and also, moving the scars thing from "no scars at all" to "Scars will be heavily scrutinized" is just taking it from "all scars are inherently nsfw and too obscene to be seen other people" to "scars from especially traumatic events are inherently nsfw and too obscene to be seen by other people", which really isn't that much better! all we've done is very slightly shrink the definition of the boundaries of the category of The Unmentionables, we still haven't stopped having an Unmentionable Ugly Freaks Who Shouldn't Be Seen Because They're Too Damaged category! it was bad enough when it felt like even the most basic scarless missing limb skins for adult dragons were on thin ice with them (and even then only out of fear of backlash for banning them outright), but this is just a straw meets camel situation.
"protect the children" rules about never depicting any kind of healed injuries or deformities or """"body horror"""" are fucking awful, no matter what, no matter where they are, and continuing to uphold that hays-code-ass standard for everything in media that some people are simply too grotesque to be seen by others is BARELY a step above and stems directly from the exact same mindset that leads to straight up ugliness laws (a real thing, look it up. the only way we're ever going to get rid of laws like this permanently is to root out every trace of the underlying mindset that it's even possible for someone to be enough of a walking cognitohazard that it's reasonable on any level for "normal" people to be "protected" from having to see them, entirely). people need to get used to the fact that people they find ugly and even disturbing exist and shouldn't have to hide themselves from the public for their comfort. you know what really protects the children? not being told they're too hideous and disturbing to Normal People to fucking exist, over something they have no control over and obtained through being traumatized as often as it's obtained from scraping a knee on the pavement while riding a bike, and growing up in a world where they're acclimated to the existence of Uglytm and Scarytm people from a young age so they don't have a knee-jerk horror response to just fucking seeing them. would help a damn lot with bullying i'd imagine too. this isn't about protecting kids, it's never about protecting kids, it's about comforting adults that think kids are pure porcelain dolls of purity (and keeping them from having to look at those who have Failed At Being A Child Aka Filling The Role Of A Perfect Pure Untarnished Doll Properly) for them to own and control as they please, and it's about preserving good normal undamaged people's subconscious false sense of security that they're somehow better than the damaged and deformed because they've so far been lucky enough to not be noticeably Altered, so that they don't have to think about the fact that it's even a real nontheoretical possibility in the actual physical world that they inhabit that they could potentially be rendered like that too.

Thank you for the ask!! This one's really been fighting me, but here's what I've got!
“stop.” everyone halts. whether due to his command, to the hand he extended to physically block them from taking a step beyond the forest’s edge, or to simple surprise that he’d said anything in the last hour, hunter doesn't know nor particularly care.

What is culture?
two quick blurbs on culture. I wrote the 2d first but the 1st is punchier. 2d is sort of the background for the first. culture is medicine, it’s engineering, law, social visions and longterm development projects, logistics, agriculture, dialect. it’s family and caring for the next generation. communal joy and shared hope, mourning and celebration. all attuned to specific, nontheoretical…

Trying this for the first time, hi everyone! I've picked a few:
toh fic 3 - prose vers omg: I have the whole outline for this one, it's just the writing the thing itself that's been slow going. It's a lil thing about Evelyn and Caleb 👉👈
nontheoretical toh fic (hypothetical toh fic but in the process of being written)/falling fic: a file name monster asjfaskfjs. This one's a post-Thanks To Them canon divergence thing with a focus on Hunter? if you've happened to see "hands. grasping" on ao3 then this is the same universe, that one's technically from the middle of this whole thing.
унив. au (univ. au in case you don't know cyrillic): this one is a little oc* university au thing that's been so close to the end for such a long time ahaha.
A snippet from toh fic 3:
Evelyn’s first memory was of her father’s hands, carving. She wasn’t sure what he was making. Maybe a ratworm. Perhaps a skullbird. A selkiedomus, even. In her child’s mind, she hadn’t connected all the pieces to figure out the end result ahead of time. She just loved watching the process. All she saw were her father’s steady hands, the flickering light from the fireplace glinting off the carving knife her mother had made, and the perfectly curled slivers of blue wood.
so yeah!
WIP Wednesday Game
It’s WIP Wednesday, time for a little accountability, sharing your work, and getting a kick in the pants.
Here’s how it works:
In a reblog of this post (so people can find you in the notes) or new thread (w/ rules attached) if you want to play on your own, post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.
Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to play!
After you’ve posted, people can send you an ask with one of your file names. You must then write 3 sentences in that file. If the filename is one you can't share from (for example, an event or gift fic), write 3 sentences on it anyway, and then 3 more on another to share.
That’s it! You can invite others to join in, or just post. I’ll be searching the reblogs to find people to send asks to!
If you’re reading this, you’re invited!
If you see someone posting a WIP Wednesday Game snippet, send them an ask! Make them write.
Requested/Friend event mentions under the cut! If you'd like to be pinged next week, let me know!

Seven Step Practice of Loving Kindness
(This has been excerpted from Pema's book "Comfortable with Uncertainty: 108 Teachings on Cultivating Fearlessness and Compassion".)
"To move from aggression to unconditional loving-kindness can seem like a daunting task. But we start with what’s familiar. The instruction for cultivating limitless maitri is to first find the tenderness that we already have. We touch in with our gratitude or appreciation—our current ability to feel goodwill. In a very nontheoretical way we contact the soft spot of bodhichitta. Whether we find it in the tenderness of feeling love or the vulnerability of feeling lonely is immaterial. If we look for that soft, unguarded place, we can always find it.
This formal seven-step practice uses the first line of the Four Limitless Ones chant (see page v). You can also put the aspiration in your own words.
1-Awaken loving-kindness for yourself. “May I enjoy happiness and the root of happiness,” or use your own words.
2-Awaken it for someone for whom you spontaneously feel unequivocal goodwill and tenderness, such as your mother, your child, your spouse, your dog. “May (name) enjoy happiness and the root of happiness.”
3-Awaken loving-kindness for someone slightly more distant, such as a friend or neighbor, again saying their name and aspiring for their happiness, using the same words.
4-Awaken loving-kindness for someone about whom you feel neutral or indifferent, using the same words.
5-Awaken loving-kindness for someone you find difficult or offensive.
6-Let the loving-kindness grow big enough to include all the beings in the five steps above. (This step is called “dissolving the barriers.”) Say, “May I, my beloved, my friend, the neutral person, the difficult person all together enjoy happiness and the root of happiness.”
7-Extend loving-kindness toward all beings throughout the universe. You can start close to home and widen the circle even bigger. “May all beings enjoy happiness and the root of happiness.”
At the end of the practice, drop the words, drop the wishes, and simply come back to the nonconceptual simplicity of sitting meditation.

There’s No Such Thing as Free Will
Stephen Cave The Atlantic Originally published June 2016 Here is an excerpt: What is new, though, is the spread of free-will skepticism beyond the laboratories and into the mainstream. The number of court cases, for example, that use evidence from neuroscience has more than doubled in the past decade—mostly in the context of defendants arguing that their brain made them do it. And many people are absorbing this message in other contexts, too, at least judging by the number of books and articles purporting to explain “your brain on” everything from music to magic. Determinism, to one degree or another, is gaining popular currency. The skeptics are in ascendance. This development raises uncomfortable—and increasingly nontheoretical—questions: If moral responsibility depends on faith in our own agency, then as belief in determinism spreads, will we become morally irresponsible? And if we increasingly see belief in free will as a delusion, what will happen to all those institutions that are based on it? (cut) Determinism not only undermines blame, Smilansky argues; it also undermines praise. Imagine I do risk my life by jumping into enemy territory to perform a daring mission. Afterward, people will say that I had no choice, that my feats were merely, in Smilansky’s phrase, “an unfolding of the given,” and therefore hardly praiseworthy. And just as undermining blame would remove an obstacle to acting wickedly, so undermining praise would remove an incentive to do good. Our heroes would seem less inspiring, he argues, our achievements less noteworthy, and soon we would sink into decadence and despondency. The info is here.

After all those suggestions about mummifying her and sitting her with Harrow's parents, or launching her body into the sun, someone sneaks in and steals Gideon's corpse out from under Harrow while she's sleeping. That's just rude
Not to be morbid or anything but I think it's hilarious that from the very first chapter it was a running topic of banter what Harrow will do with Gideon's dead body, and then in the epilogue Harrow is like "wtf do you mean Gideon's body is missing" like. they had plans for it and everything
#this was the original point of the post#but now that I've seen people tagging it as harrow spoilers I'm very excited what Harrow might do with Gideon's actual nontheoretical corpse#gideon the ninth#gtn spoilers#gideon the ninth spoilers#gideon nav#harrow nonagesimus#I have my own theories about who took Gideon and why#but that's a different post
