Hairy, ahem “fluffy” and rocking and rolling to a good back scratch. Genetics has lead to this guy’s fluffiness (his health and diet are super monitored) this can limit food items as reinforcers, but as this clip shows back scratches are definitely appreciated! And have the potential to reinforce desired behavior too 😊#screaminghairyarmadillo #armadillo #backscratch #fluffynotfat #nonfoodreinforcers #secondaryreinforcers #ambassadoranimals https://www.instagram.com/p/BwrtJyyF2Tj/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=kmf2q35yl0rh

This is Ned. He is one of my favorite non-food reinforcer training stories. Hard to believe he wasn’t interested in food (being a guinea pig and all) but he was more of the “LL Cool J” of guinea pigs. As in ladies love cool Ned ...and in turn, he was all about the girls. This led to an interesting strategy to get a very (and I mean very) responsive training subject. (No, he did not get access to a lady guinea pig delivered as a reinforcer. I think we came up with an even more clever idea) Check out his story and other Creative Uses of Non Food Reinforcers in my new podcast Animal Training Fundamentals with Barbara Heidenreich. It was a wild crazy time last week visiting New Orleans during “almost” hurricane Barry. While riding out the storm at a friends place I got to practice using lots of tools in my training toolbox to build a relationship with their dog. He was showing some resource guarding and a bit of redirected aggression (towards me) mostly triggered by loud sounds. At first, I used food to frequently reinforce desired behavior under circumstances in which he wasn’t triggered. After building reinforcement history and gradually introducing triggering stimuli he was open and receptive to other types of reinforcers delivered from me (like neck massages, butt scratches and playing with toys.) The strategy was super successful. Instead of growling or the fish-eye, I was being greeted with butt wiggles or the perfect sit. My other achievement was to get my new animal training podcast launched! Topic number 1….Creative Uses of Non Food Reinforcers. Whooo says raptors only train for food? Here’s another gem from the “expand your list of reinforcers vault.” Oculus the spectacled owl is a fan of tactile. This means it can be delivered contingently for cooperation in activities such as stepping up and allowing jesses to be applied for participation in educational programming. Nice work from the team at @thesantaanazoo We then went on to train a new behavior I am presenting on at an upcoming conference. #owltraining #owlstepup #nonfoodreinforcers #spectacledowl #ambassadoranimaltraining #educationalanimaltraining #educationanimal #ambassadoranimal (at Santa Ana Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B8wM4WQHms6/?igshid=1tyic00ug1m3a

It seems fitting to share this video close to the holidays. In part because Fabian the Southern ground hornbill is holding a “gift” in his beak (of the mouse variety) and also because probably many people are dealing with the problem of animals who present undesired behavior when guests are in the house. Fabian has been known to be a bit underfoot when caregivers clean his enclosure. He finds it especially interesting when someone manipulates enrichment items. The simple solution seen here is to reinforce him for remaining on a station….any station. Because he is only interested in giving food away as a nuptial gift at the moment, he is getting head scratches as a reinforcer. The keeper delivers these periodically to teach him to stay on the rock for long duration while she attends to his habitat. The result is reinforcement for nice behavior instead of having to worry about a naughty hornbill .#southerngroundhornbill #hornbilltraining #birdtraining #stationingbehavior #stationtraining #aviarybirdtraining #santabarbarazoo #nonfoodreinforcers (at Santa Barbara Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Q6l62lnyG/?igshid=1athu1wkpze77

Sound on! Look at this gem I found buried on my phone. I’ve been on the non food reinforcer roll lately. This was from a hands on workshop in Las Vegas specifically for veterinary professionals learning to work with parrots. They were very lucky to work with a red tailed black cockatoo (a rarity in the US.)This male had no interest in food but loved attention from one man in particular in our group. In this clip you see us use access to the preferred human to lure the bird into a crate. I then encourage his favorite human to give him some extra attention for going into the crate. As I recall we also used attention from the preferred human to reinforce stepping onto perches and other people. Working with this bird at first seemed like an out of control situation because he just always wanted to go to his new crush. It quickly went to manageable once we started thinking about giving him what he really wanted for desired behavior. And we also were able to avoid coercion and focus on voluntary cooperation using desired attention. This video of a macaw learning to do a retrieve for the opportunity to rip up paper towels is a fan favorite. This was from a parrot training workshop I taught in Sweden. The bird was no longer interested in food and the owner was “keeping him busy” while I lectured, by letting him rip up paper towels. That simple observation was enough information to let me know we had a potential reinforcer in paper towels for this macaw. And as you can see, it worked! Do you remember this video? This was from a training session we were doing at Frank Buck Zoo with their Capybara’s. It went a tad bit viral 😉 We were working on station training. Initially we used food but we stuffed him about as full as he could get. However, this guy was hand raised and very receptive to scratches as many capys can be. We switched from food to intervals of scratching to reinforce waiting for duration on the station. I was on my way out for some fun and it was time to bring Blu Lu in from her outdoor aviary. Thought I would share the “new” reinforcer of choice for stepping up after I let her out her transport crate. It’s likely she views the can as a potential nest site, but since we just take a peek it doesn’t present other behavioral issues for her. I noticed her reaction to that area one day and took advantage of it as an opportunity to include it in my collection of reinforcers for her behaviors. Your animals body language is a good indicator of what they seek to acquire/engage with. If you can deliver it contingently it can potentially reinforce behavior. #reinforcers #nonfoodreinforcers #secondaryreinforcers #parrottraining #bluethroatedmacaw #macawtraining
