Luego, emprendió una revista de barrio en Floresta, llamada “Floresta Si”, y pasó a trabajar en una empresa de seguros escaneando fotos de accidentes. Fue en IBM, como ejecutivo de cuentas, donde Nicolás sintió que iniciaba su carrera profesional, adquiriendo conocimientos y experiencia en el mundo corporativo. En 2004, decidió dar un paso más allá y fundó su primera empresa, que aún existe, Consultores 400, dedicada a alquilar servidores y mantener centros de cómputos en Argentina. Este emprendimiento le permitió aprender las bases de la creación y gestión de una empresa, además de introducirlo en el mundo de la tecnología. Su carrera lo llevó a España, donde se unió a Futurlink, una empresa que revolucionó el marketing de proximidad a través de la tecnología Bluetooth. Allí, comenzó como comercial y terminó como director de ventas. Más tarde, llevó la marca a Argentina y se convirtió en dueño de la licencia en el país, trabajando con marcas como Nokia y Adidas, instalando las antenas en estaciones de tren, plazas y estadios de fútbol. De vuelta en Argentina, Nicolás fundó Smart Interactive, una empresa que desarrollaba aplicaciones móviles durante el auge de las apps. Soñé que era alumno de bachillerato y fui a preguntarle cosas a la maestra de matemáticas. Habían muchos alrededor de su escritorio, era algo sobre ángulos; pero era raro, era diferente, no recuerdo alguna vez haber visto un tema así. De pronto todos se fueron de su escritorio pero yo estaba interesado en seguir aprendiendo. Muchos se empezaron a ir del salón y decían que nos dejarían solos a nosotros dos. Hacian insinuaciones de que me gustaba y a mí me daba pena. 

En otra parte del sueño yo estaba en la calle haciendo ejercicio, corriendo; se me hacía muy corto el camino pero ahí seguía. Encontré una plaza en la que me la pasé corriendo de aquí para allá. Veía los mismos empleados en sus locales u oficinas; a veces estaban interesados en venderme sus productos (viajes, etc.) de manera muy amable, otras veces estaban comiendo, otras veces hacian lo suyo de estar en su oficina. Tenían rostros muy raros, humanos pero como máscaras, como más grandes. Quizá deformes. Yo seguía dando vueltas.

Estaba en casa, era temprano y me metí a ver blogs de Tumblr (jajaja). Encontré un blog con fondo azul con onditas de agua y había puesto un reblog o quizá había escrito sobre el blog de AXX. Al final de ese post había una foto de AXX (rostro de frente, no sé que expresión era pero traía un saco blanco) y luego entré a su blog y no había nada de eso. No aparecía nada de esa fecha (nov. 5 o 7, o oct. 17; una fecha así, más o menos recuerdo). Pensé que podría hacer algo para entrar de manera diferente, usando otro internet… y me conecté por medio de una red de Nokia (como por uno de esos celulares viejos) pero se me estaba complicando todo. Me quedé con la duda de por qué ellos sí podían ver ese contenido y yo no.

Después  estaba con M y cerramos unas puertas de un lugar que parecía estar lleno de escombros. Era de noche. Parecía que cerrabamos con un cerco de púas. Mencionó algo de que estarían los anuncios en francés o árabe, y de cómo eran personalizados para mi localidad. Me decía sobre cómo aprovechaban ese sitio para sus beneficios de manera muy astuta. Él siempre habla de cosas así. 

Luego él se adelantó por esa calle oscura y nos acompañaba un perro chihuahua. De pronto se puso muy alterado y me empezó a ladrar, podía ver sus colmillos. Yo trataba de calmarlo llamándolo por su nombre y pensé que sería buena idea alumbrarlo con la linterna del celular. Él seguía ladrando, nunca me reconoció.

Hello there! Could you tell us more about the time that Die visited you in the hospital? of course, if you are confortable in sharing this! I remember seeing a video of the backstage with a fan that Die visited at the hospital!

No problem! In August of 2010 when I was 15 I had a brain injury (my brain was bleeding; don't recommend) and I was suppose to see DEG in concert when they were touring with Apocalyptica but of course I couldn't as I was in the hospital so my mom actually wrote to the band or I guess whoever was handling the tour.

She actually went to the concert and got a signed shirt for me. Someone at Nokia Theatre recognized her as the person who wrote to them and... well I'm not sure what happened after that but the next day (I think) Die came to visit me in the hospital. I don't remember that at all because I was in a coma but the next year I was contacted by two women who work closely with DEG, Natsuko and Reina, and they asked if I would like to be interviewed to be in the Age Quod Agis DVD and of course I said yes.

They gave me free VIP tickets and backstage passes and I met the band minus Kyo in New York after the show at Irving Plaza. I am forever grateful for what they did for me and I'll continue to support this band for as long as they stay active. I even have three tattoos dedicated to them haha

Sorry if this was really long winded. You can find a picture of me and Die in the hospital here you're curious (fair warning: I was in a coma when that picture was taken so if you're sensitive to stuff like that please don't click the link). I don't have the crazy afro hair anymore and I am doing much better; I'm engaged to a great guy and I've recently earned my second degree. I'm open about sharing this story with anyone who asks but I always feel like I'm coming off as bragging.

Modern Arcana AU HCs Part 4: Muriel Edition

Modern Vesuvia is a sprawling Metropolis, busy with throngs people doing too many things. Getting coffee, going to work, sightseeing, shopping, living their busy lives.

It plays host to seemingly endless rush-hour traffic, packed and thriving shopping districts, exploding with life and activity, and bloated with modern conveniences, a network of glowing LED screens connecting each citizen to each other in perpetuity.

But as you drive south, the city seems to dwindle before your eyes; skyscrapers and plazas give way to trees and fields dotted here and there with little houses until it is just winding roads lined by tall trees, until four lanes become two, then become one, until tarmac is replaced by gravel, gravel replaced by dirt.

The hum of the city is now a faint murmur, deafened by the rustle of leaves and a breeze like warm breath on the back of your neck. Beyond the hills and trees, across a small but vivacious stream winding its way through the foliage is a cabin.

In this cabin is Muriel. If you’re lucky enough for him to consider you a friend (by which I mean, extremely lucky) he might make you a cup of tea he plucked and dried from his own garden and tell you a few things about himself.

He built his cabin from the ground up with nothing but his own two hands and it is a literal work of art. He constructed his own plumbing system and everything. He hasn’t bothered to figure out electricity, and instead prefers to live by the light of the sun or by the flicker of firelight.

He will tell you that he does not own the land he lives on, and neither does Vesuvia; the land gives herself to you and if you treat her right, offer her kindness, honor her in the right ways, your partnership yields abundance. He lives and will die by this philosophy. As such, his cucumbers and tomatoes are the biggest you’ve ever seen.

He grows his own food, and if he wants it, he builds it. If ever there is a supply he needs from the city, he’ll begrudgingly drive his lovingly restored pickup truck to the city and grump his way through errands until he can return home. 

Strict vegetarian. Could not imagine killing an animal for his own survival and gets a lot of his protein from eggies.

For income, he builds furniture and sells it through a few shops in the city. His craftsmanship is second to none and they fetch a decent sum.

He carved and lacquered a beautiful oak pendant for Asra in the shape of a nautilus shell. Asra stroked it reverently with his thumbs and suggested, “You could sell these pieces. I’ve a nook in the shop...” Muriel has been avoiding the profits from his merchandise in Asra’s shop for over a year now.

Does not have a social media presence at all. No Tweeters, no Facepages, no Instacram.

Refused to buy himself a phone until Asra bought him one. It was quite a compromise. Asra had a Blackberry picked out initially, then imagined Muriel’s large fingers clumsily punching the wrong tiny buttons, and defaulted to an ancient Nokia flip phone.

Muriel’s first text was to Asra. It read: “Is this thing working??? Can u hear me???”

He never quite got the hang of texting. His texts read more like letters.

“Dear Asra, hope u are doing well. I hope u like the fox I carved u and the tea leaves I dried. The mint came in really nice and full this spring. U are always welcome here at the cabin. Inanna misses u. Take care. Muriel.”

His chicken coop is built with care and every chicken luxury he can think of, and when the Spring storms come in, his cabin is overrun with clucking chickens. The storms scare them and he can’t abide having them outside. 

Of course he composts. He has his own “recipe” for composted fertilizer that he is very, very proud of.

Refuses to call it “living off the land.” He prefers, “living with the land.”

Has thought about keeping goats for the milk and entertainment. The inherent sweetness and silliness in their nature appeals to him but something about them... feels wrong.

Under this cut are 1,4k worth of tumblr!fic based on @beatrice-otter‘s If Peter Grew Up In The Folly AU that started with a single addition about how Peter being a nerdy teen around the Folly would have influenced/modernized it earlier. Only very slightly edited (because I’m drunk and it’s late).

Peter bullies Nightingale into buying a home computer ‘for work’ when he’s still a teen (‘Why can’t you use the ones at the library like everyone else?’ - Peter, taking a deep breath before launching into his prepared 10 point argumentation in favor of modernizing and digitizing the Folly - ‘No, of course I won’t put it on the web, I’ll put it on these disc. Yes there’s a diff- look. Once I’m done transcribing these, you can just put in one of these discs and key-word search whatever you need.)

Thus, ironically, and thanks to one overly nerdy teen living in the station, the Folly becomes the most technologically advanced department of the Met for a short time

(Postmartin doesn’t know if he’s supposed to be delighted or horrified, but Peter seems to know what he’s doing there, security wise, and he wouldn’t want to dampen the youth’s enthusiasm about archivism)

Turns out, Data Input doesn’t bother Peter after all, as long as it’s something he cares about, like architecture, or magic. Even if he keeps getting into forum fights with that one other guy working on the ‘Victorian Architecture’ entry. Historical brick making details aren’t extraneous!

Thomas’s not at all sure about this whole World Wide Web-Thing, especially after he had to comfort Peter over that ‘crowd sourced’ (whatever that means) encyclopedia … thing the boy likes to work on because Peter didn’t want to tell his mum someone put up an internet page full of what basically amounts to lies about her and his dad

‘It just makes me so angry, you know, because I could change it - I should change it, really, because it’s all wrong what it’s saying, but i can’t -’

He really should have seen all of this coming, then

‘How did you break a Nokia?’, Peter asks him, the first time it happens, as if brands and manufacture tell Thomas anything about how possible or impossible a feat that is. ‘Give it here, I might be able to fix it - but you did charge it this time? - How the hell did you get sand in there?’

There’s a certain relief in having Rose back him up on the ‘No Magic (At All) Before You’re Old Enough To Drink’-Rule, because Thomas knows from experience Peter doesn’t listen to him. Ever.

So Peter ropes him into his magical experiments involving proper protocols and the old lab equipment and an army of tiny calculators.

Peter’s A-levels are better in this AU, but maybe he still can’t draw, or he’s good, but not quite good enough (Uni waiting lists were invented by the devil) so he spends a year of so actually employed by the Folly as an ‘Independent Data Management Contractor’ or something ridiculous like that.

Also he might be seriously reconsidering that whole Architecture-thing. He might have prepared his application for Hendon already, actually.

‘You wanted to be an architect since you were six, Peter. Six.’ - ‘I also told you I want to be a wizard. Let me be your apprentice. Please.’

Thomas doesn’t know how to explain that what Peter was thinking of when he was six isn’t what being a wizard is, and that whatever he’s thinking of now isn’t it either. Never will be.

He tries to explain that it isn’t up to him, but to the commissioner, and that he’s doing just fine on his own.

‘Well, accidents happen?’, Peter says ‘What does the Met do when you’re not there for once?’, and Thomas can’t tell him how much he worries about that too. ‘And you’ve been working more! You said I shouldn’t try to learn because it’s all going away anyways, and now you’re working so much more then you used too.’

Thomas wants to argue that’s not true, but Peter made a graph. And what is he supposed to say when faced with that thick red ‘Number of Major Falcon Incidents per year’ line curving upwards sharply, it’s prognosis well on it’s way to a number last reached before the war.

‘It’s still not up to me.’, he says, somewhat helplessly, and with a sigh, ‘Are you sure?’

Thomas, remembering all those evenings spent reading out loud (because, damn him, he still thinks that’s a family bonding activity for all ages) of watchmen and selfish witches and truth, justice, freedom, reasonably priced love and a hard boiled egg, thinks that he really, really should have seen this coming.

So Peter spends a frustrating week or two desperately trying to create a werelight - Thomas will be damned if he lets him join up without ever proving that he’s not the rare case of absolute incompetency. But he succeeds (impressivly fast, even thought Thomas would never tell him that).

Also, turns out Peter hadn’t told Rose about his decision before already making Thomas say yes. There will be words, about that.

For now, he has two years to convince the Commissioner and the Homeoffice. He takes Peter’s charts with him.

There’s accusations of nepotism, never officially, of course, but Peter makes a game out of how many pints it takes until someone asks him if he’s really the weirdo DCI’s bastard or some such. He’d think it would pass around that he’s not, but alas, no such luck. He figures it’s the least annoying thing people can pester him about, in the end.

Peter’s not yet 22 when Thomas has to take him to the Commissioner for his pledge, and for a second there when Peter stumbles about the cloth-part (they practiced, of course, but he still always does) Thomas can’t help but think how painfully young Peter still looks to him.

Peter isn’t his boy, of course, never will be, and Thomas knows Rose made sure he knew about his dad, knew what really happened, but still he can’t shake the feeling -

He’d been scared Peter wouldn’t be up to this, but now he’s more worried he won’t be.

But Peter takes well to magic, and surprisingly even better to policing - maybe not in the way he or Neblett would like, but certainly in the way he’d scribbled a thin blue line for ‘Reported Minor Intracommunity Conflicts - DemiMonde’ into his charts and graphs from the beginning. He gets along with the Rivers, most of them, and with the Other generally in a way Thomas never could

(never, he has to admit to himself with some shame, cared too. He’d like to say Peter is just young enough, new enough to fly under their radars, but he has to admit, that’s not it. And he certainly didn’t expect this, with Peter’s history. He finds he’s glad it didn’t turn out differently.)

And when they are standing for the first time together on a deadly quiet doorstep there’s little apprehension in Peter, past the obvious tension appropriate to the occasion. And whatever there is in his eyes when Thomas hands him the phosphorous grenade, it’s not anything Thomas has to be worried about.

He’s more relieved, that evening then he’d like to admit.
