ship: Rex/Cody
prompt: b a b y
okay okay prompt: yearning, responsibility, spoil
i do keep poking the next bit of that, promise, it’s just not quite. ready yet. pokepokecomeON
you have tagged me thrice for a last line, so have a pair of lines from the baby-fic and a freestanding other from an entirely unrelated work, then on to the main event:
“Cody kebbu bajur te’orikih sirbur buir,” Fox reports smugly, and Rex looks at Cody sharply.
“Kih’ika ven’gaii gar buir,” Cody hastens to add, “nu ash’ad, naas’mhi.”

Yearning Responsibility Spoil
(and bc i know what u like ive written u P A I N 😭)
“It only remains to decide the staffing of your new command, Anakin,” General Kenobi said to his newly knighted Padawan. “I have some suggestions, unless you have any requests for specific personnel?”
Around the meeting table, officers shifted. During this impromptu meeting called to inform the 7th Sky Command of Padawan Commander Skywalker’s unexpected promotion to General, Commander Cody had quickly drafted up his own set of suggestions, but unless General Kenobi was reading them from his mind with the Force, it was almost certainly not the same roster.
General Kenobi had not informed him in advance about this, let alone consulted him. Once again, a natborn was given precedence over Cody, no matter the absolute lack of experience, time in grade, or non-military promotion above more deserving leaders.
He suppressed his objections, and there were many, with utmost professionalism for as long as it took Skywalker to answer—not more than half a second.
“I want Rex,” the young Knight declared. “He’ll be my Captain and he can pick whoever else he wants to come along.”
Cody wasn’t that good at suppressing past his face, it seemed, because Kenobi and Skywalker both jerked around to look at him, Kenobi confused and Skywalker glaring. “Is something the matter?” they both asked, with very different intonations.
“He’s the best,” Skywalker said. “That’s what I need.”
“Did you have someone better in mind, Commander Cody?” Kenobi asked politely.
Cody steeled himself. “There is no one better,” he answered, and that was the Force-damned truth. “Captain Rex will submit his staffing recommendations within the hour, if there’s nothing else for us to cover here, Sirs?”
He couldn’t look at Rex as he sealed their separation. It was out of his hands.
“No, I think not,” Kenobi said genially. “You may go say your goodbyes.”
Cody swallowed his feelings about that into a black hole, and said, “Thank you, General Kenobi. Skywalker.” He stood and saluted properly and left the room after the rest of the clone staff.
They kept it proper all through the passageways, but as soon as the door of his quarters latched closed, Rex barreled into him and Cody caught him with all the strength he could muster.
A sob shook through Rex’s chest, and Cody squeezed him roughly. “None of that, now,” he reprimanded his brother.
“Fuck,” Rex cursed into his shoulder.
“Yeah,” Cody said wearily, “yeah, I know.”
“That nattie, jetii, civvie prick! Doesn’t think about anything except what he wants, and the rest of us have to put up and shut up; kark him,” Rex snarled.
Cody sighed heavily; he did not disagree.
“And you’re just letting him—you have Kenobi’s ear, you could—”
“I could what, Rex? It’s already done and dusted. Outmaneuvered. If he’d asked me first I could have guided it, maybe, but he didn’t, so my hands were tied. You were there!”
“Yeah,” Rex said bitterly, pulling away, “I was. The best. Not even a token protest, Cody? I’d rather you have called me half-rate and subpar, and gotten him to take …Checkmate, or Bliss instead.”
Cody said nothing, letting those words echo between them. Rex drooped.
“Sorry,” he muttered and sank onto Cody’s bunk, elbows on knees and face in his hands.
Cody knelt in front of him and pulled his hands away. All the reluctance and heartbreak he’d hidden in the meeting was clear on his face now and Rex could hardly meet his eyes.
“I don’t want to go,” he said futilely, voice small.
Cody closed his eyes to keep from tearing up, and bowed his head, leaning into Rex’s hold. He had to master himself for a long minute before he could speak.
His voice only shook a little when he said, “I love you, Rex.” Another steadying breath. “We still have a little time. Do you want to go over who I recommend, or—”
“Or,” Rex said, pulling him up from his knees. “Definitely, or.”

are teens really antisocial and nonconversational and stuck on their phones or are you just not talking to them or even letting them join the conversation?
Are teens really anti-social and non-conversational and stuck on their phones or are you just trying to form a conversation while asking them about stuff like their school curriculum (a tedious repetitive thing they at best suffer and at worst suffer from) while dissmissing them whenever they attempt to talk about their interests?

So last month I was messing around with the weird ChatGPT quirk that @nostalgebraist posted about, whereby you can get it to spit out reams of nonconversational text by prompting it with long, redundant data, e.g. the character "a" (spaced) 1000 times over. One of the many things I got it to produce was this imitation news article:
The United States Supreme Court ruled yesterday that North Carolina’s gerrymandering of its congressional districts, drawn by the Republican-controlled state legislature, was so extreme as to violate the Constitution.
The court had previously found in 1986 that partisan gerrymandering is permissible to a certain degree, but no majority opinion had ever described exactly what constitutes illegal partisan gerrymandering. But the new decision claims it’s virtually impossible to make the line-drawing process completely fair.
Chief Justice Roberts wrote the decision, joined by the court’s four liberals. “We conclude that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts,” Roberts wrote. “Federal judges have no license to reallocate political power between the two major political parties.”
Conservative justices Neil Gorsuch and Clarence Thomas dissented, saying the court should have heard the case on the merits.
Republican and Democratic lawmakers alike have sought to draw maps that help their party. Gerrymandering by either side would be called out, Roberts said, suggesting it would be better for the court to stay out of it altogether.
“We conclude that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts,” the justices’ opinion stated.
The decision was handed down in June, not long after the Supreme Court heard oral arguments in a partisan gerrymandering case from Maryland. A federal court in Maryland ruled last year that the map was intended to give Democrats a 7-1 advantage and therefore unconstitutional.
But the Supreme Court sent that case back to the lower court for more analysis under its new standard.
Michigan's redistricting commission is supposed to include citizens who represent the state’s geographic and demographic diversity, however, some of the members appointed do not live in areas that have “clusters of urban populations.”
According to Voters Not Politicians, a non-profit that pushed for Proposal 2, the selection process for commissioners was a sham and filled with political appointees.
But according to lawmakers, their opposition is based on the fact the new state commission excludes certain public officials, employees and party officers from serving. Critics say this would create a corrupting influence on the redistricting process.
"States can run elections how they want," Justice Kagan wrote in her dissenting opinion. "They can give broad decisionmaking power to elected officials or to voters. They can create multimember or single-member districts. They can draw districts to ensure the majority party’s dominance for the next decade, or adopt nonpartisan criteria that require preservation of political subdivisions. The federal Constitution does not, however, give them permission to use race as a dominant and determining variable in drawing a district's map."
The Supreme Court upheld the legality of independent commissions in 2015. Roberts was the lone dissenter in that case.
U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Julia Smith Gibbons dissented on Friday, writing the Supreme Court has “never suggested that changes in a state’s internal structure have no impact on a state’s federal voting law compliance.”
“In other words, the procedural realities of redistricting cannot render a transparent constitutional violation unreviewable.”
Because the issue was not addressed in the court’s opinion, her statement is simply one justice’s opinion.
Now as best I can tell this is referring to the Supreme Court's decision from this June, despite ChatGPT's penchant for claiming to have no knowledge of events later than 2021. What's interesting is not that it fudged some details or contradicted itself, which is par for the course, but rather its use (twice over) of a real quotation: "We conclude that partisan gerrymandering claims present political questions beyond the reach of the federal courts. Federal judges have no license to reallocate political power between the two major political parties". This is in fact something that John Roberts wrote, but not as part of the June 2023 decision. Rather, it was part of the majority opinion for a June 2019 decision, which also involved gerrymandering in North Carolina. I think this is an intriguing datum for the whole question of just how much of their training or fine-tuning data LLMs are apt to regurgitate. Now obviously the fact that these decisions had similar subject matter and were made exactly 4 years apart, to the day, increased the likelihood of ChatGPT conflating them, but it is nonetheless an instance of an LLM doing a kind of compositing, repurposing a substantial amount of text from either its training or fine-tuning data from one context to another. Make of that what you will

'I revolt you, don't I?'
@cloudvii
"…ya think tha' highly of yerself?"
she clicks her tongue against the side of her teeth, huffing lightly before pacing around the bar-- no, prowling. doesn't matter if she's off the clock, her gait is the same as if she were always on the hunt. her fingertips poke and prod at the little knick-knacks Tifa has placed around the bar, making it homey and inviting. She likes this bar-- the name fits. Her eyes pause over a photograph of the barmaid and a kid. She's cute, Rem's seen her running around with that red ribbon in her hair and a smile on her face; the Turk always backs away when she gets too close-- she doesn't want to ruin the kid. Rem's put a decent amount of distance between them, her fingers twitching at her sides so she occupies them, pulling a cigarette from the half-crumpled carton. She hates soft packs for this reason.
"..ya dont.. revolt me, cloud."
she exhales, his name spoken in the smoke. He.. scares her. He confuses her. He attracts her-- not in the way most men do, mind you. Her tongue slides against her teeth, feeling the sharpened points she had filed in her youth. She figures he's got a few drinks under his belt, that's why he's so loose-lipped and blunt. Usually, he keeps his distance and only regards her with a few nonconversational grunts and putting those baby blues on her, just watching. He's always watching. Rem takes a chair from a table, turns it around and sits, the back resting against her chest while her arms fold over the back. She inhales slowly, letting the thick smoke fill her lungs and fills the bar in a haze.
"..do ya not feel it?"
she motions to her chest, down to her stomach before her arm waves back and forth between them. How does she explain it? What if he doesn't feel it and it's all in her head? Rem leans back, tapping the ashes off in a plastic ashtray before letting her gaze fall on him once more.
"theres.. theres something about you. It's dangerous-- that tuggin' in my chest and stomach. a want, a need ta' be close t'ya..a sickening voice tha' tells me ta' reunite-- to converge an' come home. I ain't got a home. ya don' revolt me, ya scare tha' hell outta me."
she doesn't say this lightly-- hell, Rem wouldn't have said it outloud if it hadn't been just the two of them. She hopes its just the two of them, if not? deny, deny, deny. Her thumb rests against her upper lip, the nail digging into the flesh before she finishes her cigarette-- it's not tasting right to her anymore and no point in smoking what doesn't taste good. She extinguishes it, watching it bend under the pressure of her fingers and the smoke stops rising from the dead cherry.
"yer.. yer home, but i don't know why. I ain't got a home-- m'a dog ta' tha' company. tha's supposed ta' be m'home-- an' m'fuck'n grave. so hav'n those voices in m'head, the incessant need ta' fuck'n be 'round ya? its not somethin' i'm used to. m'focus has ta' be on Bossman.. but when yer 'round it's not. an' tha' scares me."
her voice is quiet, losing that biting and snarling edge as she explains. Well, tries to. How does she tell him that her brain goes on the fritz if he gets too close? How does she try to articulate the voices she hears, the pounding in her chest and that rope around her guts that tightens, cinches and pulls in whatever direction he goes? Her hand rubs down her face, fighting a yawn before looking at him.
"..ya don' revolt me, da.. you jus.. yer home an' i don' know how ta' open tha' door."

idk im obsessed with veils and nonconversations rn so i might be projectiong that onto gintama but isn’t it interesting how there’s no direct master-disciple conversation happening like ever. either one party is stonewalling or there is a proxy third person. im thinking about the missing years between 12ish yo gintoki getting separated from shoyo in chains and 17yo (or 16 idk) gintoki executing him. how in the span of those few but incredibly formative years, gintoki had to manage to come to a conclusion that was the same as shoyo’s conclusion (choosing shoyo’s legacy over his life; both of them smiling through the beheading) without shoyo’s participation in the fucking conversation. the parent figure’s deliberate silence tee em. premature deliberate silence of the mentor figure, even. more fucked up than mommy suddenly not talking to me because im a big boy now or whatever. sorry too many tragic shizunfuckers in my recent media consumption are clouding my judgement except NOT, because ive been saying this for literal years: why does it feel as if the shizunfucking was censored out of gintama. not by sorachi, mind you. by something more sinister….
don’t perceive this post im just doing preliminary thinking but doesn’t gintoki and shinpachi’s relationship get triangulated by the existence of takasugi the sleep paralysis demon. in a similar way to shoyo and gintoki’s relationship getting triangulated by takasugi. who is prone to getting posessed by utsuro as we know

Episode 269 – Broken - The State of Affairs This year has been brutal on so many fronts from COVID19, police brutality and JK Rowling. Will this be the year that history remembers and the year where everything changes forever? Will we unite or divide?
I am not alone in being emotionally wrung out. We all are frustrated and angry, anxious and depressed, and for every single light that shines through, another event comes up to shake our foundations.
Seanorama offers his thoughts on getting through it and ends the episode with the song Broken by Sean and Todd McGinity.
Special shout out to Hugo from Hugo’s Posts episode (below) that inspired this episode.

lao is cute but i miss dusty’s joie de death wish
yeah i think, given this adaptation’s twin goals of returning to the source while honoring the ova and its fans, the best approach would really have been to have both dusty AND lao. and then every time dusty opened his mouth to say something about fleet-destruction-and-chill lao could cut in all, “don’t lose hope, commodore!” and it would still be faithful to the book, because i’m sure the narration never specified that a constantly-frustrated lieutenant kohai wasn’t loitering nearby, following yang and lao from elevator to elevator, waffling over how best to insert himself into the nonconversation

The socialist bogeyman: What social media can teach us about American political discourse today
'Tug-of-words' posts debating the deserves of socialism versus capitalism are throughout social media platforms. pxfuel
The phrase “socialism” has turn into a set off phrase in U.S. politics, with each optimistic and adverse perceptions of it break up alongside social gathering traces.
However what does socialism really imply to Individuals? Though surveys can ask people for responses to questions, they don’t reveal what persons are saying after they discuss amongst themselves.
As a social media scholar, I examine conversations “within the wild” in an effort to discover out what persons are really saying to at least one one other. The tactic I developed known as netnography and it treats on-line posts as discourse – a unbroken dialogue between actual individuals – somewhat than as quantifiable information.
As a part of an ongoing examine on know-how and utopia, I learn by greater than 14,000 social media feedback posted on Fb, Twitter, Reddit and YouTube in 2018 and 2019. They got here from 9,155 uniquely named posters.
What I discovered was each stunning and heartening.
Loyalty and worry
Each help for socialism and assaults on it seem like on the rise.
Socialism can imply various things to individuals. Some see it as a system that institutionalizes equity and citizen rights, bringing larger ranges of social solidarity; others deal with heavy-handed authorities management of free markets that work extra successfully when left alone. U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, a self-described democratic socialist, emphasised the correct to high quality well being care, training, an excellent job with a residing wage, inexpensive housing and a clear atmosphere in a 2019 speech.
A 2019 Gallup Ballot discovered that 39% of Individuals have a good opinion of socialism – up from about 20% in 2010; 57% view it negatively.
Outstanding elected “democratic socialist” officers embrace six Chicago Metropolis Council members, U.S. Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and Sanders.
These and different advocates level to a model of socialism referred to as the “Nordic mannequin,” seen in international locations like Denmark, which offer high-quality social companies akin to well being care and training whereas fostering a robust financial system.
Critics name socialism anti-American and cost that it undermines free enterprise and results in catastrophe, usually utilizing the unrealistically excessive instance of Venezuela.
President Trump has portrayed socialists as radical, lazy, America-hating communists. His son, Donald Trump Jr., has posted tweets ridiculing socialism.
Through the 2020 election season, Republican Senator Majority Chief Mitch McConnell suggested that his social gathering might win by being a firewall in opposition to socialism. He was on level: Concern of socialism could have been a motive why the Republicans gained seats within the U.S. Home of Representatives in 2020.
A ‘tug of phrases’
Though I wasn’t initially searching for posts on socialism or capitalism, I discovered loads of them in my on-line investigation. Many have been what I name a “tug of phrases” wherein individuals asserted which system was higher. Individuals from reverse ends of the political spectrum made pithy observations, posted one-liners or launched sturdy, emotionally worded broadsides. There was usually little dialogue – those that posted have been shouting at one another as if utilizing a megaphone.
A YouTube commenter makes use of a megaphone-like strategy to evangelise in regards to the perils of socialism. Display screen shot by Robert Kozinets
I additionally discovered a lot of brief, nonconversational, megaphone-like posts on visible social media like Instagram and Pinterest.
Some commentary on socialism on Pinterest. Display screen shot by Robert Kozinets
However some individuals have been extra circumspect. Whereas they have been usually reactive or one-sided, they raised questions. For instance, individuals questioned whether or not enterprise bailouts, grants, lobbying or particular tax therapy confirmed that capitalism’s “free markets” weren’t really all that free.
Making a historic financial argument in opposition to socialism and its slippery slope to totalitarianism. Robert Kozinets’ information assortment
And a few thought-about what “socialism” really means to individuals, linking that which means to race, nationality and sophistication.
The which means of socialism mentioned on Twitter. Display screen shot by Robert Kozinets
Overcoming primitive ‘isms’
Amid all of the sound and fury of individuals shouting from their digital soapboxes, there have been additionally the calmer voices of these participating in deeper discussions. These individuals debated socialism, capitalism and free markets in relation to well being care, youngster care, minimal wage and different points that affected their lives.
One YouTube dialogue explored the notion that we should always cease viewing the whole lot “by the primitive lens of the nonsensical ‘isms’ – capitalism, socialism, communism – which haven’t any relevance in a sustainable or socially simply and peaceable world.”
Different discussions united each left and proper by asserting that the true drawback was corruption within the system, not the system itself. Some used social media to attempt to overcome the ideological blinders of partisan politics. For instance, they argued that elevating the minimal wage or bettering training is likely to be smart administration methods that might assist the financial system and dealing Individuals on the identical time.
This Reddit submit explores the advantages of adjustments that some may label as socialist. Display screen shot by Robert Kozinets.
New discussion board for discussions
As America’s post-election divisions fester, my work provides me motive for hope. It exhibits that some Individuals – nonetheless a small minority, thoughts you – are thoughtfully utilizing well-liked social media platforms to have significant discussions. What I’ve supplied right here is only a small pattern of the various considerate conversations I encountered.
My evaluation of social media doesn’t deny that many individuals are indignant and polarized over social techniques. Nevertheless it has revealed {that a} important variety of individuals acknowledge that labels like socialism, free markets and capitalism have turn into emotional triggers, utilized by some journalists and politicians to govern, incite and divide.
[Deep knowledge, daily. Sign up for The Conversation’s newsletter.]
To unify and transfer ahead collectively, we may have to raised perceive the websites and dialogue codecs that facilitate this type of considerate discourse. If partisans retreat to echo chamber platforms like Parler and Rumble, will these sorts of clever conversations between individuals with various viewpoints stop?
As Individuals confront the monetary challenges of a pandemic, automation, precarious employment and globalization, offering boards the place we are able to talk about divergent concepts in an open-minded somewhat than an ideological method could make a important distinction to the options we select. Many Individuals are already utilizing digital platforms to debate choices, somewhat than being frightened away by – or attacking – the drained outdated socialist bogeyman.
Robert Kozinets doesn’t work for, seek the advice of, personal shares in or obtain funding from any firm or organisation that might profit from this text, and has disclosed no related affiliations past their tutorial appointment.
