before entering senior competition after an injury and told everybody he didn't want to hear anything about it ever again and found a job as a taxi driver. yuuri is sometimes hired to drive important people around because he's discreet and a safe driver.

one day, yuuri is called to get someone at the airport.

it's victor.

yuuri obviously recognizes him. because he's still very much a victor nikiforov fan. and still very much follows figure skating. but he says nothing and just starts driving after usual work related small talk.

victor is a little bit curious about the very silent japanese man who picked him up from the airport. (he said his name was yuuri). he's so used to be recognized everywhere at this point that someone not reacting to him at all is catching his attention. doesn't hurt that yuuri is also very pretty.

-you don't care about who your clients are don't you? asks victor, a finger on his mouth.

-why should i? (yuuri's grip on the wheel gets a little tighter but that's between him and his car.)

yuuri has a very nice voice, very gentle.

-aren't you afraid of picking up a serial killer?

yuuri startles a little. victor sounded genuinely curious so yuuri keeps his voice casual and goes for a 'joke':

-what are the odds of two serial killers being in one uber?

victor can't help but laugh and is rewarded by yuuri's chuckle. still. that was a little weird. right? victor can't help but get tense. and horny. he stays silent, looking at yuuri.

yuuri starts to get anxious, can't stop looking at the rear view mirror. and every time he does, victor is already looking at him.

-don't you know who i am? asks victor after long minutes of silence.

-i know your name and your job, yuuri's eyes meet victor's before going back to the road, but to say i know who you are is a little bit of a reach.

there's a breath of silence and that's just enough for victor to make a choice.

-would you like to know me better?

victor can already hear yakov from the future screaming in the distance. but should he really care when yuuri says yes with such an intensity in his eyes and voice that it makes victor's body shiver in anticipation.

the rest of the drive is silent, yuuri only focusing on the road but victor can't help smiling looking at yuuri's red ears from his back seat.

victor is already opening a bottle of champagne when he hears the soft click of his hotel room locking behind yuuri.

victor smiles at yuuri as he approaches.

-it was an accident the first time you killed someone right?

victor almost drops the bottle.

-how...

victor looks at yuuri. really looks at yuuri. it's still the same man but he's holding himself slightly differently and there's something a little dangerous in his eyes. victor inhales sharply.

-you! it's you!!! right?!

yuuri lowers his head with a shy smile and that's all the confirmation victor needs.

-i've always wondered who it was who copied me so perfectly...and it's you.

victor can't stop the awe in his voice. the smile yuuri directs at him is so bright and full of admiration? understanding?...love? victor feels like crying.

-how did you know?

yuuri shrugs.

-i wasn't sure at first, i just noticed that your skating had changed. you just seemed more free on the ice. and i was curious about the reason so i spent some time researching and then more people died and i just...realized.

victor can't believe this man.

-why did you start doing it too?

-i just wanted to help you. give you an alibi or two.

victor can't help but laugh.

-i-...really??

yuuri just shrugs again.

-what can i say? i'm a fan of all of your work and it would be a shame to put you in a jail.

victor shakes his head in disbelief. this man...

-i guess i'll have to give you a proper thank you then, but come sit and talk with me first.

victor serves them both a cup of champagne while yuuri takes a sit next to him.

-so tell me yuuri, do you like dogs?

-i don't like dogs victor, i love them.

victor is gonna marry him.

technically theyre two subunits, Adam and Eve, and they combine to create Eden. Eve is the two on the left, while Adam is the two on the right. I'm not gonna mention the characters but oh my goddd they sure are! characters! Eden was the antagonists for the second half of the anime. Their songs are kinda more rocky and very risque which is funny considering the biblical allegories

Rest of 2021 Watch List

With only six and a half months left of 2021, it’s time to get serious about my drama watching habits. I’m so behind and there are several things that are (supposed to be) coming out in the later part of the year. So, here is my list of things that I want to start/am interested in. Granted, some of these things may change as more information comes out about them. Or I may just decide not to watch them. And some may get pushed back into 2022. 

Already Aired:

Lucifer: season 5b (USA) - Though the first half of season five left us on a cliffhanger, I just cannot seem to sit myself down to finish out the season. It may be the mixed reactions of long time fans or the knowledge that season six is the last, either way, I’m having a hard time getting back into the show. 

Youth of May: (South Korea) - This romantic, moody, slice-of-life drama. I was waiting for it.The ending is going to break my heart, so I have to be ready for it. I hear the preformances are amazing, but I know I’ll be crying. 

Word of Honor: (China) - Everything I’ve heard about this drama makes it sound amazing. And while I know things will be heartbreaking - I just need to prepare. 

Currently Airing:

Doom at Your Service: (South Korea) - I watched the first four episodes (I think?), but I am waiting to binge it after it ends. Why? The first few episodes were so good, I want to be able to watch it all at once. 

The Penthouse: War in Life, Season 3: (South Korea) - I was super excited for this one...then I heard about Logan’s “brother” and, uh...maybe I’ll just watch the clips of my favorites?

Mad for Each Other: (South Korea) - I know very little about this drama, but it looks amazing and I’m hearing good things. 

Mine: (South Korea) - So, it sounds like two daughter-in-laws of a rich family work together to get what they want. It looks good.

My Roomate is a Gumiho: (South Korea) - It just looks fluffy and adorable. And I need that.

June:

Ancient Love Poetry: (China) - It just sounds sweet and sad and I love a good Chinese drama that will make me smile and eat up the angst.

Nevertheless: (South Korea) - Honestly? The Netflix trailer looked interesting. 

July:

The New Version of the Condor Heroes: (China) - I love this story and the 2014 one was a hotmess. The promo pictures look good, though they were released in 2018. Rumor is the drama has been shelved, but we’ll see what happens. 

The Devil Judge: (South Korea) - You have Ji Sung staring in a dystopian drama, where he is the as the head judge of the highest court in the land. The court has become a TV reality show, with viewers invited to participate in a live. The one person looking to take him down is Kim Min Jung as the director of a corporate social responsibility foundation. And then you have two childhood friends: Park Jin Young and Park Gyu Young, idealist who want to make their world better. I look forward to Ji Sung and Kim Min Jung battling it out, and maybe corrupting the idealist cop and younger judge.

Boku no Satsui ga Koi wo Shita: (Japan) - This one may not ever get English subtitles, as Japanese dramas aren’t really subbed anymore...however, the story sounds amazing. A young man finds out his dead foster-father was a professional killer and this young man decides to take up the “family business” to avenge for the father.  The young man approaches a womanwho is his assassination target. Despite his skill as a hitman, he can’t ever kill her, not matter how hard he tries. Instead, he ends up protecting her and the two fall  in love. This could go so many places and I want to see it.

August:

Red Sky: (South Korea) - A beautiful and genius painter meets a blind officer in charge of astronomy, geography, art of divination, and meteorology. The two fall in love. And it’s marked as a “historical romantic fantasy”? Yes, please! 

October:

The Red-Stained Sleeve Cuff: (South Korea) - The story of Sung Deok Im, a court lady.  She catches the eye of Crown Prince Lee San. Once the prince becomes king, he wants Sung Deok Im to become his concubine, but she refuses. Yet, Sung Deok Im becomes the concubine of King Jeongjo. This could be angsty. Also, it stars Lee Jun Ho (who you may remember from Just Between Lovers) and Lee Se Young (who always brings it). 

December: (or 2022...?)

Twenty-Five Twenty-One (South Korea) - The love story of two people, who have really bad-timing, told over the period of four years. Personally, I’m hoping for a poignant human drama ala Just Between Lovers or Come And Hug Me. (Minus death and murders),

Return: (South Korea) - This is literally described as: “A fantasy drama about the stories of young magicians who deal with heavenly spirits.” It will be on tvN, which usually has really solid dramas. There is a cast of talented up-and-comers: Lee Jae Wook, Arin, Park Hae Eun, and Hwang Min Hyun. There are also some talented vets in the cast: Yoo Joon Sang, Oh Na Ra, and Joo Sang Wook. It’s beingdirected by Park Joon Hwa Everything looks great on paper. It’s just - the drama will be written by the Hong Sisters. During my early days of Kdrama viewing (way back in the mid 2010s), these ladies wrote some of my favorites. And while I did love Hotel de Luna and A Korean Odyssey - it has become very clear over the years that these writers don’t do well during the second halves of their dramas and they aren’t always great at endings.

Snowdrop (South Korea) -  It takes place in 1987, and follows students at a prestigious university in Seoul. It will be written by Yoo Hyun Mi, who wrote SKY Castle and The Bridal Mask. I’m looking forward to it, even though I heard there was pushback (which has resulted in the show airdate being moved back a couple of times) from the South Korean citizens'  who believe that the drama distorts facts related to the pro-democracy movement of the 1980s in favour of the authoritarian regime. This was based on an incomplete version of the plotline that had been leaked online, which describes one character as a “spy” and another lead as working for the NSP. We’ll see

update- its extremely fun though im a little sad theres no chinese voice option. i really liked the chinese voices from genshin so its a shame theyre not here. but the english and japanese both sound good so its not a major loss. im not usually a big fan of scifi settings but i like whats happening here so far. like genshin, the music is great. so far the turn based combat is a lot more my thing. lots of similarities to genshin but i can see these systems being more appealing to me long term. ill just have to keep playing and see how it turns out

i liked genshin impact for a variety of reasons but i eventually dropped it because the real time combat system was something that became less and less enjoyable at higher levels. but im going to give honkai star rail a try since its turn based instead. i had a lot of critiques for genshin (story pacing, some elements of character design, unfriendliness for f2ps in comparison to other gachas) but there were also a lot of things i liked. so hopefully honkai star rail will fill the void genshin left but without as many of the downsides

It's really surprising that you're so well versed in older fandoms and yet participate in new popular ones (that cdrama, kpop) is this by design? Im in my twenties and my interest turnover is already way slower than it used to be

You know, that’s a really interesting question. I wouldn’t say it’s by design exactly in that I do tend to just follow what strikes my fancy, and I can’t force myself to want to write fic for just anything. (I find it easier to like reading fic without serious involuntary emotional investment, but writing takes more. Vidding I can do on command most of the time, but I don’t usually bother unless I have a lot of feels or I’m fulfilling someone’s prompt.)

However, me getting into BTS was 100% due to me wanting to understand BTS enough to explain to people who weren’t very interested but wanted to know what was going on in fandom lately. Under normal circumstances, I run the dance party at Escapade, the oldest extant slash con. We borrowed vividcon’s thing of playing fanvids on the wall--all of them set to dance music--as the soundtrack for the dance party. This means I’m creating a 3-hour mixtape of fannishness, which has amazing potential to make people feel in the know about Fandom Today... and equal potential to make them feel alienated if nothing they care about shows up. Only about 100-150 people attend the con, so it really is possible to make a playlist that feels inclusive yet informative--it just takes a huge amount of work.

Every year, I do a lot of research on which fandoms are getting big and look for vids from vidders people won’t have heard of, so there is an element of consciously trying to keep up with things. Generally, I only get into these fandoms myself if I had no idea what they were and then suddenly, oops, they’re my kryptonite, like the buddy cop android plot in Detroit: Become Human, which sucked me in hard for like 6 months on the basis of a vid.

(So if you’re into cross-fandom meta and associated stuff as one of your fannish interests, you tend to have broader knowledge of different fandoms, old and new, than if you’re just looking for the next place you’ll read fic. It’s also easier to love vids for unfamiliar things than fic.)

But though I was only looking for a basic primer on BTS, BTS has 7 members with multiple names and no clear juggernaut pairing, not to mention that AU that runs through the music videos and lots of other context to explain. The barrier to understanding WTF was going on at all was high enough that to know enough to explain, I had to be thoroughly exposed... And once I was over that hurdle, oops, I had a fandom.

In terms of old vs. new, here’s the thing: kpop fandoms in English and c-drama fandoms in English right now feel a lot like anime fandom in English did in the early 00s. I had a Buddy Cops of the 70s phase in the middle, but my current fannishness is actually a return to my older fannishness in many ways.

What do I mean about them being similar?

Yes, I know some wanker will show up to say I think China, Korea, and Japan are indistinguishable, but that’s not what I’m talking about. I’m talking about the way that I used to routinely meet Italian and French and German fans, Argentinian and Mexican, Malaysian and Indonesian and Filipino too. English-language fandom of SPN or MCU may have all those fans from all those countries, but it feels very American most of the time. English-language fandom of a non-English-language canon is more overtly about using English as a lingua franca.

It also tends to attract people who as a sideline to their fannishness are getting into language learning and translation, which are my other passion in life after fanworks fandom. (I speak only English and Spanish and a bit of Japanese, but I’ve studied German, French, Russian, Mandarin, Old English, and now Korean.)

Nerds arguing about methods of language learning and which textbooks are good and why is my jam. This is all over the place in English-language fandoms of Chinese, Japanese, and Korean media. Those fandoms also tend to be full of speakers coming from a Germanic or Romance languages background who face similar hurdles in learning these languages. (In other words, if you’re a native Japanese speaker trying to learn Korean, the parts that will be hard for you are different than if you’re an English speaker, but you’re also usually not doing fandom in English.)

There’s also an element of scarcity and difficulty of access and a communal attempt to construct a canon (in the other sense) of stuff from that country that pertains to one’s fannishness. So, for example, a primer explaining the genre of xianxia is highly relevant to being a n00b Untamed fan, but just any old thing about China is not. A c-drama adapted from a danmei webnovel is perhaps part of the new pantheon of Chinese shit we’re all getting into, but just any old drama from decades ago is probably not... unless it’s a genre precursor to something else we care about. Another aspect here is that while Stuff I Can Access As A N00b Who Doesn’t Speak The Language may be relatively scarce, there’s a vast, vast wealth of stuff that exists.

This is what it felt like to be an anime fan in the US in 2000. As translation got more commercial and more crappy series were licensed and dumped onto an already glutted market, the vibe changed. No longer were fans desperately trying to learn enough of the language to translate or spending their time cataloguing what existed or making fanworks about a show they stuck with for a bit: the overall community focus turned to an endless race of consumption to keep up with all of the latest releases. That’s a perfectly valid way of being fannish, but if I wanted that, I’d binge US television 24/7.

Anime fandom got bigger, but what I liked about anime fandom in English died, and I moved on. (Okay, I first moved on to Onmyouji, which is a live action Japanese thing, but still.)

Hardcore weeaboos and now fans of Chinese and Korean stuff don’t stop at language: people get excited about cooking, my other other great passion. Times a thousand if the canon is something like The Sleuth of the Ming Dynasty, which is full of loving shots of food preparation. People get excited about history! Mandarin and Japanese may share almost nothing in terms of grammar or phonology, but all of East Asia has influence from specific Chinese power centers historically, and there are commonalities to historical architecture and clothing that I love.

I fell out of love with the popular anime art styles as they changed, and I’m not that into animation in general these days. (I still own a shitton of manga in art styles I like, like Okano Reiko’s Onmyouji series.) I’ve become a filmmaker over the last decade, and I’m very excited about beautiful cinematography and editing. With one thing and another, I’m probably not going to get back into anime fandom, but it’s lovely to revisit the cultural aspects I enjoyed about it via live-action media.

BTS surprised me too, to be honest. I really dislike that early 90s R&B ballad style that infests idol music (not just Korean--believe me, I resisted many rounds of “But Johnny’s Entertainment though!” back in the day). While I like some of the dance pop, I just don’t care. But OH NO, BTS turn out to be massive conscious hip hop fanboys, and their music sounds different. But back to your comment about turnover: I know fans from the 70s who’ve had one great fannish love and that’s it and more who were like that but eventually moved on to a second or third. They’re... really fannishly monogamous in a way I find hard to comprehend. It was the norm long ago, but even by the 90s when far more people were getting into fandom, it was seen as a little weird. By now, with exponentially more people in fandom, it’s almost unheard of. I think those fans still exist, even as new people joining, but we don’t notice them. They were always rare, but in the past, only people like that had the stamina to get over the barriers to entry and actually become the people who made zines or were willing to be visibly into fanfic in eras when that was seen as really weird. On top of that, there’s an element of me, us, judging the past by what’s left: only people with an intense and often single passion are visible because other people either drifted away or have seamlessly disappeared into some modern fandom. They don’t say they’re 80 or 60 or 40 instead of 20, so nobody knows.

In general, I’m a small fandoms and rare ships person. My brain will do its best to thwart me by liking whatever has no fic even in a big fic fandom... (Except BTS because there is literally fic for any combination of them, like even more than for the likes of MCU. Wow. Best fandom evar!) So I have an incentive to not get complacent and just stick with one fandom because I would very soon have no ability to be in fandom at all.

My appetite for Consuming All The Things has slowed way down, but it also goes in waves, and a lot of what I’m consuming is what I did back in 2000: journal articles and the limited range of English-language books on the history of m/m sex and romance in East Asia. It’s not so much that I have a million fandoms as that I’m watching a few shows as an expression of my interest in East Asian costume dramas and East Asian history generally.

I do like to sit with one thing and experience it deeply rather than moving on quickly, but the surface expression of this has changed depending on whether I’m more into writing fic or more into doing research or something else.

But yes, I do do a certain amount of trying to stay current, often as a part of research for fandom meta or to help other people know what’s going on. Having a sense of what’s big doesn’t automatically mean getting into all those things, but I think some fans who are older-in-fandom and/or older-in-years stop being open to even hearing what’s new.
