Norton Campbell Headcanon

Summery: a mysterious and enigmatic individual, whose inscrutable demeanor conceals a complex and intriguing past.

Note: *opens ask box* hello there! I didn’t have any Norton head-canons so far so this is the first one, hope you like it! Sorry for taking long dear.

It is very known that Norton in the eyes of others was always someone hard to deal with. Growing up in poverty surrounded by factories and polluted air, as well as losing his parents at a young age effected both his mentality and physical strength. It didn’t help either with how much little food he was getting…but it thankfully kept him alive enough much longer than he thought. Despite the hardships there is still a spark of determination within him that fills him with hope to escape such a miserable life.

Upon learning through life the harsh way he developed a deep resentment towards the wealthy and privileged, feeling like they had everything handed to them while he struggled to make ends meet. Despite his hardships, Norton possessed a sharp intellect and a strong work ethic, often taking in much longer times in the mines & pressing more pressure on himself.

It should be obvious that this man would develop a wall around him, due to how he would be treated by others. Trust is something Norton gave up on a long time ago. Ever since death took his father, the only man who held his trust and protection, away from him he learned the hard way to never rely on others other than himself.

You took notice of this of course, being the nurse that is. It was your job to note down each and every one of the men’s healths down. Though Norton was the most to stand out, given how he would always be the one to be brought to your office all beaten up and bruised. Thus how you’ve found yourself paying more attention to the scruffy man.

He was a stubborn one alright, either a miner or a guard had to drag him all the way to you simply cause he saw it as a sigh of weakness and refused to take acknowledge of his injuries just to get back to work.

You never thought about why he was this eager to get back to working in the mines, it was a hellish work alright yet he had always wanted to keep working more and longer than the others. No one really understood why he would go this far or what his goal was but, either way they simply shrugged it off.

Here you are again as you find yourself sitting in front of Norton, quiet and intimidating as he can be, as he sits on the bed, his cold eyes fixed on you without a word. Making you slightly nervous; His taller frame doesn’t help either, he may be slender but his body almost towering over you says otherwise.

The room is filled with the sound of your gentle movements as you tend to his injuries. You clean his face, hands, and arms tenderly, holding back from running your fingers on the scar surrounding his eye. Your touch a stark contrast to his tough exterior.

Norton's silence is heavy in the air, but you've grown accustomed to it. You know that beneath his gruff exterior lies a man who has seen too much hardship in the mines. His injuries, a result of the harsh conditions he faces daily, speak volumes about the dangers of his profession.

As you carefully tend to his wounds, you can't help but wonder about the story behind each scar and bruise. You've heard whispers from the other miners about Norton's solitary nature and the frequent injuries he sustains. Despite his reluctance to seek help, you can see a glimmer of gratitude in his eyes as you work to ease his pain.

He may seem rough yet….you know he isn’t one of the nasty men that would eye you up knowing the unpleasant thoughts that lie within their corrupted minds. He’s got a certain….charm to him, and denying the fact that he himself is quite a handsome man would be a lie.

All he does really is play with a strand of your hair or fiddle with your skirt, to pass the time whenever you’re taking care of him. It surprised you at first yet it was a small sigh of him putting his guard down whenever your around.

It’s really cute actually….and it made you warm inside…

Despite the distrust that lie in his eyes, Norton never really mistreated you nor physically or verbally. All there was, silence and a small nod he’d give you whenever you’d finish healing him up.

Which led you to always secretly make him a warm healthy meal, that would fill him up. It did bring up suspicion on his side but he never refused the offer and found himself digging in realising the desperate hunger that he lived throughout his life, melting at each bite he would take.

In this quiet moment, you find yourself wishing to break through his tough exterior, to offer him the comfort and solace he so clearly needs. You continue your ministrations with care, hoping that your presence brings him some measure of relief, if only for a brief moment in the harsh world of the mines.

As you finish cleaning Norton's wounds, you carefully wrap them up, ensuring that they are protected and will heal properly. You then prepare his medication for the day, knowing that he needs it to manage the pain from his lungs. Thankfully reducing the constant coughing he suffers from. As you hand him the medication, he meets your gaze for a moment, and you catch a hint of something softer in his eyes, a fleeting expression that speaks volumes.

In that brief exchange, you sense a silent gratitude from Norton, a recognition of the care and attention you've devoted to his well-being. Despite his stoic demeanor, you can tell that he appreciates your efforts, even if he struggles to express it in words. You understand that for a man like Norton, actions speak louder than any conversation could.

You watch him take the medication, his movements are measured and deliberate, a reflection of the resilience he carries within him. Giving him a sweet smile you can't help but admire his strength, both physical and emotional, as he endures the harshness of his work with a quiet determination.

Your presence and care have made a difference, however small, in Norton's life. You may not be able to erase the pain and challenges he faces in the mines, but you can offer him a moment of respite, a touch of compassion in a harsh world.

-i went into this episode with some spoilers cause i couldn’t listen to the ep until late in the evening, and couldn’t help myself when it came to browsing tumblr

those were: oscar’s letter being illegible ( not too surprised about that one, given the constant rain, the mud, the blood loss, and the swimming/wading through bodies of water. i’d have been shocked if it survived)

arthur lester crashes out (again)

arthur and john reunited with the dearly beloved and missed cast member: “falling in holes”

and arthur uses All Of The Bullets

this turned the episode into a fun mystery game for me (on top of the in-episode murder mystery), trying to figure out when these things would occur

anyway onto the actual episode

- we saw it a lot last episode but i looooove seeing how much john is stepping up and pulling extra weight for arthur while he’s unwell. it’s sooo different from the dysfunctional dynamic they had when dealing with other people during season 4.

i’ll never get tired of seeing the contrast against past events of how far the boys have come and changed

-arthur sure is doing. Really! Bad! uh oh!

-despite that he still gets some great great spotlight of his people skills, dealing with the suspicious and unpredictable castle gang, and the one-on-one intimidation with the friar

-the friar in fact, did not do it, as i thought, but the lord everard reveal is way more interesting so i like this outcome

-something about benevolent christmas special referencing the falling in holes thing, and a new incident of Arthur and John Fall in a Hole being in an episode that released on christmas day is very funny to me, even though i know the part of the episode featuring Falling in a Hole most likely released a couple weeks ago

- arthur giving up because he doesn’t believe that on a fundamental, physical level he’s capable of pushing on and surviving is so heartbreaking to listen to.

despite knowing this is Malevolent, i somehow wasn’t expecting to get emotional this episode!

i got lulled into a false sense of security by the previous episodes (which were pretty chill, compared to the standard), even though i knew they were luring me into a false sense of security

- john reciting Invictus to arthur is so ougggh aggghh oof ouch my heart, i loved it. but also it makes me crazy and i can’t stop thinking about it because

when arthur has referenced pieces of Invictus in the past, john didn’t recognize it.

since john has picked up knowledge of human experiences and poetry from arthur, in some sort of bleed-over of knowledge due to their shared state of being, we can assume that Invictus is not among that selection that bled over.

when john asks about it, arthur specifically says it’s “not for you”, keeping a poem that’s so meaningful to him close to his chest.

it makes sense, this was during the prison pits, and the last thing that arthur shared that was important to him, was wielded against him, painfully.

arthur does recite Invictus to yellow, but he was drunk/poisoned, and given the way he brushes off questions the next day, i assume he wouldn’t have freely recited it had he had all of his faculties about him.

but now, after all that’s happened, how arthur and john’s relationship has changed so drastically from the way it was in the dreamlands.

now john has been able to pick up the poem, accumulated as part of the bleed-over knowledge. i don’t think there’s any conscious control on the part of either party when it comes to what knowledge is shared with john, but it feels significant that Now he has access to it, after all this time.

and what he does with it, is he uses it to raise arthur up. to support and try and encourage arthur to push on. head bloodied, but unbowed.

these two make me so crazy it’s insane!!!!!!!

- anyways, because i’m also crazy about kayne, when john mentioned the coin, and then a voice that i didn’t immediately realize was everard spoke, i did very briefly freak out going “omg kayne??? kayne??? kayne???” before coming to my senses.

- also it’s delightful that the boys found an ally here?? i really wasn’t expecting that honestly, after season four, given the circumstances they were placed into, i thought this season would be a return to form of the pair having no one they can safely trust, other than themselves. very neat to be proven wrong!

and it’s a very delightful way to twist it that ultimately they can’t rely upon/work with this ally in the end, because they’re stuck working for one of those very “dark forces” that everard is working against.

- YAY WAHOO for arthur getting healed from his sickness, but i am very curious about how the next episode will go, given that it’s “not simple” and “will take some time”.

it’s possible there will be a short time skip, but i feel like an episode about curing a magical sickness and ridding arthur of horrig’s influence, has potential to be another character development bottle episode of sorts, like The Nightmare.

also can alia detect john?? will she be able to detect john when healing arthur??

what if she deems john as some “dark force” that arthur needs healed from as well

or what if she deems john is Not a “dark force” (that one would make me cry)

i can’t wait for the next ep

The Chocolate Scale, A Citrus Scale For Dark Characterization

If you've been in fandom spaces for any significant amount of time, then you probably have heard about the citrus scale in passing. Or more accurately, you probably know about the infamous lemons. When we talk about "old fandom" one of the first things people tend to think about are lemons. However, lemons were actually one piece of a four part scale used to indicate how nsfw a fic got. Most people only know about lemons (and a select few might be familiar with limes), but as mentioned it was part of a four point scale. This scale consisted of orange, lime, lemon, and finally grapefruit.

Tagging was nowhere near as effective in the days of ye old fandom, so the citrus scale as a quick and easy way of communicating to readers the nature of your fic. It also served a dual purpose of protecting the author in a time when adult content was being pushed out of fandom spaces (and arguably it still is). The citrus scale was really useful though, because it set the expectations of the readers ahead of time.

Recently we've seen the emergence of dark characterization. In the MCYT spaces for example we've seen the emergence of Dark SBI. Fics like these are fun to play with as they allow authors to explore heavier themes and unique settings. But much like with early day nsfw, you never quite know what you're getting into when you click on a fic with dark characterization. There's a scale of just how "dark" things get, and it isn't always easily communicated when you first glance at the tags. So we here at UYF created sometime to help us when we discus fics and we'd like to share it with all of you, The Chocolate Scale!

White Chocolate

White chocolate is the lightest end of the spectrum to a degree it almost doesn't count as dark characterization. Maybe it's just one or two unhealthy character traits that make you quirk an eyebrow, but otherwise you wouldn't ask too many questions. Fics that have "dark (insert character) except not really" usually fall somewhere between this and milk chocolate. White chocolate fics make for a really good starting point though, as they begin to establish some of the consistent running themes found in dark characterization without throwing you in the deep end.

Milk Chocolate

Arguably the most common form of dark characterization, milk chocolate in some senses could be considered the standard. The character might act in way that are questionable but ultimately they're still able to forge healthy relationships with other characters by the end of the fic. You can find a lot of good examples under the vampire or fae tags since often the moral of these characters don't line up with typical human morals. One of the most common traits you'll see in a milk chocolate fic is possessiveness. Occasionally you'll see some works start to veer towards the heavier end of things, such as fics where one character is turned into a vampire without consent a la forced adoption, but overall the content doesn't raise too many ethical questions long term.

Dark Chocolate

This is where you start getting the actual dark characterization. Dark chocolate is characterized by the fact that more often than not this relationship isn't going to be healthy. Possessiveness and control issues go hand in hand with dark chocolate. Most of these fics will have an underlying sense of psychological manipulation and endings might be bittersweet depending on whether the nondark character is able to escape the dark characters or not. That being said, there's still room for a happy ending even if the characters still end up together. Sometimes the dark characters learn how to tone it down and slip into the milk chocolate range. Sometimes (even if it's not quite healthy), the nondark character learns to love the dark character regardless. These fics aren't meant to be healthy though, they're meant to be fantasy.

Bakers Chocolate

You ever try bakers chocolate before? It is easily one of the most disgusting things I've ever tried in my life. It's made worse by the fact it's supposed to be chocolate. It is bitter and uncomfortable where it's supposed to be sweet and that's what make it all the worse. It feels like a betrayal. Bakers chocolate characterizations follow a similar theme. While dark chocolate might try to make itself subtle, bakers chocolate is upfront with the fact that the relationships found between characters are probably abuse. It's written with the intention of being an assault to the senses, and more often than not the bakers chocolate characters are cast as villains. The nondark character either gets away from them or there is no happy ending.

Characterization vs. Plot

Keep in mind that the chocolate scale is for dark characterization, not over all plot points. A perfect example of this is Oh, These Blood Stained Hands of Mine by deathcapshrew. The first chapter is a nightmare. Your first assumption is that Dream is going to be a milk chocolate character if not an outright dark chocolate character. But he's not. The tags might express darker themes, but in terms of characterization, we can see how much the situation is one that he's not especially happy with. Sometimes it can be hard to tell where one stops and the other begins, but when using the chocolate scale it's important to understand the difference between the fic as a whole and it's tags vs the characterization of specific individuals.
