We went on a field trip! We were at the @nortonsimon In Pasadena! As artists, we obviously love art. The Norton Simon is a great place to look at beautiful works, ancient, old or contemporary. It's a great museum, big enough to have a lot to see, small enough to see it in a day! Guido Reni Italian 1575-1642 “Saint Cecilia” 1606 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr Cecilia, the patron saint of musicians, was venerated for her chastity. According to legend, on the day of her forced marriage to a pagan, Cecilia used the cadence of wedding music to sing to God in her heart. Seventeenth-century representations often visualize this private melody by depicting Cecilia as a musician. In this painting by Guido Reni, she holds a violin in an unusual position--balanced on a table rather than cradled against her shoulder or chest--though the careful placement of her fingers suggests knowledge of the instrument. Cecilia's upturned eyes guide her music heavenward. In the saint's dedicated church in Rome, devotees used this painting for meditation, imagining Cecilia's devout song, perhaps mingled with audible music filling the church around them. Some little moments from my trip to LA and Pasadena last week. A huge thank you to @digitalbobert @jimdemonakos @kei_acedera for bringing us all together for this inspiring and amazing event that is @lightboxexpo This year was a bit challenging for me because one of my suitcases full of books missed the connection in London (I almost did too) and only arrived 4 days later... A bit of a nightmare at the time but it all turned out fine in the end. A huge thank you to all the kind souls who stopped by my table and took the time to chat, support my work or even bring me food or water (ladies, you know who you are, thank you again 💛)! Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun French 1755-1842 “Portrait of Theresa, Countess Kinsky” 1793 Oil on canvas Photo is taken by: @robertpuffjr A devoted monarchist and friend of Queen Marie-Antoinette, whose portrait she painted, Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun was forced to abandon her successful career in France after the Revolution. However, the noble families of Italy, Austria and Russia happily welcomed her as their portraitist. Vigée Le Brun produced this image of the lovely Thérèse, Countess Kinsky, in Vienna, in 1793. The unfortunate victim of an arranged marriage, the Countess's husband abandoned her after their wedding to return to his mistress. Vigée Le Brun's subjects were always fashionably dressed and she is known to have devised inventive costumes for them. (This writeup is taken from the description at the museum.)
