This guy is a Gum-Leaf Skeletoniser, and they wear their old heads as a hat each time they molt because why not.

Two large Sarrothripini moths.
Possibly in the Blenina genus, but there's a few Sarrothripini moths like this. The species B. donans has a wide range of varying wing patterns, making it difficult to really pin-point ID. B. donans seems like a possible ID, but I'm not too sure.
13/01/24 - Sarrothripini sp.

Manoba major
“Manoba major (Hampson, 1891), to MV light, Merimbula, NSW, 7/8 November 2010. A long way south, and some distance from the nearest mangroves, but the markings fit this species and none of the Nola species.” - via Wikimedia Commons

Nolid Moths (Ariolica sp., Ariolicini, Chloephorinae, Nolidae)
Unknown whether the difference is gender, species, or a pattern morph. They can occasionally occur side-by-side and in mixed populations in daytime spottings.

do you know who this friend is? they were spotted in japan and I'm making this id request on the behalf of a twitter user. hopefully the photo isn't too blurry/low quality since I had to take a screenshot from the video they posted :')
The closest match I could find is an Ailanthus defoliator, Eligma narcissus. So if it's not that, I'd say it's almost certainly another moth in the same family, Nolidae.

MAD HATTERPILLAR
(Uraba lugens)
Nuytsia@Tas, 2009. “Totempole head - Uraba lugens”
South Arm, Tasmania
If you’re even slightly familiar with Lewis Carroll’s novels, the mad hatterpillar (or gum leaf skeletoniser) won’t need much of an explanation. Adult skeletonisers are quite unassuming looking moths, but the larvae owe their nickname to the tower of head capsules retained from each instar following ecdysis. The role these hats of heads play isn’t clear, though a study by behavioural ecologist Petah Low et al. suggests a defensive function. They’re wrong.
It’s fashion.

Big headed baby ! 🚼 • ( Nolidae caterpillar ) 🐛 * Nolidae is a family of moths with about 1,700 described species worldwide. They are mostly small with dull coloration, the main distinguishing feature being a silk cocoon with a vertical exit slit. The group is sometimes known as tuft moths, after the tufts of raised scales on the forewings of two subfamilies, Nolinae and Collomeninae. The larvae also tend to have muted colors and tufts of short hairs. #pratheepvijay #pratheepvijayphotography #nolidae #nolidaecaterpillar #moth #silkcocoon #tuftmoth #nolinae #wild #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifephotographer #collomeninae #larva #larvae #bighead #bigheadcaterpillar #saveinsects #insect #macro #shotoniphone #nature #bbcearth #natgeo #animalplanet #discovery #instagood #photography #picoftheday #photooftheday @natgeo @natgeoindia @natgeowild @natgeotravel @natgeoyourshot @natgeotravellerindia @natgeoadventure @natgeointhefield @natgeofineart @natgeoasia @natgeochannel @natgeoexpeditions @natgeo.la @natgeonl @natgeolatam @natgeoencounter @natgeodocs @animalsdoingthings @animalplanet @animalplanetindia @animalaid_india @animalhopeandwellness @discovery @discoverychannelin @discoveryplusindia @discover @discoveryla @grikart_macro @macro_delight @apple @instagram @wholelottabugs @insectguru @naturein_focus @nature_org @wildkarnataka @wildtakes @wildlifeplanet @world_wildlife @incredibleindia @bbcearth @earth @sonybbcearth @natural_history_museum @earthalliance @earthroamer @incredibleindia @macro_brilliance @nature @nature_brilliance @lonelyplanet @ourplanet @lightroom @kumudamonline @bbcwildlifemagazine @asiangeographic @naturesbestphotomagazine @discoverindia.magazine @wildlifeindia @zealwildlifecentral @fwdlife_magazine @climbingmagazine @lonelyplanetmagazineindia @thecaravanmagazine @wildlifesos (at Pudukkottai/tamilnadu) https://www.instagram.com/p/CSLtsReB__S/?utm_medium=tumblr
