Exploring the Three Primary Greenhouse Gases
Graph: @noaaclimate
To begin, let's focus on the three most prevalent greenhouse gases.
In recent measurements, we've witnessed a significant increase in their concentrations, all of which have reached unprecedented levels:
* Carbon Dioxide (CO2): The annual global average concentration of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere has surged to 417.1 parts per million (ppm). This represents a staggering 50% increase compared to pre-industrial levels.
* Methane (CH4): On the other hand, the global mean concentration of tropospheric methane has seen an alarming rise, reaching levels that are now 165% higher than in the pre-industrial era.
* Nitrous Oxide (N2O): Nitrous oxide, another potent greenhouse gas, has also experienced a significant increase, with concentrations now standing at 24% higher than historical levels.
It's worth noting that all three of these greenhouse gases have recently set new records for their atmospheric concentrations.
This unprecedented rise underscores the urgency of addressing these issues and taking meaningful action to mitigate their impact on our climate.

Antarctic Ice Reaches "Record-Smashing Low" Alarming Scientists
Bad Record
A grim report put together by representatives of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has revealed that Antarctic sea ice levels have reached a record new wintertime low.
Usually, the ice is expected to accumulate during the Southern Hemisphere's winter season. But this year, data from the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) tells a wildly different story — and unfortunately, it's one of continued loss.
"In the midst of its winter growth phase, Antarctic sea ice has reached a record smashing-low extent for this time of year," NOAA tweeted last week. "Sea ice extent is approaching a half a million square miles below the previous lowest extent, observed in 2022."
It's a concerning situation — especially considering the Antarctic already reached record-low summer levels back in February.

Four Texases
This year's Antarctic wintertime sea ice levels fall nearly "one million square miles below the 1981–2010 average" and approach "half a million square miles below the previous lowest extent for the day, observed in 2022," according to the NOAA report.
To put those figures into context, NSIDC science writer Michon Scott, who authored the NOAA report, offered a helpful comparison.
"Antarctic sea ice extent for June 27, 2023, fell below the previous record low for this date by nearly twice the size of Texas," Scott wrote. "It fell below the 1981–2010 average for this date by nearly four times the size of Texas."
Global Impact
These findings are especially troubling since Antarctica has generally proven more resilient in comparison to the Artic, which has conversely shown a "decades-long decline" in surrounding sea ice, according to the report.
Considering that ocean levels play a massive role in everything from global weather patterns to food systems, it's a trend we should all be worried about.
"Antarctic sea ice's current extraordinary behavior raises the question of whether this could be the start of a longer-term trend related to climate or ocean changes," Scott wrote, "but answering that question will require more time, data, and research."

The contiguous United States had its coldest February in more than 30 years! But the chill wasn’t enough to overpower the warmth of December and January in the seasonal average as the 2020-2021 winter ranked in the warmest third of winters on record. This natural-color image of smoke and fires in several states within Brazil including Amazonas, Mato Grosso, and Rondônia was collected by NOAA/NASA's Suomi NPP using the VIIRS (Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite) instrument on August 20, 2019.  Although it is not unusual to see fires in Brazil at this time of year due to high temperatures and low humidity it seems this year the number of fires may be record setting.  According to Brazil’s space research center INPE almost 73,000 fires have been recorded so far this year. INPE is seeing an 83% increase over the same period in 2018. NASA's Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Worldview application provides the capability to interactively browse over 700 global, full-resolution satellite imagery layers and then download the underlying data. Many of the available imagery layers are updated within three hours of observation, essentially showing the entire Earth as it looks "right now.” Suomi NPP is managed by NASA and NOAA.

New story in Politics from Time: Trump Said ‘We Need’ Global Warming to Deal With Record Cold Temperatures. Here’s Why That Doesn’t Make Sense
President Trump has been a longtime opponent of taking action on climate change, as evidenced by everything from his accusation that the phenomenon is a “hoax” created by China to his decision to pull the U.S. out of the Paris Agreement.
There are many reasons Trump may be against addressing climate change, but one thing is clear: he doesn’t understand the science behind it.
On Monday, the President took to Twitter to repeat a joke he frequently makes during winter weather events — this time the record-breaking, polar vortex-caused cold that’s sweeping the midwest this week — as a reason climate change cannot be real.
In the beautiful Midwest, windchill temperatures are reaching minus 60 degrees, the coldest ever recorded. In coming days, expected to get even colder. People can’t last outside even for minutes. What the hell is going on with Global Waming? Please come back fast, we need you!
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) January 29, 2019
The problem with Trump’s analysis is that climate and weather are not the same thing.
Weather refers to the atmospheric conditions at a particular place and time. At this very moment, the weather in the midwest is freezing cold, with major snowstorms.
Climate refers to the long-term atmospheric patterns in a particular area. It may hit -20°F in the midwest this week, but over the long term, the average temperature is expected to rise, as is the frequency of days with extreme high temperatures. In fact, the National Climate Assessment, a landmark report released last year following a collaboration between more than a dozen federal agencies, shows that those trends are “higher for the Midwest than in any other region of the United States.”
Moreover, global warming is a worldwide phenomenon that refers to the spike in the Earth’s average surface temperature. That rise in temperature won’t necessarily be felt uniformly across the globe.
These distinctions help explain why many scientists and scientific organizations like NASA refer to “climate change” rather than “global warming.” The globe is certainly warming, but the phrase doesn’t fully reflect the changes caused by higher temperatures, which can result in more extreme weather events of many varieties during all seasons.
None of this should be news to Trump. Government scientists have recognized the threat posed by greenhouse gas emissions since at least the Lyndon B. Johnson administration. And during the Trump presidency, federal agencies have repeatedly reiterated the urgency of the threat, including with the National Climate Assessment. That report, which stretches more than 1,000 pages and includes work from more than 300 authors, shows that climate change is already affecting the U.S. and has implications for everything from agriculture to mental health. The effects of climate change “threaten the health and wellbeing of the American people” and “further disrupt many areas of life, exacerbating existing challenges and revealing new risks,” said David Easterling, a report author and scientist at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), at the time of the report’s release.
And, if that report wasn’t enough, NOAA followed Trump’s tweet with a much simpler graphic Tuesday:
Winter storms don't prove that global warming isn't happening. https://t.co/LDqfq4JH9n pic.twitter.com/ndmLD637Cb
