My Wife Took a New Designer Drug Called Nocturnalia, Things Became Weird

“Don’t do drugs, kid, unless you want to have some fun.”

That’s the first thing my wife Janet ever said me, giving me a wink. She promptly swallowed a little pill, and without another word, held one out for me. I made a dismissive gesture and off she went, back to the dance floor.

It was at one of those hidden little back alley scene club, the type frequented by the weirder or more alternative parts of the population. You know the type: free spirits, esoterics, soul searchers, musicians, artists.

I could tell right away that the other patrons comprised a group of tightly knit regulars.

Somehow, though, I’d caught Janet’s attention and after only half an hour, she was back by my side.

We ended up talking for hours that night.

I guess it’s because of how different we were and how I clearly didn’t belong in her world. I’m a mathematician, a number cruncher so to speak, and work in controlling. Janet, on the other hand, was a free spirit, a painter, and always willing to explore new and interesting things, including substances.

Somehow, though, we hit it off and somehow we made it work. We got married six months later.

Our relationship was amazing. It felt as if all of our differences only brought us closer to one another. Sure, we had our problems, everyone does, and sure, I wasn’t the biggest fan of her little habit, but I had my own vices. Namely, costly bourbon.

Yet, we made it work, and I often took part in Janet’s ‘special little evenings.’ Janet would get high on acid or other psychedelics while painting, and I’d be with her getting drunk. Say what you want, but things never got out of hand; it was all recreational and nothing more than a bit of fun.

All that changed when Joseph came around.

> NOCTURNALIA is the story of V--., a young woman with no past and no one to turn to. Her boyfriend Corey just drove into a lamppost and they don’t know if it was suicide or just an accident. But he’s back from the dead, haunting her, trying to get her to die with him. 

Just as she’s about to pull the plug on life, her guardian angel, Alua, arrives on the scene. Alua is determined to keep V--. alive by showing her the drug-addled underbelly of the City of Collioppius. Surely partying hard enough will show Alua that life is worth living, even without her undead harp-playing boyfriend. 

She sleeps all day and stays up all night. She is a part-time go-go dancer. Join V--. as she drops acid, fucks capital-g God, and sprints down the line between life and death at top speed.

I.

I am the anti-fae of the power plants. I eat iron and lurk under street lights like a bad smell. I wear black, white and gold. I flicker in and out of parties, alt-dimensions where time doesn’t go straight. I dig out raves and basement shows. I slide through those chaotic spheres like a shadow, pressing my lips to the forehead of anyone who buys me a gram. Sometimes I’m a go-go dancer, half-specter, half-naked. When you see me in my panties and virgin skin, it’s only for a second. Then I disappear into the crowd.

 II.

I’ve been anti-fae for six weeks now, but nighttime still holds novelty. I’ve been using it to indulge my deepest sadnesses; each one is a mass of velvety despair in my gut. Gunmetal-heavy, they anchor me to the world. My eyes are forgetting the sting of sunlight, my mind the concrete-eating anxiety of interacting with baristas and bank tellers.

To be seen by people is my great anxiety.

This is one of the main reasons I took so well to nighttime. At three in the morning, no one asks if I’d heard any good music lately, or if I’m planning to go to the grocery store that afternoon. I can hold my marbles of sadness inside me and treasure them like a dragon on a mountain of gold.

I’m in Corey’s apartment on the living room couch. The lights are off. Through the window, I watch the dark parts of the vacant lot across the street. (Maybe something inside them watches me, too.) It’s filled with debris; the City has summoned me here with nothing but a tire iron and a fire pit. The way someone might put words in the mouth of God, I imagine what this place might tell me if it could speak. I will find you in the dark. I will pick you out like a bug in my hair. I will find you nocturnal.

”Spell of the Night” is about “Bäckahästen” (roughly translated into the horse of the stream) – a creature that can be interpreted as a spirit of the water stream and also as a beautiful but fickle horse that’ll lure children onto his back so that he can drag them down under the water into certain death.

The idea behind Nocturnalia saw its first light in late 2011 when founding members Kalle Elfvin and Dennis Skoglund started to write material which eventually became their first 7” single “Until the morning light” followed by 12” single “Night rainbow” and their first full length album ”s/t” (2013), released by local label Gaphals records. After some touring around Europe and a couple of line up changes they evolved musically into something more complex and introspective. They entered the studio to record their sophomore album ��Above below within” (2015), also released by Gaphals records.After the second album they decided to take a short hiatus from song-writing and touring in favor of other musical and creative projects - Drummer Dennis Skoglund was a member of the rock band Night for a couple of years and occasionally a live musician in dark ambient/folk music acts Forndom and Draugurinn. Guitarist Linus Lundgren is also a member of occult rock pioneers Year of the Goat and singer Linus Ekermo is the bass player in label mates Oblivious.In early 2018 they started to write new material and later that year they recorded their third full length album “III: Winter”, to be released by The Sign Records in November 2019.

Swedish Dark Rockers Nocturnalia Reveal First Single From Third LP

~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~

It will come as no surprise that Sweden is one the planet's prime locations for heavy music. The Sign Records has done a fine job of documenting the stoner-psychedelic end of the spectrum, tossing in some delightful surprises along the way. Recently we were given word that the label had signed Linköping's NOCTURNALIA and plans to release new material in September.

I've had an affinity for the dark rock vibe since discovering Ancient VVisdom and Young Hunter and first became aware of the five-member Nocturnalia in 2013, with the release of their debut, 'Nocturnal' (2013), followed by 'Above Below Within' (2015). There's an emotional undercurrent in Nocturnalia's sound that I find impossible to resist. Drawing from late-seventies and early-eighties influences like Rainbow, Linus Ekermo (vocals), Martin Ericsson (bass), Kalle Elfvin (guitar), Linus Lundgren (guitar), and Dennis Skoglund (drums) have carved out a vibe that's meant for the night, the kind of music you listen to on the drive home from a night of revelry. Something about the simple composition, crisp soaring vocals, and gothic sheen conjures a mood for contemplation and emotional honesty.

If this is your first time hearing Nocturnalia, I think "Beyond The White" makes a fitting introduction. Look for the new album 'III: Winter' (2019) later this year, with pre-orders soon announced here.

Some Buzz

In the mysterious vast lands of Scandinavia, where ancient monuments of stone erecting towards the sun, dark and heavy rock quintet Nocturnalia resides. With thunderous and organic sounds of classic rock, ritualistic drum patterns and sinister yet beautiful storytelling they create a hypnotizing blend of music and impressions characterized by epic soundscapes and sublime winding melodies.

The eerie and cold yet peacefully quiet atmosphere of the harsh Scandinavian winter manifests itself clearly in the cultural heritage throughout history; the hostile conditions, the absence of daylight, famine and stagnation have put emphasis on humanity’s endless and determined struggle for survival. These occurrences have shaped the tradition of music, philosophy, poetry, art and folklore connected to our nature and it’s mysticism, and has also been the primal source of inspiration for Nocturnalia.

With influences ranging from classic rock acts such as Rainbow and Black Widow to ‘Hammerheart’-era Bathory and traditional folk music woven together they have shaped their sound into something quite familiar but at the same time remote and unexplored.

The spiritual aspect of their music has also been an important part of the song writing as well as their intense and fiery live performances - to let go of habitual structures and allow the music to resonate with higher levels of the consciousness and deeper within unconsciousness. To let creativeness take form on its own premises. To put meaning free from words into music.
