tips for writing an au? specifically when it's based off of an existing show/book/film/game etc. because i really want to write them but i'm too scared of making them too similar to the source material that they just end up as the source material copy and pasted but with different characters
I think the trick is that the source material of the AU should be your guide and not the rule!! Like I usually try to include my favorite parts from whatever it’s based on and then anything I didnt like I change to my own liking. Also keeping the difference in the characters in mind. Like even if the spot the characters is filling is very similar to them, they’re probably not the exact same person and you can use that the decide outcomes and events based on like would so and so react differently than the original character?
Usually I focus more on the vibes of the original media and try to replicate that rather than matching every point of the story bit by bit. You have creative freedom to change and do anything you want even if the plot is based on something!! I’ve definitely seen people copy things word for word, as long as you don’t do that, you’ll be fine!

I’m not sure if this question has been asked before, but is Karenza the only one capable of giving Maenads their Titan forms? Could other divines perhaps give Maenads Titan forms, albeit ones that are far different to the Minervae? I remember you saying Disgrace could do that, but Disgrace is kind of an outlier due to his alien nature.
Good question! Spellcrafting is as much of an art as it is a science. Every mage has their own little techniques that make the outcome each spell highly individual.
One doesn't necessarily have to be a divine to turn maenads into minervae, they just have to be extremely skilled in transmutation magic. Any mage could technically do what Karenza does to the maenads, but here's the thing...it would be like trying to recreate a master's painting.
The general idea might be there, but it will never be an exact copy, because the original is made up of thousands of the master's individual brush strokes. Not even the master themself could recreate the painting exactly; every version would be a little different. Just a few little brush strokes can change the vibe of the whole painting dramatically.
This is why there are differences between even Karenza's own minervae. You have some who can see into the future, some who can't, and some who can see so far into eternity that it drove them insane. Some have pinkish hair and features while others are more purplish. Each minervae turns out a bit different. There are inconsistencies between individuals, but you can still tell they were crafted by Karenza because they have her signature "style". Minervae are like living pieces of art.
Knowing this, imagine how different another mage's minervae would be from Karenza's. No mage can perfectly replicate Karenza's "brush strokes".
What I'm trying to say is: if minervae were crafted by someone else, they probably wouldn't resemble the minervae we know at all. They would be very different creatures.
For example, look at this picture showing the Mona Lisa painted by different artists:
They're all paintings of the same woman, but since each artist has their own style and technique, they have all turned out quite different from eachother, some to the point of being almost unrecognizable.
Likewise, each mage's minervae might be the same creature in spirit and intention, but they will probably take vastly different forms.
It's a hard concept for me to explain, but I hope that makes sense!

Tstwfm - Color theory 101
I've always been a big fan ot the way some movies and cartoons color-code their characters to underline some traits of their personality, and to create harmony in couple or friendship dynamics. For example, the dynamic trio of blue/red/green characters - like Huey, Dewey and Louie from Disney comics or Lightning, Chick Hicks and Strip weather from Cars - or the complementary colors in Star Butterfly and Marco Diaz's clothes, that only confirmed to all of SVTFOE fans that they were meant to be from minute 1 of the show.♥️
It was only natural for me to try and replicate some of these tricks when I was working on my OCs.
The first complementary couple that originated from these reasonings were Buster and Bia. Aside from the fact that Bia is wearing a yellow-ish color to underline the concept of her being fun-loving and energetic, the shade I decided to associate her with verts a little more towards orange, making her outfit complement Buster’s blue one.
A similar reasoning applies to the Springs family, Bia’s parents. I’ll start from Joe first, because he chronologically comes before Floyd in my characters’ lives. We’ve already had a chance to meet Bia’s father, and to learn about his toxic behaviour and the wrong choices he ended up making in his life. That’s why I chose a “dirty”, muddy kind of brown ash his main color that would underline the negative vibes we’ve gotten so far from him.
His ex-wife Camila, on another hand, is a strong, passionate woman, that had the courgae to speak up and break free from an abusive relationship, and to start building a new life for herself and her daughter. She needed a color that’s just as fierce as she is, and there’s arguably any color fiercer than red. If you trace back to the examples I presented you guys with at the beginning of this post, then, you may notice that she and Floyd (as a further proof that Camila is now in a healthier, happier relationship) share the same kind of colors as Marco and Star from SVTFOE. 😉
Lastly, we have Lena and Oliver, the Moon siblings. Now, I have to admit that the way I picked colors for them was a bit different - trying a few different hues by trial and error until I found the ones that were “just right”. But I think it’s worth to mention how fate wanted them both to end up having a color similar to those of the parent they feel most close to; in a way, as a product of an orange-blue couple, both Lena and Ollie (with their purple and brick orange colors) can still be considered to be a blue-orange pair, but the colors they took from their parents blended together to create something new. Pretty much like it happens in general with a child’s genes - no one is an exact copy of just one parent, but rather a beautiful mix of the two.

A couple of weeks ago, while I was helping a friend, I stumbled on a few photos of Nick and Charlie amigurumis, freakishly similar to my own, to the point that the photos were even taken from the same perspective. The post was from a year after I showed my Nick and Charlie amigurumis for the first time, so you can guess that I was really distraught when I saw it, even more so after I realised that this crocheter's account was way bigger than mine.
I'm not naïve, I know I'm not the only crocheter in the world who made amigurumis depicting Nick and Charlie, I really do. And I know my style is not super original and distinct and that other crocheters work in a similar fashion to me. And that's fine, really, but even in those instances, when each crocheter is doing their own thing, it shows. And in this case it was really obvious that this person had replicated my work.
I decided that the best course of action was talking to them privately and trying to solve it as peacefully as possible. Thankfully it went all smoothly, the crocheter admitted that they replicated my work and offered to delete their posts. Honestly, I could cry with relief when everything was resolved, but it got me thinking.
I can understand to a certain degree that if there's no pattern available and you really want that amigurumi you may be tempted to just copy it using the posted photos, but it's incredibly disrespectful. It just shows a lack of appreciation for the time and dedication and skill poured into every amigurumi, which it's even more staggering coming from someone who knows the craft, who understands how hard it is (or should, anyway). And if you do because you really really want that amigurumi, don't post it on your socials where the original designer can see it, and more than anything, don't benefit economically from that work that doesn't belong to you.
And honestly? It would be way cooler if you just tried to do it on your own way. You like my work and want something similar? Awesome, you can try your hand at crocheting the same characters and with the same general vibe as me, and I'm sure the end result will be different to mine because that's the beauty of craft! Two people can follow the exact same pattern step by step and the final amigurumis will still be different! So take a chance! Try to do it on your own and not copying some photos!
But let me add more. If you don't feel like doing all this and designing and that stuff, try to talk to the original crocheter first. Ask for permission to draw inspiration from them and then give them credit, a very important detail. I don't mind this in the slightest as long as you talk to me first and it's for personal use! I can't talk for the rest of the community, but as a general rule, I think it's a good idea to follow the "ask for permission" bit.
And again, one more time, always with credit. As I said in the first post, we're here to help and uplift each other.
*inhales*
Don't copy your fellow crocheter's work. We're here to help and uplift each other, not to steal a smaller crocheter's amigurumi and hope nobody will notice
When you do this, you not only show how disrespectful you are to the copied crafter, but to the community as a whole too. So just don't, respect yourself as a crocheter and extend that respect to everybody else involved.
Thank you.

The Demogorgon Is Billy’s Dark Reflection
At first glance, the Demogorgon seems irrelevant to the question of whether or not Billy’s coming back. But as I aim to prove, it has everything to do with it.
Stranger Things deals heavily in the theme of reflections and opposites. Characters are designed to mirror each other, embody the opposite of each other, and sometimes both at once. Hell, the Upside Down is presented as a reflection of the real world. Literally.
(Damn. They ain’t subtle.)
By the term “dark reflection,” I mean a relationship like that between the Upside Down and the real world. The two are almost exact copies; the Upside Down has all the same landmarks, down to Will’s fort in the woods. But the Upside Down has been corrupted by the Mind Flayer, its inhabitants turned into unthinking monsters.
It’s like us. But it’s everything we hate about ourselves, everything we’re afraid of becoming.
When we probe relationships between characters, we find that pattern replicated across the board. I don’t have room to explore it in full here. However, Billy and the Demogorgon are one of the most obvious examples.
With the exception of El, the main character of the show, no one else has been compared to the Demogorgon like Billy has.
>>Billy fills the “monster” role in S3 that the Demogorgon filled in S1.
In S1, the Demogorgon stalks the inhabitants of Hawkins, kidnapping and killing them. In S2, we find out Demogorgons do not act alone, but are the puppets of a greater monster: the Mind Flayer.
In S3, the Mind Flayer possesses Billy, turning him into His puppet. Billy then stalks the inhabitants of Hawkins, kidnapping and taking them to his master, which ultimately results in their deaths.
In S3, the Demogorgon wears a human face.
>>Like the Demogorgon, Billy is the puppet of a greater monster... even before he’s possessed.
Max tells us as much in Runaway Max when she’s watching Billy beat the life out of Steve:
I remembered how it had felt the first time Id watched the Hargroves in action. Neil standing over Billy with the belt in his hand. Neil calling me a stupid little girl for having the guts to try to stop him. Making it so clear that he thought I was small and weak and pointless. And knowing Neil believed that still wasn’t as bad as the way Billy had hated me for trying to help him. He was damaged. Broken, maybe. And even if he’d been coherent enough to argue with, it wouldn’t make a difference. I understood now that Neil was in his head, and that meant he was just as dangerous as his father. (p 218)
This implies not only that Billy is the Demogorgon, but also that Neil is the Mind Flayer. The ramifications of that idea are... oof. Just oof.
Remember the definition of “dark reflection” that I gave you. A dark reflection is something that’s like us, but represents what we hate or fear most about ourselves.
The Demogorgon is Billy’s dark reflection because it represents his fear of losing his humanity to an abuser.
>>Runaway Max draws on the grossest scene in S2 to give us a Billy/Demogorgon parallel.
In S2, Dustin finds a baby Demogorgon and names it D’Artagnan. At first Dart seems harmless. Then he molts and, in a scene I hate to watch, eats Dustin’s cat.
Keep in mind that Dustin’s cat is orange.
In Runaway Max, Billy seems harmless at first. Then, in a flashback to California, we’re told of the day Billy “molts.”
One afternoon, he’s hanging out with Max and his buddies Wayne and Sid on the scrubby hill behind the Hargrove house. He’s bored and pissed at Sid for besting him on a history paper. Pulling out his lighter, he starts playing with it.
We learn there’s a corpse of a cat nearby:
There was a dead cat that had been lying under one of the sweet pea bushes for a while. A mangy orange tom with one white foot. (p 63)
Billy stalks over to it with his lighter. In a “hard, bright” voice, he talks about giving the cat a “Viking funeral.” Then, over Max and Sid’s protests, he drenches the corpse in butane and lights it on fire. The flames race down the hill, and the others have to stomp them out before they spiral out of control.
Max notes Billy’s reaction:
Billy just watched, standing over the burning cat, smiling that small, tight smile he got when something seemed funny to him....
After that, I knew.
Not that Billy was crazy or out of control, exactly - it wasn’t like the cat had been alive. But the fact that he’d done it meant something. (p 67)
Yeah, this scene means something, alright. Symbolically, Billy - a baby Demogorgon - has just eaten a cat. And, like Dustin with Dart, Max realizes he’s a monster in the making.
>>The show’s plot and cinematography choices emphasize the Billy/Demogorgon connection.
1) El first meets them in the Void. They’re both crouching, and literally or symbolically feasting, as she approaches from the right.
2) They stalk after the kids, shoulders hunched. In the Demogorgon’s case, the kids are trapped. In Billy’s case, he thinks he’s trapping the kids, but they turn the tables on him.
3) When the Demogorgon is activated, a crack rips through the tile wall of the lab. When Billy is activated, we see cracked tiles on the wall behind him.
4) El pins them against the wall with her powers. Then she screams in their faces before she deals the “death blow.” In the climactic shot, she’s on the left, they’re on the right. Mike and/or her friends are behind her.
All of that ^ is the equivalent of the Duffers banging pots and pans. “Hey guys! Billy is like the Demogorgon! The Demogorgon is like Billy!” When I first noticed it, it told me to look for other examples of “mirroring.” Do we get any other shots that juxtapose the two?
Turns out we do. Oh my god, we do.
Study this pair of shots very, very carefully.
In the first, the Demogorgon is approaching the Byers' house. It's in the center of the frame, moving straight toward us. We see woods in the background; a lamp post is on the left side.
In the second, Billy is running away from the sauna. He's in the center of the frame, moving directly away from us. We see woods in the background; a lamp post is on the right side.
I’ve already talked about how the Upside Down is the deep sea. However, it is ALSO the woods. In fairytales, the woods are a place of mystery and monsters. Some of the most famous tales happen there, such as Little Red Riding Hood and Hansel and Gretel. (If you want to read more about this topic, here’s a Wikipedia article to get you started. Also a cool article on Medium)
With that in mind, we can describe this pair of shots as follows:
In the first, the Demogorgon is emerging from the Upside Down.
In the second, Billy is going to the Upside Down.
Interesting, right? Ah, but that’s only half of the story.
Study this pair now and tell me what you see.
Yep... they’re related.
In the second shot, Billy is swimming into the ocean. It’s the last glimpse we have of his young, happy self before the Mind Flayer kills him. He’s in the center of the frame, moving directly away from us, just like the first shot.
With that in mind, we could say...
In the first, he’s going to the Upside Down in its ‘woods’ manifestation.
In the second - OUR LAST GLIMPSE OF YOUNG BILLY BEFORE HE DIES - he’s going to the Upside Down in its ‘ocean’ manifestation.
Interesting how we've only seen him leave. Yet we have this iconic image of the Demogorgon, his “dark reflection,” emerging from the Upside Down and coming to us.
I have a spooky vibe, y'all, that we're missing a final shot.
And we're going to see Billy...
coming to us...
from the water.
I have so much more to unpack here, but this post has gone on long enough! In future posts, I’ll lay out more evidence suggesting Billy will return from the water. I’ll also explore the mythological implications. They’re mind-blowing :3
»»————- ✼ ————-««
P.S. I mentioned El has a unique relationship to the Demogorgon too. I’ll try to explain that eventually~~

Hi! I don't know if this is an annoying/difficult question, sorry if it is, but do you have any advice at all for modelling sims based off real people? Your sims are SO crazy good. When I try to make them they end up looking... eh... Vaguely like the person? But there's a huge gap between that and some kind of 'spark' some simmers seem to manage to capture.
Hello! Definitely not annoying. Difficult, as in how difficult it is to answer? Maybe. I'm gonna go off on a couple of tangents. But I'm gonna try my best to explain the process. Which isn't really much of one sorry.
There's a handful of tutorials and tips out there regarding reference photos and like... proportions and all that so I won't cover that.
I use that as a general guide of course, but mostly I just save some photos of the person at various angles and focus on one feature or two at a time. Literally going back and forth between reference photo and my game. I think if you try to get everything at the same time, it really makes it easy to get frustrated with whatever your sim looks like at the moment. Making sims in general is a combination of a LOT of things depending on your style.
I can point out ALL the flaws with my sims based on real people. In my experience, it’s about getting the defining features of a person close enough to the real thing so that it resembles them. I don't think you need a complete copy to get the point across, however i do think some people and features are harder to emulate than others. I've been working on some sims for YEARS, and they still don't work out lol
and take a look at this progression on my sim based on Z4ne H0ltz starting back in 2015!
that first screenshot:
Personally, I get a little lost if I work on a sim too much all at once. I find some time away makes me less tired and frustrated. Just pace yourself :)
Also if you need any help, shoot me a message here or on discord. I promise I don't judge or anything.. it's sims who cares lol
TO START...
I suggest starting with the head and its shape. Starting off with a game-generated sim, the first slider I get to is head width. It's usually too dang wide for my tastes. And then adjusting the general position of the the features. You can always change things later, so you don't have to know exactly what you're going to do, but as I've mentioned before, sculpting sims up in CAS is just practice with sliders! Also in the long run, you may want to use Pu+Chi House's Smooth Face Normals slider! I attempt to explain and show what it does here. I've uploaded the slider here: https://simfileshare.net/download/984204/
This is gonna be a doozy sorry in advance if the read more doesn't work
SLIDERS SLIDERS SLIDERS
Big sliders like Pu+Chi House’s face shape sliders dramatically change the face shape, and it could save you a lot of time! I highly suggest using these to get rid of the weird large jaw sims can get.
Play with different sliders and how they interact with one another! Example: jaw width and Cheek Fullness affect the same area. if you need a wide jaw and don’t want cheek distortion, you can use cheek fullness, lower the jaw width slider and then edit the cheekbones from there
Knowing what sliders move what and how it can work to your advantage is key! I cover this in my reply post about noses.
For visual reference:
I start out with my nose but I want the nostrils to sit further on the outside
so i go in and use the nose width slider and raise it to widen the lower nose:
Then lower the nostril scale slider
Comparison:
as you can see, i kind of achieved what I wanted, but also widened the nose tip too! Welp, that takes another slider I have, Tip Width. And I'll adjust that accordingly! It's really just a matter of what you're going for and what you're going to have to compensate for as a result!
That said, our community has made some awesome sliders that open up so many possibilities and even eliminate the need to do that multi-slider tango. I wouldn't even know where to begin (wish I wanted to make videos because I could talk for an hour about sliders)
For example @pitheinfinite made sliders that can make sims look better and more realistic, I'm jealous at what they've achieved!
They have their Inner Corner to Nose slider that moves an area of the sim's face hat make eyebags and the shadows and lines appear farther out from the inner eye. It saves you from having to use cheek sliders to mimic the effect and thus ruining the face shape you have going
It's truly an INDISPENSABLE slider. One of many!
Since I make sliders, I usually just make some to specifically fix whatever issue I'm having. Granted they're made with general function in mind, which makes my cheater-y way of making things happen more useful in the future. I have about 50 experimental unfinished sliders in my game and can tell you that all my current sims use them for some reason or other. So I'm not working with nothing, I guess?
EYE SPY 👁
The best way to really get nice accurate looking sims is the eyes.
Pay attention to the slant of the eye, the shape and position of the upper and lower eyelids. you can use the game’s Eyelid Height slider, and AWT’s Eyelid width and height sliders (and many more)
and especially where the iris (green) sits relative to the eyelid. getting that shape and eyeball positioned correctly really makes a HUGE difference
I do suggest Bloom’s Eye slider (left and right) that rotate the eyes left and right. That along with their Lazy eye sliders can give your sims a less symmetric face and position the eyes to be FAR more accurate and realistic than the default.
I also recommend their vertical sliders (Eye lift or drop) to help with eye positioning.
I can't stress the importance of the right contacts or eyes for your sims. Of course it all depends on how you make your sims's eyes and all that. Take the last sim i posted about. It took forever and a half to find the right contacts that didn't need severe or intense editing to capture the same vibe the person he's based on. The problem is pretty persistent for me, and I am just speaking for myself when I say this is necessary. Iris size, shading, recolorability, detail, catch lights, and pupil position are things to consider for your play style and preferences.
In addition to seeing what eyes will do the trick, I do edit the catch lights in the screenshots to give the eyes a different emotion or look. (I use defaults that get rid of the game-generated catch lights, and supernatural eye glow.) It's nice when that's all it is and I don't have to go in and photoshop things in and out to make them look human lmao
Perfect, schmerfect
And just know that as long as you have the same vibe or look going on it doesn't need to be perfect! Things will evolve over time, and you can change and perfect things as you go along, but close is better than trying to achieve an exact replica. We are working with the limitations of sliders and the optimized meshes they work on! So yeah there might be jagged bits or the profile might not exactly match and some things might not be accurate, but that's okay! Considering what sims look like at their default, you should be proud! I use the same mf eyebrows on all my sims basically and I tell myself they're just placeholders (yeah, right), but I manage to make them work with what I have!
Sliders, Makeup, and Skins, oh my!
a good base skin is critical, but not the end of the world if you pick the wrong one. They determine kind of definition and types of features highlighted on a sim 100000% and you might lose a feature you like or dislike when you change them! Feel free to switch up between skins you have to find the best fit.
Makeup can be a game-changer though!!! Any details you can add and help make your sim look the most like the person you're basing them off can go MILES.
In some cases, I've actually gotten really interesting results trying to get my sculpt as close as possible to real life references so the makeup makes a difference but don't define the features by themselves. Still, though, I utilize makeup up a LOT. [remember that if you use Nraas, you can layer makeup. Right-clicking makeup will also remove it if it's applied :)]
Here's the last sim i posted about when removing makeup:
no nosemasks really replicates the face-claim's nose (too shiny at the lower part) but it'll do 🤷♀️
Freckles, eyebags, highlighters, face shadows, pores, nosemasks, etc are all great!!
The way you move your sliders WILL effect how these look, so don't rely on makeup that adds super-specific detail or goes over an area you know is a jumbled mess because of sliders!
I do have a mess of recommendations and wcifs for skins and makeup. replies tag | wcif tag
[also I love compiling wcif cc lists for my sims it's great]
Finally, I appreciate your comment about my sims, mainly because I know they're not ever really exact copies or as close as I want to be to their real life counterparts, so thanks!! I've seen fellow simmers get really good results without messing as much as I do and I love when people can make really good maxis match likenesses because it's just so damn cool! It's truly a talent. I'm not one of those lucky few, but I like to try my way at it anyway. After what feels like some good progress I'll post a pic here. Even after doing this forever I don't feel like I'm an expert or can get good results in a shorter amount of time, but it's just fun to see the progression (or regression) of how my sims look.

Real Writing Advice
I just thought I’d share some of the tips and tricks I’ve picked up over the years in regards to writing. I am by no means an expert, but I’ve been writing screenplays (at least attempting to) and fanfics/short stories for around 7+ ish years and I have definitely learned a lot from my mistakes. I’m partially making this post to combat some of my own imposter syndrome, and motivate me to work on a script I’ve been avoiding. This is just advice from my own experience, not a bunch of regurgitated stuff from the internet.
“Write what you know” (stay with me on this!)
I know, you’ve heard this before a million times. But that’s because it’s true. I’d like to extend more on this idea though because it’s often overlooked due to how vague it is.
To me, “write what you know” means taking your life, your experience and putting it into the story. Nobody else will ever have your exact life experience, so use material from your own life. DO NOT worry about it being done a million times, because I can assure you, if you do it your own way, it will end up being unique.
WRITE DOWN EVERYTHING. As a comedy writer, it can be really hard to create funny situations/dialogue out of thin air. But observation is the key to comedy and writing in general. Anything funny I hear, a story that happens to me or a friend, I have a strong opinion about something, etc. I write it all down. Your phone is right there, open the notes and write it down because you WILL end up forgetting it. I cannot tell you how much effort I have saved because I have a whole bunch of notes that are just pure material.
Character writing is very difficult for me, as I always end up making characters that are just like me. In fanfics I end up projecting myself onto the characters hella, and I only notice during the re-reads. But...you’re the only one to reference. You ARE the main character of your life, so it’s only natural. What I do to create characters is look within. Make a character who personifies the person you want to be, the type of person you hate, the type of person you crush on, a character that shares a flaw with you, who you feel like inside vs. outside, etc. Make a list if you want, as many things you can think of. Share a piece of yourself with every character, your own experience adds a realness that can’t be replicated through research. DO NOT be afraid of flaws! Flaws are the absolute best thing you can give to a character. The character has to overcome these internal flaws to get where they want to, so don’t shy away from character flaws!
Enjoy Writing!
Too many times it’s easy to get caught up in the stress of writing. Making sure your story is cohesive and engaging, and trying to juggle a million things at once is HARD. Writing is hard. But please have fun, I beg of you.
If you love a certain movie, watch it, analyze and learn why! Don’t copy the entire movie, but take things that you really love and put it into your own story. Great artists steal. You love a certain plot point, character element, message, dynamic, etc., find a way to incorporate those things you love into your work.
Put yourself in the audiences shoes. Create the type of movies you love watching, the type of movies that cause you to jump into a fandom! Once you find out why you love the stories you do, you start getting excited about your story. For me, doing this has taken the negative connotation of “working” on a script away that I often can’t get away from my notepad. You start getting excited to write, and while that passion unfortunately dies down, keep finding reasons to be excited about your story.
Play around with genre. Tell a story from a different perspective. Add that element you thought was “too weird” to add. Don’t shut down ideas that seem too self indulgent or ridiculous, it might just lead to something. The screen/page is your place to play! Try something new, test it out. Do not be afraid to “fail” because your just brainstorming! Failure doesn’t really exist, it’s just testing and trying things until you find gold. You have a whole page of just scribbled nonsense? So what! Everything is part of the process. Stop beating yourself up before you even start.
Vibes are important
A lot of times I have no story ideas, but I want to make a movie like ______. But hey, vibes are a start! Maybe you just have a few scenes in mind, a color scheme, etc. If that’s what’s bouncing around your head, start writing them down! From there you can start connecting dots. Throw in a character you’ve been working on. Basically all of my stories start out as “just vibes”, so don’t dismiss them.
When I’m starting a new project, I’ll make a playlist of music. Not music that will be part of the soundtrack necessarily, but just music that relates to my idea. I take soundtracks from other movies and just put them all in a pile, throw it on shuffle, and write. It makes everything 100% more fun and engaging, and having the music match the “vibe” helps immensely with creating the vision.
Like making a playlist, I make a pinterest board filled with just everything related to my idea. Aesthetics, character looks, locations, etc. This helps me really create a vision of what I want this movie to be. Not the story, not the plot.
Your Brain, Your Process
There is no correct way to create anything. When I was starting out, I would read and watch a lot of “advice” and “screenwriting process” stuff. While I felt like I was gaining knowledge, it really only made me feel like I didn’t know what I was doing.
USE YOUR STRENGTHS TO YOUR ADVANTAGE. So your visual? Great! Make little idea bubbles, make a venn diagram, use a story circle, draw lines connecting ideas, use a punnett square, etc. Maybe you’re really good at writing fanfictions but not screenplays. Great! Write your scenes out like fanfictions before formatting them like a script. Just some examples but my point is, use the skills you already have. This makes it so much easier, it takes away the daunting feeling of writing and allows you to progress.
Find writers you look up to and learn from them! One of my favorite writers is Dan Harmon, so I looked up writing advice from Dan Harmon and found a bunch of advice that was extremely useful to me (highly recommended for visual people). Look up the writers to your favorite movies/shows/books, and see what you find! You’d be surprised how much extremely useful information is out there if you look. Learn from the people you look up to, the writers you want to be. I keep little notebooks and write notes (like i’m in class), of everything I learn, and when I need some help, I whip out my little notebook and find some advice, it has helped me get un-stuck countless times. Over time, the concepts you learn will become more instinctual, making writing easier.
It takes time. This is my biggest problem. I will work on a movie for a few months, then get bored and desert it. But look at any movie, if you see any storyboard or “first draft” type of stuff. It’s like a completely different movie! Great things take time, you don’t have to speedrun a whole script. Just keep working on it, it will take a long time, but it will be worth it.
I hope that was helpful to some of you writers out there!

long post, this is my own pov but its really worth reading up here's my pov, from the understanding of fair use. the copyright system in the USA is not perfect but it is a) what is currently legally enforceable b) its a decent starting point. There is also a a US copyright claim to a Midjourney created comic (the writing & panelling were human made but the specific per panel images were machine generated & edited/layouted by its human writer) thats written in pretty layman terms that might help.
Copyright is also! not just about what is/isnt stealing but it does deal a lot with whats legal and what you can profit from and that's pretty deeply tied into this issue. And the copyright office decision also cuts well into the non human factor of this
So here are the 4 general guidelines for copyright: 1. the purpose and character of the use, including whether such use is of a commercial nature or is for nonprofit educational purposes;
2. the nature of the copyrighted work;
3.the amount and substantiality of the portion used in relation to the copyrighted work as a whole;
4. and the effect of the use upon the potential market for or value of the copyrighted work.
the worst and most flagrant copyright issues are because you can, in fact, explicitly instruct the AI to copy specific artists. Yes it trains mindlessly on large datasets, but it also learns like, "expressionism" are these traits and art style like "Monet" are these other traits. And manyyy of these artists are contemporary and living artists, especially those who's work is popular on social media. For human artists, you learn techniques sure, but in practice, its almost always an amalgamation of different techniques and your own techniques AND human input to create unique images. Aka, when I copy a Kevin Wada painting tutorial, the way I draw and what I like wouldn't make it look like Wada's. In general and in practice with experienced artist's- yeah copying techniques rarely actually replicates the work. But in many cases- the training on general techniques to create unique art is just not true as these programs outright attempt to emulate original works. This is why a lot of articles against AI point out that you can fully reproduce Sony's Dualshock 3 controllers and near perfect frame recreations of Avenger's Endgame. Its not about technique, its that you are recreating end products. This would violate a lot of 3 (because now your end work is suddenly a lot like the original. In addition, they can often be rarely transformative. They do not add new ideas or perceptions to the thing they copy, theyre just... adding it) and 4 (if you copy comic artist John McJohn's exact art style, the way AI does, you are actively impacting the market and value for John McJohn to sell his art. If you are selling a product with all the main characteristics as John McJohn buyers, it's a good sign number 4 is a problem)
2. Okay well tumblr user jirnkirks, what about all the art that isnt identifiably from a specific IP or artist? I would say this is where some of the legal stuff is beyond me slash the US Copyright system isn't perfect and golden. But first of all, and most notably, an individual human copying an existing painting or following a tutorial is very different from a for profit corporation data scraping millions of images in bulk. Shitbag vibes aside, data scraping like this is a commercial use of the product. It's a bit like the difference between going to a govt protected/taxpayer funded river and taking a sip or a dip vs going to a river, setting up a pump and packaging machine to bottle up the water to sell. Many of these companies are taking images at a scale, collecting them, and using them at a profit with a new technology that artists did not consent to.
As an artist... in little ways, there are some similarities. But from a long pov? Its one thing to accept your art will get human copycats and people inspired by you. Its a whole other kettle of fish to see your art being used to power an industry commercializing artist's work as a whole without consent whilst actively working to remove the value and industry for your work in an already exploitative industry.
3. How do humans use techniques? All humans have their own individual thoughts and artistic viewpoints. To say artists steal or copy each other techniques is a bit of a flattening of what goes on- of course copying techniques occurs and copycat artists, but generally like...artists just inspire each other and a single artist is their own sauce + a mix of different things that makes something identifiably theres. Their inspiration is transformed by the human. This might change one day but.... AI aren't people. I can't stress this enough. they are not intelligent, they are not cognizant or conscious. They are essentially complicated formulas that learn to use billions of variables to approximate a balance the end user likes. There is nothing inherently human or transformative in their works because they are programs. They can't do any of that. This was, in fact, part of the Copyright Office's decision. Humans can choose the result they want but the actual process generating the image? It is the same level of intelligence behind shaking a dice and printing the result.
And I think its fair that artists come from a community of inspiration and generally, most understand that as they become more prolific artists, they give back to the same community of artists. Computer programs are not and have never been part of this community, and worse yet, its greatest proponents have been actively anti artist, both philosophically and financially.
isn’t art about taking/copying little elements from the art of others? if ai is trained on such a large data set how is fhat ethically wrong, artists don’t consent to people taking their techniques either
/gen question please don’t attack me

YoyoBeat soulmate AU
Not much time had passed since Beat met and subsequently recruited Yoyo. In that very short time, however, something had become overtly obvious: Yoyo liked to hip-bump other rudies, regardless of crew. It would have been mostly a non-issue, not much more than an annoyance, except for the black splotch on Beat's right hip.
He'd had it since birth, just as most people have a splotch somewhere on their body, a spot that remained pitch black until the moment one's soulmate touched them for the first time, which would always be right where the spot was. The placement of Beat's spot meant it was easier to hide than some people's; Gum had a handprint on her shoulder, while most of Tab's right side was marked, indicating he was most likely going to run into his soulmate on accident. But Beat's mark was hidden to the world, he was the only person who knew where his was, or that he even had one at all.
Beat had considered before what might lead to such a strange place for a mark, but just under two months ago he was suddenly struck with a possible reasonable explanation for it, and it made his stomach turn in a strange way. Suddenly there was a man whose go-to action was slamming the side of his left hip into people's right hips. And suddenly, Beat truly understood just what the mark on his hip meant. Sure, he'd always known, but it had never really clicked as reality.
It didn't take any time at all for Yoyo to feel comfortable enough in the crew to start his assumedly playful assault. Beat watched, over the course of a week, as Yoyo managed to knock over almost every member of the GGs, as well as every enemy he could reach. It only took nine days for Yoyo to try and topple Beat as well.
Beat, already prepared for this moment, maneuvered away easily. "Nice try."
Yoyo stumbled, having not expected Beat to move, but recovered quickly and spun around on his skates. "Aw, man, what's the prob?"
Beat put his hands on his hips and smirked. "If you really wanna get me, prove it."
Yoyo's mouth dropped for a second, before he matched Beat's expression. "Is that challenge?"
"Maybe," Beat kicked himself back, gliding backwards just long enough to wave teasingly, then turned and took off down the street.
After a short moment of stunned immobility, Yoyo began skating full-speed after Beat. There was a massive smile tugging at the corners of his lips, the rush of air and the excitement of a chase pushing him on more than anything else in this moment. He kept his eyes on Beat as best he could, and came to realize that they were headed to Benten-Cho. A surge of confidence coursed through Yoyo and he picked up the pace.
Beat pumped his arms as he swayed, pushing himself through 99th Street. The bright neon lights all around him were somewhat comforting. Despite the sun being down, it was just as bright and busy as you’d expect of a daytime shopping district. As he glided through the streets and between the bustling people, Beat almost forgot what he was even doing here.
Almost.
Beat took a quick glance behind himself and confirmed that, yes, Yoyo was tailing behind him. There wasn’t much distance between the two, and Beat wanted to remedy that. He slowed slightly, and Yoyo nervously slowed as well, even more than his opponent; it was suspicious that Beat would slow down during a race. When Beat jumped onto a rail and started grinding around a corner, however, Yoyo growled to himself and had to take a few seconds to get back up to grinding speed. Truly Beat was not only technically skilled, but excellent at predicting and using his rival’s moves against them.
By the time Yoyo had rounded the corner, Beat was out of sight. Yoyo cursed quietly to himself, huffing as he pushed himself up the rail to get a better viewpoint. He grinded up Benten Tower and stood at the top. He looked down over Benten-Cho, watching the lights blink and feeling the breeze on what little skin was exposed, listening to the cars in the distance and the incoherent conversations below him. Even though he was so familiar with the area, it had been a long while he’d really taken a step back and truly appreciated it. The serenity didn’t last long, however, as he spotted Beat skating towards the bottom of the rail to Yoyo’s left. Yoyo spun around once and jumped onto the rail, following it down. When he reached the bottom, he was full-speed barreling after Beat. Then, all of a sudden, life seemed to play out in slow motion.
Without even looking behind him, Beat drew his left arm to his chest and extended the other out as far as it could reach. He swung his right arm in time with his ankles turning, resulting in a near-flawless on-a-dime turn that Yoyo had nowhere near enough time to replicate. All Yoyo could do was follow Beat’s movements with his eyes, and watch as Beat’s threw a peace sign with his still-extended arm and stuck his tongue out. He’d lost almost no momentum thanks to the maneuver, which means that when time sped back up to normal, Beat was zooming almost full-speed in the exact opposite direction of Yoyo.
Beat didn’t bother looking behind himself to see if Yoyo was following this time. He kept his eyes forward, towards the garage. He was huffing, exhausted, but he was also exhilarated beyond belief. Despite the burning in his lungs and limbs, the adrenaline pushed him on and kept a smile on his face. As Beat jumped into the garage, he threw both of his arms straight up in the air.
“I won!” Beat cried hoarsely.
Beat slid directly into Gum’s arms, collapsing into a giggling mess. Gum met his laughter heartily, holding him up since he clearly wasn’t stable enough to stay standing on his own.
“Beat!” Gum said through laughter. “What’dya win?”
Beat only responded with more giggling that devolved into wheezing laughter. He slipped, gripping to Gum for support. Finally, Yoyo burst into the garage. He landed on the floor beneath the window and didn’t hesitate to explode into his own giggle fit.
“I-I won!” Beat yelled again once he’d regained some control of his breathing.
Beat let go of Gum and she helped aid him to the ground so he could sit.
“Damn, cuz!” Yoyo called back. He wiped his face off. “Don’t-Don’t think this is over!”
“Never,” Beat’s laughter died down and he put his head in his hands sleepily.
For the next few months, their races became routine. Almost every night, Yoyo would chase Beat through another area, and more than once he came dangerously close to bumping Beat’s hip against his own, but Beat had managed to avoid touching Yoyo at all for the time being. Logically he knew it would only matter if Yoyo touched his hip. Still, something in Beat warned him against letting Yoyo touch him at all. Moreover, Beat had only recently noticed that Yoyo was hip-bumping other people much less frequently than when they first met. It almost seemed like both of the boys were equally hyper-focused on the apparent competition. Beat sort of liked the attention, if he were being honest.
One day, about half a year after meeting, Beat was chilling in the garage, blasting music and dancing with Gum and Tab. The trio were unwinding for the day, a successful day of tagging and evading police together. Tab was mostly showing off as Rock It On blared, Beat just vibing to himself while Gum danced around the floor and cheered for her family. Over the music, the trio could hear someone climbing in through the window.
“Come dance with us!” Gum cried over the song.
From behind, Yoyo let out a hearty laugh and skated over to where the other three were centralized. Gum grabbed his wrists and lead him around the floor, and he happily followed her around. As Concept Of Love queued up, Gum spun around. She lost her grip on Yoyo, who stumbled into Beat, his left hip connecting to Beat’s right hip. Beat fell to the ground, having lost his balance from the surprise and anxiety of what had just happened.
“Oops, sorry,” Yoyo laughed. “Does that count if it was an accident?”
Beat scrambled up to his feet in a visible panic. He shot Gum a look quickly, and Gum took the hint. She didn’t know what exactly was happening, but she knew Beat well enough to usher Tab and herself out of the room.
“Whoa, dude,” Yoyo snickered again. “You five-by-five?”
Beat swallowed hard and leaned against a wall to keep himself stable. He pushed his pants and shirt away just enough to see, but Yoyo didn’t need to look at the mark to understand.
“Oh, fuck,” Yoyo mumbled and quickly copied Beat’s action.
The two boys didn’t even bother looking at their own marks, only at each other’s. On Yoyo’s hip was a large, colorful mark. Not black, but vibrant with reds and yellows and greens. And on Beat’s hip, the same thing. Beat let out a breath and slid down the wall. Yoyo skated over and sat beside him silently.
Understand, understand
Understand, understand
Understand, understand
The concept of love
“Yo, Beat,” Yoyo spoke up. There was a smile on his face.
Beat looked up.
“Wanna hear somethin’ dumb?”
“Sure,” Beat answered.
“I’ve been going around bumping into everyone for, like, years, bro. ‘Cause I knew what that black, uh, spot thing meant,” Yoyo started. “So like, I mean, I wanted’a meet ‘em. Only, after I started racing with you, droog, I stopped bumpin’ around so much!”
Beat scooted closer to Yoyo, so they were shoulder to shoulder. “Why’zat?”
Yoyo’s face scrunched into a massive, dorky grin. “‘Cause I didn’t want anyone else to be, ya know, the one!”
Beat snorted, a small laugh, and rested his head on Yoyo’s shoulder. “Damn, Yo, that was dumb.”
“I know, right?” Yoyo placed one arm around Beat’s shoulder gently. “Totally bogus.”
“Real bogus,” Beat said.
He closed his eyes. Now that he was here, now that this moment was here, he realized it wasn’t so bad. After spending so much time avoiding Yoyo’s touch, Beat realized how much he’d been hoping for this; how much he actually wanted Yoyo to touch him. He turned his head and pushed his face into Yoyo’s neck. They stayed there like that for far longer than either knew they probably should, the only reason either stirred was because of Gum coming in and advising them to sleep. Beat knew Gum would question and bully him tomorrow, but for tonight he just enjoyed Yoyo’s company.

Paintings ~ Part II
Summary: Loki fled his home, too tired of being the cause of his father’s constant disappointment. With help from Heimdall, he escapes to Midgard, the last place his father would look for him. In dire need of a job, he meets Y/N, a struggling artist trying to be recognised for her work. Can they help each other or are they holding one another back?
Masterlist
previously on Paintings: “Depends, are you Y/N?” You opened and closed your mouth a few times. Having recognised his face, you realise you were standing right in front of none other than Tony Stark, former CEO of Stark Industries and billionaire.
__________
“Uhm, huh- yes, yes I am. Pleased to meet you, sir.” You held out your hand for him to shake, trying to stop stumbling over your own words. Seriously, it’s English, what’s so hard about that?!
Tony Stark then took your hand, shaking it with a firm grip before releasing it and sitting back down. Wait, when did he get up?
“So, you’re making the new artwork?”
“Yup, that’s me, I’m the one.” God, you’re still acting like a fool. Get it together!
“So modern art is your niche?” You nodded. "And you’ll do any modern style?"
“Well, I focus on expressionism, although I am not bad when it comes to surrealism, for example Salvador Dali and his melting clocks. Kubism, abstract expressionism, acrylic, watercolour, I can do almost all expressionistic art forms with most materials.” You take on a proud tone, happy to talk art. This is where your comfort zone lies, your escape route, your go-to topic for a safe conversation.
“You’re in luck, I want something expressionistic, never been one for surrealism. You had anything in mind?” He was completely down to let you handle anything, as long as he knew what 'anything' contains.
“Not really, I need to make a painting suitable for a person but also make it suitable for their home and perhaps other occupants of the room. Would you rather we schedule a time for me to come take a look or do you want to email me some photos?” You got out your agenda, having always preffered writing things down instead of typing. It might have something to do with forgetting typed things, only remembering them when on paper.
“I think a visit would be better, right? Makes you get a feel of the room, the space, a more in-depth experience for a better result.” He was just grasping at ideas now, sipping his coffee calmly and leaning back in his chair.
“Hmm, yeah, you’re right, but some people are too busy or aren’t comfortable in letting me in their house so they email me.” It was indeed more difficult, but they weren't comfortable so you just had to work with what you had.
"Not to sound like an absolute douchebag, but my team did a background check and everything, they wouldn't let me just choose someone, they had to check them thoroughly. You're very lucky, by the way. I had to persuade them to let you do your thing. I believe you know what part made them doubt you?" You did know what he was talking about, and shame filled you to the brim.
About twelve years ago, you had an enormous fall-out with your family, resulting in them sabotaging your income by spreading awful rumours about you. Your income did decline drastically, making you nearly bankrupt. In the desperate need of money, you ended up working for Strak Industries, a company solely focused on copying and faking Stark Industrie products. From securitysystems and phones to merchandise, everything was copied. You got a job of replicating the stuffed animals as close as you could get with cheaper materials. The pay wasn't great but it got you back on your feet, ready to continue painting. Stark Industries and Strak Industries got in a huge fight, legal authorities getting involved. Because you had workes your way up to manager of the production of all the stuffed animals, you were put in a bad spot.
"yeah, sorry, I was on the brink of losing everything," you ended up saying, cursing yourself as soon as the words left your mouth. "losing everything?!" You could've said anything and you chose that?
Stark gave you a look, but thankfully didn't comment on the words.
"So, when do you want me to come by? I would prefer as soon as possible, but it's up to you." He opened his phone, looking on his agenda for a possible date. Scratching his goatee lightly, he pursed his lips before sighing and saying, "Would coming thursday work? Two days away?"
"Yes, absolutely. Any time in mind? Perhaps early morning or afternoon?"
Stark tought for a moment, excusing himself to look more thoroughly on his phone to see when he'd have time.
“How about 5 o’clock in the afternoon? would that work for you?" He tilted his head, eyes so intense it seemed as if they were looking right through you.
After finetuning the details, you finished talking and drove back to the shop, cursing yourself for taking so long.
Soon you arrived at your atelier, seeing Loki through the glass window reading a book.
You smiled to yourself. Loki was the kindest soul you've met in your life, gentle and soft like nobody else could ever be. It made you wonder if there was a possibility for something more. something intimate.
a crow, as black as the night, flew past, snapping you out of your thoughts. Your eyes followed the black bird before wandering back to the shop. Finally you moved, slowly walking towards the entrance.
the bell above the door jingled softly, letting Loki know someone entered. He looked up and smiled, slowly closing his book and moving towards you with so much grace it was impossible to look away.
“Hi Loki, I got to go, still need to finish that two window piece for Mrs. Barton and the final sketch for the mural that one woman, what’s-her-name, wanted. The blue, winter, ice-y vibe?” You rushed to the back of your shop, throwing your bags in a corner and running up the stairs to put on your older clothes, the ones that were allowed to get a bit of paint on them.
“The woman’s called Idina Menzel, the one who voices the lead character in that new movie, Frozen?” Loki has listened to you praise the trailers with such emotion, he took it up himself and researched the main characters, discovering that the woman who ordered a mural two weeks ago from your shop. The mural made more sense now, as well.
The words Loki spoke made you halt. Lead character in Frozen? She asked you, a small, unexperienced artist, to paint a mural for her? A smile began to grow on your face. Spinning around, you ran back to Loki.
“Oh my- she- she ‘s famous and bought something from me? This is huge! I will be known by a few circles of famous people now that Tony Stark and Idina Menzel ordered from me! Do you understand what this means? I can finally get recognised for my work, I can finally earn enough to buy my own place!” You barrelled full force into Loki, hugging him close. Loki himself slowly hugged back, unsure of what exactly to do.
Loki smiled. You were happier than you’ve veer been all year, even with the stress of performing good for famous people. Lost in his thoughts, Loki looked out the window. A black raven sat on the little bench across the street, looking right at him. No, he thought with a shock as his eyes grew large, not an ordinary black raven. This little bird was Diaval, loyal assistant to Maleficent, Loki’s distant relative. What is he doing here?
“Loki? Is something wrong?” His eyes flew back to yours when your words registered in his head.
“No, love, nothing’s wrong. I just realised I forgot to do something, could I be excused for a bit so I can go home and finish it?” He glanced outside, seeing Diaval still sitting there, quietly waiting. You let go of him, nodding your head.
“Of course you can, no problem. I got nothing planned for the rest of the day so the shop won’t be empty, you’re free to go.” With that, you hugged him one ast time, saying a quick goodbye before turning around and walking to your current project. One last look and wave, and Loki was out the door.
“Where is she, Diaval?” The raven flew to the right, landing in a small alley and morphing back to human.
“This way, she’s bought a new place down in Queens when she heard you were staying here.” Loki groaned. Ever since they found out about each other, Maleficent started acting as his big sister, watching all his moves like a hawk.
He followed Diaval into the alleyway, preparing for the inevitable Apparition he had to make.
“Alright, name the address, I’ll take us there,” Loki said, making his disdain clear in his voice. Diaval rattled the location, and off they were.
“Where are we?”
“The back of the diner a block away from your house, she put anti-Apparition-wards up, didn’t she?” At the last part, Diaval sheepishly nodded his head.
"Hello Loki."
"Maleficent." As was expected, Maleficent looked as stunning as the gods themselves, flaunting her body with a black. Maybe it was a family thing?
"I have come here to talk to you about important matters." As the words left Maleficent’s mouth, Loki's eyes flicked to hers. Important matters? With her resources it must be life-threatening to come to him for assistance.
"There have been... unusual sightings in Europe. It appears to be a form of magic, more powerful than I have ever seen in my entire life."
"You have any leads on the exact location?"
"It seems to be traveling. I have people running tabs on it. It started in England, then went off the radar for a while before reappearing in France, where it travelled through Belgium, into Holland. They're travelling east, getting closer to Germany as we speak."
What could there be in Germany, the northern part of it, that would be attractive to someone who possesses magic? You got the big cities, Dusseldorf, Berlin, maybe Hamburg? Or perhaps...
"Cologne. They're heading for Cologne." Maleficent looked at him weirdly.
"Why would they go to Cologne?"
"I visited this woman, truly magnificent, who took care of all mutants from Holland, Belgium and Germany. The school of Xavier was too expensive and small for mainland Europeans, so I helped set it up just outside the city," Loki admitted with a sigh. He had hoped to never see her again, one time was more than enough and he doesn’t know how she’ll react to him suddenly appearing out of nowhere after leaving her alone for eighty years.

Demon Splicing and Why the Clones Failed.
This is more like a research paper than a fan theory, but hey, I had fun. I’ll try to improv some citations at the bottom, but I don’t guarantee that Tumblr will let me keep them there.
Now, this is a HUGE, MASSIVE, LONG-ASS POST, and once more it is ultra-sciencey; so if you have any confusions, questions, or want to just look the other way and just go “eh, magic” then that is totally okay. I don’t, and won’t, claim to be any kind of authority on these things; I just needed an excuse to open my computer again and I guess do some intense research into etymology (that would be the study of anything with an exoskeleton, basically. I promise it is very much relevant to this theory.).
Summary/TLDR: Demons need specific qualities in their hosts in order to suit themselves, ergo they modify their host’s bodies by using Mutually symbiotic viruses, akin to those of the Polydnaviridae ingroup which coexists within several genera of parasitoid wasps, to alter the human genome. What we explore here is how they do so. Also, because it is intrinsically connected, we will also be dipping our toes into why, exactly, the clones weren’t “suitable” in all instances, as well as how demons may or may not select their hosts. This circles back to my previous post discussing the Twin’s and Paternity, and specifically the topic of genetic expression, though you do not need to have seen or read that post to understand what I’m talking about here. Also discussed is the matter of genes that humans lack, but which would seem to find their way in during possession; the production of feathers, the formation of additional limbs, proteins, and such which are simply not within the power of any existing virus we know of to alter .
One thing must lead to another however, so before we get into the biological science, we need to get into the hypothetical, cosmological stuff that is quantum physics. Didn’t see that one coming, did ya?
Demons and DNA:
We know from that one elusive panel of chapter 44 ( I think...) that demons have genetics - they have genes, which implies that they have, at the very least, DNA. The question then is how, but more so where - where did those genes come from?. Demons don’t have physical bodies, right...? Why would they need DNA?
Because maybe some of them do possess actual, physical “bodies”, or at least cells, that preside in Gehenna.
The Demon Kings are quite likely to be an exception rather than a rule, considering they were the first demons to have come into existence, or at the very least the first demons to have ever attained bodies -- which is precisely how demonkind may have obtained DNA in the first place, via a phenomena called horizontal transference.
Now, I’m going to contradict, in a sense, my other post here, and tell you to forget what you were taught about viruses in high school. Virology is a complicated school of biology, and viruses are extremely simple, and yet extremely complex organisms. Now, viruses typically contain RNA which allows the virus to reproduce once it is injected into the cells of its host by combining viral RNA with eukaryotic (for the sake of simplicity) DNA.
However, there are strains of viruses that contain DNA, not RNA. No one is completely sure how these viruses evolved, but one theory would suggest that these dnaviruses “stole” part of their genetic material from the hosts they evolved with, incorporating pieces of lipids and proteins to turn their RNA into functional DNA; this process of one organism “stealing” DNA from another is called horizontal transference, and it is how bacteria and other asexually reproducing organisms maintain genetic diversity and “evolve”.
But, you ask, how the bloody hell does a Virus have DNA? How does it replicate?
When most people think of viruses, they think of mobile ones, pathogenic ones - but dnaviruses are not usually pathogenic, instead highjacking the excretory or reproductive systems of their hosts and using their reproductive cells to spread genealogically from parent to offspring. One well-studied example of this is the polydnavirus found in Ichneumon wasps, which are themselves parasitoid. They reproduce by injecting their eggs into the bodies of paralyzed caterpillars, who then feed the hatching larvae with it’s living tissues. However, one problem the wasp faces with this method of reproduction is the caterpillar’s immune system, which could kill the eggs - were it not for the polydnavirus, which produces chemical signals that prevent the caterpillar’s immune system from destroying the precious egg that is it’s host cell. As the larvae develops, the polydnavirus is replicated into the cells of the larvae, and once it hatches it is literally born with the virus in it’s body. (I’ll let you go wild with the half-demon thing there, I’m here to talk about possession right at the moment.)
Ok, ok, but what does this have to do with demons? after all, demon possession is, in a way, “contagious” since demons can go from host to host.
Welcome then, to the world of multi-viral mutual symbiosis - fancy way of saying viruses can work together to meet the ends of one another in a host if it benefits both viruses. Demons may possess some form of this event, being somehow sentient (by means perhaps of primitive, conductive cells not unlike what you would find in a jellyfish) but ultimately composed of or utilizing not only one, but several strains of viruses to fulfil their parasitic ends, one which allows them to infect the host and modify existing DNA, and one which can incorporate it’s own DNA into that of the host to bring about desirable conditions. To that, I must add as a courtesy that those primitive conductive cells which could, in a way, offer sentience, may in fact be what comprises the physical manifestations of demon’s hearts. None of this is, of course, to explain demon magic, which is a subject I do intend to breach one of these days - but not today. Today, we do science.
This goes away to explain why Todou sprouted feathers, a phenomena that would not have otherwise been biologically possible given the constraints of human protein structure. That isn’t to say that it would be impossible for a virus to modify via RNA transcription keratinoid proteins to form hollow attachments, which is exactly what you find in polar bears and porcupines, but the structure of feathers is, I’m afraid, just too far off the mammalian path for it to be but a 0.03% likelihood via RNA transcription alone, meaning that it would have to have been the result of DNA that isn’t human.
Speaking of statistical probabilities:
Cloning and the Failure Thereof
Humanity has a hollywood-induced idea that cloning organisms is a fail-less system, when that could not be further from the truth. In point of fact, only about 3% of all attempted cloning experiments with everything from fish to sheep produce viable, healthy clones. This is because cloning is done, kind of ironically, in much the same way as a virus operates; by using the DNA and RNA of the existing mother’s cell’s to complete the chromosomal pairing up that normally happens in the zygote during fertilization. Because of this, the RNA transcribes, ideally, the same exact DNA code that the “mother” has; but here again we get into genetic expression, because though a clone is genetically the same as it’s parent, it is exactly BECAUSE it is genetically identical that recessive (and often in the case of some experimental animals, fatal) traits and gene combinations can occur, depending on exactly how the original, zygotic DNA is copied. Even when using the RNA of the same organism, transcription errors naturally occur -- and they occur so frequently, in fact, that very few cloning attempts are ever successful; that is, they either produce genetically weak, fatal-combination, infertile, or underdeveloped offspring that ultimately can’t be re-cloned or which can not reproduce, and therefore negate the incentive to clone an organism for it’s “healthy genes”.
Connecting the dots:
When a demon is cloned, it’s human DNA is cloned; but so are the genetic modifications of the dnavirus, which is why clones seem to have human superpowers. They are no loner 100% genetically human, and that opens the door to all kinds of genetic complications and probably meant that thousands, not hundreds, of clones were “discarded”, and hundreds died before they even lived. Simply put, it’s an absolute bloody miracle that the cloning thing worked at all, much less that Lucifer was able to remotely perfect the technique.
How he did so is not so much a mystery though; unlike what you would assume, with mammals at least, the more often you re-clone a clone, the “cleaner” it’s genetic code seems to become by phenomena of natural selection and artificial selection; clones with good genes are re-cloned, clones exhibiting bad genes are culled or die on their own, and so on and so on until you get a good sized population of identical clones. With the added fuel of the elixir to make growth happen phenomenally fast, it’s not too surprising that he has a private stock of cloned bodies to inhabit whenever he likes. (Which gave me big Orochimaru vibes, just sayin’).
As for the RNA virus body, I suspect that is retained with the demon at all times, which makes sense because once and RNA virus stops replicating it’s RNA into the host, the host cells re-fix the “broken” codes and eventually replaces the alien DNA created by the virus with it’s own; however, a dnavirus’ DNA gets worked semi-permanently into the system of it’s host, since it has it’s own completed code which is then, reversedly, transcribed over and over by the host’s RNA transcription, which is why dnaviruses went undetected by science until about 20 years ago, and why, God forbid, if there was ever a pathogenic dnavirus, we would all be royally screwed because even the best immune system on earth can’t detect a dnavirus because our immune systems rely on identification markers dependent on RNA viruses; oddly, however, so does every other organism, meaning there literally is not a single living thing, including caterpillars and spiders who are victims directly of “pathogenic” polydnaviruses, has an immune system that could find the damn things. They utilize the host’s own RNA to transcribe their DNA, and therefore go almost completely undetected by whatever they infect.
Speaking of which, let’s talk about:
Immunity and Prions
If Demons rely on RNA viruses to primarily infect their host, then it would make sense why some people would be more resistant than others; however, there is a compelling aspect of demon possession which makes me think that it is the other way around - everyone is resistant, until they are not.
Demons typically possess bodies which have weak-minded and psychologically stressed individuals behind them. Stress weakens the immune system, but it does so in specific ways; and certain viruses in real life are programmed to take advantage of these specific measures more than others.
Right now in the US, there is a nasty epidemic of CWD, Chronic Wasting Disease, spreading through native deer populations on the east coast. This “zombie disease” is a virus that infects the nervous system of the deer (along with cattle and sheep) and forms prions - folded proteins that are then replicated, and replicated, and replicated; and like cancer of the brain, they just keep on replicating and replicating, eating up the animal’s energy reserves and drastically impacting their behavior and bodily functions, starting by supressing and outright destroying their immune system. Mad Cow Disease is a more famous example of a prion disease in the same family as CWD, except that those prions migrate; they move into the soft tissues of the animal and make every single part of it impossible to eat without also contracting the prion, which contains the virus; and MCD is not remotely picky about it’s host, since it affects a very basic protein structure. Any and everything from birds to reptiles to humans can be infected by MCD and it is completely fatal.
My point is, that CWD and MCD both primarily infect animals exhibiting high levels of stress hormones, which is why outbreaks happen primarily during the breeding seasons for these animals. Not only that, but the virus then directly attacks the animal’s immune systems and opens them up to every kind of secondary infection you can imagine.
However, prion diseases and even just plain old viruses can do the exact opposite as well. HIV is a common virus that kills you by making your immune system hyperresponsive, not by shutting it down; it becomes so responsive, in fact, that it attacks healthy tissues. Prion diseases which affect insects also do this, creating folded proteins in the nervous system of the bug that trigger it’s immune system to continuously flood the body with antibodies until it is just too exhausted to do so, and the insect’s body decays as a result of secondary infection.
It could be that this is the case of demons as well. Prions would be valuable in affecting the behavior of the host, though not necessary; they would, however, make the ingestion of a possessed person almost guaranteed to infect you, since most viruses just don’t have the defenses on their own to tackle stomach acid, but a prion virus does.
To recap:
Demons use DNA and RNA viruses to infect and modify their host to their liking, perhaps using the assistance of prions to aid in endurance and transmissibility. Because of this, cloning is a gamble of “what DNA will I pull out of the box today” since the DNA virus’ DNA, and possibly even any prions, is left behind even after the parasitic demon leaves; however, the RNA virus is inert once it leaves a host body, and therefore is retained by the demon within whatever primitive cells they may carry in their demon hearts, which may be taken from some immutable “form” or body that they possess on the other side of the divide (in Gehenna); these alien forms may be the byproduct of their first ever possession, using, perhaps, horizontal transference to absorb some of the DNA from their first (and possibly even subsequent) host and then re-incorporate it into subsequent hosts, which is how Amaimon would be reptilian in spite of having a mammal body; because he perhaps, first possessed or found genetic favor of a reptile of some kind and “borrowed” the DNA from them via horizontal transference, since it worked for him. This can then be applied in turn to all other demons, or at least demon kings.
DISCLAIMER:
I spent literally a week researching this stuff, but I am welcome to criticism of my shoddy work. Also, I am in no way saying this is technically right; it’s just a theory after all, and you’re more than welcome to disagree. :)
If anyone wants to add on, feel free. :) I think I’m done for the week.

1)Quick query here- Was just thinking about Toga’s new-found quirk powers and I just realised- is it possible for her to copy One For All? I don’t mean just with the base power like with Monoma, but also granting her partial access to some of the stockpiled energy- Toga’s Abilities do seem designed to contrast against and compliment twice’s own ability to copy things, and he can create constructs with access to all the memories and Powers of the originals, so it makes some sense that her own
(okay so I’m just going to copy/paste the rest of the asks and edit them together since that’s easier to read than screenshots. hope that’s all right.)
…power copying might give herself greater access to the abilities of her targets, especially since we see how overpowered Twice’s Quirk can be now he’s not afraid of creating himself again. When she copied Izuku before, she didn’t have the time or the inclination to attempt to use his powers (and wasn’t aware of it as an option to boot) but now she is, it could be a way of getting access to the power that’s the greatest potential threat to the league.
Actually, thinking about It, All 3 of the ‘copy-quirkers’ that we’ve seen have had contrasting abilities that grant different benefits and applications to the same theme of copying powers- not to mention whatever Ujiko’s up to that lets him keep creating nomu’s with powers like the captured league members. Twice’s quirk lets him duplicate objects and people, alongside their powers, but doesn’t directly affect his body, unless he duplicates himself, and then that’s just double twice, no added superpowers or anything, just greater vulnerability to folding like a cheap tower of cards in the rain if someone roughs you up too much. However, since he isn’t producing the powers himself and putting strain on his body by using them, he can theoretically create an army of the same quirks, even getting round the ‘2 only’ rule by making more twices to make more powers with. However, he needs precise data of more than just what the quirk wielder looks like, but also their exact proportions and personalities to effectively produce more of them.
Monoma, in contrast, can copy anybody’s powers with just a touch, even without knowing what the powers are exactly, and can even copy multiple powers at once, but he’s constantly limited by a timer on his borrowed power, can’t duplicate energy based/ accumulated quirk benefits, and can’t ever really train with abilities to master them to the extent of the original wielders, hence he relies on guile and trickery until he can learn enough about the powers to make use of them when it counts. Actually, between both Monoma and One for All, I’m getting a bit of a shared ‘bio-energy’ vibe in relation to their shared ability to replicate the mutations and power sets of others within themselves, using their targets original bodies as a template to transform their own genetics on the fly to utilise the same powers. The difference being that AFO can completely separate, absorb and store the unique energy and powers within himself for later use or distribution as he sees fit- he even seemed to indicate that taking the powers gives him an instinctual understanding of the type and utility of the quirk, albeit not enough to use well without proper training and dedication to fulfilling the requirements of the quirk, whereas Monoma can only ever ‘trace’ a basic version of the power from those he copies from, duplicating a starter version of the same quirk with an expiration date before the inferior version deteriorates too much to be used anymore. Hell, we even saw this copy degradation thing happen before, between Midoria and All Might. Passing on his quirk via his genetic sample resulted in OFA duplicating itself- creating a brand-new amped up version of itself within Izuku that feeds off and empowers his own bio-energy alongside the stored quirks/bio-energy of the previous successors, allowing him to reach heights they never could with all the accumulated powers feeding into each other. Meanwhile, All Might gets left with a weakened copy of his old powers, no longer sustained by the core he allowed to flow into Izuku, and thus, like a battery off the charger, his powers got weaker every time they were used until he’s left with only 1% power before completely losing it altogether.
With that in mind, Toga’s quirk initially seemed only to allow her to copy the appearance of those who blood she swallowed, but now we know she can also copy the quirks and various powers that come with them, even without knowing much about the target (unlike twice) but not being able to effectively use them without having studied the target’s beforehand (like Monoma). Presumably this is why she didn’t transform into any of the more obviously mutated students, like Tsuyu, or Shoji- in the case of the latter, she would have found him uncute, and wouldn’t have wanted to turn into him, but if she had duplicated Tsuyu’s appearance, including the whole long tongue thing, it would have been more obvious she could copy the physical changes that made some students able to use their powers in the first place, thus her own power copying wouldn’t have been as big a surprise. Since we don’t know the limits of this new ability to absorb both appearance and powers through her own quirk, isn’t it possible that Toga’s ability will allow her to go farther in copying Izuku’s quirk than Monoma’s did? After all, unlike any of the others she needs to directly ingest the genetic material of her target to absorb their essence for her quirk to activate, which, given Midoria technically did the same thing to get OFA from All might, might mean she’s capable of absorbing and replicating more of the power than the other’s get through touch/mental understanding. She’s technically replicating and adapting the bio-energy of her targets to take their appearance and powers, giving her a similar power set to Izuku himself, and just because It’s impossible for Monoma to do it, doesn’t mean that there isn’t a quirk capable of forcefully copying OFA fully charged off Izuku- at least I think this new Power-set gives her a greater chance than most at pulling it off, assuming she can get enough of his blood stockpiled.
first off, I love when people get really in-depth analyzing the series like this. this was fun to read!
regarding Toga being able to copy OFA, it’s an interesting thought, but I have a suspicion that she would more than likely run into the same issue as Monoma if she tried. she copies the DNA of her opponents, including their quirks, and yes, we have seen that OFA is passed down via DNA. but – and this is crucial – we’ve also seen that that’s not the only factor in it being properly passed down. specifically, OFA, as far as we know, can only properly be transferred to someone if the user wills it. that’s the deal. you can steal the bare-bones quirk, but the power accumulated with it only goes if the user gives their say-so.
it’s not very scientific to say the least, but this part of OFA seems to be more of a spiritual thing. there was talk of people’s wills and such. so even if Toga – and Twice for that matter – can copy people’s physical traits and even duplicate their memories, it seems to me like a person’s soul is the key to actually transferring OFA’s whole kit and caboodle.
having said all that, this post helped to make something finally click for me that I’ve been trying to sort out for a while now, so thank you for that! new OFA theory post incoming shortly, lol.
