In September 2017, ARDEX Group announced a new product ARDEX K 521 which would be available at all ARDEX authorized polished topping distributors throughout North America. Did you know different types of tiles require different setting materials?

Not all setting materials are created equal!

There are different types of mud/mortar/adhesive products that cover the many types of tile you may want to use in your home or business.

Let's go through a few of the most popular so you can see why this matters to you, what your choices are, and how to match the tile you purchased to the adhesive needed.

Large Format Tile

“When planning your tile installation you need to know more than what color, you also need to know what size tile you're going to use to help determine the best products to use to make your job last.”

Large Format Tile or Stone

Do you plan on using tiles larger than the normal 1 foot by 1 foot square? Are your tiles heavy stone? If you answered yes, then you will need special adhesive/mortar. Below is a list of mortar that you should use for the life of your project.

Mapei Ultraflex LFT - Designed for Large Format Tile

If you have big tile or large stone, they need LFT mortar. Ultraflex LFT is a premium, nonsag, large-and-heavy-tile mortar and thin-set mortar designed for large-format and heavy tile and stone for interior/exterior floor, wall and countertop installations. This mortar has a high content of the unique dry polymer, resulting in excellent adhesion to the substrate and tile. It is formulated with Easy Glide Technology™ for ease of application.

Mapei Ultraflor

Sometimes you get into a situation where you need things done faster than normal. YOU CAN! Businesses and homeowners sometimes have a small time window that means they need to speed things up. If that happens, you can use a mortar that will set up much faster than normal which means you get to the grouting stage hours faster than using traditional mortar. Below is a list of the mortar used for fast set up.

*Note - if you use a fast setting mortar, you also need to work much faster. We recommend dry laying the tile first, so you can place it in time, or else the mortar will set up before you are ready and no one wants to deal with that.

Ultraflex RS - Designed for Setting up Fast

Ultraflex RS is a premium-grade, single-component, high-performance, polymer-modified, rapid-setting thin-set mortar for interior and exterior installations of tile. This mortar has a high content of the unique dry polymer, resulting in excellent adhesion to the substrate and tile. Ultraflex RS is a FastTrack Ready™ product, allowing grouting in 2 to 3 hours. It can be used for both interior and exterior installations of tile in most residential floor and wall applications. In commercial applications, use on interior floor and wall installations and exterior floors. Ultraflex RS meets or exceeds ANSI A118.4F, ANSI A118.11 and ANSI A118.15F requirements for fast-setting mortars when mixed with water.

Rapid Setting Tile Mortar is a rapid-setting, polymer-enriched (“modified”) mortar for installing a wide range of tile and stone over a diverse range of substrates in thin-set applications.

Ultraflex 2

Ultraflex 2 is a professional-grade, single-component, high-performance, polymer-modified thin-set mortar for interior and exterior installations of ceramic, porcelain and dimensional natural-stone tile. This mortar has a high content of the unique dry polymer, resulting in excellent adhesion to the substrate and tile. Ultraflex 2 meets or exceeds ANSI A118.4 and ANSI A118.11 requirements when mixed with water. Ultraflex 2 can be used for interior and exterior installations of tile in most residential floor and wall applications.
