I was thinking of your Roleswap AU and at first I was confused over Capt. Anya just calling Curly, "Nurse." But then it embarrassingly just occurred to me "Oh duh she's just being professional." And it fits her given how canon!Anya insists on calling Curly "Captain" even though he keeps telling her that she can call him by his name. It's a nice way of tying their characters back to their canon counterparts and showing how Capt. Anya is different from Capt. Curly and how Nurse Curly is different from Nurse Anya.

All of that to say: I just imagined Nurse Curly, still having that "I want everyone to get along here :)" attitude (plus the crushing) once tries to tell Capt. Anya that she can call him Curly and immediately freaks out over potentially overstepping a boundary with his superior.

well spotted :) i talk about it here a bit already, but yeah the main point is that Anya is acutely aware of her position and the various power dynamics she has to partake in. as such, she is somewhat paranoid and prone to over-analysing interactions and trying to dissect them to figure out if any boundaries were overstepped in either direction.

so, hyperaware as she is, she can't not notice Something from Curly's side. when she alludes to it in some way, Curly freaks out (because the last thing he wants is to make her feel like he's pushing her into anything) and in his course-correction swerves all the way into inventing a girlfriend as sort of a shield for Anya, some proof that he isn't after her in any way. Anya, of course, knows that having girlfriends doesn't always stop people from doing what they want, but Curly is nice and kind and they're good friends and she really doesn't want to be afraid of him, so she does her best to take him at face value even when the math doesn't seem to math terribly well.

as for titles: in general the crew is on first name/nickname basis with each other. the exception is Anya, who is always(?) addressed as 'Captain' by Curly and Daisuke before the crash, and 50/50 name/title by Swansea and Jimmy when they want to make some kind of a point. she, in turn, tends to address everyone by name unless she is deliberately putting professional distance between herself and the other.

who is iburen i love him did you start tgis.

We were in the vc where it originated, yes. We're not The One Responsible but we've been involved from the beginning. I'm not going to use the unreality tag on this post because I'm being very open about the true nature of the character here. But anyway here's a summary of what he's about and the general canon.

Iburen is a goncharov-type character for ISAT. He's a paper type jester who uses he/it/they pronouns and is absolutely devoted to the King. They speak in a very relaxed, casual way generally: "hey man, even if none of them understand I've got you, all right?" (Iburen is the #1 King apologist.)

It's originally from the island, and was very close to the King pre-retcon. Sometime after the retcon, he made a wish to recover something, anything important from the past he had forgotten, and through that it remembered just how much it loved and cared about the King. With that being the one and only part of their past they remembered, it quickly cemented itself as the center of their motivations—they would do anything for him, and they're willing to support him in any endeavor no matter what it is. It does not turn against him even, say, at the end of kingquest.

Allegedy, they're a secondary antagonist in ISAT who gives support to the King during that fight. We (the group) never explicitly decided on the canon of that, but general agreement was that he probably mainly gives the King stat buffs.

We (the system) were pushing for its ultimate fate to be frozen alongside the King, but what was eventually decided was that it is NOT frozen and cries about the King so much during act 6 before being taken into custody by the House. Or, possibly, escaping to be a future antagonist. Or even both in that order.

After several proposed designs and a vote, Iburen's official design is this one by @charmilyharmily. You're welcome to make your own interpretations too but this is the "canon" one!

That's all the canon I can think of but if anyone else remembers anything feel free to add on! (And for these purposes, "canon" refers to the things that have been actually agreed on.)

(Also a lot is open to interpretation! This stuff is just a starting point, and there's nothing wrong with putting bits of it aside for an "au" or whatever.)

I've always harboured a mild dislike for x reader stuff. I never really held it against people because I don't have the time to antagonise them, but it was so upsetting when every time I opened the fandom tag and all I saw were posts and posts and posts of bland x reader stuff that clearly is ooc with no real substance to them at all. So many of the RP blogs seem the same way.

As someone who tries to make analysis posts and art for the same fandom, it is disheartening when I spend hours and hours on an analysis post about a character and it maybe hits 120 notes while an OOC x reader of the same character soars to the thousands. Maybe it's selfish of me to say but I say it anyway.

The fandom is full of youngsters and I never felt comfortable voicing my opinion for the same because it just felt wrong to tell kids to stop existing in communities. But the amount of times I've been put down for shipping characters with each other rather than myself is an honestly surprising number.

Um. I don't really know where I was going with this.

But your post definitely opened my eyes a little bit on even why I dislike x reader so much. It's sinking in a little bit. My hatred for OOC stuff seeps into this, I suppose. So I wanted to say that. Yeah. I agree with you.

I know self shippers have always existed.

I don't mind them. If that's how you enjoy the media, then fine.

However.

I just don't think that the sudden rise of self shippers over fan analysis and shipping is a good sign.

I think it comes from a lack of media literacy and willingness to actually engage with a piece of fiction. At least shippers and fan analysts actually talk about the world and plot itself.

self shippers imagine themselves dating a character in an au that is completely disconnected from the story, and acting in a way that's not even close to how they are in canon.

which to me is like... you have a creative writing prompt but it's not a story you're actually engaging with. someone showed you a picture of a handsome man and said write a story about how he'd kiss you.

and it's like... ok. there's no crime in just being horny, but... when that's all a fandom is... I don't consider it a fandom, it's just a masturbation fantasy.

I thought the whole point of fiction was to dive into the human experience and try and understand ourselves better. See the perspectives of others. Live vicariously in another person's shoes.

Fan analysis about themes? Perfect. You're thinking. You're feeling. You're articulating. You're growing as a person as you decide what you like or don't like, or try to put together puzzle pieces so that the whole picture makes sense. Shipping? You're imagining scenarios. You're bending canon to fit your interests. You are developing your own ability to write characters, and growing as an artist and a writer.

But self shipping...?

You're writing, I guess, but when you reduce yourself to just... idk, some generic girl that Gojo decides is the Bella to his Edward... I mean I'm glad you're happy and all.

But how happy are you

Are you happy at all, or are you frustrated by this aching loneliness deep in your gut that you just don't understand, and it never quite feels whole bc you keep cramming nothing into it.

And it's not the loneliness or the social awkwardness that I'm criticizing here ok, shippers and fan analysts can be just as lonely. I just think that the human relationship to art should be confusion and appreciation.

Benthomaar, Arin, and Lloyd

Lloyd doubts if he is a good dad, if he is good enough for his family; his son, but he tries to hide that thought. He believes that Arin can make it through his own life, that he can be responsible, and is strong enough to go through tough things, though there are times where Arin does things that makes Lloyd doubt him. Sometimes Lloyd just can't be sure about it, he can't trust himself to be confident about what he thinks, what if the way he leads or chooses his descicions ends up harming his son? He still wants to protect him, but at the same time he knows he has to let him grow and become himself.

Benthomaar wants Arin to remember that his family will always care for him, he wants to make sure Arin knows that there are people out there who care for him. Compared to Lloyd, Benthomaar is more open about his concerns, and always tells Arin to be careful, to watch out, and to remember despite how big his dreams and ambitions can be, he still has to watch out (based on his own experience). He wants Arin to remember that he is a human being despite whatever title or power he has.

All in all, they're both just a little bit scared of Arin facing the world on his own, because one day he has to. They want him to remember even though how much of a "Ninja" he is, by the end of the day he is still Arin.

Ahem, so, uhh, turns out the characters of Jujutsu Kaisen fit pretty well as Night Raven College students, temperament-wise, and that was all the excuse I needed. Yes the ages get funky but whatever. Happy high school AU except they still get cool powers and Trauma(tm). Just less than JJK canon so I count it as a win.

I also may or may not have written an entire oneshot (here on AO3) for some freshmen Satoru & Suguru bonding, featuring me still bullying Satoru over his funky eyes.

Gojo Satoru (of the Jupiter Clan)

Ignihyde Housewarden Year: Junior Species: Sky Dragon (Fae) Club: Movie Analysis Club Unique Magic: Six Eyes—pretty much just like canon Six Eyes. They can see far and wide and out of normal sight, and they can see magic in a highly detailed manner. They are also powered by magic that just, never stops ever, so he can decrease or increase the power/range at will to a degree, but technically, cutting off magic from them altogether will blind him. Also he has an inherited magic that he by no means asked for, which is, sad drumroll, Gate of the Underworld. (There are no shrouds in this AU, just me finding ways to forever make Satoru instrumental to the well-being of the world to his own detriment. I have waaaaay more thoughts about the "Jupiter Clan of dragons" and what that actually entails, but they are still jumbled and shifting, so. Maybe later.)

Geto Suguru (of the Draconia Clan)

Diasomnia Housewarden Year: Junior Species: Night Dragon (Fae) Club: Equestrian Club Unique Magic: Magic-eater—can consume and nullify any spell and gain its base magic. With minimum side effects. Mostly. :)

Satoru and Suguru are their usual brand of special-grade menaces, being the only two adolescent dragon fae in the world, buttttt they still inevitably become besties. With Shoko too, of course, who has no fear and will mess with them as they see fit.

Suguru is essentially Malleus in this AU, though in Suguru-fashion, he's way more stubborn when it comes to trying to catch up. (Translating him being new to sorcery to being new to technology was surprisingly low-hanging fruit.) Meanwhile I borrowed the Jupiter name/legacy because it was fitting and made the Gojo Clan into a long-lived dynasty of antisocial dragons who fist-fight and deal with Phantoms and recently accidentally became a tech empire, which is pretty close to the Sorcerer Family vibe a la TWST, if I say so myself.

There's definitely a lot of backstory I have in mind for the two of them. Neither of them beat teen parenthood (they are currently Malleus-aged, so 178 years old, but that's still teenagehood for a dragon/fae) and acquired children through various means, much to the consternation of their elders/court. I might develop/write more solid ideas later, but Suguru has a reverse characterization moment when he finds two starved/beaten human children (the twins) and begins his journey of losing all intrinsic racism via love, and Satoru still somehow gets his shit wrecked by Toji (probably a heist gone violent or something) and then finds out he had abandoned children: human Tsumiki and half-fae Megumi.

Ieri Shoko

Ignihyde Vice-Housewarden Year: Junior Species: Merfolk (Nurse Shark) Club: Science Club Unique Magic: Reverse—rewinds a target to its previous state within twenty four hours. The longer within the range, the harder/more magic it will take, especially for larger targets, so realistically her range is less. (For example, if someone cracked a piece of glass 24 hours ago, Shoko could restore it, but a day-old wound on a living being would be much harder.)

Making Shoko a mermaid was a joke to myself at first but then I liked it and it spiraled and now Nurse Shark Shoko is unironically one of my favorite things that I have drawn. The joke was right there too, but it's mostly fun to me because nurse sharks are docile and apathetic creatures, for the large part (they are still sharks lol), and I think match her temperament well.

Also when Satoru pestered the previous housewarden enough times to accidentally gain the title for himself, he made Shoko his vice (mostly because he trusted her) to make sure he never had to do the paperwork and the boring parts. She makes him do it anyway. To the dorm, she is less of a vice and more of a "dragon wrangler," which is still extremely appreciated.

Zen'in Maki

Savanaclaw Housewarden Year: Sophomore Species: Human Club: Track & Field Unique Magic: N/A—Maki doesn't actually have magic of her own, but she is unnaturally resistant to most magic. She can, however, use magic/cast spells through a magic-capable familiar.

She befriended a phoenix when she was younger, having survived an encounter with a wild youth. (idk what I want the details to be but I think it would be cool if she had some related burns to it, with the idea that these creatures are rare and volatile and hard for normal humans to handle without high magic resistance.) His name is Torch because I don't think Maki would put that much thought into a name, so long as its not completely stupid sounding. I almost named the phoenix Jogo but I refrained for my own sanity.

Inumaki Toge

Savanaclaw Year: Sophomore Species: Human Club: Board Game Club Unique Magic: Reality Speak—pretty much just how Cursed Speech works but with a world-friendly name. Also it can apply to inanimate objects as well. The power and scope of the command is proportional to the magic required.

Toge gets an overall nicer time in this AU because he doesn't have cursed speech 24/7 and therefore can speak normally. Though the idea of him being able to affect people/bend reality with his words does freak people out. I imagine he had a rough childhood nonetheless, because why not, leading him to be less verbal than he would have been otherwise.

Okkotsu Yuuta

Diasomnia Year: Sophomore Species: Human Club: Board Game Club Unique Magic: Wraith Pact-maker—he can enhance/bolster a ghost's magic/presence through making a link with himself. It has to be mutual, and it can last for any duration of time, although actively using the link does require magic. The ghost in question gains magic and grounding from Yuuta, and Yuuta can use the ghost's magic, including their UM, if applicable. He can have multiple links, but the first and main recipient of this magic is his childhood friend Rika.

Between her longlasting connection with Yuuta and her brutal death, she is a more wraith-like and powerful ghost. Her unique magic was to copy other people's UMs, which Yuuta can use through her in short bursts.

I didn't have space nor solid ideas for unique magics for the Hasaba twins and the Fushiguros, so I didn't do full bios for them. Later, perhaps. All of the girls are sophomores and Megumi is a freshman. Tsumiki and Nanako are sharing their social brain cell and trading stories of stupid things their dragon dads/older brothers/untitled guardians have done, while Megumi is helping budding-gamer Mimiko learn Pokemon strats. I love the idea of them all being friends, maybe after minimal difficulty in the girls' first year, likely on account of the twins being a little Sebek-shaped, in terms of wanting to be The Best Guards for Suguru, etc etc.

I put way too much effort into what was supposed to be a stupid doodle so uh. Have this Tumblr. I really don’t have a better explanation for this other than I got two more Doc Pop! Figures today, which leaves me with a growing army of 3 Docs and one singular Marty, and I keep laughing every time I look at them in my display case so here we have Marty dealing with multiple Docs from different times that have all somehow ended up in the garage in 1986. Four dimensional thinking has never been his strong suit, and trying to figure this out is not helping. He’s got two hours of sleep, a bajillion positive encouraging post-it notes from the Doc of the present telling him to sleep, hot chocolate, and four very enthusiastic Emmetts crowding the lab. Send help. And caffeine. And maybe Clara cause he’s not so sure he can keep them from blowing something up for much longer.
