The 9th Savlar deployed tonight into an unwinnable battle: eight Imperial Guard holding, COD Zombies style, against wave upon wave of increasingly difficult and increasingly bizarrely armed enemies. A wargame, made to improve our cohesion in a context where no one could ruin someone else's evening. What we got instead was a miracle. Through a bug in the ever-stable ARMA III, one of our newer recruits ended up being entirely invulnerable. As one after another guardsman fell, and our respawn tickets ticked down to zero, we each were treated to the sight of Convict Wall-rat battling his own private war. With lasgun in one hand, and a looted plasma pistol in the other, this hero of the Imperium took every shot that came his way, and kept fighting for a full half hour after all of his fellows had fallen. Engine echoes rolled along the canyon, exhaust smoke rising over the cratered hills beyond the canyon mouth. Then, there, on the ridge line - a snarling steel effigy on fat wheels, shuddering and spitting hot oil like a beast, maddened and throthing. "Clear backblast!" she yelled, voice muffled by the chem-mask but clear as a clarion over the squad comm-net. "Area clear!" came the response. She was grim below the mask. She wore the distinctive ushanka of a Valhallan, but messhall rumours said she was a Tallarn. She said that she was at home in the Emperor's light, that the fire in her hearth was His passion, and her comforts were His fury meted out upon an unworthy foe. A long-tailed Kroot Carnivore, Convict serial 6212 callsign "Milo" was inducted into the 9th Savlar Chem-Dogs on the world of Armageddon itself. Found in the depths of the labyrinthine Underhive, Milo was originally adopted as a sort of pet by the Penal Legionaries. I'm no good at sculpting, but then again, I used to be pretty awful at painting too. The only way I'll get better is with practice, so another of the Savlar gets a turn. There are many thousands of soldiers in the Ninth Savlar, and the non-humans among them are less than a single percentage point. Another hobby of mine, one that doesn't photograph well, is modded ARMA III. I've been in a couple of 40k units, helped run a couple too, and now I'm finally able to devote the time to running my own. A few of us were online tonight playing dress up with all the strange uniforms our modlist offered us. The soldier lowers his steel mask, and threads a lho stick between lips rendered to a numb twist by ritual scarification. The sun beats, and sweat glues the low brim of his bowl helmet to his brow. He raises his lighter. He strikes the flint, but it doesn't spark. He can barely feel it in his hands. He has not felt much of anything for a very long time. Like a memory, his old, dead nerves try to twitch his face into a grimace, but the muscles are slack. His breath mists. The air is suddenly cold. His lighter, for the moment, is forgotten. The soldier is a child again, blowing steam. The sun throbs, unwavering. The rest of his fireteam are sweating bullets. His own sweat turns to ice. His breath stings his throat like a sprint in winter. His jaundiced skin loses its earthly pigment, the blood fleeing, white spreading across whatever skin is visible under his tattered uniform. A black ooze pours through his proud-standing veins. Black swirling layers through marble. His lips curl backwards over yellow teeth. Long-severed muscles tighten, heaving a rictus grin across his ashen face. A spasming, reaching hand finds the grip of his autogun, hanging on its hide strap, and the muzzle jerks upwards. The trigger finger tightens, and a prolonged burst takes the rest of his fireteam before they can even turn. Then, the light already gone from his black, blood-drowned eyes, he drops like a severed marionette. The Psyker steps over his corpse, leaning on her corposant stave, the walk a woman many times her age.
