This is my NSR oc, Sweeney Tart. She’s a pastry chef who owns a cake shop in the Dream Fever district called The Cube. She’s also an opera singer, but that’s more of a fun little hobby rather than a career for her. There’s hardly a moment where she’s sitting still since she always has the compulsive need to walk around and do things. Even in the middle of conversations she’s bouncing her leg or tapping her finger. She also tends to talk quickly since she has a lot of thoughts she needs to get out of her brain all at once.

There’s a running gag with her where she gets red dye/fondant/icing/something else on her clothes so people theorize that she murders people and bakes them into her cakes, y’know cause Sweeney Todd n all that. But she is genuinely just a sweet gal surrounded by unfortunate circumstances lmao. She also has a big ass rat named Mrs. Lovett who I should draw sometimes.

Oh yeah, thoughts since I finished the main storymode on Hard for Hi-fi Rush:

If you like Stylish Action/3D action games at all (think DMC, Bayonetta, even God Hand), it's an easy recommend.

Lots of rambling that I might turn into a review/essay below the cut:

Gameplay is almost perfect. Seriously might be my favorite Stylish action game. I mentioned it before but the added rhythm adds a beautiful layer that other games lacked, where it felt like every fight was challenging, even when I knew how to optimize my movement and tools.

Story is incredibly basic with almost no twist, which kind of surprised me. It's got the same story beats as No Straight Roads (which IMO does everything EXCEPT the gameplay better), but with a lot less spice. Not necessarily a bad thing (everything else was basically perfect), but I'll be interested to see what they do for a plot, should they actually make the sequel.

Characters/Non-story writing is fine. Perfectly serviceable. I appreciate how they didn't have any hinted love interest stuff, outside the one lesbian moment when Korsica complimented Peppermint. I wasn't a fan of Zanzo just being "Remember THIS Jojo moment??" though (though I enjoyed how they included the Golden Wind punch panel).

Voice-acting was whatever. I like Sungwon Cho but he didn't fit as the character he played, and everybody else just felt kinda bland, nobody's delivery really stood out to me outside of Korsica's Irish accent.

All of the above "Meh"/"whatever"s are purely from a #Critic perspective though - they didn't hamper the fun I had with the core game at all.

Look below for a FULL gameplay ramble where I nitpick Basically Everything I can think of:

Over-reliance on your Buddy assists (the game's version of alternate and ranged weapons) later in the game gets rough, especially against the last few bosses.

It may just have been because of playing on Hard, but there were almost NO health drops whatsoever. The two Health tank upgrades I got were completely useless for my entire playthrough.

but these levels are fucking MARATHONS, each level was 30 minutes minimum.

Most of the fights after the first half of the game were just me waiting in back for my Buddy cooldowns (which are mercifully short outside of Macaron) to deal with the RPS enemy shields/Super Armor/Tough Guy effects.

I REALLY dislike that Chai has NO super armor whatsoever. It's already odd (DMC has it for weaker enemy damage in general), but in a game where rhythm is key, and you can get knocked out of combos from literally any damage, with limited parry inputs (due to the Rhythm beat design, attacks and parries technically HAVE to come out around the same frame, so if you're in a specific animation, it's hard to parry in time).

Those two facts combined meant I couldn't really do any cool combos, because the ones that aren't just "Mash light attack" weren't realistic. I can't keep enemies stunned/in place most of the time, so I relied on Super moves/Devil Triggers/whatever to actually waveclear at all. Bosses were a no-go on trying to Dante 1v1 unless I knew all of their moves already, because I'd take 20% damage from their single attack if I missed the parry, and they'd take scratch damage no matter what I did.

In my head, Chai should've have a sort of rechargable Super armor shield (think Halo's rechargable shield), where as long as he has some shield, he'll also have Super armor and can't be knocked out of animations outside of certain attacks (IE certain boss attacks). This would mean I could actually try the cooler/more specific combos and experiment a bit more.

Also, just like in DMC Devil May Cry's Special Edition, the RPS Buddy shields should've just been damage reductions until removed, instead of second health bars/actual damage blockers.

Platforming was basic as hell, and there was never a case of "This is a challenging and interesting platforming section", but they used them well for lore/exposition/breathers between big fights.

Do you have any material on artist/writer collaborations - either on the collaboration process, or on how to find a collaborator to begin with?

This is a great question, and not always one with a straight-forward answer! While many webcomic projects are solo projects for long-term logistics reasons, some webcomics follow a split of roles between writers and artists (or maybe further split for inkers/flatters/colorists/letterers). Collaborative teams like this can form in many ways, both formally or informally:

Comic creators may find more members for their team to hire from boards like Reedsy, communities like @cartoonistcoop, or hashtags events like PortfolioDay on social media

Writing and comic Discord servers can be good gathering places to make friends, learn about other peoples' projects, and get recommendations when someone has availability and interest for a collab. (Note that most creators you meet in these place will have their own projects, though, so don't go in expecting folks to immediately invest time in your work! Be respectful of their time and show interest/help out with their work too!)

RP or fan groups can be hotbeds for learning the storytelling styles of other people, and that may take comic form somewhere down the road!

Events with a deadline like anthology projects, NaNoWriMo, or Itch.io Game Jams, which often host forum and community spaces where creators can connect and collaborate for a short time and be done if it doesn't work out

Friends, spouses, and siblings often team up when they're into the same things

Some things that factor into whether or not potential collaborators will want to work with you on your comic project:

The scope of the project. Comic projects can take years, and short, deadline-driven projects can be easier to commit to than long-term ones.

Your experience. If you haven't ever finished a comic, collaborators may be cautious to work with you if they can't see concrete proof of what you're bringing to the table, or if they suspect they're going to be doing most of the work. For writers, be sure to have your ideas fairly fleshed out, and your plans as clear as possible. For artists, keep samples and portfolio pieces handy of comic work, not just illustrations. Show you know what your part entails and that you've done it before!

How compatible you are. Many great collaborations come from folks who know each other, enjoy each others' ideas, and work in a compatible way.

How much of a role they have in the creative process. Are you just looking for someone to draw your ideas? Or give you ideas to draw? Or are you interested in building something together?

Money! (though this isn't always a guarantee that the creators you talk to will have time, even if offered financial compensation)

Our best recommendation if you want more collaboration opportunities to come into your life is to see who's vibing with what you're doing in your circles, and see if there are small ways you can collaborate to test the compatibility of your work styles and get experience communicating with each other. Keep expectations clear, be ready to offer your labor to help others, and be flexible with adapting to others, adjusting your plans, or possibly contributing to projects that don't take off.

We also highly recommend this blog post of questions to ask when reaching out to hire someone. While this advice is written specifically about letterers, a lot of it applies to any member of a comic creator team!
