I totally support all of the Liberal “Left” Proposals, and yet, this simple observation, the quote below, is quite correct, and the body of this Opinion Piece shows the path Democrats should take in THIS particular election:
“ ... Not all elections are equal. Some elections are a vote for great changes — like the Great Society. Others are a vote to save the country. This election is the latter. That doesn’t mean a Democratic candidate should stand for nothing, just keep it simple: Focus on building national unity and good jobs. ... “
- Phroyd
I’m struck at how many people have come up to me recently and said, “Trump’s going to get re-elected, isn’t he?” And in each case, when I drilled down to ask why, I bumped into the Democratic presidential debates in June. I think a lot of Americans were shocked by some of the things they heard there. I was.
I was shocked that so many candidates in the party whose nominee I was planning to support want to get rid of the private health insurance covering some 250 million Americans and have “Medicare for all” instead. I think we should strengthen Obamacare and eventually add a public option.
I was shocked that so many were ready to decriminalize illegal entry into our country. I think people should have to ring the doorbell before they enter my house or my country.
I was shocked at all those hands raised in support of providing comprehensive health coverage to undocumented immigrants. I think promises we’ve made to our fellow Americans should take priority, like to veterans in need of better health care.
And I was shocked by how feeble was front-runner Joe Biden’s response to the attack from Kamala Harris — and to the more extreme ideas promoted by those to his left.
So, I wasn’t surprised to hear so many people expressing fear that the racist, divisive, climate-change-denying, woman-abusing jerk who is our president was going to get re-elected, and was even seeing his poll numbers rise.
Dear Democrats: This is not complicated! Just nominate a decent, sane person, one committed to reunifying the country and creating more good jobs, a person who can gain the support of the independents, moderate Republicans and suburban women who abandoned Donald Trump in the midterms and thus swung the House of Representatives to the Democrats and could do the same for the presidency. And that candidate can win!
But please, spare me the revolution! It can wait. Win the presidency, hold the House and narrow the spread in the Senate, and a lot of good things still can be accomplished. “No,” you say, “the left wants a revolution now!” O.K., I’ll give the left a revolution now: four more years of Donald Trump.
That will be a revolution.
Four years of Trump feeling validated in all the crazy stuff he’s done and said. Four years of Trump unburdened by the need to run for re-election and able to amplify his racism, make Ivanka secretary of state, appoint even more crackpots to his cabinet and likely get to name two right-wing Supreme Court justices under the age of 40.
Yes sir, that will be a revolution!
It will be an overthrow of all the norms, values, rules and institutions that we cherish, that made us who we are and that have united us in this common project called the United States of America.
If the fear of that doesn’t motivate the Democratic Party’s base, then shame on those people. Not all elections are equal. Some elections are a vote for great changes — like the Great Society. Others are a vote to save the country. This election is the latter.
That doesn’t mean a Democratic candidate should stand for nothing, just keep it simple: Focus on building national unity and good jobs.
I say national unity because many Americans are terrified and troubled by how bitterly divided, and therefore paralyzed, the country has become. There is an opening for a unifier.
And I say good jobs because when the wealth of the top 1 percent equals that of the bottom 90 percent, we do have to redivide the pie. I favor raising taxes on the wealthiest Americans to subsidize universal pre-K education and to reduce the burden of student loans. Let’s give kids a head start and college grads a fresh start.
But I’m disturbed that so few of the Democratic candidates don’t also talk about growing the pie, let alone celebrating American entrepreneurs and risk-takers. Where do they think jobs come from?
The winning message is to double down on redividing the pie in ways that give everyone an opportunity for a slice while also growing the pie sustainably.
Trump is growing the pie by cannibalizing the future. He is creating a growth spurt by building up enormous financial and carbon debts that our kids will pay for.
Democrats should focus on how we create sustainable wealth and good jobs, which is the American public-private partnership model: Government enriches the soil and entrepreneurs grow the companies.
It has always been what’s made us rich, and we’ve drifted away from it: investing in quality education and basic scientific research; promulgating the right laws and regulations to incentivize risk-taking and prevent recklessness and monopolies that can cripple free markets; encouraging legal immigration of both high-energy and high-I.Q. foreigners; and building the world’s best enabling infrastructure — ports, roads, bandwidth and basic social safety nets.
Ask Gina Raimondo, Rhode Island’s governor, and my kind of Democrat. She was just elected in 2018 for a second term. In both her elections she had to win a primary against a more-left Democrat. When Raimondo took office in 2015, Rhode Island had unemployment near 7 percent, and over 20 percent in some of the building trades.
“When I ran in 2014, there was a temptation to appeal to particular constituencies — gun safety, choice, all things that I believe in,” Raimondo recalled. “I resisted that temptation because I felt the single greatest issue was economic insecurity and people who were afraid they were never going to get a job. So I said there are not three or four issues, there’s one issue: jobs.” Unemployment in Rhode Island today is about 3.6 percent.
Raimondo has faced a constant refrain from critics on her left that she is too close to business. “I created an incentive program for companies to get a tax subsidy if they created jobs that pay above our state’s median income or jobs in advanced industries,” she noted. “I have cut small-business taxes two years in a row since 2015. I am not ashamed of any of that.”
Because, she continued, “I listen to people every day, and you hear what they are worried about. People say to me, ‘Governor, I just got a real job.’ And I’d ask them, ‘What is a real job?’ And they’d say, ‘It’s a job where I can support my family with real benefits.’ So I named our state job-training program ‘Real Jobs Rhode Island.’”It will be impossible to “sustain a vibrant democracy with this level of inequality.”
The right answer is to reinvigorate the key elements of a healthy public-private partnership, said Raimondo: higher taxes on wealthier people, more investments in affordable housing, infrastructure and universal pre-K, and empowering the private sector to create more real jobs — “so that no one who is working full time at any job should have to collect Medicaid and need food stamps to make ends meet.”
Concluded Raimondo: “I am no apologist for a brand of capitalism that leads to unsustainable inequality. But I do believe a more responsible capitalism is necessary for growth. We need to redivide the pie and grow the pie. I am a ‘pro-growth Democrat.’ I am for growing the pie as long as everyone has a shot at getting their slice.”
That’s a simple message that can connect with enough Democrats — as well as independents, moderate Republicans and suburban women — to win the White House.

Blog post numero 2
So, following on from my previous and very first blog post last month, I would firstly like to say how genuinely surprised I was by the amazing comments and words that people fed back to me. I would like to thank those individuals and to anyone who took the precious time to read what I wrote as I really hadn’t thought ahead of any consequence after posting the blog.
I would also like to add how great it felt to open my mind and heart and just blurt out words that were there for all to see, I found it therapeutic and I would urge anyone else who is thinking of doing something similar.
You will come to learn that by reading what I write, if you didn’t already know, I am honest, perhaps a little too much, but I love that about myself (oh yes, a woman in 2019 affirming a positive quality about herself without the need of validation from anyone else). And by being honest I will say that this blog post was particularly difficult for me to get started on. Not difficult in the sense that I found it emotionally testing but perhaps in trying to articulate myself genuinely.
The topic that I would like to talk about this month is school, jobs and careers. Funnily enough, the definition of the word “work” as a synonym can also be known as “exerting oneself” or “to slave away”. The word “career” can be defined as “an occupation undertaken for a significant period of a person’s life and with opportunities for progress.” Now, I’m not sure what thoughts or opinions will cross people’s minds when they read this to themselves, but for me, here’s why I have trouble accepting both definitions.
Let me start from the beginning, buckle up.
From a young age, I was never really interested in school, I mean realistically why would a four-year old child who has spent the only years of their life so far playing and being free, understand or let alone choose why they had to go to a place called “school”.
But I knew and believed that it was important for my future. I believed so based on the values that my mum had taught me and that it was important for me to study hard and pay attention. My Mum had a difficult childhood and upbringing and therefore she never really got the opportunity or better still, the choice whether she wanted to go to school or not. So out of respect and love for my Mum, as well as sensing that she wanted to ensure I got the opportunities that she didn’t.
The school years are a blur from the age of 4 right up to high school and then university. The things that I enjoyed outside of lessons were dance class, singing (I cannot sing but that didn’t stop me) and reading. I remember being called a book worm and my teacher once called me his human dictionary. I would despise doing homework and think it was a load of crap. All I wanted to do was read, and read aloud to anyone who would listen, I would follow my mum around the kitchen reading aloud to her frequently.
As I got older, I enjoyed art class and it was the only hobby I happily and actively chose to do, I was good at art, I think it was the only subject in my entire life I ever achieved an A in. All the hobbies that I have mentioned above all have one thing in common, they are all creative and imaginative activities. Yet, that wasn’t enough for me to realise.
Throughout my teenage years, I didn’t excel in anything at school, along with raging hormones and my primary concerns being if my trousers were tight enough on my arse (I didn’t have one back then) or if the vending machines would have sold out of Chocolate Milk by the time I got to the canteen at lunchtime.
For me, I was at school because what else was there? It’s not like I had a choice to do anything else, or did I? I had a great social life. Life was carefree in comparison to now and “being an adult”. You aren’t taught life skills or what to expect once you leave school. To a certain extent you are protected in this bubble where there is no need to think outside of that. Teachers and parents alike would say, school will help you get a good job/career like it is the only thing that matters on planet Earth.
When high school finished at the age of 16, I still had no idea what career I wanted to pursue or what I wanted to be. I felt an element of pressure for that, like I would slip behind in life if I didn’t decide quickly. I often thought, when will I know what I want to do, or I would ask myself what was wrong with me? I told myself that the best way for me to have a successful career was to educate myself more, and by doing so I chose to go to college and study for A Levels. I told myself, Dayna you didn’t put your all in before but now is your chance to get higher grades and I cannot accept failure because then where will I get in life?
For my A levels I chose to do Psychology, Travel and Tourism and Health and Social Care. I was happy with these subjects because for the first time in my academic life, I was given the choice to decide for myself.
I loved Psychology, I absolutely loved it, it helped that my teacher was bonkers and 80% of his vocabulary was the word “fuck”. He had worked in prisons with sexual offenders for most of his career and once he even brought in a schizophrenic patient with multiple personalities to class. I have always had a real interest in how people operate and theories etc. Travel and tourism was something else I was interested in because I am a real geek when it comes to travelling, and not in the way that you think either. You could be thinking that it’s because I want to see the world (who the fuck doesn’t?) but that wasn’t the driving reason. It’s because I’m a massive geek and I have a weird genuine interest in modes of transport; planes, trains, you name it (but mainly those two). Again, I unashamedly love that about me. And, lastly, Health and Social Care was for me personally, the least interesting choice, I think I chose it at the time in case I decided to work with children or the elderly.
Anyways – I don’t want to bore you with my every single life choice I had made by the time I was 17 but I did my A levels and I was still not getting higher grades. Not because I wasn’t capable, but because I was lazy and couldn’t be bothered. Sure, I loved listening to the facts and information that I was being taught but I used to think, why do I have to write an essay about this topic that I have just learnt. What does it prove? I remember thinking to myself, I don’t want to do this. But I would also be thinking that I was lazy and that I was sabotaging myself for not caring enough about my future. In hindsight, I have since realised and learnt that the schooling system is just wrong. On so many levels. It makes me smile when I think back as a few of my closest friends made the decision to leave college before the first year was over to go down a different route in life, i.e. get a job etc and I remember my mindset at the time was; omg they are going to fail at life (quite literally).
During college I decided I would go on to university. I still couldn’t give a definitive answer about what I wanted to do long term as a career, but I did want to experience more and let’s be honest, university was a 4-year party. I started university at Leeds Metropolitan in September 2011 and graduated 4 years later with a degree in International Hospitality Management. I absolutely loved university. I still stand by the decision that university was hands down one of the best experiences of my life. Whilst I was at university, I had a part time job because I couldn’t afford to live without it. I worked as a Kitchen Assistant for Wetherspoons and for the most part I hated it. The main thing that made it worthwhile was that I worked with completely crazy people who were fun and had something to teach me as I had never met people similar in the past. Working in the kitchen helped me rule out a chef career and gave me an insight into the hard work, long hours and stress that chefs endure.
My university course was a sandwich course which meant that I had to complete a year’s work experience in the industry to count towards my degree. I always had a real interest in hotels and the way they operated so I decided I would apply for a receptionist role in a hotel in Leeds. I remember writing my CV and printing 50 copies, putting on a suit and then walking around the entirety of Leeds walking into each hotel handing in my CV to a member of staff. I would like to add that I could have easily just looked for jobs online and applied that way, but I thought that it showed willing by actively going in and introducing myself. I never heard back from any hotel, except for the one that I got the job in.
The hotel I worked in was a large hotel with 134 bedrooms and a leisure club and spa that had 5,000 external members alone. When I started it was tough and on my first day, I was so nervous I couldn’t even answer the phone. But I stuck at it and was promoted to Team Leader 8 months after I joined, and I worked there for just under 3 years. I remember when I started working there, I really enjoyed it. I would work long shifts, up to 12 hours per day and double shifts where I would finish at 11pm and be back in at 6am the next day. I would bend over backwards based on the knowledge that I was doing a great job. But then I began to realise that I wasn’t appreciated. I wasn’t appreciated through words or emotions, or through tangible elements such as pay incentives or reward. I write all of this for a reason, I began to realise, and things started to add up. I started to focus more on the employees and how they felt and what motivated them rather than the business or how many people I could sell an upgraded room type to.
Motivation is a word that can be defined in a thousand and one ways, I would know, I wrote 12,000 words for my dissertation on that topic alone. Motivation is something that has been researched and built upon over the years and is something that all companies should take seriously.
For me personally, I am motivated intrinsically, I like to feel warm and gooey inside knowing that I have achieved something to be proud of or I have made someone else smile with my words etc.
Other people may be more motivated by objects and items, money, and what they can purchase with the money.
For example, you could argue that a Doctor or a nurse must be intrinsically motivated because we all know how little they are paid for the years of studying and ball breaking dedication they put into helping others and saving lives.
Eventually I realised which career path I wanted to embark on, Human Resources. It had clicked in my mind that I wanted to work with the employees of a company as my customers rather than the customers that were buying the products or services from a company. So, I started searching for HR roles within the hospitality industry, I still loved the hospitality industry so I wanted to remain there, but I wanted to work more with supporting the employees and by doing so, they would support the company. Richard Branson, one of the greatest entrepreneurs of all time says, “A company is people. Employees want to know, am I being listened to or am I a cog in the wheel? People really needed to feel wanted”. I got my first HR trainee role and relocated back home and started my first ever “real 9-5” job.
To cut another ultra-long story short, about a year after I had started the new HR role, even though I really loved it, I began to think to myself – is this all there is? You could call me overly ambitious but knowing myself I am just impatient. And somewhere along the lines, between graduating university with all the hopes and excitement that I first had and being a few years down the line in my career, reality set in and the little voice in my head said, be realistic.
But why should I tell myself to be realistic, I am a millennial. I come from an era where parents told us we could be anything that we wanted to be. When you are five years old and you dream of being an astronaut or a cowboy, your parents agree with you because it is harmless right? so why would you ever think that you were being unrealistic?
Working in HR I know that it is still widely frowned upon to look at an applicant’s CV and see that they have “job hopped” since they graduated. Recruiters and employers who aren’t willing to adapt to change believe that it shows a lack of stability and loyalty from a person if they change roles and companies every year or so. Well gone are the days where our grandparents would start a job at the age of 16 and do the same job until retirement at the ripe old age of 65. The world today is changing at an ever-increasing rate and who is to be certain of what tomorrow brings?
I am now in this process and point in my life where I have started to expose myself to new information and learn something that was foreign to me. As I said in my previous post, we don’t know what we don’t know. But when you start to focus your attention towards something, it manifests. Another core belief of mine is that everything happens for a reason, and that we are exposed to certain life events on purpose.
I have realised at the age of 27, that I don’t want to work for another 40 years until I can retire and live off state pension. I don’t want to work for someone else’s goals and objectives, I don’t want to be told how many hours I must work per week. I don’t want my financial stability to be in someone else’s hands. The list goes on and on.
It is fine to say, I don’t want this, I don’t want that, but the question is: do I have the power to change it? Absolutely. I revert to my previous comment about the fact that we tell children they can be anything they dream to be. So why is it that if I tell someone at the age of 27 that I am starting my own business and I am going to be an entrepreneur they look at me like I am batshit or tell me to be realistic? My grandma used to tell me when I was a teenager, study hard, why don’t you become a doctor. And even at a young age I would think in my mind, the only reason is because it would look and sound good to others so that she could say, “My granddaughter is a Doctor”.
I write all of this with no disrespect to a single soul. No disrespect to my loved ones or friends. Because 6 months ago, I was included in the 93% of the population that all live within the “rules” and norms of society. The rules being that you go to school, study hard, get good grades and then get a good job and jump through hoops for 40+ years of your life to provide for yourself and family and then you get to retire just a few years before death (if you make it that far). The late Jim Rohn, who was one of the world’s most famous entrepreneurs and motivational speakers said, “Formal education will make a living; self-education will make you a fortune”. It is correct, formal education does make you a living. I can honestly say hand on heart that I have never needed to use Algebra in my life since leaving school and that a calculator gets me through just fine. Self-education is what we choose freely, we have the choice to invest in ourselves or not.
One of my pet hates, which I am totally guilty of doing in the past is when people say, “Happy Friday” or “thank god it’s Friday”. Isn’t that sad? Society has created a monster, to the point where people may not even be necessarily conscious of what they are doing daily because it is like being on a hamster wheel. The daily commute to work at the same time every day, the same route, the same things that we see each day.
Maybe it is just me reading too much into it. But I do believe that to a certain extent, Instagram is also promoting the hamster wheel by having emojis that say “TGIF” or a Camel with the word Wednesday above it. I feel like people are wishing their life away, for 5 days of the week to be over, to then “live” for the other two.
I need to keep emphasising the point that I am not writing any of this as if I am better than anyone else, I have been doing most of the above for my entire life up until this point too. I am simply sharing what I have experienced and learnt and where I am at present in my life.
I have been at the point where I would wake up in the morning and would have rather done quite literally anything else but go to work because I hated my job, and I knew that I didn’t have a choice but to go because of one reason – money. Money was the primary reason and control over me having to go to a workplace. As Charles Bukowski famously says, “how in the hell could a man enjoy being awakened at 6:30am by an alarm clock, leap out of bed, force feed, shit, piss, get dressed and fight traffic to get to a place where essentially you made lots of money for somebody else and were asked to be grateful for the opportunity to do so?”
The reason that it strikes an emotional reaction inside me is because I have come from a family and background with little money. Most things have been a struggle. For example, when I turned 17, the legal age to drive a car, I didn’t pass my driving test straight away because my family couldn’t afford to fund the lessons, and neither could I. So, I passed my test when I was 19 instead, after I had earnt the money myself out of stubbornness. My mum offered to help me countless times, but I was adamant I would do it myself even when my friends would mock me for being lazy and not passing sooner. I have never had money chucked at me for things, holidays etc. And when I did have the financial capacity to have more freedom, I chose wrong and got myself into debt because I went to Ibiza and festivals etc. I don’t regret any of the decisions I made, because it was all a part of the learning process.
But since I started to invest in myself to become better, I realised that in the past, I had chosen to accept what was handed to me, instead of trying to create my own journey or spending time trying to find what my passions are to create a life that I chose, not that I slept walked through.
One of the most eye opening and invaluable books that I have read is “Rich Dad, Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki. There’s an old saying, that the rich get richer and the poor get poorer, I used to believe that the rich were conniving and unjust. People say that the rich keep all the money and don’t help “the poor?” Why aren’t the poor doing anything to help themselves? Well, Robert also says that the word JOB stands for “Just Over Broke”. Perhaps I am being overly cynical but for me, this quote stands true as the sky is blue.
I find myself talking and talking so I guess I should wrap it up.
What I have learnt based on reflection and through changing what I pay attention to is that most of society is messed up. We are sent to school from a very young age and are kept there until the age of 18. We aren’t given the freedom or information to understand that we can think outside the box and that we don’t have to go to work for someone else. But then think of it another way, if everyone was taught at school that they could be an entrepreneur and teachers provided real life and world changing examples like Warren Buffet, Bill Gates, Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, Steve Jobs… then wouldn’t there be too many “successful people” in the world. But that wouldn’t happen because people are like sheep, they follow what is “normal” or they prefer living in their comfort zone.
The world is forever evolving and whilst it is scary, it is also so exciting. Mary Augustine says that we become happier in life when we realise that life is an opportunity rather than an obligation. The amazing entrepreneurs that I mentioned above should be the people we are thanking and counting our blessings for, for the opportunities they have provided to the entire world. Mark Zuckerberg for Facebook, Steve Jobs for Apple, Mike Krieger and Kevin Systrom for Instagram, to name a few. They have enriched so many people’s lives because of their innovative minds, for being brave enough to think outside of the box and push and believe in their dreams even when the fear of the unknown was greater. Astoundingly, millions of people choose to spend their precious time keeping up with the Kardashians plastic faces on Instagram, so if they became rich for doing nothing… then the world is our oyster!
Much love xxx

What is a Robot?
A robot is a machine capable of carrying out a complex series of actions automatically, especially one programmable by a computer. The idea of robot is ancient. Even in some of the earliest civilizations, there were signs of try to build automaton, a self-operating machine. Archytas built a self operating bird as early as 410 BC. In our discussion, we are considering the self operated machines, which can be termed as social robots on the basis of their usage in social purpose and more importantly their awareness and role playing as social beings.
What is Social Robot?
A social robot is an autonomous robot that interacts and communicates with humans or other autonomous physical agents by following social behaviors and rules attached to its role. A social robot may or may not have a physical embodiment. For an example, the “Tamagochi” or “Lovable Egg” was a character on the LCD screen of a portable device but it followed social behaviors and rules attached to its role, in this case of a pet or a child’s. (Levy, 2005)
Sherry Turkle (2011) in her book Alone Together: Why We Expect More From Technology and Less From Each Other points out that in the company of social robots, people are alone, yet feel connected. People in real life have to be concerned with others’ attitudes while in virtual life there is no restriction. This can lead to a loss of trust in human beings, which provides incentive to find a robot one can control. Turkle completes fifteen years of interviews and observations by using an ethnographical approach. She pays more attention to the young adults and children who are considered “digital natives” and discusses human relationship with social robots.
Social robots can be both physically anthropomorphic (i.e. ASIMO or TOSY), and/or mentally anthropomorphic (i.e. Siri). In the later case they can be programs in computers. In our discussion we are considering both types of robots.
Different Dimensions of a Social Robot
In “A Space Odyssey” Bowman said, “A machine becomes human when you can’t tell the difference any more” (Bowman, 2001). The way we can tell the difference (other than by physical appearance) is by evaluating the intellect, creativity and emotions a being exudes in a social environment. These are the primary dimensions of a social robot.
In creating the “Turing test”, a test of a machine's ability to exhibit intelligent behavior equivalent to, or indistinguishable from, that of a human, Alan Turing stated a view that a machine should be regarded as intelligent if it gives the appearance of being intelligent (Turing, 1950). It can be stated, that intelligence, albeit artificial, is one aspect of robots that we have come to accept facing sufficient proofs. An intelligent agent is a system that perceives its environment and takes actions that maximize its chances of success (Russell & Norvig, 2003).
“Creativity is sometimes taken as to be an inexplicable aspect of human activity” (Buchanan, 2001). The first time machine creativity came into question was when Alan Turing asked “Can machines Think?”(Turing, 1950). Although Ada Lovelace, the mother of all artificial intelligence, argued that machines can not be creative, she was more specifically talking about the machine she and Charles Babbage has created (Lovelace, 1953). It was a computing machine. However, with advent in technology regarding artificial intelligence, we now see robots which can be categorized as creative in the field of poetry, writing fiction, painting and music. Kurzweil’s work in 1980s created a program RKCP which can analyze the writing style of famous poets and write endearing poems. The most advanced writing robot till date is BRUTUS. It can conceive the theme of “betrayal”. It uses its logic of story grammars and literacy grammar to produce stories, that is hard to distinguish from one written by a human. AARON a painting robot, paints exquisite masterpieces (Cohen, 1995). But the most enchanting art comes from a program in 1997, when more than 200 years after the “Jupiter” the 41st symphony of Mozart, a 42nd piece was composed by EMI a program developed by David Cope, a professor in the music department of UCSC. It had all the glorious features of a Mozart symphony. So there is sufficient proof that a robot/program can pass as creative.
However, the most difficult barrier to become a social robot is having emotions. According to Davis there are five characteristics, we look for in an object for it to pass as a being with emotions.
1. Its behaviour seems to arise from emotion
2. Fast primary emotional response to stimuli
3. Can generate emotions cognitively
4. Can have - emotional experiences, physiological awareness and subjective feelings
5. Its emotion can interact with other processes like memory, perception and learning
Studies show, modern social robots like AIBO and JIBO can successfully arouse emotions in a person and specially in children. They can simulate having emotions and feelings. They have physiological awareness and can pretend to feel pain. They have certain logic of emotions which vary on the scale of pleasure and range from ecstatic to thoroughly miserable.
In building robots proper social being, robots are not the only conren. To what extent a robot is social is also subject to the perception of humans surrounding it. Are we accepting of its presence as a valid member of the social system or not is very important. In the following part, we are going to discuss the different usage of social robots.
Robots as Support
Work Assistance
Siri is the most commonly used social robots in working settings. It is a virtual social robot application for Apple’s IOS which serves as a personal assistant and knowledge navigator. Siri can answer questions, make recommendations, and perform actions by delegating requests to a set of web services. Siri’s voice sounds attractive and some users even chat with it to enjoy a moment of intimacy. Admittedly, not just social robots but all the robots being programmed can work as assistants. However, social robots are communicable that helps human-robot interaction experience similar to face to face communication.
Parental/Family Support
A young boy in Turkle’s study complained that even a robot would remember what he said, which was more than his father does when multitasking on his blackberry. MIT Professor Cynthia Breazeal and her colleagues developed a social robot called “Jibo”. According to the video advertisement of Jibo, this is a family social robot designed to be a partner in the family rather than a working tool that uses to be a cleaner. “Jibo can take photos or video, track movements for more dynamic video filming, perform stories for children, give verbal reminders, and generally hang out” (Newman, 2014). Jibo seems more communicable because it can even tell stories to children and chat with you as a friend. This arouse us attention that whether a family social robot could be a family member that change the inherent relational schemas in a certain family.
Health Support
Social robots have been widely used in healthcare support especially in mental health area. Paro, a robotic baby seal, began to serve therapeutic functions and were introduced into nursing homes. Designers claimed that the robotic baby seal had positive psychological effects on patients in nursing homes. Turkle once interviewed an old woman living in boston who suffers from depression. The woman seemed to find comfort in holding Paro in her lap while stoking its fur. Paro then responded with loving eye contact as it had been programmed to do. During the interaction, the old woman got relief and experienced a moment of intimacy which may lessen her sadness.
A robot called “Tug” has been used in University of California, San Francisco. Tug delivers drugs, clean linens and meals while carting away medical waste and soiled sheets and trash. Down in the kitchen, the cooks, who aren’t robots, would fire up food, load it onto a Tug, and use a touchscreen next to the docking stations to tell the robot where to go. Each robot travels an admirable average of 12 miles a day.
Education Support
Tico is a social robot developed by Adele Robots in promotional events and education as a helper for teachers. It features endearing, funny and innovative achieve a significant increase students’ attention. Han and Pea (2013) found strong social relationships were formed between children and robots after the introduction of robots to the classroom, however the children’s social degree towards the teacher showed little change. Social robots are especially important in educating, communicating and helping children with autism. They can be developed into useful tools for social skills and communication therapies, specifically by embedding social interaction into intrinsic reinforcers and motivators (Kim et al., 2013).
Robotic Toys/Pets
A ten-year-old girl would prefer a robot turtle because aliveness comes with aesthetic inconvenience: “Its water looks dirty. Gross.” (Turkle, 2011, p.4). Digital natives were trained to interact with social robots that demanded care. Turkle found that when children interact with sociable robots like Furbies, they move beyond a psychology of projection to a new psychology of engagement. They try to deal with the robot as they would deal with a pet or a person. For example, children would feed and love Tamagotchi, a little egg-shaped robot requires care from owner; otherwise, it will die. Hence children found companionship with robotic toys that seemed to project emotions like happiness and sadness. In addition, some social robots can serve as interactive entertainment media through which children especially young children can get a better game experience.
Love with Robots
Lewis Mumford said, “If you fall in love with a machine there is something wrong with your love life” (Mumford, 1952). Many seem to believe that, and to some extent it might be true. It poses two questions -
Is it possible to love a robot? and;
Why we should love a robot?
The idea of falling in love with an inanimate object is ancient. The Roman Poet Ovid, in his Metamorphoses, describes Pygmalion, the sculptor who carves the ivory statue of a perfect woman Galatea, and falls in love with it/her. He prays to Aphrodite so that the statue may come alive. One night Aphrodite grants him the wish, Pygmalion kisses his perfect creation and the simulacrum comes alive.
Love is a collection of different feelings and attitudes that ranges from interpersonal affection to pleasure. It can refer to an emotion of a strong attraction and personal attachment. (Oxford Illustrated American Dictionary, 1998). It can also be a virtue representing kindness, compassion, and affection - "the unselfish loyal and benevolent concern for the good of another". (Merriam Webster Dictionary, 2015). It may also describe compassionate and affectionate actions towards other humans, one's self or animals. (Fromm, 1956)
We can systematically argue, there are different types of love regarding a social robot. A love ‘for’ a social robot and love ‘with’ social robot. According the the above definition by Fromm, it is evident that we can feel love for a social robot, even if its emotion is not comparable to our own emotional prowess. If we then discuss the love with social robot, it brings in two parties, a human and a robot. As we have concluded from the human’s side it is possible to feel love, we must now decide if a robot can feel love. To be very honest even researchers are divided on that. If we take Turing’s test of artificial intelligence and apply it on artificial love, we can deduce - artificial love, if imitated exactly and if unrecognizable from the human love, can be considered as love. So, if we can create social robots that can imitate love to the tiniest details (which seem impossible with the current stage of technology) it is possible to be in love ‘with’ a social robot.
The second question is “why would we fall in love with a robot?” The answer lies in the evolving nature of human civilization. With the advancement of urbanization and technology, humans are getting further apart from the perceived identity they were born with. They are taking up new identity, and creating their own social sphere. This is giving them independence but taking away the emotional bonds they had with other human beings. Once a person grows distant in his/her mind with the society they came from, it becomes increasingly harder to reintegrate in it to get emotional support. So, humans are becoming more dependent on the immediate partners for emotional reliefs. However, not everyone is lucky to find a perfect partner. So what if this retreat from the world to our immediate vicinity of friends and family and gradually to the closest partner is going to take us further into retreat in the future to our own self only? Just like a lonely child who confides in her doll about the harshness of the world and love it for being there to listen, would robots be considered as good partners for love in future?
Turkle describes, a young woman is willing to trade in her boyfriend for a sophisticated robot that could simulate caring behavior and offer her a no-risk relationship - a robot will never hurt you, lie to you, cheat on you, be jealous, be too tired to listen, get bored and have demands of its own. And as a sexual partner, a robot could easily be programmed. (Turkle, 2011) Which brings us to the next discussion, sex with robots.
Sex with Robots
Humans have the immense ability to perceive. From the early childhood development mechanism of role play, we can carry out conversations on our own with an imaginary person. Pictures, videos, writings have the ability to arouse humans. In that case, the human is not being attracted to the writing, but the perception of a person the literary work is describing. By the prevalence of the porn industry, it can be safely assumed that, we are content with the idea of sexual experience with a perception.
So what is different from sex with a sex toy, and sex with a robot? The difference is in emotions, and in love. But in our above argument we have discussed it is possible even if not prevalent to be in love with robots. It is definitely true as a physical conduct, robots can be better than humans in many aspects. They can sense the minute details and act to please the partner accordingly, they can be programmed to follow certain rules and manners and make the experience more intimate. Researchers say, sex with robots can go mainstream as near as in 2050 (Bates, 2012)
A Vision from the Future
Some people are worried about the future of social robots, who think that social robot is the largest existential threats for human beings. Turkle holds that humans cannot and should not be replaced by robots, because we humans have some wonderful quality, such as creativity, warmth, compassion and genuine understanding, that no robot could ever really provide. She believes that demanding these acts of intimacy from sociable robots means we demand less from each other. Like the case of an old woman above, she was actually being alone because Paro indeed is a robot that can not truly share intimacy with human beings. Tukle cautions that we may further retreat into our relationships with technology to avoid the “messiness” of our human relationships. She requires modern people to think critically about their relationship with robots and technologies that be vigilant to digital dependency and its impact on personal relationships.
Three months back, top tech persons including Bill Gates and Elon Musk voiced together with physicist Stephen Hawking and warned of threats artificial intelligence could pose. Along with a collection of intellectuals who signed a Future of Life Institute letter in January, the three leading innovators support development of AI to benefit society, but are wary of the potential dangers.
"They said this is one of the largest existential threats facing humanity. They worry that you're going to have robots that are more intelligent than humans, that will have their own volition and that will have hugely negative effects on society,"

Women Laws and Law Firms in Pakistan:
According to the law firms in Pakistan the family planning is un-Islamic is quite contrary to the actual position comprehensive study (schedule to this report) has discussed the Islamic viewpoint on family planning thoroughly it concludes that family planning is permissible on the authority of the Holy Quran itself, from various traditions and opinions of various Islamic jurists and scholars. Several law firms in Pakistan hold that family planning is not only permissible but desirable. The reasons cited for it include avoidance of labor pains, an excessive number of woman's fear that her beauty may get affected. The night of deciding to control fertility rests with each of the spouses. Where termination of pregnancy or abortion is concerned, a substantial body of jurists has held that a woman is free to have an abortion until 120 days of her pregnancy, even without the consent of the husband. Recommendations of law firms in Pakistan:
1- The educational and health needs of women should be given top priority.
2- All governmental schemes programs must be geared towards removing all gender-disparities in education facilities; all existing schemes or programs should be immediately converted into programs for girls; ill parity is achieved incentives of food, scholarships, etc. should be introduced for lower-income families. Mechanisms should be developed for enforcing compulsory primary education and law firms in Pakistan should participate in it.
3- The financial allocations for education should be enhanced to 4% from the existing.
4- At least 50 ó of the entire education and training budget at all levels should be for girls and women.
5- Provision should be made for opportunities for women in new technologies
6- Allocations to the health and population sectors sector should be gradually
7- An outreach of all health, nutrition, hygiene and sanitation programs should be training based on market needs increased to 6 % of GDP, in keeping with the WHO philosophy extended with a particular focus on rural women, urban slums, squatter settlements and women with disabilities. Regulations should be amended to ensuring women the right to avail of tubal ligation without the husband's permission and law firms in Pakistan should be consulted.
8- Women's right to obtain an abortion by her choice within the first 120 days.
9- Pregnancy is unambiguously declared an absolute legal right.
10- Women's right to obtain an abortion beyond the 120 days be made permissible only in the event of pregnancy due to rape, in the case of seriously disabled girls and women, in case of danger to the woman's life or serious threat to her health, and in the case of any exposure to disease or other hazards which may result in abnormality of the child.
11- Serious attention should be given towards providing reproductive and maternal health care facilities, according to several recommendations made earlier, along with sufficient financial allocations.
12- Family planning programs should be to target men both as user’s ad forwardness-raising. Information on any disseminated highlighting the fact that a vasectomy for a male is a far less serious operation than tubal ligation forewoman.
13- Media should play a more constructive role in raising awareness about women's reproductive health issues.
14- Tax or other incentives for families with three or fewer children should be considered. While it is difficult to go into exhaustive details about the provision of basic facilities, it is necessary to highlight some which are necessary for view of the increasing number of women entering the labor market and assuming more responsibilities in the public sphere.

The president and the Squad are happy to push the Democratic party further to the left – but Pelosi disagrees‘They believe that this transformation not only will lead to progressive legislative victories, it will also win elections.’ Photograph: J Scott Applewhite/APAmerican politics makes some extremely odd bedfellows. That’s worth keeping in mind when trying to understand why Donald Trump Twitter-trolled four progressive, first-term congresswomen of color – Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts and Rashida Tlaib of Michigan – in his now-infamous “go back” tweet. Although Trump and “the Squad” (the collective nickname for the congresswomen) have venomously denounced each other, the reality is that they both want the same thing: to make the women the public face of the Democratic party. And their greatest obstacle is the Democratic House speaker, Nancy Pelosi. The Squad have welcomed and sought out public attention because they want to use their celebrity to push the party to the left, just as the conservative movement pushed the Republican party to the right in decades past. They believe that this transformation not only will lead to progressive legislative victories, it will also win elections. As Ocasio-Cortez’s chief of staff, Saikat Chakrabarti, recently told the Washington Post:“The whole theory of change for the current Democratic party is that to win this country we need to tack to the hypothetical middle. What I think that means is, you don’t take unnecessary risks, which translates to: you don’t really do anything. Whereas we’ve got a completely different theory of change, which is: you do the biggest, most badass thing you possibly can – and that’s going to excite people, and then they’re going to go vote.”One implication of this approach, obviously, is that progressives should advance ambitious leftwing policies – like Ocasio-Cortez’s Green New Deal, pulled directly from the demands of the Democratic Socialists of America – without negotiating or compromising with moderate Democrats, let alone Republicans. Another is that moderate Democrats who object to progressive policies have to be shamed and pressured into getting with the program – as Chakrabarti tried to do by comparing moderates to segregationists – or removed through primary election challenges from the left, as Ocasio-Cortez has threatened. These policies worked for the Tea Party on the Republican side, so the thinking goes, so why shouldn’t they work for progressives?Yet another implication of this approach is that progressives shouldn’t attempt to win over swing voters – particularly white voters – but instead should maximize turnout from minorities, who lean Democratic by wide margins but typically don’t vote at the same rates as whites. The model here is Stacey Abrams, who in her 2018 Georgia gubernatorial campaign nearly became the first African American woman to be elected governor of any state, largely on the strength of her success in getting minorities to the polls and driving voter turnout to record highs. According to this theory, the rising prominence of Ocasio-Cortez and her cohort, who embody the Democrats’ growing diversity and progressivism, can excite minority turnout to such a level that the country’s move toward majority minority demographics finally translates to Democratic political dominance. For all these reasons, progressives want the Squad to be the new face of the Democratic party. Pelosi, however, disagrees. The San Franciscan is a progressive herself but also an adept political calculator, who understands that Democrats regained the House in 2018 by running moderate candidates in Republican-held districts. She has skillfully held her caucus together so far by uniting them around policies with wide appeal and avoiding actions (such as pursuing Trump’s impeachment) that could split moderates and progressives. She fears that the majority making districts – and the Democratic House majority – will revert to Republican control if their college-educated, mostly suburban and mostly white swing voters who were repelled by Trump in 2018 turn out to be even more repelled by the Democrats’ most extreme members in 2020.Pelosi is also well aware that while the Squad have an intense following among leftwing activists and on social media, overall they are some of the most unpopular politicians in America. A recent poll of swing district voters found that Ocasio-Cortez was recognized by nearly three-quarters of voters but viewed favorably by only 22%. Ocasio-Cortez’s self-proclaimed ideology of socialism was viewed favorably by only 18% of those surveyed – which still made it twice as popular as Omar, who was viewed favorably by only 9%. Those are toxic levels of unpopularity. Many Democrats worry that if the party becomes defined by the Squad, they could lose not only the House but the presidency.> The Squad make even better foils for Trump’s 'America first' approach than Pelosi ever didWhich of course is why Trump has every incentive to make the Squad his principal target, and to achieve maximum publicity by doing so in a calculatedly xenophobic and (at least) borderline racist way that’s guaranteed to provoke widespread condemnation. It verges on surreal to see Trump defending Pelosi – who has been demonized by Republicans since she first wielded the speaker’s gavel in 2007 – against supposed charges of racism by the Squad. But the Squad make even better foils for Trump’s “America first” approach than Pelosi ever did, given the broader range of rage buttons they push among many culturally conservative Americans. And the more media attention the Squad receives, according to many Republican strategists, the more Democratic presidential candidates will feel pressured into embracing progressive positions on issues such as open borders, abortion, racial reparations and healthcare for undocumented migrants that are unpopular with the overall electorate.Trump’s attack on the Squad of course damaged the schemes of those Republican strategists who hope that, in an America where the Republican’s base of non-college-educated whites continues to shrink, the party might build a majority on racially and ethnically inclusive populism. But Trump’s major strategic error may have been to have strengthened Pelosi’s hand. Already Trump’s tweets seem to have restored Democratic unity behind Pelosi and reinforced her message that the party’s internal divisions are fodder for Trumpian mischief. The Congressional Black Caucus’ emphatic backing of Pelosi against the Squad may have taught them something about the limitations of identity politics and the realities of political power. But Trump’s intervention has also given Pelosi and Squad a golden opportunity to publicly reconcile without anyone losing face. The fact that some of the usually supine Republicans in Congress spoke out against Trump’s slurring his opponents’ patriotism pointed out that many Americans – perhaps a majority – oppose his efforts to divide the country. It’s possible that Trump’s abdication of the role of unifier-in-chief may have handed it to Pelosi since, unlike Trump, she is visibly striving to find common ground among contending factions. Trump isn’t the first politician to have underestimated Pelosi, but in the long run it may cost him more than whatever he gains by attacking the Squad. * Geoffrey Kabaservice is the director of political studies at the Niskanen Center in Washington DC as well as the author of Rule and Ruin: The Downfall of Moderation and the Destruction of the Republican Party

Blog #7: Monday at CRHP in Jamkhed
**Warning: This is very long and divided by day. I spent the last week at the NGO Comprehensive Rural Health Project in Jamkhed (4 hours east of Pune). It was INCREDIBLE! Seriously so amazing. I typed up all my notes because I think they’re interesting so feel free to peruse… also here is the organization’s website http://jamkhed.org/
Monday March 25, 2019
Major Events: Lectures on CRHP Jamkhed, Primary Health Care Principles, the Jamkhed Model
1. Overview Lecture on CRHP Jamkhed
Drs. Raj and Mabelle Arole founded the Comprehensive Rural Health Project in Jamkhed in 1970. Dr. Raj grew up in the state of Maharashtra and experienced the epidemics of plague and cholera as he was growing up. The deaths of close friends and family affected him so greatly that he decided he would become a doctor to serve his community. Raj went to medical school where he met Mabelle. The two shared visions of serving their communities and were married in 1959. They worked in rural areas and learned about the needs of rural communities. When working at a hospital the presiding doctor decided that the two of them should take over running the hospital. These two young doctors were surprised at this opportunity but took on the work. After working at the hospital a few years, the two went to Johns Hopkins to train in public health, reconstructive surgery, and leprosy. Upon returning to India, the couple was driving home when they stopped to see a friend who was a freedom fighter. When they got to talking about the dreams of the Drs. to provide care to rural communities in need, their friend said to them, why don’t you just stay here? Thus, the idea for CRHP began and stayed in Jamkhed, Maharashtra.
2. Lecture on Primary Health Care Principles
There are four principles of primary healthcare which CRHP follows: equity, integration, empowerment, and appropriate technology. To begin with, we defined equity versus equality. Equality is when you treat everyone the same, or give everyone the same amount of resources. Equity, however, means that instead of giving everyone the same treatment or amount of something, you give the appropriate amount to become equal no matter where they started.
The needs of the most in need must be addressed first, and those in need must be involved and participate and the discussions addressing their needs.
The second principle of CRHP’s primary health care principles is integration. Their definition of integration is a holistic approach to health, as matches the WHO definition of health (“a state of complete physical, mental, and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmary”). For example, the CRHP has a mobile health team which functions as a direct health outreach team, and there is a CRHP hospital, but there are also programs for social well being such as women’s, men’s, adolescent girls and adolescent boys’ groups, there is a CRHP organic farm, and there are training programs for village health workers.
In addition to a holistic approach to health, CRHP itself functions as an interdisciplinary organization. The organization has a team approach to all decision-making and programs and many workers are trained and qualified for multiple jobs at CRHP. It is common for people to have multiple jobs at CRHP in the time they work there. For example, Meena, the preschool teacher, used to be a lab technician, and then when the preschool was created she became the head teacher.
The programs at CRHP are comprehensive, they respond to the demands and needs of the community instead of imposing policies or practices. The health systems must be affordable, appropriate, and incorporate traditional practices. As an NGO, CRHP wants to cut costs anywhere possible. One of their programs is Jaipur Foot, which provides prosthetic feet to villagers. The cost of the prosthetic, as with hospital services, is on a sliding scale. Patients are asked to pay what they are able. Sometimes that is full price and sometimes that is 100 rupees. The Jaipur foot used to be made out of rubber, but it was realized that these rubber feet did not last long when men especially were working daily in fields. Thus, the foot was switched to wood. The switch from rubber to wood may seem counter progressive, but in fact the use of wood is the most durable and appropriate material for the setting. In addition to this switch, all the pieces of the prosthetic are separate so if it breaks, you are able to replace only one piece instead of the entire prosthetic.
The final way CRHP attempts to have an integrative approach to health is through multi-sectorial work. The organization works closely with the Indian government. They do not ever want to imply that they are a better resource than the government, they only want to fill gaps. For example, up until ten years ago the CRHP hospital was incredibly busy. It was the only affordable and safe hospital in the area. Then, the government began building more primary and secondary care hospitals. Now, the CRHP hospital only has one full time doctor and one full time nurse on duty. CRHP encourages citizens to use the government resources because ideally you are indeed able to depend on the government to provide certain services.
The third principle of CRHP’s approach to health is empowerment. First you must come to know the community, listen to them, learn from them, build rapport, and then you may develop a relationship and partnership. CRHP believes in value-based development. The values in health and development must exist within the community in order for change to occur and be sustained. We defined a state of empowerment as a state of identifying yourself, your strengths, being able to make decisions for yourself, to know you have freedom, and to enjoy this freedom. “Success always lies within the community,” Dr. Mabelle Arole said.
This idea of empowerment explains how CRHP approaches communities with a value-based approach. CRHP will send a mobile health team into communities to conduct basic services, but this tends to be the extent of their involvement, until the community approaches the mobile health team (MHT) or CRHP and requests more involvement. The community members will then meet with CRHP and discuss the strengths of the community, weaknesses, opportunities, and external traits or factors that play a role in the community. After this analysis of the community, CRHP will decide if the community is at need, what needs can be met, and if they should get involved. It is at this point that the community will officially become a “project village,” i.e. one that CRHP is working in. The village is expected to appoint a woman to become the village health worker who will be trained by CRHP and function as the community’s first connection to health knowledge, prevention, and services. The model relies on the trust that the community will value these changes and become empowered to continue them.
The final principle of CRHP’s approach to healthcare is appropriate technology. Who are the available people to work, what facilities are available, what supplies and equipment are available, affordable, and make sense? Which drugs are essential to have, when can traditional medicines be used? Can energy sources be renewable? Does the education CRHP is providing make sense in context? For example there is a science lab, which young people can participate in science courses at. The science experiments are in biology, chemistry, physics, and computer science. The experiments students will perform teach science to be relevant and applicable to students’ every day lives. The final aspect of appropriate technology is the use of locally available resources: materials and also people.
3. Lecture on the Jamkhed Model
The CRHP model at Jamkhed has three primary components, the village health workers (VHW), mobile health team (MHT), and CRHP secondary hospital. They work on the same plane:
The VHW actually inspired the gov’t model’s ASHA role. The village health worker is a married woman with at least one child who is chosen by her community to be trained and serve as the VHW. There is one VHW per 500-1000 population. The village health worker discusses and educates community members about health, primarily with a preventative focus. She discusses social issues such as gender roles and dowry. She screens people and educates about mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. She leads community groups such as the women’s group, men’s group, adolescent girls’ and adolescent boys’ groups. The VHW is not paid, but during her training she receives 200 rupees per training attended, travel, and food at the courses. In the past sometimes VHWs were also given grains, oils, or even saris when they came to training. These are the most tangible incentives for VHWs, but the biggest incentive is the knowledge and skills that come from training as a village health worker. Many of the women we met who were VHWs were from poor, low caste families in which they were not treated as valuable by their families or communities. When coming to CRHP to be trained, for many women it was the first time they had sat or shared meals with women of other castes, and it was the first time they felt they could acquire valuable knowledge. The skills and knowledge they had then gave them a new level of respect in their communities. In addition to this respect, our lecturer Jayesh Ji said that a huge motivation to become a village health worker is the idea and role of helping your own village. For many women this is the most satisfying aspect, to be doing good and valuable work. Once a woman becomes a village health worker she will hold the role as long as she likes.
The Mobile Health Team (MHT) used to be comprised of a doctor, nurse, lab technician, pharmacist, social worker, and civil engineer. As rates of disease have gone down and development has increased it is no longer necessary to have so many members, so the MHT today is mostly comprised of social workers. The MHT trains village health workers, organizes community groups (partnered with VHW), trains international groups that visit CRHP (about the model), and leads the adolescent groups. They are responsible for integrating programs and the community.
We then had the opportunity to talk with the three members of the mobile health team, Surekha, Madhu, and Amol. Surekha leads the girls’ group and womens’ groups. She screens for high risk pregnancies, and works alongside village health workers to counsel and ensure the health of villagers. One interesting tidbit was she taught women (and men) how the sex of a baby is decided (one chromosome from XX and one from XY). She shows the diagram and how the birth of a male child depends on the Y being passed from the father. In this way science can be used to remove stigma and violence against women when they give birth to female children. There is still serious gender discrimination in many areas in which women face abuse when they do not give birth to male children. The adolescent girls program is for girls ages 11-18. The program will have up to thirty girls from two villages (the villages must request CRHP to have an adolescent girls program) and meets every Sunday for six months. Girls learn about their bodies, changes they will experience during puberty, and the group also functions as a safe space to discuss gender discrimination and encourage young women to be independent. Surekha said about her work and the work of the MHT and VHWs, “It’s not important how many years you give, it’s important how you give.”
Madhu is a member of the MHT who had an interesting start to working for CRHP. He was always involved in the Young Farmer’s Club, which partners with CRHP, to learn and educate about farming practices and act as a farmer’s support group. Then one day in his village a mango truck crashed and all the mangos fell out. He helped organize villagers to clean up the mangoes as a CRHP van was driving by. The van pulled over to see what had happened, and during this time they told Madhu he should come work for them! Since then, Madhu has organized many young farmer’s clubs (YFC) in various villages. He used to help VHWs fill out forms and weigh babies because he can read and write. He leads programs on watershed development, organic farming, diabetes, and has led creative education efforts such as puppet shows and plays. He also leads the young boy’s group along with Amol, the third mobile health team member. Madhu said that since working for CRHP he has discovered his faith in humanity. “I find God in all human beings.”
Reflection: The CRHP has a unique approach to health in that they first go to the community and ask what the community needs. I looked up CRHP online and their website explains the mission as follows: “Drs. Raj and Mabelle Arole want to bring healthcare to the poorest of the poor, CRHP has become an organization that empowers people and communities to eliminate injustices through integrated efforts in health and development. CRHP works by mobilizing and building the capacity of communities to achieve access to comprehensive development and freedom from stigma, poverty, and disease.” The doctors believe that trust builds trust, thus they placed a great deal of trust in the communities they served that the communities had, and have, the capacity to achieve health and overall wellness. I found this day to be a good introduction to CRHP and all their roles. It is incredible to me how many facets of CRHP exist. They are indeed more than just health, they are committed to the overall wellness of the community. I was especially interested in how the communities have to come together to decide that they want from CRHP. This concept especially helps create a sustainable cycle in the community of addressing new needs. The community recognizes their strengths and ability to find change in themselves, and ultimately creates an environment of empowerment and action!

In a Democratic wave year, in a state where unemployment has finally fallen under 5 percent after one of the nation’s most brutal recessions, Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo sure sounds like she should be a shoe-in for a second term.
But she isn’t. In fact, Raimondo isn’t even guaranteed to get through her Democratic primary election on Wednesday. Though she has the backing of popular national Democrats including Joe Biden, she’s facing a challenge from former Rhode Island Secretary of State Matt Brown, backed by Bernie Sanders-inspired groups like Justice Democrats.
The progressive insurgency sweeping the nation is cresting in Rhode Island as well — a state with a peculiar brand of politics and a history of strong lefty showings in Democratic primaries. But unlike other places, where progressive victories have conveniently aligned with the party’s championing of women and candidates of color, the Rhode Island battle features a more throwback battle between a progressive white male candidate who seeks to unseat the state’s first woman governor.
“The toughest thing [Raimondo’s] gonna have to do is survive the primary,” Maureen Moakley, a political science professor at the University of Rhode Island, told me. “By running in the middle, she’s invited challengers.”
Raimondo appears to be divisive: 44 percent approval and 46 percent disapproval, according to the latest Morning Consult polling. We don’t really have any polling on the primary, but the progressive grassroots, based primarily in Providence, has a notable history of prevailing in Democratic primaries in Rhode Island. Moakley pointed to the party’s repeated nominations for Myrth York in the 1990s and early 2000s, who was well-liked by the grassroots but fell short in three straight elections against a Republican.
“We had 12 years of Republican governors, which appeared to be something of an anomaly,” Moakley said. “What it really was about was the Democratic Party. [Raimondo] is facing that kind of challenge.”
Raimondo sees herself as plenty progressive. She cites three times she raised the state’s minimum wage and outlines her plans for universal education, while warning against “this lazy narrative about progressive, not progressive.”
Perhaps the biggest thing hanging over her head in the primary is pension reform.
In her first term, Raimondo worked with the state legislature to eliminate cost-of-living increases and to move workers into retirement plans that resemble 401(k)s. Raimondo made the case that the state pension system would go bankrupt without the overhaul.
Her shepherding of the pension plan invited a challenge from the left in a year when the socialist-curious wing of the Democratic Party is particularly energized. Brown, who is taking up the progressive flag in Wednesday’s primary, is criticizing Raimondo’s administration in the strongest terms.
“Gov. Raimondo is probably the most extreme corporatist Democrat in the country,” Brown told me by phone. “Is the Democratic Party going to be the party of corporations and Wall Street — or is it going to be a party like it’s supposed to be, which is a party that works for the people?”
Raimondo, a former state treasurer who was elected Rhode Island’s first woman governor in 2014, inherited an economic mess. Governing magazine’s Dan Vock summarized the past 10 years of the state’s economy like this:
Rhode Island was one of the worst-hit states in the country during the 2007-2009 downturn, and it certainly fared worse than its New England neighbors. More manufacturing jobs disappeared. Housing prices collapsed. Governments laid off workers. Central Falls, a small city near Providence, filed for bankruptcy in 2011. And because Rhode Island’s economy sank further than those of other states, it also took longer to recover. By 2013, nearly 181,000 of Rhode Island’s roughly 1 million residents were receiving food stamps. Between 2014 and 2015, Rhode Island went nine months with the highest unemployment rate in the country.
Raimondo’s top priorities have been the state economy and reforming the state government. She has helped craft tax incentives for businesses to come to Rhode Island, expanded a small-business loans program, and toured the state touting new projects and new jobs. The unemployment rate was still above 8 percent in early 2014, as Raimondo launched her bid for governor. Now, near the end of her first term, it’s 4.3 percent.
“More than 10,000 Rhode Islanders are finally getting ahead and working because of our approach,” Raimondo told me in a phone interview. “So whether it’s Matt Brown or anyone else pledging to undo our economic development programs, that means Rhode Islanders are going to get hurt and a lot of people are going to lose their jobs.”
Brown has also criticized Raimondo for the disastrous launch of a new website that was supposed to help people sign up for government assistance but ended up “an epic failure,” according to Rhode Island Monthly, and resulted in a gap in some food and health benefits for lower-income residents.
“Many of those Rhode Islanders who went without health care and food assistance were single mothers,” he told me. “What one does in one life, one’s record and the policies one has for women, is critically important.”
Raimondo, while describing the website as “a project I inherited” because planning had begun before she was elected, concedes that “we launched the system too soon. I have acknowledged that as a big mistake. We’ve since turned the corner.”
Brown supports single-payer health care and wants to reverse Raimondo’s pension overhaul, but some in-state experts think his campaign promises are unrealistic. Raimondo’s pension reform was praised when it was first approved for averting a crisis while not raising taxes. Nearby Vermont failed horribly when it attempted to set up a state-level single-payer system. Brown told me one of the first things he’d do as governor is set up a commission to study the proposal.
“What I see across the state is that almost everyone agrees the system we have isn’t working for them,” Brown told me. “People know that we need to change those things, and they know Gov. Raimondo is part of that system and taking it to the extreme.”
The Republicans have their own primary on Wednesday: Cranston Mayor Allan Fung, who was the nominee in 2014 and narrowly lost to Raimondo, is the presumed frontrunner in his race against state Rep. Patricia Morgan and former state Sen. Giovanni Feroce. His platform is term limits for state lawmakers, tax cuts, and work requirements for welfare benefits.
The wild card is independent candidate Joseph Trillo, who is positioning himself as the Trumpiest candidate in a state where Donald Trump easily prevailed in the 2016 GOP primary. Any three-way split vote would presumably benefit the Democrats.
“There is a lot of support for Trump here, so of course that’s gonna split the Republican vote,” Moakley said.
However, the early polling suggests that the November general election isn’t a foregone conclusion, no matter who wins in the Democratic primary. A Fleming and Associates poll from late July found Raimondo at 39 percent and Fung at 37 percent, with Trillo taking 6 percent of the vote. The same survey showed Brown, if he were the Democratic nominee, trailing Fung by 15 points, 21 percent to 36 percent, with 30 percent of voters undecided.
Election forecasters do think that the Rhode Island governor’s race tilts toward the Democrats (Cook rates it Likely Democrat, while the University of Virginia’s Crystal Ball says the election merely leans toward Democrats).
But Rhode Island has had a rough 21st century, which has fostered a lot of discontent and distrust among the electorate and lent itself to unpredictable outcomes. Raimondo, a Rhodes scholar with a Yale law degree, more or less governed as the leader she promised to be. Wednesday’s primary will test whether that platform still sells.
“I’m not as focused on the labels and the narrative,” Raimondo said. “What I know is people are working. When I was running, we had the highest unemployment rate in America, and today, if you want a job, you can get a job.”

Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion Discussed and Exemplified
vrácení daní z Německa There is a very clear-minimize difference involving tax avoidance and tax evasion. 1 is lawfully appropriate and the other is an offense. However on the other hand a lot of consultants even in this nation do not understand the difference among tax avoidance and tax evasion. Most of the arranging elements that have been recommended by these consultants usually drop into the classification of tax evasion (which is illegal) and so tends to set purchasers into a dangerous scenario and also diminish the benefit of tax setting up. This might be one of the primary good reasons in which purchasers have lost faith in tax organizing consultants as most of them have usually recommended doubtful devices which are clearly underneath the class of tax evasion. In this chapter I provide some examples and scenario scientific tests (which includes authorized instances) of how tax evasion (frequently instructed by consultants purporting to be specialists in tax organizing) is undertaken not only in this region but in several sections of the entire world. It is accurate that many men and women do not like to pay their really hard-gained dollars to the authorities. Nevertheless undertaking this in an unlawful method such as by tax evasion is not the solution. Good tax preparing consists of tax avoidance or the reduction of the tax incidence. If this is accomplished correctly it can help you save substantial amounts of money in a legally acceptable way. This chapter also highlights some realistic illustrations and circumstance reports (which includes legal) of tax avoidance. Why Governments Want Your Taxes (Fundamental Economic Arguments) Income tax the largest supply of government funds nowadays in most countries is a comparatively modern invention, almost certainly since the idea of yearly cash flow is by itself a modern idea. Governments desired to tax points that have been straightforward to evaluate and on which it was thus uncomplicated to work out the legal responsibility. This is why early taxes concentrated on tangible things such as land and home, bodily goods, commodities and ships, as effectively as factors these kinds of as the range of home windows or fireplaces in a constructing. In the 20th century, especially the next half, governments around the planet took a developing share of their country's nationwide revenue in tax, mainly to pay out for ever more more expensive protection initiatives and for a present day welfare state. Oblique tax on intake, these as benefit-extra tax, has turn out to be ever more significant as immediate taxation on cash flow and wealth has turn out to be more and more unpopular. But huge discrepancies amid countries stay. 1 is the overall level of tax. For illustration, in United States tax profits quantities to about one-third of its GDP (gross domestic item), while in Sweden it is closer to half. Other folks are the favored procedures of accumulating it (immediate compared to oblique), the costs at which it is levied and the definition of the tax foundation to which these charges are used. Nations around the world have different attitudes to progressive and regressive taxation. There are also huge differences in the way accountability for taxation is divided amongst unique ranges of governing administration. Arguably according to the willpower of economics any tax is a terrible tax. But community products and other federal government functions have to be paid for somehow, and economists generally have powerful sights on which methods of taxation are additional or much less productive. Most economists agree that the very best tax is one particular that has as very little effect as feasible on people's conclusions about no matter whether to undertake a effective financial activity. Substantial rates of tax on labour could discourage individuals from functioning, and so end result in decreased tax profits than there would be if the tax amount ended up reduced, an concept captured in the Laffer curve in economics theory. Surely, the marginal charge of tax may possibly have a even larger outcome on incentives than the over-all tax burden. Land tax is regarded as the most economical by some economists and tax on expenditure by some others, as it does all the taking immediately after the wealth development is completed. Some economists favor a neutral tax system that does not impact the kinds of financial pursuits that get place. Other folks favor utilizing tax, and tax breaks, to tutorial financial exercise in approaches they favor, such as to minimize air pollution and to raise the attractiveness of utilizing persons relatively than cash. Some economists argue that the tax system really should be characterized by the two horizontal fairness and vertical equity, because this is fair, and due to the fact when the tax program is honest folks might come across it harder to justify tax evasion or avoidance. Even so, who ultimately pays (the tax incidence) may possibly be various from who is at first billed, if that man or woman can pass it on, say by adding the tax to the price tag he charges for his output. Taxes on businesses, for case in point, are often paid out in the conclude by people, be they employees, clients or shareholders. You really should be aware that taxation and its function in economics is a quite huge matter and this book does not tackle the difficulties of taxation and economics but somewhat tax planning to strengthen your economic posture. Nonetheless if you are intrigued in comprehending the position of taxation in economics you ought to seek the advice of a very good e book on economics which frequently talks about the impact of different forms of taxation on the financial routines of a nation of modern society. Tax Avoidance and Evasion Tax avoidance can be summed as performing every thing attainable in the legislation to minimize your tax bill. Discovered Hand, an American choose, after stated that there is absolutely nothing sinister in so arranging one's affairs as to hold taxes as low as achievable as no one owes any public obligation to spend much more than the legislation demands. On the other hand tax evasion can be outlined as paying less tax than you are lawfully obliged to. There might be a slender line between the two, but as Denis Healey, a previous British chancellor, when set it, "The variation among tax avoidance and tax evasion is the thickness of a prison wall." The courts understand the truth that no taxpayer is obliged to arrange his/her affairs so as to optimize the tax the governing administration receives. Persons and businesses are entitled to take all lawful methods to lessen their taxes. A taxpayer may possibly lawfully set up her affairs to minimize taxes by this kind of techniques as deferring revenue from just one yr to the upcoming. It is lawful to get all accessible tax deductions. It is also lawful to steer clear of taxes by producing charitable contributions. Tax evasion, on the other hand, is a criminal offense. Tax evasion normally consists of failing to report income, or improperly declaring deductions that are not approved. Examples of tax evasion contain this kind of actions as when a contractor "forgets" to report the LKR one, 000,000 funds he receives for making a pool, or when a enterprise operator attempts to deduct LKR 1, 000,000 of individual charges from his business taxes, or when a man or woman falsely statements she designed charitable contributions, or drastically overestimates the worth of house donated to charity. Similarly, if an estate is well worth LKR 5,000,000 and the executor documents a false tax return, improperly omitting home and proclaiming the estate is only worthy of LKR 100,000, hence owing significantly considerably less in taxes. Tax evasion has an impression on our tax process. It will cause a major reduction of earnings to the local community that could be utilized for funding improvements in wellness, education, and other govt systems. Tax evasion also makes it possible for some companies to gain an unfair gain in a aggressive market and some persons to not fulfill their tax obligations. As a consequence, the burden of tax not paid by those who select to evade tax falls on other legislation abiding taxpayers. Illustrations of tax evasion are: ï?~ Failing to declare assessable profits ï?~ Declaring deductions for expenses that were being not incurred or are not lawfully deductible ï?~ Claiming input credits for products that Worth Added Tax (VAT)has not been compensated on ï?~ Failing to fork out the PAYE (fork out as you earn a type of with keeping tax)installments that have been deducted from a payment, for illustration tax taken out of a worker's wages ï?~ Failing to lodge tax returns in an endeavor to keep away from payment. The adhering to are some signs that a particular person or small business might be evading tax: ï?~ Not being registered for VAT even with obviously exceeding the threshold ï?~ Not charging VAT at the right amount ï?~ Not seeking to situation a receipt ï?~ Giving wrong invoices ï?~ Employing a false enterprise identify, deal with, or taxpayers identification variety (TIN) and VAT registration quantity ï?~ Keeping two sets of accounts, and ï?~ Not supplying staff members with payment summaries Lawful Elements of Tax Avoidance and Tax Evasion Two normal factors can be manufactured about tax avoidance and evasion. Initially, tax avoidance or evasion takes place across the tax spectrum and is not peculiar to any tax variety these kinds of as import taxes, stamp responsibilities, VAT, PAYE and revenue tax. Secondly, laws that addresses avoidance or evasion need to always be imprecise. No prescriptive set of principles exists for figuring out when a distinct arrangement amounts to tax avoidance or evasion. This lack of precision results in uncertainty and adds to compliance costs equally to the Section of Inland Earnings and the tax payer.

Bajan Newscap 7/14/2017
Good Morning #realdreamchasers. Here is your daily news cap for Friday July 14th 2017. There is a lot to read and digest so take your time. Remember you can read full articles via Barbados Today ((BT), or by purchasing a Weekend Newspaper (WN).
IT’S BLACKMAIL – PRIME MINISTER Freundel Stuart has given a strong hint of a legislative response to any industrial action by trade unions that might shut down Barbados. Speaking to the media at Accra Beach Hotel today, the Prime Minister said Section 48 of the Constitution of Barbados “makes very clear that Parliament can make laws for the peace, the order and the good government of Barbados” as he observed there was a “new wine of industrial relations which we are being asked to drink” in a new style of trade unionism he characterised as “bluster, bullying and blackmail.” “We have relied on the maturity, the conscientiousness the civic-minded ness and the goodwill of our trade union leaders to manage this process and it has worked very, very well for us over the years.” The Prime Minister said “what I now have to do, since I have deliberately allowed Barbadians to see what is possible if you allow elements that have no respect for process… (is) to take control of the national situation in the industrial relations arena.” (WN)
CHARGED UP – Employers and the labour movement are discussing an unusual marriage that could result in support from the private sector for any decision by the unions to shut down the country over the increasingly vexing National Social Responsibility Levy. Both sides have expressed dissatisfaction with the burdensome tax, which increased from two per cent to ten per cent effective July 1, and they are looking to force the Freundel Stuart administration’s hands on the matter. The Barbados Private Sector Association (BPSA) and union leaders met yesterday to discuss the austerity measures announced by Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler in the May 30 Financial Statement and Budgetary Proposals, after which BPSA Chairman Charles Herbert said both sides were unhappy with the absence of dialogue between Government and its Social Partners “over our financial problem and the Budget”. Herbert disclosed little about the meeting, but said the umbrella agency of private sector organizations would meet with its membership today and tomorrow to finalize its position. When contacted President of the Barbados Chamber of Commerce and Industry Eddy Abed and outgoing Executive Director of the Barbados Employers’ Confederation Tony Walcott refused to comment on the matter, stating the BPSA was leading the charge. Following a march on Tuesday from Queen’s Park to Independence Square, after which they failed in their attempt to hand-deliver a letter to Stuart, the Barbados Secondary Teachers’ Union (BSTU), the Barbados Union of Teachers (BUT), the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) and the National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) gave the Prime Minister 48 hours to respond positively to their demands to reduce the NSRL by 50 per cent, or provide workers with a coping subsidy. Failing this, the unions threatened to “up de ting”, generally interpreted to mean a national shutdown. The ultimatum expired today and up until the time of publication, there had been no signs of movement by Government or word on the next steps by the unions. (BT)
BLAME STUART! - An Opposition Barbados Labour Party (BLP) stalwart has defended this country’s trade unions and the current leadership of the BLP, following criticisms levelled against them by former Prime Minister Owen Arthur. However, in light of Arthur’s criticism of Mottley’s failed attempt to deliver a letter to Stuart at his Bay Street office back in 2014 at the end of a so-called “White March” against the imposition of a solid waste tax, Sir Richard, who served in the Adams Cabinet from 1981 to 1985 and later under Bernard St John and Arthur, before quitting active politics in 2003, explained that it was possible for a prime minister to leave a Cabinet meeting to accommodate such requests. He was equally adamant that this country’s workers could not be ignored while suggesting that Stuart “might have missed the hour” when he reportedly refused to entertain the four trade union leaders when they showed up at Parliament for an audience for him last Tuesday, an allegation the Prime Minister has since denied. While insisting that Stuart should have made time for the workers’ representatives, Sir Richard also argued that any disrespect being shown was not for the Office of Prime Minister, but to Stuart himself and the way in which he was discharging his duties as head of Government. With the said, Sir Richard deemed it “significant” that Arthur had not made mention of former Prime Minister Erskine Sandiford (now Sir Lloyd), who, like Stuart, “was in charge at a very difficult time” and in Sir Richard’s estimation was also held “in very low regard”. In terms of the stepped up militancy by the trade unions Sir Richard said: “If the unions are to maintain the loyalty of their members, they must be seen to be agitating for some sort of benefit for them. Because after all, it is eight years since they have not had an increase [in pay]. The cost of living has gone up, things have gone up, it is very rough in the country so the union has to be seen to be doing its utmost to retain the commitment of its members.” He also pointed out that across the world membership in trade unions had declined significantly with “people working at home now and [with the emergence of] all sorts of work [such] that people don’t need unions again. With the threat of national shutdown currenlty hanging over the country, he also cautioned that the island’s problems were more fundamental than “a withholding of labour in the public sector for a day”.
However, the BLP stalwart was of the view that “a change of Government, as happened when the Sandiford administration went out of office . . . will lead to an almost dramatic restoration of confidence in Barbados, both at home and abroad. And that would be the atmosphere in which, with the right measures, and given as period of about two years, we may be able to effect a turnaround in this economy”. Sir Richard, who is one the two trustees of the BLP and a member of the Opposition party’s National Council, emphasized that while the confidence factor was not easily quantifiable it was critically important because “foreign investors will come who have an interest of Barbados . . . and locals who have so many millions in the bank will feel free to spend money”. (BT)
ENDING SEGREGATION – Minister of Education Ronald Jones has revealed that Government chose to shut down Alma Parris Memorial School to end the isolation of the 60 students attending the 22-year-old institution. The Speightstown-based remedial school, which catered to students who did not do well in the Barbados Secondary Schools Entrance Examination (BSSEE) – otherwise called the Common Entrance Exam or 11-plus – closed for good at the end of the last school year. According to Jones 25 students between the ages of 12 and 16 were relocated to Daryl Jordan Secondary School, 23 or 24 to Grantley Adams Secondary School, and an undisclosed number to St George Secondary School. Those over the age of 16 were being placed in vocational training programmes. Although resigned to the fact that the school would be no more, several parents had complained about the manner in which the closure was handled, while some were worried that their children would not be able to keep up with their new curricula. However, Jones said the Alma Parris students would stand a better chance of learning alongside students with stronger academic skills. As for the old school plant, Jones suggested the Barbados Vocational Training Board would likely utilize it. Meantime, Jones announced that come the new school year in September, there would be a new education management informational system in place in all primary and secondary schools here. It will replace the abusSTAR system, which was designed to make it easier for ministries of education across the region to provide accurate and timely reports on school and student performances. The revelation came in the wake of the failure of several schools to issue end of term reports to students at the end of the school year on July 6 because the technology failed. The minister said the new system would be “more sophisticated and advanced, yet user friendly”. While the AbusSTAR system was designed for Caribbean schools, Jones said the Ministry of Education was considering “and we will know shortly, a customized system built by Barbadians”. (BT)
DOC: BIRTH RATE NOT IDEAL – Minister of Education Ronald Jones may have a point after all. Jones’ repeated calls for Barbadian families to have more children to help counter the effects on national productivity of the ageing population might be more than just hot air, as statistics have revealed that the current fertility rate of 1.7 is below the ideal number of 2.1. That number is also significantly lower than the average of 4.42 births per woman which was recorded in Barbados during the 1950s. This was revealed by associate director of clinical medical services at the Barbados Family Planning Association (BFPA) Dr Shanae Gill, during a media briefing at United Nations House yesterday, as part of activities to mark World Population Day. (WN)
BARP HEAD AGREES BAJANS NEED TO HAVE MORE CHILDREN - President of the Barbados Association of Retired Persons (BARP) Edward Bushell is in full agreement that Barbadians need to reproduce more to combat the declining birthrate, and he says Government may have to offer incentives to get people to have more children. He made that call this week as he noted that a declining birth rate is a universal problem, and suggested that the Freundel Stuart administration should learn from developed countries such as France, Germany and Italy that are addressing the issue. Bushell agreed with Minister of Education Ronald Jones who came under fire in June when, pointing out the huge decline in the number of students writing the Barbados Secondary Schools’ Entrance Examination this year, he argued that Barbadians needed to have more children. Bushell echoed Jones’ warning, saying that the falloff in births was not an issue for his organization only, but a national one. He noted that by 2025, there would be more people over 65 than under 16, which would have implications for the National Insurance Scheme since there would be fewer young people making contributions. Bushell said something therefore needed to be done urgently. “Barbados is an aging society and eventually the number of people over 67 in proportion to those under 67 is going to change dramatically,” he said. (BT)
ALCOHOL ABUSE NO JOKE – With several songs over the last few Crop Over seasons seemingly glorifying excessive alcohol consumption, one drug treatment centre has urged Barbadians to take the issue of alcohol abuse more seriously. Director of Clinical Services at Marina House Angela Sealy said while alcoholic beverage manufacturers often urge consumers to “drink responsibly”, people must be aware of their own limits. Sealy was also concerned about parents introducing their children to alcohol, unwittingly or otherwise. Meanwhile, a representative from Alcoholics Anonymous said he could not determine whether that organization was seeing a greater number of clients. However, he stressed that it was “not in the business of stopping people from drinking alcohol”. (BT)
EASE ON DRUGS – THE BARBADOS DRUG SERVICE has been spared the increase in the National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL). As a result, Barbadians are in line to save some much-needed dollars, with some drug prices likely to return to levels before July 1, when some pharmacies raised their prices on the day the new NSRL rate took effect. The Ministry of Finance has waived the increase from two to eight per cent on pharmaceuticals issued by the Barbados Drug Service. A letter from the Ministry of Finance, dated July 11, 2017, and addressed to the Ministry of Health, revealed that a request for the waiver of the NSRL increase had been granted. (WN)
CHICKEN PRICES NOT RISING YET – Local chicken producers and some restaurants that have chicken as the main item on their menu are not planning to increase their prices immediately. Manager at Star Chick, Wendell Clarke said based on discussion at the last internal management meeting, the company was still working out how it would respond to the controversial National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL). “We have some factors, one or two things gone up, one gone down and one gone cross, so we are trying to get our train together to see if we get a hybrid to make a decision by Friday,” Clarke said. Meanwhile, the managing director of the island’s largest fast-food chain, Chefette, Ryan Haloute, said it was holding its prices and would continue to do so. (WN)
GODDARD ENTERPRISES BUYS OUT MARSHALL TRADING - GODDARD ENTERPRISES LIMITED (GEL) has signed an agreement with Art Holdings Inc. (Art Holdings) to acquire 100 per cent of the shares in Marshall Trading Limited (Marshall Trading), a subsidiary of Art Holdings. The agreement took effect from June 30, 2017. However, the complete transfer process should be concluded in three months’ time, though the company will now fall under the guidance of GEL following the signing of the Share Purchase Agreement by directors representing both parties. According to Marshall Trading director Hugh Blades, the company sees GEL as the “perfect fit to take the Marshall Trading brand to new levels of growth and competitiveness based on the synergies they can bring to the business through their regional hardware business”. Managing director and CEO of GEL, Anthony Ali, said that it is the company’s intention to continue the Marshall Trading operation with the full complement of staff. General manager Philip Mayers will remain at the helm working with the new owners to take the company forward. GEL has been involved in the building supplies industry for more than fifty years in St Lucia and St Vincent and the Grenadines, and also in Grenada for more than a decade. The addition of Marshall Trading to the GEL Automotive, Building Supplies and Services Division headed by Ian Alleyne, bears out the Group’s strategy to focus on areas core to its business and bring value to its shareholders and employees, and the twenty-two countries in which it operates. (WN)
BANKS RESUME $200 MILLION IN REAL ESTATE TRANSACTIONS – Commercial banks here have resumed real estate-related transactions after some of their concerns relating to the issuance of tax clearance certificates were addressed by the state’s revenue collection agency. However, the lending institutions said some troublesome matters continued to worry the real estate industry. The bankers had said in late May that they had suspended over 300 real estate-related transactions estimated at $211 million due to a “lack of clarity” on the processes involved in the issuance of tax clearance certificates by the Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA). And President of the Barbados Bankers’ Association (BBA) Donna Wellington had warned that until there was clarification, the financial institutions would not be in a position to close any real estate-related transactions or disburse monies associated with those deals. Under the amended Barbados Revenue Authority Act, individuals and corporations are required to be fully paid up to all branches of the state before being able to obtain a tax clearance certificate, which is needed to conduct real estate transactions, among other business. The bankers were concerned the measure would hamper their ability to recover mortgages if a borrower who defaulted or attempted to sell owed taxes. With banks already having binding contracts with those clients, the current situation is proving to be an additional risk to the banks’ mortgage portfolios. President of the Barbados Estate Agents and Valuers Association Paul Alleyne, who last month expressed concern that the hold up could send the sector back into recession, told Barbados TODAYwhile he welcomed any movement, the continued lack of clarity in some instances was “not good for the industry”. (BT)
TAXI OPERATORS FEELING THE PINCH – The vexing National Social Responsibility Levy (NSRL), along with increases in petrol prices, is hitting taxi operators in Bridgetown where it hurts most – in their pockets. Several taxi drivers spoke to Barbados TODAY this week on condition that their given names not be used. They described a tale of woe stemming from the steep hike in the NSRL from two per cent to ten per cent and increases in the excise duty on petrol. They said they had already been struggling, and their ability to make a living took a further hit with the Government-imposed taxes and levies, which took effect on July 1. To emphasize the difficulty they were having in attracting business, one driver explained he had been on the job since 8 a.m. and had not had a single fare six hours later. Several of them said they had similar experiences. The drivers said the high number of vehicles operating from the Bridgetown stand contributed in part to their difficulty in attracting work. However, they left no doubt about the impact of the taxes. The operators also said the NSRL had done more than just affect their normal fares. One driver who wanted to be referred to as Tall Man said he had begun to seek financing to replace his aging car before Minister of Finance Chris Sinckler announced the measures. He told Barbados TODAY the cost of the vehicle climbed by $16,000 after the Budget measures took effect, throwing the proverbial spanner in the works. Operators are allowed by law to purchase a taxi duty-free every five years. However, the taxi drivers are crying foul over the requirement that they must purchase a replacement vehicle before they are allowed to sell the one in use. It was a concern shared by Opposition Leader Mia Mottley who had been meeting with the taxi drivers. Despite the additional burdens brought on by the new budgetary measures, the operators who spoke to Barbados TODAY said they were not planning to raise fares because they are aware it was tough for everyone. (BT)
HELP US! UPSET KENSINGTON LODGE RESIDENTS COMPLAIN OF HARSH LIVING CONDITIONS - Fuming and frustrated residents of Government housing units in Kensington Lodge, The City say they are in desperate need of help, as they face a wide range of potentially dangerous problems in their homes and community. They say they have been neglected and left to contend with garbage pile-ups, overgrown bush, and homes that are falling apart in some cases, and have received no assistance from the National Housing Corporation (NHC) or other relevant authorities despite their cries for help. When Barbados TODAY visited the area, residents registered their frustration in profanity-laced complaints about what they said were substandard living conditions. Audrey Miller, 69, was the most vocal, saying that while other suffering residents were afraid to speak out, she would make her voice heard, since “this is my democratic right and I living through it! She said she had contacted Chairman of the National Assistance Board Senator David Durant for assistance as well, since there were several elderly residents who were facing hardship, but to no avail. Miller, who has been living in Kensington Lodge for the last 36 years, claimed garbage collection was as infrequent as every three to four months. Miller said that recognizing the potential health and safety hazard, residents previously came together and cleaned the area. However, she said, the shed in which they housed the equipment and materials for the cleanup was subsequently dismantled by law enforcement officials. Another one of the neighbours, who did not want to be named, was incensed by the police action. “We out here are trying to keep the place clean and get rid of the rats and them ain’t helping we, but them lick down we shed . . . .You feel that is right?” the resident said. Miller also alleged that one of her neighbours was dealt a slap in the face when workers from the NHC cleaned the woman’s septic tank and buried the contents next to her home. She also complained about the poor state of some units which have leaky roofs and are in a general state of disrepair. One other resident took the Barbados TODAY team to one of the blocks to point out the steps leading up to the units were waterlogged, and their steel supports exposed. Miller said that although the authorities had announced that residents would get ownership of the units, they were yet to receive the legal papers to confirm the transfer. Therefore, she argued, Government still had responsibility for the upkeep of the units and had so far failed miserably in that regard. The resident said neither Member of Parliament Lieutenant Colonel Jeffrey Bostic of the Opposition Barbados Labour Party nor his predecessor, Patrick Todd of the ruling Democratic Labour Party (DLP) had been able to get them any relief. Her neighbour, Edwards, scoffed when asked about Todd’s representation under the DLP administration. “I did living out here from 1985 . . . all the DLP do is stop me from paying rent. I ain’t got no house cause I ain’t got nutting that I could go in a bank and say, ‘look, I want six doors. I want you lend me some money and I going pay you back at least $100 a month to get these six doors,’” she complained. (BT)

POLICE OFFICER GETS BAIL ON RAPE CHARGE - A police constable appeared in court Thursday charged with rape, and was released on $5,000 bail. When Constable Welch appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Criminal Court, he was not required to plead to the indictable offence of having unlawful sexual intercourse with the complainant without her consent on February 11, 2017. In a departure from the usual practice, police did not allow reporters to see the charge sheet to get the full name and address of the accused. Prosecutor Glenda Carter-Nicholls did not object to bail for the officer. He is required to return to court on October 19, 2017. (BT)
$10,000 BAIL ON DRUG CHARGES – A White Hall, St Michael man was placed on $10,000 bail when he appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Criminal Court’ charged with multiple drug possession offences. Recko Antonio Joseph is charged with possession of cannabis, possession of the drug with intent to supply, trafficking the drug, and cultivating it. He pleaded not guilty to all charges and Prosecutor Sergeant Glenda Carter-Nicholls had no objection to bail. However, she ordered that Joseph report to the District ‘A’ Police Station by noon every Wednesday as a condition of his release. (BT)
REQUEST GRANTED – A self-proclaimed drug addict was remanded to the Psychiatric Hospital for evaluation at his own request, after appearing in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Criminal Court on multiple theft charges. Jerome O’Bryan Rudder of 4th Avenue Mannings Land, Bank Hall, St Michael is accused of entering the dwelling of Cheryl Ramsey on July 3, 2017 and stealing a game console, a laptop, a t-shirt, a watch, two bracelets and a game disc, with an estimated combined value of $2,650. He was also charged with entering Michelle’s Grill and Fried Fish as a trespasser on July 18, 2017, and stealing items valued at $1,260. Rudder, who was out on bail on similar charges, pleaded not guilty to the charges. Prosecutor Sergeant Glenda Carter-Nicholls objected to him being released, pointing out that that his previous surety was no longer willing to stand bail. “Ma’am, we have heard his surety say that he is not behaving himself and we have to protect him [the accused] from himself, as well as protect the society,” Carter-Nicholls said. But in his submission, Rudder pleaded with Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant not to remand him to prison. “I was smoking crack cocaine and I ask the court to give me a chance. I never [went] to jail and I don’t want to go there; I just want a chance. I don’t want to stress my mother no more because she does do anything for me,” he begged. The magistrate granted the accused’s request that he not be sent to jail, and instead remanded him to the Psychiatric Hospital to participate in the drug programme there. (BT)
TEXT LANDS CONDUCTOR IN HOT WATER – The next time Tony Antonio Seon Smith sees a text message that he does not like, he will have a $900 reminder to keep his cool. Smith, of Murray Land, Clevedale Road, Black Rock, St Michael, pleaded guilty to assaulting Dionne Daniel, occasioning her actual bodily harm, on July 12. The 29-year-old conductor appeared before Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant in the No. 2 District ‘A’ Criminal Court Thursday morning. Outlining the details of the case, Prosecutor Sergeant Cameron Gibbons told the court that the accused and the complainant are in a relationship and live in the same house. Yesterday, Smith saw a text message in the complainant’s phone and choked her and dragged her, by the hair, through the house. He also smashed her phone against the wall and put her belongings outside, the Prosecutor said. Although Smith pleaded guilty to the charge, Daniel, told the court she only was interested in being compensated for the phone and her injuries. Cuffy-Sargeant subsequently ordered Smith to pay Daniel $500 for the phone, $200 for the injuries he caused, and a further $200 to the court, all to be paid by September 13. (BT)
CASE AGAINST BISHOP DISMISSED – The leader of the Roman Catholic Church in Barbados, Bishop Jason Gordon, no longer has an assault charge hanging over his head. Magistrate Kristie Cuffy-Sargeant today dismissed the case brought by Junior Blackman last December after the 41-year-old altar server voluntarily indicated that he was no longer interested in pursuing the matter. When the case first came up for hearing in the District ‘A’ Magistrates’ Court back in March, Trinidad-born Gordon had pleaded not guilty to the assault charge and was granted $3,000 bail. Today, the Bishop’s attorney, Sir Richard Cheltenham, QC, appeared with Shelly Seecharan. Sir Richard said he was “indebted to the informant for taking the high road in this matter and not offering any evidence”. Sir Richard also noted that both the Bishop and Blackman “had dedicated their lives to the service of the Catholic Church and for them the Church’s welfare was the paramount concern. “In that context they met and in a spirit of brotherly love, they have reconciled and agreed to work together in the continuation of the Church’s important work,” Sir Richard said, while thanking Blackman’s attorney Vonda Pile for her cooperation and support in the matter. On this basis, Cuffy-Sargeant dismissed the case. (BT)
JET ENGINE BLAST KILLS WOMAN - A New Zealand woman has died on the Caribbean territory of St Maarten after the blast from a powerful jet engine knocked her to the ground. The incident happened at the famous Princess Juliana International Airport, which is just metres from the beach. Beachgoers can walk up to the airport fence as planes take off. Police said the 57-year-old woman had been holding on to the fence before the force of the jet engines threw her backwards, causing serious injury. She was taken to hospital for treatment, but died later. The particular stretch of beach on the Dutch territory is popular with tourists, partly because the planes fly extremely low over the sand before landing. The beginning of the runway is just 50m (160ft) from the fence on Maho beach, and about the same distance to the waterline. There are prominent warning signs in the area instructing beachgoers not to stand near the fence because of the dangerous air blasts. Despite the danger, a number of videos circulating online show tourists clinging to the fence to prevent being swept away – and in some cases, almost being lifted off the ground. The island’s tourism director, Rolando Brison, told the New Zealand Herald he had spoken to the family of the dead woman. In a statement, Sint Maarten police said they visit the area daily to discourage tourists from clinging to the runway fence. (BT)
AGE ISSUE WITH UNDER-15 CRICKET TEAM MEMBER RESOLVED – A discrepancy related to the age of one of the selected players for the national Under-15 cricket team has been spotted, avoiding what could have resulted in massive embarrassment for host country Barbados. Investigations by WEEKENDSPORT reveal that Kobe Hoyte of the Grantley Adams Memorial School has been withdrawn from the 14-member squad originally selected for the 50-over One-Day tournament, which runs from July 26 to August 4. He has been replaced by fellow all-rounder Jakeem Forde of Christ Church Foundation. It is understood that whereas Hoyte’s birth certificate shows that he was born in 2001 but his national identification card has his birth year listed as 2002. (WN)
LESTER VAUHAN SPORTS SUCCESS – LESTER VAUGHAN’S reputation on the track is spilling over to other sports. The Cane Garden, St Thomas school recently celebrated their capture of the Under-16 boys’ and girls’ volleyball titles and the Under-15 netball league. “It is due to a very strong physical education programme that the school offers. Due to our strong education programme most of our kids are very strong as it relates to the basic fundamentals for various sporting disciplines,” physical education teacher Khismar Catlin told WEEKENDSPORT. “Our programme works at laying the core principles, the foundation or focusing on the basics of specific sporting disciplines. It makes our job a lot easier when it is transferred into the extracurricular activity.” (WN)
GEMS SPARK NOT AS BRIGHT – THE BAJAN GEMS’ best bet at the Netball World Youth Cup in Gaborone is 12th after they were defeated 54-48 by Samoa yesterday. The Gems were seventh at the last edition in Scotland. After beating Singapore on Wednesday they were expected to face Scotland’s in the battle for positions 9-16. However, the Scots, who the Gems had easily defeated in a practice match here waltzed past Samoa to sneak into the quarter-finals leaving the Gems with a match-up with the South Pacific nation. (WN)
NICHOLLS AFTER POST OF BCA SECRETARY – Four years after opting not to seek re-election as secretary of the Barbados Cricket Association (BCA), Gregory Nicholls is throwing his hat into the race again. The 42-year-old attorney, who served as secretary between 2007 and 2013, will be vying for the same position when a new board – which will be reduced from 14 members to nine – is elected during the 15th special meeting of members on July 27. “My interest in cricket has never waned. Over the last four years, a number of members of the association have been beckoning me to return to the board. Each year that reaching out to me has been stronger and stronger,” Nicholls told WEEKENDSPORT. (WN)
VENUS STORMS INTO WIMBLEDON FINAL – Venus Williams became the oldest woman in 23 years to reach a Wimbledon final as she defied her age and a despondent home crowd to inflict a crushing defeat on British hope Johanna Konta Thursday. Eight years after her last Wimbledon final and more than two decades since Martina Navratilova became the last 37-year-old to reach the same stage, Williams produced the sort of attacking performance that led her to five titles in her heydey. Her 6-4 6-2 semi-final win over the Briton was a clinical execution and set up a Saturday showdown with Garbine Muguruza, whose own ruthless demolition of Magdalena Rybarikova whetted the appetite for an intriguing final. It will be Williams’s ninth at Wimbledon and the stage for a potential eighth grand slam crown and having defied the odds to reach this point, few would now bet against her. (BT)
FOUR DESIGNERS HAVE SHOT AT CAR - Only four designers are in with a shot at winning that prize of a new car at stake for Kadooment masqueraders in this year’s Crop Over competition. The car, a Mazda 2 valued at $68 000, is being offered by the National Cultural Foundation and MQI to the Best Festival Designer (the Robert Weekes Award), along with $7 500 cash. Those eligible are Kevin Small of Fifth Element, Mackie Holder of Wednesday 2000, Gwyneth Squires of the Gwyneth Squires Band and Marlon Brewster of Jump Promotions. The rules state that the prize for the Best Festival Designer will be judged over two competitions – Junior and Grand Kadooment, which means only those designers with bands in both competitions will be eligible for the award. FESTIVAL BLUES FOR SOME JUNIORS – A number of youngsters would love to participate in the Scotiabank Junior Monarch competition but sometimes find themselves without songs. That’s because of broken promises by some songwriters, including teachers. This situation often leaves the children broken and in tears. Mentors of the children said some of them were promised material but were held to ransom because of non-payment. The NCF’s external coordinator, Anthony Sargeant, said, however, that the practice was happening less now than before. (WN)
