so. this scene has been talked about a lot:

I think this scene is a really interesting example of the criminal minds writers giving tiny pieces of character backstories that are never elaborated upon, (or, more broadly, forgetting early established character details) because unlike a lot of examples where lines are said and immediately forgotten about, I do think this revelation informs a lot of Hotch's character. I'm not necessarily saying that the writers always had it in mind when writing Hotch that he experienced childhood abuse, but I do feel like you can see the ways in which he was affected. I don't know—this made more sense in my head, but it feels a little less forgotten about and a little less thrown in than some other examples. I think a big difference between this scene and some later ones is that:

The trauma happened pre-series

and

It was established in the first season.

criminal minds isn't great at letting their characters be affected by their in-series trauma for more than a few episodes (and then maybe it'll come up once or twice down the line because the writers remembered it happened) and a lot of later instances* of characters being revealed to have some major pre-series trauma suffer because the impact it would have reasonably had on them isn't consistent with earlier portrayals and sometimes even contradicts established information.

not that it can't be interesting to look at those earlier portrayals of their characters with the backstory that is added later. again, this all made more sense in my head: essentially, the reason i think this feels different to me is that the writers knew when they started writing hotch that he was abused as a child, while other characters who have traumatic backstories revealed have those backstories added much later, and so the writers have a not-great choice between showing the effects their trauma had on them when there was no sign of it earlier, or moving on with their character as if none of it ever happened.

*i'd like to quickly establish that i'm not talking about morgan here. that was also a pretty early reveal and feels consistent enough with early characterization that i wouldn't be shocked if the idea was first floated while season one was being written

#as for how i think hotch's childhood abuse actually affected him #that would require a longer post and for me to watch more episodes so i have more evidence #but the very simple one sentence version is that i think hotch fears becoming his father #was it his biodad or stepdad? i dont remember. he had both right?#either way. if criminal minds writers were like #hey nineteen year-old canadian #for some reason we want you to cast hotch's father for a flashback #i would want the actor to look as much like thomas gibson as possible to really drive that point home #even if it WAS his stepdad #and if it was his stepdad it could fuck people up even more because instead of being told he looks like either of his biological parents #he'd constantly be told how much he looks like his unrelated abuser #man im sorry im just rambling in the tags ill shut up now #criminal minds #criminal minds rewatch #criminal minds s01e08 #natural born killer #aaron hotchner #not fic #criminal minds 1x8

I was reading back through caged lungs and I realized just how many times Donnie got hit in the head during the last fight and how hard, no wonder Leo is concerned about brain damage.

Also, when Donnie goes to see April at the end of chapter 2, is he just dissociating really hard or is that an actual physical symptom from the…everything really!

not to mention the oxygen deprivation with raph throttling him! the last fight is so visceral and nasty and it was the final nail in the coffin when it came to donnie's issues physically and mentally, because although he would have been terrified of them regardless i dont think it wouldve been "inconsolable screaming heap at the sound of raph's voice" like it was in the early bit of CW.

and id mark that as dissociation personally. the second he registered as being in relative safety he kind of shut down because he wasn't able to process it, which had kind of been a running coping mechanism through the last month or so of CL. MIND YOU: IT IS NOT HELPED ALONG BY THE BRAIN FOG CAUSED BY HIS TIME IN ISOLATION, its a nasty concoction of problems. and also yeah physical exhaustion definitely doesnt help! he ran all the way to april's apartment while actively starving, after all.

although itll get better after [REDACTED PLOT THREAD] is handled, i think dissociation is gonna be something donnie will be dealing with for years, because spending four days in a quiet, enclosed dark space has some extremely messed up consequences for your brain and body. it was also in general something he used to cope under the abuse, so i could see him having issues with it when he's not in his right mind (sick or sleep-deprived, for example), i could see him regressing back to that old mindset when something like that happens. his perception of reality is permanently a little fucked :(

#ask #canary continuity #theres a lot of factors you have to put together for donnie's behavior right now #he's been so stressed that he's been running a low grade fever #the consequences of being in solitary are still taking a toll on him #his brain automatically shuts down as a coping mechanism when triggered #and he's absolutely dealing with both ptsd (notably about the closet the final fight and mikey attacking him in the kitchen)#AND cptsd. he definitely has cptsd. this is for absolute certain cptsd #+ he's still on some strong painkillers which are distorting his perception of reality #the source of the nosebleeds could very well be stress to be optimistic. but. well =) who's to say #everythings horrible but donnie is STILL too overwhelmed to process #its going to hit him very soon and its not gonna be pretty!#also despite his developed claustrophobia ive been haunted by the mental image of him waking up sick and immediately trying to hide-#-under his bed like a YEAR after all of this and Ouurgghhh #one of them comes looking for him when he doesnt leave his room and he just claps his hands over his mouth when he hears their footsteps #and his mind is just an endless mantra of “hes going to find me hes going to find me hes going to find me”#he doesnt know what he's so scared of. he just knows that something bad is going to happen and he needs to stay quiet #(remember when leo dragged him out of the laundry room? that left scars)#just thought i should share that cause it wouldnt leave my brain <3

Even tho Gordon doesn't really know Gman, just due to being Tommy's dad he gets his own flower :) . Although none of Gmans flowers will sprout on Gordon himself, they are scattered around a few small spots of Black Mesa (any time Gman freezes time leaves these flowers)

Tommy was the second to last to remember the resets, and unlike the other times Gordon was killed by his friends, this one was accidental. During the fight with Gordon later, he's a bit easier on Tommy then the others.

update: still in burnout/seasonal affective hell (and now i'm snowed in ✌️) BUT I have found out that I can watch various episodes of River Monsters, Mythbusters, and Kitchen Nightmares for free, completely legally (not sarcasm). so that's nice

#i'm trying to think of what other shows I loved growing up.#my mom let me watch house and scrubs with her sometimes. and i liked a lot of hgtv shows but they were all paywalled when I checked :(#i remember watching a lot of how it's made too.#omg and I had billy the exterminator MEMORIZED. he relocated so many venomous snakes and he's why I love them so much today.#not sure why my at-the-time devout catholic mother was letting me at 7 watch some punk pick up rattlesnakes but i love her for it.#tbh he's one of those people i have vowed to learn nothing about to preserve my childhood respect and reverence towards him.#it was GENUINELY a huge formative influence for me and I credit my love of reptiles to that show and random documentaries.#jgndkfjgndfkjg oh god also re: other shows- this one's maybe a little niche but my grandpa always had Hee-Haw reruns on when i visited.#does ANYONE here know what I'm talking about???? that variety show with the donkey in the intro?#i mean.
