Underground caverns / cannibalism / "Just a little more."

Nocona couldn't help but shiver as Elissa and her entered the golden underground cavern. From what the two had gathered, it was said that there was a secret treasure hidden in the end of the cavern. Elissa had been talking about it nonstop, which endeared Nocona.

What she wasn't endeared to, however, was entering a cavern.

She shivered, not from the cold, but the fact that she was here in a cavern. Just like when she was younger. She remembered it vividly. How, when she was eleven, her family and her went on a picnic, and she discovered an underground cavern. Curiosity hit her, and she explored it. However, she got lost. For days, in fact. With little food and water, she could only huddle up in the corner, crying her heart out—

"Nocona?" Elissa's voice broke her flashback. Nocona shook her head quickly, as she glanced at the woman she admired. "Is… everything okay?" Elissa questioned.

Nocona forced a smile, before nodding vehemently. "Y-yeah! It's just that… I don't know… I—"

"It's your first time in a cavern, is it not?" Elissa asked. "It's okay. When I first started out, I was scared too. I'll protect you if needed."

Nocona gulped, not wanting to correct her. She knew that Elissa loved to explore places like this. If she said that she was afraid of caverns, Elissa might send her back to her castle.

Oh Gods…

The fear struck her. What if she revealed her fear of caverns and Elissa sent her home? She couldn't live back there again. Not now. Not ever.

"I'll be fine," Nocona lied, "Like you said, it's my first time in a cavern."

Elissa nodded, before the two continued deeper in the cavern.

As they went deeper and deeper, Nocona's nerves began to worsen, and she began to gasp for air. Was it just her, or was the cavern lacking air? No. That couldn't be right. Tears began to form in her eyes, making her surroundings blur. She had to keep going. She had to impress Elissa. She refused to go back to the castle.

But the memories of her being in that one cavern continued to haunt her. To attack her. How bats flew at her, how she was starving and dehydrated. How she was crying for her mother and father.

How she thought that she would die, alone, without anyone helping her.

Her gasping alerted Elissa, as she stopped and turned to face Nocona. Her eyes widened when she saw Nocona not breathing well, and she rushed to her friend.

"Hey," Elissa whispered, "are you okay?"

"...N-n-no…" Nocona gasped, as tears began to fall down her face.

Elissa gritted her teeth, realizing what was happening.

A panic attack.

"Sh sh sh," Elissa soothed, "it's okay. Here."

Taking Nocona's hand, she led her to a nearby rock before helping her sit down. Nocona's breathing was still quick, but Elissa noticed it began to calm down.

"Take a few deep breaths," Elissa whispered.

Nocona did as she was told. She breathed through her nose shakily, before letting it out with her mouth. After a few times of doing this, her breathing began to return to normal. The panic attack that reared its head began to wane as she began calming down from the deep breaths.

"There we go," Elissa soothed, rubbing the back of Nocona's hand with a small smile.

Nocona sighed, wiping away her tears with her free hand. She glanced at Elissa, before giving her a sheepish smile.

"S-sorry.." she apologized.

"You don't have to apologize," Elissa said with a shake of her head. "What happened?"

"...I lied," Nocona finally admitted, "This isn't the first time I was in a cavern."

"Oh?" Elissa asked with an eyebrow raised.

"But… it wasn't a fun experience for me. I was eleven when I was lost in one. I was… so scared. I thought I was going to die in that cavern. And that was… something I was afraid of." She wiped away more tears. "I-I'm sorry. If you think I'm useless because of that, I can—"

"You're not useless, Nocona," Elissa spoke firmly. Nocona's eyes widened at the tone. "You have something to work with. In fact, you're working on it now."

"H-how so?"

"By coming with me, in the underground cavern." Elissa smiled as she rubbed Nocona's hand again. "You didn't stay outside. You came with me here. You're brave for doing that, Nocona, even with your trauma. And I admire that."

"...You think so?" Nocona questioned.

"Of course! Even with the dangers in the cavern, you came anyway. I feel you'll be a great explorer; no matter what, you remain brave and tough. That's two key traits an explorer needs, and you're doing well."

Nocona wiped away the tears that fell, before nodding with a small smile. She was right; Elissa had explored for many years, and she would know an explorer when she saw one. Just like in all the stories she read.

"...Thank you, Elissa," Nocona said, before hugging Elissa.

Elissa smiled, patting the other woman's head. "Of course, Nocona."

The two stood from the rock, and Elissa asked, "Ready to find that treasure?"

Nocona nodded happily, "Of course!"

As they continued their exploring, Nocona grew braver and braver when going through caverns. Caverns didn't bother her anymore—she was an explorer after all.
