This not to be ignored 17 year old beauty is station trained and crate trained. She displayed when a pea fowl dared to get a little too close to her meal worm snacks. Small but mighty, this sun bittern is letting you know, she is here! Aviary bird training is trending and she is down for it. #sunbittern #subbitterndisplay #aviarybirds #aviarybirdtraining https://www.instagram.com/p/CrirxhMrhsM/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

It seems fitting to share this video close to the holidays. In part because Fabian the Southern ground hornbill is holding a “gift” in his beak (of the mouse variety) and also because probably many people are dealing with the problem of animals who present undesired behavior when guests are in the house. Fabian has been known to be a bit underfoot when caregivers clean his enclosure. He finds it especially interesting when someone manipulates enrichment items. The simple solution seen here is to reinforce him for remaining on a station….any station. Because he is only interested in giving food away as a nuptial gift at the moment, he is getting head scratches as a reinforcer. The keeper delivers these periodically to teach him to stay on the rock for long duration while she attends to his habitat. The result is reinforcement for nice behavior instead of having to worry about a naughty hornbill .#southerngroundhornbill #hornbilltraining #birdtraining #stationingbehavior #stationtraining #aviarybirdtraining #santabarbarazoo #nonfoodreinforcers (at Santa Barbara Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/B6Q6l62lnyG/?igshid=1athu1wkpze77

Aviary birds want to be trained too! 😊 These two blue throated macaws were sponges during our recent training sessions in Ireland. Not only had they already been working on stationing to allow servicing of the enclosure, and crate training, but we also worked on step up and recall. The team has plans for scale training, nail trim training, training for taking oral medications and more. And check out that classic macaw body language! Learn more about training parrots and other birds whether in the home or zoological facilities at the upcoming workshops in Warsaw Poland. Managing multiple animals? Reinforce one for waiting while you train the other. In this example, the female toucan has mastered waiting in the crate. The male (on the perch) is building confidence for stationing closer to people. Both birds have learned to orient towards their own target which can be moved to different perches to move birds around the enclosure. Eventually his target will be worked closer to the crate while the female stations. Nice work by Ashley at the Santa Barbara Zoo! #tocotoucan #toco #toucan #toucantraining #aviarybirdtraining #trainingmultipleanimals #birdtraining @ash__darling (at Santa Barbara Zoo) https://www.instagram.com/p/BrSkDQaFqX7/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=5boe4ks66yfm
