Full intent on being cringe-on-main but.. have you guys considered A/B/O in a trans/GNC way?

I mean, like... OK, you have a Primary Gender (PM), which is the "male-female standard", and you have your Secondary Gender (SG), Alpha/Beta/Omega.

But how are those two supposed to relate? Culturally speaking, each country, and each group of people, and each household have different standards of what a man and a woman can and should do or act. HOW does that translate to your SG? Is it culturally asumed that an AlphaMan/OmegaWoman is the standard, or maybe it's just backward/old fashioned thinking? Was it considered a shame to have an Alpha!daughter, but not as shameful as having and Omega!son? Or backwards?

What about the whole pheromones thing? Alphas and Gammas have distinct pheromones, and in some stories, there are pheromones blockers or even "false pheremones" perfumes or some shit. Is it expected for people who dont fit the AlphaMan-OmegaWoman dichotomy to "mask it"? Is the reveal/rebellion of expressing your true self an "coming-out" kinda act?

AND WHAT ABOUT TRANS/GNC PEOPLE?!

What about an AMAB!Trans Woman who is also an Alpha? Would people say "why did you even change your PG if your SG aligned well with what you have?" or "you're making your life more complicated for yourself! if only you were a trans OmegaWoman/trans AlphaMan..." Are people who feel unconfortable with their assignated at birth PG but who feel alright or even proud of their SG the equivalent of real life trans/GNC people who don't do HRT or surgery?

AND WHAT ABOUT SECONDARY GENDER TRANS PEOPLE?!

This is something i've never seen in any A/B/O fic i have read yet.

OF COURSE, its pretty common for characters (usually MaleOmegas) to express they hate their SG gender. Very ocassionally this happens to Alphas, but it's usually Omegas who don't like their SG (sexism). Like, it goes from mild "i wish i had been born an Alpha" to "I HATE BEING AN OMEGA, PEOPLE LOOK DOWN ON ME, I HAVE TO CONSTANTLY PROVE MYSELF, MY BODY DOES THINGS I DONT LIKE, I HATE IT!".

And, I've got to say, this is probably tinted with my trans!woman colored glasses, but this does sounds pretty trans/GNC to me. SURE, it could be just about hating the social expectation of your SG, but... come on, its simply logic: if there's people who don't identified with their assigned at birt PG, the same logic would apply to folks' SG. And how would that work? Well, there's the masking with opposite SG pheromones, and suppresors to both heat and ruts. There's probably gotta be some equivalent to HRT to SG. But in the A/B/O worlds, the SG is ALWAYS more important than the PG, so IMAGINE the OUTROAR of someone "daring to think they can change their nature".

AND WHAT ABOUT SEXUAL/ROMANTIC ATRACTION/LACK OF?!

In the A/B/O worlds, sexual/romantic attraction is the norm. Not wanting to have a Mate, or at least a Pack, its considered weird at best, unhealty and prophane at worst. What if you're aro? Or worst, ace? "So you want to be with me but not have my pups/give me your pups? you dont love me -.-" and stuff like that.

And even if you have interest in sexual and romantic interest... do they match your partner? In A/B/O stories, Alphas are usually attracted to Omegas-Betas and viceversa. Sometimes there are B/O or O/O ships, but hardly A/A ships, because "of biological reasons, A/A relationship would always fight and be aggresive to eachothe" (homophobia). What if you're and AlphaWoman but are only atracted to woman, regardless of SG? What if such AlphaWoman finds an woman they like but she's trans!PG!Alpha?

There must be stuff i'm missing, like the social hierarchy of the PG/SG combinations (Alpha are on top, Omegas are at the bottom, and how they interact with the SG) or the treatment of Betas (they either don't exist or are unimportant or reduced to the role of caretakers), but this post is long already.

TL:TR: A/B/O started, as far as i know, to have M/M couples pregnant, and yes, its heavily fueled by sexism, abuse/rape, gender essentialism and other shit.

BUT if you go past that, if you're willing to really apply some of the real world actual issues to A/B/O, you find yourself with a complex setting with lot of Worldbuilding rip for the taking, where the characters of the fandom you're into can fit-subvert-break the molds of the world and explore how that applies to your ship/your story.

And if you're into it, you can add even MORE animal/furry stuff, like were-beast transformation and stuff.

Just... think outside the mold!

An Extensive Guide to My Omegaverse/Misceverse

While my version of the Omegaverse that I use in my fics and roleplays has the fundamental basics of the canon Omegaverse, there are several key additions and tweaks.

This post will be a work-in-progress, being updated as I think of other information that needs to be added.

Post under the cut.

Secondary Genders:

Secondary Genders are the foundation of the Omegaverse. They dictate who is topping, who is bottoming, who has heats or ruts. There are three Secondary Genders, which are Alpha, Beta, and Omega, along with subtypes of each secondary gender called Tertiary Genders, which encompass delta, sigma, nu, mu, psi, xi, gamma, digamma, elipson, enigma, zeta, and theta.

List of most common second genders.

Here is some information about the main three Secondary Genders:

ALPHA:

Alphas and alpha-subtypes are the second most common Secondary Gender. Approximately 40% of the population are alphas. They are known for being natural leaders with predispositions towards violence, possessiveness, and aggression. However, a good alpha can also be an excellent provider and protector, caring deeply for their mate and/or pack.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF AN ALPHA:

Alphas are usually larger than betas or omegas. The average height is between 5’7 to 6’4, 140-250 pounds, but this will vary from person to person.

In males, broad shoulders and traditionally “masculine” features are common, along with wide chests and thick torsos, large hands and feet, strong jaws, and a naturally high level of testosterone.

In females, larger frames, narrow hips ( due to inability to become impregnated, therefore rendering null the need to have a pelvic bone wide enough for childbearing ), and thicker distribution of body hair is common. 99% of female alphas are born without a uterus and do not have a menstrual cycle.

FANGS/INCISORS:

Fangs, also known as incisors or “canine teeth,” are a prominent alpha feature, biologically designed for marking their territory ( omegas or other packmates ).

Alpha fangs are usually half an inch to an inch long, and are thicker than other teeth and sharp. The larger the fangs, the more appeal they have. Fang care is very culturally important, with all pups ( no matter their secondary gender ) being taught to thoroughly brush their fangs for at least twenty seconds longer than the rest of their teeth. Bright white fangs and sharper fangs are seen as desirable traits.

Some alphas, especially asexual, aromantic, or aro-ace individuals, may choose to have their fangs filed down by a dentist to show that they do not have an interest in relationships or dating.

KNOTS:

A knot is a thick circle of tissue at the base of an alpha’s member. When they are hard, that tissue inflates into a knot-like formation, biologically designed to be thrust past the rim of an omega’s hole to lock them together while the alpha ejectulates, to ensure that the omega’s body receives as much seed ( also known as cum, semen, ect ) as possible, raising the possibility that they become pregnant.

A common slang term for this is being “pupped up,” or bred, meaning that an omega has been claimed, mated, knotted, and then impregnated by their alpha.

Male alpha knots are usually between two to four inches in thickness. Female alphas, who have an inverted member ( but still fully functioning ) much like that of a male dog hidden within a sheath and will only appear when stimulated, usually have knots that are slightly smaller.

Female alphas may or may not have a vagina. Most commonly they will not, as it would lead to nowhere except in the 1% of female alphas who are born with a uterus, but biological variations have been documented in between 3-7% of the female alpha population.

RUTS:

Ruts are exclusive to alphas and alpha subtypes. They usually occur annually or bi-annually, often in the spring and fall. During this time, an alpha’s instincts drive them to mate and knot a partner, to breed and produce offspring with them.

Ruts last between 3 and 10 days. During this time, alphas will have raised libido and stamina. They may become increasingly agitated, to the point where they may give in to instincts altogether and become “rabid.” This is a slang term, and does not actually mean that they are diseased, but instead means that they pose a serious danger to any omegas in the area, and will be aggressive towards other alphas to the point of physical altercations.

However, ruts can also be triggered by an omega’s heat, or during bonding. More on all three subjects can be found below.

Rut suppressants are an OTC ( over-the-counter ) medicine used to control and prevent alphas ruts, especially ruts brought on from scenting an omega in heat.

An alpha on suppressants will be more mellow, cohabitate with omegas and other alphas better, and experience a lower libido and decreased instincts.

It is recommended by doctors that alphas go off of their suppressants at least once every four years to allow the body’s natural needs to be met. If an alpha suppresses their ruts for too long, they can suffer physical symptoms such as depression, mood swings, intense irritability, increased aggression, restlessness, along with an oversensitive member and body pain. The longer an alpha suppresses their ruts, the stronger their rut will be after they go off of their suppressants.

Who can an alpha mate with?

Alphas CANNOT fully mate with other alphas. Alpha-alpha relationships are not common, but not unheard of. Alpha-alpha relationships will never produce pups, as alphas are unable to become pregnant.

Alphas CAN fully mate with female betas, since female betas have a fully functioning uterus and vagina. Female betas have a low fertility rate but can still become pregnant. However, due to their lack of strong pheromones, female betas are not the most desired mate for an alpha.

Alphas CANNOT fully mate with a male betas, as male betas do not have a functioning vagina or uterus. Alphas who partner up or bond with male betas will not produce pups. Therefore, male betas and alphas do not often bond, but do often partner up for casual hookups to help unmated alphas through their ruts.

PACKS AND PACK ALPHAS:

A pack is a group of two or more individuals that share a bond. This includes tight-knit friend groups, family groups, or polycules.

Not all friends are packmates. Pack is the strongest bond that can be shared between individuals who ARE NOT mated to each other. Mated individuals can still be part of a pack while retaining a special, separate bond with their partner.

Packs often live together, sharing food, rent, and sleeping space. Non-sexual intimacy is crucial for the pack bond to remain strong. Cuddles, hugs, kisses, and sharing beds and nests are all common practices among packs.

Packs often include siblings or relatives but do not have to. A person can and often is part of more than one pack at the same time. For example, a person may be a part of a family pack ( parents, siblings, and the individual ) and one to two friend packs. Usually a person will have one specific pack they are closest to.

Another common pack structure is that of the POLYCULE. This is where multiple individuals are mated to one another to form a pack like those made by wolves. It is in these packs that the PACK ALPHA is the most prominent figure.

The pack alpha is often the most senior alpha in a pack. They are entitled to control over the other pack members, but may be forced from their position by unanimous vote if they are abusing their power.

In a family pack, the pack alpha would be the oldest alpha relative. This may mean an alpha mother, alpha father, alpha grandparent, or eldest alpha sibling is the pack alpha.

In a friend pack, the pack alpha would be the alpha who had been in the friend group the longest, or the oldest alpha in the group.

In a polycule pack, the pack alpha would be the most dominant alpha. They would have the right to breed and mate all omegas in the polycule, as well as partner up with the betas in the polycule. The pack alpha may, in some polycules, also have intercourse with other alphas in the relationship.

HOW PACK ALPHAS ARE ESTABLISHED:

Pheromones:

Whichever alpha has the strongest pheromonal presence has a natural predisposition to be the dominant alpha in any situation or in a pack.

Pheromones are also known as “scent.” Every person has a scent based on their pheromones that communicates their mood and what their body is feeling. There is a distinct scent for a person who is sad, happy, angry, or anxious. Alphas and omegas have the strongest natural pheromonal scents.

Physical strength or seniority:

Whichever alpha is physically the strongest may be more likely to be a pack alpha. This will usually not apply if there are multiple younger alphas in their prime versus a senior alpha, as an older alpha will naturally hold a more authoritative presence.

Unanimous decision:

Oftentimes, an alpha will become the pack alpha simply because they have proven that they can protect and provide for their pack. An ideal pack alpha is firm but not harsh and possessive but not controlling. This is often the case in family packs.

For example, a family might have an alpha father and beta mother. They would have children, thus creating a pack. Because the father is the most senior alpha, he would be considered the pack alpha.

Another viable example would be a polycule with two alphas, two betas, and one omega. The pack alpha would be the one of the two alphas who is stronger, more dominant, and has a more prominent pheromonal presence. The pack alpha will likely “pup up” the omega, mate and bondmark the betas, and packmark and bondmark the other alpha. The other alpha may be allowed to also mate with the omega and betas, depending on the polycule’s personal decisions and consent.

PACKMARKS, BONDMARKS, AND SCENT GLANDS:

Scent glands are one of the most important things to understand in the Omegaverse. Scent glands are small glands beneath the skin, often appearing as a bump or not at all, that produce pheromones and the unique “scent” of alphas, betas, and omegas.

Alphas usually have three scent glands, one on the nape of their neck and one on each of their inner thighs. They produce the “dominant” scent that alphas are known for, which allows them to force an omega, beta, or lesser-ranking alpha to submit to them ( both in a societal sense and for mating ). An alpha’s scent is extremely important to their omega ( if they are mated to one ). Their scent can calm their omega down in an instant and provides safety and security for their omega.

Omegas can have as few as two scent glands or as many as eight. The usual position for these glands are on the nape of their neck, one on each side of their neck, and one on each inner thighs, along with one on each inner wrist. They produce the “submissive” scent that omegas are known for, which naturally catches the attention of alphas. This scent is described as “sweet” or “alluring,” especially when an omega goes into heat, which is when their scent is the strongest and will be almost irresistible to an alpha and can cause any nearby alphas to go “rabid.” HERE is a post about nesting that is canon to my Omegaverse au ( not mine ). Omegas can produce a plethora of soothing scents, ranging from scents used to comfort pups or other distraught omegas, calm down an agitated alpha, or to self-soothe.

Betas often only have one scent gland at the nape of their neck and one on each wrist. Their scent is described as “weak” or “blank.” They produce very few pheromones except the ones used in secondary gender identification, marking them as a beta. They can also produce “safe scents” used to soothe an omega who has been upset by an alpha. Betas are like the gay best friend, in a way, comforting a person after a breakup.

The diagram above is a common example of scent gland placement, but this will vary from person to person.

PACK MARKS are not placed upon any scent glands EXCEPT for the parental or platonic, UNLESS that pack is also a polycule. A packmark are bitten marks that show that a person is a part of a pack, completing the pack bond, and will only remain as long as the pack bond is strong. If the pack bond is too weak or the pack splits up, the mark will fade into a pale white scar instead of a pink mark.

BONDMARKS are placed upon scent glands. They are bitten marks to show that two individuals are mated and bonded to each other in partnership. If the bond becomes too weak, the mark will fade into a pale white scar instead of a pink mark.

A mating/partner bond is a deep connection between two individuals that partially connects their emotions, thoughts, and psyches. It can also be called a soul bond. It is said that bonding with the person you want to spend your life with is one of the single most fulfilling experiences a person will ever have. Emotions are at an all-time high, and both omegas and alphas have described it as finding their "missing piece." Bonding between an omega and beta, alpha and beta, or other less common secondary genders is less intense due to the beta's lack of pheromones and lessened instincts, but is still a very intimate affair.

Pack bonds are not so much finding a "missing piece" as a feeling of deep connection, comradery, and something "bigger than yourself." This will change in polycule packs, when the members are not only packmates but also bondmates.

Note:

If a bonded omega is neglected by their alpha, causing the bond to fade, the omega will suffer detrimental physical and mental effects, ranging from deep depression, low mood, intense anxiety, body pain, fevers, headaches, flu-like symptoms, low energy, increased nesting, and more. The longer the omega is neglected, the more serious the symptoms will become. Severe omega neglect can lead to death and is punishable by court-mandated couples counseling and even heavy jail time if the bond is broken.

OMEGAS

Omegas and omega-subtypes are the third most common secondary gender. About 10% of the population are omegas.

Omegas are physically smaller, weaker, and more sensitive than alphas and betas. They get stereotyped as submissive stay-at-home spouses, but omegas actually have a wide span of individual personalities. Some omegas may be more prone to defensiveness due to instinctive fear of more dominant secondary genders, even coming off as snappy or aggressive. Other omegas fit a softer, more nurturing description, being good with pups and being naturally empathetic and companionable.

PHYSICAL DESCRIPTIONS OF AN OMEGA:

Male omegas are usually between 5’0 and 5’7, weighing roughly between 100–180 pounds. They usually have smaller builds than alphas and betas, though their body types may range from slender, trim, stocky, pudgy, or more. Big eyes and soft skin, as well as the traditional “sweet” omega scent are key ways to spot an omega. Male omegas also don’t produce as much testosterone as male betas or male alphas, leading to less muscle mass and gentler features. They can be extremely agile and fast due to low distribution of body fat.

Male omegas typically have “litters” of 2-3 pups at a time due to their smaller womb size compared to female omegas. However, more than 50% of male omegas who have had multiple pregnancies report that at least one pregnancy produced a non-litter ( singular ) pup.

Female omegas are usually between 4’9 and 5’5, weighing roughly between 100–190 pounds. They most commonly have small, curvy builds, small breasts, and wide hips to accommodate pups during childbirth. They have difficulty gaining muscle mass and usually have more body fat to naturally sustain them during pregnancy.

Female omegas usually have litters of 2-6 pups at a time. Pups from litters may be significantly smaller than a non-litter pup, appearing premature, but with no actual health risk to the newborn. Studies have shown that litter-born pups evolve to have higher levels of competitive, extrovertive, and social behavior in adulthood due to the early bonds they make with their littermates.

Like alphas, omegas have “fangs.” However, their fangs are much smaller, thinner, and more blunt, since they are only used for claiming bites after an alpha has already claimed and mated the omega. Some omegas won’t even use their fangs at all, since marking their alpha is not necessary for the bond to be completed. They will often use their fangs for small nibbles and nips, especially along the jawline or neck, to show affection, companionship, or possessiveness. This is common between both mates and friends.

HEATS:

Heats are exclusive to omegas and omegan subtypes. They usually occur annually or bi-annually, often in the spring and fall. During this time, an omega’s instincts drive them to mate and be knotted by a partner, to breed and produce offspring with them.

Heats last between 1 and 3 days. During this time, omegas will have an extremely raised libido. They may become agitated, defensive, clingy, or anxious. Heats are emotionally taxing both mentally and physically for omegas.

Further information about heats has sadly had to be removed due to the post being flagged. Google can provide further information, since my Omegaverse AU is compliant with canon Omegaverse heat info. Seriously, though, it’s not fair that people post things far more explicit than this and yet somehow this gets flagged???

Betas

Betas and beta-subtypes are the most common Secondary Gender, making up roughly 50% of the population.

They're known for being the bridge between alpha and omega, the in-between "average joes" who are neither dominant or submissive. Betas are known for their level-headedness, loyalty, and trustworthiness, and they can be heat partners for omegas or rut partners for alphas.

PHYSCIAL DESCRIPTION OF A BETA:

Male betas can be anywhere from 5'0 to 6'0, 120-180 pounds, with light to moderate muscles and average builds. They have less testosterone than male alphas but over 30% more than male omegas. Their reproductive organs are the same as male alphas’, but they lack a knot.

Female betas can be anywhere from 4’8 to 5’8, 130-180 pounds, with light to moderate muscles and less fat distribution than female omegas. They usually have larger breasts but narrower hips, as female betas have a lower fertility rate and usually can only have 2-3 pups before becoming infertile. Instead of litters, female betas also usually have one pup at a time. Female betas have the same internal reproductive organs ( uterus, ovaries, ect ) as a female omega, but do not have heat cycles. Instead, most female betas have menstrual cycles of 28-30 days. However, up to 25% of female betas report that they have no menstrual cycles, which lowers their fertility rate further.

Betas lack fangs. They do, however, have canine incisors ( as regular humans in our world do ).

If a beta pairs up with an alpha, the alpha will bondmark them. If a beta pairs up with an omega, they will bondmark them using their canine incisors. The bondmark will lack definition and may scar less perfectly than a bondmark given by an alpha, but as long as the omega’s scent glands are punctured, the bond will be completed.

This is due to the simple fact that the entire plot is spurred by Su Xiyan’s pregnancy, with her giving birth to Binghe alone while Tianlang-jun is imprisoned, but if the series was omegaverse there is no way in all hell that notorious dom sugar daddy masc Su Xiyan wouldn’t be the alpha to submissive and breedable omega Tianlang-jun. Long text about my head canon/ world building on abo zosan fic I'm working on.

Anatomy, Heats, Ruts and some hot take on bitching.

Betas

Do not experience heats or ruts but they can go into pseudo heats and ruts to help their pack-mates regulate and balance pheromones.

They are masters at balancing group scents and neutralize pheromones in tense situations. Betas can thus manipulate an alpha or omega in a contesting group with smells that make them less inclined to attack and/or fight. Betas are praised for this ability and while a crew may exist without an alpha or omega, without a beta it is very hard to keep the balance in the group.

Usopp thinks about this a WHOLE lot. Not that he stresses about this or feels any pressure, no way! Didn't you know the great scenter Usopp not only scented a whole country on the brink of civil war he scented them so good and into such harmony and balance he was crowned their hero and offered their most beautiful princess to marry. He had to decline the offer of course as a brave and powerful warrior of the sea he needed to set sail.

No? Well now you know, you silly goose.

Ruts

Alpha men and women have a penis and can impregnate others, only female alphas can get impregnated as they also have a vagina and birth canal. However due to much higher hormone production they may find it harder to get pregnant than betas and omegas.

Alphas go into ruts typically each month. Normally a Rut is over in two to tree days, unless spent with a mate. If their partner are an omega in heat, then it normally adapts up to the omegas breeding need, normally about a week but can be longer or shorter. Ruts need not be sexual, some just feel a heightened need to scent their packs, increase of aggression or posturing that a beta (or old alpha) may help balance with pheromones. Often more needy and want to be seen and praised for their efforts of pleasing their pack. Some alphas sleep a lot after a rut due to they exhaust themself by helping their pack and or training, fighting etc.

Depending on their health they can "jump" in their rut cycle. For example if very sick and/or injured. But also if they are suffering from severe mental illness, their pheromones and nervous systemen may "jump" some ruts to preserve energy and or protect the alpha from losing control and starting an unnecessary fight. The other extreme that can happen is an increase of hormones and pheromones making the alpha go into an overdrive rut. Those ruts turns them very aggressive, they get territorial and challenge alphas and opponents that they normally never would due to obvious power disparity, but also gets a boost of adrenaline and endurance. Zoro may enter this state when fighting in in life or death fights like the one in Wano. (or most of his big fights tbh)

Alphas are normally well equipped and all have the tissue needed at the base of their penises to create a knot. Knotting during sex is a euphoric experience for alphas and the emotional and hormonal high they get from knotting and staying locked together with their partner is a need in an alpha, especially during ruts. They can therefore sometimes be accused of asking too much, too early in a sexual relationship as knotting may not be every partners cup of tea so to speak.

Omegas are better equipped to stand knotting due to their own high it may bring during sex as they are deeply affected by alpha pheromones. Alphas can mate and bond to whoever, but are instinctively submissive to omegas and their moods. This is probably to not hurt them during heat and/or their own rut. They may find it hard to deny an omegas request, especially if they are in the same pack.

They also show this more submissive behavior (showing their neck, grunts, chuffs, whining like big babies) when they want to be included in pack building/nest bonding but as omegas normally don't let alphas into their nests they may be excluded at times. When they do get allowed into a cuddle puddle or nest cuddle they are like happy dogs or lazy cats depending how they may be affected by this kind of closeness. (I like to think Zoro gets SO happy when included, but try to be stoic about it and not appear needy when the non alphas in the crew scent or cuddles in the nest or on the deck. Luffy is a special case as the pack can keenly feel his extreme need for closeness. That does not give him entrance tickets to nest bondings thou.) Alphas often feel a need to please omegas, even if they are not sexually attracted or bonded to them. Omegas are in the same boat toward alphas, they are more likely to fawn and preen in front of an alpha in pre rut to please and maintain balance in the pack. For omega/alpha partners this can be very exiting and thrilling.

Alphas are often doting on their packs and want to have an eye on them, and during rut this instinct can go into such overdrive they turn aggressive against people that are not part of their group. This often makes them isolate in a rut room (especially if they have a sexual rut) or in the enclosed territory their pack have scented so they may be around and be soothed by their pack. Other alphas in the pack may spar and play figth to help each other blow off some steam. If they experience a sexual rut and they do have a partner/mate that are willing to help them the rut may end quicker, But there are plenty of toys they may use. Knotting in a fleshlight may not be as good as the real deal, but it takes the edge off and helps them throu the rut more comfortably.

Most of the time an alphas rut is very stable once it passes their presentation/adolescent years. For rut jumping and overdrive it needs to be rather a serious illness, hormone issues and/or a traumatic event that deeply affect the alpha. Examples are sudden loss of their mate or child, losing their whole pack, bitching, serious traumatic injury or sickness, (Physical and or mental)

When in rut an alphas scent is stronger, sticks for longer and is much easier to smell from long distances if not using salves/scent muting aids. Zoro is especially bad at muting his scent as he have used it and his pheromones too aggressively dominate opponents in his start as a bounty hunter. The crew grow used to it but others may find him extra intimidating due to this.

Both Zoro and Luffy experience rut jumpings in the two year time skip when separated from their pack. Luffy who suffers from separation anxiety have actually quite a few problems with rut jumping. After marineford he did not have a rut for almost a whole year. Zoros rut beacome unregular, something he had never experienced before. Took him almost a year to center himself and getting control of his ruts again. This training did give him an strong control over himself when in rut and/or faced with others in rut/heat so not to be as affected by others pheromones and smell. Is the most stable in the straw hats for a reason. ( But is also an expression of his need for control especially after thriller bark and 2 year TS)

Heats

Both female and male omegas have a birth canal and vagina. Male omegas also have a penis and testicles, but are smaller than betas and alphas. Both can be impregnated, only male omegas may impregnate but may have lower chances to do so than betas and alphas.

One unusual and sometimes explotited thing with omega biology is that they can carry litters from more than one sire. If they have multiple partners during a heat (especially if there are alphas that keep triggering the heat to last and or restart) the children born may be from all of the partners. Some omegas also have double pregnancies. That is to say they get pregnant again during the pregnancy and may birth another pup about one to two months after the first litter is born. This takes a heavy toll on the omega but is one of the reasons omegas are sought after in sexual slavery or in cultures where a lot of heirs are a priority and they are more or less looked upon as breeding tools.

Omegas suffers from sexual slavery the most along with female mermaids and may be offered as prices and accessories to the wealthy and powerful. Alabasta and Water 7 are places that have long tried to stop this discrimination and are looked upon as safe havens in the grand line. Kamabakka kingdom is another, more secret place. Wano protects their omegas, but the sexist practices against women also affects omegas whether male or female. They are often considered even more in need of protecting and are not allowed to carry the sword. (We see traces of this in Zoro's upbringing.)

Omegas in heats are more vulnerable for attack due to how their bodies react during heats and this is one of the reasons they are looked (down) upon as in bigger need of protection in many countries as well as why they are discriminated against.

They experience heats every three months. When presenting during adolescence it tends to come and go in waves and they may have two heats in just one month, or one every month. Adolescence is typically a hard time for omegas and they need family/their pack to be balanced. The less secure environment, the more fluctuations until their heats stabilises in the typical three month cycle.

Most heats are familial and they spend it with their beta and/or omega pack mates. Normally a heat lasts for about a week, and is really intense three to four days. Depending on the person it may be the first, middle or the last day of the heat.

Symptoms of a heat is usually fever, cramps, overproduction of slick, oversensitivity to lots of fabrics, increased and more sensitive sense of smell. A higher sensitivity to obey timbre and scruffing, which is why most omegas want to isolate in their nests or dens with trusted ones during heats. The need to look after their pack increases and may manifest by scenting and cuddling. But may also express more controlling behaviors to keep an eye on everybody and keep them close. They feel a strong need to protect their space where their people are.

Omegas smell very good during heats and one of the reasons alphas avoid them unless they are mates, as they may trigger a rut and thus trigger the omega into a sexual heat.

A sexual heat is normally a sweaty affair and if unlucky lasts the whole week in a breeding frenzy. Most omegas find this very tiring and normally don't have the stamina to pleasure themself during a whole week. If exposed or triggered by Alphas they may go into a breeding heat/ frenzy, their need to mate/breed completely overtake and they go almost feral. This can be used agains omegas and why they may show a more aggressive attitude against alphas. While in a sexual heat and without a partner toys helps take the edge off and lower the need of sex. And stable pack mates may help stabilize their pheromone and hormone production back to a standard heat.

I like to think there are knot rings they use and/or dildos that are equipped with pheromones/hormones that simulate the experience of mating. When used this eases the omega out of the sexual heat so they can faster return to their pack. Knotting and getting breed helps the heat end faster unless the alpha can't control their phermones and kick-starts another heat.

Hot take? Omegas are the most territorial ones. Once they have a pack they are very aggressive about protecting it. Alphas help scent and secure the "borders" of their omegas territory. If there is no omega in a pack the alpha takes on the role to scent and maintain territory but is not as defensive about it (unless in rut) as an omega may be.

Sunny is an example of a territory, and the nesting space an omega create is off limits to the pack unless invited in. An alpha that gets to cuddle and get pampered in an omegas nest after an injury for example is very lucky as they are most often excluded from this space due to their smell. Luffy can sit and look at the nest in the doorway with the biggest puppy eyes and only get snarls and hisses from Sanji. He is the most territorial omega anybody ever will meet.

But, he also takes VERY good care of his pack. As he makes food even during heats (unless it is too intense and he is incapacitated.) he does have problems denying women of course even if they are alphas, but not even an alpha lady is allowed near his nest unless under special circumstances. His instincts can go haywire and he borders on feral when policing his space, and he feels extra protective about the galley when stressed.

Bitching.

Personally I don't really like the idea that one can turn another alpha into an omega by bitching. (I have been thinking too much about reproductive function and suddenly growing them because bitching just feels wrong for me, lol). In my au a bitched alpha is an alpha that have been through abuse and/or traumatic events. Examples can be rape, slavery, domestic abuse, loss of their whole pack when very young and left to fend for themself, aggressive and distressing force scentings from other alphas that show dominance and leave their scent on the other, etc.

The term bitching is thus a derogatory term and is locked down upon by many.

For one to be "bitched" an alpha have suffered this in such intense and long period of time their pheromone production is forever damaged and their nervous system can't regulate it at all. They may smell like pre puberty alphas and their pheromones always smell "broken" when released, especially when upset/when they feel strong emotions. Ruts are often irregular, the need to show aggression to protect themselfs often turns into fear and posturing. A bitching often happens when the alpha is young and defenseless growing up, but may also happen to adult alphas that been so badly traumatized they can never properly recover. This practise is often used to keep dominance in a pack by ruling with fear, or used in war/torture. Some pirate fleets (and marines) are not below this behavior and they terrifies the areas where they roam. Even betas and omegas can technically be "bitched" too but alphas are seemingly more sensitive to getting their phermone and hormone production disrupted/destroyed.

What’s your take on the octatrio reacting to an omega reader using their clothes or other items in their nest when they’re going into heat? I’m particularly curious what you think of Azul since idk if you’ve ever characterized him as an alpha. But I think all of them could be so cute regardless! Omega/omega and omega/beta have such good potential! ( ⸝⸝´꒳`⸝⸝)

:O omg I have so many thoughts about this!!! I love this trope,,, it's so cute and there are so many ways it could go depending on dynamic. I like to write Azul as an alpha because of my own self-indulgent preferences, but also I like to imagine he was an incredibly late bloomer and everyone thought he was an omega for the longest time until he finally has an actual rut and !!!!!! I could ramble on about that forever. <3 but I do agree!! There's so much delicious potential with non-traditional abo pairings!!!!

Being besties with them...... something something they're so attuned to your scent because you're close and so it's fairly easy for them to locate you,,, quite literally sniffing you out!!! I think seeing you cuddled up in your nest with his clothes and any other things that smell like him would make Azul feel so much better about your relationship, whether platonic or romantic. It reaffirms that you like him and are comforted by his presence and scent. That you trust him. Of course there's also the characteristics of your heat that make you much more receptive to him, which he'll use to explain and rationalize everything. T_T but deep down he's pleased and hopes that one day you'll ask him for his clothes. He wants to see you clinging to his shirt or wrapping yourself up in one of his sweaters all the time!!!

Floyd...... oooohh he thinks you're just the cutest. He'll keep his distance at first. He doesn't want to startle you or stress you out. But since it's him, you're familiar with his scent and it makes him happy when your pheromones are purely sweet and stress-free. <3 waaaa he adores you!!! You'll have to invite Floyd into your nest if you want him to come close and even then he's still hesitant because you're not in the right mind (if you're just friends). Jade is impossible to read most of the time, and when you do try to read him it's like solving a complex equation. >_< he can be so difficult (usually on purpose) sometimes... most of his teasing is there to distract you from his body language, how he's always so relaxed around you, but when you're in heat the last thing you're trying to do is dissect and analyze Jade's behaviors. Beneath that sharp smile of amusement, there's genuine sweetness and it's quite a heartwarming sight to see you hugging a bunch of his laundry close. Jade wouldn't be Jade if he isn't taking photos to later tease you about when you're not so heat-brained. He'll ask you silly and obvious questions like "Do you find my scent that enjoyable?" just to have his suspicions validated. Jade will stay to look after you and ensure all is well if that's what you'd like, but if you want anything specific from him you'll have to use your words and ask~ >:) how is he supposed to know otherwise? Give Jade one chance and he'll spoil you rotten in that nest, tending to your every need.

Soap growled to himself as he slogged his way up a hill, through a muddy forest, in the dark, to get to the rendezvous site. He thought that he could see the horrible stark glare of the flood lights glinting between the trees, but it was equally as likely that he was hallucinating at this point. He stopped when he came to a tree that was downed across his path.

The tree had fallen long ago, without any malicious intent or true purpose, but now it was interrupting Soap’s b-line.

Soap paused there for a long moment, staring at the log as the gears in his mind slipped and spun. A tooth caught, the gears screamed into meaningful action, and he pulled out his compass. Aligning the needle with north, he confirmed that if he wanted to continue directly east-northeast the path was forward. Over the tree. A tree that was caught on various other bits of foliage and was hovering at about the height of his upper thighs. Casting a look up and down its length showed that he’d have to climb some part of the tree to continue forward regardless, as he couldn’t see either of its ends through the gloam of the night. Soap tucked away his compass and braced a hand on the trunk with a deep resigned groan.

This was gonnae be pure shite.

Turning, he sat on the log and swung his left leg over. Then, taking quick breaths to psych himself up, he hooked a hand behind his right knee and lifted it up and over the tree in one quick agonizing movement.

Folding over his legs, his lips pulling up in a reflexive snarl and his breaths hissed through his fangs as his face crumpled into a pained grimace. His instincts were caught between the want to grab at the thing causing him pain and the deathly fear that any touch would make the hurt worse.

Soap sat himself up and stared down at the shoddy bandage he'd wrapped around his thigh, vaguely acknowledging that feeling so detached from the hands that were shakily hovering over his leg was a concern. Dragging his eyes away from the bandage, he scanned his surroundings. He didn’t think he'd screamed, but he wasn't sure. His brain was already blacking out the memory to dull the pain it contained.

Soap sat on that log, in the quiet of the forest, for longer than he’ll ever consciously realize. Ears flicking for any sounds that were out of place, hazy blue eyes scanning for danger, but not truly cataloguing anything as his mind fell into a haze. Giving completely over to his hindbrain and lower instincts. Sitting still and terrified, staring into the unknowable dark, like the blooded prey he’d become.

Eventually he came back to himself, without ever knowing he’d lost time at all.

With a throaty groan he pushed up off the log and started limping. Cresting the hill, a surge of relief hit him like a cannonball and nearly sent him to his knees, there in the distance was a clearing filled by ramshackle tents held together with Military Grade duct tape, and people swarming about in the artificial dawn cast by humming floodlights.

Their temporary base of operations that had been set up to support the months-long mission to completely rout the area of enemy combatants that they’d taken on.

The radio transceiver on his plate carrier sparked and spat another mocking blat of static. If there’d been any chance of an enemy hearing its occasional squawks, and if wholly removing it from its mount on his back didn’t involve unstrapping and wriggling out of ninety-percent of his kit, he would have fallen to the temptation to punt it into the dark of the trees within the first kilometre of his trek.

It could have been worse, if he was to be honest with himself, the fall -from a height he very deliberately wasn’t remembering- into the disgusting puddle that had busted his radio and slammed a delightfully convenient piece of debris straight through the outside of his right thigh could have killed him. Instead it just sheared a long bloody graze through his leg and bruised what felt like every square centimetre of his back.

A deep fog was rising to swamp his better thinking, his instincts cajoling and crooning. Begging him to find a nice dark nook. Safe and hidden from everyone. He could sleep, curled up nice and warm and safe and alone. To heal where no one could reach him. Where no more pain could find him.

Shaking himself back to clarity he realized he’d stopped walking. He stood, swaying, his better leg threatening to buckle at the knee, and staring into the woods. Facing the exact opposite direction of the camp’s hubbub.

Forcibly quelling his instincts, Soap turned around and walked for the camp. Consciously pacing his breathing to keep himself centred.

In for four, hold for four, out for four.

He’d lost the will to force his right leg into even trying to support his weight and hobbled along, falling into a brainless rhythm.

Jump left leg forward, drag right leg level, brace, jump left leg forward, drag right leg level, brace.

It was no one's definition of graceful, but he was moving.

“Halt!” The loud command snapped his head up, he’d reached the edge of the camp and the perimeter guards were aiming at him.

“Hands up! Hands up! Who goes there!” Shouted a cacophony of voices, three or four of them converging on his location. Soap obediently raised his hands into clear view, letting them come for him.

Who the fuck says ‘who goes there’. They’re perimeter guards, not knights stood atop a gate tower.

“Sergeant MacTavish,” Soap wrung from his aching throat at the first figure that got within a metre of him, “Radio non-functional,”

The guards looked between themselves, he didn’t recognize any of them and they -obviously- didn't recognize him. They stood in a small bureaucratic stalemate, the guards were unwilling to approach and pat down a potential superior, but were equally unwilling to let through an unknown that hadn’t followed the rules to radio and signal his approach.

Thankfully, the decision was swiftly taken out of their hands by Ghost noticing the small commotion happening on the other side of camp and, upon looking over, easily identified the shambling mud monster as Soap.

“Johnny!” He all but screamed as he sprinted across the camp. People frantically dove out of his way and he guiltlessly barreled over the unlucky few that didn’t move fast enough.

Ghost’s cry summoned Price and Gaz out from the depths of the command tents. They saw Ghost go ramming past then clocked the swamp beast he was running for and scrambled to follow.

Ghost snarled at the suicidal fools surrounding his Mate, posturing in front of Johnny until they backed off. With his instincts humming happily at him for defending his Mate and chasing off the interlopers, he crowded close to Johnny. Crooning and snuffling at his neck, rubbing their jaws together to scent him, ignoring the muck that was rubbing off into the fibres of his balaclava.

He reluctantly backed off when Gaz whined and yapped, pushing at his elbow and burrowing into his side, entreating Ghost to be allowed access to his pack-brother.

As soon as Gaz had assured himself that Soap was back in relatively one piece, he stepped away and Price moved in. The Captain held Soap by his nape, weaving his fingers into the fur of his Sergeant’s hackles, and pulled him forward to gently buss their cheeks. Letting his injured pack-member nuzzle up under his chin, a purr kicking on in Price's chest as Soap licked at his jaw, little plaintive whimpers creeping from his throat. Begging for comfort from his pack-leader.

A snarl from Gaz, and Ghost bulling forward to wrap himself protectively around his Mate, drew Price away from soothing his distressed pack-member and he glanced up to see Gaz hassling a woman that had dared step within two metres of their little reunion. Clearing his throat of the growl bouncing around his back teeth and forcibly smoothing down his raised hackles, Price stepped forward.

“Gaz, let her through, Soap needs a medic,” The pack-lead’s demand made Gaz waver and his snarl cool into an upset growl, but his instincts were still loudly demanding he stay between the unknown and his vulnerable pack.

“Garrick.” Price snarled, and Gaz reluctantly stepped aside with a temperamental yowl, following along at the woman’s heels until they passed Price and the Captain scruffed him. Price snarled against Gaz's ear until the growling faded into the distraught whines Price knew had been hiding underneath. He bussed their cheeks until Gaz calmed down, then released the Sergeant to return to his circling of their little huddle.

Possessive muppet that he was.

Ghost had let Soap be sat down on the closest flat surface, but was hovering about like a deranged hummingbird that thought the medic was made of sugar-water. Drawing him away from breathing down the poor woman’s neck, Price tried to get him to calm down, before he sent himself into a meltdown. Turning him away when he kept craning his head to stare at Soap and getting himself worked up again.

A yelp from the medic and spinning to find her knelt beside a Soapless box threw that idea straight out the window.

“What happened?” Price demanded, doing nothing to dissuade Ghost and Gaz from gnarring down at the woman that had lost their pack-member.

“I- I- I-” The woman stuttered.

Gaz impatiently lunged at her and the woman yelped, holding up her hands to ward him off, blushing indignantly when he stopped short and Ghost snickered at her flinch.

“I don’t know,” she barked at them, boldly pushing to her feet, “I looked away for two seconds and when I looked back he was gone!”

Derisive snorts in triplicate met her defense and the pack dismissed her to convene amongst themselves.

“He’s hiding,” Gaz guessed, “Like when he was delirious last November and refused to come out from under his bed,”

“But where the fuck did he go?” Ghost barked,

“Calm down,” Price mitigated, “If he’s in a headspace like that, he can’t have gotten far. Simple search pattern, Ghost you’ll-”

The pack froze as a small hurting whimper came from tauntingly near. Spinning in place to scan for the source, they looked ready to decide the fate of the Hanukkah gelt upon their stop.

The whimper sounded again from direction of the trees and they booked it, nearly sprinting straight past where Soap had curled himself up at the base of the nearest tree thick enough to cover his back.

“Johnny,” Ghost rumbled, bending to pick up his Mate, whining apologetically when lifting him jolted a pained yelp out of him, “You can’t hide away right now, we gotta get you fixed first.”

Ghost carried his Mate the few metres back to the medic and eased himself down to sit on the box before her, holding Johnny firmly in his lap. With Gaz pacing protectively around them again, Price came forward to gently hold Soap’s leg in place for the medic to access, and when Johnny’s urges to flee overcame him, Ghost was happy to let him bury his face into Ghost’s neck to hide.
