"It does not and will not take much to mobilise antipathy against Aboriginal people and to conjure the worst imaginings about us and the recognition we seek. For those who wish to oppose our recognition, it will be like shooting fish in a barrel. An inane thing to do — but easy. A heartless thing to do — but easy." Noel Pearson

Comment:
Australia’s centre-right parties have been in disarray since the May 2022 national elections. Sustained moves to the right on climate change, lgbtiq rights, and even integrity issues saw them lose seats, especially in urban areas, to greens, to centrist ‘teal’ independents as well as to the Australian Labor Party which formed a narrow majority government.
Now, after decades of also playing wedge politics with the minority rights of Australia’s indigenous peoples reflecting ahistorical, proto-racist views, these centre-right parties led by a notorious populist conservative, Peter Dutton, have doubled down on that stance to reject a proposed direct reference and formal advisory role for indigenous folk in Australia’s written constitution known as ‘the voice’. (https://dialogue-queered.tumblr.com/post/713901890333802496/all-australians-own-the-constitution-now-we-have.) It appears the Coalition parties think they can build a majority for resentment against indigenous peoples at the very time when national reconciliation is progressing.
This formal advisory role was proposed (alongside treaty and truth-telling means for reconciliation) by a congress of indigenous peoples in 2017 that culminated in the ‘Uluru Statement from the Heart’ ( https://dialogue-queered.tumblr.com/post/713851452727197696/view-the-statement-uluru-statement-from-the.)
Noel Pearson (referenced below) was a member of this indigenous peoples congress.
A referendum to amend the constitution is proposed for late 2023.
Extract 1: The Liberal party yesterday formally resolved to oppose the referendum for a constitutionally enshrined voice to parliament, instead proposing symbolic constitutional recognition of Indigenous people along with local and regional voices set up by legislation. Symbolic constitutional recognition was rejected in the detailed consultation processes leading up to the Uluru statement from the heart, which called for a constitutionally enshrined voice.
On ABC’s AM program, Dutton claimed that the prime minister, Anthony Albanese, was “on a path to dividing the country” and that the voice would disrupt the process of government.
Extract 2: State Liberal leaders have publicly opposed the federal party’s decision, and federal MP Bridget Archer admitted she had considered quitting the party, saying her colleagues hadn’t learned the lessons of mounting election losses.
Extract 3: “Dutton sees his own political future tied up with getting this referendum to fail. This is more about his calculations about Liberal versus Labor, rather than what’s good for the country,” Pearson told ABC radio on Thursday morning.“He doesn’t mind chucking Indigenous Australians and the future of the country under the bus so he can preserve his miserable political hide.”
Pearson, one of the architects of the Uluru statement, has for years attempted to convince conservatives of the merit of the voice concept. He was scathing of Dutton’s decision, calling it “very sad”. “I couldn’t sleep last night. I was troubled by dreams and the spectre of the Dutton Liberal party’s Judas betrayal of our country,” Pearson said.“They’ve had 11 years of power to work on a proper proposal for recognition and the decision they’ve taken yesterday is a very poor outcome
I see the leader of the Liberal party, Mr Dutton, as an undertaker preparing the grave to bury [the Uluru statement].”
Extract 4: Pearson said Dutton was on a “unity ticket” with One Nation’s Pauline Hanson and former prime minister Tony Abbott, who are both campaigning against the voice.“I believe that the Liberal party is greatly out of step with the sentiment of the Australian people on this issue, and we will succeed notwithstanding their very disappointing stance,” he said.“I am certain that every attempt to try and kill Uluru and bury it will not succeed. The Australian people will rise to the historic opportunity we have to achieve reconciliation at last.”
Pearson noted the former Coalition government did not secure constitutional recognition of Indigenous people over its decade in office, despite it being part of the party’s platform.

Lowitja O’Donoghue was told as a child she would never make anything of her life, but the Yankunytjatjara leader went on to change the course of history through her advocacy for Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
Taken from her mother and her culture at two years old as one of the stolen generations, she said the harsh discipline she experienced growing up in a loveless mission home ignited her appetite for social justice and equality for First Nations communities.
The life of O’Donoghue, who has died on Kaurna Country in South Australia aged 91, was shaped by the prejudice she experienced as a woman born between two cultures – Aboriginal and white – and by her refusal to be defined by it. Her formidable capacity for activism was triggered by her battle to become the first Aboriginal nurse at the Royal Adelaide hospital, despite the matron repeatedly telling her to “go nurse your own people in Alice Springs”.
At the time, O’Donoghue had no idea where she came from, but she knew it was not Alice Springs/Mparntwe.
From a working life that began as a 16-year-old servant, O’Donoghue went on to become the first Aboriginal person named a Companion of the Order of Australia, the first to address the UN general assembly and the first chair of the now defunct Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Commission, overseeing its most successful years.
She was a lead negotiator alongside then prime minister Paul Keating in the drafting of the Native Title Act that arose from the high court’s 1992 Mabo decision. It was Keating who shortlisted O’Donoghue for a vice-regal position, one that ultimately went to Sir William Deane.
In his 2018 oration named in her honour, Noel Pearson called O’Donoghue “our greatest leader of the modern era”.
“Resolute, scolding, warm and generous – courageous, steely, gracious and fair. She held the hardest leadership brief in the nation and performed it bravely and with distinction,” he said of her guidance during native title negotiations.
O’Donoghue was the fifth child of Lily, a Yankunytjatjara woman, and Tom O’Donoghue, an Irish stockman. She was born on Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara lands at Granite Downs station in South Australia in 1932. While never certain of her birthdate, O’Donoghue celebrated it on 1 August, the date given to her by white missionaries.
“All I know about my birth is that I was actually born in the bush, like all Aboriginal children at those times. It was a traditional birth attended by the grandmothers as, of course, is the traditional way. And the only other thing I know, of course, is that I never had a birth certificate. And, of course, I still don’t have a birth certificate,” she told the Australian Biography project in 1994.
She never knew her father, and when she was two, she and two of her sisters were taken from their mother by missionaries acting on behalf of the Aborigines Protection Board. The girls were sent to live at what was known as the Colebrook Home for Half-Caste Children, where they were forbidden to speak their language or ask about the whereabouts of their parents. O’Donoghue did not see or hear from her mother again for more than 30 years. In a 2011 interview , she recalled the grief of her childhood, saying she did not remember ever “being kissed or touched or loved or anything like that”.
In a 2006 interview, she said: “I didn’t like it of course, particularly when we were told our culture was of the devil. And because I heard that too many times I became quite rebellious because I was always asking the questions: Who am I? Where did I come from?”
O’Donoghue attended Unley general technical high school, but at 16 was sent to Victor Harbour as a servant for a large family. Two years later, she began basic nursing training before attempting to transfer to the Royal Adelaide hospital to continue her education. When the matron refused her because she was Aboriginal, O’Donoghue took her battle to the state premier and anyone else in government who would listen to her case.
“I’d resolved that one of the fights was to actually open the door for Aboriginal women to take up the nursing profession, and also for those young men to get into apprenticeships,” she said in 1994.
O’Donoghue was eventually accepted and spent 10 years at the hospital, including as a charge nurse. She travelled to India to nurse, an experience that honed her determination to secure the rights of Indigenous peoples in her later senior leadership positions within various agencies of Aboriginal affairs and the public service.
While nursing at Coober Pedy in the late 1960s, O’Donoghue was recognised by a group of Aboriginal people. From them, she learned that her birth name was Lowitja, and that her mother was a heartbroken woman living in appalling conditions in Oodnadatta. When mother and daughter eventually reunited, there was tension and a language barrier. Her biographer, Stuart Rintoul, writes that she would later talk of their reunion as a lesson in the “limitlessness of hope and the strength of patience”.
O’Donoghue told the Australian Biography project that reconnecting with her Aboriginal family brought “new meaning and a whole new dimension” to her life, moving her to devote herself entirely to the wellbeing of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.
In 1979, O’Donoghue married Gordon Smart, a hospital orderly she had met in the late 1960s. He died in 1991. The couple did not have children together, as O’Donoghue chose to dedicate her life to her work.
O’Donoghue was made a Member of the Order of Australia in 1977, invested as a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1983 and made a Companion of the Order of Australia in 1999. In 1984, she was named Australian of the Year and in 2005 a Dame of the Order of St Gregory the Great, a papal award. She holds multiple honorary doctorates and fellowships and was patron of the Lowitja Institute.

Because we'll be having a referendum on this later this year and I somehow feel the need to address this at some point, I just wanted to give my thoughts about the Indigenous Voice to Parliament, which is purely my own thoughts because I haven't got the time to invest myself in the debate.
Someone please tell me why we should have an Indigenous Voice to Parliament when the Aboriginal community, at one point, felt the need to make this:
youtube
Nah come on, we can do better than reusing jokes originally intended for "Invasion Day" lol.
In all honesty, while I do believe that the government should take Indigenous voices into consideration (particularly in the remote outback), I'm not entirely sure how and to what extent the Voice will help Indigenous communities, and even if I did, I don't see why it needs to be in the Constitution. Another concern I have is that hypothetically, if there is a potential bill that could help all Australians, but the Voice committee doesn't believe that it would help the Indigenous community, then the bill might not get passed, let alone read, in Parliament because of that. Hence, for the time being, my intention will be to vote No.
You'd think I'd probably be voting Yes given that I'm a Hongkonger and things have happened over the past few years, but this is totally more than me being bitter over the world never giving Hongkongers more of a voice than we deserved.
Over the past few years I've seen the pandering to Indigenous communities gradually escalate from things like the Acknowledgement of Country to outright renaming places to their original Indigenous names out of political correctness. It happened with the City of Moreland, now City of Merri-bek, last year.
While I'll admit that it's nice to know what and whose Country I'm standing on and the same for other places, I'd be okay with the use of Indigenous names if they were used alongside the standard colonial names, not in place of them. If the left wants to call Melbourne "Naarm", then I'm allowed to call it "Hong Kong" just because it's part of the One Country, Two (Naming) Systems scheme of my personal project.
This whole debacle with the Voice and its potential consequences happened because of woke sycophants pandering to sore losers demanding the "decolonisation" of this country while completely neglecting that they wouldn't be living in such a modern society without the things that colonialism bought (for better or worse) along with the communities in the outback that are still facing issues (admittedly brought on by the government in most cases), such as welfare, crime and substance abuse.
But hey, despite my ignorant, edgy and low-key bigoted opinions, I'll happily admit that I'm not the best person to be talking about Indigenous issues - mostly because I don't have the time to care. What I will say though, after what little I know and what little research I did, is that I'm not entirely sure that the Voice, at least in its current form, is the answer, even if it may seem like a means to an end.
At the time of writing this there hasn't been an announcement on when the referendum will take place, so until then I might try to keep an open mind about this. Maybe I'll end up changing my mind, who knows.
UPDATE - 30 August 2023: So it's been announced that the referendum will be on 14 October. Honestly, at this point in time, my stance hasn't really changed.
I watched the 2022 Boyer Lecture with Noel Pearson last night (because there was going to be a screening of it at work on Monday but I couldn't go because I was on a later shift and I had to work from home because of it) and I understood why the indigenous people are calling for recognition. My stance didn't change, but after mulling over it while writing this update, I justify my stance as essentially being, "what if they screw it up?" Once it gets passed, there is no way that the Voice to Parliament can be abolished without it seeming racist and such a referendum would be rejected by Parliament, if not the electorate. So why not have the referendum be about acknowledging that the land was "stolen" and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders are the traditional owners, then establish the Voice separately after the referendum has passed? Heck, they could have done a second question on the referendum to that effect.
I'm honestly ashamed to admit this, but during the 2017 same-sex marriage plebiscite, I originally considered voting Yes before I ended falling to the pressure of my family and decided to stand with them and my Christian friends in voting No, citing the breakdown of the traditional nuclear family and the slippery slopes of legalising polyamory, incest and pedophilia as well as "trans issues", like men going into female toilets. I'm guilty of being bigoted on that part, but in the years to come, I saw the actions of people like Chris-chan, Yaniv and Keffals (re. #DropKiwiFarms) and realised that my perceived "bigotry" was somewhat vindicated, and not in a good way either.
And as such, that is why I'm still intending to vote No, because I believe the potential aftereffects of enshrining the Voice in our constitution could lead to something just as bad, if not worse, than the three trans people I mentioned earlier. Heck, Lidia Thorpe's doing a good job of it right now and she's voting No because she believes in Treaty before Voice.
But hey, there's still six weeks until the referendum, so who knows, maybe my mind will have changed by then. Then again, in the five weeks since I originally made this post, I never managed to find the time to care, so I'm kind of doubting it.
On the other hand though, if this was a referendum for Australia to become a republic like in 1999, I would vote Yes in a heartbeat because I believe the Royal Family has lost whatever relevance it had left after Queen Elizabeth II's death, plus the Governor-General (Governors in the states) are basically just figureheads for the Crown with no real power. Coincidentally, the preamble proposed in the second question of the 1999 referendum contained a clause that recognised Indigenous people as "the nation's first people". I'm not kidding.

Self-determination is about undermining whitefella institutions, judiciaries, organisations and bureaucracies.
Self-determination is about enculturated white people who, on the strength of what may be a mere speck of indigenous DNA, now identify exclusively as Aboriginal, thereby giving themselves an economic and social leg-up.For the activist cadre it always was and always will be about money, power and control, all underlined by the notion that members of one race enjoy a preeminent ascendency over all other Australians.More examples of ‘self-determination’ can be found in the ban on climbing Ayers Rock (Uluru), Mt Warning (Wollumbin), Mt Gillen, and many Grampians climbs, all for ill-defined or unexplained ‘cultural’ reasons’.After much outcry, consideration is now being given to re-opening the Mt Warning climb, but only for those who pay a fee and are escorted by indigenous guides. More rent-seeking, what a surprise!Australian place names are also rapidly being overwritten with (most likely made-up) Aboriginal names (eg: K’gari, once known as Fraser Island). All of this is about claims to ownership, to ‘sovereignty’.These changes should not be mistaken for deference to Aboriginal culture; it’s no more nor less than an insidious takeover. What we are experiencing here is cultural guerrilla warfare, the picking off one target after the other.Don’t believe it? Look no further that what has happened in New Zealand. The Voice:Self-determination is not about ‘closing the gap’, nor Aborigines ‘having a voice’ – all of that can be achieved without a change to the Constitution. Indeed, the $35+ billion currently spent on Aboriginal affairs and the eleven plus current Aboriginal members of parliament are more than enough to fulfil both aims. The Voice referendum is purely and simply about the drive towards Aboriginal sovereignty, which can only be achieved by changing the nation’s foundational document and charter.Under the Albanese government, self-determination means the coming referendum, whose barely concealed intention is to divide Australia along lines of race.
What is hiding in plain sight is the Albanese government’s intention to de-facto fund and promote the ‘Yes’ campaign whilst hamstringing ‘No’ advocates. Anything the No campaign says can and will be construed as “misinformation”. We have seen this already with the appalling attacks by Noel Pearson and Marcia Langton’s on Jacinta Price.Brace for much more of that – and wonder, too, if the bile and attempts at character assassination are a foretaste of an empowered Voice?
Meanwhile, Australians are subjected to a daily and massive pro Yes propaganda barrage by the taxpayer-funded ABC and SBS.Remote Aboriginal Australians are unfortunate mascots in a power struggle among the white majority. The Voice is just the latest attempt by the left-bureaucratic class to get more control and further exploit the rest of us.Dr David Barton is a proud Celtic and Anglo-Saxon man with a long generational family history in Australia. He lives in Central Victoria.

News from Australia, 10 July
Noel Pearson, a prominent Indigenous elder and architect of the Uluru Statement from the Heart, has called for support for the Voice in Queensland, describing it as a crucial event in Australian history.
Mr Pearson highlighted the achievements of Indigenous leaders from Queensland and urged voters to seize the opportunity for change.
Lockhart River Mayor Wayne Butcher and Aurukun Shire Mayor Keri Tamwoy also voiced their support for the Voice, emphasizing the need for improved representation and partnerships in Indigenous communities.
Despite the opposition and poor polling, Pearson expressed optimism that the fundamentals for success have been laid in Queensland.
2. Consulting firm PwC will repay over $800,000 it received for work on the robodebt scheme following the findings of a royal commission that deemed the scheme "cruel and crude."
PwC's partner involved in the work is no longer employed by the company.
The lack of transparency and failure to deliver a comprehensive report by PwC raises concerns about its involvement in government consulting.
3. The Carbon Market Institute has called for a reduction of Australia's emissions by more than 70% by 2035 and suggested implementing a jet fuel emissions trading scheme and special schemes for heavy vehicles to achieve this target.

I'm doing this because I am a lover of many many male characters and I just want to talk about them.
(these are not necessarily in order because if I actually tried to rank them I think I would die, just in the order that I think about them)
1. Anthony Lockwood from Lockwood & Co., to the surprise of absolutely no one following me (sorry)
2. Endeavour Morse from Endeavour
3. Fox Mulder from The X Files
4. Peeta Mellark from The Hunger Games
5. Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars (especially Clone Wars era 😍)
6. Matthew Crawley from Downton Abbey
7. Kevin Pearson from This Is Us
8. Haymitch Abernathy from The Hunger Games
9. Connor from Detroit: Become Human
10. Noel Kastre (blorbo from my brain)
Tagging with absolutely no pressure: @nothing-an-iratze-cant-fix @thespektorspectator @cakeyouareoh and anyone else who wants to join!
Tagged by @afaroffsong to list my ten favourite male characters. ^_^ I had to think about this one for a bit.
Elrohir - A Right Different Tale After All, HollersandHolmes on AO3
Kiernan from the above
Firmus Piett as depicted by such as Malicean, WishfulThinking1978, and frodogenic
Max Veers as depicted by see above
Elrond Peredhel - all media written by Tolkien
Luke Skywalker - original Trilogy and some novelizations
Maedhros FĂ«anorian - Silmarillion
Aragorn - Lord of the Rings
Pippin - Lord of the Rings
And honestly I'm going to bend the rules on this last one: I am very, very fond of Max Way from Sons of the Star (the rules don't say you can't use your own OC)
And honorable mention goes to Wyatt Cain from Tin Man
Tagging with no pressure: @muse-write @musewrangler @aureentuluva70 and anyone else who wants to join in.

#OTD in 1984 – Singer and musician, Luke Kelly, was laid to rest at Glasnevin Cemetery.
‘His legacy was putting his own stamp on a song such that it became the definitive version of a song for others to come along and emulate.’ –John Sheahan. The mass was celebrated by Fr Michael Cleary at the Church of the Holy Child in Whitehall and The Dubliners performed during the ceremony. Kelly’s brothers, John, Jimmy and Paddy carried his coffin along with banjo player Barney McKenna. Luke
