also also I know everyone likes to talk about how good of an archon Venti is because he left mondstadt to do its own thing and hey look Zhongli's doing the same now with his retirement but I also like how the story shows it isn't without flaws, with so much freedom in the city it's all too easy to take control with power, Mondstadt's people may be free but they also don't have a god to actually uphold the ideal they stand for and how personal freedoms conflict, discrimination(eg. against Eula and her clan) is allowed because the people are free to do whatever they want, the fatui really wormed their way into mondstadt during the webtoon + nearly did with Davalin bc the people of mondstadt do whatever they want so Jean is overworked and the knights are ineffective(according to Diluc), and how mondstadt might have been the least free place for the common people during the Lawrences rule despite being the region governed by the archon of freedom

Zhongli at least first tested his people were ready before retiring, Venti kinda acended, organized a bunch of celebrations for his people, then left them to have fun with their newfound freedom only interveining when things get really bad

wait i had a whole rant about this i didn’t tag the other day because again, there’s just so few indigenous people in the rtv fandom i don’t love the idea of talking about something as controversial as pretendians but it’s been gaining traction on twitter and…..like if you want My Opinion As Someone With Indigenous Heritage i think brooklyn has a lot of red flags that are typically associated with people lying about indigenous heritage whether it was a family story she just never looked into or a lie she concocted herself. At the same time, I don’t love the idea of a bunch of people who are not Indigenous weighing in on Brooklyn’s background because there’s been several high profile “pretendian hunters” who went after people who ARE indigenous but are basically not The Right Kind Of Indigenous and it’s been a massive issue in the community and I feel like if I start saying “i think brooklyn might be lying about being apache and cherokee” that’s going to help open the door for some really racist discourse especially if she IS just part of that Not The Right Kind Of Indigenous group.

ooh that’s a good question! I don’t think it would change much in the grand scheme of things, maybe mainly how C-Side think of themselves and Ichiya. It would definitely inflate C-Side’s egos more. They stuck around in their home region and have stayed together for over a decade, while Ichiya ran off to Inkopolis and his band broke up rather quickly. The strong survive, the weak stay weak. With Beika’s (and the others’, assumedly) distaste towards Inkopolis, they’d definitely consider themselves stronger (and thus more important) than him. Just another way of proving to themselves that they’re better than Ichiya/Squid Squad.

So the other day I was discussing the title of my novel with my grandparents. I mentioned the idea of having it centering around the idea of “the house” without managing to find any phrasing to my liking.

My grandfather half-jokingly proposed “why don’t you called it The widow’s [local Occitan word for a small house]?”. I asked him what it meant, he answered “house”. I asked him if it was a big house and he told me no. Then he told me I could use the word “castèl” for a very big house with towers (as you might have guessed, it means castle).

After that the conversation naturally went toward Occitan and I said that I would like to learn to speak it at least a little. He then once again half-jokingly told me that it was a shame that I never met his father because he would have been able to teach me (since it was his mother tongue).

On this my grandmother thought it was imperative to comment that my great-grandfather actually did not speak Occitan but [local Occitan dialect] which was just a patois. Patois (sort of synonym to dialect) is a pretty derogatory word to talk about regional languages in France. I answered to her that since Occitan did not go through the same standardization as French did during the 19th century, [local Occitan dialect] is in fact Occitan and a totally accepted version of Occitan by the institutions trying to safeguard the language. [local Occitan dialect] is not just a subpar language but a legitimate way of speaking Occitan. We did not debate further but it was pretty obvious that she wasn’t completely convinced and that for her my great-grandfather did not speak proper Occitan (which she considers to be a “proper” language) but just a patois.

My grandmother is pretty well-educated and keeps herself up to date on a lot of subjects. So I am amazed that apparently she still considers our own regional language as nothing more than a mere patois despite obviously having heard and internalized a lot of the deconstruction of French hegemonic cultural significance in all of France (otherwise she would not even consider Occitan to be a proper language). Like damn, this thing runs deep.
