I think some people genuinely forget that Jean is not a main character in the game
#saw someone complain that he wasn't on a fanart. every 3rd de fanart is about him. is that not enough? is it not enough that there are more#fanfics of him than the main female characters? god forbid someone doesn't include this minor side character who shows up for 5 minutes

Sorry but am I the only one that thought that episode…sucked? Like it was straight up bad. Horrible pacing, no wrap up of all the random characters and plot lines they’ve thrown around all season (the tuskegee airmen, Westgates spying, literally all the guys beside like the main 4). (Seriously it makes me so mad that the three redtails got all of 5 seconds of screen time, almost no lines. Literally what was the point of introducing them other than to pretend the show was iNcLuSiVe) Even at the end of BoB and the Pacific you get a much better idea of what happened to all the remaining guys. In this they’re like what happened to DeMarco or Hambone or Brady or (insert character here) we don’t know! ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ The concentration camp scene felt shoehorned in compared to how it was done in BoB. Unless that actually happened to Rosie (which i haven’t heard anything about) but it was just like.. ok? It all felt so rushed and emotionless to me. Maybe I’ve just fallen out of love with MoTA but it’s been downhill for me since episode 6 or so.
i already made a little (read: long) post-finale write-up here, where i talk about the use of the tuskegee airmen, l'sandra, and overall editing/pacing issues i felt the show had. but i don't agree with the notion that adding the redtails was in any way insincere or trying to halfass being "iNcLuSiVe", i just think they suffer from this show's obvious time constraints. and to summarize what i wrote in my linked post, there's a limit to what white writers/directors/producers can do when creating a story about black people. there are some stories i'd feel uncomfortable with them telling on their own, truth be told. dee rees wasn't the sole nonwhite director, but she Was the only black one. i think she did her job well given the limitations and i appreciate that they let her direct those episodes, rather than leaving it up to a team of white people trying their best to tell a black story.
the worst i can say about the finale is that it didn't feel like That strong of finale, tho i wouldn't go as far to say it "sucked" or call it "straight up bad". i liked it plenty, it's just the weakest of the hbo war finales imo.
as for the concentration camp scene, artistic license was taken with both shows. unlike what's seen in the BoB, easy company wasn't the first to arrive at kaufering, and there's 0 mention of the all-japanese american 552nd who helped them liberate it). similarly, rosie rosenthal did assist in liberating those camps, though it would've been after the events shown this episode. idk if he saw one in that up-close way seen in this episode, but he could've (i should research this when i have time). plus, it would've felt weird Not having him acknowledge them at all. "shoe-horned" is an odd term to use here imo, as both scenes more-or-less center a jewish character (BoB's liebgott and MotA's rosie). the former show has survivors the characters can help, the latter shows no one left to help. the former has all of easy company there, the latter has rosie there all alone. rosie's scene felt deeply personal in that way. at the end of the day, both scenes are communicating different things. that doesn't make one better than the other when they aren't trying to be identical. (disclaimer, i'm not jewish, so i'd be interesting hearing from the perspective of someone who wrt whether or not they felt it was "shoe-horned")
i can understand if you've disliked the show post-episode 6 (and episode 6 was a very strong episode i'm ngl). eps 7 and 8 were weaker in many ways, even to me, so i get it. everyone's entitled to their own opinion (i'd be a hypocrite saying otherwise). just understand that this blog is run by someone who overall enjoys this show despite its flaws! basically, i encourage you to take this energy and make your own posts.
#masters of the air#hbo war#e9#asks#long post#masters of the air spoilers#mota spoilers#all the hbo war finales are different. i don't think MotA's is as strong but like#my fav hbo war show is still BoB and even Then i don't think it has a better finale than TP. and i dislike a lot of TP! like A Lot!#and Even Then we don't get a good idea about what happens to a lot of the minor-er characters in TP once they leave#anyone who isn't sledge or leckie (rip basilone) is hand-waved-'they went home'-away#not every show needs a sandlot ending w/ a voiceover going:#'[NAME] got really into the [INSERT DECADE] and no one ever saw him again' like they did to webster (rip webster)#and again! i'm mixed about the redtails. but i can Very Clearly See this show getting released without including them#which wouldve left many people (justifiably!) upset that they weren't shown when they were Literally there in the same pow camp#i'll give the hbo war team a lot of shit about a lot of things (despite the enduringly positive energy i try to keep up here)#but i Have to give MotA props for Trying. i don't see faux inclusion i just see it as not quite hitting the mark but an attempt was made#and i think that's worth Something given neither BoB or TP bothered trying#(like i think there was a missed opportunity in TP not mentioning what's happening to japanese americans on the home front)#this got away from me (i'm also opinionated) but while i can agree with you about how the show feels rushed#i do take issue with the idea that they were pretending to be inclusive. i'll blame money time and covid19 before i blame bad intention#maybe that's controversial here but it Is my blog. so.

I might be playing DND with a few folks later this year (when I am less busy than I am right now) - and I am already rotating possible characters in my mind!
Klee here is already on my number 1 spot & I am thinking way too much about his backstory already. Oh, to be a little guy who would like to rage, but also cooks questionable meals for the party! 🍀🍳
#art#original art#dnd character#kobold#oc talk#newtafterdark#Klee unfortunately uses any kind of thing as ingredients#including spell components#I will roll a dice for every meal which will determine what minor potion effect or wild magic spell it will inflict on the party#ps: Klee is German for “clover”... because he's green but also bc he ate clover blossoms as a hatchling

Been thinking about different approaches to retelling fairy tales/folktales/classics, and I'm curious what y'all's take is . . .
Elements include plot and specific plot beats, characters, items, locations, specific scenes, themes, and so forth.
For further clarification:
A Snow White retelling written with the thought that all elements must be included would have all the iconic elements (princess, wicked queen, magic mirror, seven dwarves, poisoned apple, prince waking Snow White somehow) but would also work in the elements that are less iconic (the queen's blood falling on the snow and prompting her wish for Snow White, the huntsman bringing the queen an animal's heart in place of SW's and the queen eating it, the enchanted/poisoned laces and comb, the iron shoes, etc.).
A Snow White retelling written with the thought that only the most iconic elements have to be included would have some form of wicked queen, princess, magic mirror, and poisoned apple and the same basic plot, but would leave out or change other elements, even major ones, if they didn't serve the story (e.g., dropping the laces and comb, changing seven dwarves into a trio of androids, letting someone other than the prince wake Snow White).
Feel free to reblog and put thoughts in tags/replies/reblogs/whatever.
#polls#taleweaver speaks#I tend to land on the 'most major elements must be included' or 'the most iconic elements must be included'#I have a friend who will try to include every element possible (down to the color of a minor character's hat)#fairy tale retellings#writing

Based on something that happened a few months ago that ruined my whole week
#trashcreatyre's art#take a wild guess what the characters are#like they interacted with EVERY post of those two including all the ones where i was blatantly like ‘they are siblings’ and had other#characters in the comics/drawings that called them siblings before they tried to follow me and i checked their blog to find the horrors#n e way#trash rambles#comic#like#i get that they never interacted in canon#and they were only ever in the same shot/scene like twice#but even if you dont see them as siblings i still feel like its kinda fucked to ship them on multiple levels#one of the main ones being that one of them is a minor (which i feel like a lot of people forget which also sucks) and the other is 100% not

I HATE FANDOM WANK YALL ARE UNHINGED. VERY NEGATIVE BTW
#post (bad) was like 'adults need to take responsibility for what kids see online even publically posted fanwork'#it INCLUDED the sentence 'parents should monitor their kids internet more' and implied that people arbitrarily designated minors#dont have the impulse control to not look at content with warnings#all of this is not fucking true. children are people#and then every note arguing with the original post is like 'can we not have ONE SPACE without FUCKING minors... 😮💨'#'why is our responsibility to raise peoples kids for them' 'this implies that non kid friendly content shouldnt exist'#the last one is 100% true for the record but i think what yr getting at is that this random 'antishipper' on the internet#is responsible for like. sesta/fosta. no lmfao get real#and EVERY ONE OF THESE NOTES. is still fully accepting what the original post posits#that people arbitrarily designated minors are unable to resist barging into fan spaces#this is not true. kids are actually able to display the required self control in most cases#it doesnt come from a material condition of being a teenager. it sure as hell doesnt come from lack of brain development#people under 18 (age chosen by the government) are not easily impressed animals who just cant resist looking at triggering things#and then like. start whining about it because of their delicate constitution#the people you are talking about have every marker of 'adulthood'#theyre just a convenient pawn for yall to bitch at each other about shipping fictional characters#thats the only capacity that some people give a fuck about children in and it shows.

now that ive set the record straight that half of my rats are awful people to varying degrees i can go back to the regular content of woobifying them
#by varying degrees i mean petthri & tvekks are not awful at all (minor flaws that every living person has aside) but i had to include them#but also joking aside im kinda trying to go for nuance for most of these. even if a lot of the shit they do is unquestionably inexcusable#emphasis on *trying* btw im awful at this whole character writing business lol#like i dont really want to have cartoon villain Just Evil For The Sake Of Evil characters (love everyone who does tho)#im just intrigued having a bunch of very deeply flawed people who don't necessarily /seem/ all that bad in some aspects#ramble shmamble#these tags read really really edgy. like big 'such deep much wow' energy. that was not my intention fnjekrnke#budgie plays gw2

no see I WILL write something eventually, I haven’t been putting it off, I’ve just been uhhhhh cultivating the story for a couple of years yeah yeah
#stop cultivating and start harvesting idiot#no but I CAN’T write until I have at least a dozen books of story ready to go#how am I supposed to foreshadow anything if I don’t know what’s going to happen 500 chapters later???#how am I supposed to write a character even a minor one if I don’t have their entire future backstory and parent’s backstory planned out??#I can’t worldbuild unless I plan out all of the major cities including their political systems religions economy food production trade etc#also I just don’t want to sit down and write#so I just sit an worldbuild in my head all day#I have been for like two years now this is the longest I’ve seriously ‘worked on’ (ie daydreamed) a story in my head#and it’s really cliche and has a billion well worn tropes but it’s like… this is my comfort world building#and by comfort I mean really kinda fucked up world but whatever every edgelord or loser with an over active imagination has one#I need to read more people’s uhh… like.. not published authors… like tumblr users writing or whatev. like what is it called ao3? that stuff#not to be negative to them or anything but to like hype myself up#like see you don’t have to be a big named author to put your mind out there#I’m just kind of babbling here#suddenly reminded that a book I like John Dies At The End was originally released chapter by chapter online#so like… you don’t have to be like ‘this has to be put out whole in one book to be real writing’#I just need to write for fun but im a very shy boy 🥺#im fucking 34 im not a little boy I have to remind myself#anyway… if any mutuals read this much and you write online you should message me something you have that you like so I can read it#and I’ll be extra sweet and supportive and happy bc you’ll be helping me and I’ll get to support you#or whatever. I dunno. this is dumb. I’m sorry for wasting your time! jeez!#you can ignore this#text

I love my shows but if I see one more piece of queer media say "sex is what makes us human" then I just might turn into the joker
#y'all know i love 911 and i'm also loving sense8 so so much#but idk. for two shows that are about being seen and being queer and being human they're leaving aro/ace people out in the rain#and like. i know i can't expect them to be perfect shows that include every single minority because that's unrealistic and puts queer media#at a much higher standard than other media. which is ofc ridiculous.#but idk there's something to be said for watching a show about being unapologetically queer and hearing that my identity is invalid#at the same exact time#and the fact that it happens with literally every single piece of queer media i have ever consumed takes it from a mild annoyance#to an Actual Thing (tm)#because there isn't a single show (that I'VE watched anyway) where i feel validated in my identity#even in queer media.#and like. i can count on ONE HAND the number of canon aro/ace characters#and most of them are usually erased for the sake of ships in the fandom#it's just. tiring.#and obviously i'm so so grateful for queer media like 911 and sense8!! they're so profound and diverse and i love them so much!!!#but it's possible to be grateful for representation and also be disappointed about the lack of it at the same time#and that's what i am.#i just get so tired of being constantly blasted by aphobia/arophobia even from shows that are supposed to be about queerness and connection#sigh. ignore me i'm being bitter for no reason again :/#winter speaks

This young man displayed the true prowess of alchemy to all, bringing with him a massive corpus of wisdom that even the Sumeru Akademiya did not possess. "The universe is heaven reversed, and the earth is a dream lost to time. This is dust, the most basic form of complex life." As if to provide evidence for this claim, Albedo lifted the burnt ash of the flower that once grew atop a Dendro Slime's head. Seconds later, a Cecilia sprouted forth from the ash in his hand. "And this… is new birth." (Albedo: Character Story)
When I've been wrecking my brain over whether or not Genshin draws the correlation between dust and ashes, and I happen to look into Albedo because of his tie (we can... call it that) to alchemy, and even the art of Khemia specifically which is the much more ancient form of it, and there it is. Now excuse me as I go ramble in my tags a little incoherently...

While I'm MD posting, I find it so incredibly funny that the ship name for a character who wears a short skirt and garters x a character who wears thigh highs and no pants is called oilrose. Most other ships in that fandom are portmanteaus like you'd expect, but this one pairing is an exception just so they can be called "wet android pussies'". That is the horniest thing I've ever heard
#To be fair I think there's also a poetic meaning behind the name#Oil is every bodily fluid for an android; including blood. Roses have thorns#It's reminescent of how both these gals are skilled hunters#But also. Look at them. Come on#Tangeant: I'm pretty sure none of these characters have ages; but they're all very teen coded with references to stuff like prom#However i refuse to believe these two are minors simply because of the way they are dressed#My personal ages headcanon: uzi is 17; n is 17 or 18; v is 18; lizzy is 18; j is 19#I don't remember anyone else who exists

wirt from otgw really is one of the best written teenage characters ever i think. like. he's 15-16-ish and wants people to take him seriously SO badly, but he also struggles to take responsibility for most things. he's dripping with anxiety. he overcomplicates everything in his mind but sometimes he has lapses of impulse. he can be surprisingly blunt when he's angry. he can't help but hate his little half-brother (and stepdad) out of spite and it takes both of them nearly dying for him to start working through those feelings. he's really creative but he keeps his interests in poetry and the clarinet a secret because he thinks it's fucking embarrassing. he reads real estate magazines and knows a lot about architecture and interior design, which is such a random little detail but i love it. he's self-conscious and lowkey suicidial and always assumes the worst in other people's view of him, but BASICALLY EVERYONE BACK HOME LIKES HIM, including the girl he has a massive crush on, and he just can't see it because he never makes an effort to reach out. every minor stepback feels like the end of the world to him. he has no idea who he is or what he wants.

In various places -- here, the bird app, even YouTube comments -- I keep running into people with some variation of the same question:
"Does Scum Villain have a teacher/student romance?" And every time I want to answer with: No, But Also Yes, But Also Not Really, It's Complicated (And That's On Purpose.)
Which is an answer that's too long to fit in a tweet or a YT comment, but fortunately tumblr has no (effective) post limit! So here I go.
1 - No
In the very straight forward porn cliche sense of "oh but professor, I really ~need~ to pass this class or my life will be ruined, can't I do ~anything~ to get you to change my grade?" *bats lashes* and "Hoho, my pretty young teen student, I've got your good grade right here in my pants, if you ~apply~ yourself..." then no.
No sex or romance between a teacher and their student in the bounds of a teacher-student relationship happens in this book. No deliberate grooming of an underage student on the part of a teacher occurs in this book. No sex or a romance between an adult character and an underage character occurs in this book, nor is the adult 'waiting' for the minor to reach adulthood to initiate one.
2 - But Also Yes
No sex or romance between a teacher and their student in the bounds of that relationship happens in this book. Two people who were formerly in a teacher and student relationship do enter into a sexual and romantic relationship by the end of the book. Also the nature of the society they're in further means that even though they are no longer in the schooling environment, it is socially assumed that the deference owed by a student to their teacher lasts forever, even after the student leaves that environment, and they continue to regard themselves and refer to themselves in those roles even though the teacher no longer strictly speaking has authority over the student.
Also, the student was really hot for his teacher even when he was still a student. (The teacher was oblivious to this fact.)
3 - But Also Not Really
By the time sex and romance is even on the horizon for these characters, their relationship has so drastically changed from that of a "teacher and student" that it is barely recognizeable as such. The power/authority dynamic between a teacher and their student is subsumed pretty much entirely by the facts that:
A. The 'student' has become a medeival fantasy warlord of such unsurpassable magic and might that literally no other person in this world can stand up against him, 'teacher' included, and the 'teacher' is well aware of that.
B. Also, the 'student' is metaphysically endowed (heh) with the Protagonist Halo, a literally active force within the setting they're part of, which means that not only can he not be defeated, he ontologically cannot be denied anything that he desires; what he wants, he gets, and what he doesn't want, cannot be forced on him.
C. ...But also, the teacher in this setting is a metaphysical outsider to the world order the student is part of, which means that he is aware of all of the above, and can and does manipulate it to suit his own agenda, which may or may not align with giving the student what he wants at any point in time. Assuming that the teacher has the correct understanding of what the student wants. (He doesn't.)
D. ........But also also, for all his power, one harsh word from him can destroy him. For all his knowledge, one tear can devastate him. (Which one? Both.)
4 - It's Complicated (On Purpose)
*throws the chalk against the wall*
Between a teacher and their student, who has the power? Between an emperor and a scholar, who has the power? Between a hero and the villain he is predestined to destroy, who has the power? Between a character and the reader who's read ahead to the end of the story, who has the power? Do we find some of these power imbalances more acceptable than others? And if so, why do we?
Trying to track Who Has The Power or Who Has An Unfair Advantage socially, physically, and metaphysically between this particular pair of characters is damn near impossible and that's on purpose.
The Scum Villain's Self Saving System is a lot of things, but one thing that absolutely defines it is that it is a parody. It's a parody and a deconstruction of a lot of things -- the 'stallion' genre, the 'isekai' genre, the 'pay-per-chapter webnovel' genre, the 'gay drama' genre and, most relevant to this conversation, it is a deconstruction of teacher-student romance.
What kind of a teacher-student romance has a clueless, fish-out-of water NEET in the role of the Wise Old Mentor? What kind of a teacher-student romance has a black-hearted, demonic, domineering feudal warlord in the role of the Blushing Virginal Student? What kind of a teacher-student romance has the two principals so close in age -- by the end of the book, they may be as little as a year apart -- that they're more like peers than teacher and student? What kind of audience are we, going into a story like this one and finding ourselves cheering for the teacher to fall in love and lust with his student, only to be disappointed when that doesn't happen because the teacher fails for three books straight to recognize love and lust when it's literally looking him in the face and crying?
Asking "does Scum Villain have a teacher-student romance?" is sort of like asking "does Galaxy Quest have a lot of high science fiction concepts?" No, but also yes, but also not really. It's complicated, and that's on purpose.
