Exclusive forum at Niti Aayog for Development of the Northeast: Dr Jitendra Singh
The Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), MoS PMO, Personnel, Public Grievances, Pensions, Atomic Energy and Space, Dr Jitendra Singh today said that the government has created  an exclusive forum at the NITI  AAYOG to prepare plans for the development of the North East Region, which will be co-chaired by the Vice-Chairman of the Niti Aayog and Secretary of  DoNER. Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the Minister said that the forum will look at various proposals both at the central and the state levels and prepare plans for the speedy development of the North Eastern Region. Highlighting measures taken for the development of the North East Region during the last four years, Dr Jitendra Singh said the 90-year-old "Indian Forest Act of 1927", which was a legacy of the British Raj, was amended through a decision of the Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, as a result of which "Bamboo", which was defined as a "Tree" under the Indian Forest Act of 1927, was changed, thereby doing away with the requirement of obtaining a permit for cutting of bamboo on non-forest land for economic use. This, he said, is going to be a game-changer for generations to come, by opening new avenues of job generation and entrepreneurship by allowing bamboo cultivation and bamboo use by non-farmers on non-forest land. Another historic decision relates to 100% funding by Central Government for projects in the NER, which were earlier being undertaken on the basis of Centre-State sharing in the ratio of 90:10, he added. The minister said that over the last four years, the Northeast region has been given the utmost attention which it deserved and was showed not only physical but also psychological outreach by the central government to the people of the region. He said the government Act East policy has enhanced the importance of the region in engaging with South East Asian neighbours. The central government has taken major initiatives for development of NE region over the last four years. Under Bharatmala Pariyojna, 5301 kilometres in NER have been approved for improvement. Out of this, 3246-kilometre road marked for development of Economic Corridor in North East.  Also, the bidding process for the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway has begun, he added. In Railways, Gauge Conversion has been completed, thereby all operational Medium Gauge sections have been converted to Broad Gauge. Agartala-Akhaura (Bangladesh) rail link supported by Ministry of DoNER is at tendering stage. In Civil Aviation, construction of the New Greenfield Airport at Pakyog (Gangtok, Sikkim) is complete and the License from DGCA is awaited. In shipping, development of Barak river is taken up in two phases for shipping and navigation purposes. Secretary, DoNER, Shri Naveen Verma,  Secretary, North Eastern Council (NEC) Shri Ram Muviah and senior officers of DoNER were also present. Read the full article

Congrats to BKE CrossFit athlete @nicole_ninomiya ! #Repost @nicole_ninomiya with @get_repost ・・・ And just like that, a years work put into these 5 weeks is over. This was probably the most stressful open I’ve experienced yet since Crossfit changed regional teams from 6 people down to 4 people. We still had 6 people wanting to go to regionals so we had to fight for a spot every single week, which led to me redoing workouts many more times than I’d ever want too 🤦🏼‍♀️ through these 5 weeks even though we all were competing against each other, the team chemistry every day we walked into the gym was amazing and the vibes between us all were never broken. I don’t think there is any team out there that has as much fun as we do every single time we’re together. These people are some of my best friends and I wouldn’t wanna suffer through training/the open with any other teammates. I have to say a HUGE thank you to @biokineticathlete ... since last year’s open ended I was dealing with extreme dizziness and swelling of my quads when I worked out, Dave got me through regionals but this problem would not go away. Between September- December I was probably training at 30% trying to figure out what was wrong with me, and at this point, I told Dave my chances of making it on the team are basically out of reach the way I was feeling/training. We tweaked some things, started taking my greens 🤪 , and had more appointments each week to get me ready and I can 100% say I would never have been able to finish 32nd in the North East region, out of 15,000 women, if it weren’t for Dave. THANK YOU!!!! 🙌🏼. Thank you to @fuel4lifemeals for keeping us fueled and making not only delicious but also healthy meals so it’s one less thing I have to think about between work, training, and trying to get my macros in..thank you for being in our corner!! 🙏🏼 Big things coming from this team, all of us, and I can’t wait to see where we go together 💪🏼✊🏼 #crossfit #crossfitgames #intheopen2018 #teamcoliseumstrength2018 #regionalsbound #northeastregionals #progenex #nutrabio #xendurance

Hudson Valley Students Win Awards in the “Writing about Place” Contest
Hyde Park, NY (April 12) –
“Writing about Place” is an annual place-based writing contest that is open to public, private, and home-schooled students (grades K-12) throughout the 11-county Hudson River Valley National Heritage Area. The contest is organized by Teaching the Hudson Valley (THV), an organization that works to help educators discover, appreciate, and share the region’s natural, historic, and cultural treasures with children and youth. Student’s poems and essays can be found on the THV blog.
The following are the top-scoring students and their work:
Second graders eager to visit the zoo at Bear Mountain State Park won the elementary school trip with drawings and research on animals they expect to encounter there. Yessenia, for example, described a bald eagle’s “pointy yellow beak,” while Zitlaly speculated on how porcupines use their “sharp claws.” Sucheta Baichwal and Lily Cheung teach English as a New Language (ENL) class at Overlook Primary School (Arlington Central Schools).
Redwan Arosh, a freshman at Newburgh Free Academy, conjured the life of a tree in an essay titled “The Beauty of Bear Mountain.” Mr. Arosh explores how a tree might look and feel in each season, describes the ebb and flow of visitors, and contemplates a tree’s role as “a home for birds and squirrels” and a source of oxygen for humans. English teacher Virginia McCurdy submitted Mr. Arosh’s work as well as essays by other students in the Newburgh Enlarged City Schools.
In “Stone Faced,” Alice Rosi-Marshall imagines herself as a statue in the gardens at Vanderbilt Mansion National Historic Site. “Since I was eight years old, I have found refuge in the Vanderbilt Gardens,” she wrote. “…. [what] fascinated me most…was the statue of the woman forever dancing underneath her brick archway.” Ms. Rosi-Marshall is in grade 10 at Millbrook High School. English teacher Maureen Ackerman submitted the poem along with work by other students.
