Ichi the Witch ch.11 thoughts
[WitchCon 2024]
(Topics: praise - comedy, narrative progression, world building, thematic analysis - freedom vs. order, predictions)
Make 'Em Laugh
Y'know, for a chapter that was like...90% political dialogue and exposition, this still managed to end up being one of the funnier chapters so far: Desscaras' report being a comic book that makes her look like the hero and Shirabedonna just throwing it away, Ichi straight up leaving the Zoom call to get food, Togeice goofing up her dramatic entrance; and that's not even every funny bit from this chapter
Handled wrong, this could have come off as a super dry and meandering chapter, but for the sake of setting up the conflict of revealing Ichi's existence to the world, I think an in-depth analysis of both sides of the argument was necessary
Better to Ask Permission than Forgiveness
While I agree with Togeice that Shirabedonna's conclusions are being made on too few datapoints (one grateful village and three unusually quick hunts in only two weeks), I'm also inclined to agree with Shirabedonna that this is a tricky situation to maintain
The longer Mantinel tries to hide Ichi, the more contradictions and public distrust are bound to pile up. Coming up with excuses later to explain every little detail will just make discussing it more difficult, and Mantinel will only look more suspicious. On the other hand, coming clean now less than a month in should be fairly understandable given the implications of Ichi being a male Witch that acquired Uroro - some people will be mad, sure, but most people would probably be forgiving of the caution exercised
More than that, though, Mantinel's acquisition of the first male Witch would do wonders for their reputation, as that's a historic discovery. Even if he ends up being dangerous, the narrative wouldn't be too hard to spin in Mantinel's favor, as no one could have predicted how a male Witch would behave
The fun thing about this argument to me, though, is the acknowledgment of other Witch organizations
Frog in the Well
We haven't been shown a world map or anything yet, so we don't really have any sense of scale to this world, but I wouldn't have been too surprised either way if either Mantinel had a monopoly on Witch administration or if they were just one of many such organizations
The acknowledgment of an equivalent of Japan last week was a good clue that there was more to this world than...whatever this one country is called, but we still know nothing about this fantasy-Japan's society other than that they still have sashimi
Do they have their own Witches Association? Do they even have Magiks there in the first place, or are they endemic to the current focus country?
Black Clover kept expanding to reveal that other nations had different relationships with magic, while JJK revealed that Curses pretty much only exist in Japan for...some reason. I would imagine that this is more like the former, but the realization that one nation is hoarding the concept of magic would be pretty wild, wouldn't it?
Then there's the fact that ch.1 told us that there's only a 0.001% chance of a man being able to acquire magic even if he did have the capacity to pass a trial and physically handle casting spells. That seems like a low number, but...it's one in a thousand
For every thousand men, one of them has the capacity to acquire magic. Presumably this number is compounded by the ability to use it, since the narration said there were so many other factors that had to line up perfectly first, but that just means that the chances of finding another man with the potential to overcome those factors aren't actually all that slim
EDIT: It's been brought to my attention that I goofed the math and this is one in a hundred thousand, but my point stands! I thought it was going to be like one in a million or even a billion, and it ended up being a lot more generous than I anticipated! In our world, that would still be 40,000 men with the capacity for magic!
In other words, it's only a matter of time until another male Witch is found
From there, the method for cultivating male Witches will likely start to become more widespread, and eventually the proportion of female to male Witches should approach an equilibrium
That's probably looking too far ahead, though. That's the kind of thing that would probably take several generations to pass, so while we may have like...a dozen male Witches by the end, they probably won't be a normal part of Witch society until a far-flung epilogue
For now, I'd like to focus on the worldbuilding that we actually received this chapter: that Ichi's acquisition rate is ridiculous
Gotta Go Fast
Ichi has three Magiks under his belt in less than two weeks, and Shirabedonna tells us that one week is on the fast end for a hunt. That seems especially strange to me, since one of the first trials we're ever told of was only set for an hour, but I suppose that figure is based on the number of attempts and the prep-time? It's easy to assume "oh, they got it one," but this statement gives the impression that almost no one acquires a Magik on their first try
I do think it kind of skews our perceptions to tell us the upper and lower limits of one week and ten years without also giving us an average or at least a mean. All she says is "some take X amount of time," like that means anything statistically...
It also doesn't help that the first hunt we actually saw would have been over almost immediately had it not been for the circumstances: Desscaras immediately stabbed Uroro's heart, and only failed to pierce it because she was a woman. Now, Desscaras is likely an outlier herself because she's ostensibly the strongest living Witch, but sub-10 minutes is nowhere near a full week!
Again, it's entirely possible that the hunt for Uroro was on a constant timer since Mantinel first started trying, so that would be an extreme circumstance no matter what. I suppose in a sense that would mean Ichi has the record for clearing both the shortest and longest hunts?
But just being fast or lucky doesn't make Ichi an expert, and it's only a matter of time until he hits a wall where his unique perspective fails to compensate for his lack of experience in the field he's so suddenly found himself in
Rising to the Level of Your Incompetence
Togeice is being presented as morally incorrect here, with her talk of reforming Ichi into a "proper Witch" being accompanied by a vision of all of Ichi's best qualities being sanded down to a bland scholarly appearance, but that doesn't mean that she doesn't have a point
Ichi's lack of experience makes him something akin to an outsider artist, which is what allows him to discover unconventional methods within the field, but it also means that he's not familiar with the pitfalls of the profession. Ichi took Hisame's challenge in a different direction than what was intended by the rules; it worked out, but if Hisame hadn't been impressed with this loophole, then that gamble would've gotten everyone present killed. Since she expressed that she wanted to attack another village as a palette cleanser, it's entirely possible that she could have taken this approach as an insult and gone on an even worse rampage after the fact
In fact, Ichi going straight for attacking Hisame could have resulted in her not even bothering to issue her trial, which would have effectively made her invincible in the resulting combat encounter. Perhaps Magiks don't work that way and they have to share their trial in order to maintain their power, but there's no precedent for that yet, so Ichi's ignorant and rash behavior could have sabotaged the entire mission
There's also the possibility that Ichi will continue to acquire stronger and stronger spells that he's less and less equipped to control and will cause some kind of huge disaster. He already used Parthion to create an entire new ecosystem on Druid Mountain, which could well have untold consequences on the local wildlife and nearby settlements, so what's to stop him from naively trying to save a desert village with Poltata and just washing them all away?
Togeice's desire to force her vision of order onto Ichi is obviously wrong and potentially detrimental to Ichi's value, but she is right that he's not capable of wielding his powers effectively or responsibly. Even if Ichi is a perfectly moral and upstanding Witch, if his trump card will only result in him being rendered unconscious for three days, then he's only going to be a liability when the time comes to use it against a major threat
The goal then should be to cultivate Ichi's sense of freedom and experience using magic while also giving him a clear sense of the responsibility that he carries. Fortunately, he's already demonstrated the capacity for that with his strict adherence to Death for Death, but unless he can prove to Togeice that he already has the discipline she's looking for, she won't be able to trust such an unknown with her back
Fortunately, the upcoming challenge provides the perfect opportunity for Togeice to get to know Ichi
Just a Little Guy
It was pointed out to me by @wickedsick that because the mushroom Magik isn't a human-hater, it likely doesn't hold any ill intent towards humans and doesn't go out of his way to hurt them, and therefore shouldn't trigger Death for Death. This would likely prevent Ichi from harming it, and in turn give Togeice the opportunity to take the win
The way I see it, there's five ways that this could go
Ichi loses because the mushroom isn't hurting anyone and he can't bring himself to hunt it -> school arc, Ichi learns valuable lessons, though he doesn't fundamentally change the way that Togeice wants him to
Ichi is just hopelessly outclassed and decides he has plenty to learn from Togeice and Mantinel -> same outcome as above
The circumstances of Ichi's refusal to hunt the mushroom somehow prove to Togeice that he's already plenty disciplined -> she wins, but still lets him go free because she doesn't believe she has anything to teach him after all
The nature of the trial doesn't necessitate Death for Death, and Ichi wins solely through his specific skillset -> Togeice realizes that she was not equipped for this specific scenario and different approaches will always be necessary for different circumstances, so she drops her objection
Togeice accidentally goads the mushroom into triggering Death for Death and realizes that it was her irresponsibility that endangered people, not Ichi's -> same outcome as above
For sure, there are more nuanced outcomes available, but those seem like the most likely either for developing the themes of the story or driving the plot in a specific direction. I'm definitely open to whichever route Nishi chooses to take, as I think that the two broadest outcomes of Ichi going or not going to school both provide interesting opportunities for the story going forward. Whichever she chooses, I have faith in Nishi that it'll be a fun time
Until next time, let's enjoy life!

I have personal paid readings available which you can fill out the form here so tips, bookings & feedback are highly appreciated considering i plan to do this for a living!
decks used: Disney Villains Tarot & Dark Wood Tarot & Pink Tarot & Killstar ( or as we lovingly call it Memento Mori ) Tarot & Horror Tarot & GANGSTA. Tarot.
Pile 1: You have Justice! First things first is the most obvious in terms of synchronicities: the movie Big Hero 6 may have some significance to you, or East Asian culture, particularly Japanese culture. You may either live in Japan or have traveled to or plan to travel to Japan. You may be born in San Francisco, California, or California as a whole may also be significant to you or you may be American. When I look at this card, my first intuitive thought is that you may be worried about the state of the world right now, and honestly, I wouldn't even blame you, so am I, but I need you to know that things are not hopeless. If you raise your voice and spread awareness to things that matter to you like the way things are going right now and you genuinely care about other people, then you're doing the right thing. You yourself could be an activist or at the very least if you're not officially one, you could care greatly about social justice. The number 11 could be significant to you. Justice is ruled by Libra so you may have those placements or someone you know or someone important to you could have those placements. On a less grander scale, I can see something being made right for you in a situation that's been going on in your life, I'm specifically seeing for a lot of you this could be a relationship - I'm mostly getting romantic relationships here but it could be a friendship dynamic - gone wrong or someone who refused to hire you for whatever reason. You'll likely either reconcile with someone or alternatively for some of you, you could be getting a better offer. Regardless, though, if this resonates with you, congrats, Pile 1, I'm so happy for you!!
Pile 2: You have The High Priestess! You may be intuitively drawn to the occult or your faith, should you have one, right now, and you may be isolating to look at the situations in your life introspectively. The color green may be significant to you. A feminine energy may be significant (it doesn't necessarily have to be a woman!), whether it's a mother, a sister, a girlfriend, an elderly woman, an ancestor of yours or maybe even a feminine deity who wants to reach out to you. You yourself may be interested into getting into tarot and I say if that applies to you, go for it! The number 2 may be significant, it may be a date of the month that's significant, something could happen in 2 days or 2 weeks or 2 months, or, alternatively, since February is the second month of the year, something important could be happening this February! Cancer, Scorpio & Pisces may be significant, you may have those in your placements or someone you know may have those placements considering its ruled by the Moon.
Pile 3: You have Strength! This is completely random but I'm getting that at least some of you who get this card and picked this pile are furries, otherkin, alterhuman and/or someone who has animal deities that they follow. Some of you may literally be lionkind if you're otherkin or you may have a lion as a fursona if you're a furry or if you are a system, you may have a system member who's a lion. You may also be neurodivergent, I'm getting for a lot of y'all autistic specifically, considering the infinity symbol. The color pink may be significant to you because this is my pink tarot deck. I'm getting that if you practice and believe in crystal healing, get some rose quartz, especially if you want to attract love, especially romantic love, into your life. Lions may pose some significance to you, and if not lions, then felines. You yourself may have a cat. You may be spending more time with your cats. The Lion King may be significant. For very few of you you may actually work with wild animals, especially big cats, which if that's the case that's literally so cool! This was what I read for someone last month when I told y'all that you'd have to be resilient in something you're doing because someone may be testing your patience and I'm getting that again. Make sure to set healthy boundaries with someone if necessary! Leo may be significant, whether you have those in your natal chart or someone you know has those placements. The number 8 could be significant, something could happen in 8 days which is little over a week from when you're reading this. This is random, too, but I'm getting an intuitive hit to buy flowers for yourself if you're alone by yourself on Valentine's Day if you're reading this by the time this post is written. Someone may want to give you flowers, or flowers in general may be significant to you. Regardless, though, I know for a fact that you'll be slaying anyway no matter what you do! SLAY!
Pile 4: You have The World! I'm immediately getting that you're about to or already have completed a cycle in your life and to that I say congratulations, Pile 4!! I'm getting a ringing in my right ear so that just confirms it!! Maybe you've FINALLY managed to achieve something you've wanted to do, maybe you're feeling a little more at ease in this new chapter in your life. For some of you I'm getting that you may have moved to a new place! If that applies, that's awesome, Pile 4!! The number 21 could be significant, you yourself could be 21 or something could happen on the 21st of a month. The Earth element rules The World may be significant, so Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn may be significant to you, and since Saturn rules The World, Capricorn and Aquarius may also be significant to you, whether you have any of those placements yourself, or someone else you know may have them. The symbol of Ouroboros may be significant to you, too. Regardless, though, I say y'all are doing wonderfully and I'm hoping y'all will stay on the top of the world !!
Pile 5: You have The Chariot! You may be struggling to move forward with a decision you've made or maybe even debating on what to choose. Usually in the traditional Rider Waite tarot there's two horses representing two choices, that isn't present here as there's only one horse here. To that I say follow your heart and your intuition most of all and it won't lead you astray. I'm getting this... very specific message for a lot of you, but I need y'all to know this, okay? It's okay to leave the past behind. It's okay to let go. Horses may be of significance to you. For very few of you I'm getting you may be equestrians or have ancestors who were equestrians, notably Mongolians and Scythians or any of the Plains Turtle Island Indigenous Nations, but that definitely won't apply to everyone. For some of you the Celtic deity Epona or perhaps even The Legend of Zelda may be significant because I'm getting The Legend Of Zelda: Wind Waker's opening theme playing in my head ehehe. The Chariot is ruled by Cancer so Cancer may be significant to you, and the number 7 may be significant, something could be happening a week from now when you're reading this which is what I'm getting for a lot of you and for others your birthday could be the 7th of a month, alternatively, you could be born in July. You've got this!
Pile 6: You have The Empress! HOOO BOY I'm getting for a lot of you who picked this pile, y'all may be lesbians and/or sapphics of some kind because I just got, like, psychically blasted in the face with some really gay shit and specifically sapphic yearning LMAO. I don't know, I'm just getting that vibe and not just from the character Gina Paulklee from GANGSTA. herself who she herself is canonically a lesbian/sapphic. For a few of you, the animanga series GANGSTA. may be significant to you, or you may want to read/watch it as you may find some messages in there that may be important to you. For some of y'all, a strong maternal figure could be significant like a mother, an aunt or even a deity who's really powerful who may be trying to reach out... I'm getting Athena (Hellenismos) and Sekhmet (Kemeticism) for a lot of y'all, and for fewer of you, I'm getting Amaterasu (Shinto), Hera (Hellenismos), Hathor (Kemeticism), the Morrigan (Celtic Paganism), Freyja (Asatru), Oshun (Yoruba Ifa, Candomble & Santeria, Black/Afro-Latine exclusive, if you're nonblack don't touch!), and Sky Woman (Huron-Iroquois/Haudenosaunee, if you're nonnative or not a member of any of these nations don't touch!) so any of these deities may be significant to you. If it doesn't apply, let it fly. You could be in your divine feminine energy (everyone has this energy inside them regardless of gender, sex, orientation or presentation!) and stepping into your own personal power. Some of y'all may be exploring sensuality and your own sexuality or for any of my lesbians/sapphics in this pile, you may be getting a girlfriend. This my baddie pile and I don't necessarily mean in an Instagram baddie way (and you don't have to be a woman to be a baddie!) although you could fit or like that aesthetic, but I moreso mean in the sense that you're gaining confidence in yourself and what you do, and in other words, you really are That Bitch TM & I'm so happy for y'all if that applies !! The Earth element rules The Empress so that may be significant, so Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn may be significant to you, and Venus rules The Empress and for some of y'all I'm getting that Aphrodite (Hellenismos) and/or Venus (Religio Romana) literally may be wanting to reach out to you to work with you if you don't already. The number 3 may also be significant, so something could be happening in March as its the third month of the year and as I'm posting this the month after this month, alternatively, the 3rd of a month may be significant, or something could be happening in 3 days from now, or weeks or months, but I'm getting for y'all it's likely 3 days. With that said, that's about all I have for your reading, thank you so much for being here!

Can you expand on what you mean by Baron being "too cool" to really fit a horror monster? It's a very interesting concept and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Is it that they're too active/involved/tangible and it detracts from their scariness?
I feel like I should preface this with a wall of disclaimers lmao 1/I am a hardcore, down-to-the-marrow, avid, deeply sincere horror enthusiast, esp. horror creatures. this usually means my mileage is vastly different from the average populace's, and my scaredy bone has been disintegrated by longterm exposure. most things in a piece of horror media won't scare me! so I practically never use that on its own as the scale to talk abt horror experiences, but when something does scare me it's always a special occasion to be treasured. 2/canon d20 is never really meant to be horror horror, and for good reasons: it doesn't fit the company's output, it takes a kind of carelessness in production estimation that is always a huge risk, it's often vulnerable in a way that kinda goes against how TTRPGs usually facilitates vulnerability, and for most people it's just! stressful! d20, even with the "horror-themed" seasons, generally just plays with horror tropes and stays focused in its goal of being a comedy improv tabletop theater show. 3/fantasy high's chosen system is DnD, which as I've mentioned before is before all a combat-based game system, which means the magic circle of play is drawn based on stats that facilitate and prioritize combat. want or not this affects every interaction you have in the game, and given fantasy high's concept from the ground up (everyone's going to school of DnD stuff to get better at DnD) it's doubly relevant. 4/This Is Fine I have no quarrel with this. my meters are internal, I do not ask this show to be anything it doesn't advertise itself to be, and what it is is fucking great! I like it! when I expand on this ask's question it will be like a physicist going insane in a lab. that's the mindset we're going in with.
disclaimers done. my stance on horror as a genre is that it's a utility genre rather than a content genre or a demographic genre; it is the discard of narratives. it's the trash pile. horror, above being scary, is about being ugly and messy, it's the cracks on the ground any story inevitably steps over to stay a genre that isn't horror. the genre's been around long enough to develop a codex and a general language that medias and makers and enthusiasts of the genre can use to talk about and build onto, but if you go into individual pieces there's really no unifying Horror Story. one person's beautiful life can be another's horror story, it's just how it is.
this makes The Monster a deeply intriguing piece of the genre. thing is a monster is in a decent percentage of any story - it's just when the antagonist force steps into something past a certain line traced out in the story's world. monstrousness is in pretty much every western fantasy story, it's in any story with a hero and something to vanquish or win; more than anything it's a proxy of that thing up there. the line in a narrative's world. the monster is the guard of the unknown lands, where heroic, civilized people don't tread.
what does this mean in the context of horror? the genre is about that perceived lawlessness, that "unknown land" so to say. we're in the monster's home. that's the literary context that we often walk into a horror piece with; the monster knows more than you about where you are. it may not understand you, but it holds more information than you, and with that it moves swifter than you, has more covered than you, and is more assured in its existence in this context than you. it's a struggle to catch up to it, it's nigh impossible to get one over it, and you're never sure it'll 100% work, because you just don't have the information necessary to.
with that framing you can kinda see where I'm coming from here: horror's often about the breaking of rules. I always think a monster's most effective when it breaks well-established rules of both existence and visual storytelling. think Possum (2018) or Undertale's Omega Flowey or the Xenomorph Queen - unique change in medium, unique change in graphic, unique change in design language, etc. in that sense I actually really like how canon baron plays out: they don't really function like anything else in the fantasy high universe, the bad kids have not managed to kill them when they've felled literal gods, their domain in fhjy literally introduces new mechanics to encompass their existence! from an experience design standpoint they slap mad shit. BUT! I can't help finding their character, like as a character riz (and the other bad kids, eventually) interact with, to be very... coherent? in design. this is kinda hard for me to articulate in words, it's more often a sense you get once you've looked at enough of these scrumptious fuckers, their general design and the way they show up is just kinda too clean, so to say. always kinda newly made? fresh unboxed. it, once again, makes sense for their lore - they are looking for more about themself from riz - and their function - they're an antagonist in a game experience, they're meant to be interacted with in a way that produces results and meshes with the existing magic circle - but that shininess takes away from the implied history they should have dominion over and the person they're haunting doesn't.
from another angle there is kinda something there about how put-together canon baron is as a concept; the domain they call home is riz's deep-seeded fears, extremely vulnerable things he's drawn borders around to quarantine and refused to walk into. things that from his perspective would irreversibly shatter certain pleasant fictions his world is built on top of. canon baron, While Extremely Cool, I feel is kinda too neat to connect with and signify the apocalyticized mess that'd result from this paradigm shift. the part where they're in riz's briefcase and looking through every mirror is Very Cool And Fucked Up! but ultimately the show draws a line around them as well, by making game-physical, tangible spaces they're in (the mirrors and the haunted mordred manor) and put riz and the bad kids there only when they need to confront stuff. riz is meaningfully narratively away from baron's unknown land for most of fantasy high.
with that and all of my disclaimers in mind my conclusion here is if canon baron wants to be a Horror Monster they'd have to cross way more lines. be a Lot more invasive. hence (holds up my class swap baron like a long cat)
#ask#not art#tldr a lot of fantasy high's and d20's nature plays against having a Horror horror piece in it. there's no space for emptiness or dread#that's one of the most attractive things to me about horror. the monster signifying a new world you don't understand#you see something on the deserted streets and you realize: oh. the world doesn't work how I've been thinking it does#if u've noticed how much this has in common with queer experiences haha. yeag#man. actually I should also put the I Am Not White disclaimer in there too lmao a lot of the notion of The Monstrous is! traditionally#about maintaining and upkeeping a ''social order'' (read: the powers that be)#and a Lot of Wilderness Fiction is deeply and maliciously colonialist#so when I say ''the unknown land'' and ''the monster'' I am pretty much speaking From one of those unknown lands#and from the position of one of those monsters#the fear of the monstrous is so very often the fear of being consumed by - or becoming - the monstrous yourself#and well. when you're already there in the eye of the zeitgeist. You Can Do What You Want Forever#all that to say it Is important to me that baron is made of riz's lies. even more so in this funny class swap thing I make for fun#like as a horror protag he makes me insane. he loves lines! he loves lines he drew himself. he replicates these borders in himself#that mirror the world he lives in that's so hostile to him. that kid Loves rules. he bows to even the ones that hurt him#like. u get where I'm getting to right I did make a whole comic kinda near this subject he's Already The Other#baron is a monster's monster. baron is a mirror image. GODs I cant help but wish they were messier#it's kinda why I make class swap baron to be like. an ever nearing realization. like I warble abt all this but I genuinely do also find#canon baron to be just as visually coherent and thematically perfect as riz if not more. it's hard to beat how cool the mirror stuff is#it's hard to beat that doll face in iconic visuals! I have to strike according to my strength rather than trying to beat canon#so instead of reflection it's captured moments. instead of a blank face it's the lack of one. mmm. maybe I'm just kinda breaking things#for fun also but that's My prerogative in my house awooga <3#well. thats kinda my thoughts on the general subject. thank u for listening. I will bake something soon dyou want some

how would quadrants work on beforus as opposed to alternia?
i dont have a singular solid answer to this because i think ultimately Beforus was left a blank slate that the reader can and will project different ideologies onto - many see it as equally malevolent to Alternia, i see it as innately benevolent - but i guess i have 2 ideas to add to the conversation.
1) that despite their differing purposes, Beforus just like Alternia operates as a well-oiled machine where every individual has their own position and purpose. so despite its distinctly less authoritarian bent, it makes sense that Beforus' quadrants would have a similarly utilitarian nature to Alternia's
and 2) Scratch didn't make anything on Alternia from whole cloth; everything on Beforus was in some way bent into a shape that better suit him. so no matter how different the quadrants might be on each planet, there should remain a kernel that is easily recognisable to us. (in much the same way matespritship is the "closest parallel" to what we call human love, or how what jack noir and the queen have going on is "a dead ringer" for kismesissitude. the general rule seems to be that the existence of these relationships are universal truths, even if the way they are used on Alternia may be peculiar to that situation).
so in that sense it's easy to see how moirallegience probably remained pretty similar across the scratch. the romantic ideal of moirallegience people tend to think of today, where trolls from different positions in the hemospectrum are able to directly benefit each other (i.e. a calming influence from a lower blood in exchange for physical protection from a higher), is even pretty similar to the existing social structure on Beforus as we understand it - though you could also argue that makes it somewhat redundant. (I guess this also depends on how much one chooses to buy into the idea of highbloods as naturally tending toward violence.)
kismesissitude is obviously a bit harder to imagine. while it's never been totally clear in what way Alternians benefit from the institution of kismesissitude, other than that it is somehow necessary for their form of reproduction (and it's not even totally clear this form of reproduction is the same on Beforus), we do have a pretty full picture of the caliginous quadrant's more cosmic purpose. it transforms the deeply mythical battle between protagonist and antagonist, hero and villain, green cherub and red cherub, into an intimately interpersonal relationship; it is storytelling-as-romance. it shares this systematic nature with moirallegience, so i certainly think it's something Beforans would be interested in as a practice. but how that practice realises itself, again, largely depends on what you see Beforus as like more broadly. do Beforans use kismesissitude in its most literal form, as a way of stamping down evil? (I have argued in the past that Beforus was probably a lot like the world of classic comic books, so this one is a fun possibility to me.) or maybe, in the absence of the kind of overt evils that define Alternia, Beforans use it to elevate lesser conflicts into a kind of performance?
a third factor to take into account could also be that what we know of Beforus largely comes as call-and-response to reader reactions to Alternia and its cast of characters. so in the same vein as my cutesy moirallegience suggestion above, maybe the Beforan version of the black quadrants is literally just the cutesy fanfic kismesissitude where an auspistice gets called in whenever it starts to look like it's going too far. (auspisticism is an interesting one to take into account because its entire existence on Alternia is predicated on the fact that kismeses love to cheat on each other. is pitch infidelity even an issue on Beforus on a remotely similar scale? again, this is a huge "depends" which might drastically alter how you approach this whole topic).
but that's my two cents :)

Hawks didn’t have to kill Twice
Meta: Necessary 1 and Hawks inner conflict 2 (Warning: spoiler Heavy and very Long post, images and writing)
(Sorry for being so late to this topic, this Meta took a long time to make and update with current plot points. Also permission is given to Re-post (not rewrite) this Meta anywhere/any site)
Necessary: Sedation and backup options (1)
It wasn’t “necessary” for Hawks to kill Twice and by extension not justified either. Hawks could have used a sedative on Twice to capture him or at the very least rendered him unable to be a threat for an extended period of time.
Within the story and overall context of Bnha, Hawks should have been able to do this quite easily, especially compared to what he was already doing in story.
Momo can create some form of drug so powerful that it could knock down Gigantomachia given enough time, obviously something so powerful wouldn’t be needed to knock out Twice but the point is that Momo’s powers are based off of things that already exist in their world, things that she has to know the components of to create. So things like an agent that can render someone ineffective/unconscious do exist in Bnha.
A drug of this size ^ was eventually able to knock down Gigantomachia, so surely something much smaller should be able to do the same, and in much quicker time, to a normal human like Twice.
Hawks was being observed at the time he was acting as a double agent in the MLA, so it may have been difficult for him to obtain such a sedative without notice, but that line of thinking doesn’t really add up with what we see in the story.
Hawks uses the Destro books to warn the Heroes about the impending threat of the LOV/MLA and he does this by marking/highlighting certain words and sections of said books.
He literally tells Endeavor to read those specific parts and despite being observed in some form, no one thought any of that was suspicious enough to do anything about.
So either Hawks wasn’t being observed that thoroughly or those watching him were very incompetent, I’m thinking it’s the former.
Hawks is a Hero, primarily a fighter but also a pretty fair rescue hero as well, if the Destro book warnings flew under the radar then I don’t think anyone would have found it very suspicious for Hawks to obtain a sedation drug/tool and keep it on his person, if ever needed the excuse could simply be that such a thing may need to be used to render a frantic or injured civilian immobile in order to rescue them.
Is that legal for heroes? Not sure but I don’t think it would have been discovered or mattered that much in Hawks’s already very shady situation.
But if it did need to be hidden and couldn’t be discovered, like for instance if Hawks’s person was searched and he didn’t want such a thing to be discovered in the first place, then what?
This wasn’t a problem either as Hawks was able to apparently sneak in a very noticeable and fairly sized recording device.
(This was cut from the anime as far as I know (for some reason??) and only shown in the manga.)
The device itself wasn’t even a bug, shown in size by being scaled to Hawks’s hand; a sedative injection could fit in such a device of that size. The concept isn’t so far away from the Quirk erasing bullets.
(Scaled to size the injectable device/contents is about the same size as the recording device Hawks brought (easily snuck in) with him.)
“A villain who refuses to be knocked out” is a part of Hawks’s reasoning in his decision to kill Twice, but Twice is still just an ordinary human being aside from his Quirk, the ‘sedative option’ logically was more than possible and definitely would have had the desired effect of either completely stopping the threat of Twice’s Quirk or at least severely undermining it.
Why wasn’t better backup prepared on the heroes’ side?
The hero commission and the overall hero side never had much of a problem using the students in the war, there wasn’t even much protest against this course of action, Midnight herself even justifying it by saying that Kaminari knew what he was getting into (which given the situation I very much doubt) and that no one else can do this because his specific Quirk is needed.
This instance/battle is important for more than Kaminari’s big hero moment and confirmation of his feelings for Jiro, the heroes had intel of Kaminari’s specific chosen opponent, “The Amplivolt villain” a high ranking member of the PLF, who’s power is very similar to the young hero’s quirk in the absorption and manipulation/discharge of electricity.
Kaminari fulfils his role in this specific battle, a success because the heroes had obtained Intel on this specific opponent, the only logical line of reason being that this Intel must have come from Hawks, being the heroes source.
So why wasn’t this same logic applied to Twice? Or even to other villains?
Hawks confronts twice and shuts down a sad man’s parade in an instant, as well as pinning him down:
Now leaving aside the Hawks/sedation point, what happened next with Dabi’s entrance into the fight and using his powerful fire Quirk to push Hawks into a corner is often used as justification for Hawks’s killing blow, placed at a severe disadvantage and doing anything to prevent Twice’s escape.
It’s a fair point at first but looking a little deeper I don’t think it stands up as a whole when going back to the Kaminari battle and later Chapters in the Manga.
Inasa Yoarashi, Quirk Whirlwind, introduced during the hero licensing exam:
The scene depicted above shows Inasa using his wind Quirk to lift and manipulate a large number of people and debris (rubble), here using it for saving/rescue but could also reasonably be used in combat against a large number of opponents.
And later in the Manga this is exactly what happens:
Inasa uses his Quirk to great effect against the clone parade.
While true that this wasn’t enough to fully stop the parade in its entirety, in the Hawks/Twice situation it would have been more than efficient in containing twice, and even more than that would have subverted Dabi’s threat as well.
Though Dabi’s flames are more powerful than Shoto’s, there’s no reason to assume that Inasa’s quirk couldn’t have thrown off the flames similar to what happened during the Exam. And if that’s not enough of an edge in this fight, there’s one other person who’d be ideal:
Mina Ashido, Quirk Acid, apparently very fire proof. (This was really cool; I wish more had been done with this aspect of Mina’s abilities.)
Mina’s fire resistance paired with her physical skills/mobility would be a great asset in a fight against Dabi, could it defeat him? Probably not, but when taken all together: Hawks easily defeating twice before the parade can form, Inasa being backup in case this failed to contain the clones, and if Dabi showed up the pairing of Inasa and Mina together having pretty good odds against Dabi with their Quirks naturally countering his, it’s a pretty good plan.
But was it possible given the timing and circumstances? I think it was.
The licensing exam was common hero knowledge, or at least government knowledge, the picture above showing Mera, a worker for the Hero Public Safety Commission, overseeing the event and directing it. And then was present later at the Remedial Course in the same position.
A hero (definitely a high ranking one) could have obtained information on the students and how they performed during, with Hawks and how well connected he is through hero society (doubly so through the hero commission), this should be easy, either by being present or viewing recorded info.
Mina’s resistance to fire wasn’t shown or mentioned until it was used to get through Dabi’s flames, but given her facial expression (lack of fear/surprise), it seems fine to assume that she didn’t just run into the fire and hope for the best that her Acid Man could take it. That’s a reasonable line of thought right? Though not revealed in present or flashback, there must have been some point before this where the ability was tested, because the scene wouldn’t really make sense otherwise.
The two being at the battle would be the next issue but given how quickly Tokoyami reached Hawks’s vicinity riding inside Fatgum, part of the first few waves of heroes advancing to the Paranormal liberation headquarters, traveling by running (Fatgum was doing the running, not slow but definitely not a hero known for his speed) on the ground, then entering the building by flight to get to Hawks to help him.
It’s also reasonable to assume that using Inasa’s ability to fly and carry others (Mina in this case) with him, the two could have reached the building, entered inside and gotten to Twice’s location at the time or even before Dabi had reached them. I feel there’s evidence for this because Inasa was able to beat Shoto Todoroki in terms of Speed in their first meeting, Shoto who can keep up with Deku and Bakugo.
Official Bnha Wiki Entry: The practical exam consisted of a marathon race which Inasa narrowly defeated Shoto in.
The heroes were already willing to put the students on the front lines to increase their odds (Kaminari), and the knowing of the student’s abilities was there to be known if looked for (Solidly proven in Inasa/license exam, less so in Mina ashido but still feasible).
Was there enough time to consider and prepare all of this? Definitely.
Hawks had more than a month, I think the timeline provides even more time than that, to obtain and plan anything that was needed for the coming conflict.
So all that being taken into consideration, why wasn’t any of this done? The Sedative option or the increased backup (Quirk counters) on the heroes side? Hawks isn’t stupid by any means so why wasn’t this thought out? I think the answer was given in one of the first descriptions of Hawks and his character:
“Hawks the hero that moves too fast.”
Hawks moved too quickly, not considering the full scope of his options in dealing with twice. The tools and strategic moves were there, he just didn’t make use of them. So looking at all the details, every character and scenario as a whole, Hawks didn’t “do what he had to do” and the death of Twice wasn’t necessary.
Hawks’s Conflict: past and present (2)
I was never a big fan of Hawks but I do see that his character is very complexed and layered, less so and being more straightforward in recent chapters but maybe that’ll change soon.
Hawks was conflicted during his confrontation with Twice but just as deeply as the fight or the nuance of the situation was Hawks’s inner conflict.
The confliction of the current self and the past self, the government spy and the child hero.
Some say that Hawks never intended to take Twice alive and that his intent was never to save him, which is true.
If Hawks really wanted Twice to back down from the fight (a fight Hawks claims he doesn’t want) then why would Hawks mock Twice like this?
It’s like he was trying to goad Twice into a fight in this scene because what other reason could Hawks have for saying it?
In the scene above Twice consistantly uses the word “us”, refering to those like himself who’ve been left “to the wolves” by hero society and heroes, by extension also talking about his closer friends in the League of Villains.
His friends who Hawks made no mention of trying to help at all, despite knowing how much Twice valued frienship and loyalty. There was no way Hawks could have seriously believed Twice would turn his back on the LOV, even if it was to save his own life. Twice confirms this in his own words later and Hawks isn’t surprised at all.
(Also side point: Twice was definitely not going to be given a fair shot at rehabilitation anyway, Hawks had no position or power to guarantee those words at all. Hero society has never been known for its nuance or understanding, a good example being evident in how Gentle criminal was treated after his arrest.
Gentle criminal was barely what could be considered a villain, even the police admitting as much in the interrogation after Gentle’s capture at UA. And from the way the conversation ended in the chapter it seemed like Gentle was going to be given a second chance or at least some form of lenience, for the tame nature of his crimes and for turning himself in.
But that clearly didn’t happen.
Gentle Criminal was put in prison, incarcerated alongside others who are clearly much more violent offenders than he ever was. Them not knowing who Gentle is at first look does call into question how much contact he had with the other inmates but that really doesn’t make it any better even if he didn’t.
Gentle criminal’s reasons for stopping the other inmates is a nice sentiment, but considering that he wasn’t much of a villain to start with and how he was treated before/after his arrest, the message falls a little flat. That the downtrodden must fight and suffer for the sake of a system that doesn’t care about them and only rewards them after they’ve “done the right thing” which really translates to fight for the system.
Looking back at Twice and the crimes that he had already committed, coupled with his mental state, and the fact that Hero Society is not in any way nuanced, it’s hard to see Hawks’s words of rehabilitation and a second chance if he comes quietly as anything other than a lie at worst or a delusion at best (I think it’s the latter.))
Back to Hawks
Some others say that Hawks did intend to try to save Twice, in his own way or at least make the attempt, which looking at those points made does seem true at the same time.
Hawks did say that he didn’t want to fight Twice and his expression does look conflicted leading to the impression that what he’s saying is his truth.
And Hawks did save Twice from Dabi’s flames, protecting him, the action itself is undeniable.
Put together this is why there appears to be so much conflict around these scenes, because both points of view are by evidence true.
And the reason why that is I think, is because Hawks himself is conflicted at his core, his origin and present.
Allmight describes great heroism present in heroes like this: “There are stories about every hero, how they became great. Most have one thing in common, their bodies moved before they had a chance to think, almost on their own. And today, that’s what happened to you.”
Sir Nighteye gives a very different description, calling such heroism madness of its own, especially in Allmight and Deku.
Hawks embodies these statements or rather he did.
Hawks did have that same Heroic ‘instict’ to save others, to be a Hero in its purest form, wanting to be a bright light shining for others.
But that was who Hawks was, not who he presently is.
Only a vestige remains of Hawks’s true desire to save others, as evident by how he did save Twice in that instant of Dabi’s attack and that’s the conflict.
People are shaped by their experiences and what they are taught to believe, dictating most of their actions. Hawks was raised/trained/manipulated from a very young age to be an asset for Hero society, so much so that the possible deaths of innocent people are something he’s meant to shrug off for the sake of the “greater Good”.
Hawks goes along with this, part of which included the High-end vs Endeavor fight, an instance that if Endeavor hadn’t gone “Plus Ultra!” or if the Nomu had taken the time to finish him off, could have resulted in an unknown number of hero and civilian deaths.
That uncaring willingness to sacrifice the lives of others, even those you claim to care about, to achieve a greater goal.
The manipulation of a young child to believe and act a certain way into adulthood, while de-valuing everything else and using them as a weapon against your enemies.
This sounds familiar right? The Master(s) and the student.
And in the end, due to Hawks’s own lack of planning, his conflicted inner selves, the manipulation/conditioning that he’s been through all this time, and the present situation that it all resulted in…
So while I would say that what happened was partially Hawks fault, I wouldn’t say that it was his entire fault, because when someone is made to believe in a certain way of doing things, even more so when it’s since childhood, it can be extremely difficult for them to see and consider options outside of that Box.
End + Afterword
But then scenes like this happened:
This ^ is not a good thing, no matter the framing (though the anime does make it more clear as a negative), because this line embodies a central (likely fatal) flaw in the hero side.
“Optimistic to a fault” isn’t going to help things, the aspects of society that creates villains and wrecks heroes.
Lady Nagant was a hero (Assassin) that worked for the hero commission, operating during Allmight’s “Era of Peace” killing more than a few innocent people.
And they were (presently) innocent people, corrupt heroes whose crimes were never clearly stated and villains planning on committing “acts of terror” also never really described.
And no matter what their acts/crimes would have been, discreetly assassinating them to maintain a false facade of Peace and flawless justice, hero society was right to be called a phony illusion by L. Nagant.
Though the hero commission was wounded by a clone of Re-destro, it isn’t gone, Mera the blonde Commission worker from above is currently acting head.
Coupled with this scene:
This ^ probably isn’t a good thing either, again despite the framing, because nothing has been done to prevent the faults of the past from reappearing in the future.
How does this relate back to Hawks?
Hawks, like most of the other heroes in the series, can’t accept the fact that there are big problems in their society and way of doing things.
And the only change they do seem willing to accept is the kind that benefits them:
This ^ scene here is…mostly a good thing, though with some very important parts missing.
Ochako’s speech was very sweet but while it did inspire the civilians to help (which was really just letting the heroes stay in their own shelter and not abandoning a kid that has fought to protect them all this time), the speech was still centered around the heroes and what they need, not any other victims of hero society (although Ochako did consider that inwardly and later, that was good).
Getting to the final point of this meta: Just like Lady Nagant who came before Hawks and probably like another downtrodden, easily manipulated child that will come after him (If Deku really does succeed and bring it all back), Hawks is a part of the hero system that does the right and wrong things for the sake of saving others but because of their inability to accept the darker truths of that system and it’s failings, they’re not really saving anyone at all.
(Will make another Meta expanding on this, the Villains/hero society/civilians and the Quirk singularity Theory at a later date)
To be continued…

Fic idea collection: sephiroth reincarnates into mdzs.
Now I've been rotating this in my mind for a while, but it went through several iterations before I was happy with it. Feel free to expand on or even use any of them!
Sephiroth reincarnates into lwj. Straightforward, pretty 1 to 1, we get lovely white v black and anime swordsmen and a bewildered love at first sight gay panic that goes differently to but about as well as canon. Room for gorgeous scenes and lots of angst. Wings, war heroes, on a pedestal, etc. Becoming a new person vs cycles of trauma. Devil you know etc. Problem: I don't like writing romance, I don't particularly want to one true soulmate wwx with someone who isn't lwj, and should wwx still die (pretty inevitable) the issue abruptly becomes sephiroth grieving for his brutally defamed and murdered One Love and not going on a genocidal spree about it. Lsh is not enough of an deterrent when the jianghu wants the kid dead too.
Sephiroth reincarnates into lwj and lxc in a split soul/mind situation, and they 'both' fall in love with wwx. I loved this, but the logistical issues (particularly the war) clashed with anything to do with the canon plot, and again it didn't fix the other romantic issues.
Sephiroth reincarnates into just lxc and that would have very little bearing on the wwx centric plot, so maybe a romance with jc? Again, cute, but sephiroth is pretty much the polar opposite of lxc and that'd mess up so much. They could work a grumpy (cold, uncaring) with a grumpy (hot, cares so very much) dynamic, I think they'd work pretty well under the right circumstances, but that combined with the fact I don't really ship them (sorry!) put me off expanding it further.
The one I finally decided on:
Sephiroth as... nmj! The combination of the special sabers and their resentment, the war leader role, the reputation, the kid brother abruptly foisted on him, it really struck me! I really like the idea of nmj slipping NHS some of his dna as a baby (qi covering for hojo science in this case) and the compulsive consequences of that. Feeling like NHS only really cares for him because of the s cells mind control. Having to take care of him like those egg/flour bag baby projects to teach kids empathy and responsibility but with a real human kid brother.
Nmj letting NHS slack even if he hates it because his subconscious will protect him in an emergency. If you've seen the scene in ff7 rebirth of cloud with the soldiers you'll know what I mean (it was SUCH a good scene. Ice cold). Imagine NHS of all people getting in trouble (like in the live action) and suddenly like a switch is flipped turning into a merciless murder machine.
I feel like they'd bond a lot in their own way, with NHS both thinking the world of and being sibling scared of him, them thoroughly enjoying battles of wits like weiqi but having no/few shared interests outside of that. Nmj honing NHS' observation skills, ruthlessness, quick thinking (and unwittingly, acting skills lmao). Sephiroths total inability to comprehend NHS' want to be lazy and indulgent with his own childhood of being genetically made to be a high functioning child soldier and then having to lead the sect and raise a kid from a young age, but having no real reference for how a normal childhood would look.
It'd be really interesting to see how it'd affect the war efforts, with someone well versed in large scale conflict, with sephiroths own overwhelming power. Wwx wouldn't be the sole ace, and how would that affect his own motivations and reputation if he wasn't as necessary?
And of course!! The venerated triad!! How would sephiroth take lxc and jgy, so much like his old genesis and angel? Would the experience of crisis core prepare him for those two, or for betrayal and distrust? Without the threat of degradation, would he find himself clinging to them? Would he notice lgys betrayal or underestimate him? Would he feed him his dna and pull an uno reverse??
And should he die, there's no way his corpse is going to be normal. Like, at all. (And poor NHS would sense it, react to it, part of his mind and cells getting ripped out, shut down, the warmth and love of his brother.) Would it constantly try to revive? Would its presence cause mania or mood swings, hallucinations, nightmares? Would people exposed start picking up habits or beliefs he had while alive? Would it be cut up to try and weaken it? Would its eyes track lgy until he hides it away? Would he start oozing green?? And don't even start on what a temple scene would look like in this situation, oh man. It'd be Bad. I think he'd claw his way back to full consciousness out of pure homicidal refusal. He's clawed his way back from total annihilation far too many times to let some conniving POLITICIAN do him in for good.
Nmj staunchly returning from the dead to take up being a Co sect leader again because now he's actually unkillable and NHS is not about to let this happen without shoving as much work as possible back onto him lmao (so he can't leave). And befriending wen ning. The white hair and blank eyes with the iron grey skin and black/gold would be striking.
Basically nmj would be ripe for really good canon divergence and character analysis and growth but even if you keep canon the exact same there's still plenty of room during and after for anything ranging from hurt/comfort to fluff to pure crack (we're putting Sci fi dystopia allegory man in Chinese High Fantasy it's not going to go completely smoothly. And this man does not have experience with raising a child).
There is, also, the option of split mind nhs/nmj sephiroth, in which one body takes the brawn and the violence and the attention and the other keeps the brain and the secret longing for safety and comfort and leisure, acting as though two separate people to allow this space to rest and heal and learn to be human in the way a child soldier or orphaned teen sect leader isn't allowed. It'd mean NHS and nmj would have to be twins, and thus full blooded, but that could be rectified by nmj just being the youngest of the trio and NHS being a few years behind in classes so he's in the same year as the other clan heirs (and wwx) like canon. He'd also be a lot, lot harder to kill and if jgy did anyway sephiroth would quite brutally extract revenge immediately for killing his other body and that means no happy ending for wwx (or a lot of people tbh).
So which idea is your favourite?
#'isn't this like your fourth character reincarnation crossover -' shhhhhhhh#(it's not it's a much higher number)#I've been writing these since I was like 14 they are my true bread and butter#That and the two bodies one mind thing but that turned out to be me subconsciously trying to explore my gender years before I realised#And then I got attached to the trope what can I say I do adore ruse dropped synchronicity bamf#Anyway I like all of these! The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
It feels like every single fantasy film has been building up to The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. This sprawling world of myth and magic is a landmark achievement. The special effects, characters, art direction, score, scale and faithfulness to the source material make it the kind of picture that will shape generations. It’s big, wonderful and epic but also small, intimate and emotional. This is a labor of love and it shows.
In the Second Age of Middle-earth, the Dark Lord Sauron forged the One Ring. With its power, he was poised to conquer all. Defeated through sheer luck, his evil dissipated. 3,000 years later, the One Ring is discovered in the possession of a humble hobbit named Frodo Baggins (Elijah Wood). To save the world, from Sauron's return, the ring must be snuck back into the shadowy land of Mordor and thrown into the volcano where it was forged. On this quest, Frodo is accompanied by his friends Samwise Gamgee (Sean Astin), Pippin Took (Billy Boyd) and Merry Brandybuck (Dominic Monaghan), his mentor, the wizard Gandalf (Ian McKellen), and representatives of the free races of Middle-Earth: humans Strider (Viggo Mortensen) and Boromir (Sea Bean), dwarf Gimli (John Rhys-Davies) and elf Legolas Greenleaf (Orlando Bloom).
To get us up to speed, the picture begins with a history lesson that’ll knock you off your feet. The armies clashing seem immeasurably large. Sauron effortlessly radiates evil despite having no dialogue. You can feel the thousands of years of culture in the fighting styles, weapons and scenery. Middle-Earth feels real. The scale is immense, which makes director Peter Jackson’s decision to focus the plot on an ordinary hobbit a genius move. In a story with caverns so large our civilization could never dream of carving them, elven cities that seem to grow from the trees that surround them, seamless towers of black stone and all sorts of monsters, it would be easy for audiences to feel alienated. We’d all like to think that when push comes to shove we’d be great heroes but in reality, there’s no way. The best a tiny person like you or me could hope to do is stay brave, which is exactly Frodo’s role.
Several times throughout, we hear that “Even the smallest person can change the course of the future.” There couldn’t be anyone smaller than Frodo Baggins - except, perhaps, his friend to the end, Samwise. The hobbits are humble little people who have lived peaceful, simple lives free from adventure and are now thrust into a journey that will be the stuff of legends. Their joys are simple: warm meals, fields of brightly-colored vegetables and parties with friends & family. One particular scene that shows you just how small they are comes towards the end of the story. Sam and Frodo are traveling down a river. In the distance, they spot these enormous statues, the kind that would make the Statue of Liberty blush. Like us, they gaze at them in wonder, wondering who could’ve built them and who they represent. None of the other members of the Fellowship seem to give them more than a passing glance - and yet, these simple people prove themselves just as brave and reliable as the seasoned guardians they are traveling with. It’s awe-inspiring in so many ways.
By focusing on Frodo and his part of the journey, the film has a strong emotional core. The Fellowship of the Ring knows it has this time-tested story that’ll enchant audiences but before doing anything else, it made sure to get the basics right. Even if it hadn’t, it would’ve been an impressive production. Surrounding the inspirational battle of good vs. evil are incredible visuals, standout special effects and exciting action scenes. The film contains elements of horror in the form of its shadowy Ring Wraiths and scenes set in the deep mines of Moria. It’s got comedy to lighten the mood when necessary, chases so perfectly paced they should be shown in film school and battles that remain exciting whether they feature millions or a handful of fighters. There are so many great lines and iconic scenes you’ll love to quote it to your friends. The score by Howard Shore is this powerhouse that immediately sets up residence in your mind.
Though it ends in a "to be continued", The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is the kind of movie you need to watch just to be part of the cultural conversation. Don't worry if you're weary of following trends; you would fall in love with this film even if you discovered it on your own. (Theatrical version on Blu-ray, April 26, 2022)

TRANSFORMERS ONE BRAINROT TIMEEEEE
Yes it is a nice simple clean story warning about revenge.
Yes Optimus prime is once again gods favourite semi truck.
But also my over educated too lazy to use my education on something of substance sees a movie showing the difference between community care and organizing vs forming a cult of personality based on enacting revenge.
Megatron’s plan to kill Sentinel is a warning about revenge but it’s also a warning of how systemic change cannot be done by the individual, it is community organizing to build each other up. For a movement to have strong roots in care and love to ensure during time of political unrest and transition, the marginalized are uplifted as well.
Megatron’s individualistic showing of might making right and revenge continues a cycle of abuse, Optimus’s work in uplifting his friends and community is an act of transformative justice (HAHAHAHAHAH) as he has radical empathy and works from those who are the most disenchanted and empowers them to come together to fight for their rights.
And this isn’t some oh violence never solves anything, “a riot is the language of the unheard” says Martin Luther King, also did I pause in writing this to briefly read a view peer reviewed articles about the role riots have played in civil rights and activism? Yes. Is this a good use of my access to these resources? Probably not. However as a little silly girl that knows I don’t know anything Mr. Socrates, this is how I try and understand the world, by reading way too far into transforming robots that I think are cool. Anyways, violence cannot be ignored as being a part of civil rights. Stonewall was a protest and people rioted. Bricks were thrown. The violence the oppressed do comes from a multitude of places. There are the opportunist and what not but there are also the frustrated, the emboldened the angry.
And oh gosh here comes my veer right straight off the path of academia, Optimus Prime shows that he will fight, using violence when necessary to protect and fight for his community to enact systemic change. To truly replace the old regime with inequality baked into it with a new one. And in his radical empathy he shows Megatron grace. He lets him go.
Megatron is not bad because he used violence, it’s bad because it’s retributive Justice, it’s a movement founded on anger. For his need for revenge. Because he on the individual scale was taken advantage of and the abused became the abuser. Hurt people hurt people.
Optimus did have anger. He did use violence, but he thought beyond just the individual, he cared about those who are still oppressed.
Do I still not love that he’s god’s favourite semi truck and he’s picked worthy by primus to wield great power? Yeah I don’t love it but it’s also fucking transformers, good vs bad binaries are sorta baked into it.
But I really appreciated Transformers One for doing the Megatron’s decent to anger and revenge without it feeling like it was being like oooooh violence is never the answer, let hero cop Orion Pax make change from the inside cause that always works right? (Looking at you idw, ily idw I still love you)
Instead of making it a story of systemic change being done outside vs inside the system, Transformers One shows how for change to be maintained and truly for the better, it must be transformative, power cannot be taken the same way Sentinel took it, Megatron is just playing Sentinel’s game of funnel power to the top. And while it was sorta because he was given the matrix by primus, Optimus does empower the people by dismantling the system of having non transformers be the lowest in the class system by giving them back the transformation cogs that were stolen from them.
Like in general I’m not a huge fan of IDW’s yeah cybertron’s government was broken and the decepticon’s were resisting it but they’re resisting it wrong, they should really be trying to make change from the inside. I think transformers prime had a similar thing of Megatron was a revolutionary but power corrupts or whatever and now the oppressed are the oppressors. Like I’m fine with story’s showing the hurt hurting others but when Optimus Prime is just like the idealized version of a broken system and that’s the solution I don’t exactly love it.
Like before Earthspark switchrd gears entirely, it was doing something interesting. Showing a Megatron that realizes his ideology has been corrupted and helping atone for the harm he has done.
Anyways maybe the doomed yaoi of Optimus and Megatron isn’t forever in transformers one. Maybe their conclusion can come in a similar vein as to Earthspark. A rekindling of love as old gays.

Gloom Wreathed - TOTK
BOTW Verse
With the Calamity having been eradicated, and the scourge of Hyrule Castle successfully banished by the Hero and the Princess, peace prevailed in the kingdom for some time. Quelled the beast was, though it was not ousted from Dawn's body. The malice, the Calamity, the whispers of Demise himself still entwined itself in Dawn's very being. A great evil and great hatred remained within her psyche, using her as its home.
The great upheaval ushered in by Ganondorf's untimely return shattered the sanctity of Hyrule once again - a being that had once been sealed at the cost of the first King, Rauru's, life.
Dawn, in her time of laying low in Hyrule, had been trying to find ways to separate the festering malice from herself. Though it made the monsters of Hyrule docile towards her, the denizens of the land would only whisper when she drew near. Avoiding her gaze, avoiding too much conversation than what was necessary.
The wilderness was her home, the wheeling stars overhead keeping her company. Whenever she felt too lonely, she'd scale Mount Lanaryu, kept safeguarded from the frigid weather thanks to the power Naydra had gifted her years prior.
She was making her way down the mountain, crossing the Naydra Snowfield, when the Upheaval took place. A great thunderous roar, that made all of Hyrule feel as if it would shake apart. Though Dawn couldn't see the castle from where she was, something deep within her heart understood what was happening. The shattered pieces of the Calamity that had lived within her for a century stirred, the scar on her chest burning. The agony was so mind-numbing, that she had to stop walking immediately. The voice of the Calamity had never been so loud.
Before the pain could knock her unconscious, the ground beneath her would tear open. A new substance, gloom, lined the walls, glowing in time with her rapid heartbeat. With nothing beneath her so suddenly, Dawn would fall. The gloom almost seemed to reach out to her, but was unable to reach her as she tumbled into Hyrule's Depths.
It was a landing that, by all rights, should have killed her. If she wasn't tainted by the Calamity, touched by Malice, and imbued with the unshakable will of Demise, Dawn would have very well died. Immortality was one, of many things, she'd learned she had in the past few years.
Her fall was not without injury, however. In a pile of gloom was where she'd land, the substance immediately rushing to meet her. It was much like the malice a century prior in Castle Town - it moved to her side without hesitation. This time, however, the gloom moved into the shape of hands, with a glowing, single eye in each palm.
It lift her gently, like a broken doll, and whisked her away. Similar to the malice, the gloom would heal and mend her. The gloom, too, would find a place within her as the malice had before, coexisting as they both were spawns of Ganon. Dawn's necklace, imbued with Sheikah technology, would keep the worst of the effects at bay. The loss of strength and sick feeling that most reported did not affect her. If anything, the gloom made her feel stronger, much better than the malice ever had.
The Depths became a welcome respite for Dawn, believing them to be wholly empty and uninhabited besides the gloom-covered monsters that dwelt in various pockets. Later, she would come to learn that the infamous Yiga operated from the Depths. This revelation was one she made sure didn't sour this new place for her. Fanatical as they were over her, she managed to lay low and avoid making her presence known to them. Perhaps their leader wasn't dead like she had thought, as their hideouts and encampments were too fortified, and too vast for them to have ended up here at the same time she did.
With seemingly no way up and out of the Depths, the chasms that opened across Hyrule too far up and out of reach, Dawn initially resigned herself to this fate. While she wasn't monstrous nor evil despite her soul being touched by darkness, the people of Hyrule weren't warm to her. The Depths were a place she could live freely, without the stares of ire digging into her back, and without feeling like an outcast despite having done nothing wrong. The monsters left her alone, and the hands of gloom would come to greet her, gifting her various things they'd found scouring the Depths.
Dawn would soon come to utilize a new sword for herself, with the Eightfold Blade she previously used having been rotted by the gloom around her. This new sword was a weapon from the gloom itself. An ominous looking one-handed blade: the Gloom Sword. The toll of using such a sword on a normal wielder was similar to being around the gloom itself. A feeling of sickness, of the wielder's life slowly being worn away, however... Dawn did not have such ailments. It was a sword she could keep on her person, or summon from the gloom to avoid being seen with such a blade. She practiced on spindly, unnatural trees first, then sparred with the hands, before finally working her way up to sparring against a Lynel in order to hone her proficiency further. A rigorous, arduous routine of training that she committed herself to each and every day.
It wasn't until, one fateful day, she saw a familiar sight in the form of Naydra that her resolve broke - how much time had passed since she fell, she wondered? Hyrule's own dragons taking a plunge into the Depths surprised her. Seeing Naydra was more than a punch in the gut, Dawn soon realizing that the dragon had no idea what had actually happened to her. It was a much needed reunion, and Dawn wasted no time in climbing onto her back as the ice dragon soon lift to the air, taking Dawn around the Depths from a higher vantage point.
In a way, it was like catching up with an old friend. Dawn was able to recount her time to Naydra, the dragon listening to her patiently. In turn, Dawn got to learn what was happening on the surface. Great islands in the sky also came with the endless chasms, and the weaponry that the people of Hyrule utilized aged and decayed.
With Dawn's permission, Naydra took them up and out of the same chasm Dawn had fallen in initially. If Dawn ever wished to return back, all she needed was to ask and Naydra would take her both down and back up. Now back in Hyrule, Dawn deals with an internal battle of the self. She's lived with the malice, and now the gloom, for so long. Part of her wanted to still try to rid herself of it, while another part was fine with simply basking in it. Perhaps there was some way to use this power for good, to benefit someone or to be of help. Surely, an answer was out there for her somewhere. There was a vast amount of Hyrule she hadn't explored yet, as well as the islands that dotted the endless skies above.
For the first time in a while, she felt hope.
#👻 gloom wreathed | verse.#long post#i literally have not done anything with her botw verse but just know everything in that post applies here :3#but yeah she's still immortal in her fun fucked up way bc of the malice. the calamity. and NOW the gloom#ill make a smaller hc post for this verse too like the botw one for some misc hcs!!#the depths are such a massive part of this verse. and between the upheaval and her seeing naydra again will be its own arc in the verse#sry guys loz is my secondary eternal hyperfixation and god wont let me rest until i involve my muses in that universe :/

The Strange Approach
Request: So this one is where the reader is running throughout the city from the avengers, skidding through alleys and scaling over buildings of new york, climbing up fire escapes until their stuck on one of the tallest buildings in the city. Their cornered. They decide death would be better than having whatever punishment this supposedly ruthless team could come up with, so you fell backwards, plummeting towards the ground, however instead of hitting the ground, you fell through a portal and halted in mid air, held up by magic, surrounded by the avengers and strange himself. They try to intimidate you, but you refuse to say anything, and instead tell them to just kill you already, completely serious. Strange finds this, well strange, and tries a different approach
Pairing: Stephen Strange x Villain!Reader
Warning(s): suicidal tendencies [briefly mentioned...read at your own discretion], self-deprecating reader, villain-ish reader, Stephen being a lil cutie, language (you guys should be used it by now), kinda evil avengers?...I think I got everything; lemme know if didn’t :)
The sound of your shoes pushing against the pavement echoed off the empty walls of the desolate alleyway as you ran. You needed to get away; needed to escape.
The Avengers were on your tail, trying to capture you because you made a mistake. One stupid mistake that could cost you your freedom...and possibly your life.
You continued to run, constantly switching alleyways, scaling up and down buildings--anything to get away from the righteous group of so-called superheroes.
“You’ve got nowhere else to go, Snowflake.”
You rolled your eyes. Out of everything that the Tony Stark could’ve nicknamed you, he chose Snowflake. How original...not like you hadn’t heard that one before.
Out of the corner of your eye you spotted a fire escape, and quickly changed course towards it. As you got closer, you jumped; your hand barely grasping the last rung of the ladder.
Pulling yourself up was a challenge, but one that needed to be overcome--and fast. Quickly, your feet began to move with impeccable precision; each step up pushing you closer and closer towards your goal--freedom.
When you pulled yourself up off of the fire escape, you were greeted by the beautiful skyline of Manhattan. The golden tendrils fizzled down from the sun and encased the buildings with an ethereal glow--it truly was peaceful. Maybe I should climb skyscrapers more often.
The sound of repulsers charging up broke you out of your daze.
“Now, there is nowhere else to go. You’re coming with us, Elsa.”
You shook your head, “I’m not going anywhere with you!”
The patriotic man with a plan stepped forward; “Ma’am, all we’re asking is for you to come and partake in some question-”
You laughed, “I’m sure your ‘questioning’ isn’t as pleasant or simple as you make it out to be. I’m not going to conform to your demands, and all that’s going to get me is a prison cell or an early grave. So, excuse me if I wish to pass up the opportunity.”
The Widow sighed, “There is no way out of this. We’ll take you by force if necessary.”
Your eyes drifted towards the edge of the building; a single thought coming to mind. At least I’ll get to go on my own terms.
“You see, what you heroes don’t understand is that there is always another option.”
You walked over to the edge of the building, and stepped up onto the ledge.
“You do know that half of us can fly, right?” Stark, the so-called genius, taunted.
You titled your head, “How are you meant to fly with your mechanisms frozen?”
His eyes widened, and you barely heard the faint whispering of something along the lines of, “Friday, status report.”
“Ma’am, there is no need to take drastic measures.”
A tear slid down your cheek, “You guys are meant to be superheroes--you’re meant to protect us; meant to protect me. Instead you’re hunting me down like I’m some sort of animal. I’m not a threat; I haven’t hurt anyone.”
The one with the bow and arrow sighed. “Lady, we don’t make the rules. We just follow orders.”
Another speckle of sadness streamed down your face, “And look where that got you! Chasing some innocent civilian around the city like she’s some sort of monster! What makes you better than any of them?”
With a deep breath, you looked them in the eye.
“I’m not going to subject myself to whatever the government or anyone else deems necessary to neutralise a ‘threat’ like me. I deserve better. Society deserves better.”
With a final step backwards, you fell.
You had done it. You were falling; endlessly falling. Every decision you had ever made passed through your mind. If only you hadn’t tried to save those people, you wouldn’t be here in this mess if you didn’t.
The wind flew through your hair, reminding you that you only had a few more seconds left on his earth.
“Please, forgive me.”
You closed your eyes as you plummeted to the ground...only the impact never came.
Slowly opening your eyes, you found that you were once again face to face with the Avengers...and some man with a floating cape?
“That was a tad bit dramatic, don’t you think?”
Tears freely streamed down your cheeks as you held back a sob. You didn’t escape.
You barely managed to get out a “I- I didn’t do anything!”
Stark rolled his eyes, “Pipe down, I’m not in the mood for any more of your breakdowns.”
You were then placed in handcuffs, completely unaware that new addition’s eyes were stuck on you.
You were seated on the floor, your legs up to your chest as you rested your head on your arms. They had placed you in some sort of glass prison. You felt like you were some sort of freak on display.
“Miss L/n, I’ll ask you nicely one more time. How long have you known that you can control ice?”
You sat there silently; refusing to conform to any of their demands. You most likely were going to die anyways, may as well make it sooner rather than later.
The agent sighed, “You leave me no choice then. Bring in the Scarlet Witch.”
The doors opened and one of the newer members of Team ‘Good’ Guys stepped out.
The agent locked eyes with her, “You know what to do.”
She slightly nodded her head, and the agent made his way out of the room as she approached you.
She sighed, “This would’ve been so much easier if you just answered willingly.”
You shifted to face her, “Kill me, please.”
Her eyes widened, completely caught off guard by your request.
“I- I know that you have the capability to do it. I don’t want to live through whatever torture they’re going to put me through. Just- please.”
She was silent for a minute before she answered, “I’m not going to do that.”
Tears pooled in your eyes as a sob escaped through your lips, “Please. Just kill me. It’s going to happen eventually, why not do it sooner rather than later?”
Just as she was about to answer again, the man with the cloak entered the room. You put your head back in your hands, no longer wanting to deal with any of the Avengers & Co.
“I’ve got it from here, Wanda.”
She was about to argue with him but he held up a gloved hand. “I’ve got it Wanda.”
She left, albeit reluctantly; leaving you and cloak man alone in the room.
“Are you alright?”
You quickly glanced in his direction, but didn’t respond.
He moved closer, “I’m not going to hurt you.”
You curled into yourself more; both too scared and too sad to even respond.
He sighed and sat next to you, “I’m Doctor Stephen Strange, but you can call me Stephen.”
You shifted to face him.
“I’m a Master of the Mystic Arts here in New York.”
You kept eye contact with him; trying to figure out what his motive was.
“Like I said before, I’m not going to hurt you, I’m just here to talk. You seem like you need it.”
You moved closer, a feeling a sense of safety radiating from his being.
“I overheard you telling the Avengers that they should’ve been protecting you. Do you want to elaborate on that?”
You nodded your head. For some odd reason, you felt like you could trust this stranger.
“I was probably five years old? My parents couldn’t afford to take care of me anymore, so they gave their parental rights over to this supposedly nice man. He took me ‘home’ with him; except it was nothing like a home.”
You took a deep breath, “It was what I would now call some sort of Hydra base. There were hundreds of people living there, all armed with weapons from knives to some sort of high-tech guns.”
You shuddered. You hadn’t told anyone this story--and you hated re-living it.
He grabbed your hands, stroking his thumb across the back of it. “It’s fine. Take your time.”
You gave him a watery smile. “I don’t know how long I was there before they started the...experiments. All I remember is that it felt like torture and that they hurt, a lot. One day I woke up and the room was covered in ice; and I’ve been treated like a monster ever since.”
Unspilled tears blurred your vision, but you could tell that he was looking at you with a look of pity.
“You don’t wish to harm anyone. You just want the chance to live a normal life.”
You nodded your head. “I hate these stupid powers. All they’ve done is ruin my life and put a target on my back. The Avengers were right about me. I’m just a threat; a monster. The world would be better off without me.”
He grabbed your chin, forcing you to look him in the eye.
“Don’t say that again. You’re not a threat; and you’re definitely not a monster. You’re a person whose had terrible circumstances thrown upon them. We should’ve been there to protect you; it’s our job to destroy organisations like those-”
He took a deep breath, “-and on behalf of the entire Avengers Initiative and SHIELD, I deeply apologise for not dismantling them sooner.”
You wrapped your arms around him; startling the sorcerer. A few seconds later, you were engulfed in his warmth; feeling safer than you had ever been.
### IN ANOTHER ROOM ###
All the Avengers stood there in silence, wide-eyed with open jaws.
Bucky was the first to speak up. “She was a Hydra experiment gone wrong?”
Tony held his head down in shame, “I- I should’ve seen the signs of PTSD. What kind of superhero am I? I taunted the poor woman about her powers she got from years of torture!”
Wanda gasped as tears slid down her cheek, “They were going to make me show her, her worst nightmare! We’re monsters.”
Steve sorrowfully sighed, “Maybe the Strange Approach is a method we should implement going into the future.”

Harley’s Plea for Help: Chapter 2
Chapter 1
“How long do you think it’s gonna take before she decides to sneak out?” Nightwing asked over his comms, lazily leaning against the balcony railing in front of him with his head resting on one hand.
“Dude, I started sneaking out almost twenty minutes ago,” a girl’s voice made Nightwing squeak and turn around, to reveal a teenage girl leaning against the door that led to the balcony he was on. “I didn’t want to draw attention to myself by doing unnecessarily showy gymnastics down from my hotel room’s balcony, no matter how much fun that would be, so I just snuck out one of the hotel’s back exits. Then I looked up to admire the moon and saw you here, staking out what is clearly my suite, and decided to come pay you a visit.”
“How long have you been there? And how did you even get behind me? I hope you didn’t break and enter, that’s an actual lived-in apartment behind us right now,” Nightwing asked, turning around to analyze the daughter of Harley Quinn for the first time in person.
She looked just like in her pictures, of course. Jet black hair like her father’s, except it seemed to have a bluish shine in the light. And her eyes were definitely Harley’s— thank goodness for that —vibrant blue and clearly analyzing him with the same amount of intensity as his did her. He had to bite back a chuckle. In a turn of complete irony, she really did look like a Wayne kid. Fit all of Bruce’s usual criteria to be adopted. But she was tiny, even smaller than Harley’s lithe form. He, Bruce, and Tim were of the hypothesis that the exposure both her parents had to Ace Chemical’s vats of acid likely had an effect on her DNA that stunted her growth. Perhaps there were other effects that they wouldn’t be able to figure out until they got to know her better, too, though it was clear that her skin was a likely one. It wasn’t unnaturally pale like her parent’s after their acid dips but it was paler than normal for sure, just a shade or two shy of being paper white.
And he could see, now, what Harley meant when she referred to Marinette as a powerhouse. It wasn’t very noticeable in pictures, but up close Dick could see the carefully honed muscle of an acrobat curling over her otherwise slim build. Combined with the knowledge that Marinette had been taught at least some serious self defense from a young age, he could see how such a tiny package could be a remarkable threat when necessary.
Marinette grimaced as the other Batfam, who were all nearby staking out her room from different angles, dropped onto the large balcony with them.
“Uh, well. I didn’t break and enter, I rather not get off to a criminal-ly start on my first night in Gotham, you know? But I realized that even though I was able to figure out the exact room you were staking me out from, I realized as soon as I got into the first floor of the building that I had no idea how to actually get to you. So I just climbed the stairs all the way to the roof and scaled my way down to this balcony, and pretended I’ve been here for a while when really I was barely able to hear you ask when I was gonna sneak out. I’m still out of breath, actually,” she put a hand on her chest and sure enough her breathing was still slightly fast. But not enough to be worrying or even all that noticeable. Yet another piece of evidence to show that she was a very active individual and had resistance built up to physical activity.
“Yup,” Robin groused grumpily, crossing his arms. “With all that rambling, you couldn’t be anyone else’s child but Quinzel’s.”
Marinette’s face immediately flushed pink all the way to her ears. “I’m sorry! I’ve been trying so hard to quit that habit, too!” She grumbled a bit to herself, putting her face in her hands. They all chuckled at the display. Red Hood ambled over, draping his arm over her shoulders (he nearly had to bend in half to do it, the height difference was that bad).
“As adorable as your freak out is, why’d you even come up here anyway? There’s no way you’d scale down a ten-story building just to say hello.”
She let out a heavy sigh at that, slowly peeling her face out of her hands. “Yeah, I recognized you guys right away. And honestly, as much as Momma Harley would be super proud of me for managing to give an entire group of vigilantes the slip, she’d also ground me for life if she found out that I saw you guys and still snuck away even though she probably swallowed her pride and asked you guys to babysit me, right? Self preservation. Contrary to popular belief, I do actually have some.”
“Wait,” Red Robin held up a hand, brows clearly furrowed under his cowl. “You expected her to ask for our help?”
“Well,” she made a so-so motion with her hand. “I didn’t think of it beforehand, but it all clicked once I saw Nightwing. I know how much my mom is worried about me, especially since you-know-who broke out a few days ago. She is more than worried enough to ask you guys for help. Even if she does complain about you guys, a lot actually, she also has made it clear that she trusts you guys with the stuff that actually matters.
“‘You know who’?” Batman repeated, arms crossed. If Marinette squinted, she thought there might have been a grin on his lips. “Is that how you always refer to him?”
“What else am I gonna call him?” she asked, face going deadpan. “Sperm donor? Source of a large amount of my self doubt and depreciation? The prime reason I haven’t been able to see my mom in person more often over the years? Oh, I know! How about I just always refer to him as ‘that bastard I wanna punch,’? That sounds good!” she rolled her eyes sarcastically. “Only one person in this world has the right to be considered my father in any capacity, and it sure as hell isn’t him. Genetics notwithstanding.”
Red Hood straight up guffawed at that, landing several rough pats on her back that made the girl stumble a bit. “Yep, I like this one! But as fun as it would be to see you give that jackass a mean left hook, it’s better if he never finds out who you are or knows that you’re here,” the vigilante’s voice got dark and serious very quickly. “He doesn’t forget people he finds interesting easily, and if he ever finds out about the connection you have to him, he’ll be a constant threat in your life.”
“I know,” Marinette agreed with a nod. “And if this conversation was happening two years ago, I’d say that my mom’s concerns aren’t unfounded. That I am too easily emotionally compromised and despite my deep seated issues and hatred for that man, I couldn’t guarantee he would be unable to get to me.”
Batman straightened up, as did all of his sons around him. None of them had missed the ‘if’ there. Batman’s voice went from charmingly deep to it’s usual gruff grumble. “What changed in two years?”
They all watched as Marinette gulped, taking a deep breath as she stalled for time, looking out at the view on the balcony before seeming to steel herself and return her gaze to Batman’s. When she did, it was suddenly full of iron will.
“I didn’t lie when I told Mom that I came to visit her— but that isn’t the whole truth, either. If I just wanted to visit her in Gotham, I would have waited until I was eighteen like we agreed. But I can’t wait, Paris can’t keep going on like this. I entered that contest because it was the fastest way to see you. I didn’t know if I would win, but… I had to take the chance. There was no way I’d be able to get to Gotham behind my mom’s back otherwise.”
“What are you talking about?” Robin hissed, stepping up to his father’s side. “Paris has been silent. If anything were happening, we would have heard about it by now.”
“No, you wouldn’t,” Marinette corrected, never losing that ironclad look in her eyes. “Because a combination of magic and politics is keeping it quiet. No news about Paris’ situation is able to leave the city limits. Magic makes any non-native who leaves Paris think that everything they experienced was just a crazy dream. Natives won’t forget, but politics has all of us under very strict NDAs if we leave city boundaries, and all of our local news and social media is blocked from being accessed by anyone outside the city. But, I figured a little breaking of the rules wouldn’t exactly put a stain on my family’s reputation or anything, so,” she dug in her pocket and pulled out a thumb drive, holding it up for all of them to see. She swallowed again, but never stopped her eye contact with Batman. She held out the thumb drive.
“I came to Gotham to ask for your help. This sped things up, I didn’t expect to see you on my first night here, but two years in Hawkmoth’s Paris has really taught me how to roll with the punches. This,” she shook the thumb drive. “Holds videos of every fight since HawkMoth first showed up. It has all the information I’ve gathered over two years, tracks his movements and lists all his targets and— everything. But I’m not a detective, I’m a designer. I make clothes, I spar on the weekends, I am not good at getting evidence to prove that someone is a magic-abusing villain holding an entire city hostage.”
“We’re gonna need some details, Little Q,” Red Hood finally removes his arm from around her shoulders, instead crossing his arms and looking down at her sternly. “If your city has a villain holding it hostage, is anyone fighting him? And if you do have someone fighting him, why don’t you need our help, or why didn’t they call the Justice League? The JLE should be in Paris, right?”
Marinette snorted, face scrunching up in obvious distaste. “I’ll have to answer those a little out of order. First; the JLE was kicked out of Paris. They moved their headquarters to Italy about five years ago, I’m just surprised they apparently kept that secret from you,” she gestured to all of them, who indeed seemed very caught off guard by that tidbit. But Marinette just sighed and continued. “Though that’s a good thing, actually. We do have heroes, it started out as just a pair but it’s grown into a small team out of necessity. They didn’t call the Justice League because the last thing we need is any powered heroes coming in and making it worse— your league doesn’t have the best reputation for letting newer heroes take the lead even on their home turf, you know,” she pointed out, which made Batman shift a bit guiltily. He knew the JL was often a bit… heavy handed in their methods.
“What makes the situation so bad that you don’t want to bring experienced heroes into it?” Red Robin cut in, sounding as if the whole situation was a puzzle he was determined to sort out. Which, really, was exactly what Marinette had been counting on. She shot him a finger gun, grinning.
“That’s exactly the point! Hawkmoth uses a magical artifact, like I said— but this artifact can brainwash anybody who experiences even the slightest negative emotion. Sadness, anger, fear— anything negative. And it gives them powers, but puts them largely under his influence,” her expression twisted again, this time into a wry little grimace. “I guess you can say that my momma’s psychiatry background has secretly come in handy a lot over these past two years. And Hawkmoth is exactly why I try to tell Momma Harley to stop visiting me— I have worked my butt off to keep her from finding out about his attacks or getting Akumatized. Every time she shows up it gives me a heart attack!”
“Akumatized?”
Marinette waved a hand dismissively. “It’s the term used for when someone is turned into a super powered villain because of HawkMoth. The brainwashing— really it’s more similar to a straight up corruption. The person usually lacks their usual moral compass, and just seeks to soothe whatever set off their negative emotion in the first place. Usually, that means they seek a bloody revenge. And if someone who already has extensive training or extremely strong powers gets Akumatized, guess what?” She made jazz hands even though her face was deadpan. “Extra powers, or amplified ones, for the metas or superheroes who are Akumatized. And imagine what someone with, say, Batman’s level of experience could do if he had powers and no moral compass,” the silence that followed her words was deafening. She just nodded, knowing she had gotten her point across. “I’ve been working my butt off to stay positive, because if I’m Akumatized…” her shoulders fell, and she had to swallow a lump in her throat. “... I have no idea what I’d turn into, but if you take into consideration both my training and my family history… it’s really best if we never find out what kind of magic-powered supervillain I’d make.”
“So, let me get this straight,” Nightwing said after another long moment of silence for that to all sink in. He gestured at her with an open palm. “You’ve been dealing with a terrorist for two years who targets emotional vulnerability, you apparently have never been corrupted by this magic at least to present day, but your mother still worries about you being very emotionally fragile. And your heroes are not detectives, which is clearly what you need or you wouldn’t have asked us for our help.”
Marinette nodded. “I used to be very impressionable. At the start of all this, I was a huge people-pleaser. I got attached to new people in a matter of minutes. My mom always said I reminded her too much of herself— but two years of fighting off a guy trying to get into my head—“
“Wait,” Batman nearly barked, taking a step forward. “He’s been targeting you? You specifically?”
Marinette nodded grimly, mouth a straight line. “Not from the beginning, but this past year it’s been painfully obvious. He might be able to sense the strength of people’s emotions, and unfortunately I don’t exactly experience my emotions very… gently. All of my emotions tend to the much more intense side of the spectrum. If that’s true, then he might know that any negative emotion I feel will make an extremely strong Akuma. Either that, or he’s going by process of elimination. All of my friends, except for one, have been Akumatized already. So has my Papan and my grandmother. But it’s obvious when he’s targeting someone, I’ve felt him try to override my will on several occasions. But I can’t just repress all of my negative emotions forever, so consider us working against the clock right now. That thumb drive has all the details you need about our heroes, how exactly Hawkmoth’s powers work, and so on.”
“Do your heroes know you’re asking for our help?” Red Robin asked, gaze burning a figurative hole through Marinette’s face. “Better yet, if this drive has as much information as you say it does, how did you get it?”
Marinette handed the drive over to Batman, who finally took it and tucked it in his belt as she answered.
“Momma Harley might have a lot to say about your detective skills, but you are all still strangers to me. So consider this a test of your abilities— I expect that you will all go to extreme lengths to verify all of the information I gave you anyway. After all, I’m still the daughter of your most hated enemy. Right?” She met each of their gazes, one by one, with a challenging one of her own. “You’ll just have to figure out my connection to the heroes on your own. And how I got the information, too. It shouldn’t be too hard for the so-called world’s greatest detectives. And maybe this can double as a trust exercise. I fully expect you guys to scour through every inch of my past, and dig up everything you can on me. I encourage you to try to find everything you can, so that hopefully you can decide to trust me on your own once you have all the details laid out in front of you. By the way, for your own sanity? I’d start with reading about all of our heroes’ powers and abilities before you watch any footage of past attacks.”
Red hood rocked back on his heels, trading glances with the other vigilantes before they all shared a nod. Apparently having decided their course of action, Red Hood leaned down and hoisted Marinette up into a princess carry. All traces of her previous iron will melted away in favor of the high pitched squeal of surprise she gave, and once more she became an overly flustered teenager.
“Alright, little cutie. Let’s get you to your mom’s place before she and her crazy plant lady fiancé come hunting us down.”
“I can walk! I can freerun on my own! Mon dieu please let me down! Eeeeek!” She squealed again as Robin slapped a domino mask over her eyes and Red Hood wasted no time jumping over the balcony railing with her still in his arms. The fact that they were lowered down by a wire wrapped around Hood’s waist didn’t seem to take away any of the fright that came with a sudden drop over an eighth-story balcony.

He Would Tear the World Apart
Summary: During a raid, you're taken hostage. Shouto doesn't take the news well, and will do anything to get you back.
TW: kidnapping, abuse, alcoholism mentioned, Enji Todoroki's bad parenting, mental torture, dissociating, injuries, blood, angst, mentioned character death (no one actually dies), a lot of swearing, chains, starvation, dehydration, that sort of thing. If there's anything I missed, please let me know! Also, there is a happy ending, so it's angst to fluff!
A/N: First and foremost, I have no medical degree, I have no idea what it's like to dissociate, so anything medically incorrect is because I am not a doctor, though I am currently working on getting my psychology degree. I'm sorry if this offends anyone, that was not the intention. I have no idea what went through my head to make me write all of this in an hour, but here you go. Also, please read the trigger warnings, and if you don't like it, don't read it. Anyway, I might make a part two to this if anyone is interested. Feel free to spam my ask box, or slide into my DM's if you want. Please interact with me, I adore you all.
Aizawa sighed as he stepped into the conference room. He sat down heavily in his usual seat, and Nezu climbed onto his shoulder, as was custom after so many years, despite the situation they were in.
Again.
"As you have all heard, one of the second year students, (Y/N), has been taken. She was last seen on a raid with the hero she was studying under, and we haven't heard anything from her since this transmission."
Nezu pressed play on a recording and her voice floated through the air.
She was panting, and she was whispering, but Aizawa knew that it was her.
"To anyone receiving this transmission, this is hero-in-training Tempest, I'm pursuing the criminals associated with the gang 'The Numerals'. I've been separated from the others and my comms have been compromised by one of the members. Please, send back-up."
There was a pause where all they could hear was her breathing, and suddenly she yelled, "Hey! You, stop!"
There was static, and then there was nothing.
"We have received information from one of our recon teams that they have taken her to their base of operations, though we don't know exactly where that is yet. We have also, as a school, received a ransom demand. Her parents have yet to be contacted about this."
Copies of the notes were handed out to the teachers, and they all frowned, clearly thinking the same thing Aizawa had thought.
They were a school, what kind of school had this kind of money sitting around?
"What is the girl's quirk?"
"She can create different types of storms in her hands," Aizawa supplied. "As of the end of last year, she could make a hurricane for a few minutes at a time, sometimes a dust storm, and I know for a fact that she was undergoing training over the summer, so it might be more than that now. Under extreme duress, she can make a full scale electrical storm in a building or outside, but only if her life is threatened."
"So, not helpful for getting out of this kind of situation?" one of the other teachers chirped and Aizawa nodded.
"No," he agreed. "Though we should be checking for any strange storms and freak electrical spikes."
"Do any of the other students know about this?" Hizashi asked.
"No, and we need to keep it that way," Aizawa told his husband.
"Why?" Vlad King asked.
"(Y/N) is Todoroki Shouto's girlfriend," Aizawa replied, then waited for that to sink in before he continued. "If he finds out that she's gone, or that's she's been kidnapped and harmed . . . ." He shook his head a few times before he added, "He would tear the world apart to get her back."
"Fuck," someone mumbled, and Aizawa nodded.
Pretty much everyone that was at U.A. knew what that girl meant to Shouto, not to mention the people at Endeavor's agency, and the one that (Y/L/N) was working with.
"Alright, so what's the plan?" Midnight asked.
"We plan a rescue mission," Nezu said. "We're working with nearly every police force in the country to try and figure out where they're keeping her. We have a rough area," he clicked onto a photo of a map, one area to the far north highlighted in bright red. "But there's nothing we can do until then, we need a warrant and evidence."
"The life of a child isn't enough?" Midnight asked. "Especially such a beautiful girl?"
Everyone went quiet, the mood somber and heavy.
"Aizawa, you spent more time with this girl than anybody," one of the third year teachers said, "how likely is it that she'll find a way out on her own?"
"It's a possibility," Aizawa admitted. "She's a very capable student, on par with Midoriya, Todoroki, and Bakugou, but they know what she can do. Not to mention that sources tell us she was injured, though we aren't sure to what extent. And the longer she spends with them is more time Shouto has to figure out what's happening. Not to mention the other students. We need to get her out as soon as possible."
"Agreed," Hizashi added.
It was no secret that Present Mic and Eraserhead had both taken a liking to you when you were in Class 1-A, all of the teachers liked you, and you were a solid foundation for your classmates.
You were a calm presence, and everyone, Bakugou included, had gone to you for advice at some point, though it was all for different reasons.
You tend to be a level-headed person, but when you felt strongly about something, nothing was going to stop you.
People, Shouto mainly, would start to sense the lack of your presence, and Aizawa wasn't ashamed to admit that he wanted you back where you belonged.
"We can't keep him, Shouto I mean, in the dark about this," Hizashi murmured. "He's one of the best up and coming heroes."
"Not to mention," Aizawa added, "that we plan on flooding the streets with her photo. We've already sent it to all of the major hero agencies involved with the search, Endeavor's being one of them. If we don't tell him, his father will, and we all know how volatile that relationship is."
Everyone in the room shuddered at the mention of the father and son duo and nodded.
"Aizawa, All Might, it might be better if you both told him," Nezu said. "You both have the best relationship with him in this room, and you might be the only two that could hold him back if he reacts violently."
"And he will," Aizawa mumbled, already standing from his chair.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shouto knew something was wrong.
He hadn't seen or heard from you in two days, almost three, and the teachers were acting suspicious. There were fewer of them in the halls, and Aizawa was even more tired than usual, with dark worry bags under his eyes that the students hadn't seen since the Bakugou Debacle in their first year.
The last he had heard, you were going on a raid for some gang members that were selling some sort of hallucinogenic drug based off of a mirage quirk.
You hadn't contacted him or come back since.
"Young Shouto, can we speak to you for a moment?" All Might asked, making everyone look up from what they were doing.
Despite the dorms no longer being completely necessary, (the League had backed off a little bit in recent days, and there hadn't been very many Nomu attacks lately), most of Class 1-A, now 2-A, had moved into the dorms for their second year, you and Shouto included.
"Does this have to do with (Y/F/N)?" he asked, standing quickly.
"Unfortunately, yes," Aizawa said, voice somber.
"Todoroki, do you want us to come with you?" Midoriya asked, getting that look on his face.
"If it's about (Y/F/N) then they all deserve to know too," Shouto said. "And I would feel better knowing they were here."
"Of-Of course," All Might replied, glancing at Aizawa nervously.
"(Y/L/N) has been kidnapped and is being held hostage as we speak," he told them, as blunt as ever.
Aizawa ripped his goggles off right before Shouto blew.
One half of his body erupted into blue tinted flames, and the other exploded in a rain of ice, but they evaporated quickly under Aizawa's gaze, and before any damage could be done to the dorms.
Everything went dark in his head, and his feet were moving before he even had a chance to fully process what his former teachers had been saying to him.
"And where do you think you're going?" Aizawa asked, raising an eyebrow as he moved to intercept him.
"To find her," Shouto snarled, and he didn't even recognize his own voice. It was several octaves lower than normal, and there was a rasp to it that had never been there before. "To get my girlfriend back."
"You don't even know where she is," Aizawa said. "We don't even know where she is. Besides, you're too emotionally involved."
"Too emotionally involved?" Shouto said, his voice too calm, his eyes too dead.
Everyone in the room took a step away from him. Everyone except Midoriya and Bakugou.
"Too emotionally involved?" he repeated.
"Oh shit," someone whispered, though Shouto didn't know who it was.
"That is my girlfriend. That is the love of my life and you're telling me that I can't get her back because . . . I'm too emotionally involved? What about when Midoriya went to get Eri? Was he too 'emotionally involved'?"
No one dared to point out that it was nowhere near the same thing, but there was a collective thought about it in the room.
"That is my fucking girlfriend out there," he snapped. "I will work harder than anyone to get her back. I will be the one person wholly invested in making sure that she stays safe."
"And that is why you can't be one of the people in on this," Aizawa told him. "The others are her friends, but you? You are way more than that, and that means that when it comes down to it, you can't make a clear-headed decision on whether it's worth it to try and grab her or not. Because she'll always be worth it to you."
"Damn right she will," Shouto said, staring Aizawa down.
No one had heard Shouto swear this much at once, if ever, depending on the person. He was starting to sound like Bakugou, and the others knew immediately that if you weren't back soon, he was going to blow.
"Look kid, I understand," Aizawa muttered. "I really do. I understand how you feel, I would do that same thing for Hizashi, but I also know what I would do, and we can't have that in the investigation. What would (Y/F/N) want?"
"She would want to be here!" Shouto shouted. "She would want to be teasing Bakugou in the kitchen, making sure that everyone had a blanket for movie night. She would want to be curled up with me on the couch watching bad romance movies that the girls cheated their way into picking out and making sure that I-!"
Shouto stopped as the emotions got lodged in his throat. Tears threatened to spill over as his vision got blurry, and the others were there to catch him as his knees gave out on him.
"We'll get her back kid," Aizawa assured him, crouching down, touching the top of his head softly. "We will get her back."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Your head was buzzing as you came back to consciousness and you suppressed a groan of pain.
Consciousness hurt.
You did a short mental tally of your injuries.
Your ribs were definitely a little bruised, if not cracked or broken. Your lips were split in at least four different places each. One shoulder was definitely dislocated, and the other was hurt in some way. Your left ankle was bruised and swollen, broken probably. Your head probably had a huge gash if the blood running down the side of your face was anything to go by, and you were definitely concussed on some level.
Apparently getting your head slammed into solid concrete by someone who had launched themselves off a ledge would do that to you.
You were in what looked like a basement of some sort. The walls were solid concrete, there were pipes running overhead and dripping on you randomly, which wasn't appreciated, and there was insulation and plaster showing through here and there.
"Finally awake sleeping beauty?"
Your head whipped around to see your kidnapper, but your head protested and so did your stomach, despite the fact that there was nothing in it.
You suppressed a groan, trying to keep your stomach where it belonged.
"Ready to tell us who the informant is?"
"Go straight to hell," you muttered, when you were certain you wouldn't throw up on yourself, glaring at them.
"I still can't believe you were fucking stupid enough to kidnap a child! She doesn't know shit," the other man snapped at the first.
"She has to know something!" the first guy snapped. "She was in on the raid!"
His quirk allowed him to change his voice, so he wasn't using the real one, he sounded like a guy that smoked twenty packs of cigarettes a day.
The other guy you had started calling Sandy in your head. His quirk was similar to yours, he was able to turn anything he touched into sand, and then use it. He mostly made sand storms, and that's how they had gotten the jump on you in the tunnels.
One had blinded you while the other had carried you away, much to chagrin of the Sandy.
"I'm in training," you rasped. "I'm hero-in-training Tempest, from Class 2-A at the school U.A."
They hadn't given you anything to drink in the last two days, from what you could even remember of it, and you knew that you weren't going to last much longer, having been dehydrated when they had taken you.
They had kidnapped you from the raid site, and then spent six hours driving around like morons trying to cover their tracks, before driving for an unknown amount of time before they had dumped you in here. You had been unconscious for the secondary part of the drive, and you knew that with everything going on, there was the possibility you were experiencing retrograde amnesia.
"They don't tell me the important stuff like that. I get told when we're going on raids, and what my part in them is, and that's on the very rare occasion that they happen during my shifts. Most of the time, I'm on patrols around the city," you told them, taking a break in your little speech to spit blood onto the floor by your leg. "You need directions, I'm your girl, but you need to know who's a rat, sorry, I can't help."
You would've shrugged, but your arms were chained to the wall behind you, and every time you moved your right arm it made an awful clicking noise that you knew wasn't natural. Your left shoulder was dislocated as well, meaning your arms were pretty much useless.
One leg was operational, but barely. You were so far out of commission you wouldn't be surprised if U.A. kicked you out to recuperate.
U.A. wouldn't, and couldn't, pay the ransom. You knew that. The best hope you had was that you could act your way out of this, or that they planned a raid to get you out.
They had done it for Bakugou, why not you, right?
Shouto passed through your thoughts, thoughts about what he might do to get you back, but you shut them down as soon as they entered your head.
You were trying to keep him in a safe place.
You hoped that Shouto never learned about this. About where they were keeping you, what they had already done to try and get you to talk.
He was your safe place now, safe and away from this building, wherever you were. You thought maybe if you could keep him out of your head here, it was a way of protecting him from the reality of your situation, even if he already knew.
"She's a kid," Sandy snarled, pointing at you viciously. "She's a kid. You know the Boss' rules about kids and you broke almost every one of them!"
"Yeah, well-"
"Guys, hey, I hate to interrupt," you interjected, "but I really have to go to the bathroom."
They both stared at you for a moment before Sandy asked, "Do you promise to not try and escape?"
"Buddy, I don't know if you've looked recently, but I doubt I'm doing anywhere," you quipped. "My ankle is obviously demolished, my head was cracked open like an egg, thanks to your buddy Darth Vader over there. Not to mention, I'm dehydrated and starving, and don't even get me started on how much my ribs are killing me right now, probably literally. Do I look like I'm in any shape to try and escape?"
Sandy frowned, glancing at you like this was the first time he was seeing the extent of what had been done to you.
"Alright, I'm going to undo the chains, but you can't try to escape, you'll only make things worse for yourself."
"Death seems preferable at this point," you grunted, trying to hide the pain you were in.
"Don't you have healing supplies?"
"How am I supposed to use them when I can't move my fucking arms?" you asked, wiggling your fingers in emphasis. "And you morons confiscated my belt, which had them all in it! You know what my quirk is! What did you think was in it? Explosives? No, I leave that to Dynamight."
"Fuck," Sandy muttered.
"Why do you care so much anyway?" the voice dude asked.
"Because if she dies then that means no money and no chance of surviving prison again. Do you know what happens to people who mess with kids in prison? Nothing good."
You logged that little piece of information away, trying to focus on their features, but with your concussion, your eyes weren't the hottest.
"Can you move?" Sandy asked you as he worked on unlocking your chains.
You couldn't help the cry of pain when your arms dropped to your sides, tearing stinging your eyes as you bit into your already roughed up lip.
"Shit. Can we get a medic in here?" Sandy shouted.
A door opened and someone stuck their head in. Sandy repeated his demand, and the door shut again.
"Why are you doing this?" you whimpered, trying to keep your voice even.
If they were sadists, any fear or pain you showed only gave them what they wanted.
"Because we don't have a choice," Sandy said. "The Boss gave us somewhere to belong, he gave us a place off the streets. We owe him. We would've died."
"Shut up," Smoker snapped, and you glanced at him.
"I have a headache, and it comes and goes as you talk. Please, for the love of all things holy, shut up," you hissed to Darth Vader, wanting to touch your head, but not being able to for multiple reasons.
Sandy touched your shoulder lightly and you cried out again, moving automatically to hit him, but your other arm twinged, bringing more tears to your eyes.
"Sorry," Sandy murmured, pulling his hands away.
You took a shaky breath, waiting for the pain to dull before you said, "There's no way I'm moving from this spot without being in pain, and I'm definitely going to need help."
"Holy fuck, you two morons were two lucky blows away from killing her."
You glanced over to see someone with a med kit strolling leisurely down the stairs.
"Hello Tempest," they said, giving you a bright smile.
"Hello Med Kit," you replied, giving them a grimace.
"You can call me Himo for now," Med Kit said. "Do you mind if I take a look?"
"You're going to whether I want you or not, but sure, go ahead," you muttered. "It's not really like you can make this any worse."
"I could break almost every bone in your body and keep you alive while doing it, so I could do so much worse, but that's not the goal here," Himo told you, setting to work.
"So what is the goal? Since I'm assuming that I'm never going to get out of here," you said, glancing around.
"Why do you think that?" Himo asked, ignoring your first question.
"Because I've seen your faces, I know your quirks, I know a general area of where I'm being kept, unless someone used a teleportation quirk of some sort. I know the school won't pay the ransom, my parents don't have that kind of money, and my boyfriend's father would never pay to see me safe and sound. He would probably twist his son's grief to get him to be compliant," you grumbled. "Besides, I'm a hero, hero-in-training, whatever, it's all semantics. I'm basically your arch-nemesis. Isn't that what every villain wants? To kill the person in their way?"
"We aren't villains," Sandy muttered.
"You break laws put in place to protect people, you attacked a minor, then kidnapped her after assaulting her, and you are trying to get a ransom for me," you pointed out. "That doesn't really scream 'hero' or 'civilian' to me."
"Have you ever though about who writes the rules? About how money can manipulate everything? The system is flawed, and we are going to make sure people know it," Darth Vader snarled. "Do you understand how unfair the world is?"
"Don't talk to me about the world being unfair," you whispered, your voice dropping, every muscle in your body tensing. "My boyfriend loves his mother more than pretty much anyone in the world. Her parents, his grandparents, arranged a quirk marriage, and she had four children she didn't necessarily want. Her husband drove her to near insanity, enough so that she poured a kettle of boiling water over my boyfriend's face because he looks like his father. His father has already managed to get one of his children killed, and he considers the other rejects because they don't have the quirk he wanted them to have. He's a different kind of monster, and he's not in jail.
"My own father verbally and mentally abused me for as long as I can remember. My mother and I were zombies until recently, when I decided I had had enough and my mother finally found the courage and will to leave his sorry ass in the gutters where it belongs. My father always had enough alcohol in his system to make him a human molotov cocktail. I had little to no self esteem until recently, and I still struggle to understand and comprehend that I am worth love. I am still learning to respect myself. So you don't get to preach to me about how unfair the world is buddy, we all know," you snarled.
"The hundreds, thousands of kids out on the street know. The women and men that get raped, and continue to see their own personal monster roam free know. The kids that get hit every day for not being what their parents want know. That's why people like me exist, to put away the monsters wearing human skin. That's why my friends and I try so hard to be heroes. It's not about the glory, or the money. It's about bring people to justice, it's about making sure that people feel safe. It's about giving other people something that we never had."
Silence echoed through the room as what you said sank in.
You hadn't meant to burst like that, but you were sick and tired of these guys using their shitty lives to make other people's lives shitty too.
"Why are you a hero, Tempest?" Himo asked.
"Because I want to save people," you replied. "I just told you that. I want to make sure that every child like me knows that they don't have to be their parents, that there is another option. I don't want the abused becoming the abuser. I want to make sure that the people doing the bad things get put where they belong. I want to help the kids that have nothing to lose, I want to help them realize that they have everything to gain. I want to give people like you hope."
There was no use in lying to them, they were probably going to kill you anyway. Besides, it might help you build rapport, and they might let you go when they realized that they made a mistake.
"People like us?"
"People who think that there isn't another option. People who have been shown nothing but the horrid parts of the world, the horrible parts of humanity. People who don't know what it's like to be loved completely by somebody, both good and bad. People who think that they owe someone who isn't worth one minute of their time. Good people who strayed too far from the path."
There was silence for a few minutes before you said, "I've seen a lot of real villains, people who aren't capable of basic human emotions, I've seen people who have no humanity in their eyes. They are the villains, they are the monster under our beds personified. People like you, you just simply wandered. You aren't lost, you're just further to the side than some other people. It would be easy for you to walk the path again."
You paused, thinking over what you said, then added, "Well, it wouldn't be easy necessarily, but it would be worth it."
"You still have the naivety of a child," Vader snarled.
"Call me what you want, naive, innocent, optimistic, I've heard it all, but in the end, I'm right," you told him.
"And how do you know that?"
"Because, at the end of the day, I know that every life I save isn't just one life," you replied. "That young woman I saved, she might have kids some day, or foster a child that needs a loving mother. That child I shoved out of the way might help the suicidal child in his class. Every life I save touches other people's lives. As hard as it is to believe, no one is ever truly alone in the world. Every smile I give to a stranger might make their day, might help them live long enough to find the thing that makes them happy. That's why I'm a hero."
More silence.
Your face heated, but there was something in their faces that told you they had never thought about it that way before.
"So, is there anything you can do to heal me?" you asked, breaking the silence.
"Like I said, these guys were two lucky blows away from killing you, I'm surprised that you're still alive, actually, everything considered. Your head will heal on it's own, but there might be a little scar left. However, your ribs might take longer. Three are cracked, and four are bruised. Your ankle might need surgery to get it back to the way it was. It's definitely broken, and there might be small bone particles floating around in there, I'm not entirely sure, my quirk isn't that detailed I'm afraid. Not to mention that, from what I can see, your shoulders just need to be popped back into place. One was dislocated more than the other, but it will hurt."
"Can't hurt worse than the state I'm in now. So what can you do? I'm assuming that taking me to a hospital is out of the question."
"Well, I can treat the cut on your head, relocate your shoulders, and I can see if someone else can take a look at your ankle, but everything else will have to heal on it's own."
"So there isn't much?"
"Nope, we don't have the equipment needed for your ankle here, and, like you said, no hospitals."
"Fucking gre- wait a minute, to you guys still have my belt?" you asked, perking up a little.
"Yeah, it's over here," Sandy said, walking over into the back corner, pulling your med belt out.
"Hand it over. I promise there's nothing too harmful in there. There are some painkillers, but it's just Midol. It's all medical stuff," you said, wincing as Sandy dropped it into your lap.
You opened it, taking out a small device.
"What does that thing even do?" Himo asked, looking at it warily.
"It's not a communicator or anything," you hurried to explain. "I made some friends in the support courses, so I asked if they could make me a device that works like an X-ray would. Himo, take it."
He took from you gently, which you appreciated, and turned it all around, trying to figure out how it worked.
"Alright, see that little button on the top left, yeah, right there. Click that button twice, like hitting the home button of a phone."
Himo did as he was told, and the screen blinked to life.
"Alright, hold the over my hurt ankle, and it should be able to show what's going on. Or," you added, "it'll blow up. Hatsume is kind of unpredictable like that."
Himo's hands tightened on it, but he did what you asked, and was clearly surprised when a detailed X-ray appeared on the screen.
"Holy shit, it worked!" you cheered, grinning.
"You have some very talented friends," Himo told you.
"I know right? She's a little quirky, but she's great at what she does!"
"How are you able to smile right now?" Sandy asked, looking at you with something akin to wonder.
"Don't get me wrong," you started. "I'm fucking terrified, but there's not much I can do in this situation. Besides, from what I can tell, other than the initial assault, you people don't want to hurt me. You want something from me. In this scenario, what I'm guessing, is that you want something from me, so you're going to be nice, and make me want to help you out, or make me feel like I owe you one, and then, when I don't comply, you'll either torture me to try and get what you want until I die, or you'll just kill me right off the bat."
Himo winced, and Sandy twitched.
"You guys really hate the thought of me dying, don't you?" you asked, cocking your head to the side, despite the protect of your brain. "Is this one of those scenarios where kids should be off limits?"
"We may be bad guys, but we have certain priorities," Sandy admitted. "Kids are a sore spot for most of us."
You nodded slightly. "I can see why. You guys said something about being on the streets? I know that sometimes kids band together, that's how they survive. I'm assuming you've lost friends."
"Smart kid," Himo murmured, eyes darting over the X-ray.
"Sometimes they give us profile training," you admitted. "Besides, I've been working on my psychology degree."
"Wicked smart kid," Sandy quipped.
"Alright, so I can set your ankle, there isn't anything wrong with it other than the obvious fact that it's broken," Himo said, handing the device back to you. "Riko, I'm gonna need your help."
"With what?" Sandy asked, looking skeptical.
"Can you hold her legs down? I need to relocate her shoulders before I do anything with her ankle, just because I have a feeling she attacks when she's hurt."
"Good instincts," you muttered.
"I'm a doctor," he confessed, grinning. "You learn a thing or two."
"Sorry about this," Sandy said.
"I wouldn't worry about it too much," you told him. "As long as that's all you do I'll considerate your way of trying to make up from everything else."
Sandy snorted, holding your legs just below your knees.
"This is going to hurt," Himo warned.
"I would be surprised if it-"
You clenched your teeth to try and keep your scream in as Himo popped your right arm back into place.
The rest of your body bucked, trying to roll away, but Sandy, Riko, had a firm hold on you.
You panted as the pain started to fade a little in your arm.
"Sorry, I've found it works better when people aren't expecting it," he said.
"Son of a bitch," you gritted out, spitting blood off to the side. "I bit my tongue."
Riko chuckled, shaking his head.
"Alright, now for the other one," Himo murmured. "I really don't understand how you managed to take this much damage."
"At least I only broke my ankle. My friend Deku has broken both arms, both legs, and both hands before. I think he's broken almost every bone in his body sa-"
Himo popped your other arm back into place and you couldn't stop the tears that flowed down your cheeks at that one, your jaw almost cracking with how hard you clenched it to try and keep the noises in.
"Fucking fuck," you muttered when the pain pulsed into something a little bit more bearable.
"Better?" Himo asked, prodding your shoulders.
"Yeah," you admitted, moving them slowly. You dug around in your med belt, pulling out two pieces of metal and a small bottle.
"What is that for?" Himo asked.
You pushed a button on the metal, and they extended to the required length.
"It's for a splint, or a cast," you told him. "Once you set my ankle, you put the metal on either side, and I can spray this one. It's a special kind of plaster, don't ask me how it works, I have no idea what's in it, but it'll hold until my ankle is fully healed, then it'll fall off on it's own."
"Amazing!"
"Heroes, when the respond to disasters, often have to set up triages until other emergency responders can arrive, so we have to know a little bit about basic medical treatments in emergencies like that. So a lot of us have belts and such to keep medical stuff in. I also keep duct tape and glue in here. You never know when you're gonna need it."
You pulled out some painkillers, popping two in your mouth, taking them dry.
"How?" Vader asked, sounding horrified.
"Hate to break it to you, but when you're a teenage girl, especially one learning to be a hero, when you don't always have time for water, you learn to take pills dry."
"TMI," Vader muttered.
"Hey, jackass, you asked," you told him.
Riko and Himo chuckled.
"Alright. Riko, see if you can get a hold on her, this is gonna hurt like a bitch," Himo warned. "Li, hold her other leg down."
"Don't use my fucking name!" Vader shouted.
"You know, I wouldn't have known that was your real name if you hadn't reacted that way," you told him. "Heroes are also trained to pick up on certain behaviors like that."
Li grumbled, but did as he was asked.
Himo situated himself, then said, "Get ready."
The pain had you blacking out before you knew what happened.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"I knew something was wrong," Shouto muttered for the umpteenth time in the last ten minutes. "I should have gone with her!"
"Dude, it wasn't even your mission," Kaminari told him. "There was nothing you could've done for her."
"Yeah you half-and-half bastard," Bakugou chimed in. "Besides, we're gonna get her back, so shut up and try and think of something useful."
Everyone had leapt into action when it had sunk in that you were in serious danger. It didn't take long, and no one wanted to acknowledge that it was worrisome.
They had split up into teams.
Midoriya, Bakugou, Shouto, Kaminari, and Kirishima were working on the maps that had been given to the students.
Momo, Jirou, Uraraka, Mina, and Tsuyu were going over the interviews with raid members, trying to gather up information on what had happened, trying to see if there was a traitor among them, other than the undercover agent that they had been told about.
Tokoyami, Ojiro, Shoji, Sero, and Koda were helping the other heroes do recon missions and patrols in the area where they suspected you were being held.
Sato, Shinso, Hagaruke, and Iida were working on the case files of all the known members of the gang that you had been going after. Surprisingly, those four were the only ones able to hear about the things that some of the gang members had done.
Hagakure was crying softly to herself as she read, but no one could pull her away from the files.
"I have to know," she kept saying. "I need to know about what they did so I can help when we get her back."
Sato didn't know you as well as the others did, so he was a little less effected. He were itching to get you back, but the others had spent far more time with you personally.
Shinso, on the other hand, was powering through them, wanting to know what he had to avenge when they got to that building. He wanted to know what they might be doing to you so that he could have far more reason to get them arrested.
Iida just wanted something useful to do.
"They just cleared building seven in section 3-C!" Aoyama called from his spot the progress computer that they had set up in the common room.
Aoyama was in charge of letting them know what had been cleared, what was under suspicion, and what they had ruled out completely.
"Fuck, that pretty much clears that grid section," Bakugou muttered, forcefully crossing an abandoned apartment building off his map.
"They might need to expand their net," Midoriya added. "No one knows where she is. There's the possibility that they aren't even in that area."
"I hate this!" Shouto burst out. "I feel useless just sitting here!"
"It's either this or you get stuck back on the sidelines," Bakugou reminded him and he clenched his fists.
He just wanted you back safe and sound by his side, preferably with his arm around your shoulders.
He'd been trying to remember the last thing he said to you before you had gone on that raid, but he couldn't remember.
He hoped that it was 'I love you' or something similar, but not knowing was killing him.
"Todoroki-kun," Midoriya said, laying a hand on his arm. "We will get her back."
"Yeah, we aren't giving up on her, no way in hell," Kaminari added, eyes flashing gold in the lights of the common room.
"She never gave up on us, it's not manly for us to give up on her," Kirishima chimed in.
"I know," Shouto said. "I trust you all."
It went unsaid, but understood, that when it came time to get her back, Shouto was going to be the one leading the rescue.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
A week later, Himo came into the basement and said, "Do you think you can walk?"
"On one leg maybe. Why?" you asked.
Your ankle was wrapped in the cast that you had taken out, but your ankle was feeling a little better than it had been. It still throbbed every once in a while, but it could've been worse.
"The boss wants to see you."
"Oh, the big boss," you griped, rolling your eyes. "He wants to see me he can come down here himself."
Himo hesitated, but he nodded, heading back upstairs.
You had known that there was an undercover agent in the gang, but you had yet to figure out who it was.
Every member of the gang seemed to know that you were there, that, or they were much bigger than you had anticipated.
So far, Himo and Riko were your top two suspicions, given that they were the only two that were actually kind to you, but you had a small part of you that wasn't sure.
The door opening a few minutes later announced the arrival of the leader, and you steeled yourself.
"You fucking morons," the man muttered, rubbing his eyes like he had a headache. "What did I say about kids?"
"Sorry Boss, but we didn't have a choice," Li said, stepping out of the shadows.
He had been stay with you for the entire week, and it was clear that you didn't have the kind of rapport with him that you did with Riko and Himo.
You had been trying to make a storm, something, to let the someone know where you were, but you had idea of knowing whether it was working or not. You were in the experimental stages of the large storm capabilities of your quirk, and you were completely drained at the moment.
"What's your name kid?" the man asked.
His hands were covered in rings, and scars littered the little bit of skin his tailored suit showed off.
You had seen Shouto in high class clothes for gatherings that he was required by social convention to attend, so this guy was either rich, or so far into debt that he was on the run from the banks.
"You can call me Tempest," you said.
"(Y/N). Second year at U.A. Class 2-A student, and one of the new public favorites," Li said.
"Aw, you looked me up, how sweet," you taunted. "But like I said, I prefer Tempest, it sounds cooler."
"Far enough," the boss said.
He was wearing a mask that covered the top half of his face, and a fedora type hat, so there wasn't much to catalog, but you did anyway.
"Are you here to kill me?" you asked, crossing your arms over your chest, despite the way it made the chains rattle.
"No, not if you give me what I want," the man said. His voice was deep, and he looked like he was in his early thirties, but you weren't entirely sure.
"I don't know who your rat is," you stated.
"How do you know that's what I wanted?"
"When I woke up on day two, your Sandy man and Darth Vader over there were talking about it. Vader actually asked me about it." You paused, then said, "You guys do realize that I'm right under an intern right? I'm not high enough to know about UC's. Think of me like the intern's intern. I'm lucky I even got to go on the raid."
The man watched your for a moment before he said, "I hate it when people tell me the truth. It means I don't get to have any fun."
"Sucks to be you then," you replied. "So what happens now?"
"You get broken," the man said, reaching out to touch your forehead.
"Good luck with that," you muttered when he pulled away.
Then the visions started.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Everybody get up!" Aoyama shouted. "Up, up, up! Someone called in a noise complaint late last night!"
Class 2-A poured into the common room.
Shouto, Midoriya, Bakugou, Kirishima, Kaminari and Sero ran in with no shirts on, and Kaminari fell trying to pull his shorts up over his Pikachu boxers. Shinso was already in there sitting on the couch with a cup of coffee clad in a t-shirt with a cat meme and dark jeans.
The girls poured in in a mix of pajamas and hoodies that they had stolen from the boys over the last week, their hair a mess and dark bags under their eyes.
"What's going on?" Shouto asked. He knew that his bags were darker than anyone's, and no one had seen him sleep in almost three days.
"Late last night someone called the tip line anonymously to complain about screaming from a condemned building smack dab in the middle of section 1-A. Someone checked into it and there has been a lot of activity in that area lately," Aoyama explained.
He had given up trying to keep up the sparkly attitude, though some of the French had stayed.
"Is there anything else?"
"Guess which gang has been operating in the middle of that area?" Shinso said, having stayed up with the sparkly blond.
"The Numerals," Shouto said.
"Tres bein!" Aoyama replied.
"Have the heroes been notified?"
"They started a conference at three this morning," Shinso said.
"And no one told us?" Shouto asked.
"They wanted to let us sleep. They know how hard we've been working," Shinso replied.
"I'll sleep when we get her back," Shouto snapped, heading for the conference room.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Aizawa shouldn't have been surprised when his former students streamed into the meeting that was being held to rescue (Y/L/N), but he was.
Though that might have been because most of the boys were shirtless and the girls were clad in their pajamas, and hoodies that were clearly not theirs.
"Catch us up," Shouto demanded.
"Shouto, what are you-"
"Shouto, you are aware that this is merely to scope out the building, correct?" Aizawa interrupted, glancing at his former class.
"We don't fucking care," Bakugou snarled. "You're going to catch us up, and you're going to let us join, because she's our friend, and we're the strongest team that you could ask for."
"We can't, in good conscience, let kids into-"
"Do we need to mention all the times that the League has attacked us in the last year? Not to mention Gentle Criminal, Stain, the whole Chisaki ordeal, should we go on?" Midoriya asked, frowning.
Endeavor went to talk again but more students started to talk.
"We can help," Kirishima chimed in. "We want to help."
"Besides," Kaminari added before any of the adults could chime in, "the more hands you have the better it'll be. We can capture more members and get her back. It's a win-win scenario. Gangs are known to be disorganized. If you can get word to your informant about a stealth mission, you might be able to get both them and (Y/L/N) out with minimal risk to them both."
"And we have useful quirks," Jirou supplied. "Kaminari can kill any power they have, Bakugou and Midoriya are good for taking stuff down, so are Kirishima and Sato. Todoroki is more than capable of restraining anyone that he comes across, and I can tell you where people are, how many and so on."
"Not to mention I can make communicators that are much harder to disconnect," Momo piped up.
"People don't really know about me yet," Shinso said, hands in his jeans pockets. "They don't know my quirk, so they're much more likely to fall for me, which is more than helpful for you, since it makes fighting back much less likely."
"We want to get her back, me more than anyone," Shouto said, arms crossed over his chest. "We can useful. Besides, I don't think I need to mention all the times that we've stepped in without your permission and gotten the objective completed while keeping everything legal."
Aizawa sighed.
"We really should just let them help," he said. "They're going to keep pushing, and I don't want any of them expelled and arrested. They are some of the best up and coming heroes. Besides, they all make good points."
"I feel the need to point out," Midoriya chimed in, "that the more of us you take, the more heroes you can have causing a distraction, or the more you can release to recharge and work on other things that are starting to take precedent, like the drug that the gang is manufacturing and selling."
There were more whispers, and finally the heroes sighed.
"Alright, but you're working with Eraserhead and Endeavor, since they're going to be leading the mission with Fatgum."
"We can work with that," Bakugou said. "But we want permission to engage if necessary."
"You would have that anyway," Fatgum said.
"We also want credit if we find her," Sero added. "We aren't going to let possible attackers think that we're defenseless. They take on one of us, they take on all of us."
"That can be discussed," Present Mic assured them.
"This should go without saying," Shouto began, "that I get to ride with her in the ambulance when we find her."
"Everyone assumed that anyway," Midnight told him. "Don't worry Todoroki, no one is going to keep you away from her."
Endeavor opened his mouth, but sharp looks from everyone had him shutting it again.
The students nodded.
"Now catch us up," Bakugou demanded.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
You couldn't remember when you had stopped processing things the proper way.
You couldn't remember a time before the nightmares.
They talked to you, they wanted you to know about an informant. Sometimes Shouto appeared, smiling and reaching his hands out to you. Sometimes your father walked in, drunk as always, shouting at you to do better.
You retreated in on yourself.
You turned to that small part of your brain that you had made to wait out the fighting, the yelling, the hurt. You retreated into the part of yourself that you knew no one could ever enter but you.
Shouto was there like he always was. He wasn't entirely your Shouto, but he wasn't the nightmare either.
He was a figment of your imagination, but he made things a little bit better.
"I'll come," he assured you. "I'll find you."
You were lying in a meadow, a small clearing surrounded by trees that were bent over you to create a small dome of shade.
"I know you will," you told him, reaching your hand out to him.
He touched his fingers to yours, but you couldn't feel it.
You remembered someone in the past calling it dissociating, but you weren't a professional yet.
You had never done it at U.A. since you had never felt the need, but this wasn't something that you would ever be able to forget how to do.
You could still see the nightmares, but it was like it was far away, background noise.
"Do you think that you'll ever go back?" Shouto asked. "Do you think that you'll ever go back to me?"
"Maybe, if the nightmares ever stop. If I think that it's actually you that I'm going back to," you said, watching him carefully.
"Do you remember the last thing you said to me?" Shouto inquired.
"Yeah. I said, 'I'll always come back to you'. Why are you asking me that?"
"Do you remember what I said to you?"
"You said, 'Promise me you'll be safe?' I was about to go on the raid, and you were upset about not being able to go with me."
"Do you promise to remember that?" Shouto asked.
"Yeah, I promise," you told him, smiling a little.
"(Y/F/N)! Oh, darling, what did they do to you? (Y/F/N), can you hear me?"
The nightmare was getting better at looking like the real Shouto, and this one had the same voice.
"Go to him," the dream Shouto said, sitting up.
"Why?"
"(Y/F/N), blink if you can hear me," Shouto demanded.
You forced yourself to blink.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Shouto couldn't describe to absolute relief it was to see you blink.
He had seen the discarded cast off to the side of you, and he wasn't sure whether you would be able to hear him in that state.
"Hey darling, come on, we're gonna get you out of here, I promise," he murmured, touching your face lightly.
"Sh-Shouto," you rasped. "Shouto, wh-what was the last thing that you said to me?"
"Darling, don't try to speak," he told you, trying to figure out how to cut through the chains without hurting you.
"Shouto, what was the last thing that you said to me?" you asked again, reaching up to grab his hand.
"'Do you promise me that you'll be safe?'" he said, eyes roving over you to try and see any wounds. "That's what I said to you."
Your eyes widened in surprise before tears slipped out of your eyes.
"Sho, it really is you!"
"Darling, hey," he murmured, touching your face softly.
You were sobbing now, fully body sobs, and Shouto wanted so badly to take a moment to just relish in the fact that you were safe, but he had to get you out of there as soon as possilbe.
"Tsukuyomi," Shouto called. "Can Dark Shadow cut through chains?"
"Yes."
"I'm on the basement level of the building. I have Tempest, can you meet us down here?"
"On our way," Tokoyami assured him.
"Guys, I have her, she's in the basement with me, we're getting her out as we speak," Shouto declared over the coms, and he was met with cheers and relief that you were okay.
"How many of you are here?" you asked, wiping at your face.
"The whole class is here," Shouto told you. "Most of the hero agencies sent representatives that are here too."
"Seriously?"
"Yeah, people were really upset that you were taken, especially with the role you played in apprehending Numeral gang members on the last raid, and the part you played in bringing the drug to light."
"Wow," you murmured, making Shouto laugh.
"Hold on just a little bit longer darling," he coaxed. "Our friends are on the way."
"I can't believe that it's really you," you whispered, touching his face softly, rubbing your thumb over his scar the way you did.
"Oh darling, what did they do to you?" he asked.
"For the past couple of days they've been trying to break me, they want to know who the undercover agent is. I don't know who it is though, so the leader of the Numerals used his quirk on me. He makes the drugs. His quirk makes you see things, makes you feel things. It's like he can burrow into your head and take the images out of your head."
You shuddered in his arms and he frowned as Tokoyami appeared in the doorway.
"Hello (Y/L/N)," he said, smiling at you.
"Hey little bird," you replied, your smile watery with emotions.
"Can Dark Shadow get through those chains?"
"Of course," Tokoyami told Shouto.
"Hello starlight," Dark Shadow said.
"Hi Dark Shadow," you murmured, stroking the sentinent creature before he tore through the chains like paper mache.
You rubbed at your wrists for a moment before you threw your arms around Shouto, burying your face in his neck.
"Sho," you sobbed, tears back full force.
"I've got you darling," he murmured. "I've got you. You're free, you're free."
You nodded, arms tight around him.
Shouto scooped you up, cradling you against his chest, letting you sob as much as you needed to.
The paramedics that had been called to the scene hadn't managed to get Shouto to let go of you, and you showed no signs of letting go of him, so they had managed to do everything they needed to with you clinging to him.
"She'll need physical therapy, not to mention professional trauma therapy. She's malnourished and dehydrated, not to mention suffering from exhaustion and a very severe concussion. Her ankle needs to be further inspected, and there's some internal damage, some cracked ribs that might need to be taken care of, but we can do some more thorough work at the hospital. I assume that you're coming with her?" the paramedic asked when he was finished.
"Yes, I'm her boyfriend," Shouto said.
"Alright, well, you have to let go of her so that we can get her hooked up to an IV and make sure that we don't make her concussion any worse. You really shouldn't have moved her, but there's only so much we can do about that now," the other paramedic told him.
"I-It's okay Shouto," you murmured, pulling away from him enough to wipe your face off.
Your breathing was ragged, and you looked like you wanted to go back to being unconscious, but you allowed the paramedics to get you onto an IV and a bed with a neck supporter.
"Shouto, will you stay with me?" you asked.
"Always darling," Shouto said, gripping your hand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Forthree weeks afterwards, you were stuck in the hospital. Your ankle hadn't been as bad as it had been feared, you back on your feet in a week, and you were undergoing physical therapy.
You were back to a normal diet, and you were going to therapy three times a week. Well, the shrink came to you, but semantics.
Your class visited every day, bringing you your homework and recorded lessons, most of them crying, and more than elated that you were back, safe.
Shouto, after being given permission by your parents, was being counted as a family member, and he had been practically living in the hospital with you.
For the first week, he had refused to leave your hospital room. He had slept curled around you, despite the machines that you had been hooked up to, he had missed class, staying with you and keeping you company.
There was also the reason of him being the only one to be able to calm you down after a nightmare.
There were nightmares where you woke up sweaty and nervous, asking the nurse on the night shift to light the candles that were all around your room.
But there were some that had you hurtling to the small bathroom in your room, hurling the contents of your stomach up. Then there were the ones that got so bad that you locked yourself in the bathroom, hiding yourself away in a corner until someone noticed and got a hold of Shouto.
They were getting better, and you were getting better about people coming up behind you, the touching.
For a few days after being admitted to the hospital, the only person who could touch you was Shouto.
Your mother had been heart broken every time you flinched away from her touches.
Your father had only come once, and he had been carried out by hospital staff after Shouto had tossed him out of your room.
You had retreated into yourself after that, and had come clean to Shouto about some of what had happened while you were being held hostage.
The therapy was helping, and so was the massive support that you were getting from the public and other heroes that had been in similar situations.
Your friends were very understanding of you not touching them as much anymore, and you and Bakugou were closer than ever, since he had experienced something similar.
Today was your first day back in the dorms, and you weren't going to lie to yourself, you were nervous.
The class had slowly starting moving all the gifts that you were receiving into your room, so you were only carrying a small bag.
"Shouto," you began. "You know that you can walk away if I get to be too much right?"
It had been bothering you for a while, that he had stayed with you for so long. It had bothered you that he had given up so much of his time for you, while getting very little from you in return.
"Why would I do that?" Shouto asked cocking his head to the side in confusion.
"I just mean that . . . well, I know that I haven't been the easiest girlfriend to have recently, and I . . . I have more issues than when we first started dating, and things have changed. I'm way more high maintenance than I was. I wouldn't blame you if you wanted a different girl-"
"Stop it right there," he demanded, turning to you.
His eyes were hard, despite his soft tone of voice.
"(Y/F/N), I don't want anyone other than you," he said. "I don't care if you wake me up at three in the morning screaming. I don't care if you sometimes have days where you feel like you can't say anything to me. I don't care if you have days where you can't get out of bed. I love you. I love you more than anything, and those things are not going to stop me from loving you.
"You are one of the strongest women in my life, and I am not letting you go because you have some issues. We've all got issues, hell, I have issues we haven't even touched on. Those things are just another part of you that I get to love. Alright?"
You nodded, blinking back tears.
"What did I ever do to deserve you?" you asked softly, wrapping your arms around his neck.
He waited for a moment before he wrapped his arms around your waist.
You weren't entirely sure why touch was such a problem for you now. Other than the injuries you had received during the fight, nothing had happened to you that would explain it, nothing you could remember anyway.
There had been some retrograde amnesia that went along with your kidnapping, though the doctors had assured you that those memories would come back with enough time.
And they had. There were still a few blank spots, but there weren't nearly as many as there had been.
"All the right things," he murmured, kissing your forehead hesitantly.
"I love you too Shouto," you told him.
He smiled softly at you, then turned towards the doors.
They opened, revealing your friends and a huge banner with your characterized face on it.
"Surprise!" they all said, though they didn't yell it like you had thought they would.
"Welcome home (Y/F/N)," Shouto said, sliding his arm around your shoulders as you both walked out.
Yeah, this was home.
Before I get into it, I want to state that is EXPLICITLY an analysis of the Characters, and is not intended to touch on how the cc’s played them in a meta sense unless specifically stated otherwise.
Also, this is technically a part two to my other post, which took a more in depth look at Techno and Phil’s reactions to Tommy’s death. It’s not necessary when reading this post, but I don’t address their reactions here.
So. The question must be asked.
Are we [the Syndicate] the baddies?
Yes.
The End.
Why are the Syndicate the baddies?
They got damn logo is a wither skull.
The End.
That's not how this works.
Yeah, yeah. You’re right.
The Syndicate's goals as an organization are not inherently bad. They seem to have good intentions behind them, and the focus on the freedom of it's individual group members is important to remember when talking about it; It is not a government. There is no hierarchical power system. No one is forced to do anything against their will, or surrender any of their rights or power to remain a member. It is not a government.
I also want to address Techno and Phil backing Ranboo into a corner – I see them getting a lot of flack for this, but I personally do not think it is relevant to the greater discussion, or necessarily representative of any contradictions within the organization. It was clearly played for laughs, and after they back off they clarify to Ranboo that they won't force him. Then later when Phil and Ranboo are alone, Ranboo feels safe enough to express that he felt like he was pressured into it, and Phil assures him he is allowed to leave whenever he wants; He is not being forced to do anything, and he is not being coerced or blackmailed.
None of the Syndicate members have done any wrongs against each other in the context of the Syndicate, OR gone against any of the Syndicate's core principles.
That, said, holy shit are they the baddies.
Listen, there's trying to telegraph a meaning or message to the audience and then there's having your logo be wither skulls on blackstone. That is straight out of the skit I keep referencing, seriously.
Okay, but, they laughed at it! It was played as a joke, just like the Ranboo thing!
The Ranboo thing was improv, the Syndicate's headquarters were planned – the artistic choices that they made reflect on what role they want the build and the organization inhabiting it to play in the future storylines.
Wither Skulls kind of have some CONNOTATIONS. Techno is an English major, I don't think he chose the most threatening imagery possible on accident, and then joked about the way people would interpret it just to stir the pot. This reads as hugely intentional.
And beyond that, the jokes they make during this part aren't “haha yeah, we look bad but we're actually good!” they're “you can tell by looking at these that we're the good guys wink wink, this is good guy stuff right here :)” It is a joke about how they are definitely not the good guys. This isn't even a case of unreliable narrators, this is one step down from flat out saying the meta intent.
But okay, I hear you, I'm talking about things that haven't happened yet. The Syndicate hasn't used any Withers, they could be an aesthetic choice. Lets look at what they do in practice.
So, they barge into private property, assess Snowchester's right to continue existing based entirely on their own ideals of what Freedom is, and then only once Tubbo assures them that they have no standing leader do they grant the place their approval to, and I gotta stress this part, continue existing.
In my Quackity meta, I already talked about how Government in the context of a M1necraft RP cannot be compared to IRL Governments on a one-to-one scale. They don't serve the same purposes or have the same type of power. What I didn't talk about was Agency in the context of m1necraft governments.
In an irl government, if you are born into one, you can't really leave without committing a massive overhaul on your life, which can be expensive and difficult, if not impossible for many people. Even in a “benevolent” government, the simple physicality of where you were born can prevent you from leaving it easily.
The same hurdles do not exist in the Dream SMP. People who join M1necraft governments choose to. They want to, either at the beginning when they form one, or later on when they join up. So far, no Government has just Sprung Up and forced the current residents of an area to become dependent on them, except maybe the Eggpire, who's status as a government is... shakey.
And even when people want to leave or separate from the government, they have been historically able to do so without any trouble or any effort from said governments to stop them. Jack Manifold emancipated from Manberg. Fundy and Quackity both left to start new nations. In all cases they were allowed to do so without any attempts on the part of the governments to stop them, either through force, or institutions preventing them from doing so.
The most anyone has lost when leaving a government is their house, which is still usually their property anyway, and is something that is easily rebuilt elsewhere and is inconvenient to move anyway.
The only exceptions to this might be Schlatt exiling Wilbur and Tommy - but even then, they weren’t trying to leave, they were trying to get back in, and of course the original L’manberg revolution, where Dream attempted to force L’manberg back into the Dream SMP, which wasn’t even a government at that point in time.
I don’t consider Phil’s house arrest an example of a government forcing someone to stay a citizen - that was treated less as a matter of a citizen wanting to leave the country and more as a threat to national security. Still pretty fucked up, but it’s a different issue.
What I'm saying is, If Tubbo wants to create a government out in the middle of nowhere, threatening no one, forcing no one to join either through force or desperation, and allowing people to join willingly because they want to, then he should be allowed to do that.
The Irony of the Syndicate, a group of people consisting of some of the richest, strongest people on the server, going around and enforcing 'Freedom' that entails no one person having more power than any other, is absurd.
It shows an extreme lack of self-awareness and/or self-righteousness, as they seem to think that they deserve to be the ones who decide what constitutes a government.
Snowchester is a small independent nation - they shouldn’t have to live in fear of being obliterated if they don’t walk on eggshells to meet an arbitrary standard decided by people who’s only authority on the matter COMES FROM THEIR PERSONAL POWER. No one elected them! No one chose them! They were not “approved” by the server at large to enact this kind of law.
The Syndicate are not a government, but they are an unsupervised power structure exerting their ideals on a land that did not ask for them. Like, These people have invented an actual Authoritarian-Anarchist faction. How the hell did they manage this?????
Back on topic.
Tubbo shows them the crater left by his nukes. The reaction is oddly positive – the nukes are fine by the morals of the Syndicate, apparently. I'd argue that they come across as more impressed than anything else; they seem to respect Tubbo for having gotten ahold of “real” power.
(There's a few good memes out there about “We can excuse nuclear weaponry, but we draw the line at Government!”)
So. By the Syndicate's standards: A single person or group of acceptably equal persons with weapons of mass-destruction are only worth “keeping an eye on” because they might provoke other people.
Like, I consider Project Dreamcatcher to be one of, if not the most morally ambiguous thing Tubbo has ever done, largely because it was all on his own initiative. He holds some culpability for The Butcher Army and Phil's house arrest, but they weren't his ideas and he was mostly following Quackity at that point.
And Phil tells Tubbo, IMMEDIATELY AFTER SEEING THE NUCLEAR CRATER:
“Looks like you've reformed a little bit Tubbo, I'm proud.”
And it's fine. Crimes against nature? Fine. A sign of healing in fact!! Tubbo is having a sweeeelll time and he definitely didn't make these nukes specifically in fear of being attacked by these exact people! Tubbo is doing great. Tubbo is doing fine. Tubbo. is. FINE.
Anyway.
I don't think this presentation of the Syndicate was an accident. Looking at the greater lore of SMP right now, after the Egg is done, their list of enemies is slim, and considering that they seem solely invested in taking down governments, that leaves maybe Snowchester, Kinoko Kingdom, and Eret and the greater Dream SMP.
Snowchester has not been shown to be corrupt, evil, or have any intent to go down that route. The most ambiguous thing they've done is, again, is the nukes. Other than that, it's pretty much your average cottagecore snow village.
Kinoko is presented in an even more morally 'good' light, Karl having founded it specifically for his Time-travel library purposes, which are currently being treated by the narrative as a selfless act, if not downright heroic.
Eret is also a fairly 'good' aligned character atm. He's been on that redemption grind since the og betrayal, and doesn't seem keen on backtracking. He's actively tried to leverage his position as king to make things better, and hasn't been quiet about that. He was also 'validated' by Tommy*, a character who has been described both by his allies and enemies as “the hero,” so take that as you will.
What I'm getting at is, all of the current potential enemies for the Syndicate aside from the Egg, are currently being cast as 'good,' and if they were to be attacked, they would undoubtedly have the moral high-ground, unless something drastically changed.
The only potential shakeups I can think of is are a Dream escape and/or a Wilbur revival, both of which could draw the Syndicate's attention and ire, depending on how things go. That said, it's just as likely that either or both of them would join the Syndicate – Dream still has that favor, and Phil and Techno both seemed to think Wilbur would've agreed with their blowing up L'manberg.
Both of those characters are currently **villains – the fact that they're both prime candidates for the Syndicate is a huge indication of the direction it's going to go as the plot moves forward.
((*I know some people are gonna come at me for painting Tommy as the “deciding factor” of what is morally good, so lemme just stop you there. I'm not talking about Tommy somehow having the 'right' to decide who is and isn't good, and definitely not the right to decide who should and shouldn't be king. I'm saying that Tommy, a character who the narrative treats as, if not a good person, then a person who is trying to be good, was in support of Eret, a character who has also been trying to be good.
Eret doesn't gain the moral highground because Tommy said so, he gets it because a character who the narrative treats as trying to do better, acknowledged Eret's earnest attempts at doing the same.
**I'm referring to Wilbur here as a villain because Tommy seemed convinced he would be if he were to be brought back. There is always the possibility that he's wrong.))
So, to summarize this: I read the Syndicate as being intentionally positioned as future antagonists, if not outright villains of a future arc. They are NOT a Government but their goals are contradictory with their means, and it is important to keep in mind that they plan to enforce their own brand of freedom on people who did not grant them either the authority or permission to do so.
So, uh. Can you tell I loved these streams? They were seriously so good. I kept switching between Ranboo and Techno's POV's trying to keep up with everything. I still have to watch Niki's!
All in all, I'm super, super excited for whats coming next, egg stuff, Syndicate stuff, Tommy stuff, all of it.
The List of Things Hriob is No Longer Allowed to do, Revised Edition:
Not allowed to challenge people to drinking matches. Liquor costs aside, the hospital bills for the ‘suckers’ are getting to be too much.
The above is doubly triply important during any ceremonial or holiday gatherings, regardless of species.
It’s one thing to give ‘surprise hugs’ gently and while walking towards someone, another entirely to give them by teleporting a few feet above the recipient.
Not allowed to summon ‘Tentacle Monsters’ in order to try and practice ‘Aggressive Crochet’
I am not a proud sponsor of Drunk Science Magic Magitech Anything.
I am not allowed to hold classes on ‘Tickling Dragons 101’
I am not allowed to mislabel anything for any reason. Last time I nearly caused a self destruct sequence to go off.
Not allowed to spike anything, with anything, for any reason. No exceptions.
Not allowed to read the Necronomicon backwards while gargling mouthwash yodeling tickling a shoggoth at all. Even to try and prank call the Eldritch or collect on their bets.
I am not allowed to cross any beams of any kind for any reason. Not even ‘because I was curious’
I cannot convince others to cross any beams of any kind for any reason.
Not allowed to try and lecture anyone on Temporal OR Dimensional Mechanics unless they are at least as smart as I am.
Not allowed to make or try and sell a ‘better’ Mousetrap, a Stairway to Heaven, a Road to Hell, an Elevator to Heaven OR Hell, a Slip-and-Slide to Purgatory, a ‘worse’ Mousetrap, a Catapult to Valhalla, a statue of anything, out of anything, ‘Improved’ fireworks, an Immovable Object, a Perpetual Motion Machine, an Unstoppable Force, a Mineshaft to Tartarus, a Highway/Freeway of any kind to any destination, an ‘Infinite Supply’ of ANYTHING, or my own Halloween Costumes without constant supervision EVER AGAIN.
When labeling barrels of alcoholic beverage with their concentrations, I must give a proper ‘approximate’ proof rating at minimum, if not a 100% accurate one. Simply saying it has a ‘Metric Fuckton of Alcohol in every swig!’ is not good advertising, much less an adequate health warning.
If I have reduced a room full of experts/stoic individuals/supposedly unshakable ‘heroes’/‘villains’ to utter shock/stunned silence for longer than five minutes, that is a sign that I’ve done something unspeakable and should stop immediately, NOT to continue while I have their undivided attention.
If I wouldn’t do it to my Own Mother, adoptive or otherwise, I am thusly forbidden from doing it to any and all entities classifiable as Eldritch Abominations, unless considered absolutely necessary by a responsible adult.
If someone tells me anything resembling the phrase ‘I don’t have any fucks to give’, I am forbidden from attempting to support/refute their supposed claims with empirical evidence.
Legal reasons aside, I am forbidden from using alchemy to ‘super-concentrate’ any recreational drug other than alcohol for any reason whatsoever.
I, nor anyone else I know, cannot be urged to come out as ‘Openly Fae’. This is non-negotiable.
Condiments are for seasoning, not war of any scale, type, or interpretation. Conversely, weapons and tactics designed for combat of any sort do not belong in culinary pursuits and/or activities.
I am forbidden from attempting to Yodel, play the Vuvuzela, play the Accordion, play the bagpipes, or play a One-Man-Band harness in any capacity or function whatsoever.
I must remember NOT to reference alternate timelines conversationally with those unaware/unprepared for such temporal topics. Best case I give horrible headaches, worst case I end up causing a massive Paradox.
Even if I am not too shabby as a carpenter, can literally magically make seeds turn to full-sized trees in minutes, and can enter architectural representations of other entities’ spiritual identities, I am forever forbidden from installing birdhouses in anyone’s soul.
I am forbidden from considering Torture as an ‘acceptable substitute’ for mortal injuries. Snowmen are exempt from this for reasons Snowmen sightings have dropped to the point that this is no longer an acceptable target, and thus they have been given conditional amnesty as of time of writing.
Not allowed to enchant any of the following: other people’s clothing without permission, silverware, ping pong balls, laser pointers, laser cutters, laser weaponry, personal massagers, drilling equipment, ANYTHING DEEMED ‘TRIVIAL’ UNLESS SPECIFICALLY REQUESTED BY A RESPONSIBLE ADULT.
While its psychological effects are wonderous when weaponized, I will learn to use the ability to enchant boxes and other containers to become dimensionally transcendental (i.e. ‘bigger on the inside’) in a serial, Matryoshka-like fashion, RESPONSIBLY. This means no more explosive fire-bombs at the end of the package series.
I will learn to stop accidentally encouraging bad behavior trends in my friends: they are often either far too impressionable for their own good, or already have enough shit on their plate as it is.
The above is Triply applied to anyone in the child-to-young-adult ranges; you’re supposed to be a GOOD role model, damnit.
Upon serious review, I am not allowed to blend any drink incorporating caffeine or other similar stimulants with alcohol in any concentrations, especially alchemically enhanced ones, for any reason unless directed to do so by a medical expert.
The answer to any given problem is not ‘more booze’
Nor is it ‘more molotov cocktails’
Claiming the answer to any given problem is ‘more molotov barrels’ or any other variation thereof is right out.
I am not allowed to be the ‘magician’ at children’s birthday parties only allowed to be at children’s birthday parties when free of alcohol and not using magic beyond parlor tricks.
...In retrospect, the prior article also applies to birthday all parties of any kind for people of all ages, unless asked specifically by the host to perform otherwise.
I will not ‘Cry Dragon’ under any circumstances, regardless of the actual dragon population of the given area.
Even in the face of other alchemists or those with an Actual ‘Midas Touch’ of any variation, I will refrain from attempting to convince anyone I can turn items into Beer Cocaine Styrofoam Latex Contraceptive Barriers Seran Wrap Bubble Wrap rubber bands kittens hamsters ANYTHING,
I am not allowed to pretend I am my evil clone doppleganger myself from the future myself from the past myself from an alternate causality/dimension ANY ‘other’ me I or anyone else can conceivably imagine.
In regards to article 12 of this revised-and-updated list, I am ESPECIALLY not allowed to bring in the ‘actual duplicate’ for the above listed reason(s) any reason whatsoever, nor am I allowed to ‘try and prove it’.
I have a past life that has a mythologically recorded history, albeit an incomplete one. I do NOT have hymnals, battle cries, my own language, recipes I actually invented (actually, KYSELO and rye-based sourdough count), any form of ‘back-rent’, or holidays dedicated to myself nor my past incarnation, and I am forbidden from inventing new ones, ‘post-humorously’ or otherwise.
I will planeswalk responsibly: ‘leave no trace’ principles and ‘common courtesy’ still apply.
Even if I carry Tarot Cards, I am not a practiced, ordained, or otherwise effective fortune teller of any kind, and thus anything I say regarding one’s fortune is to be willfully ignored by all those around me.
I don’t care how much it may make anyone laugh, or how magical I may be, I cannot refer to myself as ‘The Wonderful Wizard of Gauze’, regardless how well I work with bandages and linen wraps in multiple areas.
Even in respect to prior rulings about not interfering with other timelines/iterations of myself, I am not allowed to interact with other individuals who are associated with other versions of myself in any way, including indirect communication, letters, ‘gifts’, and intermediaries. That shit STILL gets way too damn confusing.
I am not allowed to use the excuse ‘but I can’t drive’ to avoid my responsibilities even if this isn’t true upon further review, I am also not allowed to be given responsibilities of any kind that revolve around vehicular transportation in any way whatsoever.
I am forbidden to ‘improvise’ my way out of anything I already have a perfectly working solution for. My ‘experiments in creativity and resourcefulness’ are better applied elsewhere than with ridiculously unimportant endeavors.
Not allowed to challenge Demons, Devils of any category/size, and entities associated with Hell to rock-offs polka-offs card games dance-offs karaoke battles drinking contests eating contests any sort of competition whatsoever, regardless of whether or not a soul(s) anything is at stake or offered as a prize.
I will ‘try to’ refrain from using magic to prank people unless they really, really deserve it started it Period and as it is CLEARLY impossible for me to hold myself to this standard, I will at LEAST promise to clean up after the damn mess every time I ignore this ruling.
I will not let my competitive instincts turn everyday hangout attempts into ridiculous surrogate deathmatches, be they revolving around cooking, laser tag, intimate moments, or anything else.
Remember, ‘Adoption’ and ‘Teaching’ may not be mutually exclusive, but both have their own responsibilities and, often, paperwork. This means you can’t just grab kids, say ‘mine now’, and run off into the woods whenever you want to help and/or protect them.
We know you don’t understand what the hell makes you so attractive to such a surprising number of people, carnally or otherwise. STOP ACTING SURPRISED AND DENYING IT ALREADY. Humility has its limits before it becomes self-depreciation, and if this keeps up therapy WILL be used as an intervention.
As an extension of the above ruling, if someone is attractive to YOU, you will not shove trinkets at them randomly from the safety of anonymity, you will GO UP TO THEM like a DAMN ADULT AND TELL THEM.
We know you like trees, they make good staves and walking sticks and you relate to them, we get it. Reforestation is important, and part of your work, but that is NO reason to leave trees Literally Everywhere You Go, they are NOT your ‘Calling Card’.
Because you are not ‘That Kind of Fae’, you need to be up front about what you do and do NOT do. You wander, support life and magic, teach/heal/protect those who need/ask for it, and tend to ecosystems both floral and spiritual. You do NOT make deals and trades for power, riches, or ‘Firstborn’.
In regards to both the above article and article 51, you are no longer allowed to be ‘surprised’ if someone approaches you, asks to ‘bargain’, and immediately drops any remaining clothing on their person.
This list has, against all odds, been trimmed and revised greatly since its original listings, but this is NO excuse to try and make new entries again. We have been over this before, damnit.
#ooc#[reference]#[Relevant]#...God I've missed doing these#ReadMored for Length#...I'm probably going to add to this in the near future I just KNOW it XD#gdihriob#justhriobthings#things hriob is no longer allowed to do
Even the Losers
Chapter 13
Chapter 1 Chapter 12
“You ready for this?” Dick asked flashing a charming, boyish grin that Marinette imagined many people had trouble saying no to. She was not one of those people. If she could say no to Adrien’s most charming, sappy, kitten eyes trained on her and Tikki’s most wide eyed, imploring, big blue eyes begging for cookies after a ‘grueling’ day wrangling the other kwami, she could say no to Dick’s blue eyes. It wasn’t even a contest.
However, she currently had no interest in saying no. She was actually really excited to swing on the trapeze with him… or alone, really at all. A bright smile spread across her face as she took in their trapeze rig. She’d never been on a trapeze, but she was hoping it would be like swinging on her yoyo. She and Adrien had put their superhero days behind them. They still wore their miraculous and of course she still had her guardian duties, but they didn’t transform anymore, preferring to move on from the painful memories and impossible balance. They loved being heroes but the strain it put on relationships, the lies, the responsibility… they never regretted their decision.
Wonder Woman knew how to get in touch with them should their services ever be absolutely necessary, but short of that, they were out. So this was the closest she was going to get to that feeling ever again, short of a world ending event, in which case, she wouldn’t be able to enjoy it anyway.
But this, she looked at the rigging again, this was going to be great. She turned to Dick, her bright smile spreading even wider and her eyes gleaming. “Absolutely!” She gripped her bag tighter then actually took in what Dick was wearing, tight tank top and bike shorts, and looked down at her own street clothes in realization. “Well, I mean not right now. I need to change,” she motioned to herself, “but as soon as I change I will be.”
Dick nodded and opened his mouth to say something but Bruce stepped in before he could say anything. “Good to see you again, Marinette.” He leaned in to do a la bise. He mentally congratulated himself for their first not awkward greeting. It was definite progress. “Let me show you where you can change.”
Marinette nodded and walked in the direction he indicated. She looked back over her shoulder to smile at Dick, but he was already turned around and focusing on checking the rigging. “How was New York?” Bruce asked, bringing her attention back to the two of them.
“New York was good. It was a good meeting. Mrs. Bourgeois wanted to speak with me personally about styling the shoot. I was originally scheduled to speak with an associate editor. I can’t imagine what changed in the last three weeks or so,” she joked with a smile at M. Wayne.
Bruce sighed and gave a resigned nod. “Yeah, once people find out, they can change the way they treat you.”
Marinette nodded, looking away in thought. “It was so strange. I’ve known her for years and all of a sudden she was trying to be nice.” She shuddered slightly. “That woman has never been nice a day in her life. Honestly, one of the creepiest feelings I’ve ever had.”
Bruce grimaced at Marinette’s first brush with being treated differently. “Sorry about that. I should warn you… we should sit down sometime and discuss security and social changes. People are going to do that now, want to get close to you because of your name. Not that you aren’t worth knowing without it!” he rushed to assure her once he realize what he said. “I just mean…”
“I understand,” Marinette cut him off kindly. “I have quite a few famous friends or friends with famous parents. I’ve seen how people try to get close to them because of that. I’ve even had people try to get close to me in order to get closer to them.” She rolled her eyes at the memories of the desperate people trying to flatter her and just dropping in mention of Adrien or Jagged.
Bruce looked at her sympathetically. “Sorry you had to deal with that.”
Marinette laughed at his apology. She laughed loud enough for it to echo off the walls of the hallway. The absurdity of thinking that was something to apologize for. That those experiences even registered on her hurt scale. “Don’t be ridiculous. None of that was your fault. They weren’t even bad. It was something for us to laugh about.”
Bruce gave her a small smile. “Hopefully it stays that way.” He stopped walking and motioned to a room. “This is your room.”
Marinette waited for the ‘while you’re here’ or ‘while you’re changing’, but they never came. And there was something off with the way he said it, a gravity that didn’t belong there. She looked between Bruce and the room a few times and pushed the door open. Like the rest of the house, the room was luxurious. Only the finest furniture and decorations. The room was filled with pink, silver, grey, and white. Everything coordinated and elegant. She was almost afraid to walk into the room lest she damage any of it.
She walked into the room timidly and tried to take in all the details. She scanned the room and gasped, her body going rigid, as her eyes rested on a crib against the far wall. She walked slowly toward the crib, almost like she was in a trance. Her eyes ran over the crib. There were still stuffed animals in it. It was almost like it hadn’t been touched in decades and except for the lack of dust in the room, she would believe it.
“I couldn’t…” Bruce started coming up behind her, “I could never bring myself to tear it down.” Marinette looked up at him wide eyed. She was too shocked to say anything. Her eyes moved to the bookshelf next to the crib. It was filled with children’s books and baby toys. “I can… I mean we can change it if you’d like.” His face wrinkled as he forced the words out. “I know it isn’t exactly,” he paused looking for the words. “I know it isn’t exactly an ideal room for a young woman.”
He sighed and looked around the room. He made his way over to a nightstand and picked up the framed picture standing on it. He sat on the bed still holding the frame. The luxurious bed sagged under him as if it was accustomed to his weight there. “For a while, it was the only part of you I still had.”
Marinette looked back at him, her lips parting in surprise at his admission. “Did I spend time here?” she asked quietly, almost too quietly for him to hear.
Bruce nodded. “You did. The grey cat stuffie was your favorite, MaoMao.” He looked up at her with a bittersweet smile. “You loved chewing on his ears.”
Marinette slowly walked over and sat next to him on the bed. She looked at the picture he was holding. He noticed her interest and held it out for her to take. Marinette took it, almost fearfully. She didn’t know what exactly she was afraid of, more knowledge? New knowledge? Everything changing yet again. Everything had been in constant flux for the past two weeks. She wanted things to settle but she needed to know more.
She looked at the image and immediately brought her hand to her mouth, her eyes already tearing up. The picture was of a much younger Bruce Wayne holding baby her. The look in his eyes was absolutely enamored. She was looking up at him with much the same expression, a wide, toothless grin on her face as she reached out for his face with one hand and clutched the stuffed cat to her chest with the other. It was the stereotypical image of a happy family. She ran her fingers over the image, trying to force herself to remember any part of that day, or any day here or with Bruce.
“That was out in the gardens behind the house. There’s a little creek back there that you loved. You kept trying to work your way over to it. Before you could walk, you’d crawl to it. Before you could crawl, you’d scooch. Before you could scooch, you’d roll.” He chuckled as a far off look overtook his eyes. “You were always very determined.”
“How much time did I spend here?” she asked.
Bruce let out a heavy sigh. “Your mother brought you once a week for a few hours.” He frowned. “Then when you were about ten months old, you spent an entire month here… while your mother was in the hospital.” Marinette whipped back to him, her eyes wide in surprise. Bruce gave a small, pained smile. “You two were caught in an attack that affected your building. Sabine took the brunt of the damage for you two, but there were other kids…”
He trailed off, unable to finish the sentence. Marinette didn’t blame him. She’d seen similar scenes in Paris, bodies strewn about, children’s bodies littering the street after an akuma attack. Bodies she hadn’t been fast enough or good enough to save. She’d had the luxury of knowing it wasn’t permanent and she could save them. M. Wayne wouldn’t have had that.
“I still have nightmares about it,” he admitted hoarsely. She frowned at him in sympathy and laid her head on his shoulder. He froze for half a second before relaxing and laying his head against hers. “It’s why you left. Sabine and I were never going to get married. We both knew that. So I would never be able to keep you close enough to protect you. And if I couldn’t protect you by keeping you close…”
Marinette took a deep breath and let it out slowly. She pursed her lips. “Then you thought you’d do it by keeping a distance.”
Bruce nodded. Marinette nodded too, but didn’t say anything. There wasn’t much to say. She understood the reasoning. She understood making decisions based on nightmares. She had experience with it. The nightmares can seem so real, they have just as much effect on you as reality, sometimes more. They can mess with you in a way reality can’t. She understood all of it. And it helped. It didn’t make it okay. It didn’t make the hurt go away. It didn’t excuse not contacting her even after he made sure they were safe. But it helped.
Bruce suddenly stood up awkwardly. “Right well, Dick will be wondering where you are. I’ll just… get out of your way.” He shuffled stiffly for a few seconds trying to figure out if he should give a hug or just leave. He settled for a wooden pat on the back before retreating out of the room.
Marinette stared after him for a few seconds even after the door was closed before finally moving and slowly changing her clothes. She frowned at the room. Would it be better to change the room to exorcise the memories, or keep it the way it was? She really wasn’t sure. She’d have to get to know M. Wayne better before she could have a hint at the right answer.
She left her room and looked up and down the hallway, trying to remember the way back to the gymnasium. She made it to the end of the hall before she was lucky enough to run into someone. She quirked her head to the side. “I thought you didn’t live here.”
“I don’t,” Jason answered gruffly. She raised an eyebrow at him. “I’m grabbing a book.” He held up his book as evidence of his claim. She raised the other eyebrow but kept silent. “I’m not here to see you on the trapeze.”
“I didn’t say you were,” she grinned.
“Shut up,” he looked away and ruffled her hair. She squawked an objection, making him smile. He motioned for her to follow him and guided her to the gym. “Just make sure you listen to Dickhead.”
Marinette rolled her eyes. “Not going to lie, doing what I’m told isn’t my forte.”
“Hey!” He looked suddenly very serious. He moved closer until he was almost towering over her. Marinette looked up at him wide eyed, caught off guard by the sudden change of mood. “I’m the rule breaker around here. Ask anyone. That’s my role. Get your own.”
Marinette held her serious look for a few seconds before her entire body started shaking from the giggles she was trying to suppress. She pushed through the doors to the gym still giggling. Jason huffed in mock annoyance and leaned against the doorframe. Dick perked up at seeing them and made his way over with an excited smile.
“Whatever. Just don’t wear that,” Jason motioned vaguely to her sports bra, tight tank top, and boy shorts, “around Roy.”
“You know Roy?” Dick asked with a frown.
“Why? He going to give me a workout?” she asked Jason with a smirk.
“No! He is not,” Dick exclaimed, face scrunching in distaste.
Jason shuddered and wrinkled his nose, making a gagging noise. “No,” he said definitively. “Now if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go throw up.”
Marinette gave him a mock concerned look, her eyes open wide in innocence. “Oh no, Jason! Are you not feeling well? You really shouldn’t drive yourself home. Should I call your partner to come get you?”
“Wait, how did you even meet Roy?” Dick tried again.
Jason narrowed his eyes at her. “I hope you fall.”
“Jason!” Dick exclaimed, his expression suddenly serious. “That’s not funny.”
Marinette cackled as Jason walked away. Dick shook his head at her and moved them into the gym. “Okay, let’s warm up first.” He got down on the padded floor and started stretching out encouraging Marinette to do the same. He watched her in surprise as she was able to stretch incredibly well for a civilian. She was better than most of his brothers. “You’re really flexible. Did you take classes?”
Marinette froze almost imperceptibly. If Dick hadn’t spent the last twenty years analyzing body language in order to survive, he would have missed it. She shrugged in an excellent imitation of nonchalance. “I sit behind a sewing machine for hours at a time so I make sure to stretch a lot.” She laughed lightly. “Probably a lot more than I need to.”
Dick watched her for a few seconds before nodding. “Right,” he said slowly. He looked her over one more time. “Well it’s working.”
Marinette gave him an overly wide smile. “Thanks.”
Dick eyed her suspiciously again but got up and grabbed something off the wall. “Now,” he held up a harness for her, “I’m going to hook up a harness. It’ll keep you from falling too fast and help with the moves.”
Marinette frowned at the thought. If she was hooked up, she wasn’t going to be able to fly like she wanted to. It wouldn’t feel like she imagined, like she just now realized she needed. She needed to feel the weight of gravity on her body pulling her down. The harness was going to throw her weight off. It was going to interfere with her movement. “Can we try it without the harness?” she asked tentatively.
Dick frowned at the idea, clearly not comfortable with it. She may have swung a few times with the heroes, but that wasn’t nearly enough to be safe on the trapeze. Maybe he could convince her to wear the harness for the first few swings and she’d realize how helpful it was. He looked back in her eyes and faltered. She was looking at him with wide, hopeful, innocent eyes. How was he supposed to say no to those eyes? “I…” he sighed and looked down defeated. “Do you know how to fall?”
Marinette gave him a deadpan look. “I’m the world’s foremost expert at falling.”
Dick blinked a few times and gave the deadpan look back at her. “That’s not making me feel better about not using the harness.”
“Can we try it?” she asked hopefully. “Just a few swings to get a feel for it and if I’m falling too much, we can try the harness.”
Dick sighed and looked down. It was the same logic he had been planning on trying, but she was using it against him. He ran his hand over his face in defeat. Yeah, she’d fit in the family perfectly. He glanced over to see Bruce peeking in and his eyes widened in realization. If he let Bruce’s daughter, his newly brought into his life daughter, get hurt, he’d never forgive Dick. “Okay, here’s the thing,” he started giving her his most pleading eyes. “If we do this without the harness and you fall, Bruce is going to skin me alive.”
Marinette gave him an understanding smile. She laid a reassuring hand on his arm and Dick breathed a sigh of relief and waited for her to agree to the harness. “I’d protect you, but you won’t need it. We start slow and build up. Trust me?” She turned her hopeful eyes back at him but they were somehow even wider and more pleading.
Dick groaned. “Fine.”
Marinette grinned brilliantly and jumped up and down in excitement. “Thank you! Thank you!” She jumped at Dick to give him a hug. Dick almost startled in surprise. A family member that wanted hugs and gave them freely? He hugged her tightly. Yes, please. Hopefully, everything would be fine and she was as good as she thought she was and nothing would happen and Bruce wouldn’t kill him, so he would be able to get more hugs in the future.
They climbed up on opposite sides and stood on the platforms facing each other. Dick got into position and showed Marinette so she could do the same. When she was positioned, he nodded and pushed off from the platform. “Okay, let’s start with getting the rhythm. It’s kind of like getting a swing into rhythm,” he explained. “When you’re ready to try, go ahead and let go.”
Before he even finished his sentence, Marinette had pushed off and started pushing the bar into a matching rhythm. Dick blinked a few times at how quickly and smoothly she’d gotten into a matching rhythm. It was a skill people worked at for days, sometimes weeks. Getting into a rhythm wasn’t incredibly difficult, most people got that somewhat quickly.
It was maintaining the same rhythm and matching your partner’s rhythm that took time and training. Honestly, if learning how to get the trapeze to swing smoothly was all she learned out of this time, he would have been impressed. But she was already far past that. She was swinging like it was second nature, like the physics of swinging and gravity were inherent.
“Good job,” he said a bit breathlessly. “Ready to try a simple move?”
Marinette grinned back and nodded in understanding before remembering he wouldn’t always be able to see her. She had to be very vocal about everything so he could react properly. “Yes,” she called out loudly.
“Okay, when I say go, let go of your bar and hold out your arms for me to grab.”
“Okay,” Marinette called out. She focused on maintaining her momentum and enjoying the way the air pushed back against her as she glided through it, the resistance creating a familiar feeling of a breeze against her skin. The baby hairs around her hairline, the only hair free of her tight bun, were blowing back and forth as she moved.
As soon as she heard Dick say ‘go’, she let go and arched her back, reaching for him. She free fell for only a moment before Dick caught her forearms in a strong grip. She grabbed his forearms too in a tight grip and looked up to meet his eyes. Their eyes met, exhilarated smiles on both their lips.
Dick grinned in surprise at the success. He’d been expecting her to fall, to be honest. The first time doing a catch almost always resulted in falling unless the person was well trained or well prepared, which he admittedly hadn’t done for Marinette. It was a fumble of arms reaching and tangling, grasping for each other, but moving at the same time, trying to anticipate but guessing wrong. But she understood how to do a catch. She understood to trust her partner to catch her.
He grinned wider at what that meant; she trusted him! His face suddenly turned serious. “Okay, here’s the tricky part. I’m going to count to three. When I say three, I’m going to let go. You’ll need to twist around and grab the bar.”
Marinette’s expression turned serious as well, though her eyes still sparkled with delight. “Understood.”
Dick nodded. “One… two… three.” He let go on three and Marinette twisted in time to grab the bar, both of them frozen for a moment in weightlessness while she waited for gravity to take over.
She swung away from Dick but quickly flipped on the bar so she was facing him again. Dick chuckled and shook his head. “Let’s get more complex, what do you think?”
Marinette’s grin got wider and her eyes impossibly brighter. “Yes, please.”
Dick laughed loudly, his laughter echoing off the walls, her laughter quickly joining his. They swung together for almost half an hour, trying increasingly difficult tricks until they finally got to one Marinette couldn’t do. Dick’s eyes widened in surprise as she fell in front of his eyes. He was so accustomed to her keeping up with him, it was a shock when she didn’t. His heart started pounding and he scrambled to get back to the platform until he heard Marinette’s giggles. He looked down and saw her bounding across the bouncy net toward the ladder.
When she got to the platform she looked over at him with a grin. “Try it again?”
Dick grinned at her and flipped back over on his bar. “Let’s go then.”
The trick ended in the same result, but Dick joined her in the net on purpose this time. “Maybe try to build up to that?” Dick suggested.
Marinette nodded as she tried to catch her breath. “Sounds fun.”
“Did you want to try it on your own?” Dick offered. “You seem like you’re comfortable up there.”
Marinette’s eyes widened in excited surprise. “Really!”
Dick chuckled and nodded. “Have at it.”
Marinette bounced back over to the ladder and quickly made her way to the bar. She started swinging and twisting on it, using the zero gravity to do solo tricks. Dick was so engrossed in her performance he almost forgot to get out of the net. She was so graceful and elegant, like she knew exactly what gravity was going to do down to the millimeter. It wasn’t at his level, she clearly hadn’t been trained. But she was also clearly not a novice.
After a while she fell down into the net again breathing heavily. She grinned at Dick. “That was amazing. Thank you! I didn’t realize how much I needed that.”
Dick helped her down from the net, immediately returning the hug she gave him before he could set her down. “I had fun too. Anytime you want to use it, feel free. Just come on over.”
Marinette gave him a small nod. Her smile still hadn’t died down at all. “Let’s cool down.” Dick motioned toward the padded mat again. He and Marinette sat across from each other and started stretching again. Dick watched her as she stretched, that spark never leaving her eyes. He knew the feeling well, that felling you get from flying, the freedom, the release.
Images of her growing up with them, him being able to teach her trapeze from the time she was a baby ran through his head. Fantasies of being a big brother to her, keeping her safe, teaching her, sharing the feeling of flying together… all of it gone. No chance to happen. Because Bruce walked away from her and straight to him.
“I’m sorry.” His voice was heavy, weighted down with guilt.
Marinette quirked her head to the side and blinked a few times. Her mind raced trying to figure out what he could possibly be referring to. “Did something happen?”
Dick shook his head, his eyes narrowed slightly as he tried to figure out how to say what he was feeling. “I.. I’m… he… I was the one he took in after…”
Marinette’s eyes softened immediately. She laid a hand on Dick’s arm. “Dick,” she started softly. “You don’t have to apologize for getting adopted, for finding a home where you felt safe and loved. You didn’t do anything wrong,” she assured him.
Dick searched her eyes for any evidence she didn’t believe what she was saying, but there was only sincerity and a touch of bittersweetness. “Neither did you.” His voice was sure and supportive. His eyes bored into her, pushing against her boundaries.
Marinette looked away quickly. She hummed noncommittally. “Except going to the gala,” she said wryly. “I should have just let Adrien take care of it. As soon as I found out I should have…” she trailed off, unsure how to end it.
Dick moved closer to her and threw his arm over her shoulder, pulling her against his side. “But then we wouldn’t have met for who knows how long,” he offered with a bright smile.
Marinette let out a heavy breath and smiled at how hard he was trying. She looked back up at him from the corner of her eye. “And what a shame that would be.”
Dick’s grin got wider. “Exactly!” He hugged her closer for a few moments as the smile slowly faded from his face. “I just want to let you know I’m here for you. I'm sure this is really overwhelming and Bruce has never been good with conveying... or feeling... emotions. But if you need anyone to talk to, I’m here.”
He moved away so he could see her more clearly. “I missed out on being your big brother growing up and we’ll never get that time back. And to be honest, I’m extremely upset with Bruce about that. But I’d like to make up for that lost time now. So if you need anything, I’m here. You want anything, I’m here. You want to talk, I’m here. You want to yell or scream at somebody, I’m here. If you have a problem you need help with, I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
Marinette looked up at him in surprise. She blinked a few times uncertain what to say. “I…” She closed her mouth quickly, still not sure how to finish the sentence. After a few moments she smiled softly at him. “Thank you, Dick.”
Dick pulled her in for another hug, enjoying the feeling of her reciprocating. Maybe she could show their other siblings how to do that without it being a life threatening situation. Dick grinned widely as he squeezed her tight and rested his head on hers. “Or if you just want a hug. To tell you a secret, I give the best hugs in the family.”
Marinette scoffed playfully as she pulled away from him. “I don’t know, Jason gives good hugs.”
Dick snapped his eyes to hers. “Jason gives hugs!”
They almost jumped with Bruce walked in with a wide smile. “How was it?” He watched them with a smile as they stood together and stayed close after rising. It was absolutely no surprise that Dick was able to get so close to her so quickly, but it was still reassuring to see it.
“It was amazing!” Marinette enthused. “I had so much fun! I can’t wait to do it again.”
Bruce smiled. “Any time you want,” he promised. “Any time you want to come over, feel free. No need to call first.” He paused for a moment. “Although maybe not in the middle of the night. “It would wake Alfred up. He’d be more than happy to let you in but we already put him through so much.”
Marinette smiled and chuckled. “I understand. I’ll keep the visits to the daytime.” She looked up just in time to see Dick giving Bruce a significant look. Dick played it off with a wide smile that Marinette pretended to buy. She also pretended not to notice the look Bruce gave him back. She shuffled a few times before looking quietly between them. “Um… I’ll just… I’m going to take a shower and change back.”
Bruce nodded with a soft smile. The smile was so convincing, Marinette would never have thought anything suspicious was going on if she hadn’t seen the look they gave each other… immediately after Dick spent the afternoon with her. “You know the way back to your room?”
Marinette nodded rapidly. “Of course. Thank you.” She turned to Dick again. “And thank you. This was a lot of fun.”
Dick shook his head with a smile. “You don’t have to thank me, Marinette. I wanted to spend time with you. I look forward to doing it again.”
Marinette nodded to him and left the room as quickly as she could without drawing suspicion. As soon as she was out of eyesight, she speed walked back to the room, closing the door quickly behind her. She leaned against the door and banged her head against it lightly a few times. It was okay, she tried to reassure herself. They didn’t know her yet, of course they would have secrets and want to talk about what they learned about her. She knew that. But it still hurt.
As soon as Marinette was out of ear shot, Bruce turned back to Dick. “How did she do?”
“She’s done that before,” Dick reported to Bruce, keeping his voice low so Marinette couldn’t hear him.
“We knew that,” Bruce answered just as quietly. “She said the heroes took her around sometimes.” He pursed his lips tightly at the thought. Even knowing nothing happened, he wasn’t happy about it. The only thing he could think of was all the things that could have happened to her if their villain would have found out.
“No,” Dick cut in before Bruce could brood too hard. “She’s done something similar enough to be comfortable with it, enough that she soared, she flew. Enough that her body instantly fell into the rhythm, into trusting someone else to catch her. Those things are learned, Bruce. I think she had a closer relationship with the heroes than we think she did.”
Bruce narrowed his eyes at Dick, processing his words. He nodded and looked back to the hallway Marinette had disappeared down. “The heroes disappeared. Diana said she can’t even contact them anymore. Marinette’s the only one who can tell us more.”
Dick nodded. “I’ll see what I can do when we get together on Monday for Duke’s reading.”
“Carefully,” Bruce cautioned. He glanced over to catch Dick’s flat look. “I don’t want to push her. She’s your sister. She’s family, not a source. She’s not a suspect. She’s not even a victim. We don’t need this information. It would be nice to know, but we can live without it. She’s allowed her privacy. Plus she’s smart. You start asking questions, she’s going to get suspicious and may get upset we’re digging into things she doesn’t want to talk about.”
“I know how to talk to people, Bruce,” Dick scoffed. “I’m better at talking to your kids than you are, if you recall.”
“I’m well aware,” Bruce conceded. “I just… I don’t want to upset her. She’s allowed her privacy.”
“And I’ll respect that. And her,” Dick assured him. He paused for a few seconds before he broached the next subject. It was going to be delicate, one that neither of them wanted to consider. “So the question is, if she did have a closer relationship with the Parisian heroes, when did her relationship with Adrien start. And why.”
Bruce furrowed his brow. “You think he started it because he knew she was close to the heroes? You think he was working with his father?” He stared intently at Dick trying to gauge how serious he was about this. “It doesn’t make sense for him to still be with her if that’s all it was. And Ladybug told Wonder Woman Adrien was not involved,” Bruce said quietly. “She vouched for him.”
“And we trust her word?” Dick asked in the same tone.
Bruce paused as he thought about it. They really didn’t know Ladybug at all. She’d disappeared after the last fight and only Wonder Woman seemed to have had any contact with her, and limited contact at that. The League had never gotten the chance to gauge her competence in areas outside of fighting. “She said he helped give evidence to take his father down,” he started tentatively.
“But…” Dick prompted.
Bruce let out a deep sigh. This was not going to go over well with Marinette, but if Adrien was using her, they needed to know. “But it could be a cover. We don’t know enough to completely excuse him and we don’t know enough about Ladybug or Marinette to know how good of a judge they are.”
Dick nodded. “We proceed with caution.”
“Extreme caution,” Bruce stressed. “You heard how she talked about him at dinner. She’s very protective of him. Questioning Adrien is going to take more delicacy and tact than questioning her, I think.”
Dick nodded and looked down the hallway toward her room. He would have to spend the next few days doing research before they met up on Monday.
Tell me about the tanks of judgement
i need to. talk about the priest more for that. so just a little bit.
priests are... conduits, by nature. they are speaking podiums and they are like. megaphones but quiet. a god has three voices, Ethereal, Loud, and then "normal" but even normal can be a lot if you aren't. you know, a champion, and used to hearing gods all the time. so the priests were very much a solution to that, and they are the mortal voice of the immortals.
priests can be biased! priests often are biased, and it's necessary for them to be, actually, but it should be said there are no priests of ianite. not for any reason in particular. there just has never been any mortal she has ever appointed and accepted as one and people have Tried. a priest's bias dictates what god they speak for because it is so rare that mianite and dianite will share a single mortal soul- which is why declan is so fucking weird, and why the tank is not that weird at all.
declan is mianite's priest, front and center. (the closest we have to a dianitee priest would be farmer steve). but declan is speaking for both of the gods in the tank of judgement scene. not all three of them, but both of them. and for dec to judge he has to understand. mianite's opinions on all of the champions and heroes is overpowering, but dianite still chimes in. tom's in trouble. tucker and sonja are safe. jordan is in trouble but is saved (changed their minds. who changed who's mind. what is happening here.) but the tank has it's own thoughts as well- not because it's alive, or anything, but it's hosting powers of gods.
hosting the power of one god.
judge, jury, executioner, and the scales tip.
ianite does not have a priest but the tank of judgement is very much a part of her "message", it's a way for her to "speak." tom is in trouble- he's antagonized her boy. tucker and sonja are safe- they've been kind to him. jordan is jordan is jordan, and the gods did not change their mind, the tank changed it for them.
(and in isles, why tom so easily slipped past the cracks, why he was able to lie- because that ianite believed him before he was ever judged, and he held one of her favors, and she felt he was hers over anything else. and she was lied to.)
