At the crack of dawn, Hillary and Irene had to wake up early for preparations to welcome Rollo to Night Raven College. The two stood in front of the mirror, one brushing her teeth, the other brushing her hair, all the while Grim was still dozing off in the covers.

Hillary sat on the edge of the tub, brushing her long snowy hair as she narrowed her eyes at Irene. "Oi, so what's the guy like? Spill the tea, you wicked witch."

"Oh, shut it." Irene replied, still half-asleep as her hand moved the toothbrush all over her teeth.

To be honest, she didn't know what to tell Hillary about Rollo. A domestic terrorist who wanted to purge the world of magic? A clean freak who only saw NRC as dirt under his shoes?!

That would be too blunt and demeaning, and Irene didn't really like that. Unlike Hillary, she actually has tact.

Hillary mumbled something under her breath, reaching for her jewellery box to grab two accessories in a bright shade of red. One of an old headband she had used for a while, and the other was a recently bought bow, along with several other accessories.

"Which one should I pick?" She turned her head to Irene, holding up both pieces in her hands.

"Aren't you always wearing the headband on a daily basis?"

Irene asked in confusion, looking at her roommate as if she just grew a second head.

"But Aphro said something 'bout being girls, it'd be better to change from time to time, or something like that. Here, there's for you too."

Hillary said, hands pinning the red bow to the back of her hair neatly. Then she pulled out a turquoise bow, almost similar to hers, and handed it to Irene.

"Oh, was it from Galodis?" Irene held the bow in her hands, clipping the bow onto to her hair as she turned her head to check. Not bad, she thought impressed, that Aphro Galodis had a decent eye for fashion.

"Yeah, he made it with Hazel and Zelus. Grim has one, too."

Irene only clicked her tongue, deciding to overlook how the snowette just accepted things out of nowhere. After all, it was a gift from their upperclassman. Then she rushed out of the bathroom, changing her outfits to prepare to welcome their unavoidable esteemed guest.

Hillary's red eyes stared at the falling snowflakes through the frosty windows of Ramshackle dorm.

Snow... Perhaps it was now winter back in her home country. Her family would be flying to Russia to visit her grandparents, with vodka, hot cocoa, marshmallows, the comforting flames illuminating from the living room's old fireplace... She snuggled into the wool scarf wrapped around her neck, enjoying the warmth it provided...

"I... really hate it here."

Irene shakily walked out of the dorm's front door, swaddled in two thick coats yet still able to feel the cold. It was understandable, since she was from a tropical Asian country, where people can't completely deal with the biting cold, and 10 degree Celcius was already horrible to face.

Hillary sighed, pulling out another two scarves from her bag, one blue-grey and cyan with a cat charm for Grim, and the other a deep shade of sea green. She knelt down and wrapped the scarf around Grim's neck, much to his delight, then roughly threw the other at Irene's face and left without another word.

"That little...!"

Irene scowled, sending Hillary a scathing glare. Just a few days ago, she still saw the snowette knitting by the fireplace, she didn't think she'd get one herself. Irene lightly ran her thumb on the scarf, hand made meticulously and embroidered with a white owl. It was so, so pretty and warm. Irene wrapped the scarf around her neck, mumbling under her breath.

"Is this just some accidental product?"

... So much for being sworn enemies.

Adventures in Stage Costuming

I am Costume Mistress for a play this Friday/Saturday

Had pants for everybody except three guys

We'll call them Landon, Mark, and Joe, because that's not their names but it's close enough for me to remember 'em.

Had everyone self-report pants sizes.

Spent last Saturday in Salvation Army (I know, I know) thrifting pants in the requisite sizes.

washed the pants

kept forgetting to go to rehearsals and have a try-on sesh (adhd go zoom)

Rehearsal today had lunch break

Handed out the pants and told them to come show me.

Landon

(tall, skinny, all leg, 32 x 34)

announces "THEY'RE CALVIN KLEIN!" at his standard volume, bursts into the gymnasium, and slides across the basketball court on his socks.

He does a little spin for me and I approve.

My assistant (fun person who we'll call Lydia) asks, "Can you move?"

Landon breaks into the Orange Justice fortnite dance, with a little extra hip swaggle for emphasis.

(cue laughter from the cast)

(this is nothing less than I expected from a man who once won a cardboard boat race by making a surfboard and kicking his way across.)

Success!

Order him to go put his pants on his special labeled hanger.

Decide not to mess with the complicated parts (pockets, front seams, zipper, and the seam intersections in the undercarriage)

Sew the replacement seams first, anchoring the replacement ends HARD in the seam allowance AND in the original seam threads

Cut those OG seam threads and knot them off HARD

The OG threads are a chain stitch sorta thing, so once they're clipped, all I gotta do is pull and they ZOOP right off

(most satisfying thing in my life btw)

head back to gym with newly embiggened pants.

Joe takes the pants. "Do you need me to try them on?"

*looks into the camera like I'm on The Office*

"Yes Joe, lemme see how they work."

He leaves.

oh gosh these better fit

I didn't spend two hours hunting pants in a Salvation Army (I know, I know) and half an hour ZOOP-ing Joe's seams just to be 1 for 3 on the pants actually fitting the actors.

Joe returns.

You know how it is when you walk into a thrift store and the sign says "Half price color of the week: Orange" and then you find stuff you love and it has orange tags too?

That was his level of enthusiasm.

"They fit!" he cries.

they fit, no longer gratuitous in the seat, there's thigh space, his knees bend, the waistband stays up without a belt!! definitely need to be ironed but they look So Good

"Do you want to keep them?" I offer.

"How much?" he asks, wallet appearing in his hand.

I offer "$5 for the pants and $5 for a half hour of labor?" (yes that's too cheap, but he's a college student and also my brother.)

"Look what I've got!" he says, all but throwing a $10 at me.

"Great! I say. "Now Joe, listen closely.

Go change carefully and put them on your special labeled hanger. Only you are allowed to touch only your special labeled hanger, on pain of death and dismemberment."

"Yes ma'am!" he chirps with a salute.

For the director thing please! For Monday's (my absolute favourite. My Roman Empire. My one true love. My revisit this when I'm down fic)! A little insight into Lando's thoughts throughout him and Oscar before they talk in the hotel room and actually establish what they are. ♥️

hiii anon! sorry it took me a few days to get to this but i ended up rereading the entirety of monday before i answered it lmao. thank you so much for asking about this fic though, it really is my baby and it makes me so happy that people are still reading it and loving it as much as i do - especially that it's a comfort fic, because it was a huge comfort to write, too ❤️

under a cut because this got long!

SO. first of all, one thing i was really conscious of trying to do when i was writing monday was to have the miscommunication - and the communication - almost run in cadences? so instead of them just absolutely not getting it and then having one big confrontation, they have a number of false starts where they gradually get closer and closer to where they want to be. and that's because i wanted to give them both enough hope to keep coming back, without having them thrash it all out too early on and then losing the momentum. (i also think it's generally more realistic when conflicts build and build like this rather than going from 0-100 in the blink of an eye.)

obviously in the fic we're only getting oscar's side of things, and oscar is very good at compartmentalising and telling himself something that suits his worldview even if it's not actually true - this, i think, is his biggest failing from an emotional perspective although it's a trait that serves him very well as a driver. so what he tells himself is lando being unbothered and casual is actually lando trying very, very hard to protect his heart, and not to embarrass himself. there are hints of it (for instance, when oscar sees lando's eyes light up after he thinks oscar's going to come back to his hotel room in bahrain; max telling oscar lando falls hard; the moment in the hotel room where oscar is doing such a terrible job of communicating what he wants to lando and lando just goes along with it all and agrees anyway because he's so desperate to tell oscar what he wants to hear.)

for most of this fic, lando's pretty scared. not in a horrible way, exactly, but he finds oscar opaque and difficult to read, and he's far more aware than oscar thinks he is of all the potential ways this could go horribly, horribly wrong, from ruining their working relationship to a forced outing. he's thought about it all in GREAT detail (hence the moment where he tells oscar he'd had to text his therapist after bahrain).

this is another reason why there are a series of moments where they gradually establish to each other what they are and what they mean to each other: because lando doesn't quite trust it, or oscar, at first. he really likes oscar, but he can't really read him or his intentions (hence why he eventually says but it's not obvious to oscar, which is one of the biggest transitional moments in the fic because it's the point where lando chooses to be honest and upfront about his feelings instead of trying to defensively hide them, and the honesty breaks through to oscar, who can finally see how he's coming across to lando and why it might be confusing).

and because they're so hopeless at communicating to each other with their words, a lot of these moments come through gestures or talking around the subject instead - lando posting the photo of oscar on .jpg and making it the cover image, oscar offering to 'watch a film' with lando instead of asking him to stay the night, the running theme of bringing each other sweet treats (which i chose deliberately not just because oscar talks a lot about how much he likes chocolate but also because of the connotations of it being a slightly forbidden pleasure for an elite athlete) - even that moment early on (which i added at the last minute and has now become one of my favourite scenes in the whole fic) where they're on the plane and lando essentially forces oscar to pet his hair. lando doesn't really know how to talk about these things, but he can figure out how to act in a way that shows oscar how he feels, or at least a safe glimpse of it - because after all, he's used to using his body as a tool to get him where he wants to be.

Men’s FS results and Stephen’s protocol from 2023 World Team Trophy. He finished in 11th place with a score of 125.17, picking up 2 points for Team Canada who finished 6th overall with a total of 68 points. They pick up prize money totalling $130000 (with a cut taken by the federation).

Stephen’s total score, if that were a thing for this event, would have him under 200 points, a total of 174.95. He has only been under 200 internationally twice before (2018 JPG Canada and 2020 Junior Worlds where he broke his boot). There were his lowest scores of the season, his lowest since he left novice. These were some unbelievably low scores.

Something is seriously going wrong and Stephen needs to resolve this slump he’s in. I want him to take an analytical approach if that helps him deal with things better. Break the situation down into parts and see what is not working, how it can be resolved, the timeline of resolution, and checks to see if goals are being met. He needs to give himself some time to troubleshoot as well. This season’s approach of just doing the same thing over and over and hoping something changes for the better is obviously not working. I.e. It was disappointing to see him going back to a two quad short program layout when he knows he is not hitting those quads. He needs to be honest with himself so he can have reasonable skates.

There were good things about this free skate as well. He managed to land each of a 4T, 4S, and a beautiful 3A. His levelled elements were all level 3 and up. He made a gutsy move to attempt a sequence off of the 3F. I cannot recall seeing that kind of a sequence from him previously. He also tacked on the 2T to the 3Lo, but he was still short a combo. His PCS were in the gutter. :/

Thanks to the Canadian team for their support. They were all so kind to him. Someone even patted his shoulder after the FS. He was able to smile in spite of his performances thanks to them.

What’s next?

-GP assignments: supposed to be in late June but will potentially be delayed by the possible return of banned athletes -A summer event: Stephen needs to do a full event in the summer. Ideally he would come to Canada early and skate here as Kaetlyn Osmond or Keegan would do, but he favours Glacier Falls Summer Classic which is July 27-30. -A Challenger Series event - ACI, Nebelhorn Trophy, Nepela Memorial, and Finlandia are events before the GP where Canadian skaters get assigned. He should really be doing two since he is clearly in need of mileage but he has to start with one. ACI is likely to be yet another skate off. -Canada is hosting Worlds next season, and we have two spots for men. If he can get it together maybe he can claim a spot.

I want Stephen to know that while his fans are clamouring for a coaching change we still very much believe in him. If we didn’t we wouldn’t care how well or poorly he does. I will choose to remember him as I last saw him - brilliantly skating his FS in Oshawa at Nationals. That is the real Stephen Gogolev, and the one I hope to see again next season and for many years afterwards. I believe he can overcome whatever it is that is holding him back and he will reemerge as a top skater once more. So don’t give up. Show us the fight you’ve got.

im gonna be 100% honest. ive had doubts that glaze/nightshade even works ever since ive started seeing it go around. i feel like its gained traction among a bunch of desperate people with not much tech literacy seeking a miracle protection against having the images they post online get scraped by bots that sweep social media/artist sites & feed the results to a generative algorithm. it claims to be "completely invisible" like putting a coat of varnish over a painting, but digital image data doesnt work that way.

jpgs, pngs, webps, all image formats are just packets of code utilizing certain rules in order to write pixels a certain way onto the file, and anytime u open an image the software projecting the image is utilizing this packet under these specific rules to display the image in the way it was saved. a jpg adds image compression and does not support transparency bc that is what its specific set of rules does, for example. some software, such as image editing and file browsing software, cant open certain image file types bc it does not know what to do with the specific rules the certain file type is utilizing and how to project it. filetypes for image editing software such as psd arent actually image file types, really. theyre a collection of layers and images as raw data meant to be utilized solely for the programs theyre made for, and wont be openable or projectable in standard image projection format. meaning if u clicked on a psd file it would open photoshop, not display the image. true image file types are one layer, one image. if u "coat" a png in a completely invisible layer, that layer will have no data, and will never be displayed. if a png displays differently on projection than it did upon saving, its bc the software is altering the image, or failing to utilize the rules correctly, or that ur computer/monitor is failing to project correctly, or that ur file is corrupted and did not save correctly. there isnt a code in an images filetype that can *only* manifest under extremely specific projection conditions, such as being nebulously used to train a generative program. (which, do any of u actually know how generative ai scrapes images?)

but lets say u could actually hide a "poison" in a png. completely invisible to the eye, all pixels exactly the same. u could post this image online & share it around and itd look exactly the way u made it, but if someone saved this file and used it to generate an ai image, that "poison" would activate and the resulting image would look nothing at all like the original. except, theyd have to use the original file. if that file was uploaded through a website, and that website uses an image host system, or otherwise encrypts and embeds the image, the file is changed and it is no longer the original file. now its a copy of the image that the websites host system produced. this is why images uploaded to tumblr, for example, become more compressed and lossy than the original file. but say the website ur posting on will not alter the file at all, and instead display the whole file as-written for anyone to view. cant download the image to use it bc itll "poison the well", so what can we do? screenshot. ur computer just made a poison-free copy of the original file, and in the original resolution with zero compression no less.

glaze/nightshade is pretty obviously bullshit, but that raises the question. why does their program need to be downloaded and what are they doing with that gpu power?

and if their "poison" isnt completely invisible and actually makes ur image look like shit, whats the point? whats it protecting that a watermark cant?
