Reading the reactions to the Minecraft movie trailer has caused me to start thinking, so I'm gonna lay some points down that have been brewing in my mind.
1. Minecraft Story Mode is not that good
You guys are acting like prequel fans. Stop before you morph into r/Prequelmemes
2. This has Marvel Director Syndrome attached to it
The director of this movie is Jared Hess, who's well known for Napoleon Dynamite (2004) and Nacho Libre (2006). This probably explains Jack Black being in this (he starred in Nacho Libre and was going to be in Napoleon Dynamite as Rex). My theory on why is probably an attempt to pull the millennial market in by saying, "Look! It's the director of your favorite goofy indie move!" Think Eternals (2021), which had Chloé Zhao direct after already making Nomandland (2020), which won Best Picture for the 2020 awards, in what I assume is an attempt to bring in a more serious crowd.
3. The End Poem is neat, but really doesn't fit modern Minecraft anymore
Yeah, it's cool and goes hard, but it just... really doesn't fit the game anymore? It's hard to explain, but the End doesn't really feel like a goal anymore, unlike the older versions, where that was the big thing being built up. Now you have 50 thousand different things to do that make you think, "Why bother?" once it comes to the End. So the poem isn't really a thing to think about anymore.
4. This is literally just one of those unlicensed novels from the 2010's
You know what I'm talking about, so, um, congrats for sticking to A source material, I guess.
5. Of fucking course it's not gonna be what you want, that isn't profitable :(
There was no way in hell this would be the "deep, reflective experience" you guys keep clamoring for. That shit only really happens with indies, and Minecraft is WAY TOO PROFITABLE as a franchise to even be considered for one. That leaves us with an attempt that was always gonna be existing to solely capitalize on the 8-12 year old demographic at best or complete slop at worst.
6. Probably won't be as bad as you guys are saying, tbh
Yeah, it doesn't look good, but it's just gonna be another Jumanji-type movie, and I have a high tolerance for that kind of stuff. Probably gonna be a 4-5/10 at best. Not gonna watch it (I don't go to the theater much unless it's an event or my dad decides to go, and he isn't that big of a Minecraft fan), but what can ya do :|
IN CONCLUSION
Tumblr discovers regular blockbuster movies based on popular property and is enraged at it.
Go listen to [USA] by Anamanaguchi now. You'll thank me later.

U know what?
This year's Oscar isn't broadcasted in Hong Kong for the first time ever. Probably because Chloe Zhao said from her real life experience that China is a place full of lies. And also the documentary about Hong Kong's protests in 2019 "Do Not Split" is nominated.
🤣🤣🤣

Jane Campion with her DGA award for Outstanding Feature for The Power of the Dog.
The Directors Guild of America awards are voted on by working television and film directors belonging to the guild. Campion, who was previously nominated for the DGA for Outstanding Feature for The Piano, is only the 3rd woman to have won in the guild’s history following Kathryn Bigelow (The Hurt Locker) and Chloé Zhao (Nomandland).

Eternals
This film combines 3 of my least favourite things about films. Too many characters thrown into the mix, a bloated plot and an unnecessarily long running time. There are also many more issues with Eternals, but those are the key ones that make this a really dull affair.
Basically, because it’s a really long winded story that seems to take an age to tell us with various flash backs, this God type creature called Arishem create 10 super beings called Eternals. They land on Earth and help to mould the world as we see it today. There one rule is they cannot interfere with human wars, only if the evil Deviants are involved. I know, it’s a pretty shoddy excuse. Overtime, the group split up with all the Deviants being defeated, and our story begins with Sersei and Sprite, two of the Eternals living in London, trying to lead normal lives. However, a Deviant returns and Sersei and Sprite track down the rest of the Eternals to find out what is happening.
Tumblr media
Eternals feels very different to previous Marvel films, it feels more character driven, less action based than others. Part of this is probably down to the direction of Chloe Zhao, director of Nomandland, which is a very low budget, simple movie. You can certainly see her style in Eternals, and whilst this isn’t a bad thing, I do think the beauty of her direction gets lost in the actual story. The film engulfs her style which is a shame because I think in the more subtle moments is where there is some quality in the film. I think this would have been more effective if the movie was a standalone, and not a big character introducing film like Eternals. There are some fairly decent performances from Barry Keoghan and Lauren Rindloff, who is Marvels first deaf character, it is great seeing representation and because Lauren is deaf, it adds to the authenticity of this. It doesn’t feel forced and it was to see this.
Tumblr media
For the most part, it was a bit of a mess. There was far too much explaining with what was going on and who people were. It wasn’t complicated to understand what the general idea was, but there was so much explaining, it was a bit tiresome. There were too many characters and although its a comic and it is trying to stick for the source it does dent the pacing of the film. We end up getting a backstory or explanation into each character and I’m not that invested in them because it is in an Avengers type story. Before Avengers, we got origin stories of most of the characters so when they came together we didn’t need the tedious character development. Unfortunately, there isn’t a great amount of character development in this at all.
2/5 Unfortunately, this doesn’t work. It’s a shame because I think there is an effort to try and move away from a typical Marvel movie with Zhao’s direction, but because this is a Marvel movie it can’t fully escape the shackles that it has on these bloated movies. I can’t believe how much more of this I’ll end up watching.

'Eternals': Chloe Zhao brings her unique style of directing to the Marvel Cinematic Universe
‘Eternals’: Chloe Zhao brings her unique style of directing to the Marvel Cinematic Universe
LOS ANGELES — Chloe Zhao won the Oscar for best director for “Nomandland” last spring. She’s taken a full turn for her latest movie and jumped into the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the new adventure, “Eternals.” Salma Hayek stars in the ensemble adventure and said she felt working with Zhao was “nirvana.” “She has a strong vision, a clear vision. She is very good technically but also has great…

Zhao and Nomandland won their respective categories and that's all I cared about tonight.
Although, I will say this: Hopkins' win would've been better revived if Actor wasn't the LAST CATAGORY.
