In a world slightly to our left, the internet-at-large could have done for Ready Player One/Two what they did for Danny Phantom: leaned into the bizarre, horrifying, and creative sff concepts that were raised offhandedly once and never mentioned again, jettisoned all the stupid stuff the annoying creator thought was a Great Idea and was not, and played around in a sandbox of horrifying and fascinating sci-fi ideas, and made it our own. I would be on the front lines. I have so much Spite Fanfic Ideas in me.

Unfortunately this did not happen, probably because the Danny Phantom characters are endearing while the Ready Player One characters are insufferable, so it would have to center OCs who are actually affected by the nuclear war mentioned in one (1) sentence of backstory and then never again, or who are poor and trying to stretch their budgets and eat a lot of beans and ramen in the real world and then these asshole “philanthropists” think serving them VR gourmet meals solves this, or who have their brainscans unknowingly copied into the VR world so their brainscan AI copy self starts to become a person of their own separate from you, or who are struggling artists trying to make something new in a stagnating culture in the vice grip of a dead billionaire’s obsession with his own youth, or those Alpha Centauri babies, or…

we could do it though I believe in us. This is an unintentionally fascinating sci-fi world ripe for all sorts of Capitalism/VR Horror

Oh shit Cassandra Cain and Bao Pham working together would actually make for a hell of a story if you wrote it with respect for both characters’ perspectives. Cass is all about second chances and being able to change for the better, and also about stopping harm when people haven’t changed yet, while Bao’s post-Joker-pocalypse thing is not giving second chances to people who did harm, people who for all we know are just acting like nothing happened instead of trying to make up in any way for the damage they did.

Like this wouldn’t work as something were Clownhunter is already tracking someone down, and Cass intervenes to stop him. It needs to be them teamed up to work on a mutual goal, and getting into conflict over methods, while having so much fucking compassion for each other’s pasts.

Also snarking the hell out of each other, Bao in his small-font rambles and Cass in her minimum-words + sarcastic-actions.

physical media is getting kicked out the door and i hate it so much. it is so easy for online providers to take away the things you buy whether thats movies or music, it can be taken away. even if you pay for them, they can be taken. i miss getting physical tickets from the movies since half the time you get a receipt slip. i miss going to the store to rent dvd’s for the week and i miss the excitement of waiting for a movie to come out in theaters or dvd.

i want cd’s and dvd’s to not cost $20+ when it would’ve been $10 a decade ago. i would love to go to a concert, have a physical ticket, and not have to sell one of my organs to get that ticket. i’m only 23 so this was mostly my childhood, but i miss that i missed it. i have nostalgia for a time i was never in and it almost hurts how much i miss it.

i know it’s more convenient now but i miss the excitement of waiting and getting a solid copy of something and experiencing something for the first time.

People should really stop overcomplicating spirit work by making it sound like spirits have a whole different, special set of rules when in reality the best rule of thumb with spirit work is "if you wouldn't take it from another person, don't take it from a spirit." You're not going to go around telling people your boss is an evil cult leader just for bad business practices, so there's no point in labeling a spirit as "evil", "dangerous", or "malicious" when you'd call an incarnate being "an asshole" or "a creep" for the same behaviors.

Your language is inflienced by the subconscious, and your subconscious can be influenced by language in turn. Make sure you really, truly believe what you say about this sort of thing. Offer discarnate entities the same certainty of existence as you give to incarnate ones. If you wouldn't use the same word for a friend, coworker, parent, etc., don't use it for a spirit, god, landwight, house spirit, etc.

If a post, book, article, etc. is worth using, you should be able to replace any and all references to the metaphysical and supernatural with the mundane and physical. If a post says "spirit/entity/etc." you should still be able to comprehend it perfectly by substituting with "person/[person's title/how they know the individual]". You should be able to replace "spirit companions/SoulBonds" with "friends/family/partner/significant other". And you should be able to use any references to magic or energy as metaphors for someone's actions on a mundane level.

The way each cousin reacts to the abuse is an interesting look into the deeper ties of their family. George, the golden child and adult, takes the typical traditional Japanese approach and stays out of it. Jessica, who’s grown up in the main family and has been hit before, is clearly upset but can’t bring herself to step in. Battler, who’s spent 6 years away from the family living as a normal citizen steps in to stop the abuse but backs down when confronted by an angry Rosa, scared that the kind and gentle aunt he knew could be so terrifying. There’s also just the general Japanese belief that abuse is between the abuser and the abused, and not something that you should interfere with.

i also think it's a really useful microcosm of a lot of stuff. this horrible moment that shatters the joy and marks a clear end of the peaceful, good moments in this story. this mask off moment for rosa where we're treated firsthand to the cruelty of this family. the way that redundant social expectations choke the cousins until they act against their better nature. like honestly i feel confident in saying that even as early as i am the rosa and maria scene is one of the most crucial and defining moments in umineko.
