Not an Island: some of the ways the library partners with academic departments

This week we are partnering with the German department in celebrating 50 years of Max Kade German Writer in Residence Program.  This program has brought many distinguished German, Austrian, or Swiss authors to campus for a 10-week residency.   It provides an exciting a unique opportunity for students to learn more about German literature.  Don’t miss the display in the Terrell Main library featuring a selection of these many authors’ works or the talk by this year’s writer in residence, Nora Gomringer (Thurs., Nov.7).

Next week we are partnering again with the English department to bring you 5th Early Modern Recipe Transcribathon (Tues. Nov. 5).  You can be a part of a worldwide event and contribute to feminist scholarship by being a transcribers of Seventeenth-century recipes.  No experience necessary.  You learn how to read 17thc manuscripts, uncover interesting stories, recipes and health care tips from another era and create searchable test for scholars and students to use.

For many years the library has promoted the right to read with a banned books display, but this year we partnered with the English department which enabled us to add a Read-aloud event.  This event was attended by students, faculty and staff passionate about the right to read any book.  In addition Special Collections brought books from their collection where you could see how they had be physically altered so certain words and/or ideas could not be read or shared.  

Thank you partners for helping us bring these opportunities to students and the Oberlin Community.

A journey through circa 500 years of fashion history as reflected in art: How have artists reacted to extreme phenomena such as slashed clothing, codpieces, the crinoline, or the dinner jacket? Fashion is an economic factor as well as a seismograph of social sensitivities, an expression of longing, and an instrument for mechanisms of inclusion and exclusion. In the modern age of global homogenization through “fast fashion,” this exhibition aims to provide a critical and at the same time sensory overview of clothing in art and the problematic and subversive moments in the history of fashion through the techniques of painting, drawing, sculpture, installation, photography, and film.

Various Artists - Poetry Slam/Once Again LP ---- Records arriving in the post is nice but receiving a numbered one in a hundred copy to your doorstep all the way from Germany is pretty special. Not many thongs can make that kind of delivery more special. Maybe if it were a gift or perhaps a surprise out of the blue would do the trick. This German LP was special to me as it contains on it a recording of Tony Ingram performing 'Unsolicited Advice (After Jeanann Verlee)'. Slam poetry is important to me as I spent a very formative period in my late teens working with the fantastic Martin Daws as part of the musical backing to his poetry. I learnt an enormous amount during that period even though I admittedly didn’t ‘get’ a great deal of what I was retrospectively blessed to have been introduced to.  ‘Got it’ or not, slam poetry seeped into the back of my mind and on the night I was told that my Dad had died just over two years ago my instant reaction was (amongst other things) to revisit some of the angrier performances I had earmarked online. While Tonya Ingram’s poem ‘Unsolicited Advice’ was not one of those poems I used to understand my mourning of my father it has by now become the soundtrack to my rediscovering a confidence and unapologetic boldness that I fell out of touch with a long time ago. I never fail to cry while listening to it and while I could keep drawing strength from indefinitely watching the YouTube footage of her performances it is an added comfort to have a physical artefact enforce everything I take from her writing. The other artists featured on this release are previously unknown to me but I’m already enjoying spending to get to know them. They are:  Sabrina Benaim Nora Gomringer Xóchil A. Literatur-Performerin Nora Gomringer, ebenfalls neu, wusste eher mit Sprüchen auf wechselnden T-Shirts zu überzeugen, allerdings gaben ihre authentisch wirkenden Interpretationsverweigerungen der angestrengten Diskussion eine angenehme Erdung.
