Nel quartiere dove sono nata e cresciuta, proprio in fondo alla via dove abitavo, subito svoltato l'angolo sulla destra, c'era Amelia. Amelia era un negozio per me magico, un vero e proprio emporio, dove si poteva incredibilmente trovare di tutto, nonostante le piccole, piccolissime dimensioni. Vado da Amelia, gridavo a mia madre scendendo le scale, quando avevo bisogno di materiale da cancelleria per la scuola, voglio provare da Amelia, diceva l'adulto di turno quando non riusciva a trovare ciò che cercava e Amelia, ovviamente, ce l'aveva. Sempre da Amelia ho iniziato a comprare i miei primi fumetti: topolino, geppo, nonna abelarda. Amelia era la signora che gestiva il negozio, ma quel negozio è rimasto per sempre Amelia, anche dopo che lei passò a miglior vita. Da Amelia compravo anche la bic multicolore. Era da un po' che ci pensavo a quella penna e a quei tempi, così sono entrata in una cartoleria e ne ho comprata una. Mi odio per non mettere al primo posto il benessere generale, per non pensare unicamente a chi vive situazioni angoscianti e si porterà dietro a lungo gli strascichi di questo lockdown. Eppure, qualcosa mi mancherà. Mi mancherà NON essere intrattenuta dai sofismi degli sconosciuti che si indignano per lo spazio occupato dal mio culo sui mezzi pubblici. Mi mancherà NON ricevere i commenti sagaci della cassiera sull'apporto di zuccheri superiore al socialmente accettato nella mia spesa (è una tabella in piccolo sulle etichette, ma vale solo per le persone con corpi grassi). Mi mancherà NON dovermi preoccupare del fatto che i negozi non abbiano assolutamente la mia taglia, o non abbiano solo vestiti pensati per nonna Abelarda nella collezione Fatebenefratelli del '65. Mi mancherà NON avere il terrore che qualcuno mi fotografi di nascosto ed esponga la mia immagine al pubblico ludibrio (un po' di onestà intellettuale: quanto fa schifo questa cosa?). Mi mancherà NON temere di rompere la sedia di vimini intrecciata da monaci trappisti del Guadalupe nel nuovissimo locale in centro, e passare due ore in squat cercando di bere a sufficienza per non sentire più il dolore. Mi mancherà NON incontrare persone che danno per scontato che la mia vita tracimi d'infelicità (e provano sempre un certo disappunto quando notano che me la passo piuttosto bene, perché i grassi felici no dai). Tutto questo mancherà. Perché la quarantena non è uguale per tutt*, ma neanche il mondo di prima lo era. Fat shaming, body shaming, diet culture, fat talk, microaggressioni, questa è la norma. E allora, perdonatemi, il "ritorno alla normalità" potremmo rivederlo insieme. Non posso pensare che un mondo al collasso, in isolamento, mangiato vivo dalla paura e dal dolore sia una versione del mondo in cui, finalmente, non ricevo più discriminazioni per il mio corpo. Non la voglio vivere la nostalgia di questo periodo, non voglio sentirmi una merda che non pensa ai ben più seri guai del cosmo. Today I want to talk about an italian Disney artist, who I think undeservedly got forgotten in the long decades that separates us from his death in 1969.

I'm talking about Luciano Capitanio.

Luciano Capitanio was born in Venice in 1934, he had a little studio in the Castello district, near the Arsenal, that he shared with his colleague Vladimiro Missaglia and where he drew comics mainly for Mondadori and Edizioni Bianconi.

He started his career in the early 50s by illustrating numerous stories with secondary characters for the publishing houses Alpe and Bianconi. In 1956 he illustrated his first story for Topolino (at the time published by Mondadori): Paperino e le macchie sospette written by Guido Martina.

It was in his studio that his little 12 years old cousin got fascinated by the comics industry and started helping him by inking some of his drawings. That little cousin's name was Giorgio Cavazzano.

Cavazzano was not the only artist who started their career in Capitanio's studio: Maurizio Amendola is another one and together with Luciano Gatto they are what I call the "Sestiere Castello Gang" 😁.

From 1956 to 1968 Capitanio illustrated about a hundred and fifty stories for Topolino, mostly by Guido Martina and Abramo Barosso. He also collaborated with Romano Scarpa as an inker (a figure Scarpa was always in need for) when, together with his peer Luciano Gatto, he replaced Cavazzano who had been called to army service.

Capitanio's style is very classical, much alike the one of Gatto and Perego and Bordini, though not as refined. His production was aimed more to the quantity than the quality: he needed to make as much money as possible to provide for his wife and two children one of which needed urgent surgeries.

About his artistic ability, Luciano Gatto said: "I saw him draw and I was struck by the ease with which he did it, it was much easier for him than for me."

He definetely improved over the years, especially when he got the chance to draw the more "modern" ducks of the late 60s.

Unfortunately, we will never know where his skills with a pencil would have lead him: just when his son made it through his last and final surgery, Luciano Capitanio suddenly passed away.

He was 35.

Rodolfo Cimino's Zio Paperone e l'influsso monetario is the last story he drew for Topolino. It was published posthumously in 1970 on Topolino #739.

I say for certain, was it not for his untimely death, we would talk now about Luciano Capitanio as one of the Maestri Disney.
