i hate when people say that a song is an anthem for a group of people because like, if it is one, then it will just be one
like, people shouldnt need to say 'did i just create the new ___ anthem??' or 'omg guys we have a new anthem!!'
especially cause people say it about songs that arent that different from literally any other song/about songs that have nothing to do with anything ??
#remembering a few years ago when everyone on the internet was like 'sweater weather is the bisexual anthem!' bitch where#theres nothing bisexual about that song and id never even heard of it before anyone said that#also apparently there was(is?) a trend on tiktok where people tried making modern emo music and were like#OMG I CREATED THE NEW WELCOME TO THE BLACK PARADE GUYS#apparently the main person doing that was being exaggeratory on purpose because it got more clicks. which i respect. but still#if a song will define a group then the song will be passed around and played and mentioned naturally#it shouldnt need to be said that its the defining song of the group. it will just be that#like. every emo kid knows welcome to the black parade. because everyone always mentioned it and played it and stuff#no one (that i saw) went THIS IS THE SONG THAT DEFINES ALL EMOS GUYS IF YOU DONT THEN UR FAKE#my post

What Your Favorite Black Bull Says About You
I’m sure this list has been made already, but has a list been made with these sizzling hot takes that are specifically mine? Doubt it. Before you go in, this list was made for fun and not an actual attack on your character lol
Asta: You don't have the patience for this wizardry book nonsense, not when all you need is your huge muscles and willingness to throw hands. Essentially you're this post:
Noelle: It doesn't matter whether you love or loathe her siblings, you all want them to be punished on such a grand scale it resets the karmic balance forevermore, preferably in a hilarious fashion. You also think her next few outfit spells should include pants and a sports bra so Tabata can't traumatize you ever again.
Magna: You like delinquent tough guys with hearts of gold, or you like underdogs who never actually get a mysterious powerup that make them strong- or both! In any case, Magna is your special little boy and when he did THAT in the manga you damn near exploded. If you haven't seen it yet... I guarantee you will.
Luck: You like characters that act all bright and cutesy but... deep inside their hearts... they harbor d̵͍̲͑ä̴̜̻́͝ȓ̷̗̇k̶̟̿͘n̵̮͈͑ẻ̴̥ş̸̪̐͊s̴̙̀̐. To be fair Luck does not hide his feral energy deep within his heart but you still like the contrast between his cute :D face and the way he causes bodily harm. His backstory spoke to you in some way.
Finral: Hm. I would say you relate to his struggles as the least favorite kid in the family, or feel like you can't keep up with your peers in general... but it's actually his dyed tips isn't it. Also you have to deal with people being like "but isn't he a pervert?!" like ALL the time even though he's trying to be better. My heart goes out to you.
Gauche: I don't know if you guys actually exist, but if you do, you probably have to deal with people being like "but doesn't he nosebleed over his sister?!" like ALL the time even though he also kills people for her. You wish he had more moments where he's cool and strong and not nosebleeding.
Charmy: You saw Charmy going around eating food to her heart's content and wearing a cute sweatshirt instead of participating in the stupid male gaze and said "oh, I respect that." You like the rare fictional women who participate in traditionally female roles like cooking but can also be terrifying on command.
Henry: Henry is your poor little meowmeow and you want to snuggle him and feed him soup. Like, I may be exaggerating, but am I wrong? You may also like how cool his magic is- I mean, rearranging buildings is a pretty slapping power- and that he can still play a role in fights without his disability magically being cured or handwaved away.
Zora: You want the heroes to destroy the system that thrives on classism and corruption, and are disappointed that Zora kind of stopped doing that. Sorry, bro, but this is a shounen, and 2/3rds of the Big Three ended with the corrupt system not being destroyed, so. I think you listen to songs about bringing down the Man and not wanting to be an American.
Secre: Let me guess, you watched Princess Tutu. Well, if you didn't, Secre fans, I suggest you do. You think you're emo and want to drown in those moody feelings because you like it or your crush turned out to be dating someone already. Do you make those artsy monochrome edits of anime characters with kpop idols because I always see Secre on there.
Vanessa: Look into my (metaphorical) eyes. Do you have a complicated relationship with your mother? Hm... I see... really?... ok... well, I'm glad we had this talk! Anyway I'm guessing you really, really like women. I think that should be our topic of conversation next time. Just make sure you look respectfully.
Gordon: You probably also have that problem where people can't hear you and they're like "SPEAK UP I CAN'T HEAR YOU" until you give up. I can relate. You... also... (mumble mumble mumble mumble mumble mumble mumble mumble. Mumble mumble mumble mumble).
Gray: You think shapeshifters are really cool and probably headcanon Gray as Not Cis in some way, which is extremely valid. You are proud of her for how she's starting to speak up and stand up for herself, although you might (like me) think she's way too good for Gauche. Sorry, Gauche fans. But she really is.
Yami: Quick! Close your eyes and visualize Yami! You didn't actually see Yami, did you. Only the wide expanse of his very defined abs. You either don't like Charlotte for being a homewrecker or you relate to her strongly. I don't think I've met even one Yami fan who hadn't been drawn to him for his tits you can crack walnuts in.
Nacht: If you went one anime generation back, you would be into Sasuke. I've never seen the show about Boruto's dad but I know this to be the case. They're both edgy, have dark powers, and have a tragic backstory involving their brothers. You want a significant other who's mean to everyone but you, but let's face it. Nacht will also be mean to you.
Morgen*: You want the illusion of the same thing, but you also actually want to be treated nicely instead of nitpicked for your flaws at all times. I know you have a fanfic of him not dying somewhere in your writing medium of choice. Come on, show it to us, don't be shy haha. Your fellow Morgen stans are withering away...
*I know he's a Grey Deer but I needed the joke to set up properly. Let me live

how do you think the islanders high school prom nights went?
oh nooooo! don’t make me suffer thinking about proms!
ok, um, let’s see.
((edit: it became a bible, as per usual...))
bobby. i can imagine cupcake being nervous to ask a girl to go with him to prom, rehearsing his “promposal” several times in the mirror, and joking about something related to proms that would light up the mood. i picture him with a really cute and shy girl that had her eye on him during chemistry class. and yes, i think he used the chemistry hook to ask her to be his date. he probably did weird worm dances, got the stage for ‘paisley cuddle’ for a three songs, was elected ‘class clown’ and got a good night kiss in front of her house when dropping her off, afterwards.
carl. i don’t want to sound too mean, but if carl went to his prom, he didn’t go with someone. he was too awkward and didn’t pick up the courage to invite the girl of his dreams. he had the corsage bought, but deep down he knew he couldn’t ask her. i must add here, he had a close friend that ended up spending the party with him because they were that connected. carl didn’t have fun, didn’t find the meaning of friendship and danced with his friend. he was too worried about uni applications and his future, and couldn’t wait to run for the hills. his entire high school experience sucked, and his prom wasn’t different. maybe one liberating song that set him free was gives you hell”, where he didn’t feel like holding back and really let all the weird alien moves out. after that, he left. for good. this is why i think when he tells the story to mc she’ll find a way to throw a prom just for him, with his friends from the villa, where he’ll be picked up in a limo and dance awkwardly, but freely, with true friends.
chelsea. this girl had fun on her prom, had a really cute guy taking her, the most gorgeous corsage she put together herself and gave it to her date the day before, so he could bring it when picking her up. chelsea had a close group of friends in school and danced the night away. if i know my bra well i think she was in charge of the decor, and you can bet your ass she talked her way into making everything pink-toned. all the blush and millennial pink you can imagine, down to the punch and the tablecloths. she organized everything related to the decor while bonding with a different person in charge of the rest. i can only imagine she had tons of fun at the night of the prom, being taken there in a pink limo. if her date didn’t do it, she would do it for herself, don’t at me!
gary. gary went to this prom, but i don’t reckon he took a girl. at that point of his life he was still “villain” looking, like he said, and i don’t think he had enough confidence to ask someone to go with him. what i do believe is that dicky was there with him, with a six pack and a playlist on his car that would be “infinitely better than whatever those fucking nerds are playing in there, mate!”. they would go in but not stay too long. i don’t think gary was a class clown or a sportist, despite of him playing football early on. he must’ve left that aside while focusing on robotics, so he was pretty much invisible. at least i think he defined himself in those terms. but they would drive somewhere gary adores, like the mountain, to watch the shipyard, have the beers, the music from the car radio and just talk and make fun of the popular kids that listen to ed sheeran. they would stay up all night, making plans for the future, since gary has his forklift license and is more than ready to start working. “cheers, mate.” besides the usual arctic monkeys, i think the song that best illustrates his prom is “mr. brightside” by ‘the killers’. “you know you’re gonna have to come back later for the car right, rennell?” “yeah...” “i’ll come with, you pussy. no need to be so sad.” dicky completed, pouting and draping an arm on gary’s shoulder as they walked home, ties untied, jackets and shirts open.
henrik. this kid couldn’t wait to wear those suspenders, beige pants and white shirt. he definitely had matching boutonniere with the corsage he got for his date, and his hair down. because whenever he hits the dancefloor, he lets his locks down and everyone knows that means the party is about to start. it wasn’t difficult for him to invite the girl he likes and she didn’t even blink before saying ‘yes’. i think he drove there, his friends on the back, singing along to "heroes” a cover by ‘the wallflowers’. i see henrik laughing while spinning a girl in place, catching her, goofing around with his friends while having the time of their lives. he already knew what he wanted to be, and everything was planned out. he drove everyone home and had his first night out with the girl he took to the prom.
kassam. i think kassam did his best to follow the protocol and asked a girl to go with him, got her a cute corsage and planned out the limo bit with his close friends. but i think it truly hit him that everything was going down when he put his jacket on, at the store. he saw himself on the mirror and realized what prom was, to him. it wasn’t just a party he would probably get laid after. i think he partied extremely hard that night, took some stuff, lost control, danced like an absolute asshole and probably ruined the night for a couple of people. it wasn’t smooth or tranquil like he thought it could be, and i really think he regrets lots of things he did that night. except for one. he decided to be the life of the party in different ways.
lottie. her “year 12 formal” was probably the first time lottie had real fun in her high school experience. like priya said before, i think lottie had some control issues and that stops her from seeing the full picture. ending your school experience usually opens your eyes for bigger things, and that’s where i think she really enjoyed herself for a long time. of course she wore a black dress and black and white corsage, if any. probably the first time she dyed her hair, not only a couple of streaks. high heels and black lipstick but just as gorgeous as she is today. maybe not the same level of confidence as today, but she was on the right path, i’m guessing.
lucas. i wanted to say lucas was the prom king, but that didn’t happen. he definitely didn’t know what to do while having a girl linking arms with him. he always felt like an outcast because of his previous experiences in school. always moving away, never staying too long to truly bond with his peers. so prom wasn’t exactly a fun time for him. it was though, the moment he realized he could do anything he wanted, not only conform to what his dad expected from him. the moment he realized that was possible the punch tasted different, the music became more fun, the dance moves weren’t so rehearsed and awkward, and he could truly appreciate what that night represented. i do think lucas wasn’t as smooth as he is today, so you can expect very boring tuxedo+shoes+tie combo, and not a lot of jazz going on with his ride. the whole point of getting a limo is to share it with your friends, but if you’re there for only a few months, then i don’t think there’s a bond strong enough to make you sing along to songs while picking up a girl. truth is, school wasn’t the best time for lucas, and just like carl, i don’t believe his prom was either.
marisol. she had to conform to a dress even though she wanted to rock a suit. at that point marisol already knew damn well who she was, but she couldn’t come out yet. i don’t think she had a very open relationship with her parents, and had to hide it for a while. what i do think though is that she took a girl, and changed into a suit at the dance. her closest friends knew about it and supported her, helping her hide her secret until the time was right. but that didn’t happen that night. she gave her date her corsage, and danced the night away with all of them. i even think her first sexual experience with a girl happened that night. awkwardly but very fully loving experience.
noah. i really think noah had a long term girlfriend by the time he graduated from high school, and she was the lucky girl he took to prom as his date. he asked her in the most traditional way, getting to her by the lockers, after class, possibly proceeding to take her to the library, finding the aisle with his and hers favorite books, then asking her there. the whole shebang of corsage and tuxedo, but no fancy limo bit or big gestures. just what he could afford. his dad took them to the dance and they entered the room being greeted by his closest friends. i do think noah was somewhat popular among the boys, because of his swimming, and the girls because he was so sweet and caring, besides hot! definitely popular enough to get some votes for prom king, but not quite there. i also believe the night of the prom could’ve been the first time he had sex. i could be wrong, but in my head, teen noah would’ve waited for a night as such, knowing what it means to him and to his girlfriend. not a lot of dancing but a lot of talking and watching as his crazier friends would let go and pull off moves no one should.
priya. it wasn’t the most fun she had in her life, that’s for sure. she mentioned a couple of times about her life in school and how hard it was to fit in. i don’t think big things happened for her back then. she tried her best to conform and become friends with people but it wasn’t in her, and eventually, those friendships would crumble. she probably had a date, a boy who asked her, and a couple of close friends, but didn’t feel like that was the fantasy prom she pictured for herself. i can see her wearing something discreet, because the priya we know and love blossomed later in life. besides, it was 2007/2008. emo phases were ending, but the alternative hairstyles were still here. if she had one of those or not, it’s up for debate. but her family doesn’t seem the kind to forbid her from having a haircut of her choice, so… you know what that means for her fashion choices back then! she did have a good time after a while at the dance, but it took her too long to realize it only depended on her. i think she danced, but didn’t really let the beast out. “not the greatest party i’ve been to, and definitely not my hottest look. but i guess no one’s prom is perfect.”

oc music meme!
tagged by @blitzindite - thank you, I love inflicting my music taste upon others 😉 Time to bring out the green boy as I listen to many songs and then go - hey, it’s him! Dangerous tagging me in a music meme as I have gone into an excessive amount of detail here.
Tagging @sentinelapologist @darth-bagel @a-muirehen @greyias if you would like to!
list one or more songs that relate to the following
reminds you of them most:
Bomb the Music Industry! - Sick, Later - I'm such a guarded guy 'cause I've been hurt too many times. Familiar?
Ezra Furman - No Place - could put this in the last category but putting it up here because it’s like his relationship with Coruscant? The city, the world he’s grown up in becoming a place that isn’t safe, it goes at a hundred miles an hour, needing to escape it all
Mott The Hoople - All The Young Dudes - musically and lyrically it has his essence, also I can’t do a music meme without throwing in some Bowie tbh
Los Campesinos! - As Lucerne/The Low - Ticcer being an emo and wallowing in his misery hah
reminds another character of them:
The Homeless Gospel Choir - Don’t Give Up - because certain people have probably felt he has needed to hear this, when he is wallowing
Slow Club - Number One - mostly thinking about Risha here but probably a few others would connect to it for him. Especially the final verse.
reminds you of a relationship of theirs, doesn’t have to be romantic, can be paternal, friendly, etc:
Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell - You’re All I Need To Get By - for his relationship with Risha, of course. One of the most beautiful love songs, and it also neatly matches up to one of the lines he says in the game to her, ‘you’re the only treasure I need’.
Mystery Jets - Lost in Austin - likewise for him and Risha, for the line Take me to the edge/I’m not scared/And if we fall off, it doesn’t matter/We’ll do it all again
Los Campesinos! - To Tundra - For his sister. The Genius page for the lyrics has the summary ‘another song about death from the band’. Obviously take away the more romantic interpretation of the song haha and fixate upon this lyric. Take a body to water, take a body to tundra/Just take me with you as well. This song captures grief so well, and Ticcer is defined by his grief in so many ways...Also this line hits as well in that spell when it was just the two of them, Ticcer looking after her and helping out a lot of the other kids We take on the burden of all these sad-eyed children/With lilies bunched in our hands. (Look I’ll stop now before I write an entire essay about how much I love this band but one last thing, live music is one of the biggest joys in my life and last time I saw them they played this and it was such a big emotional moment, and also the last gig I went to before lockdown. )
The Libertines - You’re My Waterloo - apparently I’m only putting songs in this part that make me cry. Could fit his relationship with Risha too but makes me think more about him and Slick, and the essence of that first love. (also this is an mlm romance song tbh, I will Not Accept the music video trying to make it something otherwise, and the original guitar demo will always mean a lot more to me than the piano version they eventually released)

Talking About the Future
Fandom: Diary of A Future President
Ship: Tennis Boyfriends (Bobby x Liam)
Word Count: 1097
Request: anonymous- I’m not sure why I felt obligated to ask this, but Tea-J-Kippen was talking about an idea with Bobby and Liam dancing at Elena’s quince or Sam and Gabi’s wedding, so maybe one day you could make that come true? I would honestly also love to see that happen. I don’t know, I felt like maybe if someone saw it that could be written at some point
Synopsis: Sam and Gabi’s wedding day has got Bobby thinking. Thinking about his future with Liam.
Author’s note: Tagging @tea-j-kippen as the inspiration for this fic. Also, this is supposed to be set a few years into the future where the boys have been together for awhile, I just that that would work better for the story.
DOAFP Taglist: @vi-the-best-you-can @miracufan @no-braincells-head-empty @shrub-of-t-leaves@abg-blah @ashisstrongerthanfire @tsunicos @disknee-riprider @emo-girl10 @proudgarbage @swingset-sunset@islamultifandom
This was a long time coming. Sam and Gabi have been together for years now. Sam’s finally going to be part of the family. Their relationship was always something to admire. They’ve been through so much together and now, they were going to vow to be with each other forever.
Bobby stood at Sam’s side, due to him being the best man, and Camila and Elena were next to his mother, being co-maids of honor. The officiant was speaking and Bobby kind of spaced out, knowing the important things like vows and stuff wouldn’t come around for a while. His eyes wandered the crowd, seeing both friends and family from his side and Sam’s. His eyes locked onto Liam, who seemed to be listening to the preacher. He took this time to admire his boyfriend. Liam looked dashing in his suit, the color bringing out his eyes.
Liam must’ve felt someone’s eyes on him because soon enough his eyes met Bobby’s. Bobby gave a small wave, and Liam gave a silent chuckle, returning the gesture. Then he gestured towards the talking preacher, silently telling Bobby that he should be paying attention. Bobby slightly nodded and turned his head back to the soon-to-be-married couple and the reverend. And it seemed like he tuned in just in time to hear the vows.
He listened as Sam started speaking.
“Gabi, the second I first saw you, I knew there was something about you. You made me feel things that I never even imagined I could feel.”
Bobby’s thoughts immediately went to Liam and the moment he first met him, which seemed so long ago now. He remembered thinking he was interesting and kind of cool, but he didn’t realize then that those were just little seeds of a crush that managed to bloom into complete adoration over time.
“Sam, I never thought I would ever find true love again. But then you came into my life and took me by surprise. I know we’ve had our ups and downs, we’ve both done and said things we’ve regretted. But I wouldn’t change those experiences for anything because they’ve led us here today.”
Bobby glanced over at Liam, they’ve certainly had their ups and downs. His thoughts went back to the dance back in eighth grade. And that’s only when they were friends, don’t even get him started on arguments they’ve had as a couple. But he wouldn’t change any of those bad moments, especially the dance. Because without that night, they probably wouldn’t be in a full-fledged relationship today. He wouldn’t trade those moments for anything.
“I now pronounce you, husband and wife. You may kiss the bride.”
Bobby got brought back to earth at the clapping that came when his mom and his new stepdad kissed. He applauded as well, eyes drifting between his parents and Liam. His eyes lingered on Liam longer than he’d like to admit.
The reception was in full swing, people were laughing, telling playing wedding games, and Elena put her public speaking skills to use when giving her speech, making nearly everyone cry. Bobby looked around the room, trying to spot his date. He navigated his way through the dance floor, eventually finding Liam surrounded by his relatives. He tried hurrying over to save his boyfriend from the swarm of aunts and cousins, and he did eventually get there but he couldn’t get there before the questions started.
“Oh Bobby, you never told us your boyfriend was such a handsome young man!”
Bobby nervously laughed. “Ha, yeah, sorry.”
“Aww, look at you two together! You guys look so good together!”
Bobby laughed again and subtly grabbed Liam’s hand, trying to guide him away from his family.
“I’m sure you two will be walking down that aisle in no time!”
Both boys’ eyes widened, and Bobby tried even harder to get away.
“Ha, ha, y-yeah, sure, whatever you say, later!”
That’s when he fully turned around and walked away from the group, boyfriend in tow. Bobby’s cheeks must’ve been as red as a firetruck at this point. He stopped at one of the tables and took a seat, trying to compose himself. He rested his elbows on the table, covering his face with his hands. He heard Liam sit next to him, laughing a bit at what just happened.
“Well that was fun.”
“If you define the word ‘fun’ as ‘fatally embarrassing’ then sure, yeah, that was fun.”
Liam laughed again, the sound making Bobby feel slightly better. Bobby lifted his head and laughed a little as well. Their laughter eventually died down and they just looked at each other, admiring each other’s soft smiles.
The only reason Bobby looked away was when the upbeat song changed to a softer, slower one. He saw his parents swaying together, and he felt joy seeing them look so content in each other’s arms. His focus shifted from them to Liam once he stood from his seat. Bobby looked at him curiously, but he knew Liam’s intentions when he stuck his hand out towards him.
Even after all this time, Bobby still got flustered whenever Liam and he did couple-y things. And slow dancing together was no exception. He nervously took Liam’s hand and let him lead him to the dance floor. When they got there, Bobby struggled on where to put his hands, which happened at every single dance they’ve been to together. But eventually, he settled on putting his hands on Liam’s shoulders while Liam put his on his waist.
They swayed for a little bit, and Bobby desperately wanted to talk about what he’s been thinking about all day. But they’ve never talked about it before, so he didn’t know how to bring it up. Ultimately, he decided to just talk about it.
“You ever think about this…stuff?”
“What kind of stuff?”
“You know the…marriage stuff.”
“Ah,” Liam nodded “Well, sure. I think it will happen at some point.”
Bobby’s gaze turned to one of anxiousness to one of hopefulness.
“Really?”
Liam nodded again. “Yeah, don’t you?”
“Yeah, it’s just, we’ve never really talked about that kind of stuff before.”
Liam shrugged slightly. “So? There’s no rush. We haven’t even graduated high school yet.”
“I know, but, the future comes so fast you know.”
“Well, then it’s a good thing we’re talking about it now.”
Bobby smiled at Liam, still swaying the night away. He pressed himself a little closer to Liam, happy to be able to finally talk about this stuff.
“So…indoor or outdoor wedding?”
“Yeah, let’s not rush too much.”
“Right.”

Emo and Proud (Shinsou Hitoshi X Reader)
Summary: You decide to give Shinsou some music therapy by encouraging him to sing along with you to vent out your stress and some deeper feelings are revealed.
Hehe one of my headcanons is that Shinsou is a big-time MCR fan, in a way like Misty Day is a fan of Stevie Nicks from American Horror Story :3
BTW SORRY FOR ANY OOC-NESS!!
Featuring: Our Favorite Purple Boy!
You sighed as you finished watching Aggretsuko for the 10th time on your phone.
It was such a cute show even with it’s 15 minute episode runtime. That poor little adorable red panda; you wondered if you would ever end up like that someday since you were going to be a pro-hero someday, and it wasn’t exactly a glamorous job for everyone.
If there’s one thing that show taught you, it’s that music is one of the most life-saving outlets to vent out your emotions. And boy was that true, because your music was pretty much one of your sanctuaries that let you feel and express yourself whenever you sang to yourself or just let all your old nostalgia come back to you in the comfort of your room.
But it was time to pull an Aggretsuko and use the power of music to relieve the stress you had been feeling after the Joint Training and training in general. You knew being a hero would be hard work, but damn, your teacher was starting to look more like a slave-driver at this point.
Thankfully, somehow everyone had managed to catch a break since nothing was really going on… yet at least. And to salvage this break, you secluded yourself from your friends, as much as you loved them, sometimes you needed some alone time.
So, you politely declined their invite to the arcade and stood behind in the dorms. Once you were sure that most of them were gone, you set up a TV you had brought since you couldn’t live without a large-enough television and for the movie nights for weekends.
You hooked it up to your phone and grabbed a brush to act as a makeshift microphone from your room and played up an old nostalgic song from the singer who rose up yet again. It’s a good thing nobody was here, because you were really rocking out and banging your head with the guitar solo. Not that you would have cared, but you didn’t care for some of the remarks you would get, especially from that jackass Bakugou or that snarky chick Jirou.
“Try to tell me what I shouldn’t do.You should know by now, I won’t listen to you. Walk around with my hands up in the air, ‘cause I don’t care… ‘Cause I’m alright, I’m fine! Just freak out let it go!”
Dancing a little bit and raising your fist, you sang as loud as you could and really let yourself cut loose, so much that you were oblivious to someone entering the room who had taken the time to pause and stare at you as you danced.
“I’m gonna live my life, I can’t ever run and hide I won’t compromise ‘cause I’ll never know. I’m gonna close my eyes, I can’t watch the time go by. I won’t keep it inside! Freak out let it go! Just freak out let it go!”
You were flailing your arms about, flipping your (H/L) hair as much as you could, shaking your butt as you pumped your fists to get back in tune with your inner Avril. The music was so loud you couldn’t hear the very quiet snickers coming from your audience.
“Gonna freak out let it go! Gonna freak out let it go!”
Banging your head as the final riff ended you threw your arms up vigorously, “WHOO!” You shouted, turning around with a big grin that dramatically and comically fell as soon as you saw the person you had no idea had been watching you just about the whole time…
“OH GOD! H-Hitoshi!!”
Wild purple hair and all, beautiful, tired purple eyes gleaming with such amusement as his lips were lined with a smirk. He slowly brought his hands up to give you a deliberately slow clap.
“Impressive…” Shinsou finally spoke up, his tone sounding casual and low-key as possible but you knew that this was clearly extremely amusing to him as your face involuntarily grew hot.
“How much of that did you hear… and see…?” You shouldn’t have asked that, but you were curious.
“Everything from ‘Try to tell me what I shouldn’t do’.” He answered you and you sighed a bit, shrugging your shoulders with your hands up in defeat.
“I didn’t think anyone else would be here… sometimes you just need time to yourself ya know?” Sighing, you almost felt embarrassed. Shinsou wasn’t even in your class at the beginning and yet you befriended him during the Sports Festival a LOT quicker than you did your own classmates. It all started when you asked for him to be on your team, which shocked the hell out of him since he didn’t even have to brainwash you like he did Ojiro and Aoyama. And from then, you two just clicked and stood in touch.
“I know. That’s why I didn’t go with the rest of the others.” He agreed with your sentiment, which made you actually kind of happy.
Shinsou was a complete introvert, and yet you managed to get through to him due to similar interests in music, especially when you discussed how the two of you were ‘permanently stuck in your emo phases’. And then you knew about his fondness for cats, which you found extremely adorable since you had a soft spot for cats yourself.
Finally, there was your quirks, and you knew all about the prejudice he got from people simply because his Brainwashing quirk gave him the ability to control people. You had gotten somewhat similar flak for your quirk since your quirk also allowed you to control people, except you had control over their bodies and not their minds.
Emo birds of a feather gloomed and listened to MCR together.
The more you two talked, the closer you became. Which is why you were overjoyed when he started training with Aizawa and finally got into the Hero Course with you and your friends.
But the problem was… now that you were closer to him, you had fallen almost hopelessly in love with him. And now you just embarrassed yourself in front of him even though the plan was to have some time for yourself. However, because you liked Shinsou so much, it was always okay for him to be around you; you could relate to him and you never wanted him to feel like he couldn’t be around you.
“Well hey. We can be alone together… you’re one of the very few people who don’t annoy me. And EVERYONE annoys me.” You smiled at him, and he couldn’t help but smile back at you.
“I can say the exact same thing about you.” Shinsou said as he took a seat on the couch, sighing heavily as you frowned a bit and went over to him. He’d been working extra hard since Aizawa took him under his wing, you were sure that he must have been exhausted.
“Dude you need to relax…” You said, setting your brush down and placing your hands on his shoulders that made him freeze ever so slightly from the unexpected touch. But he wouldn’t ever make himself appear flustered in front of you so he kept his cool.
“It’s not easy to relax when you’re constantly working… even on break-days like these…” He muttered a bit as you started to massage his shoulders a bit.
“Yeah but you can still try! You work too hard man… Aizawa’s really been kicking your ass ever since he took you up… I mean yeah it’s awesome that you’re with us now but you need a goddamn break dude…” You said gently despite your language, digging into his shoulder blades as he grunted a bit but then sighed quietly in content with how good your fingers felt on his sore muscles. Muscles he’d been growing ever since he started training that is…
“I might just sleep or something… that’s a smart way to take a break.” He said, but you immediately shut that idea down.
“Ugh, you’re training WITH Aizawa, not training to BE Aizawa, Hitoshi. Sleeping is great, but you know what else is great? Singing~.” You sang that to get your point across but that just served to irk the purple-haired boy even as he let out a small groan when you got another sore spot that helped him ease up a little bit.
He sighed again, “I don’t sing… I’m probably not even good at it…”
“I’m not good at it but I still do it! You ain’t gotta be good at singing to do it, it’s just fun! Plus you get to vent out everything in the lyrics of awesome songs! Avril Lavigne, Evanescence, Good Charlotte, Three Days Grace, Simple Plan, My Chemical Romance!” You exclaimed and listed out some of the many singers that you enjoyed during your emo phase and STILL enjoyed.
Shinsou didn’t flinch, but hearing those names nearly made him perk up since he DID like all of those groups and singers. Especially My Chemical Romance…
“I mean those guys defined our childhood and shaped up the emo phase that we grew up with and loved because we just didn’t give a fuck about anything and just sang the loser anthems that spoke of our existences at the time… It was a time to be alive because it allowed us to say ‘I am emo and I am proud’.” You somewhat dramatically explained and Shinsou gave you a look when you stopped massaging his shoulders and started talking nonsense.
“It’s who we are Hitoshi! We have all these feelings that we need to vent out! And remind people of the times we grew up in! Say it with me! I am emo and I am proud!” You threw your fist in the air, and naturally Shinsou didn’t follow you as he just stared at you.
”Did you watch Aggretsuko again?” He knew you loved singing, but he had a feeling that one of your favorite modern cartoons had something to do with this little idea of ours.
“Yes… yes I have…” You replied to him rather nonchalantly.
“You watch way too much cartoons…” He shook his head, trying his hardest to not smile or snicker at how stupid you sounded.
“Cartoons also defined my childhood because sometimes you needed a break from your emo phase bro… but my point is… just try it. I sang my heart out to Avril and I already feel a ton better! Aggretsuko teaches that and it’s an excellent lesson!’” You threw your hands up cheerfully, but Shinsou just stared at you with his deadpan look.
“Okay, you must have me confused with someone who does embarrassing things without a care in the world.” He snarked, trying to not show that this kinda thing made him feel a little… nervous. Especially with you here. He wasn’t ready to embarrass himself in front of you, not after you had to watch him lose to Midoriya in the Sports Fest.
And he nearly jumped when you suddenly put your arm around him. “Tosh… it’s ME. You know I’d never judge you. I mean you don’t have to… but I’m sure you’d be awesome at it… you’ve sung a few of your emo phase songs to yourself with the door closed whenever you got in one of those ‘fuck the world’ moods haven’t you?” You softly reassured him, giving him a choice even as you asked him a question.
Shinsou willed himself to not blush with how close you were and how you touched him like that, instead focusing on your words as he looked somewhat defeated. “Yes…”
He gave a heavy sigh. As much as he didn’t entirely want to, he couldn’t say no to you, especially when you were trying to just help him relax. Shinsou would only EVER sing for you.
“Okay… I’ll do one. But you’re not allowed to laugh.” Shinsou finally and reluctantly complied and you practically screamed from joy.
“YES!!! Let’s get out Emo on!” You hugged him suddenly , doing a bit of a dance when you finally got your wallflower friend to try this out with you.
So you gladly grabbed your phone to start looking up a selection of songs, as Shinsou sighed again, unable to believe that he was actually doing this. Well, he trusted you, and generally had fun whenever he did things with you. And although you were more energetic than he was at times, he didn’t mind. He enjoyed that you had more zest than he did.
“All right! Here’s one! Take it Toshi!” You suddenly tossed him your hairbrush, and he quickly caught it, giving you a look afterward.
“(Y/N)…” Shinsou was beginning to feel a bit of nerves even though he shouldn’t have, but it got worse when he saw the song you chose.
This was one of his FAVORITE songs.
“No I can’t… I can’t do Gerard any justice…” He muttered a bit self-consciously, but you just shook your head.
“Yes you can! No one’s a bigger fan of Gerard than you are! Now go on! I’m with ya Toshi!” You smiled wide at him to ease him up, and you took the floor when the song immediately started up
“Long ago, just like the hearse, you die to get in again… we are so far from you…”
Deliberately, you whispered that last part to imitate how the song went, and looked right at Shinsou to cue him to go next. He appeared unsure for a bit, until he took a quick breath.
“Burning on, just like a match you strike to incinerate… the lives of everyone you know! And what’s the worst you take from every heart you break… And like a blade you stain, well, I’ve been holding on tonight…!”
You nearly jumped as soon as THAT voice came out of Shinsou’s mouth. So much energy and passion as he became MUCH more expressive as he sang the song. His singing voice a lot louder and emotional than his speaking one, and yet there was something haunting and tortured about his voice too. It was beautiful…
However, Shinsou suddenly became more adorable in your eyes as he clutched the hairbrush close to him as he sung and and waved his arm about, as if to follow the way Gerard moved and sung in the music video.
As he sung, at that moment he remembered that you were here as soon as he saw your wide (E/C) eyes and agape mouth. You saw his cheeks beginning to redden as he nearly halted in the verse but you shook your head vigorously, wanting to encourage him to keep going!
“What’s the worst that I could say?”
“Things are better if I stay! So long and goodnight, So long and goodnight~!“
You jumped in, singing the first part before bringing your hairbrush over to Shinsou, and he gladly sang the rest along with you. Although you had to whoop when Shinsou got into it, running a hand through his wild hair and following Gerard’s every move from the video.
Crazy, passionate expression and everything and making the same hand gestures and you couldn’t help but dance just as wild as the dancers did and some air guitar, following Shinsou’s rhythm.
“Came a time when every star fall brought you to tears again… we are the very hurt you sold. And what’s the worst you take from every heart you break… And like a blade you stain, well, I’ve been holding on tonight…!”
“What’s the worst that I could say? Things are better if I stay! So long and goodnight, So long and goodnight~! Well, if you carry on this way, things are better if I stay… So long and goodnight, So long and goodnight…!”
Encouraged, by your enthusiasm, Shinsou got on his knees as he sung the chorus with the loudest voice you had ever heard from him. Although he stood back up a little dramatically when the last bridge came.
He took your hand gently, pulling you in closer as he continued to sing, in a softer, almost whispery voice.
“Can you hear me…?”
“Are you near me…?”
Shinsou looked you right in the eyes, purple eyes luring your (E/C) eyes in an almost intimate moment as your cheeks flushed pink. It felt like this was just for you, and Shinsou made sure of it as he gently pressed his forehead against yours. Silently telling you that this was for you, and that only you could see him bear his soul like this.
You quietly gasped, for a moment you nearly felt like you were in his control because of how his voice just captivated you. But feeling extremely relaxed and yet fluttery with joy as you giggled a bit. When he pulled away, you saw his own face become bashfully flushed as you grinned when he started to sing again.
“Can we pretend to leave and then…”
“We’ll meet again, when both our cars collide!”
While Shinsou sung, you followed his lead, widening your eyes dramatically and pretending to fall backwards like the girl in the video as the chorus came.
“What’s the worst that I could say? Things are better if I stay! So long and goodnight, So long and goodnight~! Well, if you carry on this way, things are better if I stay…So long and goodnight, So long and goodnight…!”
Feeling more invigorated than ever before, Shinsou sang the chorus a little louder, yet still on-key as put his hand over his heart and bore the rest of his soul out.
And when he finished the song, he promptly dropped your hairbrush and you threw both your hands up in the air. “WHOOOO!! That’s my Toshi!” You practically screamed, almost like a fangirl as you quickly threw yourself into him, hugging him tightly and jumping a little bit as Shinsou’s eyes grew slightly wide and he felt his face heating up a bit. He was confident during the song, but now his bashfulness came back.
“That was AWESOME! I didn’t even know you could sing!”
Shinsou really hated his pale skin sometimes, because now he couldn’t hide how much he was blushing from all of your praise.
“I don’t do it much… just in private… I don’t think I’m that good…” He normally wasn’t timid, but you were complimenting him so much and he wasn’t used to that kind of praise. He liked it a lot though, it just made him feel kind of nervous, and yet validated.
“Well you freakin’ ROCKED dude! You totally did Gerard justice!” You continued the compliments, adoring just how red Shinsou was turning as he rubbed the back of his neck and coyly grinned.
“You’re just saying that…” He mumbled a little bit, and for once he flinched when he felt lips pecking his already hot cheek as you giggled and blushed, shaking your head.
“Nope! I mean it… and… I mean it when I say this but… Hitoshi… I think… no… I know… I uh… I like you… not even that… I like-like you…” There you said it, you finally admitted your feelings for the guy. You were a little unsure, but that song and seeing him unleash the soul you fell in love with just brought out the rest of your feelings for him.
Shinsou was taken by surprise. Nothing fazed him that much, but for once he was taken aback, his purple eyes wide and his expression that one of surprise and disbelief. He’s NEVER had this happen to him before. No one’s ever like-liked him before.
“W-What?” He didn’t mean to stutter, but he couldn’t really help it.
“Hee-hee… I’m in love with you…” Giggling shyly, your cheeks began to darken, “Don’t make me say it again, my heart’s like, beating out of my chest…” You shyly said, and although Shinsou was still blushing, he started to smirk a little bit when he saw just how flushed you were. He knew you weren’t lying, but he was still amazed that SOMEONE actually like-liked him. And yet he was also overjoyed that someone he felt close to and actually liked, like-liked him. And if he was being honest, he like-liked you too.
“Well... I actually like-like you too... you’re the only person I think I completely trust.” He admitted, still giving you his little smile. Shinsou wasn’t lying, he’d never show anyone what a dork he could be, except for you. Because you were just as big an emo dork as he was. You were his dork, and he was your dork.
Your eyes went huge and you blushed heavily when he... reciprocated your feelings?! Was this for real? It had to be. Shinsou never lied to you, he layed jokes on you sometimes, but this wasn’t one of them...
“For real...?”
“Yes. You’re a complete dork. But... you’re my dork.” Shinsou finally admitted, it wouldn’t be a common thing, but he had to get that across to you just so you wouldn’t faint from how red you were. And he almost jumped when you screamed and hugged him again, very much like a fangirl almost.
“AHHHH! You know it! And you’re MY dork too!” You happily exclaimed, hugging him tightly as Shinsou sighed a little bit, but found it in him to hug you back with a little smile.
He’d never say it to anyone, but he loved his dork.
~~~Bonus Ending~~~
"We are not alone..." You suddenly perked up where you hugged Shinsou, and he sensed that too. Somebody else was around, and probably eavesdropping on the two of you. "I think I know who." He said lowly, albeit he wasn't entirely bothered; he wasn't happy, but he wasn't bothered either since this person was your friend.
"Ohhhh..." Giggling, you figured out who it was based on that alone. "Hey! Tokoyami! Come out dude I know you're hiding back there." You blatantly called him out, but of course Tokoyami himself didn't reply from the corner.
"No we're not!" Dark Shadow replied for him, and you could hear Tokoyami's annoyed, deep sigh.
"My apologies. It wasn't my intention to eavesdrop..." The crow-headed boy slowly came out of hiding as you waved to him, while Shinsou looked mildly annoyed, having assumed that you were his only audience.
"Oh really? Heh... let me guess... did you hear the song?" You raised a brow, as much as you could at least and Tokoyami looked downwards, almost as if he were a little embarrassed even though you knew he had the same tastes in music you and Shinsou did.
"Yes... I did. It was very impressive. Like Gerard Way was reawakened from his slumber." He somewhat dramatically said as you smiled wide and giggled, patting Shinsou on the back happily. "I know right?! See Tosh! You're AWESOME! And Tokoyami here is one of us! Let's let him hang with us!" You cheerfully suggested, which just annoyed Shinsou even more. However, Tokoyami was pretty harmless and didn't seem to have a thing for you. Even if he did, it was too late because you were his now.
"Okay. I don't see the harm." Shinsou shrugged his shoulders as you happily clapped your hands. "Ahaha! Tokoyami! Hope ya don't mind singing!" That made the similarly emo boy perk up ever so slightly. He didn't plan on singing...
"I'm not a singer." Tokoyami quickly replied. Much like Shinsou, he wasn't entirely willing to show off because he doubted his abilities, but you weren't going to let him feel so insecure as you started the next song.
"You will be!" You smirked, winking at Shinsou as you immediately started to sing the first lyrics. A song you knew no true emo like Tokoyami could ever resist.
"Oh, well imagine, as I'm pacing the pews in a church corridor and I can't help but to hear. No, I can't help but to hear an exchanging of words~."
You got into it and picked your head up as soon as you sang the first part, running a hand through hair as you sang in your hairbrush, not so subtly flirting with Shinsou as he couldn't help but smirk as you gave him your brush to let him take the next part.
"What a beautiful wedding! What a beautiful wedding, says a bridesmaid to a waiter, and, yes, but what a shame, what a shame the poor groom's bride is a whore."
Shinsou gladly sung, which surprised you a little bit because he was more comfortable when it was only you. And he was, but he knew that you and Tokoyami were just friends, even if the guy liked you it was too late. You were all his now. Still, he would let the fellow emo join in since he was very like-minded and wouldn't judge you both. However, you both just made him feel a little nervous, it didn't help when you gave him the hairbrush...
But Tokoyami knew this song by heart. Every lyric, every rhythm...
He couldn't help it.
"I chime in with a 'Haven't you people ever heard of closing the goddamn door?' No, it's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of poise and rationality!”
Now you and Shinsou were shocked, both of your eyes growing wide when the ever-so-stoic, dark prince-y bird boy Tokoyami, of ALL people, actually singing with an almost uncharacteristic enthusiasm as he held onto the hairbrush you gave him and sung into it.
But you couldn't help but smile wide, glancing at Shinsou as he shrugged with a small smile. The bird was shocking pretty good too. Might as well join in.
"I chime in with a 'Haven't you people ever heard of closing the goddamn door?!' No, it's much better to face these kinds of things with a sense of... poise and rationality! Again..."
Following Tokoyami's lead, you and Shinsou acted as his back-up singers by singing the chorus with him and you provided the crazy dances as the three of you vigorously rocked out.
Emo and proud.
~~~Extra Bonus Ending~~~
Meanwhile downstairs...
"Man it sounds like they're having fun up there..." Kirishima and the rest of the 'Bakusquad' had returned to Heights Alliance early, and you had pretty much put your music on full blast once you hooked it up to the TV. And didn't count on anyone coming back so quick...
"I kinda wanna go up and join em!" Kaminari was getting into the music he was hearing through the walls. "YEAH! Let's go and party with those guys!" Mina would never say no to cutting lose and dancing to awesome music.
"I'm sure (Y/N) will let us. Most of us..." Sero shrugged his shoulders with his casual smile, having known you fairly well but he wasn't so sure you would let ALL of them hang out since you and Bakugou never really entirely got along.
"Amateurs..." Bakugou muttered under his breath as he marched upstairs to go to the floor you were occupying. You were being WAY too damn loud, but at that moment he decided he'd show you how a REAL singer sings My Chemical Romance.

Trace Cyrus confirms Metro Station reunion, new music in 2020
When Metro Station first started, they created a neon-emo music phenomena, gaining massive mainstream attention with their track “Shake It.” The infectious dance anthem made its debut on our iPod shuffle playlists in 2007, and we almost guarantee it’s still a song you revisit.
But Metro Station were more than studded belts, straightened bangs and skinny jeans. Since the band’s official breakup announcement in August 2017 and their final album, “Shake It” has remained a scene staple and a go-to sing-along at every Emo Night.

Metro Station are certainly ready to shake things up again. AltPress exclusively chatted with Trace Cyrus on what’s next for the pair and why 2020 is the time for the band to reunite.
Metro Station have really been stirring some stuff up in the scene in the last couple of weeks.
TRACE CYRUS: Yeah, we randomly just got back together [and] started working on the music. That’s the reason I’m in Los Angeles now. I came to work with Mason [Musso] and just restart this Metro Station thing. I think a few years ago, I just got so burnt out on the touring side of music that I just wanted some time off and to get my personal life together. And now it’s just things like TikTok and Spotify and all these new things that didn’t exist before have made “Shake It” and Metro Station take off in a whole new way that we thought would never happen. It’s really, really cool, and it just inspired us to want to get back together and make new songs. Yeah, it’s nothing that we really planned. I just called up Mason one day and told him, “Let’s get the studio,” and now we’re working on it.
It’s no secret that everybody who’s in the music community knows and loves “Shake It.” It was wild because we’ve been noticing a lot of artists are returning or getting back together lately.
You know, I saw a couple of comments of people using that comparison. But we’re not getting back together because we’re seeing other bands trying it like that. We’ve just been inspired by the streams and how much love Metro Station are still getting after all this time. Like, I think “Shake It” got 26 million streams just on Spotify this past year.
youtube
That’s insane. You haven’t toured or released new music in over two years.
No, we have not at all. And we haven’t been promoting it in any way. Like, never pushing Spotify or any of these new apps that came out. It’s just our fanbase is still out there somewhere, and they’re searching for us. So we just want to give them what they want.
Do you think things such as Emo Night continuing to play “Shake It” is helping to keep scene music alive?
I think so. I think that Metro Station got to a point where things like “Shake It” became so popular for us that it almost became uncool that we were the guys that sang “Shake It,” because it became so mainstream. And then enough time has passed that this new generation of SoundCloud rappers have made emo cool again. It’s something that I thought was going to be made fun of forever for being this little emo scene kid and the younger generation has completely come back around and made what I was doing years ago completely relevant and cool again. And they all have respect for me for what I was doing back in 2007, 2008, 2009, because I was ahead of the curve then. So it’s just really cool.

Have you ever had any new emo rappers or other artists hit you up to sample any Metro Station tracks?
We’re in the talks, [but] I don’t want to put any names out. We’re in talks [about doing] a rap feature right now for our first single. But I don’t want to say. But I think it’s gonna get people excited.
That’s super exciting to hear. So obviously, Metro Station are getting back together.
Actually, Mason just left. We were in the studio here in Calabasas, and we just finished our third song back together in the past week. So it’s been going really good.
When are you anticipating to start releasing new music?
The goal is for me to come back here after I get to spend the holidays with my family and then shoot our first music video and just put a single out to the world. Most likely be like, “Here’s our first song and video and then album on the way.”
That’s incredible.
It’s awesome because the chemistry me and Mason have in the studio has just always been there from the first day we met. You know, we went in the studio and made a song together when we were 17 years old. And I hadn’t seen or spoke to Mason in over two years. And I just came up to L.A. and, you know, within a few hours we had made a whole new song that we are so excited about that we feel I can make another stamp on the music industry. So when you have a chemistry like that with someone, it’s just awesome. When you get back in a room and you realize nothing changes.

That’s awesome. What sound are you going after? Is it going to be what we know from Metro Station, or is it going to be completely new and adapted?
No, we’re trying to go back to our roots. It’s definitely that more upbeat dance vibe. With the last stuff we did when we got back together a few years ago, I feel like we were trying to experiment and do different things. We did a full acoustic project and just different things we typically wouldn’t do. I think we’re to the point where we just want to give the fans exactly what they want to get. It’s not about making songs that we want to hear or we like. I think as artists, we start to do that a lot of times [and] our opinion starts to mean more than what the fanbase or the rest of the world’s opinion is. And right now, we just want to give people what they want and really have those top 40 upbeat dance tracks that, you know, you can rock out to.
I did a little digging on your personal Instagram, and I noticed that over the last six months, you’ve been sharing old photos and talking about old tours and Myspace. Are you planning on changing your look to match that aesthetic?
No, those pictures are just fun to look back [on]. It’s funny, though, because my mom genuinely wants me to grow my hair back out like that, but she’s an ’80s rocker chick, you know? She still wishes that Mötley Crüe and Guns N’ Roses was around. What I did then, it was kind of my own twist on that because that was a lot of stuff I was inspired by growing up. Like, that’s what I feel like the scene kids were. We were taking a version of what was done in the ’80s and adding our own twist to it with a lot more tattoos and a little more crazy piercing stuff.
So yeah, that’s just that’s a part of my past, and I’m blonde now. My hair is short. I’m a completely different person. Like, it’s just funny to go back and post those pictures and look at it because shockingly, it was one of the most successful times of my career. But it’s something that I can’t help but look at and laugh, you know? It was me experimenting and finding myself as a man and getting to know myself. But somehow it just worked at that time in the place in the music industry. It was a fun time, though.

It is fun to look back on it. It’s interesting. Metro Station were a massive band who were revolutionizing the emo scene style.
We were just young. You know, we wrote the first record when we were 17 years old. The album came out very shortly after that as soon as we turned 18. And I just think that people, they were also in their awkward phase and learning to be who they were, and they got to grow with us. And it was cool. We came out at a time where most of the bands I was touring with, I was younger than everybody. So I think that we just came out at such a young age, [so] we really connected to the young teenage generation. It was a really good time. And I think it was just cool, too, because it was so different from what anyone in my family was doing and what anyone would have really expected me to do. And I think that shock value of me being a Cyrus and being related to Miley and things like that, I think it surprised people. It really did. And I think just everything together just worked. I don’t know how it did, but it did. Like, I still look at the plaques on my wall of Metro Station and what we did, and it blows my mind at times because we didn’t have a game plan. We didn’t go to my parents for help asking what to do when it came to getting a manager or a record label. We just made songs, put them on Myspace, and because of Myspace, it changed the rest of our lives forever.
Yeah, absolutely. Without Myspace, do you think you’re gonna be able to reach your fanbase in the same way?
I don’t know. I think the blessing and curse about a song like “Shake It” is you always want to do better than that and beating that song or getting more plays or more sales or whatever it is. It’s something that we might not ever do again. And it’s something that I realized I need to stop obsessing over and [something] I’ve already left my mark with. I’m just trying to not obsess as much about always trying to do better than I did at that point in my life and realize that I might never have a hit that big, and that doesn’t matter, you know? I just want to make music, and the true fans that stick around and want to hear it—that’s great. And I truly believe that I can perform and play concerts for the rest of my life, even off the music I’ve already done.

You said you’ve recorded a couple of songs together. When are you anticipating the first single to be released, and can you tell us anything about it? The title or what it sounds like?
I really don’t want to give it away. I think that this song that we just wrote is going to hit it home so perfectly with everything that’s going on in pop culture right now and what’s going on with the younger artists and stuff. And I think this song we’re about to do is really about to open a lot of ears and get a lot of people’s attention. That’s all I’m gonna say.
Fair enough. I know we’re all really excited to hear it.
We’re really excited. Like I said, the first song Mason and I did, as soon as he left and I got the mix, I played it hundreds of times, and I just got that feeling that I would get with old Metro Station songs and just them being so infectious, so you have to keep it and replay, replay, replay.

How have your family and friends reacted to the new music?
I honestly haven’t played anybody anything. I’ve been in L.A. the past week, locked up in the studio, and other than some of our business people we work with, I haven’t played the music for any family or friends yet.
It’s kind of nice because you have a little secret, and it’s all yours right now with Mason.
Yeah, it’s cool. I feel like me and him are at a really good place. Unfortunately, we’re both 30 years old now, which sounds crazy, but wisdom truly does come with age. And when we get back together, we talk about the old days when we were 17, 18, 19 and just the drinking, the drugs, the party life…Our keyboardist Blake [Healy] was older than us at the time. He was like 25. And we met him, and we were like 17. And we were just saying yesterday, like, “If [only] we would have listened to him…” Because he was logical. He had his head on straight, and we were young, we were wild and we didn’t care about anything but having a good time. And, you know, once you grow up, you realize [things] about safety, money, and priorities. You realize being a rock star [and] being on top of the world doesn’t always last forever.

Dating Chanyeol had its perks, but also its cons. Perks included getting exclusive first listens to the songs the band was working on, going to all his gigs for free, and of course, wearing his greatly oversized clothing every chance you got. It also didn’t hurt that he lived right next door, something you never knew how to appreciate until you began falling for him. The cons stemmed from the same places as the pros - you hardly got to see him because he was constantly practicing, and you’d be studying. After that big gig they had last November, White Noise’s popularity boosted, and the band was doing small tours in neighbouring cities, and while you couldn’t be more proud of them, having seen them start from the bottom, you couldn’t help but be disheartened about the timing. You and Chanyeol had barely gotten together and he was off touring with his best friends and you missed him dearly.
All of it was worth it, though, for Chanyeol was head over heels for you, just as you were for him. Every time you saw him, a smile would immediately form on your lips and your stomach would fill with butterflies, causing your heart to flutter and go all soft. How on earth could you have hated him for years when he was literally the cutest and softest giant on earth?
Every chance you could, you would be in his presence, whether it be in his garage with him teaching you how to play the guitar, or him lying on your bed as you both studied for an upcoming test, only being interrupted by the surprise kisses he would give you whenever he got bored.
You smiled unconsciously to yourself as you thought of Chanyeol, feeling all warm inside, until a voice burst your bubble.
“Are you going to keep smiling to yourself like a loser or are you going to take this shot?”
You shook your head as you came back to reality - a reality that included sitting on a stool in Billie’s kitchen as she poured shot after shot. You weren’t much of a drinker, but for some reason or another you had agreed to drink with your best friend and Martina, a new friend you had made who recently moved in with Baekhyun and Sehun, although that was a whole other story for another day.
Martina spoke next, looking at you incredulously. “She’s barely had anything and she’s already tipsy.”
“Who knew a tipsy (Y/N) would mean a soft mess?” Billie mused, taking her own shot with a grimace. “She hasn’t shut up about Chanyeol for twenty minutes now!”
At the mention of his name, you pouted. “I just love him so much. And he’s gone chasing his dreams again and I miss him so mu-” before you could finish your sentence, Billie was pushing the shot glass right under your nose.
“Girl, it’s okay, I miss Kai, too. And I bet Martina misses Baekhyun as well.”
Martina snorted. “As if. Do you know how great it is to have the apartment to myself?”
Billie ignored her, instead focusing on your still evident frown. “Besides, they’re coming home tonight! You’ll see your boyfriend soon enough!”
You immediately beamed at that. “Yes! And then Yeollie and I can cuddle on the couch and he can tell me about his tour and I can tell him how much I love him and how much he means to me -” again, your long confession was interrupted, this time by your phone ringing.
You picked it up eagerly, after seeing “the tol one <3” displayed across your screen.
“Yeollie~” you greeted in a chirpy tone, one that made Chanyeol immediately laugh upon hearing it. You only ever called him Yeollie, or spoke to him like this when you were drinking.
“Jagi~” he greeted with the same amount of enthusiasm.
“Are you almost home yet?”
“Yeah, about that…” Chanyeol hesitated. “The boys wanted to go out to celebrate the end of the tour so I’m actually going to be back later than expected.”
You frowned. “But I miss you!”
“I miss you too! I’ll see you tomorrow, okay? First thing in the morning!”
“Okay,” You mumbled, still pouting, causing Chanyeol to chuckle.
“Now please don’t drink too much. You know you’re a lightweight, and I doubt that’s any fun for Billie and Martina.”
“How do you know I’m drinking?” you gasped, looking wide eyed around the room. “Can you read my mind? Are we soulmates?”
Chanyeol simply laughed, finding your little intoxicated antics adorable. “Maybe we are.” there was a pause, followed by a faint C’mon Chan! heard in the background. “Listen, (Y/N), I gotta go. But I’ll see you first thing tomorrow! I love you!”
“I love you, too. Bye!”
You sighed as you hung up, feeling a little down that you wouldn’t be seeing your boyfriend tonight. You picked up the shot glass and downed it within seconds, much to Martina’s amusement. Slamming the glass back down on the counter, you cried “another!”
You knew you would be gone to the world within minutes if you kept up like this, but you didn’t care. As long as it made waiting for Chanyeol easier.
Chanyeol still had a lovesick smile on his face as he hung up the phone and turned around, only to see his bandmates snickering and casting him gazes.
He pocketed his phone and walked towards his friends, taking a seat at the stool next to Sehun, while Baekhyun leaned against the bar, drink already in hand, and Kai just getting handed his. “What is it?”
“Who knew the day would come when Chanyeol became a total softie.” Baekhyun let out a chuckle.
Chanyeol narrowed his eyes at him. “Me? A softie? What are you talking about?”
“Looks like our guitarist is losing his edge.” Sehun smirked. “I totally called it. The moment he got together with (Y/N), he’s been like a lovesick puppy.”
“No way! You guys are hallucinating or something, there’s no way I’m soft or whatever. I’m still the coolest member, and y’all are just jealous.”
“Jealous?” Baekhyun scoffed, just as Sehun guffawed at the mention of “coolest”.
“Kai’s soft too! He’s been calling and messaging Billie every day of the tour!” Chanyeol accused, pointing at the bassist, who had been quietly standing on the side and observing the scene with an amused twinkle in his chocolate eyes, sipping at his beer.
“Yeah, but I’ve always been soft! This was expected of me!” Kai defended himself with a smug smile. “You, on the other hand, had this whole bad boy reputation before (Y/N).”
Chanyeol’s lip twisted into an annoyed grimace. He hated that they were right. He really had gotten soft, but he couldn’t help it! You just made him feel so happy and he still could not believe he was with you! He wouldn’t dare let his mates know they were right, though, and so he instead sat up a little straighter and looked defiant as he said his next words.
“I can still be manly, no matter what.”
“Define manly.” Baekhyun immediately rebutted.
“Is your masculinity that fragile?” Sehun rolled his eyes as he took gulp of his drink. “Just say you’re insecure about being soft and go.”
Chanyeol’s frown deepened. “Okay, let’s make a bet.”
This caught all of their attention and they turned towards him with piqued interest.
“A bet, you say?” a smile was already stretching on Kai’s face, his competitive nature seeping through his usual calm exterior. “I’m listening.”
“So am I.” Baekhyun agreed. “What do you have in mind?”
Chanyeol faltered, not expecting them to be on board right away. “Oh… I - um… I’m not sure yet.”
At this, they sighed, and went back to their drinks.
“We can’t just let this go, though.” Kai spoke first after a long pause, his competitiveness still not completely abandoning him yet.
Baekhyun nodded in agreement. “For real, we need to make this bet count. What’s at stake here?”
“Something big.” Kai grinned, mischievously. “Like, perhaps getting a tattoo?”
Chanyeol immediately shook his head, eyes wide in fear of the possibility of getting something they wanted permanently inked and he would most likely regret. “Dude, no, that’s way too intense for a stupid bet.”
“Okay, what about dyeing hair, then?” Sehun offered. “You could always dye it back or it’ll fade so it’s, like, not true commitment.”
“Yes, kinda like a one night stand!” Baekhyun had a proud smile on his face at his analogy, although he only received odd looks from his friends.
“Anyways,” Sehun continued, with a sigh, clearly ignoring Baekhyun’s comment. He was used to the red-haired singer’s remarks, having lived with him for over three years. “What do you think?”
“Easy,” Kai smiled, already confident.
Chanyeol, however pondered this. While Kai had recently dyed his hair silver for the tour, it had been a while since Chanyeol had anything other than dark brown. The last time Chanyeol had dyed his hair it had been during his emo days, and it was a mess that he wished he could avoid.
It was still better than getting tattooed, which was why he found himself nodding along with Kai, ready to suffer the consequences of failing this bet.
“Alright, that settles it then.” Baekhyun clapped his hands together in finality. “Now we just have to figure out what we’re actually going to do.”
“Well, since Chan is so adamant about proving how manly he is, or whatever, why don’t we go find those strength-testing arcade machines? The weakest has to dye his hair.”
The others nodded at Kai’s words.
Sehun pulled out his phone and began to search for any arcades still open at his late hour.
Chanyeol was not worried. He knew he was strong. Maybe Kai could take him, but there was no way he was going to lose to Sehun. The drummer was pretty thin and had always shown a great distaste in any physical activity, other than dance that is, but Chanyeol didn’t really count that. What was the point of being an amazing dancer if he wasn’t even going to show anyone? Sehun was so complicated, but that didn’t mean Chanyeol was going to allow himself to be beaten by him.
He smirked to himself, as he glanced at the drummer scrolling intently on his phone, his arms looking like twigs to the taller boy.
There was no way he was going to lose the bet.
Chanyeol couldn’t believe he lost the bet.
It was all an accident, a misstep that led to Chanyeol bumping into the machine and getting the lowest score. He didn’t even think it was possible to get such a low score, and he had voiced such thoughts to the others, who simply laughed and told him that there were no second chances. Thus Chanyeol ended up the loser, something he was not prepared for.
Chanyeol frowned as he looked at the photo Sehun had sent, of pastel colours, reminiscent of sweet, soft things and the complete opposite of who he was - or wanted to be. He should've known better, letting Sehun choose the hair colour. Chanyeol knew how Kai got when he won a game, and he knew Baekhyun couldn't be trusted with anything, so he figured that Sehun was the safest option.
But now as he looked at the pinks, purples and blues that took up his phone screen, he was beginning to regret giving the youngest all the power. Sehun may not have spoken much, but he could be quite the shit when he wanted to.
Chanyeol sighed as he finally entered the hair salon after wasting a good amount of time standing outside. He knew he had to do it sooner or later. Part of the deal was that he had to go get it done as soon as he could, and before he could see you, for which he felt guilty. He had told you last night that he would see you first thing in the morning, and yet here he was about to dye his hair a ridiculous colour before even kissing you for the first time in weeks.
The nerves he felt sitting in the waiting room in the salon were nearly identical to those he felt before a performance, which was ridiculous because it was just hair! But no matter how much Chanyeol thought it over, he kept getting reminded of the last time he had dyed his hair, back when he was still a foolish teenager. He remembered how much you had made fun of him for it, at every chance you got. He only hoped that you would still love him after this drastic change.
When it was finally his turn, Chanyeol showed the young woman the picture Sehun had sent for reference. The shocked expression on her face only made Chanyeol feel worse. He was definitely going to regret ever bringing up a bet.
It was a long process of bleaching and dyeing all the shades. Chanyeol sat with his heart in his throat, and his teeth tugging at the flesh of his lower lip, his eyes squeezed shut, afraid of what he might see.
“I think we’re done,” came the sweet voice of the worker, whose name Chanyeol had learned was Yeri. “And, if I may comment, I think it suits you really well.”
“Really?” Chanyeol was still afraid to open his eyes, knowing that nothing good could come out of having pink hair.
“Yes, trust me. You look great!”
Chanyeol hesitantly opened his eyes and, sure enough, the person he saw in the mirror in front of him looked a completely different person. The pastel colours made him look younger than he actually was, and gave him the look of innocence. Strangely enough, Chanyeol loved how he looked.
“It looks like cotton candy.” he gasped, reaching a hand to his hair to see if it felt as soft as it looked.
“It really does!” Yeri laughed. “I’m glad you like it.”
“Are you kidding? I love it! Thank you so much!” with newfound confidence, Chanyeol paid, and rushed to where you were, excited to see your reaction to the new him.
You were pissed.
I’ll see you first thing in the morning.
That liar. You looked over at the clock hanging on the kitchen wall, and saw that it was already half past ten.
You took a big gulp of your scalding tea, angrily. Having a hangover didn’t help your mood, either. You really shouldn’t have drunk that much.
Billie had told you to spend the night, but you insisted you needed to go home, all too ready to see your boyfriend. But it looked like he clearly had better things to do than see you. You had even gone next door, but only found Kai, who gave you the most unsatisfying answer to your questions.
“Chanyeol is out. He’ll be back soon.”
That fucker wasn’t even answering his texts. You knew the minute he walked through your door, you were going to go off. There wasn’t a chance you were going to let him get away with this.
Where had he gone to? All alone? You had messaged Martina, and she had confirmed that Sehun and Baekhyun were both home. What could Chanyeol possibly be doing alone on a Tuesday morning?
You were about to call him again, fingers hovering over his name, when you heard your front door open. You half expected it to be your older brother, Jumin, which was strange since he had left for work two hours ago. But then you heard the unmistakable voice of your boyfriend, something you hadn’t heard in person for weeks.
“Honey, I’m home!”
Your previous anger dissipated in seconds after hearing his deep voice, your feet padding against the hardwood floor as you ran to meet him. You would’ve jumped right into his arms, and he had been expecting it too, his arms already open, ready to catch you, but you stopped in your tracks when you saw him.
“What the fuck did you do to your hair?”
Chanyeol looked at you, appalled. “No ‘hello’? No ‘I missed you’? Should I re-enter and we can start this from the top?” he gestured to the door behind him, ready to walk back out.
You ignored him, instead choosing to walk closer to him and reaching a hand out to touch his hair in curiosity. You ran your hands through the strands, watching as the various colours slipped through your fingers.
Chanyeol looked down at you with a nervous smile. “How do you like it?”
“It’s so... “ you paused, searching for the right word, your hands still playing with his hair, which he clearly enjoyed, his eyes fluttering shut at the feeling, and slightly leaning in to your touch.
“Soft.”
“Yeah, the hairdresser conditioned it a lot.” he chuckled. “I thought it was going to be dry because of all the bleach and stuff, but I’m glad it isn’t.”
“No -” you shook your head. “-I mean, yes it is really soft, but I meant like, you look soft.”
There it was again, Chanyeol being associated with soft. He didn’t understand why he was suddenly always being told this. Chanyeol wasn’t soft. He couldn’t be.
“Why does everyone keep insisting I’m soft?”
He opened his eyes slowly, casting his gaze down towards you and catching you looking at his hair in wonder, before finally meeting his eyes.
You let out a laugh, amused at his obvious annoyance at the situation. “Chanyeol, are you kidding me? You’re the softest! You’re just so cute and fluffy and -” you let go of his hair to squish his cheeks in your hands, laughing at how adorable he looked. “- the squishiest.”
He swatted your hands away, pouting, which really wasn’t helping his argument. “I’m not soft. I’m the opposite of it, actually! I’m hard!”
You rose an eyebrow at him. “You’re hard?”
“Yeah! I’m so har - nevermind that sounds wrong.”
You burst into laughter, while he kept calling you ‘dirty-minded’ and ‘nasty’, but nevertheless laughing with you as he held you close. You buried your face in his chest, inhaling his scent that you had missed so much while he had been away.
“Don’t be fooled though,” you murmured into his chest, your voice coming out muffled from the fabric of his t-shirt. “You’re still the cutest, and this cotton candy hair proves it.”
Chanyeol sighed, and you felt it, the way his chest heaved as he did it. “I hate you.” he muttered as he kissed the top of your head. “But, I’ll prove you wrong. I can still be manly despite this cotton candy hair.”
You looked up at him, whispering, “I’d like to see you try,” before going on your tiptoes in order to kiss him.
You thought Chanyeol would have changed his hair by now.
It had been a little over a week since his return, and he was still prancing about with his fairy-coloured hair. You thought he would've gone back to his natural hair colour by now, but as each day passed, Chanyeol seemed to be more in love with his new look. He was often exclaiming how good of a change this was, and how he felt like a new person. He even went as far as claiming that he should've “gone pink” earlier.
No matter how much he adored his cotton candy hair, Chanyeol could never escape the teasing from his members and you. Every chance you got, you would call him cute, and ruffle his hair, much to his annoyance. He still insisted that he was just a manly and hot as he was before, but with each passing day it became harder and harder to see him as anything other than soft.
“C’mon guys, we all know I rock this pink hair.” Chanyeol defended himself after Baekhyun had made fun of his coloured locks for the tenth time in the last hour.
You were all hanging out in his garage, the door open to let in the occasional summer breeze, reminiscent of old times, when the band was still up and rising. A lot of things had changed since those days. For one, you were here, sitting in Chanyeol’s lap, something you wouldn’t even dream of doing this time last year. There was also the addition of Billie, sitting next to Kai, and even newer was Martina, standing off to the side and casting the occasional glance at Sehun, who had taken up his usual spot, hidden behind his drums.
“Dude, seriously,” Kai started, looking at Chanyeol’s hair in distaste. “The bet is over, you can really get rid of it now.”
Your boyfriend scoffed. “Nonsense, I like it! I should’ve dyed it sooner.”
Sehun rolled his eyes, a habit of his you never got tired of. “Let’s be honest, you’re about the only person who likes it.”
There was a round of laughter, including your own, which only caused Chanyeol to frown even more.
“See? Even your girlfriend agrees it was a mistake.” you shot Baekhyun a glare at being called out like this, but it was too late, for Chanyeol was looking down at you demandingly.
“Was it really a mistake, (Y/N)? You told me you liked it!”
You looked back at him, his face quite close to yours, eyes already searching yours for any trace of deceit, but you quickly eased your features into a sweet smile. “Of course I do! You look cute.” you ruffled his hair, causing his face to scrunch up in the most endearing way. “Absolutely adorable. My cotton candy fairy cupcake prince.”
“Holy shit, I think I just barfed in my mouth.” Martina gagged, a hand covering her mouth.
“Seconded.” Baekhyun could not keep the disgusted look off of his face as he looked at you and Chanyeol.
“I’m not cute, though!” Chanyeol protested, for what felt like the millionth time. “My fans still think I’m hot!”
“As one of your fans, I know that you guys could literally be bald and you’d still have girls busting a nut.” Billie spoke nonchalantly, as if it was just a matter of fact, however her comment had the boys choking on their spit.
“It’s the truth.” you agreed. “You guys have no idea the kind of things these girls say about you. It’s wild.”
“They’re so far up your asses, of course they still think you’re hot, Chanyeol.” Billie continued. “No offense though!”
“Full offense, actually.” Baekhyun butt-in.
“Like you’re any better Baek.” Martina snorted. “Should I tell everyone about that awful mullet you had back in middle school?”
“Baekhyun with a mullet? This I need to hear about.” Kai laughed, while the singer sunk lower in his seat in embarrassment, sending his childhood friend daggers as she dove into the long-winded, humiliating tale.
You were trying to pay attention to it as well, always ready to hear funny stories at the expense of Chanyeol’s bandmates, but were finding it harder to do so with Chanyeol leaning in to whisper into your ear.
“You know very well I could still have you screaming my name in minutes, with your hands twisted in this very same hair. Let’s see you call me cute after I fuck you so hard you won’t be able to walk for a week.”
You swallowed, your mouth suddenly dry, though you tried your best to mask the way his words were affecting you.
He leaned even closer, though, his lips moving against the shell of your ear, as he breathed his next words. “We could totally just slip right out of here without anyone noticing. We do have a lot of time to makeup for.”
You bit your lip, but otherwise refused to give in. Your heart was pounding in your chest, blood rushing at unimaginable speeds, heating up all of your body. His deep voice caused a shiver to run down your spine. It really had been a while.
Chanyeol captured your earlobe in his teeth, tugging at it softly. “What do you say?”
You nearly moaned right then and there, before reminding yourself that you were in front of all your friends. You could not give in. Chanyeol was trying to prove his point, and although he was doing a damn good job at it, you would rather suppress all of your hormones in order to prove him wrong. It was what you had been doing for years, you had mastered it at this point.
You turned to look at him, seeing that he had a smirk playing at his lips, thinking he had gotten to you. You leaning in to whisper in his ear only reinforced his smug look, his eyes now hooded and his breath hitched as he waits for your words.
“So should I scream cotton candy or soft fairy?”
His smirk completely disappeared within seconds, and through your laughter, you heard him muttering to himself.
“God, I hate you.”
Chanyeol hadn’t stopped trying to prove how sexy he could be for the next few days. He would purposely do all of the things he knew would drive you crazy. But you were strong. You knew you weren’t going to let him win. With that ridiculous new hair, there was no way you were going to let him be anything other than cute.
It was as if he had never left. You were back to your teasing antics, the taunts and playful comments only fuelling your feelings for him. Of course this is how it had always been. All those years spent hating each other and constantly being at each other’s throats could not completely disappear in the matter of months being in a relationship. One of the best things about being with Chanyeol was the fact that the two of you could still tease each other to no end, just as you had before. The only difference was that now your arguments would end more often than not in rough sex.
But not today. There was no way you were getting into bed with Stephanie from LazyTown. No matter how hot Chanyeol looked. It was a matter of seeing how long you could last.
It was a Monday night in late July, and you found yourself standing before the bar where it all began. It had been Kai’s idea to have a little secret performance here.
“For old times’ sake.” he had insisted.
The bar hadn’t changed at all since the last time you had visited it, which had been a few months; University had no mercy on you. It felt just as it had when you came here for the very first time, the iconic night you had seen Chanyeol performing in this very room. Nearly a year later and your hand was clasped in the guitarist’s as he led you to the stage where they were getting set up.
“Do you think many people are going to show up?” Martina was asking Baekhyun, curiously eyeing the mostly empty bar.
It was not the biggest, but it held a familiar feeling, like revisiting a childhood home. The ambiance was created with the hanging light bulbs that cast a soft yellow glow. You smiled to yourself as you recalled how many people had come to watch them back then. White Noise really was talented, there was no doubt about it.
“We didn’t really advertise it, so I have no idea.” Baekhyun shrugged. “It is a Monday night, so perhaps not many, but who cares, we’re here for nostalgic purposes.”
“We’ve been playing here for the past five years.” Chanyeol explained. “It was where we had our first gig. This is where it all started.”
“Oh wow, that’s pretty cool.” Martina nodded her head, impressed. “This place is super cute and lowkey, too. I like it.”
“Yeah Sehun’s old man did a good job with this place.” Kai smiled proudly, slapping Sehun on the back as the younger passed him in order to take his place behind his beloved drums.
“Wait, Sehun’s dad owns this place?” You didn’t know why you hadn’t known before. You never really spoke to Sehun, he mostly remained silent whenever you were all gathered together. You had always figured he was just shy.
“Wow, (Y/N) is a fake fan.” Baekhyun laughed.
“Well, given she did hate you for the past… how many years was it? Six?” Billie looked over at you for confirmation, but you simply rolled your eyes.
“Hey guys, I think we’re starting soon.” Sehun finally spoke, and you turned to see a small crowd beginning to form in front of you. The boys had already finished setting up, and were all set to go.
You looked up at Chanyeol, and ruffled his fluffy hair. He leaned down, hoping for a kiss, but you simply pecked him on the corner of his lips. “Good luck!”
“Fucking tease,” he growled, causing you to give him the widest grin.
You went over to Billie and Martina, taking a seat at the bar, in order to watch the show.
The crowd wasn’t as large as you were used to, but you didn’t mind. It was small and intimate and brought you back to that night Billie dragged you here for your very first White Noise performance.
They performed as they always did, with their heart and soul pouring out in every sound. As always, Chanyeol was the biggest mess while performing with the utmost passion. He was just as bad as he was that night, his lip biting, his unnecessary dance moves, and the black muscle tee was only showing off his arms, as well as further accentuating his broad shoulders.
But surprisingly enough, that wasn’t what was turning you on right now. You hated to admit it, but the pink hair - the fucking cotton candy ice cream fluff on his head - really, really suited him. He was like a completely different person.
Maybe it was his words from the past week finally getting to you, or perhaps it was the way he pushed his hair back, you weren’t too sure, but you were squeezing your thighs together as you kept staring at him.
“Girls,” Martina spoke after a long time spent in silence. She cleared her throat before speaking again, this time in a higher volume so she could be heard over the music. “I hate to say this, but Chanyeol really does look good with pink hair.”
“Fuck yes, he does.” you found yourself agreeing without so much as batting an eyelash, not wanting to take your eyes away from him. “That’s my boy.”
The rest of the performance went smoothly, with you still ogling your boyfriend without a care in the world. All you knew was that he had been right along, the pink hair most definitely did not prevent him from being as sexy as he was before.
The minute it ended, you waited a total of two minutes before making your decision. You marched right up to where he was, putting his guitar away.
“Hey, (Y/N), how was it?” he was slightly out of breath, and very sweaty after his performance, which only intensified your need for him.
You didn’t even answer his question, only tugging on his hand to pull him to the back of the bar.
The bathroom was thankfully unoccupied, and you locked the door the minute both of you were inside.
Chanyeol looked at you in confusion, ready to ask what was up, when he was interrupted by you grabbing the back of his neck and pulling him in for a hard kiss. He immediately parted his lips, letting you take control for about a minute before his dominant side kicked in, his hands reaching around you to squeeze your ass. You gasped when he lifted you up and sat you down on the edge of the sink.
“So I’m guessing this means you liked it?” he smirked against your lips.
You ignored him, preoccupied with trying to rid him of his shirt, causing him to chuckle. He lifted it over his head easily, before helping you take yours off. You immediately let your hands freely roam his chest, still slick with sweat from having just performed.
“Wait, (Y/N), I’m gross and sweaty, don’t you wanna wait until I shower first?”
You were nipping at his neck now, leaving a trail of opened mouth kisses and beautiful colours in your wake. “Shut up, it’s sexy. And besides, we have a lot of catching up to do.” you began making a path back up to his lips, where you hesitated. “I’ll just join you in the shower later.”
“Holy shit,” he breathed, before catching your bottom lip in his teeth, causing your moan to fill his ears.
You really didn’t realize how much you needed him until you felt his fingers unbutton your shorts. He watched your face in fascination and wonder as he always did, because he adored the way your breath would get caught and your eyes would screw shut as he pleasured you.
You felt his long fingers ghosting over your covered core, making you immediately grasp onto his shoulders to brace yourself for what you knew was to come. You shut your eyes as you felt him push your panties to the side, biting your lip, anticipating, but to no avail.
“Chanyeol, what’s taking so long?” you huffed, glaring at him.
“Oh, sorry, I just missed you.”
Leave it to Chanyeol to be sentimental in the middle of sex. You rolled your eyes.
“I swear to God, Chanyeol, if you don’t sta- Oh my God!” your sentence ended abruptly as you moaned, finally feeling Chanyeol entering your heat.
Chanyeol paused. “Hmm? You were saying?”
“Just fucking move!”
You heard him laugh, but did as you requested, thrusting his finger in you in a rapid pace, before eventually adding another, throwing you off guard. Your moans began to increase in volume the faster and harder he went. Chanyeol sealed them by kissing you hard, reminding you that there was only the door of the bathroom separating you from everyone else in the bar. Had it been any other time, you would have been concerned about your friends worrying about your whereabouts, or worse, hearing you and Chanyeol, but right now you were far too gone to care. Never in a million years would you have been the one to drag Chanyeol into a public bathroom to fuck, no matter how many times you fantasized about it.
Chanyeol began to curve his fingers upwards with each thrust, hitting your sweet spot head-on. Your world was spinning, the knot in your stomach beginning to form. You could feel the end coming soon, and you began to meet Chanyeol’s thrust halfway, until you were pretty much riding his long digits.
You were rapidly approaching the edge, the grand finale, when he stopped. You had been so preoccupied with your release that you barely noticed Chanyeol had stopped kissing your lips and began kissing you lower and lower until he was right before your drenched center.
You were about to protest, when you realized where he was. He pulled your shorts and underwear down your legs in the slowest pace he could muster, enjoying the way you begged him to hurry the fuck up.
When your garments were at your ankles, you hastily kicked them off. With the amount of time Chanyeol was taking, you could feel your high slowly receding. Chanyeol separated your thighs, getting far to comfortable between them.
Almost like an instinct, your fingers found themselves tangled in his hair, almost bringing him closer to you. “Come on Chanyeol, just get to it already!”
Chanyeol just smirked, far too amused for your liking. “Would you look at that, I can still have you soaking despite my supposed soft hair. Who would’ve thought.”
“For fuck’s sake! You choose the absolute worst times to be petty!”
“So should I go change it back to brown tomorrow?” he rose an eyebrow at you.
You did not even hesitate with your answer, practically hissing. “Don’t you fucking dare.”
“Knew it.” That was all he needed to hear before he dove right in, licking a long stripe against your slit.
Maybe it was the fact that he was making you feel so good, or maybe it was the fact that it was Park Chanyeol, the boy you had somehow fallen in love with, in the craziest of ways, but seeing him now, with his head between your thighs, and your fingers tugging at his hair, hard enough that it must’ve been hurting, you thought that there was nowhere else you would rather be.
Perhaps Chanyeol having pink hair wasn’t the absolute worst thing in the world, after all.

The 15 Best Albums of 2019 (So Far)
We are just over halfway through 2019, and the amount of amazing music that we have been blessed with thus far is nearly enough to help us forget about everything less than amazing going on in the world around us...nearly. So, with an ever-growing list of albums, mini-albums, projects, mixtapes, and the like filling up our Spotify queue, we wanted to take a moment to recognize some of the best projects that have graced our eardrums this year. In no particular order, these are 15 of the best albums of 2019 (so far).
Billie Eilish – WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO?
youtube
Favorite track: “bury a friend”
2019 was undoubtedly Billie Eilish’s breakout year. From delivering a momentous Coachella debut to delivering one of the most anticipated albums of the decade, Eilish did not just leave her mark, she took a blazing hot iron rod and engraved her name. WHEN WE ALL FALL ASLEEP, WHERE DO WE GO? arrived as a thrilling, hypnotic, and brilliantly ominous vision from one of pop’s new stars. Doing more than simply delivering on all the hype that had come to encompass the pop star in the matter of less than year, Eilish broke free of any expectations to present an album that took the world by storm.
Aries – Welcome Home
youtube
Favorite track: “BAD NEWS”
Aries is arguably one of the most underrated figures in the music scene today. Originally rising to cult-like fame with a series of YouTube videos that spanned the range from production deconstruction videos to re-imagining Migos as a Mariachi band, the producer and artist’s debut mini album WELCOME HOME proved him to be so much more than just an enigmatic viral force. With an infectious blend of emo, hip-hop, and alternative rock aesthetics, Aries brought to a life a world brimming with soaring highs and crushing lows.
Lizzo – CUZ I LOVE YOU
youtube
Favorite track: “Juice”
Self-love feels like Lizzo sounds. Combining her upbringing in Houston rap, gospel soul, and classical flute (yes, the queen kills it on the flute), Lizzo’s major label debut Cuz I Love You cemented her place in the modern hip-hop vernacular. Abounding with humor, charisma, and an overflowing wealth of sexual and body positivity, the 14-track offering is a deft illustration of the power of simply loving yourself and singing your praises delivered in a remarkable package of hip-hop and R&B.
Kevin Abstract – ARIZONA BABY
youtube
Favorite track: “Peach” (feat. bearface, JOBA, Dominic Fike)
Few artists can maintain the level of visceral excitement that BROCKHAMPTON leader Kevin Abstract keeps up throughout ARIZONA BABY’s 11-track run. Produced by Jack Antonoff and featuring Ryan Beatty, Dominic Fike, and fellow BROCKHAMPTON members JOBA and bearface, the solo project cemented Abstract as an undeniable hip-hop auteur. With the way Abstract waxes poetry on his past demons, dreams of rap stardom in the context of first seeing Tyler, the Creator live, and the lived gay experience, ARIZONA BABY is essential listening for 2019 and beyond.
Tyler, the Creator – IGOR
youtube
Favorite track: “EARFQUAKE” (feat. Playboi Carti, Charlie Wilson, Jessy Wilson)
Any “best albums of 2019” compilation list that does not feature Tyler, the Creator’s IGOR is sorely missing the mark. Tyler, the Creator has long existed as one of rap’s most polarizing figures, but, with the release of Flower Boy in 2017, he released what felt like a landmark album… and then came IGOR. With bold experimental production, a host of spectacular features, and a sound quite unlike anything else out there at the moment, this is Tyler, the Creator’s magnum opus. Well, at least until he drops his next album.
Lewis Capaldi – DIVINELY UNINSPIRED TO A HELLISH EXTENT
youtube
Favorite track: “Grace”
In the span of less than two years, Lewis Capaldi has witnessed a meteoric rise to fame. The Scottish singer-songwriter went from amazing crowds in pubs in his native Whitburn to selling out arenas across the world, all thanks to the power of his voice and moving songwriting. It is an innate gift that Scottish singer channels in his long-awaited album DIVINELY UNINSPIRED TO A HELLISH EXTENT, which arrives as a heart-rending portrait of an artist on the rise to worldwide stardom. Plus, it doesn’t hurt he’s a hilarious guy with a stellar Tinder bio to boot.
slowthai – Nothing Great About Britain
youtube
Favorite track: “Gorgeous”
Nothing Great About Britain is an obvious social commentary on a post-Brexit Britain, but it is more than just a reaction to a singular political event. The debut album from critically-acclaimed UK rapper slowthai, Nothing Great About Britain is an unflinching glimpse into everything from his upbringing in the council estates of North Hampton to a country increasingly mired in toxic nationality. Sonically, slowthai’s debut is as complex as the social and political issue the UK rapper deftly tackles.
Stella Donnelly – Beware of the Dogs
youtube
Favorite track: “Old Man”
A proudly self-proclaimed shit-stirrer, it comes as no surprise that Stella Donnelly first introduced her debut album with a lead single that doubled as a biting single of a generation of men whose time is up. The aforementioned single “Old Man” is not the only moment on Beware of the Dogs that the Australian singer-songwriter leverages her knack for infusing cutting socio-political commentary into an infectious brand of jangly indie rock. From “Boys Will Be Boys” to the titular track “Beware of the Dogs,” Donnelly’s debut carries with it a salient message told through stirring song.
Maggie Rogers – Heard It In a Past Life
youtube
Favorite track: “Give a Little”
Maggie Rogers’ musical résumé holds two impressive distinctions. She is one of the few musicians to make Pharrell Williams visibly shed tears, and she released an album earlier this year that you absolutely need to be listening to. Heard It In A Past Life, the lauded debut album from Rogers, combined folk, dance, pop and R&B to unprecedented effect and established her as different sort of star. With a musical vision that stays wholly true to herself, while still finding the space to explore newfound territory, this is an album you need in your life.
Carly Rae Jepsen – Dedicated
youtube
Favorite track: “Too Much”
There are no two ways about it; Carly Rae Jepsen is a pop icon. More than just a one-hit wonder (with that being said, “Call Me Maybe” has most definitely stood the test of time), the long-awaited follow-up to Emotion arrived this year to widespread acclaim. Dedicated channels all the joy pop and disco has brought with them over the years to present a collection of songs that relishes in the emotional rush of being both lovesick and heartbroken. This is pop done right.
Flume – Hi This Is Flume (Mixtape)
youtube
Favorite track: “How To Build A Relationship” (feat. JPEGMAFIA)
After what felt like an eon of radio silence, electronic auteur Flume returned in brilliant and unconventional fashion. Returning not with an album but a mixtape, Hi This Is Flume saw the Australian producer and artist shying away from the pop-minded inclinations of Skin to deliver a wildly experimental electronic spectacle. Enlisting some of music’s most avant-garde figures, from slowthai, SOPHIE, to JPEGMAFIA, Hi This Is Flume is a glimpse into an artist who forever changed the landscape of electronic music.
Wallows – Nothing Happens
youtube
Favorite track: “Are You Bored Yet?” (feat. Clairo)
In many ways, Wallows’ debut album has been a decade in the making. Operating as a band since they were eleven, Braeden Lemasters, Dylan Minnette, and Cole Preston first whisked up a palpable fervor for their full-length project in 2017 with the release of their debut single “Pleaser.” Wallows channeled the excitement surrounding any hint of their highly-anticipated debut album into a collection of exhilarating, emotional-driven indie rock and anti pop perfection. Nothing Happens is a sonic embodiment of a shared childhood dream placed alongside the realities of growing up.
Steve Lacy – Apollo XXI
youtube
Favorite Track: “Like me” (feat. DAISY)
Steve Lacy, who you may know as the bassist, guitarist, and producer for The Internet, invokes the mystical air of a decades-long R&B, funk, and soul tradition in his debut album Apollo XXI. There is a novel yet nostalgic quality to the whole affair, as if you were to suddenly awake in the ‘70s with the sun peeking through your blinds on a warm summer day. The timeless nature of Lacy’s debut makes it feel like that this is not only one of 2019’s best album, but perhaps one of this generation’s best.
Nilüfer Yanya – Miss Universe
youtube
Favorite Track: “In Your Head”
Black Mirror and breathtaking indie rock build the crux for Nilüfer Yanya’s spellbinding debut album Miss Universe. The West London native’s portrait of reality blurs the lines between dystopic technological vision and haunting picture of reality itself through a collection of songs that nears the sacred, terrifying space of a fully-realized concept album. Whether you take it as a concept album or not, there is a resounding sense of urgency to be found in the exhilarating body of work Yanya has put together.
Ariana Grande – thank u, next
youtube
Favorite Track: “thank u, next”
From Arichella to surprise dropping quite possibly the breakup track that will define a generation, 2019 belonged to Ariana Grande. thank u, next illustrated Grande’s consistently jaw-dropping range, her gift for transforming sweet nothings to lovelorn anthems, and most of all, the promise of a lasting pop star. The veritable pop star certainly has come a long way from her humble beginnings as a child star.

JURASSIC SHARK: WE KEPT THE SHREDDING
photography by debi del grande
For a few years now, Monrovia’s Jurassic Shark have been building a dedicated following with hard work, wild shows, and a style that blends driving indie rock and classic heart-on-sleeve emo with some deceptively sophisticated psychedelic touches. The band self-released their debut full-length album Overflow in August, and it’s a record which sees the band moving toward more complicated and dynamic rhythms and melodies, as well as a cleaner and more focused sound. But none of this growth comes at the expense of the energy, passion, and sincerity which defined their earliest recordings—which is exactly what made the band so endearing in the first place. L.A. RECORD was able to catch up with all four members of the group—Max, Will, Daniel, and John—and hear all about the new record, their early history, and their absolutely practical affection for Foster’s beer. They perform with the Red Pears and Spendtime Palace on Sat., Oct. 27, at the El Rey. This interview by Simon Weedn.
Daniel Fowler (guitar/vocals): We’re excited! We’re just drinking some Foster’s right now. My understanding is that’s Australian for beer. Jonathan Hastings (drums): That is correct. It used to be thee beer for us, but I think we’re more Modelo people now I’d say. Our guitarist Will is quite the bartender as well—he makes a good Old Fashioned. What drew you to the Foster’s? Maximo Huete (bass): I think it’s because they’re cheap and they look like a good amount for the price. Jonathan Hastings: They look like humungous oil cans. Maximo Huete: And they look cool because they’re fat. Will Cragoe (guitar): Quantity over quality. I used to be a big fan of Miller High Life for similar reasons. Jonathan Hastings: Those are great—the champagne of beer. You just put out your debut full-length Overflow! Were these all new songs? Daniel Fowler: It took us a while to get it recorded so the songs aren’t brand new. We’ve been playing them together for a while. But they’d never been recorded or released anywhere else. Jonathan Hastings: It was about a year or two before we had them recorded. Maximo Huete: I think all the songs were written in 2017? It was over the course of a year give or take. Was it a conscious choice to put off recording that entire time or was it more logistical? Daniel Fowler: Logistical. Maximo Huete: Logistical. Will Cragoe: Logistical. Jonathan Hastings: Yeah—we have a hard time getting the ball rolling on things sometimes. Daniel Fowler: The album is nine songs long, and if you put that in the span of a year and a half that’s a song every three months or something. We just put a bunch of thoughts and ideas together with the songs individually. As a whole I think the pieces fall into place and it ends up working out. Will made the tracklist which was pretty epic. I think it creates that individuality. Did you each come up with your own track lists and pick the one you liked best? Maximo Huete: We did them all individually and then we decided that Will’s was the best one. Daniel Fowler: And I don’t think we even listened to it. I think we just saw it and knew. That’s a thing that I think sometimes gets overlooked when people are making albums. It’s really cool that you put that much effort into yours. I know when it was originally released, Smashing Pumpkins’ Mellon Collie And The Infinite Sadness had different track listings between the CDs and the vinyl. Daniel Fowler: Crazy—I did not know that. We were just talking about covering a Smashing Pumpkins song last night. ‘Today,’ right? ‘Today’ is the name of the song. Jonathan Hastings: I don’t know if we were super serious about it, but we had to play it for a second. That’s one of my favorite songs of theirs. I think it’s one of the most well produced tracks of the 90s. Do you work a lot of covers into your sets? Daniel Fowler: We did a DEVO cover set two years ago. It was pretty amazing. We covered their first album. In its entirety? Daniel Fowler: No, it was minus two songs. It was minus ‘Satisfaction,’ terribly, and another one called ‘Mongoloid.’ Even though both are epic, we just thought that we couldn’t do it—we couldn’t touch them. It’s not super easy covering DEVO. Maximo Huete: What’s funny is that we covered DEVO before we began writing our album and it really helped us. It made us better musicians. Daniel Fowler: They’re a really punctual band—they’re so solid. Jonathan Hastings: Learning other band’s songs totally made me think about my own drumming differently. DEVO are one of my favorite bands and they’re so underrated. When you mention their name most people say, ‘Oh yeah, “Whip It” right?’ But they did so much more. Jonathan Hastings: True! We did not play ‘Whip It’ and I think there were some disappointed people in the crowd. Their first album is so good though! Daniel Fowler: Yeah, and the B-sides before it are all epic. They’re just a great band. I think it really helped with our punctuality. Our music before didn’t have any breaks—or perhaps it did, but this music we’re recording now is a lot more precise. I definitely thank DEVO for that. Are there other bands you’d entertain covering for an entire set? Maximo Huete: We’ve thought about doing Radiohead before? Daniel Fowler: No, we can’t do Radiohead. Jonathan Hastings: I think In Rainbows would be one of the coolest albums to cover. Daniel Fowler: It’d be so hard. Jonathan Hastings: I think we’re up for it. Daniel Fowler: I once had an idea that for every era of music we could choose a song, cover it, and then compile it into a time piece album. So from start to finish it’s like early era to post-modern music. Jonathan Hastings: I think a one-hit-wonders Halloween set would be awesome too. There are so many good songs from bands that you’ve never heard anything else from. Like that song ‘Your Love’ by the Outfield … that’s one of the amazing songs ever. But you don’t even know who that band is. I think that if you really committed to doing a specific Now That’s What I Call Music cover set though, you’d get to play some good songs … but also some really bad ones. Jonathan Hastings: I wonder how dark that rabbit hole gets. Daniel Fowler: Do they still make those? Do they have Now in 2018? Jonathan Hastings: They’ve got to be pretty deep into it at this point. Daniel Fowler: If they support bad music, maybe we could get on one? That could be our golden ticket! I think they’re still making Now and those Kidz Bop compilations too. Jonathan Hastings: That could be our golden ticket! If they got kids to cover our songs. Which song of yours would you want a group of little kids to cover though? Maximo Huete: Hmmm … ‘1963.’ Daniel Fowler: Probably ‘Vent.’ Jonathan Hastings: I don’t know—I want to hear those little kids shred. We’d have to pick a complicated one. Definitely ‘Arrowhead’ actually! Definitely ‘Arrowhead.’ Was it your plan all along to release your new album the same week as a summer blockbuster about a prehistoric shark? Daniel Fowler: We didn’t even know that was happening. Will Cragoe: We probably would have changed that a little if we had known. Jonathan Hastings: I saw the movie and it wasn’t so bad. I’m a really big fan of your band’s name. Daniel Fowler: I just made it up in my bed. I was also watching Jurassic Park. We’re all just big Spielberg fans. Jonathan Hastings: And it’s just his two best movies combined into one. Daniel Fowler: I think initially I wanted to start a surf music project, and I thought that would be a good name for that project. Then we all liked it and it just kind of stuck. We also used to have a couple other band names as well. Maximo Huete: One them was Mystery Alley because in high school we had a teacher named Mr. Reale. It was a terrible pun. Will Cragoe: I thought our first show was as Radiohead? Jonathan Hastings: Yeah, one time we were just Radiohead for the night. Daniel Fowler: And John used to groom a horse called … Phar Lap I think. Jonathan Hastings: No, I used to groom horses, but there was cool horse named Phar Lap and I thought that was a cool name. He was actually an Australian horse that won a ton of races and was super famous a long time ago. I’m noticing an Australian trend running through this band. Jonathan Hastings: Will went to Australia for a couple weeks! Will Cragoe: It was cool! I only went to the cities and stuff, I didn’t get to go into the outback and stuff. The cities were a lot like America, but it was really beautiful and everyone was really nice. It was fun! Daniel Fowler: We’ve played with a lot of Australian bands and they’ve all been super nice. There are so many amazing bands coming out of Australia right now! Daniel Fowler: All of the bands we’ve played with are excellent! We’ve been invited by a lot of the bands that come out here. Maximo Huete: There was a band called the Bennies that invited us down there one time. Jonathan Hastings: The Bennies are kind of big at this point. Daniel Fowler: They kill it. I hear Australian crowds are wild. You should take them up on the offer. Jonathan Hastings: They must be—they’re selling them these giant cans of beer. [laughs] You worked with Tabor Allen [Girlpool] and Devin O’Brien [Avi Buffalo] in the studio for this album, right? Daniel Fowler: We’ve known Tabor for a while and we’ve always looked up to him for his music and intellectual qualities. Jonathan Hastings: He’s engineered a lot of awesome records like Slow Hollows and he’s done a lot of cool stuff. We knew he was recording bands and we knew him from when we used to play with his band Wide Streets. We thought it would be cool to record with somebody that we were cool with. Daniel Fowler: And he has the most amazing attitude. Jonathan Hastings: He’s the nicest guy in the world. Did you know Devin from before as well? Maximo Huete: No, he brought him into the picture. Daniel Fowler: I think they were just set to collaborate. They’re like a dream team. It was amazing—we did everything in a day and they nailed it. Jonathan Hastings: They were down for everything the whole time and they were super helpful. We’d never been in a studio setting before, so they were really cool with everything. Did they bring you in and let you do your thing or did they offer guidance or advice? Daniel Fowler: They offered a lot, actually. They caught a lot of little tiny things that we really didn’t think about but in the end just helps overall. It’s important to have somebody from the outside helping us as a band. They definitely added their two cents and it was fucking worth it. There were a lot of times they kept the progression going just with their attitudes in general. I didn’t want to feel so overwhelmed and they helped me not feel overwhelmed. It was like having a mentor there—the nicest mentors ever. They were so balanced. It was an amazing experience for sure. One thing I really like about Overflow is how energetic and alive it sounds. Did you record the album fully live?

Mansions: Interview
words by Sarah Uluave and Majed Alkhadher, photo courtesy of Mansions
Mansions is a rock band hailing from Louisville, Kentucky currently residing in Seattle, Washington. They’ve traveled all over the US music scene the last ten years, touring with names like Hellogoodbye, The Front Bottoms, Taking Back Sunday, The Get Up Kids, and La Dispute, continuously giving their dedicated fanbase what they’ve claimed to be “the best live shows they’ve ever seen.” Their fuzzy sound gives them a signature edge, with songs reminiscent of the 90s emo rock we all love. Our writer, Sarah, is joined by a friend and fellow Mansions fan Majed as they chat with lead Christopher Browder about the band, WWE, and plans for upcoming music.
Electric Daze (Sarah): Who is Mansions?
We're a rock band. We tend to lean towards the fuzzier side of pop songs. Mansions started as my solo project, with me playing all of the instruments, and only playing shows that were acoustic. Since then, we've gone through a few different band members but nowadays it’s a pretty solid lineup. It’s much more collaborative, louder, and well, a band, versus the singer-songwriter kind of thing that it was in the beginning.
ED (Sarah): When you say your music got “louder,” do you think that was influenced by playing live shows?
I mean it definitely makes a difference. Louder songs are more fun to play. The downer kind of stuff is more fun to record, but it’s hard to be playing that out in front of people. My taste has changed over the years as well, so that made a big difference in the band sound.
ED (Sarah): Who are your biggest music inspirations?
Like I said, my taste changes over time. I go through phases where there will be certain bands that I listen to tons and tons, and then move onto the next one. Bands like Spoon, The Strokes, LCD Soundsystem…Ryan Adams was a big influence on me for a long time. There’s a lot of stuff that I grew up listening to, like The Get Up Kids and bands from that era, and they shaped a lot of how I played guitar and how I think songs should be structured. When you get that kind of influence when you're first starting to write songs, it sticks with you for a long time. But there are also artists today, like Kanye West, who I really like too. I’ve been able to pull inspiration from whatever I happen to be listening to at the time.
ED (Sarah): Was there a defining moment or time where you knew you had to pursue music as a profession?
Yeah definitely, when I was playing in bands in high school, I realized it was something I enjoyed in a totally different way than anything else that I enjoyed. Despite how much I loved it, it still seemed pretty far-fetched because the distance from being a local band to getting to actually tour felt pretty wide. So then I went on to college and was only doing music on the side but right when I was getting ready to graduate, I started getting interest from some different managers. And then Doghouse Records got interested, and I was like "Oh! This could actually happen, I could actually do this.” It's taken all sorts of weird turns since then, but I think that's when it became a real possibility and not just a dream.
After that, the struggle was constantly having to look for moments that really inspire you to do it. Especially if you're doing it full-time because it can become less of a fun hobby and becomes more work. So you just have to continuously remind yourself what “creating music” really is.
ED (Sarah): Do you have any examples of moments where you were re-inspired?
About a year ago, I realized I hadn’t really been interested in seeing live shows of bands for a long time. I think we had played so many shows that it just wasn’t as interesting anymore. But over this past summer, all of us in the band were at Bumbershoot and Tame Impala was playing, and seeing them play live...how loud it was and hearing how good they were live, it was like, "Oh my god, this is incredible. I want to be playing shows." It's good to be re-awakened a little bit.
ED (Sarah): That’s so cool. Your music is constantly changing with different tastes and inspirations, but since you've been around for a few years now, do you feel like there's anything fundamental to your sound that really defines you as Mansions?
I think so, the struggle is always wanting to keep those things that sound like us without repeating ourselves or being too predictable. I think in general there's a lot of fuzzy, distorted sounds that I know I gravitate to. I'm not really interested in pretty, clean sounding things. A lot of our songs will be pretty and nice sounding but then I like to throw some noise on it and make it a little bit dirtier and distorted.
ED (Sarah): For the last few months on social media, you’ve been eluding to new music coming in 2017, care to give any details about that and what and when?
There's not a lot of details that are concrete, we're still kind of figuring out whether it’ll be a full length or an EP. We did a batch of songs that I've been living with for maybe a year or two. We feel good about them and want them to come out, and more is coming. We just recorded drums for a bunch of them in December 2016, so that was the first step to making real versions of them. They're coming along so I'm eager to get stuff out there. It feels like it's been a long time, but we want to make sure we have enough songs for a full length set. There comes a point where I'd rather put 6 songs out now then wait another year to let out 10 instead, just to keep things from getting too stale. I think I'm just really attached to the album format because that's what I grew up listening to. But people consume music pretty differently now; it’s not necessary to have a full-length because it's not like you're putting a CD in your car and you need to have it be worth your time putting in your CD player, y’know?
ED (Sarah): Yeah because nowadays you can just plug your phone into your car and listen to whatever you want to play.
Yeah exactly. I wouldn't just want to put out two songs or anything like that, but doing a nice, little collection that makes sense together would be fun. I'm excited for people to hear the songs, I think they sound cool and they're a good continuation of what we're doing, but still different enough that it's interesting.
ED (Majed Alkhadher): You’ve said that Doom Loop is a little bit less "woe is me" like Dig Up the Dead and a little more "fuck you, whatever." What kind of a transformation can be expected between Doom Loop and future music?
It's hard to say right now before the stuff is done, before we ever work on anything I kind of have a list of things in my head that I want it to be like. “I want it to sound like this” or “I want accomplish that” or “these are some other things I want to try,” but it doesn't necessarily come out like that. You still have to just roll with the songs and see where it goes. I don't think it's going to be heavier than Doom Loop but not as much of a bummer record like Dig Up the Dead was - not like there's anything wrong with that at all, but it's just a different time in our lives. I think there's a little more of electronic influence on some of these, but still plenty of guitars. It's cool now because we got to work out the songs a little bit with the three of us playing them in a room, which is different than anything we've been able to do. Before, we had never played the songs together until the record was already out. So it's cool to get to play them together; however, at the same time we haven’t been touring in a while so I don't know what is going to happen with us as far as touring later. What's kind of nice with the songs is that it doesn't matter if we can play them live or not, we get to just kind of experience with them and try different things that don't necessarily have to be doable live. It grants us a lot of freedom.
ED (Majed): Will Robin's vocals return? I know that she sings the "80 fucking dollars" from ‘Two Suits,’ will that sort of thing happen in the future projects?
I'm sure she'll do some background vocals. I always like it, I think it sounds really good. I don't think any of the songs have that kind of duel vocals like ‘Two Suits,’ at least so far. But I'm sure she'll be doing something.
ED (Majed): I've noticed on some recent records that you've distanced yourself from programmed beats, do you have a dedicated drummer that you're playing with and are going to tour with?
Yeah we have a drummer now, his name is John Momberg. He was recommended to us by a friend years ago and started playing with us in fall 2012 when we went on tour with Taking Back Sunday. He's a really great drummer and a really good person so he fit in well with us. He’s been on tours with us since then. He played on Doom Loop and he's playing on the new songs too, but there will still be some kind of electronic beats in there. On Doom Loop there was originally more programmed beats, but he ended up doing some cool stuff that sounded drum machine-ee in a way that was way cooler than the programmed stuff, so I think there will be some kind of mix of programmed and raw beats from him on this record. He tour manages a big hip-hop guy so he has a foot in that world too, so he appreciates all kinds of beats as much as anyone.
ED (Majed): You guys are WWE fans right?
Oh yeah I definitely am. It's kind of embarrassing. I was a wrestling fan as a kid, and even then I kind of knew it was embarrassing it so I didn't really tell anybody about it. But then randomly a couple years ago I saw that it was on TV and I was like "I'm going to watch that, and it's going to be so funny." After that, it slowly it started sucking me back in and now I'm a full-blown fan again. It's cool, there's a lot to it. It's totally dumb on one level, but it's also unlike anything else. It’s funny because there’s surprising amount of people in bands that we've met that are into it too. It's kind of a weird secret club. In the last year or so it's become a little bit more accepted to say he's so I've been seeing people come out of the woodwork a little bit. I like real sports too, and I think when real sports are really great, it's when there's a really good story behind it. Like when you think about the Chicago Cubs winning this year! What was interesting about that was all the history and the storyline of it. So in pro-wrestling, even though the roles are predetermined, its purpose is still for a storyline. You're guaranteed to have an interesting story line and an interesting twist. A lot of it is terrible and you hate what they're doing but then they get the twist so perfect. And I mean the athletic part of it is cool to. It’s super cool to me that they don't actually kill each other when they're doing with this crazy stuff. Yeah I guess people get hurt but people aren't like dying all the time. We went to one of the events in person, and it's really impressive what they're doing. People always get hung up on the fact that it's fake, but like, duh of course it's fake! That's what's interesting about it! It's fun to try to figure out the storyline and where it's going and when something happens, you're like you're there probably setting up for this and that later on.
ED (Sarah): Do you think WWE has affected the way you write music?
Probably not, maybe if we heard one with a good theme song or something but usually the theme songs are pretty bad. It probably just distracts me just from when I should be working on music.
ED (Sarah): Other than the WWE questions, I have a few questions that fans are always wondering about their favorite bands. First and foremost, do you have any favorite cities?
We have favorite clubs for sure, like Cats Cradle in Carrboro, North Carolina. It's really great. Chapel Hill. New York is always exciting. There are those shows that are always a pain in the ass because of all the people on the guest list or being worried that your trailer is going to get stolen but those shows are always really fun. Chicago is really good, too. I'm trying to think of any that are less predictable…Atlanta is always been pretty good to us. It just depends. We live in Seattle but the Seattle shows are often the worst on the tour to be completely honest…except last time we came through Seattle it was actually really fun! So I guess I shouldn't talk trash about home. Seattle is great.
ED (Sarah): A lot of artists find it easier to write music on the road, was this the case for you?
No, I don't think I ever wrote a song on tour. There's just too much to do and I was usually tour managing us as far as like figuring out the logistics of what we need to do. So between driving and sleeping, there's not really much time. Sometimes I would work on lyrics if I already had a song going and I wanted to just work on the lyrics. It's a lot easier now for me to work on songs. But at the same time I have a full on full-time job at home and it takes up a lot of time.
ED (Sarah): What do you do as a full-time job if you don't mind me asking?
I work an office job, sort of like an IT thing. It's really nice, it takes off the financial pressure of working in the music industry. It gives me more freedom. The reason the album has been taking a while is because there's no rush to put it out. It's just once we think the songs are good enough, then will put out a record. But we don’t need to put out a record because we need to get back on tour or need to try to make money or keep people’s attention, which is kind of nice. It feels more like when we were working on music before we ever signed to a label or anything. It’s more about doing it because we want to and because it means something to us versus having to do it because we need to pay the bills

Isaac's pack - the first pack sleepover
summary: when isaac settled down in france, he decided it's about time he start his own pack, the problem is, he chose the silliest, most childish, but fierce girls to be his betas. Characters: - Isaac Lahey: The pack alpha, and the only male in the pack - Luna - Victoria - Daisy - Radwa Warnings: sass, fluff Word count: 1249 Also shout out to the Isaac's pack™ gc girls •••••••• It was Luna's idea, and the smile on her face widened when she was preparing everything she needed for her pack's first ever sleepover, tons and tons of comfy pillows and blankets spread on the floor, a box of different movies victoria dropped by earlier this afternoon. "Hey i'm sorry i'm late!! I'm always late but that's not the point", the loud clumsy voice that belonged to Radwa, her pack mate yelled from the front door, "hey luna" she said as she put all the food and crisps and drinks on the counter, "Everyone's coming yea?!", Radwa said as she set everything in right places. "Yup all the girls are in but i guess, as always, vic has to drag his wolfy ass along so he can be here" TWO HOURS LATER "Oh c'mon isaac" vic said as she dragged the older boy. "don't be a grumpy wolfy scarf boy!" daisy added as she pushed him farther into luna's place and pushed him to make him fall on the pillows & blankets filled floor. "Oh hey look mr. Brightside is here!! HI SCARF BOY YOU MISSED ME" radwa said before jumping right on him and hugging him like a big teddy bear. "fuck off rad! where's luna?", Isaac mumbled. "I'm here grumpy what's up?!" luna greeted from the door before disappearing to prepare some things for the sleepover. An hour later isaac eventually stopped complaining and settled down with everyone and got comfy to watch a movie, "please don't choose a cheesy romantic movie" he sighted, "who the hell you think we are!! a couple of middle school pre teens!! Isaac WE ARE WEREWOLVES JUST BECAUSE WE'RE GIRLS DOESN'T MEAN WE'RE CHEESY AN..." "RAD SHUT UP!!", all the girls yelled back at the small figured werewolf while Isaac had his usual "oh this is so not gonna end well" look plastered on his face. Luna got into the room holding a box filled with movies "Well i have, the harry potter series, the full disney movies series, and lord of the rings, make your choice ladies and isaac!", luna said as she sat the box on the floor. "We're so watching harry potter", daisy said only to be interrupted by everyone else disagreeing and choosing disney series. after 10 more minutes of the pack arguing over which disney film they're watching they finally choose Lion king. The pack, Isaac and his little wolves, sat on the many many pillows and blankets all cuddled up with each other with pizza and popcorn around them. After two hours of Lion King songs and tears and pizza the movie ended and the pack was just a big stack of -semi- human bodies which it's center was isaac. "I'm both tired and bored" victoria groans, "same" the tires voices of the rest says. "But guys what about a makeover!! We haven't sat down to relax and talk in such a long time", luna jumped excitedly. "Sounds good!" "Hell yea!!" "I'm in" "hell to the no." "SHUT UP ISAAC", all the girls said in one voice. Luna & vic paired up, Daisey chose to do her own makeup, while radwa got paired with the forever grumpy wolf, talk about fire & fire, those two were a fire of grumpiness and sass all put together. The thing no one outside the pack ever knew about is that despite his grumpiness, Isaac would do literally anything just to make his girls happy and safe, and they'd do anything just to make their alpha happy...even if that thing was a sleepover with pizza, music and makeover in it. "Isaac play something!!" Vic shouted at him to play any good music then she went back to gossip about someone to luna and daisy, "oh my god she didn't!!", radwa gasped when she heard what they said about someone and that caught isaac's attention, "who ya talking about ladies?" he turned wondering, "that girl in school that caught her boyfriend cheating on her so she exposed him AT. THE. PROM. in front of the whole school.." "ohmy what wow!!!!" he gasped too and the pack fell laughing.. "Isaac come do my makeup!", Radwa said as she prepared her makeup stuff, "your wish is my command, little wolf!" he smiled.. Whoever saw them arguing angrily like kids few hours ago would never believe they're the same people in pajamas and funny makeup full faces singing along with the top of their voices to songs on shuffle and laughing and dancing like silly children. "good job scarf boy!", Radwa said as she stared at her make up full face that's not-so-perfectly done by Isaac, "now YOUR TURN!", she yelled with a smirk and the girls cheered for him to let her do his makeup. "Oh god please no!", he muttred with pure horror filling his sapphire blue eyes, "c'mon isaac let her make you pretty", luna begged, "excuse you but i'm always pretty", he sassed back with a smirk only to be interrupted by daisy and radwa dragging him to the seat to start his makeover, "c'mon pretty boy!", "YOU TWO ARE SO TINY HOW CAN YOU EVEN MANAGE TO DO THIS UGH!!", "supernaturals, pretty boy!" radwa whispered and winked at him... "You can't do my makeup I AM AN ALPHA FOR GOD'S SAKE!!" "Shhhh pretty boy..", she cleared her throat and looked away dramatically, "Isaac, my dear, once a wise man said: "Makeup is fucking great for a guy, cause he makes a guy look beautiful, and a lot of times a guy is not beautiful. And I wanna change that. I wanna make sure that everybody thinks that guys are beautiful." , End of speech, pretty boy!" "Did you just quote pete wentz? are you seriously quoting pete wentz?!!" "shut up pretty boy and let me do your eyeliner." and this time, he actually shut up. After blending foundation and contour (does he even need it with his perfectly defined face???) and finishing his eye makeup with golden eye-shadow and winged eyeliner and even fake eyelashes. And with rose colored lipstick that was no different than his actual lip color.. "Only highlight left to make you shine like a star!!" "No offense but that wasn't what i meant when I said i wanted an emo makeup like ryan ross' " "I can't do your emo makeup while y'all are playing beyonce!!" She let him finish the final touches of highlighter by himself as the rest of the pack were singing loudly to the beyonce song on shuffle and laughing at him. As he finished and stood up to show them his now perfectly done face Don't Threaten Me With A Good Time by Panic! At The Disco came on shuffle and as everyone including Isaac screamed along to the lyrics "CHAMPAGNE, COCAINE, GASOLINE", Victoria shouted excitedly "ISAAC MAKE THESE HIGH HEELS WORK!!!" "you must be drunk or kidding me" he muttered in shock, "both, but seriously let's make these high heels work!", Victoria said as she held a pair of fancy heels and pushed Isaac to the bed so she can force him to wear it. "I lost a bet to a guy in a chiffon skirt.." the song said and isaac stood up in his fancy heels and sweat pants with a proud smirk on his face "BUT I MADE THESE HIGH HEELS WORK" and tried to do a cat walk before falling right on his face. "At least you made these high heels work, pretty boy!" THE END.

On Lorde, Green Light and how I refound my love for pop music
I’m in love with Lorde’s new single. I’m in love with Lorde herself, really. To me, she’s an immensely strong wave of fresh air bursting through the pop genre. A genre that, if we’re honest, we all adore, but are too afraid to admit. We call Britney’s Toxic a guilty pleasure, but really, do we actually feel guilty? No. We know it’s an anthem, it’s a legendary song and we all love it and we all know it.
But somewhere around age 13, when the hormones started kicking in and we wanted to impress the boys in 9th grade, we felt the pressure to be different. Different from other girls, because girls are superficial creatures obsessed with fake things like makeup and Lady GaGa. We weren’t allowed to like pop music, because it wasn’t real music. And so we all went through a post-punk or emo or grunge phase, because those bands had men in them, and men made real music about deep stuff - not to discredit that phase, the bands I listened to around age 14 shaped me in ways I will never forget.
And then we were shamed for that too - because we didn’t like that music for the music, we were just in love with the singer with the incredibly sharp jawline or the bassist with the huge arms. Personally, I felt like I wasn’t allowed to just be passionate about music, because my passion would never seem real to the scrawny, penis-bearing, acne-struck creatures that were always a little too loud in class.
Then I heard a song on the radio. It was definitely pop music, but it was different, the kind of different I’d been looking for since I found out my taste in things wasn’t good enough. Through Royals, I found out that pop music wasn’t a defined genre, it didn’t have to be “fake” or “superficial”, it was something able to engage with other genres and create something new. And it could be about real things - it didn’t have to be about trashing hotelrooms, diamond watches and jet planes. Rowan Blanchard put it into words perfectly last week: it was when I realized pop music could be poetry too. There’s always the Art Bros telling girls that pop music isn’t real, but Lorde’s music made us feel like this was for us. It was made for us to enjoy and not be shamed for.
This made me fall in love with pop music and female musicians all over again. I discovered a few things during this phase. First, pop music is art. Pop songs are incredibly well-constructed works of art that appeal to people because of their universal meaning. While the Art Bros in 9th grade thought this to be superficial, I think it’s brilliant. When someone writes something that manages to speak to people of all ages and cultures, they’ve made something very special. Second of all, genres are bullshit. I found out that every artists is influenced by dozens of different bands and artists, even by art that isn’t music. I found out that within pop, there were tons of artists who borrowed from the other genres and artists that I liked and they all had a tiny part of me in their music, it seemed. Because of Lorde, I discovered artists like Grimes, HAIM, Chet Faker, Troye Sivan, Sky Ferreira, MO, James Blake, Banks, London Grammar, Empress Of, Florence + The Machine, and many, many more. The third thing I realized was that female musicians were badass. I fell in love with them like the 13 year old me fell in love with Alex Turner’s skilled hands. I fell in love with Alana Haim, Florence Welch, Jenny Lee Lindberg, and Ellie Rowsell, because they brought a female perspective to their music, which I connected to on a way higher level than I ever did to lyrics by male artists.
Lastly, I refound my love for pop music. I found out that all the artists I loved when I was 11 had worked with producers and songwriters that my favorite indie hipster bands worked with as well, and vice versa. I learned about all the samples from 80s pop that were used in contemporary music and I learned that the instrumental to Rihanna’s Drunk On Love was actually The XX’s hipster-anthem Intro. Lorde’s music had reconnected me to pop music, and I wasn’t gonna call it my guilty pleasure anymore - Nelly Furtado’s Loose was just as much art as alt-J’s An Awesome Wave. I went into kind of a nostalgic phase (during this time, I also watched an extensive amount of Gossip Girl): I dug up songs that had memories attached to them, by Gwen Stefani, Britney Spears, Shakira, The Pussycat Dolls, Katy Perry, Flo-Rida, Timbaland, Beyoncé, Fergie, Kelly Clarkson, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Justin Timberlake, and all the other stuff I knew by heart when I was 8, 9, or 10. I now feel like it doesn’t matter whether a song is real or not, whether a team of professional songwriters, producers and someone who’s very skilled at autotuning were behind it or if it was written by a guy with a guitar in a basement. All that matters is that you connect to it, or that you can have fun while listening to it, that you can dance like crazy to it and make memories to the sound of that song.
I became obsessed with Lorde and listened to her EP on repeat in class and on the bus and at home and I saw myself in her, in her words and sounds. And that was so important to me, because until then, the pop songs I knew were about long lost love, about sex, big parties - great songs, but it was all about stuff that I didn’t relate to at all at age 14. Lorde’s music was about friends, fun, finding romance in the little things. Pure Heroine was the ultimate ode to my life, to being bored, to observing the world around you and to laughing until your ribs get tough. While 5 Seconds Of Summer was singing about how “she looks so perfect”, Lorde told me about her friends with “their skin in craters, like the moon”. It was so refreshing to hear a peer collecting the moments that were pivotal to my childhood and express them in a way I’d never heard before.
I’ve listened to Pure Heroine so much since then, mostly while travelling or doing nothing, and it still sounds as fresh and exciting as it did in 2013. Now that Green Light has come out, I feel like I’m growing up alongside her. I was 14, she was 17 when she released Pure Heroine. It was an album about teenagers and the life they lived, a life I was only just starting to get familiar with. Now I’m 17, and Ella is 21. I moved out of my parents’ house to the biggest city in my country, I’m going to college now, I’m drinking alcohol more often than once a year on NYE, and I’m growing up. Meanwhile, Ella has travelled around the world, became besties with Taylor Swift and was crowned “The Future of Music” by none other than the late David Bowie. It’s a different kind of growing up, but it’s growing nonetheless.
She wrote in a very impressive Facebook post that she “started to discover in a profound, scary, blood-aching way who I was when I was alone, what I did when I did things only for myself. I was reckless and graceless and terrifying and tender. I threw sprawling parties and sat in restaurants until the early hours, learning what it’s like to be an adult, even talking like one sometimes.” Again, I relate to her situation so much, even though we are in completely different situations. I, and I think many people of my age, spend much more time alone than we did in our teenage years. It’s scary and at the same time amazing to discover who you are when you’re like that. And I still feel like Lorde has this amazing connection to her generation, we all have the same feelings of fear and loneliness and euphoria sometimes, and she puts them into music.
So when I heard Green Light, again, it felt like it was about me, like it was written for me. Sure, it’s a song about heartbreak and lost love, but for me, it’s also about letting go who you were, about finding out your true self and not wanting to leave the other you behind just yet. Because it’s scary. She manages to make a song with a theme that’s been a pop cliché since forever feel relatable, accessible, comfortable, which is the biggest strength in her songwriting. Her mind has evolved when it comes to both sound and lyrics, but that essential part of her music has stayed. I can’t wait to hear more.
@lordemusic if you ever read this, thank you so much.
