Not a Substitute for the Past

I have to push back against a particular take in Teen Wolf fandom that I feel is not only inaccurate but also a symptom of damaging behaviors in fandom.

Liam is not a Mini-Jackson and Mason is certainly not Danny-Lite.

Saying that Liam and Mason are some sort of cheap replacements for Jackson and Danny is to flatten their characters so much as to be unrecognizable. Of course, they are both best-friend duos, but there were literally four other 'best-friend duos' showcased in the production: Scott and Stiles; Allison and Lydia; Sebastian and Marcel; and Gabe and Nolan. Of them, Scott and Stiles are the most important; all the others, in their significantly different dynamics, serve to examine that relationship.

To me, the only thing that Liam and Jackson have in common is that they're white lacrosse stars. You would have to get rid of all their other character development in order to make the claim that Liam was a replacement for Jackson.

Jackson starts out as a rich, popular sports star, the captain of the lacrosse team, who strides through the halls of BHHS with the adoration of his peers, a smoking hot girlfriend, and protective and involved parents. As the seasons progress, we discover he has issues which spring from his learning that he was adopted and that his biological parents died on the night he was born. Jackson internalized this exterior tragedy, resulting in an impostor syndrome so strong that it had supernatural consequences. Because of this, he's insecure about his own value, and he reacts by being jealous, obsessive, and mean, frequently crossing the line into cruel. While his parents obviously care about him, he keeps them at arm's length. His relationship with Lydia is toxic; even though it's shown that both of them care about each other, it's too often mixed up with the false fronts they put up in order to maintain their status.

In contrast, Liam is younger, but he's definitely not popular. He's insecure, but this doesn't come from an exterior tragedy but a mental disorder: his I.E.D. His inability to cope with it effectively (which to Teen Wolf's credit is never shown as a moral deficiency) has lead to him being expelled from his former school, having an antagonistic relationship with his former coach and the entire Devenford lacrosse team, and having created Hayden as his nemesis. None-the-less, his relationship with his parents is strong, as far as we can tell and in contrast to Jackson. Dr. Geyer is a very good stepfather; we see that in Muted (4x03). Liam doesn't allow his insecurity to make him resent his parents; instead, he is driven to prove himself worthy of their love (which there is no indication that they would withhold). He doesn't have Jackson's status but he wants it, and while he can be stubborn, aggressive and competitive, he doesn't exhibits signs of jealousy or any willingness to hurt others to get what he wants. While he can lash out in anger, he's seldom mean and never cruel.

In addition, their relationships to the lead protagonist are very different, and that is NOT incidental. At the beginning of the show, Jackson's surface persona represents everything Scott aspires to (popularity, a girlfriend, to be seen and recognized) only for him to discover the hollowness beneath that facade. Then, in Season 4, Liam represents everything Scott has been forced to leave behind (the ability to be angry, the right to focus on himself, being taken care of rather than taking care of others, etc.). In the end, Liam isn't a replacement for Jackson because they don't serve the same function in the narrative.

To me, Danny and Mason are both gay -- though the idea that there is a designated gay character is so Eighties -- and they're both minorities -- which is just as Eighties -- but the very nature of their roles within their best-friend duos are vastly different.

Danny is Jackson's best friend on the lacrosse team, despite Jackson often being aggressive and sometimes even hostile toward him ("kind of always at a four"). Danny obviously cares but seems undisturbed by Jackson's more aggressive behavior, though he will push back if he thinks Jackson goes too far. Throughout the seasons, Danny exists in proximity to the supernatural goings-on, yet he manages to keep a distance even with several near misses, so much so that the audience was surprised that he had figured out Ethan's nature. It's not fear of danger; he can be transgressive when he wants to be. Danny manages people by drawing boundaries and respecting those boundaries in others.

On the other hand, Mason becomes far more active in Liam's supernatural life, and it's not because Liam doesn't try to keep him out of it. Mason is curious and involved, and he "wants to help." In fact, his desire to be there for Liam, in my opinion, often leads to Mason enabling Liam in his actions. When he meets the rest of the pack he's immediately willing to engage with them and help them out. He doesn't even hesitate to start the second-longest-lasting relationship in the show with the chimera Corey. Mason allows himself to be far more vulnerable in his relationship with Liam and with the supernatural in question, as compared to Danny's reticence. Another thing I appreciate is that neither approach toward friendship is shown as 'better' than the other. They're just different! (which is the point of this meta).

It will help if you think about these parallel scenes. In Venomous (2x06) Jackson and Danny are working out, and Danny remarks that Jackson is trying to lift far too much weight. Jackson snaps that he doesn't need a spotter, and Danny shrugs and leaves. "I'm hitting the shower. If I come back and you're lying dead underneath a pile of weight, I'm taking the Porsche." Danny still cares, but he's not going to let Jackson get under his skin. In A Promise to the Dead (4x11), the scene is recreated with Liam and Mason. Liam, rather than being consumed by disappointment like Jackson was, is trying to cope with his fear of the Berserkers. Mason, rather than leaving with a quip like Danny, stands there hurt by Liam's behavior. Scott has to caution Liam about pushing his friends away.

Same situation, different motivations from each character involved, demonstrating how while they might be best friends they act in the context of that friendship in different ways. Liam is running away from the possibilities of the supernatural, while Jackson is running toward them. Danny is willing to respect Jackson's boundaries while still caring for him, while Mason is hurt by his inability to help a clearly distressed friend. These difference help demonstrate Scott's evolving role in his peer group and his own growing skills in leadership. He is in a position to help Liam and Mason in a way he wasn't able to help Jackson and Danny.

Liam and Mason are not replacements for Jackson and Danny. Even if Jackson and Danny were present in season 4 through 6, they couldn't possibly have the same relationship with Scott because they were very different people.

Names are very special in my family, it is a tradition that parents will pass on their names to their children. My middle name Raoul was passed from my papa and his papa, and if I have a son, it will be passed on to him. I live in a place called Ardèche in southern france. We live on a farm very close to the capitol Privas and I go to public school there. It is a small town, not like California or America, but it is very pretty and I enjoy living in the countryside. Most of my family live with us on the farm, with the exception of my cousins who moved to Paris when I was six. They visit us every year for celebrations and bring us presents. Last month they brought me some popular english books, maybe you have read them too? Twilight by Stephenie Meyer, The Hunger games by Suzanne Collins, Paper Towns by John Green.

Most fascinating to me personally is how this shows not only what an iron grip Sterek has on the fic space, but also when the bulk of the Sterek fics were written/take place, since Erica and Boyd having that many more fics than anyone from S3 onward, plus Chris and Melissa? Bizarre to see. Also, I'm not sure why the Steiners are so dramatically underrepresented in fics. I get they aren't Hales, but still...

And yes, you are reading that correctly, Cora, with her 7 proper episodes of screentime and extremely little characterization (not to mention using what little she had to be unlikeable), has that many fics where she's involved. She almost rivals Melissa, who was in ten times as many episodes. (71, to be precise, according to IMDB)

the rookie thoughts (kinda controversial)

first of all i have to say, i am an international viewer, and i just found out about the rookie a couple of weeks ago through youtube shorts, and knew i had to watch it when i saw clips of chenford.

i stand with the term ACAB through and through, and i am all for defunding the police, because unfortunately i have had my own terrible experiences with cops, even if not within the US. but come on, social media has proven once again, no matter which country or nation ALL COPS ARE BASTARDS.

so i when i found out the rookie was a cop show, i was very wary. i hate copaganda and no show or no media would ever be able to change my mind about cops being good people (still is true). but then i keep seeing these clips of chenford and i just fell in love with them. i don't know why and what about their dynamic is so attractive to me, maybe the slowburn, the black cat and golden retriever, the cold and sunshine, the yapper and the listener, the broody guy outside but a big softie on the inside and the hopeless romantic girlie?? so i decided to start watching it for the sake of Lucy Chen and Tim Bradford. let me tell you, i fell into a rabbit hole. i have never felt this way about a ship ever since middle school when i shipped dramione and sterek (both unattainable ships and not cannon btw) so imagine the euphoria of knowing chenford is canon. i truly fell in love with them, and i forgot how much happy hormones fangirling over your favorite character gives you.

i was in a bad place, and chenford and the rookie had my back, honestly.

i have to applaud the writers because they're able to make us - or me, at the very least- be invested into the lives of the ensemble of characters. let me tell you, i have been an avid series watcher ever since middle school, when my coping mechanism to weird thoughts and ideations (if you get what im saying) was to enjoy shows and hyperfixate on them so my brain gets distracted from the realities of life, and there are always characters i don't like, or characters i don't care about, or i skip over because i think they're a waste of my time, but the rookie truly made me care for and love each of the character. and i think that's a really tough thing to do.

now im new to the fandom (and honestly i dont plan to invest much time into being in the fandom anyways because being in a fandom is very exhausting and time consuming to me and i don't know if i've got that kind of energy like i had when i ran harry potter and teen wolf accounts when i was in middle school. i think i prefer to just be a fan of the show and just watch the fandom from afar but occasionally will have a couple of inputs or rants), so im familiar with people saying they hate nolan and why is the show focused too much on nolan (which... i mean the show did start out being centered around him) etc etc, which i felt the same way too when i watched s1, but truly, i have even grown fond of nolan too... and that's miracle work done by the writers, baby

i think my favorites are season 2-3 even if season 3 unfortunately got rushed by the circumstances back then (pandemic) s1 was good too in terms of plot, but my chenford heart couldn't take seeing nolan and lucy ewww. and of course i loved s5 bcs of chenford but the plot could have been better.

so those are a couple of things i think the showrunners/writers should be applauded for, now for constructive criticism... i feel the show never truly acknowledges that most if not all cops are bad (even if they insist that there are always good ones), they always scratch the surface or barely spend enough time to go deep within this topic, which i think is crucial as a cop show rather than just doing it for the sake of "woke agenda" (which i felt was their goal in s3)

you know when women say "i hate men" and men always say "not all men" and we as women would say "sure not all men, but it's always a man" i feel like it's always that kind of back and forth with The Rookie. if you are not or have never been the one being assaulted by the police, if you are not or have never been a victim of the corrupt law enforcement, if you have never felt the corruption and unfairness of law enforcement, who are you to say otherwise?

when i say and think ACAB, i mean it. even the most noble of cops for example tim bradford has been corrupted by the system due to work politics (S6) or maybe even when he was blatantly being prejudice in the pilot episode towards hispanic men (S1)??

i also think just putting poc with tragic backgrounds for main characters, to show why they want to do police work to be on the good side of things is NOT enough! that's like not even the bare minimum...

i honestly think the Professor Fiona arc was getting good, and they almost went somewhere with it, until it didn't continue in season 4 and never was even acknowledged again.

they barely scratched the surface, and im sure if the George Floyd case (may his soul rest in peace) hadn't been exposed, they woud have never even graze the topic of crooked cops

with that being said, the writers did a great job with doug stanton, because i truly wanted to punch him in the face repeatedly whenever he came on.

so what's the conclusion? i think the rookie is great when it comes to the main characters and their respective plots or character developments! but still really terrible at showing the reality of cops! because ACAB!

but i think i do understand that in the end all of this is fictional, and is a sort of getaway, but no matter how fictional, because of the coverage and platform the rookie has as a network tv show, that's also on hulu, it's important to dive deep into the realities that cops are bastards and how it has affected the lives of millions of innocent people. i think it would be the least they could do.

for me, i fully am aware that my stance on cops contradicts my love for the characters. but that's the thing, two things can be true. i still hate the police, but i love the rookie esp chenford as a ship! i guess in a sense, the rookie is a sort of guilty pleasure, and i really do hope the writers/showrunners do better on this topic so i wont feel ashamed when someone asks me what is my current fav show and i say it's a cop show.

anyways, ACAB! DEFUND THE POLICE! BLACK LIVES MATTER!

Teen Wolf Preferences #5 -- You're a Wereleopard (Part 2)

Requested by anon: Can you do a continuation of the Wereleopard!reader headcanons with Brett Talbot, Corey Bryant, and Nolan please? No one else has done these headcanons and I LOVE THEM!!!

Brett Talbot

Brett could smell something different about you, something foreign and powerful and...seductive?

No, nope, he definitely wasn’t thinking that way about someone who was friends with Liam Dunbar for God’s sake

But when you quirked an eyebrow at him and smirked, he was pretty sure you knew that flash of impure thought he’d had

So while Scott talked to the gathering of werewolves and other supernatural beings, Brett stared at you

And you sat there, smirking and smug

He swore he was going to lose it when you stretched, arching your back and showing a strip of skin below your shirt

What was happening to him??

No girl had ever caught his attention so quickly

After the meeting, Brett was torn between going to talk to you and leaving to try and save some of his pride

You sauntered over to him before he could decide

“See something you like?” you asked

You’d thought it was going to be a simple game of cat and mouse, where you’d get to sink your teeth into your prey and then discard him like all the others

But Brett wasn’t a mouse

“I’ve seen better,” he said

The corners of your lips turned down, your eyes narrowing

This wasn’t the game

“I’ll see you around, sweetheart,” he said, his words dripping condescension 

You fumed, too distracted to even hear that Brett’s heart was still racing even as he walked away

The two of you ran into each other a few times after at various meetings

Brett had done some asking around and found out you were a wereleopard, so he was slightly more prepared for your antics

But still, every time you saw each other, the flirting seemed to turn up a notch, the teasing hit a little harder

It reached a new high the night of the Devenford Prep-Beacon Hills lacrosse game

He’d spotted you in the bleachers as soon as he stepped on the field (not that he was trying to find you)

You were wearing tight shorts (were those even allowed??) and someone’s jersey (which definitely wasn’t allowed in Brett’s mind)

Brett definitely did not immediately scan the field and see whose it was

It was Liam’s

And you definitely had not worn it on purpose to see if you could rile him up

But if you had: mission accomplished

Brett was an animal on the field, scoring 6 goals himself and a number of assists, propelling Davenport to a 20-7 victory

You didn’t like how many times he slammed into Liam, but you were a big fan of how he looked when he was all sweaty

And then when he took his shirt off after the game

!!!!

But you played it cool when you came down the bleachers, first checking in with Liam, Stiles, Scott, and Kira, and waiting for Brett to start looking at you

You felt his eyes after only a few seconds

But you made him wait a minute or two before you turned to him and smiled, deceptively innocent

He came to you like a moth to a flame

You smelled his sweat and warmth and lust

And you couldn’t stop yourself from smirking

“You sure you still want to wear that loser’s jersey?” he asked, reaching a hand out to pinch the fabric between his fingers

Your eyes sparkled with mischief. “You don’t think I look good in it?”

Brett met your gaze. “You’d look better with it off.”

And then you had him, the cat had caught her mouse

Or maybe the dog had caught the cat?

It was hard to tell who was in control, but neither one of you ever stopped fighting for it

Not after a steamy hook-up in the backseat of his truck, where he asked you out and you pretended to have to think it over; not after that first date, where you thought he’d kiss you goodnight and he’d only smirked; and not after the first year together, where neither of you wanted to admit that you were in love, but you both knew you were

Oh, you really couldn’t have asked for a better lab partner than Corey Bryant

The poor boy was putty in your hands, and the blush that filled his cheeks when you gave him a compliment (even a small one) always had you going back for more

One time you ran a hand along his jacket while you complimented him and he couldn’t speak for nearly five minutes

You loved it

But as senior year crept along and supernatural events picked up around town, Corey began to change

It was little things at first: asking you to wash the beakers, telling you directions, looking you in the eye after a flirtatious comment

You bristled against it initially

Who did he think he was, growing a backbone against a wereleopard? He was only a human

Or was he?

Because you’d started to notice a change in his scent (not that you’d paid a lot of attention to it -- this wasn’t serious, you were just flirting) 

But the new smell was so faint and so unusual for supernatural creatures, almost seeming to change every second, that you couldn’t be sure

And what if he was just a normal human? What then? How did you feel about him challenging you more?

You hated it

(Although you did kind of like seeing Corey’s confidence grow, whether aided by powers or not)

But as quickly as it had happened, Corey seemed to fold back into the shadows again

He came to class pale, with dark shadows under his eyes, and he smelled scared

Not that you were concerned or anything

You just went to Scott McCall to make sure he, as the True Alpha in town, knew that something sketchy might be going on

And after learning about the Dread Doctors you only offered to help because you’re a wereleopard, the strongest, smartest, fastest supernatural creature around

“And the most humble,” Stiles had muttered

You’d winked and he’d gone wide-eyed, looking around frantically, but all you could think about was how Corey would have reacted instead

Would he still blush at something as small as a wink? Would he smile that sweet, boyish grin of his?

Now armed with the knowledge of Corey being a Chimera, you’d taken it upon yourself to be his bodyguard

And also test out what exactly his powers were

Was he stronger than you???

Well, as you found out in the Beacon Hills High School weight room, he could bench press 360 pounds

Easily

You weren’t sure if you should be bitter or turned on

Or both

“Thanks, Y/N, for helping. I know this isn’t something you’d normally do,” Corey said as he sat on the bench

You smirked (you didn’t really know how to smile) and leaned against a nearby squat rack, “I wouldn’t miss an opportunity to spend time with my favorite Chimera.”

There was that blush

And the boyish grin

And Corey looking at you shyly through his eyelashes

Were you blushing too?

“Do you think...Do you think I might be the Dread Doctors’ success?” he asked. “I just mean because I’m only getting stronger. And I’m healing faster.” Corey looked up at you nervously, then back down to the ground. “Nevermind, I don’t know--”

“I think you’re a success,” you said before you could stop yourself. You pushed yourself away from the squat rack and reached Corey’s bench in a few graceful steps. Slowly sitting next to him, you added, “I don’t know what the Dread Doctors are planning, but I think you check every box.” And then, because he wasn’t responding, just staring at you, red-cheeked and beautiful, you said again, “I think you’re a success, Corey.”

His kiss was nervous and excited and, underneath it all, dominant

When you both finally needed to pull away, Corey was the first to speak

“I like your smile.”

And you were smiling, because Corey was smiling too and you felt happy, not proud from teasing some guy, not accomplished because you made someone flustered, not superior because you were supernatural

You were just

Ok some S6b Teen Wolf notes (I’m only on S6 Episode: 12)

1: The change from 6a to 6b is so jarring

2: 6a would’ve been a significant ending I mean I even cried when Stiles gave away his Jeep and crap.

3: For Stiles Lovers you head on over to 6b and there’s NO FUCKING STILES (Sorry I’m biased I love him sm also I know he had an injury atm)

4: We have Scott 2.0 which isn’t a problem but I just don’t feel like I know Liam at all still. I know Mason better than Liam so I just don’t feel like I have an attachment to his character.
