Some of these are my absolute favourites, I've lost count of how many times I've read them. I cannot get enough of "the bright falls series", "One the same page", "Those who wait", "The secret of you and me" and the last entry "Falls From Grace". No matter how many times I read them. 7. Post a snippet from a wip.

She laughed, the tension in her releasing. “Do you want to get my heart racing, Lewie?” His own soft chuckle faded and he stepped closer to her and lowered his voice. “I really do.” And just like that, the tension, the ache, returned two-fold. What was this man doing to her? He reached over and stroked her jaw. “Do you want me to get your blood pumping?” She found herself quivering beneath his touch. “Maybe.” “Just maybe?”  “I’m receptive to it.” He grinned and pulled her closer. “I’d prefer you to be keen. Maybe even enthused.” The bright blue of his eyes dazed her like a midday summer sky. “I can offer you amenable," she said. “Damned with faint interest." He picked her up and put her on the counter, letting his hands rest on her hips. God she loved when he did that. “I fear I need to give you something to make you a little more enthusiastic.” “You might have to,” she whispered. 

11. Do you write scenes in order, or do you jump around?

This is a good question! I don't usually think much about it. I rarely write dual POV for fanfic, because it's time consuming and I'm lazy. So when I know the premise, I generally know who's POV it'll be in. Like, in one of my wips, I decided that Levi is just discovering that he's bisexual and the story will follow him going from closeted to out so he can be with Lucas (who is already out and resents being shoved back in). Since Levi is the one who is going to grow and change, the story was always gonna be in his POV in my head.

With TSIME I DID plan to write Beach Hut Confessionals from Lili's point of view and scatter them throughout the story, but after the first one I realized that I liked it better when we only saw things through Bobby's lens.

29. What’s something about your writing that you’re proud of?

I'm proud of writing small moments that foreshadow the big emotional impacts to come. Most people never even notice them, so they're kind of just something for me. TSIME has a fuck ton of them.

**WARNING: THE SUN IN MY EYES SPOILERS AHEAD)** Bobby and Lili share a cup of tea and Lili turns the mug so her lips touch the same spot his do, foreshadowing the first kiss she'll instigate many chapters later (though she'll forever say that Bobby instigated it). Lili tells Bobby early on that "people leave." And there are numerous scenes of him watching her walk away from him. All of it foreshadowing what happens after CA. Bobby tells Lili she should fall madly in love with him and she says it's a bad idea and he quotes a line from Thirty Rock, telling her there are no bad ideas. Only good ideas that go horribly wrong. Foreshadowing their relationship in the villa as a whole.

My favorite is when Noah grabbed Lili, threw her over his shoulder and walked off with her, saying, "Sorry Bobby, I'm stealing your girl," foreshadowing the disaster recoupling and something that happened later after the show between Lili and Noah. FYI I have a one shot for that one as soon as I post the last chapter of TSIME. It's both distressing and sexy. Thanks for the interrogation, Sarah 😝 You jerk.

Reading list Dec 2024

On Killing: The Psychological Cost of Learning to Kill in War and Society by Dave Grossman. It is required reading at the FBI Academy, the DEA Academy, the US Air Force NCO Academy, and other law enforcement agencies and military schools around the US. The book is based on S.L.A. Marshall's theory that the majority of soldiers in war do not ever fire their weapons due to an innate resistance to killing.

Hadji Murad by Leo Tolstoy. One critic said of the book "[it is] my personal touchstone for the sublime of prose fiction, to me the best story in the world." Written 50 years after its events, the story is about a real-life Avar rebel commander. Tolstoy described Murad as "the leading dare-devil and ‘brave’ of all Chechnya".

The Old Words by kvikindi/@septembriseur A Helmut Zemo & Winter Soldier (MCU) fanfic. Content warnings: discussion of violence, suicide, war crimes including death, child death, sexual assault. The author notes she is clear Zemo did not rape, but looking back, that is ridiculous.

Voices from Chernobyl: The Oral History of a Nuclear Disaster by Svetlana Alexievich, Nobel Laureate, originally published in Russian in 1997 as Chernobyl Prayer, 9 years after the disaster. She interviewed more than 500 eyewitnesses, including firefighters, liquidators (members of the cleanup team), politicians, physicians, physicists, and ordinary citizens over a period of 10 years.

Daughter of the Tigris by Muhsin Al-Ramli. A beautiful urbane woman marries a sheikh so she can travel Iraq searching for the corpse of her father. Sequel to The President's Gardens which was longlisted for the IPAF, known as the "Arabic Booker".

Chasing the Flame: One Man's Fight to Save the World by Samantha Power, Pulitzer Prize winner, a biography of Sergio Vieira de Mello. De Mello worked for the UN for 30 years, and was positioned to be the UN Secretary-General, before his 2003 death in Iraq. A profile in courage and humanity--and an unforgettable meditation on how best to manage the deadly challenges of the twenty-first century. His career involved peace negotiations in post-invasion Lebanon, the repatriation of Cambodian refugees, and the cease-fire talks in Bosnia, among others.

Black Like Me by John Howard Griffin. A reporter in 1959 darkens his skin and travels around the American South to document racism. He later worked with Civil Rights leaders like Dr Martin Luther King Jr.

The Women in Black by Madeleine St John. The author has been shortlisted for the Booker Prize. A 'meringue' of a novel about several Australian women working for a department store in 1959 Sydney, contrasted with some Continental (European) refugees. Has a movie and an upcoming TV series.

Lee Lockwood: Castro's Cuba: An American Journalist's Inside Look At Cuba, 1959-1969 by Saul Landau This volume includes Lockwood’s photographs of Cuba and Castro, many insightful observations, and extensive excerpts from the legendary Lockwood-Castro conversations. Between 1959 and 1969, photojournalist Lee Lockwood documented Cuba and Fidel Castro with unprecedented freedom and access, including a marathon seven-day interview with Castro himself.

Daring to Drive by Manal al-Sharif Memoir of a Saudi woman known for leading the #Women2Drive movement challenging the ban on women driving in Saudi Arabia. Also covers other topics including Saudi prisons, female genital mutilation, author's marriage.

Born a Crime: Stories from a South African Childhood by Trevor Noah #1 “Language, even more than color, defines who you are to people.” #2 “The way my mother always explained it, the traditional man wants a woman to be subservient, but he never falls in love with subservient women. He’s attracted to independent women. “He’s like an exotic bird collector,” she said. “He only wants a woman who is free because his dream is to put her in a cage.”

Little Boy Lost by Marghanita Laski Hilary Wainwright, widower, poet, intellectual, returns after the war to a blasted and impoverished France in order to trace a child lost five years before.

A Place of Greater Safety by Hilary Mantel Described by septembriseur as the book that had the most impact on them. Hilary Mantel won the Booker Prize twice.

Sing and Shout: The Mighty Voice of Paul Robeson by Susan Goldman Rubin Biography of a singer, actor, and activist. What I found interesting was his positive attitude of Europe compared to America regarding their treatment of him as a black person.

Book: It Lives In The Woods Pairing: Harry x Noah Word Count: 532

“How did you find this?” Harry asked as he followed Noah up the ladder in the back of the library. They had spent the whole afternoon in the library seeing if they could find any information on Redfield. All their other friends had other obligations or early curfews, so it had just been Harry and Noah. The library was going to close in an hour and their brains were fried, so Noah had suggested a small field trip. He’d led Harry to the back of the building, sneaking them into a room marked “employee only.” Not that it was difficult, the door wasn’t even locked.

As Harry emerged on the roof of the building, Noah held out his hand to help him up. Harry smiled as he took it.

“I worked here the last two summers,” Noah finally answered.

“Really?” Harry asked, feeling the cool autumn breeze blow through his hair, a few pieces sticking to his face. As he ran a hand through his hair, he continued, “I always got more of a diner-worker vibe from you than a librarian.”

“Yeah, well, I didn’t really care much what job I had as long as it got me out of the house.” Noah sat down on the roof, looking out into the woods behind the library. “And making money was nice.” 

Harry sat down next to him, the wind once again blowing his hair into his face. As soon as he managed to get it all out of his face, the wind just blew again.

“Turn around,” Noah said.

“What?”

“Just turn around.”

Harry turned until his back was facing Noah, when Noah put his hands on Harry’s shoulders to stop him. Noah gently combed one of his hands through Harry’s hair. “Is this okay?”

“Yeah. Um, what are you doing though?”

“I’m getting your hair out of your face.” Noah divided Harry’s hair into the sections he needed to make a french braid.

“Oh. You know how to braid hair?”

“I used to braid Jane’s hair when we were little. Dad didn’t know how, Mom wasn’t really around enough too, and Jane’s arms got tired when she did it herself.” 

“Are you doing a french braid?” Harry asked as he felt Noah’s hands dance through his hair. “Isn’t that kind of complicated?”

“A little, I guess. Not really once you get the hang of it though. Jane really liked french braids. But she always insisted on having a fishtail braid when we went swimming. Said it made her feel like a mermaid. I was getting really good at those when she…” Noah trailed off as he finished braiding Harry’s hair and tied it off with the ponytail he kept on his wrist. “Anyway, it’s not great ’cause I’m a little out of practice, but it should keep your hair out of your face.” Noah blushed as he looked away from Harry, who had turned back around to face him. 

“Thanks, Noah.” Harry looked down and saw Noah’s hand resting in between them on the roof. He slowly moved his own hand to cover Noah’s. But instead of acknowledging it, they both just looked out into the dark woods ahead of them.

When Jane Was Here - ILITW

Summary: Noah reminisces about a happier time when his twin sister was here.

The boy with a beanie and a denim jacket sat down on one of the benches at Westchester’s town square, cursing through gritted teeth. As usual, he had an argument with Mom and left the house. It always felt like he would suffocate when he was at home.

The next day would be the first day of senior year. 

It had been 10 years since Jane’s death.

Not that it changed much. Things were still crap.

When Noah woke up that morning, Mom was already talking his ears off. She always got more emotional at the beginning of each school year. Probably thinking about how it would have been if Jane was still here.

...Because that was exactly what always passed through his mind every single year.

Not that it changed much. Jane wasn't here anymore. 

She hadn't been for a long time now. 

For ten years. For ten years, Jane has been gone. 

Noah sometimes wished he could turn back time to when Jane was here.

When Jane was here…

When Jane was here, everything was better. Mom and Dad were still together, even though they were always fighting and it always ended up upsetting Jane, it still was better. 

Although things weren't great, they still were better. 

At least, better than now.

It was always better, because Jane was here. 

…Not that it changed much. Because Jane wasn't here anymore. 

When Jane was here…

A resigned sigh left the boy's lips and he looked around the square. It was a typical Sunday afternoon, with some people walking around, living their own lives.

And then, he recognized a few of them. His former friends.

He saw Lucas entering the library, looking busy as always. A while later, Lily entered the same building. Stacy and some girls he recognized from the cheerleading team chit chatted among themselves, probably shopping or doing whatever cheerleaders did during their free time. Andy and his friend, Tom, showed up at some point too, leaving the movie theatre just across Westchester’s town hall, talking animatedly with one another. Beanie boy noticed that the only movie playing was an ancient cheesy-looking horror film titled “Blood Sacrifice II: The Return of Dracula’s Revenge”.

Although he saw all of them, none of them seemed to notice him. 

Not that it changed much. After that day, none of them talked to each other ever again. 

When Jane was here…

He was so sick of always being tired and alone.

That day, he not only lost Jane. He lost all his friends too.

He missed all of them. Not just Jane, but all the gang too. He missed playing with them. 

Everyone plays together…

Soon, those obsessive thoughts were back to floating around his mind.

Noah bet that no one would miss him if he simply vanished. Dad left them as soon as Jane was gone. Mom couldn’t stand to face him. He had lost all his friends on that day. Jane wasn’t here.

When Jane was here...

To be honest, his life didn’t mean that much to him. Noah felt that he was living up for Mom and Jane. But what was the point if Mom couldn’t stand the sight of him without thinking of Jane? And what was the point if Jane wasn’t here?

What was the point of all that? If Jane wasn’t here?

If Jane was here...

When Jane was here…

He stayed there throughout the day, the hours passing by. That was how he spent most of his days. To avoid staying in the same environment as his mother for more than thirty minutes, the teenage boy preferred to waste his time watching people doing their things, going on with their lives.

He just watched the days pass by. It’s been like that ever since Jane had been gone.

Just watching people and daydreaming.

He would spend most of his days daydreaming. Daydreaming of when Jane was here. Daydreaming of a world where Jane would be here.

If Jane was here…

Daydreaming of a time when Jane was here.

When Jane was here…

When Jane was here, things were better. 

Everything was better.

Mom and Dad didn’t hate him, Noah had friends, and Jane was here. Things were better when Jane was here. So much better.

He didn't feel lonely. He was happy. Noah was a happy boy.

When Jane was here…

...But Jane wasn’t here anymore.

Noah snapped back to reality and looked around. Night had already fallen. 

How long had he been there? 

He looked up to the big old clock at the town hall. Half past nine. He should go home. Mom probably was out, playing cards and gambling at one of her friend's house, like she always did.

The tall and skinny boy stood up and dragged himself home.

A few minutes later, he was on his own, walking down the long and narrow road on the border of Westchester. He cursed, his hands shoved in his pockets. It was a chilly night.

He hated living so near to the forest. Even after all those years, it still gave him the creeps.

Noah hated the sound the wind made through the trees. It almost felt like it was calling for him. If he didn’t know how crazy it sounded, the boy could swear that the wind called his name whenever he was near the forest. Calling his name, calling him to come to play.

As if Jane was here.

If Jane was here…

When Jane was here…

The boy shivered, glueing his arms to his body, in a failed attempt to protect himself from the freezing wind that passed through the trees and hit him.

“Noah…”

He could hear it. But he didn’t want to. He couldn’t let himself believe that the wind was calling him.

He just couldn’t.

“Noah… let’s… play… together…”

When Jane was here...
