Pacific Northwestern Gothic
All the gift stores have mugs, fans, clothes, etc., with the infamous sasquatch printed on them. You've never seen him yourself, but you've heard from a friend of a friend...
The schools are filled with children, but oddly enough, never in your life have you seen a single child in the neighborhood.
There are beaches here. Big ones, too. But, they're not like the crowded touristy beaches of California and the like. No, there's a reason no one talks about these beaches. They're dark, windy, cold, and the water is vicious. You grew up on stories of people being dragged out into the waves and never seen again. These beaches are filled with dead birds buried in the sand. One time, you saw the bloody corpse of a baby seal, being torn apart by vultures. And everyone knows to run when you see the vultures.
Don't drive in the fog. You don't know what's in it, nor do you want to.
Every day at noon, they test the tsunami sirens. They're supposed to last only a few seconds, unless there really is a tsunami, in which case they will blare for at least two minutes. Nobody really bats an eye when they blare, it's practically a lunch bell to them. But still, every time, there are those few second where everyone goes silent, listening, counting the seconds the sirens go. And the panic that ensues within you when the siren goes on for just a little too long...
The mountains go on forever. Don't bother trying to reach the end of the trail. You won't.
At night, you can hear the coyotes calling. Best to keep your pets inside. Let them out when you hear the coyotes and you might not see them again.
Sometimes, you'll look out your window at night and there might be a deer right at your window. Ignore it, it just likes to watch you sleep. Do not provoke it. You don't know just what happens if you do, but you're father always told you...
Don't let your dog off leash if it barks while on a walk in the woods. It knows something you don't, but it doesn't know not to chase whatever it is.
There's a church at every corner. You're pretty sure there's never been a service at any of them.
Dear skulls. Dear skulls everywhere.

Rockford, Illinois (Part Two)
This is a northbound movement on the Milwaukee Road in Rockford, Illinois. We first see the train at Buckbee Street where it will soon cross the Illinois Central. That lead unit, 89C, was built for the Milwaukee in 1949.
The next two shots come from Cedar Street: the train has since crossed over the Rock River and is ducking under the Chicago & North Western, the bridge visible in the second shot. In the going away image, it is entering what was previously a small yard.
One might not think of northern Illinois as being part of the Rust Belt, but looking at a USGS map of this era, one sees just how busy this place must have been back in the day. In addition the roads mentioned above, the Chicago, Burlington & Quincy seems to have had a branch line here.
Three photographs by Richard Koenig; taken November 27th 1976.

It looks like a cross between Mudrunner and Gravity Falls and I'm delighted
If anyone picks this up, let me know how you like it?

So, English is my native language and I'm not fluent in any other language and all of my degrees are in English in some capacity. I'm fond of it, unsurprisingly; I actually think it's pretty and figuring out pronunciation is a fun puzzle for me much of the time.
There are other little puzzles kind of built into it that I do not like at all. But I do enjoy encountering unfamiliar words or names (in the sense that I haven't heard them before or don't remember hearing them, though I may know them very well in written form and have even heard them and forgotten the correct pronunciation). And it's fun to try and figure out which wildly inconsistent rule set should apply this time.
I especially enjoy this with words/names that were obviously derived from French at some point (extremely common in modern English, of course) and which might, as English words, be pronounced according to basic English norms, but also might not. Like, if a glaringly French-origin word ends with -et, should that English word rhyme with "let" or "day", two words that sound absolutely nothing alike? It's always an adventure to find out!
And by "find out" I mean "look it up multiple times" or "memorize every single exception you encounter, there will be many" or "I guess we're going with vibes."
I'm actually not at all a proponent of "English is THE WORST, it's PURE CHAOS!!!!" (this reads to me as "still the most special, but in an ironic way") in general. But it's at least fairer with pronunciation in terms of orthography, and I personally find it fun and interesting to trip into the pronunciation-of-my-own-native-language equivalent of throwing a dart at a board and seeing if today's vibes favor a silent T or whatever it is.

I’m embarrassed to admit it but I’ve been striking out so badly in dating when I’m back on the west coast (3 notable ghostings in the last 3 months) compared with ZERO such events when I was on the east coast, where everyone I’ve pursued with intention has wanted me back. What’s up with that?

another reason why i refuse to get personally involved in my local kink scene is because everyone ive met from this.. honestly really insular community (small college city moment) is so. competitive. im going to a kink show at a bar after hours and everyone ive mentioned it to Also goes to the biggest sex club which is the most famous one in the area. and their reaction is always like "oh.. ya its fun but its not much.. nothing like [x]" and its like ok well. im not ready to go to [x]. i don't want to go to a sex club in a huge barn that gets populated with hundreds of kinksters playing and fucking. i want to go to a show. but it gets brought up Every Single Time i mention this other, supposedly "tamer" event like its lesser cuz it isnt so big. just a really weird way to treat your community! and other independent venues!
