Designing Jerseys using the overlocker

 As my theme for my Counter Culture project, was the division between Catholics and Protestants in Ireland. I decided to use a jersey from each community, take it apart and attach to the opponent garmentt.  I measured the sizes of the jerseys, and diagonally where I wanted the split in the garments.

I used the over- locker to sew the garments back together.

God created us, Religion divided us.

Since the beginning of time, humanity has been in constant need of a binding force to face the forces of nature. When the first man appeared millennials ago it wasn’t Jesus, Shiva or Allah that united all these primates together. In fact, their unity lied in surviving, scrounging for basic means to get by the day. It was later through the course of evolution did man begin to get creative. However today we find us divided by these very religions that were meant to unite people together.

Just like in the Agricultural revolution where various tribes divided by thousands of kilometers and had no means of contact start farming independently from one another, in the case of religion began getting creative simultaneously. The sole reason for this was the necessity of binding various tribes together in order to achieve singular goals. Instead of fighting one another over land, people began uniting over concepts of Gods residing in trees, rocks or even in the sky. These people then got furthermore creative and began building various architectural monuments which would provide a uniting force for people. The cause, which was noble was an instant trend. People would adopt sacred positions in these temples and soon became the spokesperson of God. These people were able influence the common man to make various kinds of sacrifices in order to gain the God’s blessings. Such rituals were consistent across all religions. However this is also where the problems began as who was to decide who’s God’s blessings held more value? Shiva’s aashirvaad or Jesus’ sacrifice.

As these religions grew, so did the idolatry of said Gods. Islam had its Muslim followers going year in year out on Hajj, the Christians praying every Sunday in Churches or Hindus celebrating Diwali. These religions which were meant to unite the forces of man together have instead left the man with superficial boundaries and forcing us to discriminate. Religion takes the form of political commentary in order to re-iterate its beliefs upon people. These aren’t making things better. Where religions could be used to help the poor, they are used to terrorize people. Violence was never the message of Allah however, because of certain people the entire religion is condemned. However, these very religions are a figment of our very vivid imaginations. People aren’t so different than one another. In fact they aren’t different at all. Religion has lost the very essence of what it was meant to stand for.

In my firm belief, we humans, were part of a science experiment that involved various chemicals to come together and give birth to the single celled amoeba. This experiment has to have been conducted by one who in my opinion is the supreme being that has given birth to all of existence. However much like Frankenstein’s monster. We are an experiment gone very wrong.
