🌿 who is your favourite character you've ever written?

ok this one is pretty hard.... but probably valerian from my regular/linear novel wip. he's SO chaotic, very vain, sometimes cruel and selfish, but very vulnerable too & with very relatable wants/fears. he's the closest thing to an antihero i've ever written (or will write... since i only have a half finished "zero draft" of this story) and i just adore the way his mind works and the relationships he ends up developing.

ok, for briarheart it's probably nima. i know we arent supposed to have favorite ROs but well... they are mine. they are a bit like valerian since both are /very/ messy (even though nima is harmless in comparison.... very confused/lost instead of very selfish). i love how vulnerable they are but also how unpredictable they can be as well.

since im also working on fantasy romance wip rn (regular/linear fiction, not an if, im posting more about it on my writing blog) there's also loifa, who is a lot like valerian and nima. in fact, a venn diagram of my current favorite ocs would look like this:

starship doesnt work. the $5 billion spent (not including $2 billion for launches) is not final. additionally $1 billion per launch (for a rocket that doesnt work) compared to $2 billion per launch isnt the difference between $1,000,000 and $100. compared to its competitors starship is not 10,000 times more cost effective it is at best twice as and currently not at all (since it does not work yet)

Anon-kun, I seriously considered saving this ask until after the third Starship launch, currently scheduled for spring 2024. I wonder: did you say these same things about SpaceX's Falcon 9? Back before landing a spacecraft became a routine occurrence, there were many people who complained that SpaceX was wasting money and wasting fuel trying to build a reusable booster. I often wonder what those skeptics say now about the value of reusable rockets.

You say that the Starship does not "work" yet, but I tell you: the SLS does not work at all. The same metrics you use to say that Starship doesn't work apply equally to the SLS, and show that the SLS is financially infeasible.

The traditional space-industrial complex is having trouble building SLS rockets fast enough to meet the Artemis launch cadence: one launch each in 2024, 2025 2026, 2028, 2929. There are concerns that the SLS won't be ready in time to launch astronauts to the Moon, and this, mind you, is for a program which has been running since the 2000s. Artemis 4 has already been delayed to 2026 at the earliest because the required ground support equipment for the SLS Block 1B rocket won't be ready before November 2026.

The next Starship is expected to launch in 3-4 months. SpaceX expects to build an assembly line to build Starships at the rate of one Starship per week. SpaceX plans to sell these launches for $10 million per launch. Even if SpaceX sold launches on the fully-reusable Starship for the same price as the partially-reusable Falcon 9, at about $62 million per launch, that cost is still ... $62m/100t * 95t/$2b = 0.02 ... at Falcon 9 costs, the Starship launches mass to LEO at 2% of the cost of the SLS. The SLS will be priced out of the market, because not even Congress wants to pay $2 billion per launch when you can get the same capability for $62 million per launch. And SpaceX expects the cost to be lower than that.

Sure, there have been many explosions in SpaceX's program. That's because SpaceX is working on a different development model than the space-industrial complex. We saw that with the early Falcon 9 landings: the landing of the rocket was sugar on the cake; the real precious thing was the information received in the attempt, which enables faster iteration. Changing how SLS stages would cost billions of dollars and take 10 years of change orders. SpaceX iterated that in less than a year.

I predict that, by the end of 2024, SpaceX will have successfully orbited a Starship, and will be selling commercial launch slots.

Hi Rayllum. Noni again

Hope all is well.

One criticism that I constantly see over and over again is how S4 completely destroyed Rayla's character. Saying that the writers did completely ruin and destroyed Rayla's character for no reason at all. That they did such a disservice to her, why didn't they not give her any growth at all in S4. I've been seeing it on both reddit and YouTube. Why did the writers make her unlikable, how TTM was completely unnecessary. How Runaan and Ethari don't seem to love Rayla at all in seasons 1-3, among others things. Like such unnecessary harsh and cruel criticism towards the writers about how they ruined Rayla's character.

Which I don't agree with to an extent. Even though I had my issues with how they handled Rayla in S4, I feel that the writers foreshadowed things in S4 that might have happened to her, what she possibly went through during those two years as well as having some strong levels of importance and growth for her character development going forward. I know you've mentioned this before about those who don't pay attention or see what's going on with Rayla. It just bothers and upsets me that some people really don't truly understand Rayla's character at all or don't even see some of her changes in S4.

Hope you don't mind this. I just want to see S5 so badly because I have a feeling this is where Rayla's character arc is going to really shine and prosper going forward and in the seasons to come. I can't wait to see it. S5 is about to unleash the tides, and I'm so here for it.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts! I've said before I definitely would've appreciated more insight into Rayla's time away in S4, but that's more of a "I hope the show addresses this eventually" thing than "this is a fault of this specific season" tbh.

To me, the biggest thing that's indicative of 1) how well people are grasping her characterization and 2) how well people are able to predict her plot arcs comes down to one thing, which is really whether TTM surprised them or not.

Because like, did I see Rayla walking away coming? No, I didn't. But did I know this specific issue of "Rayla is too self sacrificial and prone to trying to do things alone" was going to be the biggest relationship hurdle her and Callum will have to jump? Yeah, I did, ever since 2x07 happened, and then I just waited for her tendencies to be brought up again in a negative light for like, 3+ years afterwards. Because you don't have a character say shit like "Don't you worry about my hand, the egg is all that matters now" and "It doesn't matter what happens to me" and especially "But if I die, I'll just be paying the price they should have paid a long time ago" and have it go nowhere. Previously, I thought Rayllum would have a smaller arc and a big blow out fight, but in retrospect a more dramatic route like this makes sense

A lot of meta and predictions is a guessing game, for sure, but while we might not always (or even often) assemble the puzzle pieces in the right manner, I think being able to identify the puzzle pieces at all is 1) a skill and 2) kinda important. Reviews aren't necessarily 'analysis' per se, and people are allowed to have opinions / feel however they want of course, but like - idk, not all critique is either made in good faith and/or grounded in canon nevermind analysis, y'know?

I have finally locked in my Diva Tony nomination prediction post for the tournament blog. Last eligibility ruling came out today, and it's got some upsetting news for Leading Actress in a Play. Anika Noni Rose is eligible as featured, so it's probably shaping up to be a four-woman race with exclusively white blonde women from Hollywood. And I am not pleased.

Today's Focus

03.22.24 - TGIF! I hope it warms up over the weekend; it's supposed to be much nicer next week and I'm sick of the cold. Even cuddling cats isn't warming me up. Though, I slept like ass last night so I think it's extra coffee for me today. My ootd is a Marilyn tshirt I got when my great-grandma (my Nonie) passed away; it was in pretty bad shape but I put it through the laundry stripping process and while the stains aren't completely gone the shirt is now much more appropriate to wear outside.

Work - Left nothing for myself again; practically got nothing in yesterday either. Since I'm working remotely I predict I have nothing to do today except maybe one of the two mandatory trainings I have to complete.

Background Noise - In terms of YT, Friday is the day I just watch whatever I have lined up on my Watch Later, mostly in order. Since I'm remote, the DVR will be my primary background noise, so there are a few YT videos I'm prioritizing.

Yesterday I made it through 23 different videos so I feel like that's fantastic progress.

Study - It's Wikipedia day and I have a bunch of articles already pulled up to read. I want to see how many I can read over the weekend.

That being said, I read a lot yesterday! I read one chapter of the two books I have started at work, and a few pages of both my big coffee table Dolly Parton books. I also read about 17 articles on the Horizon IT scandal, and about a dozen (12) random articles that passed my way.

Extras - It is Friday, so I have to clean the catbox; I will also focus on checking off extra chores from my household journal. Dinner is pizza for the spouse because I'm making roasted salmon for Dad and I and he doesn't like fish like that. The salmon is going to be roasted on a sheet pan with some cherry tomatoes and yellow squash, with long-grain wild rice on the side. Three episodes of Carranger and a couple more of Batman tonight; it's Garo over the weekend along with an analysis by Pirate Software on the Apex Legends hack, probably while we play Pokemon. Writing continues, slowly but surely.

Ten Questions Book Review - The Prison Healer by Lynette Noni

What is it? In the fictional jail of Zalindov, the young healer finds herself in a sticky position. Will she be able to face a sickness outbreak, save the very few friends she has from the many risks of the jail, and face the Trials by Ordeal instead of the dying Rebel Queen, like her family asked her to do from beyond the walls of Zalindov?

Who should read it and why? This book is perfect for you if you need a bit of magical world building in your life (but not too much), if you actually like your siblings, if you always cheer for the underdog, if you like heroines who are lucky but not really good at everything they do, and if you like to say the sentence "the plot chickens".

Which genre(s) is it? Fantasy, YA.

What is the setting? Zalindov, cruel fictional prison.

How are the characters? I would love to say positive things about the characters, but I only liked like. Two of them. And I think that many of the main characters suffered from the "The Author Doesn't Want the Reader to See the Plot Twist" syndrome (terrible name but you get the idea) and towards the end they begin to be a tad unreasonable. I think plot twists, especially plot twists that depend on the main characters directly, should be reasonable, call me old school for it, I don't care. Not all the characters are like this and not all plot twists are a bit alover the place, but I think that the book could have been much better if there was more care in these things.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of the novel? The world building, while in need of expanding a bit over the gates of the jail, is actually interesting. The one weaknes I can point out is the plot. How can you make something predictable and yet unreasonable at the same time? How?

Did I cry and/or laugh? I have to admit, unfortunately, that I stopped to sob during one specific extremely emotional scene involving basically the only character I cared about. I didn't laugh, I think.

Who shouldn’t read the book? There's a lot of violence, in Zalindov. Especially sexual violence. And torture, death, general cruelty, lots of blood and sickness and drug abuse. Don't read if you think this will make you feel bad or trigger you.

Any random comment? If I read one more time that this book is perfect for fans of Sarah J. Maas (never read anything by her, unfortunately) I'll very likely lose my mind.

Also, I haven’t gotten asks about it because my nonies are smart cookies who don’t need the obvious spoon-fed to them, but just on the slim chance that there’s someone like--”Oh, but why is it okay for Luka to do this but not Alya?”

1 - Never said it was okay for Luka to know/keep it a secret exactly (I would’ve personally done the same given the circumstances, but that’s just me), more just pointing out the double standard. There are also multiple factors that were out of Luka’s control when he learned (he couldn’t have predicted that his redirected shot from the akuma would hit Ladybug, and Chat willingly let himself get hit), whereas it’s not like Alya was the best choice to be told at the time; Marinette was basically on the verge of a mental breakdown and Alya happened to be there.

2 - I have been given zero in-canon evidence to believe that Luka is doing this with a self-serving goal in mind. If Luka is doing this selfishly, I’ll cross that bridge when I get there, but Fu has stated that a snake “must be wise and selfless enough to not use Second Chance for their own ends,” so I trust Luka to make the right decisions. There had to have been past snakes who found out their leader’s identities, and I imagine they’ve all told or haven’t told the leader for different reasons and with different results (whether good or bad). Alya, meanwhile, has been extremely selfish and her telling her boyfriend and then not telling Marinette about it was only for her comfort; not Marinette’s, not Nino’s (who was over the situation at that point), hers.

Basically, I consider Luka trustworthy while Alya is not. Alya has a track record of going against Marinette’s/Ladybug’s wishes because “boyfriends” or for her own personal gain. Luka does not and has repeatedly put Marinette first, so I have no reason not to believe that he’s doing what he feels is best based on the limited information he has.
