Life has been lifing itself up recently, and wow, new fandom brainrot is so real. And so once again I'm at a point of where I said with the last chapter of AWH that it wouldn't take me two months to get the next chapter out. Welllll, you see... we're past that.

But I've appreciated everyone who has read and continues to read my series -- both Into the Future, Out of the Past, and the Ranger series. I promise I have not forgotten about them (yes, including God in the Midst -- I will return to you again, I promise)

Chapter 9: Breaking Faith and Other Things (Part II)

“So, you’re the Wildling,” the guard captain observed as she watched Varric fiddle with a mechanism until a twang of a popped spring uttered out and he breathed a sigh of relief. “I honestly thought Varric was having me on.”  “I’d never lie to you, Aveline,” Varric chuckled as he tucked his thieves kit back into his belt.  Aveline glared down at him. “You lied to me about what you had for breakfast this morning.��

finally. i'm doing one. and it's about kressa again. yay <3

Your bones itch. Your fingers shake with the urge to wrap your hands around her throat as she speaks. Her blood in your mouth, under your nails, in your hair, you will rip her apart until never again can she love and hurt (for they are the same thing). But she doesn’t see the hatred in your eyes. She just keeps talking.  Clever, special, indomitable, she says, as if that will save her.  But you do not think that she wants to be saved, for the fact of it is that she does not think that you will kill her. It’s in her eyes, the almost-kindness of her smile. She is confident. Most people cower even when you mask your urges, like there is something so off putting, so repellent about you that it is felt in the very air they breathe, but this woman does not falter. She takes it in like sweet vapour, and with her eyes she asks for more, she wants more, she wants you. She wants you back.  She thinks she loves you. Or a version of you that does not exist anymore, or perhaps never did. And you almost laugh when she promises to kill you, like it is an honour or a noble sacrifice or a harsh necessity. And then she promises to stay with you, as if that will cool the burn of death.  In the end, the only thing that soothes you is her blood, and when she does not have enough of it to satisfy, you kill every one of her companions. When you read her notes later you will discover that one of them is her husband, and you laugh and laugh and laugh because you know, though you do not feel it anymore, that she loved you more than she ever did him.  And maybe you loved her too, but she is blood and bones and guts now, sprawled on the floor, her insides out, like she was never alive to begin with. Her love as fragile as her body.

The way i wrote a 2500word chapter one to a new project (Blackwood Mountain) and about a 2k oneshot for a different fic (Dr. Oz and his Final Girl) and im itching to start chp 2 but i have to go to work

Needlessly close reading and long commentary on chapter 57 and how the audience actually has an extremely limited view on what Marcille has been like over the course of her life.

I am once again thinking about how pre-dungeon Marcille is so quiet and stoic that she seems like a completely different person. How jarring chapter 57 is for the audience. Like you have Marcille, who has been just the most blindingly expressive person with resting baby face

And then the chapter drops a title page of Marcille hearing from Falin for the first time in four years and it's like.

Who is that. Genuinely. Would you even realize that's Marcille without the context clues?

And then the chapter just keeps coming in with the sucker punches.

We have SEEN Marcille meet strangers. It was never with this understated of a smile.

literally who the hell is this. the few times the audience gets to see some Signature Marcille Faces that they're used to is when she finally gets to see Falin again

when she's testing out her new spells

(and when Laios and Falin are fantasizing about her being their damsel in distress, funnily enough)

And then finally. Finally you get to a fully recognizable Marcille when she fucking DIES and comes back to life to geek out about necromancy.

We know she loves magic. We know she loves Falin. So it's not so surprising that she wouldn't be able to keep a mask up when thinking or talking about the things she loves. But why the mask in the first place? Where does it come from? It's tempting to think that, maybe, Falin's departure just hurt her so much that it turned her into a quiet person.

But that's only half true. If you go back, the first instance you see of this incredibly mild personality is actually introduced much earlier, in chapter 17.

What if she was always like that. What if her default after her father died was to hold people at arm's length, to never really emote past being polite and friendly. What if Falin was the first person who was able to bring her out of her shell, and when she left, Marcille just went back to how she was.

And when comparing her detached demeanour with someone else...

It's not exact, but wouldn't you say there's a resemblance? Wouldn't you think she might be trying her best to imitate what she saw of her own mother working as an accomplished mage?

It would certainly explain why she's hiding behind her portrait in her nightmare, at least.

We aren't told that Marcille has been distancing herself from everyone around her using a mature and dignified personality she modelled off her mother. But we sure as hell are shown it, I think.

Kageyama's backstory only being revealed near the very end of the series is really interesting from a meta perspective.

For reference, his chapter is 387 out of 402. That's 96% of the way in.

To contrast, other characters like Tsukishima and Yamaguchi's backstories are shown in Chapters 87-88.

Now, we do get the explanation for his "King of the Court" title in Chapter 6, at the start of the series, but we don't see how he got to that point, or why he started playing volleyball in the first place like Tsukishima's and Yamaguchi's stories show.

It creates this situation where, despite being the deuteragonist, the character our protagonist, Hinata, is practically glued to the entire series, we barely know anything about him.

We don't even know he has a sister until that point whereas other characters' siblings like Natsu, Saeko, Akiteru, Alisa have all made appearances way before then. Even Oikawa's sister, though we don't see her, we at least know she exists because of Takeru.

He's both closed off to us (the audience) as well as the other characters in the series, and this results in them finding him rude or disliking his character in general (see: the "Kageyama is abusive" discourse that somehow keeps popping up even now).

Chapter 387 takes place in 2018 and was published in 2020 so it takes him 6 years of in-universe time and 8 years of irl time to really open up.

And the catalyst for all of this is Hinata fulfilling his promise of beating him.

You see, another thing to note is that, whenever Hinata thinks of Kageyama, he's always looking at him from behind.

His internal image of him is someone who's always up ahead, someone he needs to catch up to, meaning Hinata can only see one side of him, he cannot see all of Kageyama until he catches up and passes him.

Which he finally does here.

In this shot Hinata is finally the one who's looking back at Kageyama. At this moment, Hinata (and by extension the audience) can see him for all he is, can see how he was just a lonely boy who's been waiting for someone to meet him where he is, to keep running alongside him and not quit the race.

Someone he doesn't have to go easy on. Someone who would actually tell him to hurry up instead of slow down for a change.

His someone better.
