i definitely feel lucky to be in a state like RI, and know that our representatives in congress legitimately have our backs, but i know we still need to buckle up and stay strong in the face of the new administration, especially given the conservative swing across the country, even RI, with folks in our state legislature moving right on trans issues and abortion (though they're no Patricia Morgan).
we still need to fight to make sure Little Rhody can stand strong against MAGA, and fulfill our founding concepts of free expression and a safe haven.
in honor of MLK day -- we shall overcome.

One of the most important things to unpack and unlearn when you’re part of a white supremacy saturated society (i.e. the global north) and especially if you were raised in an intensified form of it (evangelicism, right wing politics, explicit racism) is the urge to punish and take revenge.
It manifests in our lives all the time and it is inherently destructive. It makes relationships and interactions adversarial for no good reason. It undermines cooperation and good civic order. It worsens some types of crime. It creates trauma, especially in children.
Imagine approaching unexpected or unacceptable behavior from a perspective of "how can this be stopped, and prevented" instead of "you’re going to regret this!”
Imagine dealing with a problem or conflict from the perspective of “how can this be solved in a way that is just and restorative” instead of “the people who caused this are going to pay.”
How much would that change you? How much would that have changed for you?

and it's so ironic that people are protesting American "censorship" and control by going to an app LITERALLY called "Little Red Book."
like come on, critical thinking skills. but i guess it's presumptuous for me to assume that americans know about the cultural revolution...
It’s so hilarious to me that people spent all this time the past year and a half boycotting and protesting Israeli goods, and now they’re flocking to RedNote in the wake of TikTok being possibly banned.
China has literally one of the worst industrialized oppression of Muslims on the planet. Like actual internment camps, forced labor, apartheid, and forced sterilization. Like r u serious.

Israel did honor that ceasefire deal, Hezbollah broke it by transporting artillery into the demilitarized zone, and Israel struck that artillery directly.
I am worried that phases 2 and 3 will take a long time to get to.
CEASEFIRE DEAL IS HAPPENING CONFIRMED!!!!
I am so happy it's finally happening.

“average person eats 3 spiders a year” factoid actualy just statistical error. average person eats 0 spiders per year. Spiders Georg, who lives in cave & eats over 10,000 each day, is an outlier adn should not have been counted

yeah, i imagine it will be similar to the situation with the Lebanon ceasefire, where Hezbollah was moving artillery towards Israel outside of the demilitarized zone and they exchanged fire for a minute. Probably it will be a bit on-and-off again. And yeah, PA has pay-for-slay, but ultimately they are in direct opposition with Hamas, and haven't attacked Israel with missiles from the West Bank, so, a step forward but definitely not a sign of peace, per se.
I don't think another Oct 7 will happen, but I wouldn't be surprised with a level of instability and attacks a bit higher than pre-Oct 7, whether it's isolated Hamas attacks, Hezbollah/Houthi flurries, or from Iran directly. And we'll see about Syria, but they're in no shape to start a war right now.
For the exile thing, I was looking at the Washington Post article, but I don't know how many qualified for that, because I know a lot of terrorists will end up back in Gaza.
It looks like a hostage and ceasefire deal has been reached, and I have so, so many thoughts.
First is the obvious: 33 hostages, both dead and alive, will (B”H) be released in phase 1 of the deal. Amazing, amazing, amazing. We’re finally seeing so many of our own return home, and I can only imagine how excited the hostages’ families are to hear that loved ones will be returned. They’ll finally be able to get proper treatment or proper burials.
However, there’s the other part of the deal: 1000 Palestinian prisoners being released. This is something we’ve seen before when it comes to hostage deals, like the case with Gilad Shalit, wherein a single person is traded for tens of others. Prisoners. People facing life sentences. People Hamas need right now to refill their ranks.
And that’s not the only issue I have with this deal. From what I’ve been told, Hamas will basically be let off the hook and the PA will be given a foothold. Make no mistake, the PA is still an Islamic extremist group governed by a Holocaust denier and totally garbage person. They’re barely better than Hamas. But the fact that they’re just leaving Hamas with little more than a slap on the wrist??? We’ve seen this before, and it very well could lead to more terror down the road. Hell, Israel literally treated Sinwar for a deadly brain tumor years ago, and he went on to plan and help perpetrate October 7th! Hamas knows what Israel will do to bring its people home. They hardly need to lift a finger while the world simply puts pressure on the Jewish state.
As for the other phases of the plan, I’m not holding my breath. Hamas and other jihadist groups like them are known to not follow through with such deals. I give them a few hours of ceasefire before they break it.
So, those are my thoughts as a diaspora Jew. I’m both happy for and scared for Israel. I want our hostages home, I want the war to end and I want there to be peace. But it’s so, so hard to see the end of the road when past history has taught us to never trust Hamas or their ilk.

yeah this is just phase one, and they'll supposedly go directly into talks on stage two and then stage three.
obviously this is a very lopsided deal that favors Hamas, but it is a necessary deal that will bring home 33 hostages, including Kfir Bibas. That's 33 hostages for 1000 prisoners, but the biggest murderers will not be able to live in Gaza, Israel, or the West Bank which is an important asterisk to that point
PA taking over control from Hamas in Gaza is a huuuuuge step forward too, if it happens.

i'm trying to figure out why he's so unpopular... i know there's party infighting, but that won't change with a new party leader. I know the economy is crazy, but that's because of COVID and Trudeau survived through the worst of that crisis...
i understand wanting something new, but he already promised not to run for reelection.
can someone tell me why Trudeau had to resign?
