White Wine In The Sun
Title: White Wine In The Sun (Prompt- let's go somewhere warm for the winter)   Pairing: Bucky Barnes x Female Reader Summary:  It’s been years since Bucky has truly celebrated Christmas, but this year, he finds himself reluctantly agreeing to spend the holidays with you at your childhood home—a sunny, warm retreat in Australia.
Tumblr media

Warnings:  Romance, Little Angsty and Fluff, Kissing A/N: Another entry for @the-slumberparty December daze challenge- Day 16) As an Australian Christmas is a different experience for us.. Also it’s 40+/104 degrees here today LOL taking inspo from White Wine In The Sun by Tim Minchin
The sound of jet engines roared in the background as Bucky adjusted his duffle bag over his shoulder, glancing down at the boarding pass in his hand. A flight to Melbourne, Australia, was far from how he imagined spending his Christmas. He looked over at you, the excitement on your face unmistakable as you juggled your carry-on and passport.
"You sure you want to drag me along for this?" he muttered, his tone low but tinged with humour.
You smiled at him, nudging his arm. "I'm not dragging you. You're coming willingly. Mostly."
He huffed, shaking his head but allowing you to guide him toward the gate. "Just remember, this was your idea," he said, though there was no bite to his words.
As you boarded the plane and found your seats, Bucky couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. He had never been one for big family gatherings, and the thought of spending Christmas with your family in a small country town made him a little anxious. But as he looked over at you, he saw the excitement in your eyes and knew he couldn't say no.
The flight was long, but eventually, you arrived in Melbourne and made your way to the rural property where you grew up. The drive long from the capital, though Bucky could practically watch you vibrate in the driver's seat next to him, the aircon already blasting in the car. You regaled him with stories of Christmases past in in the country. “Down here, Christmas is typically BBQ, white wine, beers and prawns.” You did wonder if Bucky would miss snow and roaring fires. He listened quietly, his lips quirking into small smiles when you told him about your dad’s chaotic attempts to make pavlova and your siblings’ insistence on Christmas karaoke when everyone got too drunk or had to much sugar.
“It’s… different,” Bucky said cautiously as he looked out car window, watching the paddocks of dry grass and gumtrees past by.
“You’ll love it,” you assured him, squeezing his hand. “It might not be snowy and cold, but it’s still magical. And I want you to experience it with me.” The house was a beautiful, some old farm house with a wrap-around veranda and large trees surrounding it. Dogs running around the gardens by the house as the car pulled up the long drive. As you stepped out of the car, Bucky followed getting hit in the face by the stifling heat that seemed to not affect you at all as he took in the sights and sounds of the property. You led him to the front door, Bucky looked uncomfortable in the heat already.  Your parents came bustling out to greet you, their enthusiasm immediately overwhelming Bucky, though he managed a polite smile as they pulled you into hugs.
“And this must be Bucky,” your mom said warmly, extending a hand. “We’ve heard so much about you.”
Bucky’s lips twitched into a faint smile. “Thank you for having me,” he said, his voice quiet but genuine.
Your dad clapped him on the back, nearly making him stumble. “Come on in! Bet you’re starving after that flight.” “Your fathers even put the aircon on.” “Oh it is a special occasion!” You chime trying not to laugh as you both got ushed inside into the cool. “Thought your poor boy might melt on us if I didn’t.” You hoped Bucky had been around you long enough to understand ‘Australian’ humour or this might be a long few days for him.
Thankfully  Bucky adjusted to the unorthodox holiday traditions your family embraced. He helped your dad man the BBQ as more family descended on the house, earning approving nods for his efficient handling of the steaks. Your sister arrival  with her small family resulted in your shrieking like someone had doused you in ice water, Bucky had barely enough time to register what was going on before you took off sprinting across the lawn almost taking her to the ground in a hug  while her husband carried their new infant daughter from the car. “ABBY!” Abby squealed in delight, squeezing you just as tightly as you embraced her, both of you laughing like kids again. “Oh my God, look at you! You’re glowing!” you exclaimed, pulling back to hold her at arm’s length. “And her! Let me see her!”
Her husband chuckled, carefully shifting the tiny bundle in his arms toward you. “Meet baby Lucy,” he said proudly.
Your heart melted instantly as you reached for the baby, cradling her with practiced ease. “Oh, Abby, she’s perfect,” you breathed, your eyes misting as you took in the soft, delicate features of your new niece. Lucy yawned, her tiny face scrunching up before settling into a peaceful expression, and you swore your heart grew three sizes.
“Bucky!” you called over your shoulder, your excitement brimming over. “Come ‘ere! You ‘ave to meet her!”
Bucky, who had just finished placing a perfectly grilled steak onto a serving tray for your dad, looked up from the BBQ. He hesitated for only a moment, his brows knitting together in a mix of curiosity and cautiousness, before making his way over.
“This is Bucky,” you introduced as he approached, your smile wide as you gestured to him with one hand while still holding Lucy in the other. “And Bucky, this is my sister Abby, her husband Jake, and the newest addition to the family—baby Lucy.”
Abby gave Bucky a once-over, her expression swiftly turning approving. “So ‘is is the famous Bucky,” she said, her voice teasing. “I’ve heard a lot about you.”
Bucky glanced at you, a faint blush creeping up his neck. “All good things, I hope.”
“Mostly,” Abby teased with a smirk before extending her hand. “Welcome to the chaos. If you survived the BBQ, you’re halfway there.”
Bucky shook her hand, his grin softening. “Thanks. And congrats, by the way. She’s beautiful.”
“Want to ‘old her?” Jake asked suddenly, catching everyone off guard. He stepped closer, offering the baby to Bucky.
“Oh, uh…” Bucky’s eyes widened slightly, and he instinctively stepped back. “I’m not sure that’s a good idea.”
“You’ll be fine mate,” Jake assured him with a friendly smile. “She’s lighter than a ‘ag of flour. ‘ust support her head, and you’re golden.”
“Go on,” you encouraged gently, your voice filled with warmth. “She wont bite—yet.”
Reluctantly, Bucky nodded, his expression a mix of uncertainty and determination. Jake carefully handed Lucy over, and Bucky held her with the same precision and care he might handle a priceless artifact. His metal hand rested firmly under her body, supporting her weight as his flesh hand cradled her head.
For a moment, everything seemed to pause. Lucy stirred slightly, her tiny fist waving in the air before she settled again, and Bucky let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.
“She likes you,” Abby said softly, her teasing replaced with genuine warmth.
Bucky’s lips curved into a small, almost shy smile as he looked down at the baby in his arms. “She’s... so small,” he murmured, his voice full of wonder.
Your heart swelled at the sight. You hadn’t expected this, but seeing Bucky—calm, tender, and utterly captivated by your niece—was enough to make your chest ache with affection. You exchanged a quiet glance with Abby, her knowing smile mirroring your own.
“Well,” Jake said with a grin, “looks like Uncle Buck a natural.”
Bucky’s gaze flicked up, meeting yours with a hint of surprise at the title, but you just smiled softly, nodding in agreement. “Yeah,” you said. “He really is.”
Your younger cousins dragged him into a backyard cricket game, where he quickly became the star player despite his initial protests. Watching him laugh as the kids cheered his every move made your heart swell as you sat with your infant niece asleep on your shoulder.
As Christmas day turned into Christmas night and the endless buffet of festive eating turned into casual grazing under twinkling string lights, you found Bucky sitting on the back veranda staring out at the horizon where the sun dipped below the trees. You joined him, handing him a cold drink. You could see a mob of roos bouncing their way across the far paddock.
“It’s different, huh?” you asked, sitting beside him.
He nodded, his gaze distant. “Yeah. Different… but nice.” He glanced at you, a soft smile tugging at his lips. “Your family’s great.”
“They love you already,” you said, leaning your shoulder against his. “And I love seeing you like this—relaxed, happy.”
Bucky’s smile faded slightly, his brow furrowing. “It’s not something I’m used to,” he admitted. “Being around so much… joy. It’s good, though. I’m trying.”
You reached over, taking his hand in yours. “You’re doing great, Buck. And I’m proud of you.” Bucky glanced down at your hand in his, his thumb brushing over your knuckles as his expression softened. The quiet moment between you seemed to stretch, filled with the faint hum of cicadas and the distant laughter of your family inside the house.
“I didn’t think I’d fit in Doll,” he murmured, his voice low and almost hesitant. “I mean, this—your family, all this… normalcy. I wasn’t sure it was for me.”
You smiled, leaning into him just a little more. “You’re wrong, you know. You fit in just fine. Better than fine, actually. I think my dad’s ready to adopt you after that steak performance.”
A small laugh escaped him, a sound that was still rare enough to make your chest tighten with affection. “Yeah, your dad’s good people.”
“You’re good people,” you teased, nudging him lightly with your shoulder. “And, for the record, you’re doing a lot better than the time Uncle Rick burned half the backyard trying to light the BBQ.”
Bucky chuckled at that, the sound warming the cool night air. “Guess I’ve got that going for me.”
For a moment, the two of you simply sat there, watching the horizon as the last hints of sunlight disappeared and the stars began to blink into view. The quiet comfort between you felt like its own kind of holiday magic—simple, real, and grounding.
When he finally spoke again, his voice was quieter, more reflective. “Thanks for bringing me here. For… all of this.”
You turned to look at him, catching the vulnerability in his expression as he stared out at the stars. “You deserved it, Bucky,” you said softly. “You deserve every bit of this—every laugh, every hug, every moment of peace.”
His hand tightened slightly around yours, and when he turned his gaze to meet yours, there was something unspoken in his eyes—something raw and grateful. “You make it easier to believe that,” he said, barely above a whisper.
You smiled, leaning in to press a gentle kiss to his cheek. “Good. Because it’s true.”
The distant laughter of your family drifted out onto the porch, pulling both of you back to the present. Bucky glanced toward the house, his smile growing as he squeezed your hand. “So, when do I get my own honorary ugly Christmas shirt?”
You burst into laughter, shaking your head. “Oh, you’re in for it next year, Barnes. And it’s going to have tinsel.”
That night, after everyone else had gone to bed, you and Bucky found yourselves alone on the porch, the warm breeze carrying the scent countryside and flowers. The quiet intimacy of the moment wrapped around you both like a blanket.
Bucky reached out, brushing a strand of hair from your face. “You’ve given me something I didn’t think I’d ever have Doll,” he said quietly. “A home. A place I belong.”
Tears welled in your eyes as you leaned closer, pressing your forehead to his. “You are my home, Bucky. Always.” The kiss that followed was slow and tender, deepening as months of unspoken longing finally broke free. Bucky’s hands roamed your back, pulling you closer until you were both breathless. He scooped you into his arms, carrying you inside.

The more places I live the more I discover how fucking weird the weather is all up the west coast. I'm used to both SoCal and PNW weather systems now but what those both have in common is consistency. You will not see a 40 degree jump between two days in Seattle. You will not see a 40 degree difference ever really in San Diego.
But all the rest of you are living in some weird ass looney tunes world where it can snow one day and be 65 degrees and sunny the next and then be rainy and foggy the day after. In the tropical areas sometimes you randomly get a lightning storm in the middle of the day and you're just supposed to be okay with that.
How do you live like this? Do you just check the weather every single day? How do you make plans? You people are insane.

Ten of Santa's Favorite Tales You Should Add to Your Library to Maintain the Winter Holiday Spirit Year-Round
Originally posted on my blog: https://newbookcatsreads.blogspot.com/2024/12/ten-of-santas-favorite-tales-you-should.html
Despite the Christmas celebrations ending several days ago, I continue to nibble peppermint bark and sip hot chocolate until my blood resembles a concoction similar to a minty chocolate slush. Moreover, I continue to celebrate the winter holidays past a socially acceptable date and much later than any radio station will play "Jingle Bell Rock" or "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree." So, as a naturally curious reader craving holiday stories even after the winter holidays conclude, I can only imagine the fictional favorites behind the twinkling eyes, rosy cheeks, and full heart that is the grand figure behind the Christmas festivities.
Tumblr media
Although the year before and especially the days leading up to his Christmas flight are exceptionally busy as toys are prepared by elves and sleigh avionics are strategized by Claus's team of engineers and reindeer pilots, I can only assume that Santa's mind not only readies for a long flight but also craves stories as rich as his plates of cookies and as sweetly cozy as a crackling fire. Moreover, with Santa's identity majorly in folklore and the North Pole's chilling temperatures of -40 degrees Fahrenheit, it only makes sense that Santa has a library nestled between the toy workshop and the reindeer stable, of course. Of his library, I can only assume the ten books below would be his absolute favorites and include the fluffiest blankets, making these stories ever accessible to his elves, reindeer, and even his narwhal buddies--just as long as the books are kept in their mint conditions.
So, I present:
Ten Favorite Tales of Santa Claus You Should Add to Your Library to Automatically Make It Feel Like Christmas All-Year Round
Tumblr media
1. A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens
There’s no way even Ebenezer Scrooge would skip this holiday classic tale, especially as his redemption reminds readers of the real reason to celebrate -- through compassion and generosity for others. Also, honestly, who could resist cheering as Scrooge's icy heart melts like snow on a sunny morning?
2. The Polar Express by Chris Van Allsburg
No book hits closer to home for Santa than this train ride to the North Pole. The tale’s themes of belief and wonder make Santa’s beard curl with pride. He knows firsthand that the magic of Christmas begins in the heart, and this story puts it beautifully in black and white (and, in the North Pole's case, plenty of twinkling lights).
3. The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis
Winter without Christmas? Perish the thought!
A childhood favorite of mine, I would expect Santa to rejoice in Narnia’s return of hope and warmth as the kids save the world inside of a wardrobe. Plus, Santa makes a cameo in this book, gifting the Pevensie siblings their much-needed weapons. It’s a reminder that he’s not just about toys but courage, too.
4. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
Santa is all about the spirit of giving, and no book embodies this better than Alcott's story of the March sisters. Meg, Jo, Beth, and Amy teach readers that kindness and love are the greatest gifts. I can imagine, particularly during the busy holiday preparations, Santa needs a heartwarming tale now and then to remind him of the strength of family, and this would be it. Moreover, if Santa wanted to forgo reading the large tome, I heard the 2019 movie was as great as any plate of chocolate chip cookies with a side of milk.
5. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone by J.K. Rowling
Similar to anyone anticipating the arrival of their Hogwarts letter, Santa most certainly cannot resist a little magic beyond the North Pole. This story of friendship and courage is certainly a bestseller among Santa's elves, and Santa must have Dumbledore on speed-dial as they are both wise, bearded, and partial to good cheer. Regardless of any of the stories mentioned today, Harry Potter and his friends never disappoint.
6. The Night Circus by Erin Morgenstern
Santa is no stranger to the enchantment of hidden wonders, and the mysterious black-and-white circus resonates with the air of excitement he sprinkles on Christmas Eve. Le Cirque des Rêves, with its midnight charms and breathtaking spectacles, feels like the grown-up version of peeking into Santa’s own bag of tricks. Just be careful if you're reaching for coal since all readers should be on the "Nice" list this year and the next!
7. Wonder by R.J. Palacio
“Choose kind” might as well be one of Santa’s workshop rules. This heartfelt tale of August Pullman’s journey reminds Santa that the world’s best gifts are the intangible ones: empathy, understanding, and acceptance. Not just for young readers, this story is for everyone who believes kindness can change the world--which should be Santa’s mantra if tires of his "Ho, ho, ho!" chant.
8. The Snow Child by Eowyn Ivey
Set in the icy landscape of Alaska, this tale is as delicate as frost on a windowpane. Santa would love how it echoes the myths of his own origin—a blend of mystery, loneliness, and love. The Snow Child’s subtle magic is the kind Santa uses to cover his sleigh tracks with snow, and the story is perfectly suited for those reading in a cozy armchair with a mug of minty hot chocolate.
9. The Nutcracker and the Mouse King by E.T.A. Hoffmann
No festive reading list is complete without this gem or its ballet adaptations. From sugar plum fairies to daring toy soldiers, this book embodies the enchantment of Christmas as a nutcracker soldier comes alive to protect a young girl from evil mice. Santa’s inner child rejoices at the whimsy and adventure that crackles through each page, and I will certainly have these classic tunes in my background for a long while.
10. Followed by Frost by Charlie N. Holmberg
If a fan of young adult fiction and wintery vibes, this fantasy would undoubtedly warm Santa's heart. This enchanting tale of Smitha, cursed to be followed by an eternal winter, is the perfect snowstorm of magic, redemption, and hope. Throughout the challenges designed for initially self-centered Smitha, the teenager inspires kindness and generosity in all as she delivers strength and compassion to those around her--a goal similar to Santa's on Christmas Eve.
- - -
As the best time of the year to snuggle with a great book, a fluffy cat--if not allergic to pet dander--, and a warm overpriced beverage, each of these books slays for unique reasons—stories of redemption, magic, joy, and even the simple pleasures of a quiet winter night. So, as you deck your shelves this holiday season, maybe take a page from Santa’s reading list. Afterall, it's the most read-erful time of the year!

enjoyed some saturday pancakes // hello nice to see you leg muscles i’ve been working on you 👋🏼 // my favorite neighborhood cat is back and kept me company while doing my warm up drills
SPRING TIME BABY!! 🌞🌷🌱 except we’re getting snow tomorrow and nothing has sprouted or bloomed. it was like 40 degrees and sunny, and i had to change after the picture to take off the vest but put on a slightly thicker long sleeve. it was GORGEOUS and it was such a nice run. i decided to check out a new road nearby that has consistent rolling hills and they were hard but fun! i was actively trying hard to slow myself down to keep it at an easy pace and i think i succeeded for the most part except at the last mile. i think i’m always going to kick it at the last mile, and that’s just me. splits were 11:02/10:39/9:19. i am impressed that i am starting slow and increasing pace along the run. i’ve always been the kind of runner that pressed go on the watch, went way too fast, and would inevitably blow up later in the run or need to take walking breaks. i feel like i approach running with a lot more knowledge and intent now than i did in the past and excited to see where it takes me!

Antarctica at her finest!
January 19
Tumblr media
Glorious!! A sunny, blue skied, 40 degree day at Port Lockroy on Goudier Island. The staff of the island's functioning British Base Station lectured us on their missions of historic preservation and scientific research in this continually occupied post since 1944.
Tumblr media
Our morning Zodiac rounded the island's glacier fields, pausing at a penguin rookery to watch their antics, for seal sightings and to view the numerous schools of penguins popping up as they escorted our Zodiac across the bay.
Our afternoon snow hike at Damoy Point in the Dorian Bay, started at a small outpost, long since abandoned, but preserved as if travelers there were out for the day. Continuing along the snowy path, we reached the top of a crest with a Penguin rookery and view of two bays with large floating icebergs. Unspeakably beautiful.
Tumblr media
A backdrop of the crystal blue sky , the sun's reflection enhancing the glacier's aqua undertones and sparkling off the sea...all impossible to capture.....so instead, I let the magnificence sink into my soul.

Today in Politics, 12/23/24 Part 2 Ron Filipkowski
… Trump shocked MAGA by saying that he would endorse Republican Karrin Taylor Robson for Governor of Arizona if she runs. The familiar pattern followed of MAGA influencers slamming the pick, now Trump either walks it back after hearing from enough of them or chooses to ignore the noise because whatever deal he has behind the scenes to do this is too good to pass up.
… Laura Loomer: “Hey, President Trump. Why did you endorse Taylor Robson? Did none of your transition team ‘vetters’ let you know that Karrin was one of Ruben Gallego’s biggest bundlers? Why would a woman who raised money for Gallego who is pro open borders and pro mass amnesty get your endorsement? Gallego wanted you to be jailed and celebrated when you were indicted, and the woman you endorsed today was one of his biggest campaign fundraisers.”
… She then posted a screen shot which from Ruben Gallego when he confirmed that Robson did major fundraising for him. And Trump just endorsed her to be the Republican nominee for governor of AZ in 2026. He might hear from Kari Lake on this one, in addition to Loomer. I know I wouldn’t want the two of them after me.
… Rand Paul put out his annual Christmas rant, which he calls his Festivus, in a lengthy thread on X. In it he addressed Chuck Schumer mocking him on the Senate floor Friday night after his amendment to raise the Social Security retirement age to 70 only got 3 votes: “Chuck was trying to joke with me that my amendment to fix Social Security only got 3 votes. Well Chuck, that’s 3 people who won’t be sad when you are no longer leader in January.”
… More Rand: “I don’t want to tell Mitch McConnell it’s time to retire, but his best job offer so far is a reboot of Tales from the Crypt.”
… President Biden commuted almost all the death sentences of federal inmates to life in prison (37 out of 40). Pope Francis reportedly lobbied Biden to make the commutations, per Vatican News. The three who did not have their death sentences commuted to life were the Boston Marathon Bomber, the mass murderers at the Mother Emanuel Church in Charleston and Tree of Life Synagogue.
… Democrats against capital punishment are applauding the commutations. Republicans are posting photos of murder victims, many of which were children, with blurbs detailing how they were killed with information about the inmate killers.
… The Republican talking point on the commutations: “Joe Biden did this to overcompensate for pardoning Hunter Biden.” The argument is basically that some anti-death penalty Democrats were not happy with the Hunter pardon so he did this to make them happy. Pretty weak stuff. Talking about the details of the crimes they committed is a hell of a lot more effective politically than bringing Hunter into it.
… But they bring Hunter into everything.
… Sen Tom Cotton said that Trump should reverse the commutations: “Contracts, wills, and other legal actions are null and void if a party is mentally incompetent, as Joe Biden obviously is. Congress and the Trump DOJ should investigate whether these pardons for depraved murderers are binding.” (Just to clarify, these are commutations from death to life, not pardons).
… Vice Chair of the Federal Reserve Michael Barr has reportedly sought legal counsel to prepare for the possibility that Trump may seek to fire the Biden appointee before his term expires in July 2026, according to a report by Reuters. The law provides that fed governors can only be fired from their terms early for “just cause,” but does not say whether the Chair or Vice Chair can be demoted by the president from those positions without cause.
… We are flying to Florida for family Christmas to see our 5 kids who still live where they were born and raised, and my parents, so no column until Friday night. My first time returning to Florida after moving to Maine in June. It will be great to see family again and go from 10 degrees and snow tomorrow to 76 and sunny. But that is the only thing I like about going back to Florida.
Meidas+ is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support my work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
… Mitt Romney’s replacement in the Senate, Republican John Curtis, says he intends to follow in Romney’s footsteps and remain a voice independent from Trump in the party: “I got more votes than him in Utah. Does that give me a mandate? I think me speaking my mind and being up front makes the president a better president.
… More Curtis: “Right now I’m reviewing his nominees and people keep forgetting the “advice” part of “advice and consent.” I cant advise the president unless I have investigated everything about these people. Anybody who wants to give me heat for doing my job, bring it on.”
… Yeah so, Trump isn’t interested in any of that. He expects obedience. Period. Curtis is in for a bumpy ride. We will see if he digs in and hold on to his principles or ...

Ancardia's Unusual Animals--the Snow Snake
Classification: Beast (squamate)
Habitat: The grasslands, scrubs and forested regions of Tvearban
A truly unique member of the squamates, the snow snake is one of the few large exothermic reptiles adapted to spend most of its life out and about in the cold reaches of Tvearban. Adults measure approximately 1.5 to 2 meters in length and are the thickness of a human’s wrist (not counting the flared scales). An adult on a sunny day can tolerate temperatures hovering above freezing by making use of the strange adaptation that is its layered, flared scales on the top three quarters of its body, which act as both insulation from heat loss and as biological solar panels which capture the heat of sunlight and transfer it to the blood vessels below the root of each scale, enabling a passive heating as the snow snake travels about. Despite its heating system, it is still usually very sluggish in such cold conditions, and it tends to require cooling off if temperatures in its environment reach over 27 degrees Celsius. In summer months, the snow snake tends to spend much of its time in caves where the air is more tolerable for them, and are noted for being primarily bat-hunters during the short arctic summer. In transitional times when the temperature cools off, the snow snake travels widely, hunting a variety of animals such as lemmings, snow hares, squirrels and occasional birds. In the depths of winter when it drops below freezing, the snow snake employs its signature survival technique of burrowing into snowdrifts to insulate and conserve their heat before entering a torpor state. This state often lasts about three weeks, and in between bouts of this the snow snake will very slowly slither its way around its territory until it has located a cavern site for the spring breeding season; in the weeks leading up to the main thaw, snow snakes have congregated in larger caverns en masse, and will soon form breeding balls.
Snow snakes from the same breeding ball will all lay their eggs in protected crevices communally in the rear portion of the same cavern some two months later before departing for their normal haunts in the springtime. Some of these eggs may be taken by larger carnivorous bats, or cave crickets, or rarely scavenging foxes and birds that make their way into the caves, but the sheer density of them tends to ensure that at least 50% will make it to hatching time. After two months of incubation, the tiny snow snakes emerge and spend their first year exclusively in the caves, as they have not developed the flared scales that enable adults to tolerate the lower temperatures. They primarily feed on small arthropods such as crickets, roaches, and centipedes in this year, and grow from nine-centimeter newborns to 40-centimeter adolescents in this time, growing in their signature scales in their last molt before the next spring. Snow snakes are considered full adults by the end of their second year, and the typical lifespan of a snow snake is between 12 and 20 years. Some predators of the snow snake adults include polar and brown bears, arctic wolves, large eagles, and various local humanoids such as frost giants, hill giants, Islydweragh and northern groups of humans. The shingle-scaled hides are prized by some groups for making windbreakers and hoods that resist the weather and moisture like few other natural materials, and usually are paired with fox or wolf fur to line the interior to maximize the insulation. Snow snake venom is not particularly lethal, though it is still a danger to humanoids that choose to hunt them or who stumble upon one accidentally—though the only known fatalities from snow snake bites have been spelunkers who have slipped into pits containing masses of the juveniles (which led to the young members of this species to once erroneously be thought a different species of “pit viper”).
