Do you remember the story of Alina and Celina in the first Witcher? And the broken mirror? That was a quest object. Not an ordinary one. The mirror of Nehaleni, a magical artefact with oracular abilities. When it comes to mirrors I become very suspicious. Gaunter described himself to Geralt as a former merchant of mirrors, and that was not just a fable, he might indeed put his special mirrors at markets, and then, isn't it a perfect way to watch, to play, to mock?
The Monster Deck welcomes a night wraith.

A still flame veiled over the hearth, suspended in an anxious inhale amongst the wheatdust gloom.
A single beat of iron-scraping step; a flicker peering into the slender shadow cast across the floor.

Poludnitsa
Poludnitsa is a character common to the various Slavic countries of Eastern Europe. She is referred to as Południca in Polish, Полудница (Poludnitsa) in Serbian, Bulgarian and Russian, Polednice in Czech, Poludnica in Slovak, Připołdnica in Upper Sorbian, and Полознича (Poloznicha) in Komi, Chirtel Ma in Yiddish. The plural form of this word is poludnitsy (or poludnici). Poludnitsa is a noon demon in Slavic mythology. She can be referred to in English as "Lady Midday", "Noonwraith" or "Noon Witch". She was usually pictured as a young woman dressed in white that roamed field bounds. She assailed folk working at noon causing heatstrokes and aches in the neck, sometimes she even caused madness.

In some accounts, she symbolizes the midday star, thereby being the sister of Zarya-Zarenitsa (the morning star; also called Utrenica), Vechorka (the evening star; also called Wieczornica/Vechernitsa) and Kupalnitsa (the night star; also called Nocnica/Nochnitsa); Poludnitsa is the second youngest among the sisters, with Zarya-Zarenitsa being the youngest and Kupalnitsa being the oldest.
Poludnitsa, who makes herself evident in the middle of hot summer days, takes the form of whirling dust clouds and carries a scythe, sickle or shears; most likely the shears would be of an older style, not akin to modern scissors. She will stop people in the field to ask them difficult questions or engage them in conversation. If anyone fails to answer a question or tries to change the subject, she will cut off their head or strike them with illness. She may appear as an old hag, a beautiful woman, or a 12-year-old girl, and she was useful in scaring children away from valuable crops. She is only seen on the hottest part of the day and is a personification of a sun-stroke.
According to some northern Russian regions, Poludnitsa has a giant frying pan in her hands, with which she either blocks the rye from the scorching sun's rays, or burns the rye along with the herbs during the flowering period. She may also appear at midnight and show a person how to find a flower that can make them invisible, as was believed in the Arkhangelsk Governorate.
Poludnitsa, according to beliefs, loves to dance. If she sees a girl lying down to rest in the field, she will wake her up and begin to persuade her to dance. If the girl agrees, she will be forced to dance until the evening dawn. Poludnitsa cannot be beaten in dancing; however, if such a girl is found, the noon spirit will present her with a rich dowry.

My Hazbin Hotel Overlord OC (tw: lots of blood)
Tumblr media
Her name is Carol Lily and she died in 1952 when her fiance cheated on her with her sister on their wedding day then went on a rampage when both of their families sided with him and didn't even comfort her, killing them all then herself. I decided to base her design on Noonwraiths as they are the ghosts of brides that died violently on their weddings. Her industry is fashion as sewing was the only thing that calmed her. She is friends with Rosie as dispite being a matchmaker she understands that she is still hurting from the betrayal and doesn't want to risk that again. She always wears the dress she died in as the blood fused it to her skin and has permanent tear stains. What do you guys think?

NAME: Wraith
RARITY: ★★★☆☆
THREAT: ★★★★☆ | Usually lethal unless someone comes armed with both knowledge and iron. Wraiths are limited by the distance they may travel and conditions they’re able to come out in.
HABITAT: Due to the extreme and isolated circumstances wraiths are created in, many still linger in frigid mountains, sunbaked crop fields, and other inhospitable places. They’re forced to stay near their place of death.
DESCRIPTION: Wicked’s Rest is brimming with possibilities for your death. While many die in the jaws of monsters, the hands of another person, or even of natural illness, others perish after protracted exposure to the elements. With mountains, fields, woods to get lost in, and an ocean ready to sweep people away, it’s no wonder wraiths haunt the town. Wraiths are ghosts who died alone and in isolated locations, filled with desperation and the will to survive, embittered that it failed them. As ghosts, they usually linger around the place of their death, showing themselves under similar environmental circumstances as the ones they died in. They’re driven by their own resentment and try to give others the same miserable death they were forced to endure. Most resemble skeletal figures draped in billowing, spectral white robes. Because they appear repeatedly in the same place, some wraiths have caution signs posted around where they’re most often seen – this ends up being near where they died.
ABILITIES: Wraiths are able to cause physical harm to people with their sharp nails and other abilities, which are tied to the circumstances of their death. They can typically be seen by all, even those who don’t normally see ghosts, though they can become intangible at will to avoid attempted attacks. Some wraiths can imitate and throw their voices to draw people closer to them. This seems to be more of an individual thing than based on which variant of wraith it is. Wraiths otherwise do not talk but have been known to make haunting moaning noises as if in eternal pain. Wraiths become stronger with age as their resentment only grows.
WEAKNESS: Wraiths always have a weakness to the very thing that would have given them relief immediately prior to their death, and some exorcists may even figure out workarounds that are symbolic rather than literal. When exposed to this weakness, the wraith will be forced to be tangible, making them vulnerable to the strike of iron weapons. When struck through the heart with iron, the wraith will be gone for good. While wraiths can stray a little from their place of death, they will always be forced to appear back in that spot a full day later. A barrier of salt may keep a wraith contained within a certain area as a protective measure, and this is especially useful if someone knows where a wraith appears every day; they can lay a circle of salt around the spot, trapping them. If a wraith is new, meaning the body is still present and mostly intact, the wraith will vanish if the body is given a proper burial and rites.
TYPES:
Noonwraith (Poludnita, Lady Midday): When someone dies of heat-related cause, there’s a chance they’ll become a noonwraith, haunting the area they died in – typically farmland or distant meadows. Noonwraiths are full of malice, their desire to have their thirst quenched and their body cooled down following them into death and the afterlife. They use their touch to spread their dehydration and desiccation to anyone they can – the touch will immediately cause dehydration in the victim, and will escalate to a full-on heat stroke and then death with prolonged contact. Despite the association with noon time, noonwraiths can appear at any point in the day when the sun is up. As soon as the sun begins to set, noonwraiths dissipate for the night, appearing back where they died the next morning. Some noonwraiths can be found near freshwater, trying and failing to cup it in their hands and drink. Noonwraiths can be forced tangible by exposing them to magical, artificial, or atmospheric cold.
Frostwraith (Yuki-Onna): These wraiths are most commonly found in the mountains, where they died due to exposure to the cold, avalanches, or similar. As such, they’re found mostly in colder areas and only come out during the cold weather, usually at night to avoid the warmth of the sun. Graupel Hill’s weather allows for them to be around at all times of the year within the area. Frostwraiths drain heat and life from their victims with a touch, causing them to freeze and perish of hypothermia with prolonged contact. Frostwraiths have a thick, penetrating cold that surrounds them, and this alone can be deadly if one isn’t bundled up. The oldest frostwraiths can even cause a localized snowstorm. They can’t turn intangible in a warmer environment, so exposure to heat or fire will allow for the use of an iron weapon to end their suffering. Seeing many people and animals frozen solid in blocks of ice is a sure sign that you’re approaching a frostwraith’s place of death.
Terrawraith: One of the less common wraith variants, terrawraiths are made when someone died trapped under the earth, generally as a result of being buried alive, but sometimes due to a cave in or other unfortunate circumstances. These wraiths can take a few different forms depending on what kind of sediment they died in – some might be “sandwraiths,” while others are more akin to “dirtwraiths”. They have some control over the ground, and attempt to pull others underneath, delivering the same death. These wraiths may be given piece if someone digs up their skeleton or fresh remains and leaves them exposed, skull looking up at a blue sky. Under no circumstances should they be reburied elsewhere, even a proper cemetery. Some exorcists have found that burying something of dear importance to the wraith, some kind of symbol that they weren’t forgotten, within the grounds they died in, will also curb their activities and allow them to move on.

aka the nightwraith witch, the noonwraith witch and the twilight witch in czech, are old slavic witches which originally served the purpose to scare children (and people) who stayed outside their homes at these dangerous hours.
