De Nesserdijk is een deel van Schielands Hoge Zeedijk nabij de polder Kralingen, gelegen tussen de dijkbocht en het Toepad. De algemene betekenis van nes is schor of aangeslibd land. Wanneer deze aanslibbing heeft plaats gehad, is niet met zekerheid te zeggen. Op oude kaarten treft men de naam gewoonlijk aan als 'de Esch', waarschijnlijk ontstaan uit 'den Esch' voor 'den' of 'de Nes'.

Op 2 januari 1872 richtte Pieter Smit (1848-1913) een scheepswerf en machinefabriek op in Slikkerveer. In 1890 werd het bedrijf omgezet in een vennootschap, de NV Scheepsbouw en Machinefabriek De Industrie. In 1893 werd het bedrijf overgeplaatst naar Rotterdam. Op 4 april 1906 werd het bedrijf ondergebracht in een nieuw opgerichte vennootschap: de NV Machinefabriek en Scheepswerf van P. Smit Jr.

In 1912 verkocht Pieter Smit zijn aandelen in de vennootschap aan de Rotterdamse zakenman D.G. van Beuningen. Deze verkocht ze in 1938 weer aan de Rotterdamse Droogdok Maatschappij (RDM) en de NV Dok en Werf Maatschappij Wilton-Fijenoord. In beide gevallen bleef P. Smit Jr. gewoon onder eigen naam voortbestaan.

In 1937 en 1938 kon het bedrijf het werfterrein aanzienlijk uitbreiden met de aankoop van het aangrenzende terrein van Burgerhout's Machinefabriek en Scheepswerf NV, die hier in 1910 was gevestigd, maar sinds 1932 vanwege de recessie was gesloten en later liquideerde.

Pieter Smit was een van de eerste scheepsbouwers in Nederland die zich specialiseerde in de bouw van ijzeren sleepboten met compound stoommachine. In 1873 begon hij met de bouw van ijzeren loodsschoeners, in 1881 met de bouw van ijzeren zeegaande stoomschepen. Na de verplaatsing naar Rotterdam bouwde men sleep-, passagiers- en vrachtschepen en het eerste schip voor buitenlandse rekening. Tijdens de recessie in de jaren dertig wist men met de bouw en reparatie schepen voor de binnenvaart te overleven.

Tot de bekendste schepen die P. Smit Jr. heeft gebouwd behoren de ijsbreker Jääkarhu (1926) en de passagiersschepen Colombia (1930), Noordam (1938), Klipfontein en Oranjefontein (1939-1940), Prins der Nederlanden (1957) en Cunard Ambassador (1972).

International cruise ships dock in Halong with 4700 passengers

Halong Bay Cruise - On November 12, at Ha Long International Passenger Port, two international super ships docked, bringing more than 4,700 tourists to Ha Long City.

At 8:00, the Noordam ship (Dutch nationality) traveled from Hong Kong (China) to Singapore, bringing nearly 1,900 passengers to Ha Long. Then, at 10:00 on the same day, the cruise ship Celebrity Solstice (Malta nationality) docked with 2,806 passengers.

Most tourists come from Europe and America, and this is also the main group of tourists visiting Ha Long during the annual cruise season.

Immediately after arriving at the port, tourists divided into many groups to visit and explore the beauty of Ha Long Bay and other famous scenic spots in Ha Long City such as Long Tien Pagoda and Quang Ninh Museum. Others chose to travel to Yen Tu National Special Relic Site (Uong Bi City) and Yen Duc Village (Dong Trieu City).

Two super cruise ships took these tourists away from Ha Long the next day (November 13). According to the plan, the Celebrity Solstice will return to Ha Long 4 more times in 2024, expected to bring tens of thousands more tourists to Quang Ninh province.

It is expected that from now until the end of 2024, Ha Long International Passenger Port will welcome about 10 large cruise ships from world-famous corporations and brands such as: Mein Schiff 6, Celebrity Solstice, … bringing tens of thousands of international tourists to Quang Ninh.

Quang Ninh province is considered by international cruise lines to be a destination with great competitive advantages in the cruise tourism market share in Vietnam and Southeast Asia, thanks to its World Heritage - Natural Wonder of the World Halong Bay, unique experiences of culture and local cuisine.

In particular, Quang Ninh is currently the first and only locality in Vietnam with a specialized passenger port for tourism, capable of receiving many large-scale international ships at the same time.

Fosses and Fjordurs

Saturday 15th June 2024 – Isafjordur, Iceland.

Last night, I was so shattered after such a long, not to say slightly disappointing day yesterday, in spite of the gorgeous weather. There was a barbecue poolside in the evening that the others wanted to go to but there was no lobster and the music was such a racket to my ears that I took my leave to watch Mozart’s ‘Magic Flute’ in the Theatre instead, presented on DVD by the Metropolitan Opera.

I’ve not been to a Mozart opera before and it was a bit ‘weird’, I must say. Let’s just say I’m glad I went but I’m just as glad it was ‘free’! I was so dog-tired by this time that my head barely hit the pillow and was asleep. I may not have written-up my Blog but at least I got 7 hours sleep for the first time!

Today we arrived in our last Icelandic port of call on this cruise, Isafjordur, capital of the Western Fjords, with a population of around 2,500. It was founded in the 9th century on the northern trading routes but today, fishing and tourism are its main income. It’s also just a hundred miles from the Arctic Circle with a sub-arctic climate and the mist had rolled-in from the North! Thankfully, it cleared somewhat during the day and it wasn’t that cold really.

We were followed (yet again) by Costa Favolosa but also today by Holland America’s Zuiderdam (2002: 81,769 tons and 2,272 passengers) which anchored and began tendering.

Sister ship to Westerdam and Noordam we were on last year, she’s similar in size and build origin to Costa Favolosa but a bit nicer looking, in my opinion.

While Angie went off to climb up Gongumannafoss Waterfall (that’s the sort of thing she does), Andrew, Sally & I took the less demanding local highlights tour, calling at Bolungarvik a few miles away in an adjacent fjord.

Here we were entertained with some Icelandic songs by a rather nice looking local called Petur.

Beside the fjord on an ancient fishing boat beaching site is the Osvor Maritime Museum, a collection of wooden turf-roofed fishermen’s huts.

The huts are 20th century reproductions and it’s less of a ‘maritime museum’ than it is about dried fish – and the local ‘character’, dressed in traditional fishermen’s oil-skins, seemed only too keen to have his photo taken with the ladies; though thankfully, he wasn’t covered in equally traditional fish oil and whale blubber (because that would have put them off!).

Driving back the other side of Isafjordur, our little excursion stopped at the Bunarfoss Falls in Skutulsfjordur (all these ‘fosses’ and ‘fjordurs’ can be really confusing!) Here we drank ice-cold melt-water from the mountain stream.

I may have mentioned the purple lupins before, when we were on the island of Heimaey but they are everywhere in Iceland, yet they are not endemic. However, they do spread like weeds and are a bit controversial. They were imported as an experiment from Alaska post WWII because it was discovered that they converted the nutrients in the volcanic deposits into ‘proper’ soil and help to reduce landslides – of which there are rather a lot, it seems!

Today’s was, in contrast to yesterday, a nice gentle excursion, made all the more pleasant by our cheery guide (who was a post-grad student from Tottenham, by the way!)

Departing Isafjordur, the cheeriness subsided when there was an ‘urgent announcement’ from Captain Olaf telling us that storm winds are predicted around the entrance to Prince Christian Sound in Greenland and that heavy ice-floes would also make it too dangerous to visit Nanortalik, the next port on our itinerary. It’s those Elves again……

Surinaams Museum presenteert boek over uniek erfgoed Trio

De fascinerende rotstekeningen (petrogliefen) van Werehpai zijn vereeuwigd in de nieuwste publicatie van het Surinaams Museum. Foto's, tekeningen en beschrijvingen van alle 313 rotstekeningen zijn opgenomen in dit boek van 400 pagina's. Daarmee is de unieke verzameling nu ook toegankelijk voor iedereen die niet naar zuidwest-Suriname kan reizen. Het boek is opgedragen aan de Trio, die het bestaan van Werehpai in het jaar 2000 wereldkundig maakten. Granman Ashongo gaf destijds toestemming voor research. Ruim 23 jaar later nam zijn kleinzoon en opvolger Jimmy Toeroemang het eerste exemplaar in ontvangst van archeoloog Aad Versteeg die namens het Surinaams Museum leiding gaf aan het onderzoek. In het jaar 2005 deden de researchers voor het eerst veldwerk te Werehpai. Archeoloog Aad Versteeg en landschapsecoloog Dirk Noordam hebben toen het complex van grote rotsblokken over de volle lengte van 350 meter gefotografeerd, opgemeten en op schaal getekend. Archeoloog Abelardo Sandoval van het Smithsonian Instituut uit Washington verzamelde potscherven en ander materiaal. In totaal heeft het team 36 dagen ter plekke gewerkt. Daarna volgden jaren van nadere studie, verwerking van de gegevens en de omzetting van de 313 tekeningen naar een schaal van 1:5. Het werk van de Peruaan Sandoval is voortgezet en verder uitgewerkt door Irene Meulenberg van de Archeologische Dienst van het ministerie van Onderwijs. Het erfgoed heet in de volksmond "de grotten van Werehpai". Een misvatting, zei onderzoeksleider Aad Versteeg bij de boekpresentatie. "Hier zijn gigantische rotsblokken over elkaar heen gevallen. De rotstekeningen zijn gemaakt in holtes onder en tussen die rotsblokken. De holtes vormden de huizen, zoals de Trio ze noemden, en die zijn weer onderverdeeld in kamers." In totaal zijn er zeven huizen met meerdere kamers. Zeker twintig rotstekeningen bevinden zich op drie meter hoogte. Die moeten dus zijn gemaakt vanaf een ladder, aldus Versteeg. Te Werehpai waren 5000 jaar geleden al mensen actief, blijkt uit het onderzoek. De rotstekeningen dateren uit het eerste millennium van onze jaartelling. Over het onderzoek heeft Conservation International afspraken gemaakt met wijlen granman Ashongo. Daarna kwam er ondersteuning van het Surinaams Museum, het Smithsonian Instituut uit Washington en de Archeologische Dienst van het ministerie van Onderwijs. Het boek over Werehpai, in full colour, telt 400 pagina’s, weegt 2,5 kilo en is verschenen als nummer 10 in de serie Libri Musei Surinamensis van het Surinaams Museum. Museumdirecteur Laddy van Putten is enthousiast. “Niet iedereen kan zich een trip naar zuid-Suriname veroorloven, maar nu kan wel iedereen genieten van de schoonheid van het Werehpai-complex. De uitgave is interessant voor iedereen met belangstelling voor ons erfgoed en biedt ook mooi studiemateriaal voor historici en archeologen in de dop.” Het boek is op 28 oktober aangeboden aan diverse bibliotheken. El Congreso Astronómico Escolar llama a estudiantes de todo el país a participar y vivir de cerca la investigación científica

Desde agujeros negros hasta cúmulos de galaxias, pasando por desarrollo de tecnología astronómica e incluso “ciencia ciudadana”, la 11va versión del Congreso Astronómico Escolar ya cuenta con sus postulaciones abiertas para todos los estudiantes y docentes interesados por descubrir más del universo.

El Congreso Astronómico Escolar, una de las mayores plataformas de divulgación de la ciencia para los estudiantes de enseñanza básica y media del país, abre sus postulaciones para su 11va edición, la cual espera continuar con el regreso a la presencialidad luego de la exitosa 10ma versión.

La iniciativa cuenta con la organización del Núcleo Milenio TITANS, el Centro de Astrofísica y Tecnologías Afines CATA, el Departamento de Astronomía de la Universidad de Concepción (UdeC) y el Instituto de Física y Astronomía de la Universidad de Valparaíso (UV).

El programa busca que jóvenes de 6to a 8vo básico, y de 1ro a 3ro medio, vivan de cerca la experiencia de creación de nuevo conocimiento científico.

En este sentido, la astrónoma de la UV e integrante del Núcleo Milenio TITANS, Dra. Patricia Arévalo Noordam, explica que “este Congreso permite a los estudiantes participar en proyectos de investigación astronómica, guiados por un astrónomo profesional, donde los mejores trabajos serán presentados de forma presencial en la Universidad de Concepción”.

Fases de trabajo

El proceso se divide en varios segmentos. Se inicia con una etapa previa de presentación de ideas de investigación, las cuales serán analizadas por el comité organizador del Congreso quienes seleccionarán las mejores propuestas para ser desarrolladas y presentadas en la nueva edición del evento.

A la selección de propuestas le sigue la asesoría científica de un astrónomo y/o el apoyo de un monitor, que será un graduado de Ciencias Físicas o Astronomía de las universidades participantes del Núcleo Milenio TITANS o el Centro de Astrofísica y Tecnologías Afines CATA.

Finalmente, quienes completen las sesiones virtuales de apoyo, a la vez que registran los avances de sus trabajos y presenten un informe escrito, podrán exponer sus trabajos en el 11vo Congreso Astronómico, que se realizará en dependencias de la Universidad de Concepción en noviembre de 2023.

Experiencias que marcan futuras carreras científicas

“La edición pasada fue súper exitosa. Tuvimos proyectos muy interesantes de distintas partes de Chile. Destaco la creatividad que tuvieron algunos grupos y la capacidad para hacer ciencia: el poder utilizar códigos, realizar cálculos e incluso construir instrumentos para hacer mediciones. Esto demuestra que el Congreso es efectivo para poder promover la ciencia entre los niños y niñas de nuestro país”, destacó el astrónomo perteneciente al Núcleo TITANS – CATA, Dr. Rodrigo Herrera Camus.

Uno de los participantes de la edición anterior fue el profesor Pedro Aros, docente de Ciencias Naturales del Kingston College de Concepción, quien formó parte de la 10ma edición del Congreso junto a dos estudiantes de educación básica, Felipe Castillo e Iris Michela.

Su investigación, “Glotones invisibles: en qué se parecen y diferencian los agujeros negros de la Vía Láctea y M87”, obtuvo el 1er lugar en su categoría, ganando un viaje al Observatorio Las Campanas, en la región de Atacama.

Los estudiantes, junto al grupo seleccionado de enseñanza media del Colegio San Pedro Nolasco de Valparaíso (Miguel Ángel Plaza y José Miguel), pasaron una noche en las instalaciones, viviendo de primera mano cómo astrónomos de todo el mundo desarrollan sus observaciones e investigaciones de talla mundial.

“Fue una experiencia inolvidable. Los niños quedaron impactados con las observaciones, la disponibilidad de las personas en el lugar y todo lo que pudieron conocer. Estuvimos en el telescopio Du Pont y en los gemelos Magallanes, donde conversamos con los operadores quienes nos explicaron su trabajo. Además, estaban conectados con tres astrónomos vía Zoom: uno conectado desde la India, otro de Estados Unidos y otro de Alemania”, recuerda el profesor Aros.

Respecto a los posibles temas de investigación, el Dr. Rodrigo Herrera comenta que “todos los temas son interesantes para estudiar, desde el análisis de la contaminación lumínica en los lugares donde vivimos, hasta investigar grandes bases de datos disponibles en internet para hacer “ciencia ciudadana”, donde cada persona puede ingresar a los portales, tomar observaciones y datos reales del universo, hacer análisis y descubrir cosas nuevas”.

Quienes estén interesados en participar pueden acceder a la web https://escueladeprofesores.cl/, donde se encuentran las bases y el formulario para postulaciones, el cual estará abierto hasta el viernes 7 de julio de 2023. Los resultados de la selección serán entregados en la misma web desde el 13 de agosto.

“Extendemos la invitación a los estudiantes de 6to básico a 3ro medio de todo el país, a participar en esta nueva edición de este maravilloso Congreso”, concluyó la astrónoma, Dra. Patricia Arévalo Noordam.
