Harmful ‘Forever Chemicals’ Removed From Water With New Electrocatalysis Method - Technology Org
A novel approach using laser-made nanomaterials created from nonprecious metals could lay the foundation for globally scalable remediation techniques.
TEST THE WATER: Materials science PhD student Ziyi “Bruce” Meng tests samples of water to see how effective a new electrocatalysis technique developed at Rochester is at remediating perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) pollution. PFOS was once widely used for stain-resistant products but is now banned in much of the world. (University of Rochester photo / J. Adam Fenster)
Scientists from the University of Rochester have developed new electrochemical approaches to clean up pollution from “forever chemicals” found in clothing, food packaging, firefighting foams, and a wide array of other products. A new Journal of Catalysis study describes nanocatalysts developed to remediate per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, known as PFAS.
The researchers, led by assistant professor of chemical engineering Astrid Müller, focused on a specific type of PFAS called Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS), which was once widely used for stain-resistant products but is now banned in much of the world for its harm to human and animal health.
PFOS is still widespread and persistent in the environment despite being phased out by US manufacturers in the early 2000s, continuing to show up in water supplies.
POLLUTION MEETS SOLUTION: Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are often referred to as “forever chemicals” because they break down very slowly. Rochester scientists have developed nanocatalysts that can more affordably remediate a specific type of PFAS called Perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS). (University of Rochester photo / J. Adam Fenster)
Müller and her team of materials science PhD students created the nanocatalysts using her unique combination of expertise in ultrafast lasers, materials science, chemistry, and chemical engineering.
“Using pulsed laser in liquid synthesis, we can control the surface chemistry of these catalysts in ways you cannot do in traditional wet chemistry methods,” says Müller. “You can control the size of the resulting nanoparticles through the light-matter interaction, basically blasting them apart.”
The scientists then adhere the nanoparticles to carbon paper that is hydrophilic, or attracted to water molecules. That provides a cheap substrate with a high surface area. Using lithium hydroxide at high concentrations, they completely defluorinated the PFOS chemicals.
DEFLUORINATION IN PROGRESS: By performing electrocatalysis using laser-made nanocatalysts adhered to a hydrophilic carbon paper, Rochester researchers have created cheaper and more effective ways to remediate perfluorooctane sulfonate (PFOS) pollution. Image credit: University of Rochester photo / J. Adam Fenster
Müller says that for the process to work at a large scale, they will need to treat at least a cubic meter at a time. Crucially, their novel approach uses all nonprecious metals, unlike existing methods that require boron-doped diamond. By their calculations, treating a cubic meter of polluted water using boron-doped diamond would cost $8.5 million; the new method is nearly 100 times cheaper.
Harnessing PFAS chemicals in sustainable ways
In future studies, Müller hopes to understand why lithium hydroxide works so well and whether even less expensive, more abundant materials can be substituted to bring the cost down further. She also wants to apply the method to an array of PFAS chemicals that are still prevalently used but have been linked to health issues ranging from development in babies to kidney cancer.
Müller says that despite their issues, outright banning all PFAS chemicals and substances is not practical because of their usefulness in not only consumer products, but in green technologies as well.
MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE: The scientists adhered laser-made nanocatalysts to carbon paper that they made hydrophilic (water-attracting) using a rapid, green-chemistry process that Astrid Müller invented in earlier work. Image credit: University of Rochester photo / J. Adam Fenster
“I would argue that in the end, a lot of decarbonization efforts—from geothermal heat pumps to efficient refrigeration to solar cells—depend on the availability of PFAS,” says Müller. “I believe it’s possible to use PFAS in a circular, sustainable way if we can leverage electrocatalytic solutions to break fluorocarbon bonds and get the fluoride back out safely without putting it into the environment.”
Although commercialization is a long way off, Müller filed a patent with support from URVentures, and foresees it being used at wastewater treatment facilities and by companies to clean up contaminated sites where they used to produce these PFAS chemicals. She also calls it a social justice issue.
GIVE IT THE GREEN LIGHT: The researchers create catalysts using pulsed laser in liquids synthesis, controlling the surface chemistry of the nanomaterials in ways that are not possible using traditional wet chemistry methods. Image credit: University of Rochester photo / J. Adam Fenster
“Often in areas with lower income across the globe, there’s more pollution,” says Müller. “An advantage of an electrocatalytic approach is that you can use it in a distributed fashion with a small footprint using electricity from solar panels.”

I headcanon the Bëorians wearing very simple jewelry, and mostly made of either nonprecious metals, or wood, glass, or ceramic beads. What they have made of gold and gems mostly comes from the Elves, and even if they keep them for special occasions, they are not as attached to them as the Elves are.

... y'know the accidental proposal bit could get pretty niche what with all the hijinks on the grand line. a daisy chain but the species evolved and was later cultivated so it won't wilt for a standard engagement period. each person taking one side of a cocina shell. a town that follows penguin traditions and just find pretty (nonprecious) stones or seaglass for one another. leith beans ace from behind with a pebble for attention and the innkeep gives them the honeymoon suite.
You know.. this is exactly the kinda shit I love and am now contemplating them getting accidentally married in like 20 different locales.
Consider additionally:
Picking up a progressively bigger and bigger rock to show off their strength
Flower ring toss
Race to climb to the top of the tree with no gear
Slay a monster and present its head
Noodling
Holding hands (gasp, how scandalous Karen)
Steal The Egg™
Their eyes connect (like a fuckin Pokemon battle, only it's marriage. Which with these two dinguses is basically a Pokemon battle)

Nothing about this was done well. The best I can say about it is that the Chinese siblings were both hot, and that it wasn’t, like, a cheap disaster---it’d be an egregious stretch to even call it a nonprecious gemstone, but it was polished, after a fashion.

Crystal Healing Course - Garima Goyal
The Crystals are beautiful conscious beings that help us create an energy loop for wishes and needs that we are finding hard to manifest. Crystal healing courses are provided by Garima Goyal. The internal structure of the crystals is so regularly formed that they display highly organized electromagnetic fields. The law is that the energy always flows from high areas to low areas to balance the energy everywhere. The crystals can be precious like a diamond, ruby or semi-precious like peridot, turquoise, or nonprecious like quartz and its variety.

Abour a month ago I realised that sometime in the past I've managed to create a perfect (for me) fidget thing:
Tumblr media
It's a stone on a string that I wrapped (knotted-tied) around a random nonprecious metal ring (doesn't ring on metal detector).
As mentioned above, it's a stone.
Shape is irregular, which makes it interesting to explore.
Partially transparent - pretty lights make it glow pretty. Nonuniformity of colour is absolutely vital for the perpetually roving restless gaze.
Smooth and soft to the touch. Very pleasant. Don't ask me to explain how a stone can be soft. If you know, you know.
The slack part is just long enough to a) keep the stone in my palm and b) let me play with it with my fingertips.
It has been my perpetual companion for the past month and I keep sending thanks to whatever inspired past-me to make it.

Non-exhaustive list of awesome Indonesian traditional headdresses/hair accessories (1/3)
1. Patham dhoi on the forehead with hairpins and prik-prik/ayun gumbak hanging near the ears from Aceh
2. Siger with kembang goyang (hairpins) and ronce melati (jasmines) of Sundanese people of West Java
3. Siger or Sigor from Lampung.
4. Da’a from North Kalimantan.
5. Headdresses of payas agung outfits from Bali.
6. Bridal headdress of Batak Karo people of North Sumatra.
7. Kasuomer of Asmat people of Papua
8. Panggal of Manggarai people of Flores, East Nusa Tenggara
9. Emas bulan and somalea of Tanimbar people of Southeast Maluku.
Click picture for better viewing. Further information of each picture is below.
1. Aceh. Multiple hair pins may be replaced by a single hairpin shaped like flower or star called culok ok. I believe the model in the picture only wore hair pins. Patham dhoi/dhoe is traditionally made of gold. All the gold jewelries (including multiple necklaces, earrings, bracelets, etc.) combined can weigh at least 3 kg. Some brides apparently pass out while wearing them! But, hey, gold!
2.  Sunda, West Java. Siger symbolizes that a bride will prioritize wisdom and respect in her marriage. Unlike siger in Lampung, siger in Sunda is made of nonprecious metal. On the back of her head there are actually some accessories called kembang tanjung. There are six of them to symbolize fidelity. Five hairpins face forward and two face backward to show a woman should look as beautiful as a flower whether from the front or the back. Jasmine means purity. Actually to keep things simple, whenever you see jasmine in Indonesian traditional outfits/accesories/etc. it symbolizes purity, ok.
3. Lampung. Siger is made of copper, brass, or other metals painted golden, although it used to be made of real gold and is worn on a daily basis (!!!). It represents honor and grace. Nine points in siger pepadun represent nine rivers in Lampung, though another source says that it represents nine Lampung clans that form Abung Siwo Megou. Five smaller three levels crown called seraja bulan is placed on top of the Siger. Seraja bulan are reminders of either five kingdoms in Lampung or five life philosophies. Siger is a feminine symbol that shows gentleness, hard work, independence, resilience, etc.
4.Da’a is a headband made of woven rattan or pandan leaves and decorated with hornbill feathers, tusks, claws, and/or beads. I can’t tell the specific tribe of the girl in the picture because there are about 100 sub-ethnicities of Dayak people. She’s maybe a Dayak Kenyah but I can’t be sure.
5. Bali. The outfits originated from Badung (today’s Denpasar). They’re worn by the highest caste (the royal families) during traditional ceremonies. The headdress for women consists of layers of golden hair accessories and the back of her head is covered with flowers, as you can seen in the picture below. For men, the headdress seems more complex with golden petitis over the forehead, tajung, flowers, and garuda mungkur. There are also payas madya for the middle caste and payas nista for the lowest caste.
Tumblr media
6. Batak Karo, North Sumatra. Batak Karo is one of the Batak sub-ethnicities. The headdress is made of black and red Uis Jungen-jungen or Beka Buluh woven fabric. The accessories at the front of the headdress are called sortali layang-layang and on either side of the headdress there is Padang Raja Muli or anting kodang-kodang.
7. Asmat, Papua. Kasuomer is made of woven sago leaves or roots and decorated with cassowary and/or bird of paradise feathers. I’m impressed they can get close enough to a cassowary to get its feathers tbh.
8. Manggarai, West Nusa Tenggara. Panggal is the headdress worn in Caci dance. It’s shaped like buffalo horns and it’s a symbol put at the roof of Manggarai traditional house. Panggal is made of buffalo hide and symbolizes the charisma and strength of Manggarai people. In the dance, beside as an accessory, it serves to protect the dancer’s face from whip (it’s a war dance slash traditional game. I don’t know how they conflate the two but here we are.)
9. Tanimbar, Southeast Maluku. Emas bulan is a crescent shaped (gold?) headdress on the forehead, while somalea is dried bird of paradise feathers… or a whole bird, I guess. Btw did you know that those birds are called bird of paradise in English because some explorer found them and asked native people where they live and the native people made up some BS about those birds living in paradise? That lie lasted centuries lol

dental hp carbide burs in dental laboratory application
Dental lab burs application in laboratory
Dental hp carbide burs cutting heads are made with high quality fine-grain tungsten carbide, which produces a blade that is sharper and wears longer compared to less expensive coarse grain tungsten carbide, which make the low speed dental burs works on dental lab model much more efficiently.
Dental lab burs blades made of fine grain tungsten carbide, retain shape even as they wear.Less expensive, large particle tungsten carbide dulls quickly as the large particles break from the blade or cutting edge. Many
dental carbide burs manufacturers use inexpensive tool steel for the carbide bur shank material. For shank construction, dentsma uses higher sturdy stainless steel, which resists corrosion during sterilization processes used in the dental office. The low speed dental burs carbide shank fit the international branded dental laboratory micro motor perfectly.
Dental lab polishing burs use in lab situations on plastics, ceramics, porcelain, plaster, acrylic,Coblat chrome alloy workpiece,Zironia restoration, stainless steel, etc.Dental lab burs are NOT for Intraoral use!

Collecting Costume Jewelry From the 1950s
As the expense of valuable metals and gems keep on rising the fame and cost of ensemble gems keeps on rising. Outfit adornments is produced from nonprecious metals that are plated all the while. Valuable metals, gold, silver, and platinum are rare and keep on expanding in cost check them out
The procedure of gold-plating was created by Nehemiah Dodge in his workshop in Providence, Rhode Island. As the gold-plating process with nonprecious metals was refined after some time, large scale manufacturing of ensemble adornments was currently conceivable. The significant focuses of generation included Newark, New Jersey; Attleboro, Massachusetts; Providence, Rhode Island, and New York. California turned into a noteworthy community for generation by the late 1930s.
The Great Depression brought about the decrease in the production of fine adornments. The fine gems creators looked for some kind of employment with the ensemble gems producers, along these lines bringing about an expansion in the quality and plan of the pieces. During World War II gems producers were given a rundown of metals that were never again permitted to be utilized the same number of metals were required for the war exertion. Outfit gems was then produced using an assortment of items including wood, plastics, and pasta.
Two occasions happened during the 1950s that emphatically affected the outfit adornments showcase. In 1955 and advertisement judge ruled ensemble gems was a "gem." With this decision, organizations started utilizing copyrighted images to ensure their pieces. Since organizations denoted their pieces it ended up simpler for gatherers to recognize the maker and the timeframe in which the piece was delivered.
The second occasion that happened mid 1950s was the improvement of an uncommon procedure which included covering rhinestones. The covering gave the rhinestones a glowing completion known as "aurora borealis."
Three Major Jewelry Designers of the 1950s
Eisenberg
Eisenberg Jewelry, Inc. was formally settled in 1940, fabricating outfit gems only. It had been creating ladies' dress from the mid 1900s. The gems was initially intended to co-ordinate with the ladies' dress line. In any case, the gems made by the Eisenberg Company was of such high caliber that buyers needed the gems as opposed to the dress for which it was planned to be worn. Eisenberg gems has a few markings, despite the fact that during the years 1958-1970 numerous pieces were not stamped. Somewhere in the range of 1949 and 1958, the gems was set apart with the words Eisenberg Ice in square letters.
Kramer
Kramer Jewelry Creations was an organization established during World War II and worked in New York. Pieces made right now were marked"Kramer," "Kramer N.Y.," or "Kramer of New York." In the 1950s Kramer was selected to plan and create outfit gems for Christian Dior. Pieces intended for Dior were marked"Christian Dior by Kramer," "Dior by Kramer," or "Kramer for Dior."
Most loved themes of Kramer adornments incorporate blooms, especially natural looking botanical plans made with hued finish or plated petals and leaves.
Napier
Napier wound up known for outfit gems during the 1920s. By the late 1940s and into the 1950s Napier was well known for its rose gold clasps and pieces of jewelry set with clear and shaded rhinestones, and strong structures for charms and wrist trinkets. Napier Company utilized the name "Napier" encased inside a square shape. Following the closeout of the Napier Company in 1999 the Napier trademark was written in content.
The Clothing-Jewelry Link
Women's' designs during the 1950s turned out to be increasingly female. Advances in textures enabled apparel to be worn without the need to press, giving ladies a clean crisp look. Gems took on another hope to compliment the new garments styles. The outfit gems made during this timeframe took on bigger extents. A few hoops were so enormous the press depicted them as "ear muffs." Large pearls and bloom themes were well known were substantial beaded rope pieces of jewelry, different stand arm ornaments, and mid length studs.
Synopsis
Outfit gems created during the 1950s was impacted by monetary and world occasions that restricted materials to deliver things and urged fine adornments planners to go to structuring ensemble gems. Not all outfit adornments is stamped or marked and even inside an organization there are periods where the pieces were checked and other timeframes the pieces were plain. Occasionally an organization would change the imprint.
Ensemble during this timespan is striking. Creature and botanical themes were prominent. Western themed adornments was likewise getting to be stylish as Roy Rogers and Gene Autry were pressing the cinemas.

Rare American Coins and Aluminum As a Precious Metal
The history of aluminum goes back to 1761 when it was first called alumina. Until 1884, aluminum products were extremely rare. In fact, most people considered aluminum a “precious metal” and it was more expensive than silver, gold, platinum, or any other precious metal used today. In the mid 1800’s, aluminum was considered more precious than gold, silver or platinum. For a while, aluminum bars were exhibited alongside the French crown jewels at the Exposition Universelle in1855. Napoleon Bonaparte is said to have used aluminum plates for his most honored guests at dinner. Scientists suspected that an unknown metal existed in alumina as early as 1787, but they did not have a way to extract it until 1825. Hans Christian Oersted, a Danish chemist, was the first to produce tiny amounts of aluminum. Two years later, Friedrich Wöhler, a German chemist, developed a different way to obtain the metal. By 1845, he was able to produce samples large enough to determine some of aluminum’s basic properties. Wöhler’s method was improved in 1854 by Henri Étienne Sainte-Claire Deville, a French chemist. Deville’s process allowed for the commercial production of aluminum. As a result, the price of the metal dropped from around $1200 per kilogram in 1852 to around $40 per kilogram in 1859. However, the metal still remained too expensive to be widely used. In 1884, only 125 pounds of aluminum were produced in the U.S. Aluminum is a very common metal, making up some 8% of the Earth’s crust. It reacts readily with oxygen, and is almost never found in nature in its pure state. In 1886, a Frenchman Paul Heroult and American Charles Martin Hall, working independently, figured out a way to extract aluminum from aluminum oxide. Then on April 2, 1889, Charles Martin Hall patented an inexpensive method for the production of aluminum, which brought the metal into wide commercial use. His method of processing the metal ore was to pass an electric current through a non-metallic conductor to separate the very conductive aluminum. In 1888, together with financier Alfred E. Hunt, Charles Martin Hall founded the company now known as the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA). Because the separation of aluminum from its ore is so electrically intensive, the commercial production of aluminum wasn’t practical until the production of cheap electricity also became practical. By 1891, more than 300 tons of aluminum was produced in the U.S. and it was used to make all kinds of products. At the start of the 1900s, the output of aluminum increased to about 8,000 tons. By 1914, Charles Martin Hall had brought the cost of aluminum down to 18 cents a pound, and it was no longer considered a precious metal. By 1999, 31 million tons of aluminum was being produced worldwide. Given the history of aluminum, could gold and silver ever become nonprecious metals? Even if someone discovered cheaper ways to process silver and gold, neither could be considered common elements, the way aluminum is. No rare American coins have been minted in aluminum the way they have in gold and silver. Even in the day when aluminum was considered precious, the US Mint never used it for coinage Current annual world silver production is 787,000,000 OUNCES, not tons. World gold production is around 80,000,000 OUNCES a year. Both American gold coins and American silver coins have compelling reasons to buy them. I buy both. I DON’T have any interest in aluminum coins though.
