Water World - November 18th, 1995.
"Water (Dihydrogen Oxide, H2O) is a truly remarkable chemical compound and is fundamental to life on Earth. Earth is the only planet in the Solar System where the surface temperature and pressure allow the three forms of water, solid (ice), liquid (ocean), and gas (water vapor condensing in clouds), to exist simultaneously on its surface. Water in one of these forms accounts for everything visible in this view of Earth from space, looking north at the Bering Sea and the coast of Alaska, USA, around Bristol Bay."

House Environment Headcanons
Since we all know that the Nine Houses system is our solar system, here's how I think the planets have been made suitable for human habitation. Take these with a grain of salt!
The First House: Earth with no ice caps. Contrary to popular belief this wouldn't cover all land, but it would significantly shrink it. I assume that Canaan is located in the sparse remains of New Zealand, probably the north island since thats the part where NZ is most broken up! I remember in GTN, Gideon describes the First as being smeared with grey and green in certain places.
The Second House: Terraformed Mars, pretty much. The iron rich soil would definitely make the landscape ruddy. This map from reddit is sort of what I imagine, but the deserts are much more red! Reactivating the volcanoes on Mars would help with the atmosphere.
The Third House: I'm sure they get a fuck ton of resources from all of Jupiters moons, but the bulk of the population probably lives on terraformed Ganymede. There's likely no land, but hey Io is a hell scape with a fuck ton of dirt! Also in NTN jod reveals he has land-raising abilities. I wouldn't be surprised if he could just create a large island for the Third. I imagine the Third House is one large metropolis located on a mountainous island, high enough from sea level to prevent tsumanis, hurriances, etc.
The Fourth House: Most likely the fourth house was founded on Titan, the largest moon of Saturn. I imagine the atmosphere is pumped with greenhouse gases to keep the air warm. I always saw the Fourth as a global boreal forest with snow most of the year.
The Fifth House: Titania was most likely the moon that was terraformed. Contrary to what the temperatures should be, I think the Fifth is quite warm, think American Midwest. I think some combination of hyper-futuristic technology allows for sunlight to be absorbed and disbursed throughout the planet. I love to think of the Fifth as filled with farms with some small cities scattered about!
The Sixth House: Miniature Arrakis with days so hot that the scholars all live underground with blacked out windows. If your familiar with The Last Airbender, I see the Sixth being a sprawled out version of Wan Shi Tong's library with platforms that shuttles land on before descending beneath the surface. Like the fremen in Dune, I think the people of the Sixth would obsessively collect water and store it in underground pools. Maybe cavaliers have their own form of still-suits on the occasion they need to leave the safety of the libraries.
The Seventh House: Venus....fucking Venus. Hell world. Hell hole. A terraformed Venus would probably be entirely tropical and warm-temperate at the poles. I'm sure that after 10,000 years the entire planet is habitable but in the beginning (around Cytherea's time) I think the house made do with floating cities in the upper atmosphere. When the surface was deemed safe the cities could slowly descend and settle around the growing flora. Either way, the atmosphere of Venus is VERY dense and I think it would be covered 90% in clouds. Assuming they have insane amount of rainfall they could trade water with the Sixth or other parched planets.
The Eighth House: Most likely founded on Triton, which is Neptune's largest moon. I don't think the Eighth has the luxury of a livable atmosphere and lives in sealed buildings built partly into the ground. Shuttles are taken into specific decompression bays to adjust to the artificial gravity and oxygen. This environment also explains why the people of the Eighth are so clinical and obsessed with cleanliness/order. If one thing goes wrong then SHAZAM! entire House destroyed. That doesn't mean there isn't beauty in the Eighth, I think that there's dozens of greenhouses of both the recreational and functional variety. They're likely the house that has the most womb-vats and other biological equipment, perhaps thats how they make most of their money?
The Ninth House: We get the most information about the Ninth in GTN, and we can understand that its cold as balls. To me this is giving Siberian wasteland without snow. There's patches of grubby plants here and there, and obviously Drearburh, but its main temperatures are just cold and colder. I see the "soupy white" atmosphere is located close to the ground and it slowly turns navy as it goes higher. Imagine a cloud covered night except the center of the clouds shows the stars. Did I mention the Ninth is cold as balls?
#anyway. I would probably want to live on the second. by FAR#thats the climate that imo is the most agreeable#the locked tomb#gideon the ninth#tlt

The Great Barrier Reef (Week 5)
After a very memorable trip to Singapore and Bali, it was time to visit the Great Barrier Reef with my summer class. But first, Lauren and I had to take a train from Brisbane to Hervey Bay where we would meet up with our class and fly out to Lady Elliot Island (LEI). The day we had in the 3rd largest Australian city consisted of a lot of walking through the city streets, spotting spiders in the Botanical Garden, and philosophizing about human nature as usual.
We were eager to get on our first Australian train that would take us to Hervey Bay, but after reaching the first stop and halting for the next 3 hours, we had started to lose hope. Apparently a tree had fallen down onto power lines which fell onto the tracks up north, preventing our train from moving forward. Southeast Queensland is notorious for having bad thunderstorms and flooding. With the canceled train and nowhere to stay, all we could do was wait patiently and hope that the train company would coordinate accommodation for us and secure us a train ride for the following day. Luckily, the train company followed through and we got to spend an extra day in Brisbane which we used to walk around some more and then watch Mean Girls in theater (I highly recommend giving it a watch). Seeing how patient and cooperative all the Australians were during all the train chaos was very inspiring and a testament to the lax culture Aussies embrace. Isolated from the rest of the world, people here seem to prioritize self-care and community instead of work and politics. When the weather is this nice all the time, I sure can’t blame them. Soon enough, we found ourselves in Hervey Bay, and then on one of the smallest planes I have ever laid my eyes on for just 12 passengers to get to LEI.
Just like that, I found myself standing on a tiny island that would take only 45 minutes to walk around.
A picture of LEI from the plane.
LEI is the southernmost point of the Great Barrier Reef and it’s known to be a breeding ground for almost 100 different species of birds, 3 species of turtle, as well as countless fish, rays, sharks, and so much more. It’s also home to an eco-resort dedicated to educating visitors about the surrounding coral reefs and wildlife while being fully self-sustainable. Through my class, we got behind-the-scenes tours from staff to learn about the sustainable practices used on the island including solar panels for energy, a water desalination and filtration system, and even a composting machine that could take any thrown out food from the buffet and turn it into fertilizer. In our spare time, students were free to snorkel, scuba dive, and explore as much as we wanted. Within the first 2 minutes of my first snorkeling adventure, I watched a small shark swim right below me, saw countless fish, and witnessed the beauty of an underwater world I never could have imagined. I had no idea that coral reefs came in every color from yellow to green to purple and that sea turtles use their flippers to itch their faces just like my dog, Roni, uses his paw when he has something in his eye. I watched a line of baby squid float side-by-side without a care in the world and a baby turtle poop as if performing for us eager snorkelers. I was introduced to over a dozen different turtles over the days and learned that my favorite part about turtle-watching was seeing them come up for air and poke their little heads up out of the water while they’re massive shells floated at the surface. Each shark I saw (all about the size of a dolphin or smaller) reminded me of their beauty and surprisingly calm nature, but impressive speed and agility. I also laid eyes on barracuda as well as a stingray in their natural habitat and I overcame my fear of scuba diving as I made my first dive down 12 meters! The experience was thrilling, but showed me that I could see the same beauty while floating at the water’s surface – a more comfortable location for a mild claustrophobe.
A screenshot from a video where a shark swims under a turtle we were watching!
All in all, the quick 5-day trip was one I will never forget and one that I will never fail to recommend to any future Australia-travelers (just don't forget to bring a hat to protect you from the bird poop!).
Cheers!

The Messenger, Eclipse
(~1.9K Words) Part 1, Chapter 1 - Wendy Wendel
0002023 A.D. - Earth (Solar System, Milky Way Galaxy) North America - Tampa Bay, FL, U.S.A. May 25th - 7:50 AM
It all started with that parking spot - that stupid parking spot. It was simple. It was all I asked for. I never asked for any space carjacking, I never asked for any blistering red face-goop, I never asked for any evil taxi cabs, and I most certainly never asked for any near-death experiences, let alone seven. All I wanted was to park in my spot, and get to class. My name is Wendy. To my knowledge, I'm currently 23 years old, give or take a few months, but that can be surprisingly hard to pin down aboard this... thing. This was maybe around six, maybe seven months ago, a few days after I turned 23. Since that day, I haven't had a week's worth of rest at home. It was the day I met Eclipse - don't get me wrong, he's a wonderful person - but he's more than a handful, especially when we're off Earth. He's the reason I'm writing this right now, looking at all the postage and recording logs. Fortunately for all of us, this all took place on solid ground. God knows I'd be livid if I had an extra-planetary experience on my first day. But anyway - the parking spot, yeah? At the school, we're supposed to have assigned parking. My spot for the AM class is in the second row off Building C, six spots down from the far right side when you're coming in. It's a little far from the building, sure, but it's not like I'd take one in the third row, out of the shade. My car's a little blue type - two doors, two seats, just enough space for me and my textbooks to fit under the trees between the first and second row of student parking. My car should have been the only car allowed in the spot, but as I pulled into the lot, I couldn't find the empty square. At first, I thought it was just a simple mistake - there are plenty of turns into different lots, but this was certainly the Building C parking lot. Thankfully, I was about ten minutes early to the lecture and lab as I looked around for my sign - I knew for a fact that I'd be cutting it close once I saw the scrap heap in my square. I manually counted off the spaces, pointing to each one to make sure there was no mistake before I pulled in directly behind the van in my spot. It was sleek and white - a clean vehicle, but old, and slightly splotchy with its paint. At earliest, it must have been an 80s model, with some notable surface touch-ups here and there. It was well over seven feet tall, likely a cargo van or a camper. In any case, it was in my spot, and after that long of a drive, I wasn't having that. I parked my car immediately behind it to trap it in. There wouldn't be another car around for another three hours or so - the labs would always last three hours or longer, and the only breaks would be twenty minutes long, hardly enough time for anyone to leave the campus or try to pop in for a surprise visit. I stepped out of my car and took careful steps up beside the window, peeking in through the perforated windows to try and guess whether or not someone was inside. Well, come on - what would you do if someone took your parking spot at such a crucial time? I approached the driver's door and started to tap on the glass erratically, cupping my hand against the driver's side window to shield my eyes from the glare. "Open up in there!" I shouted. "This isn't yours to take!"
I heard a loud, heavy thud against my car's hood, and I held my breath. After a moment had passed, I heard groaning from the other side of the van, and out stepped a fairly tall, skinny guy wearing a bright green jacket and black slacks. He had wispy, black hair that fell over his face, but the rest was brushed semi-neatly to either side, falling roughly around his shoulders. "What'cha have to go and park there for?" he asked, hastily shoving the stray lock of hair behind his ear and smoothing out the rest of the messy, wavy mop on his head. "Made me bang my head against the door."
"Sorry, sir, campus police. I'm doing a patrol sweep of the C parking lot, and you don't seem to have the right sticker on your windshield," I answered back, putting on my best customer-service smile.
"Campus..?" he asked, before turning his head to look towards the main building. His hand connected with his forehead with a loud smack, and he took in a sharp breath. His lips were moving, but he wasn't speaking - for a moment, I thought he had broken down, but then he started speaking again. "Oh, sorry. Right, no, right - this is my parking space," he lied. He lied surprisingly well - no failing or faltering to his voice, and just the right amount of confidence to his tone that might have sold me if I didn't already know it was false. His eyes connected with the sign across from the hood of his van, and as he crossed over the bumper to meet me, he patted the front of the sign. "Mister Whendle," he explained. He held up a plastic ID card. Despite being closed off in his hand, it reflected light, and I couldn't get a good look at its surface without blinding myself. Beneath the glare, though, I could tell something was wrong. The letters shifted back and forth, dissolving into one another in a soupy mess before disappearing under the glare. His face matched, and things were laid out like a regular ID, but something untraceable was wrong about it. "Should be attending the next-" he paused, taking a little too long to check the text on the 'reserved' sign. "-Chemistry class. Say I swing by the office and get the window sticker, and you trot off to go get a warning slip, sound fair?"
"Vhendel," I corrected.
"Right - no, sorry?"
"Vhendel. It's pronounced Vhendel. It's a Germanic name, probably Swedish or Dutch. The W is pronounced like a Vuh, yeah?"
"Yeah..." he answered. His hair fell over his face once again, and his eyebrows raised. I could practically see the awkward regret fill his soul, but he at least had the courage not to take his eyes off of me. He tucked his ID into his jacket's pocket. "And your name would be..?"
"Wendy. Wendy Wendel. I'm the chemistry student you're currently bothering, if you haven't noticed."
"Which means you're not campus police?" he asked. "So what are you doing blocking me in here?"
"What are you doing, full stop?" I shot back.
He clicked his tongue and paused for a while. A muffled, buzzing sound interrupted him. He checked his watch - I couldn't make out what it read, despite my best efforts. "Little complicated. Professional business. You'll get your parking space back, you have my word, Vendy," he stated, putting a hand out to stall my speaking. "Just cut me a break just this once? Time - sort of an 'of the essence' thing-type-deal, and it's been a long time since I've had any surplus of it," he pleaded.
"Wendy. It's an English name. You pronounce the W as a Wuh. Get that right and I might not report your silly little van to the campus police after you shove it - now shove it."
"Ach, no," he replied. "This isn't an 'I wanna go but can't,' this is an 'I shouldn't even be having this conversation,' sort of-" He scoffed, cutting himself off. "You'll just figure it out." He took two hurried steps towards the crosswalk, and then turned back around to face me. He looked worried - probably since I was about to call the campus police - but took a breath and fit a black glove to his hand. "Right, no, sorry, lack of parking spaces..."
He stuck out his newly-gloved hand and clicked his fingers. In his hands sat a thick, brown envelope, one he quickly stuffed into his jacket along with the glove. He smiled as he looked my way, trotting back over to the side door of the van and opening it. A plain white saddle-bag was slung over his shoulder, one which he was quick to open. I couldn't peek inside, but from what I saw at the sides, it appeared to be flooded with letters and packages - thick, bursting at the seams but clinging to its last threads for dear life. He started to shove the envelope into the bag. "Now Ms. Wendel, how much time did you say your class was?" he asked, holding up his watch and twisting the outer rim as if to set an alarm.
"I didn't say, but it's three hours, thanks. Are you gonna move your van? It starts in six minutes now." I turned around, reaching into my laptop case to make sure I had everything. "You're just lucky I-"
My heart stopped, and my voice died. My car was gone. One second, it had been parked there, the next, it had vanished. I turned to face him, just in time for him to seal his bag.
"My..!" I shook my head, jaw hanging open as I dropped my hands to my sides. "Where did it go? Give it back!"
"Timed compression package," he explained. He held up the saddle-bag he wore, patting the front flap. "You said three hours, so you're gonna wait three hours." He held up his keys and locked his van, and once he was sure he had everything settled, he started to dart off towards the school. "You'll have it back by the end of class!" he called. "I never miss a delivery schedule," he added. Somehow, that didn't comfort me.
"I don't care if you don't miss a stupid delivery, all my books are in there!" I answered, dashing past the cars on either side of me to catch up to him. Once I had gotten into lock-step with his pace and was a couple feet behind him, I grabbed his shoulder. "And you didn't even tell me your name!"
He stopped, putting a hand over my other shoulder so I wouldn't trip. "Call me Eclipse. I'm something of a delivery-man, from-" His eyes dodged to the left. "-Out of town," he finished. With a little pat to my shoulder, he started running again, seemingly content to speak while spending his breath. "Where?" I asked. Eclipse stopped, turning around. "Let's say Montana. That's a good state, right? I've never been there on the job. Nobody wants packages in Montana. I should go there sometime!" Once he was done speaking, he started running again. "Wait, but- hold on, mail boy, what's with the..?!" He stopped yet again, turning around with an impatient look on his face. "What's with the what? The car? I'll explain later, alright? Just lifting it for a minute - but right now, mail boy's got places to be, so you're either in or you're out," he stated. He turned back around again and started running, far off-course from where I was headed. I turned my head towards the main entrance to the C building, with three minutes until class started. There wasn't a lot I could do - those books were important, and to be honest, it wasn't my favorite class. At the time, I could only hope the professor could excuse the absence. I couldn't have predicted just how long I would wind up being gone for.

Tidal Power Market: Floating Tidal Power Platforms to Reign Supreme
Low Environmental Impact and Government Support and Incentives are major factor attributable to the growth of the market.
According to TechSci Research report, “Global Tidal Power Market - Industry Size, Share, Trends, Competition Forecast & Opportunities, 2028”. The Global Tidal Power is anticipated to project robust growth in the forecast period with a CAGR of 9.02% through 2028, The market is likely to grow in the future due to the global energy transition toward renewables and the rollout of new technologies in many developed countries.
Based on Power Generation Method, Floating Tidal Power Platform segment is expected to dominate the market during the forecast period. Tidal energy uses tidal currents consistent in volume and direction throughout the year, making it an incredibly efficient renewable energy source with a high power output. The tidal power market recently witnessed increased floating power production system deployments. In the system, the turbines are aligned in a particular way and attached to a standard moving beam. They produce more energy as compared to fixed structures.
According to the International Renewable Energy Agency, the estimated global marine energy capacity accounted for 524 MW in 2022, which includes the ocean energy derived from the kinetic energy of ocean waves, tides, salinity, and differences in ocean temperatures. Most of this was due to the added capacity from floating tidal power stations and wave energy. The industry is expected to grow even more in the coming years, parallel with the net-zero emission goals in many countries.
Thus, several upcoming projects are lined up to harness the technology for power production. The US Department of Energy has a Water Power Program to develop marine energy and technologies. In October 2022, the US Department of Energy agreed to fund USD 35 million to advance tidal and river current energy systems as part of measures to boost a sector whose current impact is negligible. Such developments will likely significantly boost the market due to the expansion of floating/instream tidal energy platform installations.

Based on Region, Europe plays a significant role in the global Tidal Power market, Europe planned a series of tidal power plants coming into operation or getting grid-connected recently. Countries like the United Kingdom and Denmark are the most highlighted parts of the region. According to a 2021 study conducted by experts at Edinburgh University, tidal stream alone has the potential to produce 11% of the United Kingdom's current annual electricity demand, which is the same as the combined contribution of solar and biomass over the previous year.
The British Hydropower Association adds that tidal range projects under development, which are now delayed, would provide 10 GW of extra capacity by 2030 if permission and enough funding were granted. These projects throughout the United Kingdom include Swansea Bay, Merseyside, the North Somerset Coast, and the North Wales Coast.
In March 2023, authorities in Liverpool wanted the River Mersey to be the site of a massive tidal power plant that could power up to 1 million homes while creating thousands of employment in the region. If constructed, the plant would have a capacity of at least one gigatonne and use Mersey's tidal range. Moreover, in May 2022, Minesto completed the first week of commissioning the Dragon 4 tidal power plant in Vestmanna, Faroe Islands, Denmark, including energy production and verification of all critical operations. Minesto's Deep Green Kite technology is cost-effective in places with low-flow tidal streams and ocean currents. Such developments will likely boost the region's position in the tidal power market’s Growth.

Holiday Mini-Campaign Retrospective
My group had a lot of people who wouldn't be able to make it to game from Thanksgiving to Xmas due to various job commitments, including our usual DM, so I offered to GM a "holiday mini campaign" for whoever was left. We used SCRE (Sour's Custom Roleplaying Environment) for the game and I wrote a simple plot of a small spaceship crew getting stranded at an abandoned space station and needing to salvage enough fuel to get home.
I wanted to make it more holiday though, so who abandoned the station? Why, Santa Claus! As humans and later sapient society as a whole pushed their ability to travel to previously unreachable places Santa had to abandon his original North Pole workshop, then the one on the moon, then a whole series of workshops in our solar system until eventually he had to abandon NP-7 as the barest edges of sentient space brushed up against it. Where is NP-8? I won't tell. Where are our PCs? NP-7.
Now, I called NP-7 abandoned earlier and that is sort of true, but part of the manufacturing equipment left behind were the extra elves that wouldn't fit on Rud-7 (Santa's interstellar vessel.) The elves had been surviving by eating the last of the supplies and then each other, raiding the kitchens and the med-bay for any edge over their competition. By the time my PCs arrived, the idea of eating something different for a change was enough to drive them into a frenzy.
And so my players docked their ship and ventured forth into the station. They explored and found remnants of knock-off consumer electronics manufacturing. They found small hominids with tattered green rags still clinging to their bodies. They eventually found their way, exhausted and injured, to a shuttle bay with 8 shuttles and the equipment necessary to refuel their ship. The end.
Except they also did blow up the station on their way out just for fun.

The Direction of the Light Dictates the Style of Window Treatments for Kitchens
The orientation of a house's windows, whether by choice or circumstance, can significantly influence the direction of natural light that enters the kitchen. While existing windows may be out of the homeowner's control when purchasing a home, those constructing their dwellings have some say. Often, local regulations dictate the home's alignment, generally facing the front or road. Consequently, kitchens may have windows facing various directions, making it essential to understand the light's path. Harnessing the benefits of light while mitigating its adverse effects can be achieved through thoughtfully designed window treatments, blending style and function seamlessly.
Understanding the Path of Light
The Florida Solar Energy Center highlights the angles at which sunlight interacts with a house. During different seasons, the sun's rising position changes. In summer, it rises north of due east, while in winter, it's south of due east. The sun's angle is more acute in northern latitudes, like Missouri, impacting east and west-facing windows the most. East-facing kitchens, for instance, may receive sunlight for around five hours, causing potential overheating. This underscores the importance of window treatments to counteract the sun's detrimental aspects.
Adapting to Window Styles
Window styles significantly affect how heat interacts with the kitchen space. For instance, bow or bay windows supply ample natural light and space for activities but also invite excessive heat, straining HVAC systems. Older kitchens with double-hung windows experience minimal light yet heightened heat. This disparity necessitates window treatments that balance light access with heat prevention.
Overcoming the Image of Traditional Blinds
Traditional blinds, often associated with low-quality aluminum versions, have evolved to incorporate energy efficiency. East-facing kitchens can benefit from wood or faux wood mini-blinds, allowing light while reducing sun-related issues. These blinds can be adjusted to block the most intense morning sun while optimizing light for cooking. Hunter Douglas' Woodmates Affordable Faux and Norman's faux wood blinds offer cost-effective options for bay, bow, or double-hung windows.
Harmonizing with Room Style
Matching window treatments to the kitchen's style is essential. For instance, wood blinds create an impressive statement in a country kitchen, while a modern kitchen may demand more contemporary treatments. Reflective-backed window treatments, ideal for east-facing kitchens, repel excess heat and light. Plantation shutters serve as a versatile choice, suitable for country, modern, or traditional kitchens.
Tailoring to Unique Windows
Kitchens with narrower windows, arch accents, or double-hung windows can benefit from plantation shutters. These shutters come in various sizes, with the option for vanes to suit the desired amount of light. Unlike other options, they resist warping, effectively reflecting excess heat and light.
