hm. i’m in a euripides class rn and thinking a lot about iphigenia in tauris/iphigenia among the taurians bc we’re reading it. it is So….. the human sacrifice. iphigenia talking about how she’s dead, standing before her brother, alive. the empty tomb. the hair motif (bloody hair in her dream, water sprinkled around a corpse’s hair for the body’s purification, the only thing in iphigenia’s tomb being a lock of hair). Hm. thinking about it.
#i don’t have any coherent thoughts yet.#but this play is making me want to gnaw on smth#rambles#also rlly interesting ending bcs it’s Not tragic? to me anyway#and also the interestingblike. threat of being greek in crimea / the barbarism of nongreek lands = human sacrifice#the VERY THING agamemnon tried to do to his daughter!!#and GOD i just like. iphigenia insisting she’s dead to the greeks / talking abt her death

i've been through the same broken & underfunded greek education system. most schools aren't that thorough in teaching much of anything, including ancient greek literature. frankly it's misleading to your nongreek followers to talk abt our contact with classics during mandatory education as if it's comparable to uni education on the field. remembering stuff you learned in class 10 years ago isn't formal education, it's scattered knowledge from your school years
I got this ask while surrounded by Greek friends of different educational backgrounds and jobs. (Theitsa goes out, what news!) So I asked them about their experiences. Not many remembered stuff from high school, or even liked the lessons. However, they all admitted the material was a lot, and their teachers "bloated their balls" with how much they insisted on analyzing things and learning grammar. One said their ancient Greek teacher pressed them so much that from ΓΕΛ they went to ΕΠΑΛ to avoid doing any mandatory ancient Greek-related lessons. They just couldn't stand more analysis of anything.
A few remembered (oddly xD) too much stuff, more than I did. (παιδια της θεωρητικης, βλεπεις) And because what I said about people having nightmares of all the ancient texts and the analyses they had to memorize in high school wasn't a lie.
Your knowledge also depends on how much you cared for these lessons in school and how much you remember from them. We are obviously on the Greek mythology side of Tumblr/internet right now so... people who are on this side paid attention. The Greek who is going to talk about Greek mythology has paid some attention and remembers stuff - and also reading new stuff. (If they say bs ofc they deserve to be called out, but they are most likely to know what they are talking about).
I never said high school education is the same to university education. I said it was formal education, too, often done by passionate teachers with PhDs. And that the things that we hear in our 16, the people who mythsplain our classics to us, hear them correctly for the first time at 20+ (and sometimes they don't even read the actual texts, and other times reading them is not even mandatory in their greek classics domain).
Do you dismiss the language and math knowledge we got in school as well because "it's scattered knowledge from your school years"? Are these lessons not the basics of larger studies we delve into more as we grow? Do you consider them of no value? They didn't set up any ground for how we think as people, and how we approach relative problems in the future?
Yes, our system is broken and underfunded. I had shitty teachers too, I was cold in winter, we had no nurses, no elevators, ceilings fell on our heads. But the material itself is competitive, especially about our own past.
In high school, we even compared what we learned (in math, for example) and how "behind" the middle and high schools of the US were in the same year. Richer schools don't necessarily produce "better" education. I know teachers and they tell me the material and the expectations by the Ministry of Education rise by the year. "how are the kids going to learn this stuff?" they wonder out loud.
I am of course advocating for funding schools! I am just saying that there are some great teachers there and they teach well in spite of the shitty system. (On average) Because Greeks, as people/culture, value quality education a lot)

Honestly this whole thing with nongreeks telling you, a greek person, things about greece is just ????? I can't believe how polite you're still being, I'd have lost my mind by this point. The American conceptualization of race is also just so damaging, and they can't understand that things aren't black-and-white? (No pun intended) i'm on the opposite spectrum, i'm a white looking WOC and can't stand Americans telling me that I'm white.
oh trust me, I’m close to losing my cool, but yeah you’re completely correct. It’s so annoying to have an American tell me about my own country, and yeah it goes for every race that people have a problem with, so I completely understand

you keep mentioning US Americans and non Greeks who are in the classics and their bad takes. I don't disagree that there are many bad takes out there, but you are disportionetly focused on them. this doesn't help the classics as a field of studies and as a science because by insisting that greeks know better than those in academia, you are erasing the voices of very good researchers and important people. some of your answers are simply reeking of anti-intellectualism. I agree we all have to check our biases and prejudices and this goes double in fact for greeks, since we've been fed propaganda by the spoon in our school years.
and let's just say you are completely right to hate on nongreeks the way you do, don't you think the climate you're creating here is also hurting greek classicists?
where are the Greek classicists in your blog? where are their experiences and opinions? where is the realistic depiction of this science in our own country? you keep complaining about nongreeks and yet what are you doing to uplift the voices of the ones you supposedly support?
I'm not saying only those with university level knowledge can talk about these stuff, but the way you use your blog and the way you answer and the way people look up to what you say... i would start being more mindful about it all
I have disagreed with Greeks many times in the past, it's just that I am naturally focused disproportionately on foreigners because Greeks are very few on Tumblr compared to US-Americans and other foreigners combined. So that is singlehandedly your answer to:
where are the Greek classicists in your blog? where are their experiences and opinions? where is the realistic depiction of this science in our own country? you keep complaining about nongreeks and yet what are you doing to uplift the voices of the ones you supposedly support?
I cannot force them to make a Tumblr account and interact with this blog. I don't have control over them sending a message. They are welcome to send anything of course but to be fair not many Greek Philologists are known for their strong online presence.
As for the
don't you think the climate you're creating here is also hurting greek classicists?
On the contrary, I think that keeping classicists accountable helps everyone. And, as you will see below, Greek "classicists" are not nearly as wild as the US-Americans. If anything, I believe they would stand with me against them xD (jump to the paragraph starting with "ALL THAT CONSIDERED" if you want to skip the rest)
Finally, I am a trashy/complaining blog, as my handle suggests. My focus from the time of the creation of this blog is to call out people, that's the nature of the blog. I add some education from time to time, and positive news, but I cannot cater to everyone all the time.
For people who are not familiar with our uni educational system, and wonder why they haven't ever seen a Greek person saying "I am a Classicist":
From what I know, the Greek university system doesn't have a Classics field exactly. We have Philology universities where one is exposed to different paths and the ancient Greek literature path is one of them. The graduates are called "Philologists" and their education is usually pretty good and holistic, either for Greece or for the Mediterranean. They are familiar with Greek culture, they see it as a legit culture, and they also study texts from all eras and see the continuity.
examples from undergraduate Greek philology departments (4 years) Aristoteleion, of Thessaloniki
Aegean University
University of Peloponnese: (sorry they don't have an English version but google translate is fine for Greek to English)
They can choose a field later (in their third here) focused more on the Classics (first bullet) but first for two years they do mandatory lessons on ancient, medieval, and modern Greek literature.
-- more about their courses (pdf file, Still in Greek)
University of Patras:
They have a very rich program in ancient texts, but still they study other eras as well. Antiquity for them, too, is not isolated.
There are some post-graduate programs where the students can focus on ancient literature more and sometimes they are called "Classic Philology" programs. One example is the university of Patras.
Greeks who graduate from this are still called Philologists, at least in Greek. For me, it was important to distinguish Greek programs from USian ones because of the differences in approach. And the fact that to take a "clear" Classics program in Greece (which again includes readings from other eras as well) you have to have a degree in the basic 4-year philology undergraduate program first.
ALL THAT CONSIDERED, Greek philologists very rarely make shit up about the myths, like "Zeus was an asshole, Odysseus was problematic" and so on. So in that particular domain ("Classics") there are almost no Greeks to argue with cause they uuusually got their shit together.
I also don't remember Greeks here starting their statements here with "I am a philologist". Maybe there aren't any around, or maybe they don't feel the need to say it. I answer all asks and there is no way a Greek with such a degree would send me something and I would leave it in my asks.
I am not "erasing any voices", I cannot find them here to begin with! But at the same time I am posting texts about our myths by Greek archaeologists, philologists and folklorists whenever I can, and have cited them in my posts.
It would make more sense for you, anon, to request I post more academic articles from Greeks than say I am "erasing people's opinions". I am not withholding information here, and I would gladly correct myself if a Greek or a non-Greek corrected me on it with reasonable arguments. (An unreasonable argument would be something like "Medusa is a girlboss" or "Persephone went to the Underworld on her own"). I agree there are biases from all sides and, as I often say, being a Greek does not make you an expert automatically.
-- Sometimes Tumblr eats up messages so if your ask has not been answered for a long time (aka, a month) please resend it. Or it might have been answered and you didn't find it because the asks I take are many and one ask may get lost on your feed. You can browse my #answered tag or in my search bar search a word or a phrase from your message and it will hopefully appear. (that's how I find older posts sometimes)
#soo I am still sick and it took me nearly an hour to write all this and find some links#i left this ask for when I was better and today i felt better#because it needed lots of effort soem time passed - a week? - before i answer this#answered#classics#greek education system
